With Latrobe being the birthplace of Arnold Palmer, there’s a rich golf history in the area as well. There are historic sites for history buffs, art centers, performing arts venues and worldfamous architecture in the area. You will find excellent transportation access via major highways, AmTRAK and the fast growing Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, and top-notch healthcare provided by the Excela Health network. A
t the writing of this introduction, Latrobe will be celebrating its 162nd birthday. Founded in 1854 by Oliver W. Barnes, an engineer with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and named for his friend and college roommate, Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the city and the surrounding area have a rich history and a colorful variety of native sons and daughters. Most notably, it is the birthplace of David “Doc” Strickler, inventor of the banana split, the first all-professional football team, the first non-stop airmail pick-up, children’s television pioneer Fred Rogers, and golf legend Arnold Palmer. Latrobe is the original home of the Latrobe Brewery (the brewer of Rolling Rock beer), Saint Vincent College, and training camp of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Nestled in the beautiful, rolling foothills of the Laurel Mountains in western Pennsylvania, the Latrobe Area was originally a hunting ground for Native Americans, including the Delaware, Shawnee, Seneca, and Mingo. The first European to give a detailed description of the region was Christopher Gist, an accomplished colonial British explorer and frontiersman. According to Gist’s journal, he came over the scenic Chestnut Ridge into “Loyalhannan” (present day Ligonier) and followed the waters into the area known today as Latrobe. He wrote, “It is good land for farming, covered with large white and red oaks and fine runs for mills.” Three years later, Gist would accompany a young George Washington on a road-building expedition across the area. The French and Indian War brought more Europeans over the mountains from the east. In 1758, British General John Forbes ordered construction of a new road across Pennsylvania, guarded by a chain of fortifications, the final link being the “Post at Loyalhannan” or Fort Ligonier. Forbes and his army of 8,000 British soldiers cleared a road through this area on their way from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. The path they created is now called Forbes Road. The village of nearby Youngstown, Pennsylvania, was established 50 years before Latrobe started and was a post-town, or stopping place, along the historic Forbes Road. Because it was at the foot of the mountains, Youngstown was a convenient place for pack horses, wagons, and stagecoaches to stop before ascending or after descending Chestnut Ridge. Some travelers decided to stay in the

area because they found good land for farming here. But, Western Pennsylvania was hostile country then. For at least twenty-five years, European settlers suffered attacks from Native Americans. To protect themselves, early farmers built blockhouses or log homes made of heavy timbers for military defense. The upper floor walls were “loopholed” or pierced for gunfire. One such structure was recently discovered near Saint Vincent College by Floyd Eiseman of the Latrobe Area Historical Society. The blockhouse, believed to have belonged to county lieutenant Archibald Lochry, was fully restored by students from Derry Area High School. In 1790, Father Theodore Brouwers, a member of the Orders of Friars Minor, purchased 300 acres of land in the Latrobe area called “Sportsman’s Hall Tract” and founded Sportsman’s Hall Parish. The parish was later placed under the patronage of Saint Vincent de Paul and called Saint Vincent parish. By 1846, Father Boniface Wimmer was installed as pastor and established the first Benedictine college in the United States. The Saint Vincent Archabbey and College was founded from modest beginnings, but grew rapidly, and on April 18, 1870, the State Legislature of Pennsylvania incorporated the school, empowering it to grant and confer degrees in the arts and sciences. Not long after Saint Vincent was founded, the Pennsylvania Railroad mainline from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh was being surveyed. Oliver W. Barnes, one of their engineers, was planning to build an extensive rail yard in the Loyalhanna Creek Valley just west of the Chestnut Ridge at the site of present-day Latrobe. Instead, he built the rail yards four miles northeast at what he called Derry Station. At the original location Barnes made plans for a town which he named Latrobe in honor of his friend Benjamin Latrobe, the B & O Railroad’s Chief Engineer. In about 1870, immigrant laborers began digging for coal in mines under many parts of the community. Many miners and their families moved near the coal mines to small villages called “patches.” Coal from local mines was used to heat homes and businesses and to make steam engines run. Coal was also baked to make coke in bee-hive ovens. Steel mills

in Latrobe and Pittsburgh burned the coke with iron ore to make steel. The geographic and natural features of the area made it ideal for the production of steel. Between 1880 and 1900, Latrobe grew at a dramatic rate. Owing most of the population growth to the expansion of industry, the borough continued adding more and more areas of Derry and Unity Townships. Immigrants arrived from around the world; especially European immigrants: Irish, German, Italian, Polish and Slovak. Major employers were the coal mine companies and the first steel mill. About 1908, the public schools became increasingly overcrowded and it was necessary to build additional schools. The First Ward School was constructed in 1909, followed by a new high school dedicated on September 24, 1914. The Latrobe Area Hospital was built in 1909 to serve the growing community and a public library was established in 1927. During both World Wars, the people living in the Latrobe district were first in the line of duty when called to serve. Many of the young men enlisted and left home, while a large number of others were registered under special inductions by the Selective Service Board located at Latrobe. On the home front, The Red Cross played an important part, providing comfort and service to the men overseas, and Latrobe businesses and its citizens supported the troops in a variety of ways that would make any community proud. Following victory in both wars, joyful crowds lined the streets to welcome home returning soldiers with cheers as confetti and church bells proclaimed the good news. With downtown businesses thriving, the 1950s are fondly recalled as the “Golden Years” in Latrobe. The decade saw the community recognized by the National Football League as the birthplace of professional football, the grand spectacle of a weeklong Centennial Celebration in 1954, and local legends Fred Rogers and Arnold Palmer beginning careers that would soon bring national attention to their home town; Rogers for his pioneering work in children’s television and Palmer for his record-breaking achievements in professional golf. By 1960, Latrobe had reached its peak in population growth and industry. Over the next several decades, like so many other cities in the country, downtown shopping districts gave way to suburban shopping centers and family-owned shops were overtaken by large national chains. Many Latrobe residents, however, remained determined to preserve the economic and cultural vitality of downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. Thanks to their efforts and community-driven programs like the Latrobe Community Gardens Project and the Latrobe Community Revitalization Program, the city is once again moving forward, encouraging new business, promoting tourism, and making the streets clean and green in appearance. Latrobe’s notoriety today comes from being a region of modern industry, recreation, and expanding technology. It is a special place known for its close neighborhood feel and the quality of its people: intriguing characters and everyday citizens who have made Latrobe’s history legendary. Incorporated as a borough in 1854 and then as a city in 1999, Latrobe has many claims to fame. Among those are being the home to “The King,” golf legend Arnold Palmer. DE R RY B OROU G H Derry Borough is nestled along the foothills of the Laurel Mountains and alongside Chestnut Ridge. Known originally as Derry Station, Derry was founded in 1852 to serve the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was named after the village on PA Route 982 now known as New Derry. Derry was incorporated as a borough in 1881 and served as a terminal for Pittsburgh commuter trains until 1964. The annual Railroad Days Festival serves to remind residents of Derry’s historic railroading heritage. Derry and Latrobe were actually linked at one time by the Westmoreland County Railway Company which was a long-distance trolley that operated from 1904 to 1932.

NEW ALEXANDRIA The rich history of New Alexandria goes back more than 200 years and was at one time a hub for many travelers. Once the home of its own airport and train station, New Alexandria, which encompasses 512 acres, was also the home of nationally acclaimed writer Agnes Turnbull, who over six decades published popular novels, stories and books for children. The New Alexandria Airport eventually became Keystone Raceway, where in the 1980s Evel Knievel appeared, and is now known as the popular Pittsburgh Raceway Park. DE R RY TOW N SH I P Derry Township surrounds the Borough of Derry, and is a separate municipality. It was named after the city of Derry by Scottish and Irish settlers. It is the home to the family favorite Keystone State Park, which was established in 1945 and the historic Samuel Patterson House, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. UNITY TOWNSHIP Unity Township was incorporated in 1789 and initial records show the settlement going all the way back to 1760. Residents of Mount Pleasant Township petitioned the court to establish a new township around the area next to the Loyalhanna creek. One of the oldest communities in the township was Youngstown, an important stop in the wagon and stagecoach era, ca. 1818-1852, which became a separate borough in 1831. Unity Township is home to the historic Kingston House, built as a stagecoach stop in 1815 and now the home of the Lincoln Highway Experience and also the Saint Vincent Archabbey Gristmill. Originally built in 1854, the mill was operated by steam and remains in use. It was built as part of Saint Vincent Archabbey and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

YOUNGSTOWN The famed “Tin Lizzy” Tap Room on 259 Main Street was once known as “Dalton’s Hotel”. A carved stone in the facade states “1905”, while another source dates the building to 1895.
Youngstown Borough was incorporated in 1831 and was named after Alexander Young, whose first lot was recorded in 1815. There was early debate over the name of the town and whether it should be called Martinsburg or Youngstown. The name Youngstown was settled upon after it was found that a town called Martinsburg already existed in Pennsylvania. Next to Youngstown is Solomon’s Temple Ridge and Sugarbush Ridge, sometimes known collectively as Youngstown Ridge. LIGONIER TOWNSHIP Ligonier Township was created in 1822. The eastern and western boundaries are located between the summits of Laurel Ridge and Chestnut Ridge, and north and south between the small community of Hilltop on State Route 711 North and Barkley Crossroads, situated on Route 711 South toward Stahlstown. The township contains the communities of Buttermilk Falls, Darlington, Hillsview, Laughlintown, Longbridge, McCance, Oak Grove, Shirley, Speedwell, Rector, Waterford and Wilpen.

here are a number of ways for members, new and old, to become involved in the many activities of the Chamber. ECONOMIC EDUCATION Economics and education are areas of emphasis for this Chamber and when combined under the banner of Economic Education form a powerful tool for both students and businesses. Committee volunteers conduct business and education programs in the Greater Latrobe and Derry Area School Districts. The Days of Economic Understanding are designed for sixth, eighth and 10th graders, while the Economic Exchange Day allows senior high school students to work through real-world situations. DIRECTIONS This program has been in existence for 20 years, going strong and getting bigger. Directions (below) is an interactive educational
experience between business and industry leaders and students in the Derry Area and Greater Latrobe School Districts. Directions is not four-year college focused and provides eighth and ninth graders lots to think about as they begin the planning of their future. INTERVIEW WORKSHOPS & CAREER DAYS Students often find the interview process a harrowing experience and thanks to a partnership of the GLLV’s Economic Education Committee and the Greater Latrobe, Derry Area High Schools and Eastern Westmoreland Career Technology Center, help is provided. Chamber business leaders interview students for 5-10 minutes, one-onone, simulating how things might be in a real-world interview. Each interviewer fills out a review of the interview and the student finds out how they did.
GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS An important aspect of chamber business on a daily basis is monitoring legislative and regulatory activity that could possibly impact area businesses. Members also have the opportunity to communicate the Chamber’s views to local public officials. INDUSTRIAL CONSORTIUM This consortium provides valuable information to two groups. Students learn that manufacturing careers that provide family sustaining incomes are available in the area and will be for many years to come. The other group is comprised of parents, school teachers and administrators. Their involvement in showing the students the opportunities available in the manufacturing sector and the importance of it for the community in general. BE ON DISPLAY As a GLLV member, you’ll be able to display your business promotional material at The Neighborhood Visitor & Information Center on Route 30 in Sharky’s Plaza. As many as 25,000 people visit the VIC each year, providing great visibility for your business. KEEP UP-TO-DATE Members get a subscription to the seasonal Chamber Xchange newsletter and to the weekly Xchange email update. The latter contains member news and highlights, local business news and other items impacting members’ bottom lines.

Claims To Fame
Being parochial about where you live is very natural and this part of Western Pennsylvania is no different. Among the Greater Latrobe area’s claims to fame include: • Fred Rogers, the Latrobe resident who earned international acclaim for the children’s series, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” was born, raised and educated here. He was a pioneer of educational television and his life and accomplishments are celebrated at the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media on the campus of Saint Vincent College. • Throughout his career, every time Arnold Palmer was introduced on the first tee of a golf tournament, that introduction always started with, “From Latrobe, Pennsylvania…” His accomplishments on the golf course are legendary and all of those had their beginnings at Latrobe Country Club. Palmer became a star on many courses throughout the area before he took the PGA Tour by storm. But he also became a force in his hometown as well, taking part in many projects and charitable endeavors to help citizens in the community he loves so much. • Rolling Rock Beer was brewed in Latrobe from 1939 until it was purchased by Anheuser-Busch in 2006. • In 1895, a gentleman named John Brallier earned $10 and expenses to play on the Latrobe YMCA team in a football game against the Jeannette Athletic Club. At one time, Brallier’s participation made him the NFL’s designation as the first professional football player. Latrobe is still designated as the home of the first all-professional/paid team that was formed in 1897. • Just after the turn of the 20th century, a young pharmacist at Tassel Pharmacy (later to become Strickler’s Drug Store), David Strickler, invented the banana split in Latrobe. The city was given national recognition and the designation of the birthplace of this popular treat. In 2015, the Great American Banana Split Celebration was held in Latrobe, on the 111th anniversary of the dessert. • The Pittsburgh Steelers have been coming to Saint Vincent College for training camp since 1966 and last year’s encampment was celebrated in a big way throughout the area. The event annually attracts national attention and fans of the team from all around the country schedule vacation time so they can spend some part of it in Latrobe. ATTRACTIONS & RECREATION The Greater Latrobe area has long been an attraction for travelers for a variety of reasons. The Laurel Highlands, Pittsburgh Steelers training camp at Saint Vincent College as well as historic sites throughout. In truth, there are plenty of reasons, general and specific for visitors to be awed by what they find here.
ART There aren’t many places in the country that can boast of having a school district that is the proud owner of a museum-quality art collection. But the Greater Latrobe School District can. Its collection, one of the largest in the country to be entirely selected and mostly purchased by students, is on display in the corridors of Greater Latrobe Senior High School. Located in downtown Latrobe, the Latrobe Art Center is a non-profit organization, one that helps foster creativity for artists young and old. Wonderful art is also on display at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Ligonier. 32

HISTORICAL SITES Looking to learn about our past? Fort Ligonier, Bushy Run Battlefield and Hanna’s Town provide great insight into how this area played a part in the development of the country. Interested in railroads and/or trains? The area has a pair of working depots: the Latrobe Train Station and the Greensburg Train Station, but in 1903 and 1911, respectively. And in addition to being functional, the stations are unique sites for visitors to learn about the part the region has played in the railroad industry.
ARCHITECTURE Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the iconic names in the world of architecture and two of his last houses are within an hour’s drive of Latrobe. Fallingwater and the Hagan House at Kentuck Knob are accessible to the public and are must-sees for afficianados. PERFORMING ARTS High quality, entertaining shows are held year-round at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg, the Ligonier Theater (home of the Valley Players), the Mountain Playhouse, which is housed in a 200-year-old gristmill in Jennerstown and the Saint Vincent College Summer Theatre, which presents shows from late May to midAugust.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS All visitors need to do is get one look at the fall foliage that lights up the mountain ridges around the Laurel Highlands and they get an idea about what the area has to offer in terms of recreational activities. The list is long and varied including (but not limited to) things like hiking, biking, skiing (downhill and cross country), mountain biking, hunting, fishing and whitewater rafting. If your idea of hunting and fishing trends more to birdies and eagles, the Latrobe area has a wide variety of golf courses and opportunities. And would you expect anything less from the birthplace of the most popular golfer in the history of the game, Arnold Palmer? And there are plenty of outdoor activities that exist in the region and have become eagerly-anticipated seasonal events. Things like the Latrobe Fourth of July celebration, the Westmoreland Agricultural Fair, Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival, Fort Ligonier Days, the Ligonier Highland Games, Steelers Training Camp at Saint Vincent, Overly’s Country Christmas and the Great American Banana Celebration Festival, which celebrates the birthplace of the popular dessert in Latrobe. There are few more kid-friendly amusement parks in the world than Idlewild and SoakZone in Ligonier.
