The home improvement publication listed 61 neighborhoods across the country that they believed, “have promising futures, strong communities and homes that truly deserve a long-term commitment.” Of the 61 neighborhoods, Glenbrook Valley was selected as an overall top 10 Editor’s pick, as well as several other categories, including best in the south, best for fixer uppers, gardeners, city living, easy commute and retirees.
We have a great thing in Glenbrook Valley, and now, more and more people are beginning to recognize it!
On the This Old House website, they describe Glenbrook Valley as follows: The word swanky comes to mind when you survey the daring roof lines and sweeping lawns of Glenbrook Valley, a neighborhood that would have tempted Mad Men’s Don Draper had he landed a Big Oil account. This planned community, which was rolled out after Houston’s Gulf Freeway began funneling downtowners to greener subdivisions, contains more than 1,200 houses built between 1953 and 1962. Noted landscape architects Hare and Hare, who lent their genius to many of the city’s public spaces, designed the development, which boasted big lots on which buyers custom-built their dream homes— no two are exactly alike. New Hike and Bike Trail A few years ago a volunteer organization began a hike and bike trail on the north bank of Sims Bayou. A person from another neighborhood complained because it was concrete and not black top plus it was 4 feet wide and not 3 feet. We never understood the rational of this because 3 out of 4 groups involved were for it. Bottom line, the non-profit abandoned the project. It was announced Friday, September 20, that 14 miles of hike and bike trail along Sims Bayou from I 45 to Croquette Street would be built linking 7 parks. It will be a joint project with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the City of Houston. The estimated cost of the project is $7 million, funded mainly by the Corp of Engineers. The City of Houston and Houston's Parks Board are responsible for paying for the planned recreation amenities and acquisition of 3 properties.
