DID YOU KNOW? RIGHT OF WAY Those miles and miles of street Right-of-Way (ROW) that you drive by are maintained by the Parks, Recreation, & Library Services Department? That’s right, those tree-lined and landscaped ROW areas are the responsibility of the Parks ROW Division…all 512 acres and 15,000 trees.

Activities Guide / Winter 2013

Eight staff trim trees at least twice a year, apply weed control measures, clear streets and sidewalks of wind-storm debris, trim palm trees and oversee a thousand areas where outside contracted maintenance occurs. Additionally,

the ROW Division receives nearly 1,000 calls a year from other departments, agencies and citizens requesting assistance with ROW issues. Being in the Parks, Recreation and Library Services Department allows this small work group access to trucks, loaders, trailers and the occasional man-power assistance to keep your roads and sidewalks usable and safe. PARK RANGERS Another small work group assisting you in our parks are Park Rangers. There are three full-time and eight part-time Park Rangers

who share the responsibilities of being in your parks 365 days a year. They provide assistance and information to park visitors, ensure that the reserved facilities are available and clean for users, enforce park rules, regulations and policies, monitor special events, take control of found property, open and close ballfields for citizens with reservations, check parks for safety and vandalism and generate work orders. Their job is often difficult so give them a big “Thanks for being in our parks” the next time you see a Park Ranger.

Ever Heard of Disc Golf?

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc or Frisbee ®. The sport was formalized in the 1970’s and shares with “ball golf” the object of completing each hole in the fewest number of strokes or, in the case of disc golf, fewest number of throws.

18-Hole Disc Golf Course | Open 6 a.m. to sunset. | Thunderbird Paseo Park Located at the 59th Avenue and Thunderbird Road entrance. The course begins on the west side of 59th Avenue. A map is available at Glendaleaz.com/ParksandRecreation/DiscGolf.cfm and onsite.

Object: • Have fun • Complete the course in the fewest throws.

Rules: • Be earth conscious. Don’t litter! • Disc golf is played like ball golf, using flying discs. One stroke is counted each time the disc is thrown and when a penalty is incurred. The winner is the golfer with the lowest score. • Tee throws must be completed within the designated tee areas Beginners should always use “short” tees, when provided. • After teeing off, the player whose disc is farthest from the hole always throws first. The player with the fewest strokes on the previous hole is the first to tee off. • Fairway throws must be made with the foot closest to the hole on the spot where the last throw came to rest. The other foot may be no closer to the hole than the foot on this line.

Game Play:

Tee Off: Each of the 18 holes has a tee area and each tee shot must be thrown from within this tee area.

Lie: The spot where the disc comes to rest. Throwing Order: Lowest score on the previous hole throws first from the tee. After that it is determined by distance from the basket, with the furthest first. Fairway Throws: Can be completed with a run-up but must be released before crossing the lie. One supporting point on release should be directly behind the lie. Putts:

Any throw within 10 meters (approximately 33 ft.) is considered a putt. Falling or stepping past the lie before the disc comes to rest is a falling putt and therefore is a re-putt. First offense is no penalty, subsequent offenses are a stroke per offense.

Completion of Hole: A hole is complete when the disc is in the basket or supported by the chains. Discs on top of the basket do not count. Out of Bounds:

A throw that lands out of bounds must be played from where it last was in bounds and a one-stroke penalty is incurred. Each tee sign covers out of bounds for that hole.

Courtesy: Do not throw if other players or park users are in range, wait or courteously request for help in finishing your round.

• A run-up and normal follow-through afer release are allowed more than 10 meters from the hole. Inside 10 meters, a player may not step past his/her line. “Falling” or “jumping” putts are not allowed inside 10 meters. • A disc that comes to rest inside the Disc Pole Hole basket or chains constitutes successful completion of that hole. A disc that comes to rest on top of the pole does NOT constitute a successful putt.

• A throw that lands out of bounds must be played from the point where the disc went out of bounds. One stroke penalty. Water, roads, pavilions and walkways are normal disc golf out-of-bounds hazards. • Never throw until the players ahead of you are out of range and until the fairway is completely clear of spectators and park guests.

24

Activities Guide / Winter 2013

• A disc that comes to rest more than two meters above the ground is considered unplayable. The disc must be thrown from the ground directly below the disc. One stroke penalty.

(select parks) 623-930-2820

The City of Glendale Parks, Recreation and Library Services Department’s Adopt-A-Park program offered residents an opportunity to give back to the community by volunteering to help maintain a park or certain aspects of it. The department has created an improved version of the program entitled, Partners n’ Parks. This program will continue to focus on community-based volunteer opportunities, but will also broaden the application of the program by soliciting in-kind contributions, private donors and corporate sponsorships. This new direction will allow corporations to contribute sponsor dollars to specific parks and/ or park amenities. The in-kind contributions will encourage specific professional trades to contribute their expertise to the improvement of a park or facility. Examples of this may include landscape, electrical, carpentry, and/or masonry. Private donors may contribute financial resources and be recognized similar to other contributors. The end result is a cleaner, safer park while recognizing the provider through park signage, magazine advertisements or recognition on the department’s web site. For more information regarding the program or if you are interested in contributing, please contact Michelle Yates at 623-930-2044 or myates@glendaleaz.com or Paul King at 623-930-4203 or pking@glendaleaz.com.
