At AECOM, we know that a skilled workforce is key to organisational growth and stability, and skills development and mentoring are at the core of our vision for client-focused innovation and excellence.

Mentorship, according to our Chief Human Resources Officer, Shirley Adams, is about creating a culture of inclusivity and empowerment by bringing out the best in an individual. At AECOM, we exemplify mentoring in everything we do by offering our employees access to a plethora of training, mentoring and career development opportunities, all of which contribute to the sustainability of engaged and suitably qualified employees whose common goal is to deliver a better world.

A brief overview of our direct and indirect mentoring initiatives: AECOM’s Candidacy Support and Mentoring Programme – In partnership with Mentoring for Success since 2009, we have been delivering a one-of-a-kind, world-class structured mentoring programme to all candidate engineers by creating an innovative learning and mentoring environment that supports and accelerates our young engineers on their road to registration. Hi-Po Mid-Management Programme – In recognition of the limited mentoring opportunities available once a candidate becomes registered, AECOM launched the Hi-Po Mid-Management Programme to bridge the gap between junior and senior management. This programme aims to support our high-potential employees during their transition to leadership roles by pairing our diverse group of mentees with a mentor who will guide them to achieve their goals for growth. mCircles – The mCircles programme is designed to advance gender diversity at AECOM by creating mentoring groups with our female employees to manage their learning, shared challenges and goal setting through collaboration and shared insights with other women in the business. Reverse Mentoring – This initiative is a vehicle to bring different generations and employee levels closer by pairing junior and senior employees with each other. By creating professional relationships, AECOM’s Reverse Mentoring programme involves leaders being mentored by junior employees to gain different business perspectives. EVOLVE – EVOLVE is a three-month, leader-led development programme that aims to engage, grow and inspire mid-level, high-performing employees through development, networking and knowledge exchange opportunities, both face-to-face and virtually. As a result, participants have a greater understanding of AECOM’s strategic position, as well as gain insight into effective client relationships and develop Career Development Plans. Global Manager Development Programme – This programme has been created to support and equip our people managers with basic skills to successfully lead their teams and operate the business through our established processes. Vacation Work Programme & Secondments – AECOM gives back to our community by offering vacation programmes to meritorious and/or underprivileged students and seconding employees from smaller businesses for experiential training and access to all AECOM’s mentoring tools and resources.

We are passionate about the development of Africa, which is only possible through the development of our people.
