Eee, bah gum! Our Lisa’s been out exploring Emmerdale’s TV set – a location that has witnessed many a cliff hanger...
“My friend Leigh and I treated our mums to a visit to the Emmerdale Studio Experience - what a magical place it is, especially if you’re a fan of the ITV soap. We all found it really interesting as our informative and friendly guide showed us around some of the iconic sets. We saw the production office, costumes and make-up departments, played with the lighting and cameras and
learned all about special effects such as the helicopter crash into the village hall during the wedding of Debbie & Pete. But the best part of the tour had to be sitting in the Woolpack, we could even go behind the bar to pull a pretend pint! We had a really good time and I’d highly recommend it. A must do for soap fans!
If you’d like to experience Emmerdale, why not join one of our tours? We have holidays departing from Scotland, staying at the enchanting Old Golf Hotel in Huddersfield and including visits to the National Media Museum and Skipton as well as the Emmerdale Studio Experience.

WIld ATlANTIC WAy GLENTON’S Hotel Contracts Manager, Ann McDonald, along with Michelle Kane from our operations team embarked on a voyage of discovery as they took in Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way... Our tour began in the adorable little village of Adare where we popped into the intriguing heritage centre - an interactive exhibition tracing local history from the time of the Normans. From here, it was onwards into the lush countryside to witness a sheep dog demonstration on the Ring of Kerry! We watched amazed as the dogs responded to whistled commands then, once the flock was safely in the pen, we had a chance to pat them along with the clever collies! Later, we checked in at the Butler Arms Hotel in Waterville – the hotel where silent movie star Charlie Chaplin famously holidayed with his family every year during the 1960s. The town now boasts a statue of the much-loved comedian. Next morning, we set off for coastal Caherdaniel for a seaweed walk, talk – and tasting! Yes, we dined on marinated sea
spaghetti washed down with elderflower champagne then learned the history of seaweed usage over the centuries. Moving on, we crossed the bridge to rugged Valentia Island with its wave-thrashed beaches and skyscraping lighthouse. Here we spent some time at the Skellig Experience where exhibitions ranged from local archaeology to the habitat of seabirds. Another day dawned and, after a brief stop to take in the views at picturesque Molls Gap (named after a woman who ran a drinking hole of dubious reputation!), we arrived at Muckross House & Gardens. This stunning Victorian mansion overlooks a sparkling lake and boasts the splendid backdrop of Killarney National Park. After a tour of this elegant manor and lunch in its restaurant, we hopped aboard a traditional jaunting car for a fun-filled spin around Killarney. Our adventure continued as we called in at Blennerville Windmill, a dominant landmark on the shores of Tralee Bay at the

edge of the Dingle Peninsula. The largest working windmill in Ireland, we found an exhibition gallery, craft shop, an emigration display and a bird watching platform with a telescope overlooking the ‘Way of the Birds’. We continued to the Kerry County Museum where our guided tour took in priceless artefacts, polar explorer Tom Crean’s room and a stroll through the centuries at the Medieval Experience. Must-sees the following day kicked off with a visit to Foynes Flying Boat Museum in County Limerick. Here we enjoyed the Irish Coffee Experience Tour thanks to its connection with this famous tipple - the whiskey hot drink was served here for the very first time in 1943 as a means of warming up cold and weary passengers! We then stepped aboard the world’s only replica Boeing 314 Clipper, a walk-in exhibit that whisks you back in time to the romantic era of the famous flying boats and features an authentic 1940s cinema. We moved on to Limerick and to King John’s Castle, standing proudly on King’s Island in the heart of this medieval city. The stunning
new exhibition at this fortress brings 800 years of sieges to life with 3D models and 21st century touch-screens that connect you with the dramatic history of incomparable Ireland. Sightseeing over, it was back to business as we attended Meitheal – Ireland’s largest tourist industry event. This annual two day workshop is a fantastic opportunity to meet up with our Irish trade partners and an unmissable way of making sure we deliver to our customers the very latest of the Emerald Isle’s outstanding attractions.

THE STRANGE SCOTTISH WINERy Scotland - famous for whiskey, haggis, bagpipes, kilts...and wine! The Cairn O’Mohr plantation enjoys an idyllic spot amidst the berry bearing Carse of Gowrie in picturesque Perthshire. Dubbed the “Strange Scottish Winery” by owners Ron and Judith Gillies, the dreamy location of this wine producing estate matches the romance of their love story: the couple met playing poker aboard a river boat in the steamy, mosquito infested mangroves of the Panamanian jungle! As their eyes locked, they instantly knew they would end up making fruit wines in the heart of Scotland... And so it began. The year was 1987 when Ron and Judith, surrounded by lush, hedgefringed fields and armed with a bottle, a book and a stick, began turning their eccentric vision into a reality. Using locally sourced berries and blossoms, the
production of mouth-watering, juicy-fruity wines and ciders got underway. Top quality raspberries, strawberries and elderberries were freshly picked, traditional fermentation methods used then the pioneering product was left for at least a year to mature. The result? Smooth, full bodied flavours infused into a luscious wine that tantalises the taste buds! Over the years, limited editions have made an occasional appearance such as Cheery Currant and the sparkling Oak & Elder Ron and Judith created for their own wedding. As the business flourished, they opened a tasting room then began quirky tours so visitors could share the joy of their leafy location, get an insight into the mysterious comings and goings of their wine making process and sample a snifter or two of their award winning wares. With business

notable events such as the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh. Naturally, all that wine leads to a mountain of empties. So, once a year, they put the bottles to an amusing purpose with their International Bottle Smashing Tournament. On this noteworthy day, competitors are given seven empty bottles to throw at a rock, the aim being to break as many as they can. The record is four, in case you’re wondering - perhaps you’re up for the challenge?
booming and a regular stream of callers, they opened their Alibob café and sun deck. For Ron and Judith, it was time to celebrate...with the purchase of a shiny new...wheelbarrow. Fast forward three decades from those heady days and Cairn O’Mohr is now a highly rated visitor attraction as well as producer of exceptional wines which are supplied to hotels, sold online and delivered to supermarket chains such as ASDA. In between wine producing and hosting entertaining tours, the indefatigable Ron and Judith man stalls at farmers markets across the country as well as at

Its medieval heart lies in the vast piazza del Campo – a huge forum flanked by weathered buildings that film buffs might recognise as a location from the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace. Puzzles
Can you work out who the famous people are from the clues below?
Who am I
?
?
an actor, I was born on February 8, 1931 in the small town of Marion in Indiana and given the middle name of Byron after the famous poet. My Dad, Winton, was a dental technician and we moved to Los angeles for his work. I studied violin, played in concerts and tap-danced on theatre stages. Tragically, my Mom, Mildred, became ill and passed away when I was just nine. I never found out the reason for Mom’s death and it preyed on my mind all my life. Her loss meant my return to Indiana to be raised by my aunt. after graduating from high school, I returned to California to attend Santa Monica Junior College. I also went to an acting workshop, appeared in television commercials then played several small roles in films and on stage. In 1951 I moved to new York where I won a part in a Broadway play entitled See the Jaguar. I became one of the youngest people to become a member of the actors Studio – fellow members included the likes of Marlon Brando! I moved to Hollywood and starred in East of Eden then won the role of Jim Stark in 1955’s Rebel Without A Cause. I was nominated for two academy awards, celebrated my success by buying a Porsche and entered the Palm Springs Road Races. Later I entered Bakersfield Race, finished shooting Rebel then entered one more race in Santa Barbara before joining the crew of “Giant” in Texas. En route to compete in a race in Salinas in 1955, my life ended at the age of twenty-four in a highway accident. I once said, “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.”
an actor, I was born Issur Danielovitch in new York in 1916, the son of poor, Russian-Jewish immigrants. I worked odd jobs to pay for my college education and to support myself while studying acting at the american academy of Dramatic arts. after serving in the U.S. navy during World War II and a brief career on the Broadway stage, I made my first Hollywood film in 1946, starring with Barbara Stanwyck in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. Three years later, I stunned audiences and critics with my portrayal of boxer Midge Kelly in the film, Champion which earned me my first academy award nomination. I became a big box-office draw and often appeared with my friend and fellow Hollywood star, Burt Lancaster, in such films as Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. I have received many honors, including the Life achievement award from the american Film Institute, Kennedy Center honoree, an honorary academy award and the national Medal of arts. I have married twice, had two sons, Joel and Michael, with my first wife, Diana, and then in 1954, I married anne and had another two sons, Peter and Eric. Heartbreakingly, Eric died of a drug overdose in 2004. I have devoted much of my life to philanthropic work and through my foundation I’ve given away millions to worthy causes including $2.3 million to Children’s Hospital Los angeles. I wrote my best-selling autobiography, The Ragman’s Son then showed a gift for fiction writing, producing works such as Dance with the Devil and The Gift. I’ve lived a long life and I celebrated my 100th birthday in December 2016. My signature movie role was as a Roman slave in Spartacus!

Snapshot competition!
The lucky winner of our weekend break for two to a mystery location is Elaine Docherty from Blantyre who sent a montage of fun and evocative photographs from her GLENTON holiday to Great Yarmouth. Elaine says, “We had a wonderful holiday! The clown and “Beach Patrol” show what a fun place Great Yarmouth is for a seaside break. We loved the excursion to Cromer, with its narrow streets and colourful bunting and to Sheringham where a steam train leaves from the old fashioned platform. My favourite was our cruise aboard a Mississippi-style paddle steamer on the Norfolk Broads where I snapped a photo of a beautiful floating house.”

KINGSTON UpON HUll:
UK CITy OF CUlTURE 2017 If you always thought Hull was just the town where you catch the ferry to the continent, then think again! Hull, best known as the home of poet Philip Larkin, has beaten Leicester, Dundee and Swansea Bay to be named European City of Culture 2017. This sought after award is bestowed upon a metropolis that has demonstrated a belief in the power of culture. Hull’s bid centred around the theme ‘a city coming out of the shadows’. To deliver on this achievement, an impressive theatre and arts programme will operate throughout the year reflecting the unique character, history and geography of Hull with themed music, paintings, food and poetry. Aside from the special celebratory events, Hull boasts a wealth of things to do – here’s a selection of the city’s attractions. Streetlife Museum of Transport Rated Hull’s top attraction by TripAdvisor, visitors journey back through 200 years of transport history with exhibits such as a Hobby Horse bicycle dating from 1818 and they can soak up the atmosphere as they stroll through the recreation of a 1930s street scene. Humber Bridge The bridge that spans the river was officially opened in 1981 and at one time held the record for the longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge has a walk way so you can enjoy a stroll as you marvel at this feat of engineering.
22
philip larkin Trail The poet described Hull as “… a city that is in the world yet sufficiently on the edge of it to have a different resonance.” Perhaps follow in Larkin’s footsteps through the heart of the city to the Hull History Centre. Old Town Don’t miss Hull’s Old Town where points of interest include the house where William Wilberforce was born in 1759, located on the original High Street and flanked by Georgian townhouses and the ancient Ye Olde Black Boy - formerly a pipe shop, now a pub. The deep This gargantuan aquarium is home to everything from turtles to Nemo clownfish and manta rays. There are even shark dives on offer, though only for the brave (or mad!). Seven Seas Fish Trail This fun two-mile walking tour takes in fortyone wittily located pieces of fishy sculpture

BATTlEFIEldS OF THE GREAT WAR CENTENARy COMMEMORATIONS
By Contracts Manger Ann McDonald & Michelle Kane from GLENTON’S Operations Team Our tribute-paying battlefields tours present a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our soldiers in the Great War. As part of the GLENTON team, we feel it’s important to experience a destination first hand so we can advise our valued customers. We joined another 150 tour operators and travelled to ypres in Belgium. Here’s how we got on... Flanders Fields museum Located in historic Cloth Hall, this interactive museum tells the story of the invasion of Belgium in 1914 that led to four years of horrific trench warfare. It is easy to get around, displays the armistice and shows the different ways in which the war has been commemorated over the last century. Reception at Cloth Hall Having toured the museum, we were guests at a reception within the medieval “Lakenhallen”. In the Middle Ages, this building was the centre of the cloth trade in the thriving town of Ypres. Its splendour was devastated during the early months of the First World War after being bombarded by shells. However, it was lovingly reconstructed during the post-War years.
24
Hill 60 This atmospheric location is only about a ten minute coach journey from the main square in Ypres. Here we stopped at a World War One bunker then explored the frontline – it was incredible to see how physically close the opposing armies were to each other in those brutal days of conflict. A wooden walkway has been installed to make getting about easier although there were some undulating, grassy areas to negotiate. Walk from Cloth Hall to Menin Gate We walked to the Menin gate via the Market Square admiring the beauty of the post-War reconstruction of Ypres - the grand buildings bearing witness to the fortitude of the Flemish people. last post ceremony & laying of wreaths Every night at 8pm the Menin Road is closed to traffic and local volunteer firemen arrive to play “The Last Post” to honour the missing and all those who died during the 19141918 war. The Menin Gate is a memorial to more than 54,000 soldiers of Commonwealth countries who have no known grave. We will never forget the experience of witnessing this moving ceremony.
FREEPHONE 08000 24 24 24 or book online: www.glentonholidays.com | www.glentonpalmer.com
Visit to the lochnagar Mine Crater at la Boiselle We called at Lochnagar Crater on the Western Front - the largest mine crater created during the First World War and the only crater accessible to visitors. Our coach also stopped at Thiepval Memorial, the monument to missing soldiers which currently has over 72,000 names inscribed. Whenever remains are found and the soldier is identified, the inscription is updated.
ComingWorldRememberMe project We joined a clay workshop at the ComingWorldRememberMe project where the four main goals are remembering, helping, reflecting and connecting. This ongoing venture involves thousands of people spread over Flanders and the rest of the world moulding 600,000 sculptures out of clay – each sculpture representing the dog tag of the 600,000 victims who lost their lives during the First World War in Belgium. Here we moulded the clay into a sculpture as we reflected on the sacrifices made by the fallen...lest we forget.
Perhaps you’d like to join our Will ye Come to Flanders tour, departing on 17 August 2017 – maybe take the opportunity to make one of the 600,000 clay sculptures?
WILL YE COME TO FLANDERS? Our Flanders tribute is based in the heart of historic Ypres. We observe the moving memorial service at the Scottish monument in Zonnebeke, experience themed events and spend time at the Passchendaele Museum. Includes dinner, entertainment and breakfast on board the overnight ferries.
Holiday Highlights Frezenberg & Zonnebeke We spend a couple of days at Frezenberg and Zonnebeke where we witness the touching memorial service at the Scottish monument, marking the site where heavy fighting took place between Scottish and German troops in 1917. Many themed free of charge activities will be hosted around the memorial to mark the one hundred year anniversary. Zonnebeke is home to the famous Passchendael Museum that vividly tells the story of the First World War. ypres Enjoy free time exploring Ypres at your own pace. Landmark attractions within a few minutes of your hotel include St Martin’s Church, Ypres Cloth Hall, the Grote Markt and the poignant Menin Gate where the Last Post is played every night.
novotel Ieper Centrum – ypres This contemporary hotel is located right in the heart of historic Ypres just a few minute’s walk from the iconic Menin Gate where the last post is played every evening. There is a spacious public lounge, stylish bar and a restaurant with terrace.

MAlTA REMEMBERS By Audrey Connor
Last November I returned to my favourite holiday hotspot of Malta – but not just for the sunshine. This visit had a touching significance. As my “other half”, Malcolm, is an ex-Marine who was once stationed on this island, we met up with some of his former comrades along with locals to honour Remembrance Day at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The ceremony took place at the Saluting
Battery in Upper Barraca Gardens, located above the bastions overlooking stunning Grand Harbour within the walled city of Valletta. Here, against the peaceful backdrop of the sparkling Mediterranean, we joined others to commemorate the armistice signed by the Allies and Germany in Compiegne, France which led to the end of World War One. Malta played a significant role in both World Wars. In WWI, the island earned the nickname of “Nurses of the Mediterranean” as it became a hospital island for more than 136,000 soldiers. It was later recognised for the bravery of its people during the Second World War and the George Cross was bestowed upon the island. Indeed you can see this plaque of honour on the wall of the

Grand Master’s Palace in the heart of Valletta. As the poignant remembrance ceremony got underway, heads bowed beneath a pale blue sky and autumn sunshine, we listened to the prayers and The Last Post then took part in
the two minutes silence before the blast of gun fire and The Reveille. Afterwards, we meandered down to the jetty to catch the local ferry back across the water to Sliema, having paid our respects to the fallen.
THURSFORd CHRISTMAS SpECTACUlAR By Lisa Palmer Having visited the Thursford Christmas Spectacular for the first time, I wanted to tell you how truly spectacular it is along with some facts about it’s history and how far it has come since its inaugural event. It really is worth a visit. We started off at Santa’s Magical Journey - an indoor display of Yuletide scenes with twinkling lights and animations all moving in time to Christmas music. Then we took our seats in the elaborately decorated hall and watched spellbound as the magical show set the scene for Christmas with flamboyantly festive singing, dancing and laughter. Little wonder people return year after year! Continued over ...

FASCINATING FACT FIlE... • The first show was performed 40 years ago on the last Sunday before Christmas in 1977. • It was the dream of Director & Producer John Cushing to put on a concert to entertain the locals and it took place in a rural barn - the same barn as today, although it’s been modernised. However John Cushing remains the artistic Director to ensure the show changes every year. • It is the biggest Christmas Show in Britain, if not Europe. • There are two performances each day from mid November to 23 December. • Each performance seats 1400 people and all shows sell out.
• 50 coaches a day visit Thursford for the Spectacular. • Over 110 performers take part in the show which has everything from carol singing and dancing teddy bears to an unforgettable performance of Proud Mary! • The show costs more than £3 million a year to stage. • £250,000 a year is spent on costumes alone. • Thursford is home to the Cushing family collection of steam engines and during the Christmas Spectacular these are cleverly used to create Santa’s Magical Journey around the exhibits – this alone attracts an additional 13,000 children each year.
If you fancy experiencing Thursford Christmas Spectacular 2017 then call GLENTON PALMER on 01924 895849 – 3 Days from £249. Departures from England only. FREEPHONE 08000 24 24 24 or book online: www.glentonholidays.com | www.glentonpalmer.com
