WESTMORELAND MECHANICAL TESTING AND RESEARCH CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY Look up the particulars of Westmoreland Mechanical Testing & Research, Inc. and you’ll find no mention of a sales force. And there’s a good reason for that. Because there is none. And why is that? Well, when you’ve become the largest independent test laboratory in the world there really isn’t much need to go knocking on doors. Incoming telephone calls and emails, fueled by sustained, top-notch work that has made WMTR the leader in the industry.
Manager and Vice-President. “Every time the UPS truck comes it’s like Christmas Day.” It never gets boring at WMTR, according to Rossi. Their research and testing cover a wide variety of industries. Some are quick tests, like the time a customer once drove to the facility with something to be tested and waited as the folks there ran the necessary tests. Other test and research projects can extend over a period of years. WMTR has worked with the automotive, fastener, space and aerospace industries, including work for SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company. They’ve tested medical equipment like hip joints and do a lot of R&D work. “At one point we did a lot of work on the Space Shuttle,” Rossi said. The company got its origins in 1967 when Donald Rossi, the patriarch of the family, founded it in a building across Route 30 from the Hi-Way Drive-In in Latrobe. “He started it based on needs determined at the time during the Vietnam War in the 60s,” his son said. “He was originally from Pittsburgh, worked for Westinghouse, left there and was hired by Latrobe Steel in their testing area.”

He had a great understanding and expertise in that area and because of the significant demand for materials in aviation, Latrobe Steel could produce them, but couldn’t get it tested fast enough.

WMTR is a member of the Greater Latrobe-Laurel Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce and is very involved in the community. “We’re involved with many regional Vo-Tech facilities,” Rossi said. “We offer paid internships to students locally; bring them in and let them see how things work. We work with Penn State heavily, but also are involved with Pitt, West Virginia and CMU. PSU has worked out very well and we bring in about 25 students in engineering and help educate them. We average about 15 interns per year.” Don, a long-time member of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority, is joined by Michael and his brother, Jim, the Vice-President of Technology, as the company management team.
