GLLV 70th Annual Dinner & Awards President’s speech addresses Kennametal HQ move

The Greater LatrobeLaurel Valley Community Chamber of Commerce celebrated the 70th year of its annual Dinner & Awards Celebration Monday night. The event was held in front of more than 250 GLLV partners in the Fred Rogers Center on the campus of Saint Vincent College. Those receiving awards were Joe “Ice Cream Joe” Greubel, 2015 Community Service Award; Mastrorocco’s Market in Derry as Small Business of the Year; Latrobe Community Revitalization Program as Nonprofit of the Year; Jerry Supko as Volunteer of the Year; and Missy Stahl as GLLV Ambassador of the Year. GLLV President David Martin addressed the attendees, previewing the

changes that will take place within the chamber in 2016 and, more importantly, made remarks about what he described as the white elephant in the room. Kennametal’s decision to relocate their corporate headquarters to Pittsburgh has created a great deal of reaction, mostly negative, and Martin took the opportunity to address the situation from a positive perspective. “Kennametal has sat on the chamber board for many years”, Martin said. “I am happy to announce that Kevin Nowe – Kennametal Vice-President, Secretary & General Counsel will be joining the GLLV board. They will continue to support our educational programs and want to see their remaining staff continue to volunteer and engage with the community.

Most of these folks are local people... They are our neighbors. And, we don’t want to see the initial 450 employees – who will remain in the Latrobe campus - feel demonized due to a corporate decision and the public reactions to it.“ Martin went on to pledge “to maintain the positive relationship Kennametal has had with this Chamber for decades.” “Any moves will be done in phases and it is their goal to lease available space as it becomes available,” he said. “I would rather be a partner in that process than an adversary. I would rather meet and build cooperation with an open hand than a clenched fist. We can survive this together.” Martin received a standing ovation at the conclusion of his remarks. Martin also told the audience Brian Edminston from TSI Titanium in Derry will chair a new government affairs committee and Gabe Monzo, executive director of Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, will return to the chamber’s board of directors. The GLLV will also introduce a new transportation committee; a new membership committee and new levels of membership will be availGLLV President David Martin with 2015 Community Service Award able, including a Visitor recipient “Ice Cream Joe Greubel, Small Business-of-the-Year recipient Vince Mastrorocco and Chamber Board Chairman Paul Puleo.
