Since its inception 50 years ago, the Bigen Group has transformed from a traditional engineering consultancy operating from one office in Polokwane to a truly African infrastructure development group of companies with eight regional offices in South Africa, headquarters in Mauritius and South Africa, as well as representation in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia.
In 1994, the Bigen Group derived 100% of its fee income from consulting engineering services. Today, it has transformed into a multidisciplinary group wthat derives 60% of its earnings from advisory services and 40% of its earnings from investments and concessions.
The Bigen Group operates within the agricultural, water and sanitation, real estate, transportation, energy, health, and development advisory sectors, responding to the continent’s socio-economic development needs with a blend of financial, technical, environmental, development impact and advisory, and institutional services.
Earning a reputation as an innovative, solutions-focused engineering and infrastructure development partner, the Bigen Group contributes towards socio-economic development in Africa by creating sustainable infrastructure, as well as generating and sharing wealth for all its shareholders.
In all of its projects, unskilled and semi-skilled labour is locally sourced and local subcontractors are supported to do work. In addition, inclusivity, localisation, indigenisation and beneficiation are inextricably linked to the planning, design and execution of all Group projects.
Helping Africa achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 has become especially critical since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to a World Bank report, Covid-19 has forced up to 40 million people living in Africa into extreme poverty. From the many lessons learnt over the past 50 years, the Group understands that in this era of socio-economic transformation, public and private enterprises need to partner with experienced service providers who can offer synergistic benefits, joint value creation and practical solutions to support the achievement of SDGs by 2030.
The Group’s philosophy is embodied in its creed of ‘doing good while doing business’, which is consistently evident in the socio-economic impacts derived from every project the Group undertakes.
There are enormous opportunities for the Bigen Group to not only rebuild Africa in the aftermath of Covid-19 and the recent spate of violence and lootings that shocked the country, but also to assist Africa in reaching its 2030 SDGs. Armed with an excellent leadership corps, strong management team and the support from its employees, the Bigen Group aims to build upon its legacy of success and satisfied stakeholders across Africa.
