From the Chairman Members A Happy New year to one and all. I hope you and your families had a relaxing and enjoyable festive season. We hosted nearly seven hundred for Christmas lunch and over five hundred for New Year’s dinner. Thank you to the staff and management for ensuring that all this happened with great aplomb and enormous thanks to all of you for attending those functions. We have a busy year ahead and I know the Club’s Events’ Team send out regular reminders of the incredible functions that are laid on. Enjoy those functions to the full! The Club is organising a Members’ Tent at the Ngong Racecourse for the upcoming Sirai Guineas taking place on Sunday 21st January. Please get into your Sunday best, sign up and go along for some fun. The more the merrier! I hope by now you have all met the new Club Secretary Michael Flint. I was unable to make the soiree held in December to introduce him formally to Club Members. I think it is fair to say that Michael has hit the ground running, he is full of vim and I am greatly enjoying watching him at the helm. A very warm welcome again to Michael and Lilly. We have a lot of improvement/development plans in the pipeline for the Club, as I said at the AGM, and we will be telling you about these during the course of the year. A lot of careful thought and planning has gone into this by management and the Projects sub-committee. Some serious thought is also being given to the next Chairman’s Outreach. Watch this space… I would like to welcome Lisa Karanja as an Officer of the Club alongside myself and John Ngumi. Lisa is an incisive thinker and I know we will enjoy working alongside her. Many thanks to Michael Turner who stepped down as an Officer but who remains as a Committee member. Michael’s ability to get to the heart of an issue with gin clarity is an enormous help to us on the Main Committee and I welcome his continued presence. At the beginning of another Club annual cycle, I would like to remind you of some of the cardinal rules to be followed by us all. Enjoy yourselves to the fullest extent, it is your Club after all. Please, please don’t ever be rude to the Staff – it will not be tolerated. Please do not tip the staff. If you see another Member not abiding by the by-laws, do not under any circumstances intervene yourself but please report the conduct or the incident to the management or the staff. They will deal with it. Now, friends, sit back and enjoy reading another edition of our stunning Club magazine. In this edition we have a comprehensive round-up of the events and celebrations leading up to, and during, the festive season, and the low down on some of the challenges that Members have triumphed over recently, and honours that have been bestowed. I hope you all derive enormous pleasure from your Membership of the Club in 2023. I think we are in great shape as we enter our 110th year. My warmest wishes to you and your families

From the Secretary Dear Members Many thanks for such a warm welcome and the long wait for me to get here. It has been a double dream come true… the opportunity to move back to Kenya and then to become your new Secretary. My short story: I was born in Jamaica of British parents. My father worked overseas for Citibank for 30 years. We lived in Colombia, Ecuador, Haiti, (back to) Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago. I went to boarding school in Hertfordshire, England, at Berkhamsted School. I moved to the US in 1983 and attended the University of Houston in Texas. We moved to San Francisco in 1984 where I attended the University of California, Berkeley. I remember a squash tournament between the UK and the West Indies in the 70’s at the Liguanea Club in Kingston, Jamaica. The top player from the UK was a dentist named Peter Verro. He was a James Bond type character who made an impression on me as a ten-yearold and inspired me to want to become a good squash player and a dentist! My ‘A’ levels at Berkhamsted were all sciences with Dentistry in mind. I continued on this path in Houston and then Berkeley. In my last year I had a conversation with my father about not wanting to be a dentist anymore - I had now set my heart on becoming an actor. He supportively said, “You can do anything you want, but get your degree first!” After graduation in 1987 it was off to the Big Apple to pursue my dream… a starving actor has to eat… so I got a job as a breakfast waiter at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Central Park South. Eventually I moved back to California (opened the Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco) and then to Hong Kong to open the Ritz-Carlton there. I was more successful with acting in HK, with a guest appearance on the British television series ‘Soldier, Soldier’. Then came Dubbing - I did voice-overs for Chinese Karate films until one day in 1992 I realised I needed to get back to reality. So back to the US to pursue a career in hospitality… I ended up in Florida at the Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach. From there I went on to the Boca Raton Resort & Club, then the Deer Creek Country Club and Delano Hotel (Miami Beach). I met my wife, Lilly, at the Boca Pointe Athletic Club where I was playing squash (full circle) My children, Amanda and James, were born in Boca Raton. Then it was off to Mexico City, followed by London, NYC, and back to London. Then came a pivotal opportunity in our lives… I was invited to Kenya on holiday by MCC Member Mark Somen in 2012… Long story short, he convinced me to take over from him at the Tribe Hotel. So I quit my job in London and moved the family to Nairobi. In 2015 I moved to The Bahamas (Albany Resort and Club)… and then back to Kenya in 2020 to manage the Mövenpick Hotel in Westlands – Karibu Nyumbani! I’m looking forward to taking up squash again and also to helping the Chairman revive the MCC Drama scene. Our Team pledge (aren’t our employees the Greatest!) is ‘To bring MCC back to you Members - both young and older. To encourage more Member participation by raising the bar on quality of service (hospitality) and product, through creativity, open discussion and planning. To reintroduce more Club events and activities and to develop and introduce new sports, like padel. To make our Muthaiga the best Social Members’ Club in the world.’ We have so many exciting projects to push through and uplift experiences for all Members and I am looking forward to the challenge. Best wishes,

Michael Flint MCC Secretary 2

Roving Eye

Eye was intrigued to see who enjoys a freebie came to the Club Sec’s introduction. Good turnout, fun evening, well organised, fine bar.

The new fella took time to reel off a long list of countries where he’s lived and worked and either he spends only a few months in each place or else he’s a man of, er, much lived experience. Eye thought it right to dig a little deeper, so adopted a low profile and slithered

across to the Movenpick Hotel. Turns out, on good authority, the tears wept over the former manager’s departure were neither joyous nor crocodilian – his team were genuinely sad to see him go. Imagine that! The auguries are promising… But back to the Christmas Draw, where Eye won a massive raspberry. Eye mean, how many tickets must Eye buy? Still, the event was a great success and – although the counted days of rich

hyperbole are over – it was in fact the most successful event (whisper it not abroad) EVER! Generous prizes, gracious winners, unlucky losers. Eye researched the odds of winning (about 3.8% - give or take a decimal place or two) and, undaunted, will try harder next year. After all, the more tickets you buy, the greater your chances of winning, right? Ho ho ho…

I’m delighted to inform you all that we ended 2022 with a healthy number of applications in all categories of the Club, which just shows that Membership of MCC remains highly sought-after. As we are in a New Year I thought I would politely point out a few areas that do, once in a while, slip one’s mind…

1. Membership Application * At the time of application the minimum entrance fee deposit is required in order for one’s candidate to proceed to the next stage.

The Balloting Committee welcomes any suggestions in any area you feel we can improve, and in this case, please write to Diana Waithaka, our Membership secretary - membership@mcc.co.ke

Dear Members, First and foremost, I would like to thank you for attending the AGM in large numbers and supporting the various resolutions, that were all passed with large majorities, also for your continued support, by using the Club and paying your dues on time. I am happy to report that the Club has largely weathered the shocks from Covid 19 and the global inflationary pressures and managed to achieve impressive results in the financial year ended June 2022. Costs have been managed very well and the Club’s cash position is stable.

www.mcc.co.ke

on a real time basis, with MPesa and card payments. This has, however, been possible only when Members provide their Membership account numbers in full. We kindly request that those Members who are used to using the shortened format of their account numbers please provide their Membership number in full when making payments. This is necessary because the automation only works with the full eightcharacter alpha-numeric number.

With your support, the Club is breaking even after applying subscriptions. This permits entrance fees from new Members to be ring-fenced from operations and to be used exclusively for investment in capital projects and new services, to enhance Members’ experience. Our key focus now remains to seek opportunities to invest our cash reserves in a way that secures the longterm financial sustainability of the Club. We also continue allocating adequate funds to maintain and renew Club facilities to enable us to continue delivering great value to Members in terms of quality and service. On the administration front, we have a large balance of unidentified credits and therefore remind Members to always indicate their account numbers in full when making direct deposits in the Club’s bank accounts. We also request those Members who may have deposited money in the Club’s accounts, but who have not informed us, to contact the Accounts office. We continue automating our payment processes for improved efficiency and Members accounts are now being updated

The majority of our Members are still not using the Club on a regular basis, and we therefore continue appealing to all Members, to please come and enjoy your Club more. In the meantime, with my best wishes for the New Year, I thank you again for your support of the Club.

MCC vs MGC Golf Day

“Speak Their Names” by Silvia Cassini

The annual MCC vs MGC Golf Day took place in October, hosting over 100 golfers from both Clubs in a friendly format of Stableford Greensomes, played at the ever-green Muthaiga Golf Club. Defending holders of the Centenary Trophy Muthaiga Golf Club, emerged victorious once again with 386 points, while MCC trailed by 21 points finishing with a total of 365 points. Overall Winners were the MGC team of James Ondigo & Rose Catherine on 44 points, while the Runners-Up were MCC Team Christina Engell Andersen & Jonathan Munge with 42 points. Afterwards the golfers enjoyed a sumptuous dinner and prize-giving in the MCC Ballroom.

MCC was delighted to stage the world premiere of Member and award-winning playwright, Silvia Cassini’s new play, “Speak their Names”. The play, starring leading Kenyan actors including Brian Ogola, Nini Wacera and Nixsa Shah, opened to a full-house on both nights, to huge acclaim. MCC Chairman Philip Coulson and Silvia held a Q&A session after the opening night performance. They are pictured above on the set of “Speak their Names”.

Christmas Carols Winners of the 1st Nine - MCC Team Charles & Suzan Mwangi with Sponsor Joy Atieno.

One of MCC’s most beloved Christmas events for old and young Members to all come together is the Christmas Carol Service. This year was a particularly vocal and joyful occasion with our inimitable comperes Steve Mills and Mike Craig conducting affairs. Singing together all our favourite carols, the evening was a festive and happy one for families. Overall Runners-Up - MCC Team Jonathan Munge & Christina Engell Andersen with MGC Chairman Ronald Meru. 6

squash The squash courts continue to be a busy part of the Club with tournaments and matches increasing throughout the year. In September we held the British Rules Tournament, which attracted a strong turnout of 16 players. At the end of a grueling contest Kunal Bid defended his title beating Rajeev Gandhi in the finals and Jeremy Clayton beat Joseph Kariuki in the plate competition. My special thanks go to Tournament sponsors Dry Associates Ltd and to Sachi Mohindra for gifting the players Biofreeze products. In November we held the Muthaiga Closed Challenge Cup and Nina Bell Trophy, which were sponsored by J W Seagon Ltd this year. The Muthaiga Closed Challenge is the most hotly contested of the challenges and Kenya’s oldest tournament, which started in 1914. Once again 16 players entered. Daniel Szalpak defeated Kunal Bid in the finals to retake the title he has previously held, and Jeremy Clayton defeated Fabian Collis to win the Nina Bell Trophy for the first time.

Club Singles The annual Singles competition attracted 13 bowlers this year. The final was a closely fought match, which ended with Essie Walker winning the trophy against Ian Stamp, who was also our gracious sponsor.

Ladies vs Gents Bowling Competition This year’s competition attracted 24 bowlers - including the new Secretary Michael Flint and his wife Lilly. All six rinks were used with 5 Gents vs 5 Ladies Pairs and one Gents vs Ladies Trip played. At the end of play both the Ladies and the Gents had won three matches each, but based on score difference the Ladies won the competition - and by a wide margin. Essie Walker won the Spider. The Ladies vs Gents competition marks the end of competitive bowling for 2022 and the green is now closed for maintenance until mid-January.

WILLIE WATSON TROPHY Willie’s daughter Sheena Dryden presented the prizes.

Winner of the Singles competition Essie Walker Club Pairs sponsored by Marion and Gordon Watson held in September was a great success. Twelve competitors entered six teams. It was a well-balanced competition with winners determined only on the last game. Oliver Fowler and Clare Jethwa won the competition; Gerry and Halina were very close runners up. The spider was won by Gerry and Halina.

The Willie Watson Invitational Trips . competition was a tremendous success with forty-eight bowlers, forming sixteen teams, from five clubs around the country taking part. The participating clubs were MCC, Nairobi, Karen, Ruiru and Mombasa. The teams were divided randomly into four groups, each team playing each other, then on Sunday the knockout competition was held for the Trophy, the Plate, the Bowl and the Basket. The finals saw Ruiru take the Trophy in a well-deserved win, Muthaiga A won the Plate, Nairobi won the Bowl, and Muthaiga B won the Basket. tennis Our “Cup of Nations” annual mixed doubles tournament attracted only seven players. Nevertheless, with one of the tennis staff to make up numbers, we were still able to run a Mini Round-Robin Competition with four pairs. After an extremely competitive session Team USA - Harold Zagunis & Tamara Krautkramer emerged as the winners of the event by just one point against joint Runners-up Team EU Richard (Staff) & Fui Meng Liew and Team UK - Johnny Ponsonby & Alec Davis. Kenya’s first Grand Slam Junior Wimbledon winner Angella Okutoyi, was spotted at the MCC Tennis courts in December. Invited by an MCC Member of the Young President Organization (YPO), she held a fun afternoon of tennis drills with young players. We wish Angella all the best as she heads on to University of Auburn in the United States to further her budding tennis career and studies in the process.

Disappointingly, our annual “Christmas Crackers” Mixed Doubles Tournament, which had 30 registered players, had to be rescheduled as the courts were too wet for play. However, a festive lunch at the Tennis Pavilion still went ahead and was a wonderful opportunity to say thank you to outgoing Tennis Captain John Goodwin for his commitment, enthusiasm and dedication to the Section over the past six years. John handed over the Captaincy to Aida Kimemia Nesbitt, who together with Tennis Committee members Johnny Ponsonby (Vice-Captain), Katarina Karanja, Rachel Wootton and Troels Mahieu-Sørensen, will further promote the sport at MCC.

Tennis Captain Aida Kimemia Nesbitt, with out-going Captain John Goodwin & Vice-Captain Johnny Ponsonby. Two weeks later, under clear blue skies the rescheduled “Christmas Crackers” tournament took place with 20 participants. The tournament format entailed the 10 initial pairs randomly selecting a Court to start on. After each match, the winning pairs moved up a court and split, while the losing pairs moved down a court and split. Winners on Court 1 stayed put (and split) as did losing pairs on Court 5. Five rounds were played and the eventual prize-winners were those who ended up on Courts 1 & 2.

The overall winners were Rishi Ramrakha & Fui Meng Liew with Runners-up Harold Zagunis & Tom Tilson. Third and fourth places went to Troels Mahieu-Sørenson & Makena Nesbitt and Yan Welffens & Alex Lehmberg respectively.

East African Chronicles Archive Collection

Old Sewing Machine for MCC Heritage Collection The most recent addition to the growing list of exhibits in the Muthaiga Country Club’s Heritage Collection is an ancient Singer sewing machine donated by Bob Dewar. The machine belonged to Bob’s mother, and when she left England to marry Bob’s father, she brought it with her to Kenya. After their marriage ceremony in Mombasa Cathedral, the newly wed Mr and Mrs Dewar travelled to Nairobi by train to set up their home. The sewing machine was soon put to frequent use to make curtains, napkins, tablecloths and family clothes. Mrs Dewar was an enthusiastic seamstress and throughout her life spent many hours making outfits for her family and friends. When Mrs Dewar, died Bob kept her trusty sewing machine and recently donated it to the Muthaiga Heritage Collection where it will be displayed for the enjoyment of all Members as a reminder of a by-gone age.

The MCC Heritage Collection was also delighted to receive a wonderful set of East African Chronicles, kindly donated by the Shaw family. The East African Chronicle was an Indian newspaper that came out every Saturday. It was founded by the local Indian activist Manilal Ambilal Desai, after whom Desai Road is named. Desai was pushing for a universal franchise, and was great friends with Harry Thuku, who had similar ambitions. These will go into the Muthaiga Club Archive as a valuable part of Kenya’s history. It is hoped that other Club Members with unwanted historic items will offer them for consideration by the Heritage Collection committee for inclusion in the exhibition. KAR & EA Forces Gallantry Awards by Harry Fecitt The renowned military historian, Harry Fecitt has been working with the King’s African Rifles & East African Officers Association to pull together all the gallantry awards for the E.A. Forces from WWI and WWII. The Association recently donated an inscribed copy of the two-volume set to the Muthaiga Heritage Collection. The list of gallantry awards covers a vast array of men and women from both World Wars, from knighthoods right the way down to bonuses for men of the Carrier Corps. It is a remarkable piece of research, which shows just what professional a military force East Africa produced. Little known are the likes of the Sudanese soldier Sergt. George Williams of the 3rd King’s African Rifles (the Kenyan battalion which is now 3 Kenya Rifles, the KDF’s senior regiment) who was awarded not one but two Distiguished Conduct Medal (DCM), one of which was for being refused a Victoria Cross, the highest gallantry award for British troops. 2022 McMaster University Distinguished Alumni Award for the Arts MCC Member Bob Munro CM recently received the 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award for the Arts from his Canadian alma mater, McMaster University. This award is presented to alumni of McMaster University who have distinguished themselves through outstanding scholarship, research, or creative contributions to the arts or sciences, or service to society. The award honours alumni whose accomplishments and contributions are of national or international significance, and have had a transformative impact on their field of endeavour. World Commission in Environment and Development (WCED). In his spare time, Bob founded the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) in one of Africa’s largest and poorest slums, finding inspiration in his own boyhood experiences of playing sport.

Bob Munro is pictured here receiving the 2022 McMaster University Distinguished Alumni Award from McMaster President Dr David Farrar. The honour was awarded for Bob’s work on sustainable development and also with the youth in Mathare, one of Africa’s largest and poorest slums. The award was in recognition of his many achievements over the last five decades in initiating and improving sustainable development policies from global to local levels, as well as for being the Founder/Chairman of the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) which, since 1987, has been a global pioneer for the now worldwide sport for development and peace movement. Bob began an international career that led to setting up a new Environmental Division in the UN’s economic Commission for Europe in Geneva. He helped prepare the Action Plan at the first UN Environment Conference in 1972 in Stockholm, which launched the worldwide environmental movement. Soon after he helped set up the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi as well as the UN-Habitat agency. During the 1980s and 90s Bob was a Senior Policy Advisor for the www.mcc.co.ke

MYSA uses sport in combination with community outreach and development activities to give young people the skills and confidence they need to aim higher, achieve more and build brighter futures for themselves. Over 30,000 boys and girls from Mathare now participate in the MYSA self-help youth sports, environmental cleanups, AIDS prevention, leadership training, jailed kids’ rehabilitation, slum libraries and other community service projects. In addition to helping themselves, the Mathare youth also help youngsters in similar projects across Africa. There are now over 150,000 MYSA members and alumni in Kenya and abroad, and in the decades since it began, the youth from the Mathare slums have become the global pioneers in using sport as a force for good by bringing people together to celebrate athletic achievements and inspiring the now worldwide movement on sport for development and peace. MYSA has earned numerous international awards, including two Nobel Peace nominations but, says Bob, MYSA's most important achievement is producing new heroes, role models and leaders within and outside Kenya.

As a boy, through sport, we learned vital lessons and social skills. We learnt that achievement is our reward for self-discipline and training, for getting fit and, most importantly, for extra effort and teamwork. We learned to cope with losing as well as winning, gaining insights into our weaknesses and self-confidence from our victories. We also learned to respect the rules, our coaches, our referees, our teammates and even our opponents. Three decades later the Mathare Youth Sports Association became my payback, giving the poor youth in Mathare the same chance as I had had. THERE IS NO PLANET B! Founded by MCC Member Juliet Kennedy (née Aggmanning) Greenspoon is an online food store that promotes honestly delicious food, produced by small, artisanal farmers and manufacturers, whose produce has been carefully selected for quality (which includes flavour and authentic ingredients that are aren’t mass produced), for environmental impact (how products are made and packaged) and for community impact (which includes fair pay, and good conditions for workers). Greenspoon was recently officially certified as Africa’s first grocery retail B Corporation and here Juliet explains the rationale behind her revolutionary business practice and what the certificate means to Greenspoon. Qualifying as a B Corp is not straightforward - we have to show a detailed social and environmental mission. We have a legally binding responsibility to take into account not just the needs and interests of our people, but also the broader community and the environment. Greenspoon provides a platform for over 100 small, artisanal producers, to bring their products to market, to offer our customers authentic, sustainably sourced, delicious foods that have been produced with minimal environmental impact and fair trade. The Greenspoon Team B Corp is a non-profit organisation, endorsing a growing movement for change. Its mission aims to transform business across the globe to be a force for good, and the certification looks at all elements of a business, with the aim of transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities and the planet. At Greenspoon, our deep concern for people and the planet is at the heart of what we do - we put this before profit. We hear about climate change daily with farmers telling us of their struggles caused by changing weather patterns, and not just the impact it has on their own livelihoods, but also on all those in their ecosystem, which of course includes us as their customers, and you as ours. The reality is our planet is warming up, more and more species and ecosystems are becoming endangered, and we are all affected. But there is no Planet B and we need to make changes quickly.

Our mission is to change the way our customers shop, we hope that they will consider whether what they buy is good for them, good for the planet, and good for the local economy. We’ve paid an annual fee, and we will have to complete a B Impact Report every three years. It’s not easy, but we know it’s important. In today’s world, there is no excuse for any business to ignore the warning signs. Going after growth for the sake of profit alone is a fast track way to miss out on opportunities that can help regenerate the planet, and strengthen our communities and social systems. To support a B Corp, is to support a business that puts people and planet before profit.

This Mother Earth of ours is to be nurtured, not pillaged. In business, the days of profit for profit’s sake, with no consideration for sustainability, are over. Our B Corp Certification recognises our commitment to people and the planet and we are incredibly proud and very excited to be officially certified as Africa’s first grocery retail B Corporation. bird quiz

Bird Quiz Recently, in my garden, an immature raptor was found dead beneath a tree in which there are several nests. How the bird died is a mystery upon which you may speculate, but its identity can be more conclusive.

There are two candidates, and both adult species are illustrated. Identify the two adult raptors and decide which the young bird is related to and why. On a bird walk not long ago, I came across two black birds. Between them was a bird that I recognised as a female Black Cuckoo-Shrike. One of the two male black birds is her mate, the other is not.

Which is the male Black Cuckoo-Shrike and what is the identity of the other bird?

Kenyan prodigy, 15-year-old Shirlene Obara - still a student at the Manchester School of Music - is exceptional. What added enormously to the success of the whole concert was Michael James’ re-arrangement of the orchestral music, cleverly adapting it to a string quartet with piano playing a prominent accompanying part. He made it sound like a whole orchestra. This is a concert not to miss! It is the most riveting concert I have heard in many years.

COMMAND by Lawrence Freedman

HORSE by Geraldine Brooks

WALKING WITH NOMADS by Alice Morrison

Command in war is about forging effective strategies and implementing them, making sure that orders are appropriate, wellcommunicated, and then obeyed. But it is also an intensely political process. This is largely because how wars are fought depends to a large extent on how their aims are set. It is also because commanders in one realm must possess the ability to work with other command structures, including those of other branches of the armed forces and allies. In Command, Lawrence Freedman explores the importance of political as well as operational considerations in command with a series of eleven vivid case studies, all taken from the period after 1945.

Don’t let the title fool you; Geraldine Brooks’s Horse is not Black Beauty for grownups. Yes, the title character is one of history’s most famous equine celebrities, a foal named Lexington, who later became revered as the fastest horse in the world. But first and foremost, Horse is a thrilling story about humanity in all its ugliness and beauty.

Scottish explorer and TV presenter Alice Morrison takes the reader on three remarkable and inspirational journeys across Morocco, from the Sahara to the Atlas mountains, accompanied only by a trio of Muslim men and their camels, in a narrative that is part breathless adventure and part urgent warning about the ravages of climate change.

Since the late 1990s our age has been largely defined by war, beginning with Chechnya and the former Yugoslavia and intensifying with 9/11 and the decision to overthrow Saddam Hussein. The Ukraine war has forced the age-old question – whose finger is really on the trigger? Is it the politicians or the people in uniform in charge? Freedman summons an extraordinary range of post-1945 commanders from Mike Jackson in Kosovo, Stormin’ Norman Schwartzkopf in Iraq, David Patraeus in Baghdad and Stan McChrystal in Kabul and finds that some basic principals apply – democracies really do fight wars more effectively, and dictators really do make rotten strategists. Command is the history of our time, told through war. It’s an impressive feat of storytelling, as well as an essential account of how the modern world wars have been fought and how command, in the future, will look in a world that is becoming increasingly reliant on technologies like artificial intelligence. www.mcc.co.ke

Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington, Brooks started out with a story about a racehorse but, as she began to research the history of thoroughbred racing in America, she realised that this novel could not merely be about a racehorse, it would also need to be about race. A discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in American history: from these strands, Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks braids a sweeping story of spirit, obsession, and injustice across American history. Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. New York City, 1954. Martha Jackson, a gallery owner becomes obsessed with a nineteenthcentury equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance. Washington DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a NigerianAmerican art historian, find themselves connected through their shared interest in the horse - one studying the stallion’s bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success. It is the voices of the different characters that make the novel as delightful to read as it is thought provoking and with her rigorous historical research and polished storytelling, this novel is a page-turner.

During her journey along the Draa river, she encountered dinosaur footprints and discovered a lost city, as well as what looked like a map of an ancient spaceship, all the while trying to avoid landmines, quicksand and the deadly horned viper. Meeting other nomads as they travel, Alice also gets to hear a side of their lives few ever access, as the women would never be allowed to speak to men from outside their community. They explain the challenges of giving birth and raising children in the desert wilderness. As the journey continues, Alice learns to enjoy goat’s trachea sausages, gets a saliva shower from Hamish the camel as he blows out his sex bubble, and enjoys campfire conversations with her fellow travellers. Morrison’s lush descriptions of her dramatic surroundings and her quirky observations of nomadic life, transports the reader to another timeless world of desert dunes, and camel trains, but few places better illustrate the reality of climate change and the encroachment of the desert. Morrison brings to life the challenges faced by the tribes of the desert that are being inflamed by climate change and reveals how the ancient world of the nomad is under threat as never before. Theirs boils down to a life of basic survival – if there will be any water left to boil. Both an other-worldly adventure through an ancient landscape Walking with Nomads is also a dire warning of the growing challenges faced by our planet.

Several Muthaiga Members recently took on the Rift Valley Odyssey cycling challenge. Here one of them breathlessly peddles the upside of this long, gruelling ride (great views, clear air, being fit) and freewheels the downside (numb bum, lycra and surprisingly - 'bonking').

If you share disdain for Mamils (middleaged men in lycra) and are even more despairing of Fosils (frighteningly old specimens in the same slinky stuff), then this might not be for you. On the other hand, if you have a mountain bike and are hankering for a challenge, then the Rift Valley Odyssey is worth thinking about. In late September, several Muthaiga Members took part in the Rift Valley Odyssey, riding between six and ten hours a day for five days (there is a three-day version, but if you’re in for a penny then you might as well be in for a proverbial), and it was tough. All off-road, mostly on narrow tracks and remote paths, the route was never flat. But here’s the thing: it took us through some of the most outstandingly beautiful parts of Kenya, finding places and viewpoints that we would otherwise never have seen – and that’s why it’s recommended.

Climb and distance This year, the route was about 450km. More intimidating, there were nearly 8km of hills to climb. That’s at least 1,500 metres of ascent every day, sometimes pushing bikes up through steep woods, sometimes slogging up long stretches of gradual incline. Still, what goes up also comes down and there were some thrilling sections, which those of less nervous disposition would hammer down at 60kph or more.

Training Needs to be done, otherwise – as the blurb has it – the Odyssey will be an Ordeal. You’ll need to be riding between 10 and 22

Muthaiga Country Club January - March 2023

15 hours a week before the event and, crucially, you should be accustomed to longer rides of at least four or five hours at a time. This particular fosil put in the hours but regretted not having practised longer stints because saddles can become bum-numbingly sore.

Pick your partner For safety, you’re required to enter the Rift Valley Odyssey in teams of two or three. My partner was patient, practical, easy-natured, good company, and onethird my age; he fixed punctures, took pictures, stayed calm, poured beers, kept smiling. Other teams comprised either semi-professionals (people flew in from South Africa, Zimbabwe, England, even Alaska), geeks (turns out some people really know and care about bicycles), or enthusiasts who like a challenge. One competitor from the UK admitted to only recently having tried out a mountain bike; the wrong side of 60, living at sea-level, he loved the countryside, the companionship and the challenge. That’s the kind of hardy person you need in your team (he later admitted it was the hardest thing he’d ever done). In 2022 (the event has been going www.mcc.co.ke

members' achievements

for 12 years) no woman took part, which perhaps proves that ladies have good sense.

Lexicon Leaving aside talk of derailleurs (which is French for ‘Don’t f*** with it’), cassettes, droppers and hydraulics (it’s only a bicycle for goodness’ sake!), your correspondent learned about bonking. Previously encountered as a fun recreational activity to be carried out whenever possible, it turns out to be a cycling term that means ‘hitting the wall’ – the moment when your legs simply can’t pedal any more. (The etymology is unsubtle but makes sense.) Still, the RVO is not a race and never will be. As our race official advised at the start, “If you’re not stopping to take pictures, then you’re the fool”. Viewpoints are ideal for bonking, providing an excuse to drop your bike and admire the scenery.

Route – Limuru, Lake Naivasha, Mount Suswa, Loita Hills, Maji Moto, Maasai Mara. Day 1 - you start at Brackenhurst, climb 50-odd km through the Gatamaiyu Forest and southern tip of the Aberdares before descending another 40-something km through Hell’s Gate to Carnelleys in Naivasha. Day 2 - is shorter but arguably tougher as you head through Hell’s Gate up the Mau Escarpment and then double back to Mount Suswa where, fortunately, you no longer need to cycle to the rim. Local landowners find sweaty cyclists unsettling on the spirits and so we found ourselves in a small, seldom-used lodge, far from any beaten track. Day 3 - has 100km of rough and rocky bush tracks taking you to the confluence of the Seyapei and Ewaso Nyiro rivers, and onward to Maji Moto. Day 4 - another 100km eventually finds you in the Loita Hills. (We arrived in a basic camp in the back-of-beyond to be greeted by the Rusty Nail’s excellent team and treated to cold beer and delicious food.) And, at last, the final day sees you skirting the border with Tanzania as you ride through glorious rolling savannah to finish at the Instinct of the Mara luxury camp.

Highlights Cyclists are a funny bunch – there were only about 20 of us – and some are genuinely amusing. So the company is good, the views are breathtaking, the dawn starts are magnificent, the air becomes clearer and cleaner than any Alpine breeze, you see places and peoples that you would otherwise never… and you will feel fit. Highly recommended. www.mcc.co.ke

Barbara Jeanne FitzGerald

May 1929 - September 2022

Barbara Fitzgerald (née Hogg) was born in London, where her father worked in Cavendish Square. Later the family moved to Surrey until the start of the war, when her mother took her and younger brother Mike, to South Petherton in Somerset. There they farmed chickens and rabbits, which they sent by post to London friends and family to alleviate war rations. Barbara attended Croham Hurst School, which was also evacuated to Somerset, then moved to school in Swanage. She completed her education at the Eastbourne School of Domestic Economy, followed by a year’s Secretarial course in London.

the Shimo La Tewa School in Mtwapa, before joining the Namanga River Hotel. Her next adventure was as DC’s Secretary in Nyeri, thereon catering at the White Rhino Hotel.

Fully prepared for a new life in Africa and turning 20 on board, Barbara sailed to Mombasa with her family to a farm near Thompson’s Falls (Nyaharuru) which was her base for many years between jobs and marriages.

Devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Barbara was accomplished at needlework, crafting many a treasured tapestry cushion. Hospitable and entertaining, the FitzGerald home was the lively centre for Bridge parties and fine cooking. Her culinary and flower arranging skills were called upon for many society weddings. Barbara enjoyed books and was on the

After Barbara married Desmond FitzGerald, she then had a spell in Nairobi working at Bunson’s Travel, before being appointed Secretary to the East African Wildlife Society, where she stayed until her daughter Katie was born in 1967. During the following 50 years she lived in a variety of homes around Nairobi, Karen, Kiambu, Tigoni and latterly Fairseat.

She was a loyal and popular Member of the Club for 61 years and she is missed by her many friends, fellow Members and MCC staff.

June 1937 - October 2022 relationship with that mountain range. On being demobilised, he embarked on a career as an accountant, and joined Nondies RFC. His years with Coopers & Lybrand allowed him opportunities to travel the region by motorbike, auditing clients’ accounts from Mwanza to Malindi. He maintained vibrant memories of these motorbike safaris through then-wild country.

Rob was born in June 1937, in Nairobi. His family moved to Uganda, from where he attended the Hill School at Eldoret. When his family returned to Nairobi, he enrolled at the Prince of Wales School, where he excelled both on the playing field and in the art classroom.

He interrupted these adventures for those of a more urbane kind, moving to London to work for Reuters on Fleet Street. The attractions of 1970s London provided but a brief interlude, and in Rob’s assessment could never compensate for the excitement, drama and beauty of life in Kenya. While in England he did, however, contemplate a career beyond that of a dowdy accountant, and he was encouraged by a short sojourn with the noted artist Michael Lyne.

At the age of 18 he received his draft papers, and spent much of his National Service trout fishing in the Aberdares – the beginning of a long and fond

young nurse, newly arrived at Nairobi Hospital from St. Stephen’s in London. Fleur would be his wife for the next 45 years. Together they raised three sons, living first in Nairobi, then in the Rift Valley, and latterly in Laikipia. Rob forged a successful career as an artist, capturing the wildlife, landscapes and people of the country he loved. His work allowed him to spend extensive periods of time on safari; he was never happier than with a vista of unspoilt country rolling away before him, and the sounds and scents of the bush all around. Rob was a Member of Muthaiga Club for 54 years – a haven on his infrequent trips to ‘town’, the venue for many an exhibition, and a place of comforting continuity in a rapidly changing world. Rob was fiercely independent to the end. He passed away at the thorough age of 85, at his home on the Burguret River, after a short illness. He is survived by his wife Fleur, their three sons Liam, Robert and Oliver and three grandchildren. January - March 2023 Muthaiga Country Club

James Skeoch Grant

who had moved to Kenya in 1948, invited him to stay. He arrived in Solai in 1951, whereupon his aunt sponsored him to attend Egerton College where he studied Agriculture for two years. Whilst at Njoro he met the love of his life, Jix Vernon, at Blair Shaw’s farm at Turi. Whilst at Egerton he gained work experience on various farms, often in the Ol Kalou area, which was quite exciting at that time, due to the Mau Mau Emergency.

Jim was the eldest heir of a long line of Grants hailing from Glen Urquhart in the Scottish Highlands, a heritage of which he was very proud, although he always thanked his Danish grandfather for mixing up his gene pool!

In 1955, Jim married Jix at the Anglican Cathedral in Nairobi, followed by a reception at Government House! He then embarked on his career in the coffee industry, starting out at the Coffee Research Foundation in Ruiru, where he met Philip Coldham, one of the original coffee planters in Kenya, and son of the Squire of Anmer Hall, which is where Prince William lives today.

He was the eldest of three children, almost born on a ship inbound to Edinburgh from Rangoon. Jim was schooled at the Edinburgh Academy, and then did his National Service in the Royal Artillery in Egypt, where he spent his time quelling riots, and where his grandfather ‘Cairo’ Grant had, coincidentally, lived before the WWI.

Soon afterwards Jim was appointed assistant manager on Anmer Estate in Kiambu. Further estates in Kiambu were amalgamated over the years to form Kamiti Valley Coffee Estates Ltd, which was floated on the Nairobi Stock Exchange. Sadly this jewel of a company, where Jim had risen through the ranks to be the Managing Director, had to be closed in favour of Mbo-i-Kamiti Cooperative, in keeping with the politics of the time. It was hard to keep the plantations working, and sadly, in 1982, he had to give up his life’s work and those carefully manicured estates.

Having tragically lost his father when he was 16, a very dear aunt (Julia MacEwan),

Jim then joined KPCU Coffee Mills as the Operations Director, but he missed

his farming days. He retired to Windy Ridge in Karen, but he wasn’t there very long before his brother Hugh died in Scotland, leaving his sister Sheila to look after the old family property alone. He and Jix decided to head back to the West Highlands in 1998 to help out, building a beautiful house with a stunning view of the mountains all around. They continued to come out to Kenya to visit their son Ken every year, until they moved down to Kent to be closer to their other son Murray. Later Jix sadly had to be moved into a Care Home but in 2022, Jim decided that they should return to Kenya, where they could both be under the same roof at the Nanyuki Cottage Hospital. They arrived in August 2022 and Jim was extremely happy to be back. He was looking forward to seeing old friends and old haunts - Muthaiga Club being high on that list. Sadly this was not to be, as nine days after they arrived, having settled his beloved Jix into the Cottage Hospital, he died very suddenly and unexpectedly. He was extremely strong and active up to the last, still driving around, and always enjoying a good laugh. Jim is survived by Jix, his wife of 67 years, and their two sons, Murray and Kenneth, and their families. He was a man of great integrity, dedication, courage, and absolute devotion. In recent years he was bestowed Honorary Life Membership of MCC, having been a Member for 47 years.

Answers to Bird Quiz on Page 19 The dead chick is a Great (or Black) Sparrowhawk as is the raptor on the left. Chicks are difficult to identify, but remember the feet grow first and so they look huge. Big key is the extralong middle toe, distinguishing it as a bird hunter, and tiny outer talon that is just used for gripping. The inner and back talons are much larger as this species uses those for the killing blows.

SWEEPSTAKES JANUARY 2023

The other bird is an African Goshawk.

From left – male Southern Black Flycatcher, female Black Cuckoo-Shrike, male Black Cuckoo-Shrike.
