HAHC Hearing on Glenbrook Valley's Historic Application by Ann Collum

Due to the Houston Archeological and Historic Commission hearing the afternoon of November 18th, we will not be having the regularly scheduled Civic Club meeting that evening. The HAHC hearing begins at 3 p.m. in the City Hall Annex Council Chamber. This hearing is part of the final step in Glenbrook Valley becoming a Historic District. It has taken months to reach this point. The majority of all property owners signed petitions that this is what is desired for our neighborhood. All members of the Historic Team are property owners in Glenbrook Valley. We take great pride in our neighborhood and our homes. Not one of us would work toward achieving anything that would be detrimental or limiting to our ability to maintain our property. In protecting our property we are also striving to protect yours. The Historic Team's efforts have been transparent. We attended a six week workshop presented by the City's Planning and Development on Historic Preservation before starting the process to become a historic neighborhood. Information has been published in the Glenbrook Valley Newsletter regarding the designation on a regular basis. In our door to door adventure meeting neighbors, dispensing information, and gaining signatures on petitions, we found very few residents that were against the designation. This has been a positive experience for our neighborhood. Cont’d p.2

Christmas Traditions Holiday Decorations “Tis the season to light up Glenbrook Valley!” All residents are encouraged to decorate their homes for the holiday season. For over 50 years Glenbrook Valley has had November, 2010

The judges are volunteers. They graciously give their time, and gasoline, in selecting the winning residences. Their decision is final. The judges are looking for creativity and effort. A theme is good. The award winning categories are “Most Beautiful,” “Most Original,” and “Honorable Mention.” The Glenbrook Valley Civic Club honors those homes that have been continuous award winners by declaring them to be in the “Hall of Fame.” To become a member of this elite category requires five consecutive years of winning in

any of the categories. The “Hall of Fame” sign is placed in the designee’s yard each year the yard continues to be decorated. The judges will be making their decisions on Tuesday evening, December 14. Please have your lights turned on as close to 5 p.m. as possible. Winning requires membership in the Glenbrook Valley Civic Club.

We want to thank everyone who participated in National Night Out. We hope everyone tried to meet at least one new neighbor during National Night Out. We were out patrolling and saw several block parties. Thanks to the neighbors that joined these parties in celebration of a safer Glenbrook Valley. We want to give a special "Thank You" for your time and effort in planning your party. A special thank you to Sgt. Baltazar, Officers Wiggins & Montoya for their visits. We also extend thanks to Judge Jo Ann Delgado and representatives from Congressman Al Green, Senator Mario Gallegos, and Councilman James Rodriguez's offices This year is going by so fast. The Holidays are almost here. As you go shopping either to buy groceries or gifts, please remember the following 5 rules: 1.) Do not go by yourself--there is safety in numbers. 2.) Park as close to the front entrance as possible and under a light if it is going to get dark before you return to your vehicle. Remember where you parked. Don't wander around with an armload of gifts. 3.) Carry only one Credit Page 3

Card, check book and cash that you can afford to lose. 4.) Plan only one trip to your vehicle after shopping. If you shop at more than one store, make arrangements to leave your packages at the store until you have done all of your shopping or have them delivered to your home. 5.) Be careful when driving home that you are not followed. Do not wear flashy jewelry and keep as many of your purchases as possible out of sight. Do not go out to eat with your purchases still in the car. Take them home first and then go out. Times are tough now but we want everyone to have a Happy Holiday and a safe one. Join us at our next Citizens On Patrol meeting on November 15th; 6:30 PM at Park Place Regional Library, 8145 Park Place Blvd. All residents are invited.

The safest communities are the ones where the people are involved! por Hazel Carney

Gracias especiales a Sgto.

Fine Facts It is standard procedure when an ordinance is passed by the City of Houston, to assign a fine schedule of from $50 to $500. Rarely, if ever, is the "big one" ($500) assessed. This even applies to what's affectionately referred to as the "Pooper Scooper" ordinance. When you walk your pet you are supposed to scoop the poop. If you don't, you're subject to a fine for noncompliance with the ordinance. Someone that's proven to be a habitual non-scooper could get the $500 fine!
