Glenbrook Valley Civic Club “Glenbrook Valley Is A Deed Restricted Neighborhood” December

2009

Holiday Judging Tuesday Evening, December 15 “Tis the season to demonstrate pride in Glenbrook Valley!” All residents are encouraged to decorate their homes for the holiday season. A sting of lights or a wreath on every house in Glenbrook Valley would transform our neighborhood into a “wonderland of good cheer.” Please make your contribution to the spirit of the season. The judges are volunteers. They graciously give their time, and gasoline, in selecting the winning residences. Their decision is final. The judges are looking for creativity and effort. A “theme” is always impressive. The award winning categories are “Most Beautiful,” “Most Original,” and “Honorable Mention.” There is a winner in each category in each of the 5 major sections. The Glenbrook Valley Civic Club honors those homes that have been continuous award winners by declaring them to be in the “Hall of Fame.” To become a member of this elite category requires five consecutive years of winning in any of the categories. The “Hall of Fame” sign is placed in the designee’s yard each year the yard continues to be decorated. The judges will be making their decisions on Tuesday evening, December 155h. Please have your lights turned on by 6 p.m. Membership in the Glenbrook Valley Civic Club is NOT a requirement to win an award this year. ★

are already at work. They seem to start earlier and earlier each year. The following are a few safety tips to help keep you safe: PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS 1. PARK AS CLOSE TO A DOOR OR LIGHTED AREA AS POSSIBLE. 2. Do NOT make multiple trips to your car with packages. If it takes more than one trip to your car to carry your packages have the store personnel help carry your bundles to your car or have them delivered to your home. 3. Be careful where you park. Try to shop during daylight hours but if you can’t again park close to a door or light area and have store security walk you to your car when you leave. (That’s one of the jobs they are paid for.) 4. If you notice something and it makes you feel uncomfortable, if you

proof of insurance. (Write down all of your credit card numbers and the 800 #’s on the backs of those cards in case they are lost or stolen and keep them in a safe place along with your driver’s license number, your social security number and the license plate number on your vehicles.) 2. Clean out your car. Packages, brief cases, cell phones and purses, left in your car, are open invitations to steal. DON’T forget to lock your car and if you have one set the alarm. 3. ATM machines – you find them everywhere. Before you use any cash machine for cash, gas or groceries, jiggle the area where you insert your card. If it moves or comes off call a manager and the police. 4. Parking lots - When pumping gas or walking in a parking lot and you are approached by someone with a hard luck story, I don’t care how plausible it sounds or how pitiful they look, do not let them get within arms reach of you. Some of the stories are legitimate but it’s not worth your life or your safety to find out which is which. SHOPPING WITH THE ELDERLY AND DISABLED 1. Dropping Off. If they are wheelchair bound or use a walker or other aide. Get that out of the car first, and then help remove the elderly or disabled and LAST get your or their purse from the vehicle. Again carry as little as you can. 2. Picking Up. When you are leaving – reverse the procedure. Secure purses and briefcases in the car first, then any packages, then the passenger, then the appliance and finally you. HOME DECORATIONS As we decorate our homes for the holidays, be aware that among those that admire your art and handiwork others maybe plotting to remove your hardwork from your property to theirs. IF this happens be sure to report the theft to the Houston Police Department either. You may file a report on line at www.houstontx.gov/police , or call the non-emergency HPD number, 713884-3131. You may also file the report at the Broadway Storefront on Broadway or call at 713-847-4155. Also, please Alert Glenbrook Valley Citizens on Patrol at 713-641-5373. Cost is not a factor when reporting a crime and the police want and need to know about any and all incidents in our area. Report all crime or suspicious activity to HPD, ignoring it won’t prevent additional crime from occurring. We, the Patrollers of Glenbrook Valley Citizens on Patrol, want to wish all of you a safe and happy holiday season and we will continue to do our part to make sure this happens with your continued help and support. We are always looking for more volunteers to drive the neighborhood. The next meeting date is January 18, 2010.
