From the Chairman Members Here we are at the end of another calendar year. We approach it with enormous gratitude but also with some trepidation. Gratitude for the fact that the Club is in remarkably good shape. The finances are on a sure footing and usage is very healthy. As Chairman I am grateful to every member of staff, to the management and of course to each of you as Members for that fact. I am also very grateful for all the time put in by our many committees at all levels: a very worthy band of volunteers with nothing but the Club’s interests at their hearts. Trepidation because the blight of Covid still hangs over us globally. I do not want to rehash here everything we read about or watch on the news on a daily basis, other than to say that as a Club we will comply with our legal obligations to ensure that the Club is able to continue to offer the Membership what it wants. Given the fact that Covid still looms over us I would just ask you all to be respectful and vigilant towards it. So, in the Club context, please continue to comply with the protocols and the reality is, regardless of where you might stand on this highly emotive and divisive subject, that we are moving towards an era of vaccination certificates. You may have read the announcement I made recently about the fact that we will not be renewing Christian Vater’s contract, which ends on 15th March 2022. We are extraordinarily grateful to Christian for the way that he has managed and led the Club through the most trying period in its 108 year history. He has done that with great aplomb, panache and very evident passion and enthusiasm. However, we have decided that we need to look for a person who is a specialist in hospitality to take the Club forward. Christian will continue to be the Club Secretary until 15th March 2022. Please continue to support him and his team. So, in closing, I ask you to look back on this past year and reflect on the enjoyment you may have derived from the Club – it might be a memorable function you attended, a wonderful lunch you enjoyed in the finest company, or even a particular dish you enjoyed on a particular day. It might be a serve delivered on the tennis courts that demolished your opponent or a joke delivered in the bar that left the assembled throng in stitches, or a friendship or relationship that burgeoned because of the exquisite environment you found yourselves in or, at the other end of the spectrum, a sombre gathering to remember departed friends. All of these experiences come together to create the wonderful Club that is so dear to all of us. Warmest compliments of the Season. Please enjoy yourselves, the Club has laid in its usual festive fayre for us all to enjoy, but also stay safe, particularly for those travelling on the roads that become so treacherous at this time of year. My best wishes to you and your families.

From the Secretary Dear Members, Firstly, I hope you and your loved ones are all safe and sound. Although we are confronted with the fact that yet another COVID variant dubbed Omicron (it is named after the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet which makes me wonder if epidemiologist envisage us having a total of 24 viruses before this all ends) it is this time of the year where we come together with our most beloved to celebrate and experience the gift of life in the spirit of Christmas. Many of us, including myself, start running around in these last few day leading up to Christmas Day in order to find presents and gifts for our loved ones yet, as the old saying goes, “the best Christmas gift is to realise how much you already have.” In this very spirit, we as employees of the Club, have much to be thankful for as we have the best Members in the world and on behalf of our entire team, I would like to thank all of you for your continued support throughout another COVID year. Due to the pandemic, we sadly had to cancel various ‘signature Club Events’ that have become part of the fabric of our Club such as the Christmas Carols in the Ballroom and the Children’s Christmas Party with Father Christmas flying in from Lapland and landing with his helicopter at the Club, bearing gifts for our youngest and, of course, always super well-behaved Members. Yet, the good news is that we continue to have a lot of Muthaiga Christmas Classics this year and I truly hope to see you at some of our events, be it our Christmas Eve Dinner, our traditional and unparalleled Christmas Day Lunch, at the PINKS Boxing Day BBQ or for the New Year’s Eve party including the fireworks! And with regards to New Year’s Eve, a loving reminder to all our lady Members that this might be the perfect moment for you to finally check out the Members’ Bar, this - shrouded in legend - place at the Club, where CEOs, fathers and husbands regularly disappear and spend hours amongst

themselves, unbeknownst to their mothers, spouses, daughters or mistresses, as women only have access once a year. Many believe that having a ‘Men’s Bar’ is totally outdated in the 21st century yet until our Members decide to change that, why not stop by and have a look for yourselves, as Karen Blixen did a hundred years ago? New Year’s Day Brunch might give you another option to enjoy the Club and to set the tone for a 2022 that will hopefully be better, brighter, healthier and happier than 2021 had been. I, for one, am convinced that 2022 will be a positive year as the Club is financially in the best shape ever, well structured and the whole team is highly motivated and determined to offer you the best service and experience, with the highest level of safety across all areas of the Club. ‘Nakupa Hati Nzuri’ has been the Club’s motto since inception in 1913 and it is our daily aim to ‘bring you good service’ at each and every touchpoint and whenever and wherever you interact with the Club. Enjoy the read and please do not hesitate to reach out to me on secretary@mcc.co.ke or call with regard to any ideas, comments or recommendations on how we can improve your experience at MCC. My best wishes to you and your families and loved ones and may you all have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2022! Yours always,

Christian Vater, Club Secretary Muthaiga Country Club

due the Delta variant. As much as we at Balloting enjoy all our candidate interviews, whether physical or virtual, there is no substitute for the in person interactions, so there was a certain feeling of euphoria when we held our first physical meeting on the 15th of December in over seven months! Dear Members, How the year has flown and ended positively in terms of Members applying, being interviewed and joining the Club, despite the challenges of the pandemic. Just to recap the year. We recommenced our physical candidate meetings in January and unfortunately chose to return to virtual interviews in March

We have a large number of Family Members moving into the 18-29 year category who we will continue to meet in person and virtually in December and into 2022. For those in the 18-29 category, please do remember to apply for Full Membership, before turning 30. There are a healthy number of applicants in the pipeline and thanks to all Members who have kept a keen

eye over the year on both the Club notice board and Club emails on those applying, and alerting the Secretary to any that may require a deeper discrete review. I would like to thank the Balloting Committee for their tireless efforts over the year and to the Main Committee for all the support and guidance. Wishing you and your families a Very Happy and Healthy 2022.

finance

Dear Members First and foremost, I would like to thank you for attending the virtual AGM in record numbers and supporting the various resolutions, that were all passed with large majorities, and secondly, for your continued support in using the Club and paying your subscriptions on time. I am happy to report that the Club’s recovery from the effects of the pandemic has progressed steadily. 4

Following the easing of Covid protocols, Club usage has improved significantly in our new financial year, particularly in the areas of accommodation and Private Events. Consequently, year to date usage revenue has now reached over 85 per cent of pre-covid levels. Costs have been managed very well and the Club’s cash position is stable. Our focus this financial year is to deliver greater value to Members in terms of pricing, quality and service. In this regard, you may have noticed that we have reduced food and beverage prices by up to 12 per cent, and in the recent AGM, the Committee did not seek an increase in Membership fees. Our prudent estimates suggest our Club should be generating annual

Muthaiga Country Club December 2021 - February 2022

surpluses of at least Ksh 50 million. This would permit entrance fees from new Members to be ring fenced from operations and be used exclusively for investment in capital projects and new services, to enhance Members’ experience. The majority of our Members still do not use the Club on a regular basis, and we therefore continue appealing to all Members, now more than ever, to please come and enjoy your Club. In the meantime, I thank you again for your support of the Club and best wishes for the holiday season.

CULINARY CAPERS An extract from the late Patrick Walker’s journal describes an exchange between him and the Club Chef back in the 1960s…. “It all started when Robin Long, Peter Fisher and I enjoyed a good lunch at the Oriental Club before interviewing an English applicant for the post of Chef – not for the first or last time, food quality at MCC had deteriorated. Backgammon was then all the rage at Muthaiga, and we were perhaps influenced by an indication that the candidate’s most personable wife was a player of some renown in London. This did not make up for continuing deficiencies on the culinary front and the Messing Committee was on the cusp of making a further change, when there was an incident at dinner that started with a truly inedible Escalope de Veau. The chef was summoned and it was explained to him, politely I believe, that such an offering would have been more suitably employed as the sole of one of Messrs Bata’s better-known products. This was met with the suggestion, offered in anything but a conciliatory tone, that I should, well, go forth and multiply. Perhaps it was the glint in my eye, but there was a rapid retreat towards the kitchen and it is with a sense of shame that I admit to setting off in equally rapid pursuit. When asked where I had hit him, my answer - that it was somewhere between the pot wash and the still room - was apparently regarded as facetious. In truth there had been little more than an unseemly wrestle before I found myself helpless in the soft but powerful arms of Benjamin the pastry cook, he who was so fond of his own product that he must have weighed upwards of three hundred pounds. Thus it was that the Chef, who had been on the take, was able to improve his exit terms, while I endured some five years in the wilderness and acquired an undeserved reputation for violence.” Patrick Walker

As representatives of the Luxembourg team (pictured right) Chefs Macharia and Ombete were the first Kenyans ever to take part in the International Catering Competition and they managed, not only to secure a Bronze medal at the regional competitions, but also to qualify Kenya for the Culinary World Cup in 2022 where they will compete with the world’s very best chefs. Written here (left) is one of many MCC vignettes from Patrick’s memoirs, recorded faithfully in his inimitable style, but things have changed since those days and Patrick was the first to acknowledge the culinary improvements, both in variety and quality that the MCC catering teams achieve today. Between informal instruction working alongside our Visiting Chefs, and following a formal Training & Development Programme, the culinary repertoire created by the MCC chefs has reached international levels. As part of the Training & Development Programme, Executive Chef Joseph Macharia and Pastry Chef Vincent Ombete recently went to Lyon, the gastronomic centre of France, to participate in the prestigious International Catering Competition, alongside numerous Michelin Star chefs. Upon his return to Kenya, Chef Macharia was keen to try out his newly learned recipes and ten lucky Members were able to sample a “Taste of Lyon” which was the theme for the Tasting Menu for November, in the main MCC kitchen.

COMPETITION Question: Who is this woman and what was she doing in Kenya? Prize: The first correct entry that we receive will win dinner for two with a bottle of House Wine

Answer to our Sept – Nov 2021 Competition QUESTION: Who is this young man and what year was he in Kenya? ANSWER: Kermit Roosevelt 1909, official photographer for the Smithsonian expedition to East Africa. WINNER: There were no correct answers.

www.mcc.co.ke

DID YOU KNOW? Following the end of his service as President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt led an Expedition to East Africa with his son, Kermit. The Smithsonian Museum funded the Expedition, in return for approximately 1,000 skins of large mammals, 4,000 of small mammals, and other specimens totaling approximately 11,400 items, which the expedition collected. About 10,000 plant specimens were also obtained, as well as a small collection of ethnological objects. The party left New York on 23 March 1909 and sailed for British East Africa. Following a route that took them to Nairobi, Mount Kenya, the Loita Plains, Lake Victoria, Lake Albert and up the Nile to Khartoum, the expedition ended there in March 1910. The official photographer for the expedition was Kermit Roosevelt.

‘ON TRIAL’

‘On Trial’, the interactive production performed by the sensational Kenya Youth Theatre at MCC was a tremendous success. The one-act drama, played out in a courtroom, where Athena, one of the matriarch elephants in Tsavo National Park, is on trial for murder, having killed a young boy in his mother’s shamba at the edge of the village. As witnesses were called forward to testify an intricate story unfolded, illustrating the complex and often tragic conflict between communities and wildlife, all too common in areas adjoining National Parks in Africa. On Trial Cast

The Jury of ‘On Trial’ in session discussing the case and the complex reality of human-wildlife conflict in Kenya, with MCC Chairman and appointed Head Juror Philip Coulson.

The task of the audience was to decide whether Athena, was guilty of murder or manslaughter, or was she innocent? Appointed Head Juror MCC Chairman and partner in Coulson Harney LLP Philip Coulson selected a sub jury made up of the numerous children in the audience. The Chairman did a marvelous job and generated a lively discussion with his young adjudicators, who were well aware of the importance of the task entrusted to them.

COLONIALISM

- A MUSICAL ORAL HISTORY PERFORMANCE Sven Kacirek & Wangari Grace, storyteller and children’s author will be performing the history of colonialism through the original medium of music and storytelling.

Originally aimed at children, this musical oral history performance has been well received in Germany and Kenya by children and adults alike.

From the stance that colonialism is a global occurrence usually told through textbooks and explained by outsiders, Sven and Wangari endeavour to tell the story of colonialism through ordinary people’s own stories and experiences and set them to music.

Don’t miss this unusual, enlightening performance, which Sven and Wangari will perform live at MCC, on 3 February 2022. Sven Kacirek & Wangari Grace.

‘Lifting the Day – A Lockdown Exhibition’. MCC Member and one of Africa’s leading artists, Mary Collis launched her latest work of art – ‘Lifting the Day – A Lockdown Exhibition’. This charming, vivid, little gem of a book is the result of Mary’s work during lockdown, consisting of 496 pages with a painting for every day. Beautifully reproduced, ‘Lifting the Day’ is wonderful to dip into, to see what glorious painting opens up on the page and what pithy comment, nugget of wisdom or artistic insight accompanies it. A fabulous little stocking filler - even for the artistically untrained eye. ‘Lifting the Day – A Lockdown Exhibition’ by Mary Collis, is on sale at Bookstop Yaya, Text Book Centre Sarit, Westlands Sundries and Amazon.

Rock Art Exhibition

David Coulson, Chairman of TARA (The African Rock Art Association) gave a fascinating talk on Africa’s extraordinary Rock Art dating back through centuries, revealing a rich and intriguing insight into early African life. A remarkable exhibition of African rock art is on display in the Muthaiga Room for the month of January.

Ballet originated during the Italian Renaissance in the 15th Century and is now taking a form of its own in Africa. MCC held its annual Remembrance Service at the War Memorial in keeping with the armistice signed in Europe on 11 November 1918.

The East African weekend of Remembrance celebrating the end of WWI in Africa was held over 26th – 28th November, two weeks later than Europe, in keeping with history. The services in Tsavo were organised to remember the ‘unremembered’, uncounted troops from the Carrier Corps and the askaris in the Kings African Rifles, who lost their lives in the Great War. Services were held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Taveta Military Cemetery, Voi Cemetery and Maktau Indian Cemetery. The services were attended by Brigadier Balumba, Major Ambuka and the Quarter Guard from 15 Kenya Rifles based in Mariakani, Brigadier Ronnie Westerman the British Defence Attache and Janet Sudi-Maina of the British High Commission, as well as numerous MCC Members including organisers Tom Lawrence and James Willson, author of the ‘Guerrillas of Tsavo’.

Poppy Bowls Championship

CENTENARY POPPY BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP

To celebrate the centenary of the founding of the British Legion, the MCC Bowls Section held a Centenary Poppy Bowls Championship to raise money for the Poppy Appeal.

Hootenanny Members (from left) Dave Beglin, John Dawson, Mike Craig and Ronnie Andrews entertained us all afternoon with live music and demonstrated that the bowling green is a lovely setting for an afternoon of great entertainment.

From left - Main sponsor David Seagon with winning team – Peter Scholes, Peder Mortensen and Ian Sharp (with a shot difference of 10.) With a tremendous turn out of support, 41 bowlers took to the green, and a lively and competitive morning of Bowls was followed by a very enjoyable social event, which included a delicious lunch prepared by the Club and a fundraising Lucky Dip. Among the bowlers were representatives from the British High Commission, the Embassies of Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and the Republic of Serbia. We were also delighted to have the Bowls Captains of Karen Club (Barbara Charleson) and Limuru Club (Peter Scholes.) The green was playing like a dream thanks to our Green Keeper, Oliver Fowler, ably assisted by Newton and Hebron, and so encouraging to see all seven rinks being used. The whole day was a tremendous success and over KSh 300,000/- were raised for the Poppy Appeal. Thank you to all who took part and to our generous sponsors, JW Seagon, Dion Wines and Diageo/Guinness. Christina Andersen, newcomer to the Bowls Section and winner of the Spider in the Handicap Singles.

The Club Handicap Singles was kindly sponsored by Oliver and Sheryl Fowler. In one marathon game, Kieran Day beat Halina Pellini 21-20 after 26 ends while in another game Peter Scholes scraped home against Clare Jethwa 21-19. In another marathon game on the first day, Maureen Burns edged out Ollie Fowler 21-19. In the semi-finals, Peter Scholes beat Alan Collis 21-9 while Maureen Burns beat Kieran Day 21-12.

The Final was contested by Maureen and Peter in blistering heat and Peter went into an early lead which left Maureen chasing the game. Although she did manage to come within two shots around the 11th end, Peter eventually ran out the winner 21-10 to retain the John Fowler Memorial Trophy.

Squash

Squash Report The squash section continues to stay busy in the last quarter and we have had good turnouts from new players at our monthly social mix-ins. I encourage more players to come and join us on the first Wednesday of every month.

MCC Sports Manager Abdul Aura presents Champion Kunal Bid with the Easter Tournament Cup.

To avoid missing the Easter Tournament twice in two years to COVID, we held the event in September, which produced a great turnout of 12 players. This tournament was played over three days, in four groups, with the winners advancing to the Cup Final, and the runners-up competing for the Plate. Both matches were extremely competitive and went the full five games. Rajeev Gandhi on his debut won 3-2 in the Plate Final against Frank Meifel, and Kunal Bid won 3-2 against Keriri Muya, claiming the Cup. Thanks to Sachi Mohindra for her kind donation of BioFreeze products to the finalists, and to MCC Secretary Christian Vater, for the Gym Membership prizes for the winners.

Muthaiga Country Club vs Karen Country Club In our first competitive team match against another Club in nearly four years, we hosted Karen for what we hope will become an annual event. Our previous matches against Karen have ended poorly for MCC and our team fought hard to change the record, which they did with an impressive 6-2 victory. Squash Captain Kunal Bid presents the Easter Tournament Plate to Rajeev Gandhi. 12

tennis Owing to the large number of players our annual MCC ‘U.S. Open’ Mixed Doubles was played in two graded groups making it a ‘Team Event’ with teams of two pairs representing various U.S. cities. After an extremely competitive session, ‘Team Dallas’ emerged as the eventual winners - 1st pair Hans and Leesa Shrader and 2nd pair Adil El Youssefi and Naomi Ndolo. Congratulations to ‘Team Dallas’. Runners-up was a tie between Team Chicago and Team Miami pictured right Chicago Team 1st pair Bitange Ndemo & Tessa MacLellan 2nd pair Alec Davis & Anu Bhardwaj Miami Team 1st pair Rupert MacLellan & Alex Lemhberg 2nd pair Claudio & Teresinha Acioly

Participants in the annual ‘Cup of Nations’ Challenge

For our next event, “Les Grands Poissons” Mixed Doubles Competition, strictly for players of 55 and over, only eight players turned up. Playing on a round-robin basis in just one Pool with pairs representing various big fish, Team MARLIN were the outright winners (Johnny Ponsonby & Tessa MacLellan). Well played those two big fish! Our popular annual ‘Cup of Nations’ Competition attracted sixteen players who represented the EU, Kenya, UK and the USA. Teams of two pairs competed on a round-robin basis within two graded groups. Match play was fierce throughout the morning and eventually, combining both sets of points, Team UK (1st Pair – Chris Shaw & Pamela Bitange and 2nd Pair – Rupert MacLellan & Anu Bhardwaj) emerged as the overall winning team. Well done, Brexit!

Then our Ladies and Men, had the chance to play some singles, however, only three ladies and three men registered to participate, leaving me with no option to introduce, for the first time, ‘Mixed Singles’ for the six players. A most enjoyable time was had and the ladies, certainly performed with great distinction. In the end the challenge was won by Alfred Reboul (a wild card from Paris!) with 22 points, and the runner-up was Katarina Karanja with 20 points. I would like to thank all members of our tennis community for their enthusiasm and commitment in making our Section one of the most active of all the facilities at the Club. The monthly average number of chits signed by players stands at 807. Keep it up everybody! John Goodwin Tennis Captain Team UK – Winners of the MCC ‘Cup of Nations’ Challenge. Five MCC Members and eleven other fellow blades set themselves a formidable challenge to raise money for Running for Rangers. John Rogers recounts their adventure.

John Rogers fixing the car watched by curious Samburu.

Running for

In June this year, eight foolhardy teams, which included MCC Members John Rogers, Colm D’olier, Ross Field, Casimir Gross and Kendall Evans, set off on a 5-day ‘rally’ through the deserts of North Kenya. The rules were simple, no Toyotas or 4WDs, the cost of the car could not exceed $1,000 and with only $500 more allowed for repairs and spares, this was not going to be easy! The choice of car selection varied a great deal with Peugeots quickly becoming the obvious favourite, totalling four in number, followed by two Datsuns, one Mitsubishi Lancer and a Nissan Sunny. There were two no 4WD support vehicles carrying mechanics, a doctor with medical kit and extra fuel and water. Every car had to carry 60 litres of fuel and 40 litres of water and affix tow points to the front and rear. Each car was responsible for carrying its own food, drink, bedding (camp beds and mosquito nets), clothing and spare parts. Ironically the smallest car in the fleet, a Peugeot 205, accommodated the two largest men in the team - two ex- Kenyan rugby players - who became adept at driving with their knees around their ears and their camping equipment digging into their backs.

There had been much pre-departure debate as to whether front or rear wheel drive would be best in the sand. It wouldn’t be long before we found out. Each day started with a driver’s briefing. Aside from the constant threat of looming breakdowns or total End of day recap under a thorn tree vehicle disintegration, the route passed through some inhospitable areas, known for violent tribal conflict. Safety and communication at all times was key - all vehicles were carrying either satellite phones or GPS trackers, to ensure constant communication and, in the more dangerous areas, the vehicles travelled in tight convoy. There was a simple points system to determine placement each day – completing the course within the set time allowances for each attracted 50 points, however punctures, general repairs and getting stuck resulted in hefty deductions! Assisting those stuck/broken down, either with manpower or with parts, John Rogers & Colm D’Olier ready gained the teams credit points; this was for Black Tie End-of-Rally-Dinner. 14

Rangers Desert Dash

a sure way to ensure constant and willing support. Each day would end around a campfire with a few beers and wild debate over who helped whom the most. Most days took an average of seven hours of rough, hard, bumpy, dust choking driving, typically setting off at 8am and limping into camp at 4pm where much needed “bush repairs” were undertaken. It was important to get all cars to the day’s finish before dark - which comes suddenly in the African bush. The terrain ranged from miles upon miles of arid scrubland, to rocky desert around the shores of Lake Turkana, the world’s largest permanent desert lake. This provided a great spot to take a much-needed bath, whilst keeping an eye out for the monster Nile Crocodiles that inhabit the lake. The more ambitious had carried fishing rods to do some fishing along the way, however the only casting they did was their shadows over the engine trying to work out what engine part might be playing up this time! Aside from the dramatic scenery, enjoyed from the comfort of no air conditioning, North Kenya also delivered a spectacle of wildlife along the way including elephant, cheetah, giraffe, gerenuk and many more. From Lake Turkana the route headed east into the Chalbi Desert, composed of alkaline sediment and stabilised sand dunes, the relics of the former Lake Chalbi. Luck was on side, as the desert floor was dry enough to hold the weight of the vehicles, which saved them traversing a longer and rockier route. The campsite in the Chalbi was 2kms into the dunes this took their toll on the manpower and vehicle clutches as car after car bogged down in the loose sand. It quickly became clear that the rear-wheel cars were better suited to the sand, leaving the front-wheelers digging their way out with shovels and sand ladders under the unforgiving desert sun. The last and final day of this crazy adventure was concluded in very extravagant fashion, black tie no less. After a quick dip and wash in the local river, the competitors dressed in their finest and sat down to their first prepared meal in days - BBQ goat, cabbage and warm beer. A fitting end to an adventure of a lifetime. Of the eight cars that started – seven managed to complete the 1,250 kilometre long trip. There was only one puncture between all eight vehicles over five days - nothing short of a miracle!

Her itage Collection

LAUNCH OF THE MCC HERITAGE COLLECTION The launch of the Heritage Collection was an historic evening at the Club with a marvelous display of Club memorabilia, some belonging to MCC and some kindly donated for the occasion by Members. Members Tinu Mhajan and Peter Mathenge gave fascinating talks about their own family histories and experiences of life in Kenya, and Steve Mills outlined plans for the Heritage Collection Project.

Members of the Muthaiga Heritage Committee from left – Tinu Mhajan, Paul Chemn’goren, Philip Coulson, Tom Lawrence, Steve Mills, Peter Mathenge, Gail Paul, Rachel Mbai, Tove Hussein and Tony Wainaina.

Before 1895 when the British Government took on the responsibility of formally documenting Kenyan history, many peoples and cultures had already shaped and coloured Kenya’s vibrant past. First came the Bantus and Nilotes over two thousand years ago, there is evidence of Chinese visitors in Lamu in the 1300s, at the same time Arab and Indian sea merchants also came down the coast in search of trade. The Portuguese exerted their influence for 200 years from the early 1500s before being ousted by the Omanis, and by the 1850s Europe was also looking to expand their empires and the ‘Scramble for Africa’ began. Britain’s interest in East Africa was Uganda and the source of the Nile, but it was simpler to gain access from Mombasa than from Cairo, hence the origins of British East Africa. The name ‘Kenya’ only came into existence in the early 1920s when it formally became a British colony, taking its name from the mountain. 16

Britain’s direct influence ended in 1963, having been the resident power for just under 70 years. Kenya has been independent for an even shorter span of time - just less than 60 years - but more change has happened in this period than any other. All of this amounts to Kenya’s colourful past, and through the microcosm of Muthaiga Club’s hundred-year history, the Heritage Collection is an attempt to celebrate the past and make sure that it is safeguarded for generations to come, in the form of artefacts, archives and art. As one of the most historical Clubs in Africa, MCC’s Heritage Committee will be creating a series of displays of historical memorabilia in Reception and would be delighted if Members would share any interesting artifacts, books, artwork or memorabilia attached to the Club, that they might own, to help prevent a fascinating part of Kenya’s heritage from being lost.

Electric Driving – First Trip to Naivasha by Tom Morton “But where do you charge it?” is the first question I am usually asked when I say that we have a Leaf, the all-electric car from Nissan. The answer, “Through a normal plug, at home,” is often greeted with surprise, demonstrating one of the key misunderstandings of electric mobility. I decided in early October, to drive to Naivasha Yacht Club and back to Kitisuru, setting out with a certain amount of “range anxiety,” as this was the first long-distance outing. I wondered would the car really cope with all those uphill sections? Determined not to re-charge in Naivasha, I packed the cable in in my bag - just in case. Electric cars are very much part of daily life in the UK now, with sales of electric cars and hybrids (half petrol, half electric) outstripping diesel powered vehicles for the first time this year. There are government incentives

towards the upfront cost of purchase which is higher than an equivalent car with an internal combustion engine. In central London, further incentives are provided as older diesel cars are charged to enter the Ultra Low Emission Zone. On a street in Mayfair recently, I could not help but notice that four in five cars parked were fully electric.

“”

But where do you charge it?… Through a normal plug, at home Back on the trip to Naivasha, I was a bit worried on the initial stage going up to Limuru, as the range seemed to be dropping much faster than the kilometres I was actually covering. But once pointing down hill on the escarpment, it was a different story. You don’t really use the brake pedal very much, the car automatically slows when you take your foot off the accelerator and forward momentum is “regenerated” into the battery. Feeling emboldened, I set off from Mai Mahiu at 100kmph, where traffic allowed. I was determined that I would have no loss of utility compared to driving in a normal car. At the Yacht Club, 82km covered and battery was still on 80 per cent. On Sunday, I came back via “the top road” over the escarpment, which added more distance and altitude to climb. Electric cars can accelerate quickly and

All-electric Nissan Leaf charging at home. evenly, from any speed and there are no gears to change down. A 0-100kmph performance of under seven seconds made overtaking those Canter trucks a simple operation. A heavy right foot does munch through the battery, however. At home, 180km travelled and 54 per cent of the charge remaining. The second most common question is, “But isn’t electricity expensive?” Another myth - it only cost 750/- to “fill up” again, compared to 2,500/- for a petrol equivalent. There are clear cost savings for the driver. But as Kenya’s electricity is almost entirely generated from renewable sources there are almost no CO2 emissions from use, a key factor as we mitigate carbon emissions. In addition, Kenya does not have to spend foreign exchange on buying petrol and diesel from overseas. Most people who drive in Kenya probably park their car “off the street” and so could charge at home. All that is missing is a network of high-capacity chargers at strategic points on longer journeys. You might buy one more fossil fuel powered car, but the one after that will probably be electric …

edita’s ballet and opera programme

The MOPEI TRIPLETS LIVE in concert The celebrated Moipei triplets need little introduction. They started performing at the age of nine and have been musical sensations ever since, singing all types of music from opera to Jazz without disdaining the occasional pop song. After studying Music in the US their promising career was put on hold by the COVID-19 lock down, but since the recent reopening of theatres, they have reprised their dazzling success with an invitation to perform at the Lincoln Centre, together with a handful of well-established stars, in New York. The triplets will be home on a brief family visit for Christmas and to delight their fans in Kenya with their new exciting repertoire.

The Moipei Sisters will be performing live on Thursday 6 January 2022 in the Ballroom at 6.30pm.

Ballet Night - Romeo & Juliet I am thrilled to have come across, purely by chance, a marvelous version of Romeo & Juliet choreographed by John Neumeier. Ida Praetorius as Juliet and Andreas Kaas as Romeo are completely entrancing. They are not only stellar dances but also incredible actors. Ida plays the role of a fifteen-year-old by seeming not to know how to behave in every situation, and her youthful, slightly crazy love, for Romeo is clear throughout, and Andreas as Romeo, can scarcely hold back his longing for her. Perhaps it is not Neumeier’s choreography that makes this ballet so special, but the two interpreters. Andreas and Ida are a partnership made in heaven.

‘Romeo & Juliet’ will be screened on Thursday 27 January in the Ballroom at 6.30pm.

Opera Night - Rigoletto Verdi’s stage directions are so faithfully followed in this Rigoletto that the performance took place over two days and was filmed live on location in Mantua. Each Act unfolds at the correct time of day, in the places indicated in the libretto. This is the real Palazzo Ducale di Mantova, real Renaissance staircases and hallways and real frescoes painted by 15th century masters like Correggio and Mantegna. Placido Domingo, the most famous tenor in the world for over 50 years, is now in his 70s, taking on the baritone title role of Rigoletto. In spite of his years, his masterful performance is the most moving Rigoletto ever seen on any stage.

‘Rigoletto’ will be screened on Thursday 17 February in the Ballroom at 6.30pm.

Film - Impromptu Impromptu is based on the true story of the tempestuous love affair between brazen, controversial 19th century feminist George Sand and the shy, well-mannered composer Frederic Chopin. Sand is setting Paris ablaze by taking a man’s name, wearing men’s clothes and taking a long line of lovers. But when she hears the heavenly music of Chopin, she vows to stop at nothing to capture the heart of the fragile shy musician. Set in the 19th century Paris, Impromptu also brings to light, in a subplot, Franz Liszt’s scandalous love affair with a married Comtesse. The film’s soundtrack is made up of Chopin and Liszt’s glorious piano sonatas.

‘Impromptu’ will be screened on Thursday 17 March in the Ballroom at 6.30pm. 20

book reviews THE CROWN IN CRISIS by Alexander Larman

This is a much written about subject and one that some of us still remember. As a child I enjoyed listening in on adult conversation, and recollect that there was never anything said in favour of Mrs Simpson. Edward was an extremely popular Prince of Wales and seemed to have all the qualities to become a successful king. He had had a number of love affairs, mainly with divorced women, almost as though he were seeking a mother figure rather than a wife. Mrs Simpson, already married to her second husband, was no exception. Nor did she seek out the Prince with a view to marriage - she was much more interested in entertaining and having among her guests the ‘right kind of people’, of which he was one. However, Edward fell for her completely, and she suddenly found herself caught up in a web from which there was no escape. It came as a shock to Britain, and I can just remember listening to Edward’s abdication speech. ‘The Crown in Crisis’ is a readable and accurate account of what happened in unprecedented circumstances. One always wonders how happy Edward and Mrs Simpson actually were, and whether Edward ended up a disillusioned man, especially as his younger brother became such a popular monarch. Mrs Simpson was never granted the title ‘HRH” nor were either of them ever made welcome in Britain. This is an interesting book for anyone interested in Britain’s Royal family.

THE MARA FIASCO by Ian McKenzie-Vincent

This is a very relevant story for all those living in Kenya, and for people intending to visit. and its message a vital one. Classified as one of the World’s Wonders for its spectacular beauty and prolific game, it is hardly surprising that the Masai Mara is especially popular with poachers. The Mara Fiasco is about three Kenyans, hell-bent on making easy money fast, plan to shoot a rhinoceros. They have guns, but very little experience in using them, and even less geographical knowledge of the Masai terrain. A rich and unscrupulous Chinese man, ‘needs’ a pair of elephant tusks fast for export. Money for hard drugs is also involved. Fortunately there are ‘goodies’ as well as ‘baddies’ in the story. While, the Chinese smuggler plans his Mara trip – in and out - with his tusks to put on a flight to China that same night, Popsy Kangela meets David Macharia - both are tour guides and devoted conservationists, who connect unexpectedly in a car crash when Popsy is driving to pick up safari clients. The tension builds up rapidly and keeps readers page turning. This book holds a message that everyone who cares about Kenya should read and remember - our wildlife matters and is precious. Vincent writes competently, but his message is blunt for people who have not yet realised the importance of game conservation. www.mcc.co.ke

YARO AND THE RHINO by Rachel Shaw Young MCC Member Rachel Shaw has recently published her first book, ‘Yaro and the Rhino.’ The book, is aimed at children aged 7-11, and tells the story of a young Samburu who makes friends with a rhino and of the adventures they experience together. It is set in Samburuland, and Rachel hopes to raise awareness of the wildlife there and its need for protection. She plans to donate copies of the book to local schools in Samburuland to help promote awareness. Inspiration for ‘Yaro and the Rhino’ came to Rachel on her last safari in Samburuland with her father Chris Shaw and grandmother Diana Shaw. Every evening at their Lodge, they were treated to a talk from a local Samburu warrior on conservation and animal behaviour, which Rachel found fascinating and made her take a moment to reflect on the beauty, intricacy and fragility of bush life. When she returned to UK she sat down and wrote her story. This delightful book, written from the heart and beautifully illustrated, is a perfect gift for any Members who have children or grandchildren in this age range and Rachel hopes it will shed a little light on the plight of the natural world and a better understanding for children of our currently beleaguered times. ‘Yaro and the Rhino’ is dedicated to Rachel’s grandmother Diana Shaw, who was a long-standing Member of MCC, who died last year. Rachel will be at the Club in January to give a reading from ‘Yaro and the Rhino’ to Members’ children and their friends, and to sign copies.

‘Yaro and the Rhino’ by Rachel Shaw can be ordered on line from Amazon.

“I sincerely hope that this book brings joy and educates children in the importance of wildlife and human interaction, living in harmony rather than conflict.”

Joannah Stutchbury

John Rowland Minns

July 1957 - July 2021

November 1936 – June 2021

Joannah was born in Nairobi to Brian and Jennifer Stutchbury. The family had long and loyal ties to MCC, which Jo steadfastly maintained and was tremendously proud of. Her grandfather Hugh was the first Secretary of MCC and the first wedding to be held at Muthaiga was a Stutchbury marriage. Jo kept fond memories of Sunday afternoons at the pool with her children, reading a latest best seller from the library, eagerly waiting for afternoon tea, as well as a sneaky jelly doughnut.

I Shall Protect the Forest For Joannah Have you ever really looked at trees? Have you seen their perfect beauty? If you have, you know that their protection Is a stern and sacred duty. Protection of that spreading grandeur, Through many summers grown, Safeguarding these temples green Where the song of bird is known. When next you see the wide flung branches Of the grateful pine, Think to yourself, “A Secret Service Is part and parcel of mine. I resolved to protect all trees forever, And guard their heaven-sent beauty, To save the forest of our land Shall ever be my duty.” By Lenore Hetrick 26

Jo attended Mary Mount School in Molo and Loreto Convent Msongari and after finishing formal education she had a varied and colourful career, initially in film production including Sheena Queen of the Jungle, where she worked as Props Purchaser and The Last King of Scotland, as Art Director. She later set up her own Costume Rental company Total Escapade. Jo was always passionate about nature and loved to walk around the gardens of the Club and she increasingly involved herself in nature conservation. Turning her talents to gardening and permaculture, she was appointed Head of Landscaping & Gardens at Braeburn School, all the while positioning herself as a fearless campaigner for the protection and conservation of Kenya’s wildlife and beautiful natural habitats. Joannah’s strong will and determination to stand and fight for what most of us take for granted on a daily basis such as the cool shade of a few trees, the clean water we drink, or the fresh air that so many parents wish their children could breathe. Jo did not fight for the past or the present, but for our future. Joannah was a proud and loyal Member of MCC for 28 years. She is survived by her son and daughter. Dearly loved and missed.

Rowland was born ten minutes after his twin brother Rodney, to Dick and Audrey Minns, who farmed south of Nanyuki. This was where the twins spent their formative years and where Rowland developed his great love of nature and horses. Rodney and Rowland were sent to school at Kenton College in Nairobi where they became known as the “Terrible Twins” as they were always fighting (Rowland later represented his University as a Lightweight boxer.) The boys then went to Michaelhouse in SA, and Rowland graduated from Rhodes University in Psychology. During his early career, Rowland took on a number of jobs, working for Caltex Petroleum in Trans-Nzoia, Kenya and western Uganda; Abercrombie & Kent, and the Agricultural Society of Kenya, which he loved and where he was responsible for setting up and running agricultural shows throughout the country, including the annual ASK International Show in Nairobi. In 1965 Rowland married Judy Macleod but the marriage didn’t last. He later met Heather Elkins and her two young daughters, Fenella and Shelly. Rowland loved the girls and helped Heather bring them up as his own. In the 1970s Rowland went into the property business initially with Tysons, later taking over Donald Vincent Ltd, specialising in agricultural properties throughout Kenya for the next 28 years. Rowland was a fine horseman - in addition to show jumping, dressage, cross country eventing and ‘riding to hounds’, he also loved horse racing. He was a keen jump jockey and had many wins, his stories of broken bones, losses by a ‘short nose’ and ‘half-lengthing’ were legion. He held a ‘Flat Racing’ Private Trainer’s Licence for several years and one of his greatest moments was when Verre Dore, the horse he shared with Jane Harris, won the 1970 Kenya Derby as an outsider at 16/1. Rowland was also a keen golfer and snooker player and no mean hand at tennis. He loved fishing, both fly fishing and deep sea fishing, and still holds the Kenya record for a Wahoo he caught off Mtwapa, some 30 years ago. He had a wide knowledge of Kenyan flora and fauna and he was never happier than out on safari. Rowland was a great raconteur and had a marvellous, rather laconic sense of humour. He was fun-loving, amusing, gregarious and always the perfect gentleman. He is survived by Heather, Fenella and Shelly. He was a Life Member of MCC for over 59 years. www.mcc.co.ke

Carol Jayne Manji Carol was born in Huddersfield, UK, to Noel and Elaine Livesey. She had two brothers Ashley and Michael. Noel was a Marine Engineer and worked on Shell tankers for most of his life carrying cargo between the Americas, and for the first 15 months of her life Carol was on the tanker with her parents travelling the high seas. Carol grew up in Huddersfield and later the family moved to Walton-on-Thames in Surry. Carol was a good student and after studying Applied Biology at Hatfield Polytechnic with majors in Plant Pathology she started her career at the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries & Foods (MAFF) under the umbrella of Agricultural Development & Advisory Service (ADAS), Cambridge. Carol met Zaine Manji when her squash partner cancelled at the last moment and Zaine stepped in. He was doing his industrial training at MAFF and they became close friends. Carol joined Zaine for a short holiday in Kenya in 1981. Her suitcase was lost by the airline and she survived the entire two weeks with

Annette Muthoni Kemoli Annette Muthoni Kemoli’s life was vibrant and colourful, filled with many remarkable moments and achievements. After attending Tetu Primary School and Loreto Convent Limuru, she graduated from King George V (now Kenyatta Hospital) Nursing School. In 1972 she became the first Kenyan and woman to earn a Bachelor of Nursing, she was the youngest and first African Senior Superintendent of Nairobi City Council’s Maternity and Child Welfare in the Public Healthcare Department, and she was the recipient of the 3M Nurse of the Year Award in 1974.

what she was wearing and a pair of locally bought shorts and flip flops – Zaine figured that if she could do that and survive she would be able to live in Kenya, and he asked her to marry him. After completing his degree, they married in 1982 and moved to Kenya. Zaine found work in Naivasha, which became home for many years. It was from there they started their own plant tissue culture laboratory. To hone her skills as a plant pathologist Carol went to Southampton University and practiced tissue culture work, meanwhile Zaine formed their company Carzan. Carol ran the administration and finance, and Zaine ran the growing and technical aspects of the farms. Carol extended her skills in assisting the Horticultural Society of Kenya and the East African Women League as their Treasurer. Carol loved animals and was a regular supporter and contributor towards the KSPCA in Naivasha and would often bring home rescue dogs and donkeys. She was a very gentle and quiet person who never raised her voice or picked a fight, unless she saw an animal being mistreated – then she was known to cause chaos. In 2012 Zaine and Carol moved to Gilgil, and in the last two years Carol loved to sit outside looking across to Naivasha where they spent so many happy years, or by the pond area listening to the sounds of the birds and the waterfall. Carol was a Member of MCC for 16 years.

November 1938 – June 2021 available, her family surrounded her in love, care, comfort and companionship, and so began her final journey that lasted a decade. Annette loved her Nursing, Public Health Care and farming careers. She was a fierce patriot and pioneer. She loved Kenya and being Kenyan. She would proclaim,

Annette was one of two Kenyans chosen to study for a Diploma in Midwifery at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and she graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Canada with a BSc in Nursing.

“My generation were the Young Ones who were going to keep Kenya moving forward. We were energetic and full of ideas and we were part of the first steps of Kenya’s independent future.”

Annette was a tireless entrepreneur and participated in the pharmaceutical, beauty, entertainment and faring sectors.

She valued education highly and she guided many of her nieces into the nursing profession and was proud of the careers her children individually chose.

In 1964 Annette married the love of her life Richard Kemoli and had four children - Janice, Patricia, Fiona and Yida – and it was her family that gave her most happiness.

“Living and learning as individuals and together, my family are everything to me. They are the reason why I can give and receive so willingly.” Annette began experiencing short-term memory loss, but following a traumatic home invasion, her condition deteriorated rapidly and in 2010, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. There is no known cure for Alzheimer’s and as the only treatment www.mcc.co.ke

Annette passed away at home in the presence of her husband, her daughter and one of her caregivers. She always felt her death should not be a disruption to everyone else’s life, so she was cremated soon after, as were her wishes. Annette is survived by her husband and children, three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a well-loved Member of MCC for 17 years. Rest in peace.

December 1938 - July 2021

Charles Patrick Vincent Walker Patrick was born in Somerset in pre-war Britain to Reggie and Iris Walker. Safely ensconced in the English countryside he was joined by his brother Cecil, mid-war, and his sister Caroline, post. The family of five moved to Kenya in 1947, where they farmed at Singoiwek in Sotik; his father was Master of Hounds and so most of his boyhood revolved around a love of horses and hunting. Patrick was sent to Pembroke House and then to Kaptagat, before being cast into the outer darkness of the Home Counties where he attended Winchester College. Under the care of Vincent Lean, his maternal grandfather, he received his education before deciding that Africa was his preferred stomping ground: “It wasn’t that I was unhappy in England, rather that I was liberated in Kenya.” His professional life started at Tysons in 1959, and with the exception of a stint in the Kenya Regiment in 1961, he worked in property as developer, surveyor, valuer and director for the rest of his life. His life as a young man was active: he climbed regularly with the Mountain Club, he drove– and medalled– in the Safari Rally, and his hands were never far from a tennis racquet. He married Daphne, née Armour, and from this marriage issued first Serena, and then Roland. They lived in Tigoni, and it was during this period that he was voted onto the Muthaiga Country Club Committee—an institution that he would bolster in one form or another for the best part of 60 years. He joined as the youngest Member on the Committee in his late twenties and left as Chairman of the Club. The climax of this early chapter was a sad one. Overextended and pouring his heart into two full time jobs, he lost his best friend Peter Fisher in a car crash and, temporarily, his club in a culinary debacle mentioned on page 5. His marriage was also not to last, and with the odd bank failure and betrayal, his business was shortly to be added to the sacrificial pyre. He called this his

lost decade, and perhaps it was the nadir of his life – Patrick, however, was not a man to wallow in the mire. His second marriage to Belinda, née Weller, was happily one that would see him out. Three more children followed: Lucy, Julia, and Jamie. Professionally reinvented, he worked tirelessly across East and Central Africa. It is impossible to include all or even most of his significant projects but some highlights of this period might be Windsor Golf & Country Club, or Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, working alongside his brother Cecil and his son-in-law Charlie or perhaps Lakeview itself, his residence of the past 40 years. In 1998 he put together a deal with Peter Caroe and First Chartered Securities to set up Knight Frank in the region, where he assumed directorship until 2005. Having handed over the reins at KF, and with nary a thought of retirement, his wisdom and experience was sought after by a lengthy and impressive list of people and companies. For the past fifteen years he worked with the energy and determination of a man half his age. He resigned his directorship at The Junction only when his doctor told him in no uncertain terms that his time on this Earth was soon to be at an end. Patrick was a generalist, able to do virtually anything he set his mind to. Athlete, writer, collector – in particular of caucasian rugs, a subject on which he was an unexpected yet complete expert – horticulturalist, sage, raconteur, trusty servant and priceless mentor. His is a legacy of care and compassion, of competence and pragmatism. He died in Salaam House on the coast surrounded by his family and his animals. He leaves behind his wife, Belinda, five children, and eight grandchildren. Patrick became a Member of the Club in 1956 and joined the Main Committee as a callow youth of twenty eight years. He remained on the Committee (other than by reason of the short enforced hiatus) until 2003. From 2003 to 2004 he was an Officer of the Club and then served as Chairman of the Club from 2004 to 2008. During those years he was also chairman of the House & Finance Committee and Chairman of Committees. Patrick was the quintessential ‘Muthaiga Man’, he knew and breathed the Club. He understood and upheld its customs, conventions and eccentricities like no other. Rest in peace Patrick.
