Supko Elected Chamber Board Chairman As he stepped into the role of chairman of the board of directors of the Greater Latrobe-Laurel Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 1, Jerry Supko brings a wealth of experience and a never-ending commitment to the community. Supko, a Senior Vice-President at Commercial Bank and Trust of Pa., succeeds Saint Vincent College Director of Public Relations Don Orlando, whose second of back-to-back one-year terms were completed on Dec. 31. “It’s an honor to be chosen to lead an organization that’s made such great strides over the last several years under the previous two board chairs, Don Orlando and Paul Puleo,” Supko said. “My plan is to continue working to expand our membership, maintain and grow our events and explore and research the possibility of adding events.”
Outgoing chairman Don Orlando shakes hands with incoming chairman Jerry Supko.
Supko sits on the Board of Directors and is incoming president of the Latrobe Rotary Club. He’s the president of the Board of Directors at Blackburn Center. He’s also the chairman of the board of the Adelphoi Education Board and board member of Adelphoi USA. “I’m very pleased that Jerry has accepted responsibility for next year,” Orlando, who will become the immediate past chairman and continue as a member of the board and its executive committee, said. “His presence in the community will serve him and the chamber very, very well.” The GLLV Board of Directors is made up of 15 area members of the business community: Supko,vice-chairman Andrea Cuda (Ramada Ligonier); treasurer

Maryann White Helfferich (Kelly Sparber, White and Associates, LLC); secretary Madalyn Kalning (Gutchess Hardwoods); Melissa Blystone (Valley Dairy Restaurants); Brian Edmiston (TSI Titanium); Mike McDoniel (Pace-Airo Division); Eric Huttenlocher (Carpenter Latrobe Specialty Metals); Brian Maglosky (Kennametal Inc.); Jeff Minkovich (Community Options); Gary Siegel (Latrobe Bulletin); Mary Ann Singley (Excela Health); Judy Swigart (Greater Latrobe School District); Cheryl Walters (Derry Area School District); and Todd Weimer (Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center). Orlando has been a long-time member of the GLLV board and has gained a great deal of respect, not only from his colleagues on this board, but from chamber boards throughout the area. “I’ve always enjoyed being involved in the GLLV chamber,” Orlando said. “It’s been an excellent way for Saint Vincent College to participate in the life of the community. It’s been a very pleasant and productive experience for me to represent Saint Vincent.” “While our staffing is relatively small, changes that have taken place had to be addressed and we’ve done that,” he continued. “We’re stronger than we’ve ever been and our membership is indicative of that. I’m proud of our organization and it’s exciting looking forward.”

Supko is aware of the challenges that might lie ahead for the chamber, but accepts those challenges. “Five years ago, we weren’t sure what was going to happen with the chamber,” Supko, a native of Homer City who claims Latrobe as his adopted home, said. “Whatever success we have depends largely on our corps of volunteers and we’re very grateful to them.”

Latrobe Themed Gifts One of the questions often asked since the chamber opened its Visitor and Information Center in Sharky’s Plaza in 2015 concerned the availability of logo-ed merchandise for Latrobe. Visitors said they had been to several places in the area and had not been able to find much, if anything. Problem solved. The GLLV Chamber has debuted a sharp collection of Latrobe-logoed merchandise available at the Visitor and Information Center that show off Latrobe pride for residents, visitors and those who grew up in the area and have moved away. Included in that collection are magnets ($1); shot glasses ($5); 14-oz. coffee mugs ($8) in either satin black or orange; rocks glasses ($8 per glass or $15 per pair) and T-shirts ($15). The T-shirts are available in sizes small, medium, large, extra large and 2XL. Colors are gray and black. The logo pays tribute to aspects of the city that have made it famous, including the first airmail drop, Arnold Palmer, the birthplace of professional football, the birthplace of Fred Rogers and the home of the banana split, which was first made in Latrobe. George Fetkovich, the Art Director at Saint Vincent College, created the logo and was very mindful of what he was dealing with. “The idea was to focus on the rich history of Latrobe,” he said, “I thought the items in the logo were significant and iconic and we were able to get them in this circular design.” In addition to paying tribute to the history, the logo merchandise has a wonderful practical application as well. “These are something that residents, visitors and people who are no longer in the area would appreciate,” Fetkovich said. “And the key was we have enough people visiting the Visitor and Information Center looking for things like this.”
