Chamber Announces New Board Members By Mike Dudurich
The second anniversary of the rebirth of the Greater LatrobeLaurel Valley Community Chamber of Commerce is on the horizon and, as has been the case each step of the way, change continues to be the byword. There was a change in the physical location for the GLLV office, from an obscure location in Latrobe to a prime spot along Route 30. There was a name change, a logo change, a change in attitude, a change in staff and a change in commitment to the chamber’s increased footprint.
And now, for the first time, there will be a change in the makeup of the board of the directors. The 21-person board is a volunteer organization, made up of leaders from business, industry and education, who have great interest and commitment to not only the city of Latrobe but to the region as well. Seven new directors will be seated as 2016 arrives: Bob Demangone, VicePresident at Arnold Palmer Enterprises, Inc.; Jerry Supko, Vice-President Community Relationship Officer at Commercial Bank & Trust of Pa.; Brian Edmiston, Safety Manager/Human Resources
at TSI Titanium, Kevin Nowe, Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel at Kennametal, Inc., Melissa Blystone, President of Valley Dairy, Gabe Monzo, Executive Director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority, Marshall Haines, President of Pace - Airo Division, Eric 2016 GLLV Board Chairman Don Orlando Huttenlocher, Manager (Saint Vincent College) and Vice Chair of Human Resources, Andrea Cuda (Ramada Ligonier). Check presentation to Blackburn Center By Mike Dudurich
It was a beautiful late September morning when 20 women gathered at Glengarry Golf Links for the Greater LatrobeLaurel Valley Community Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural Golf & Gab. Plenty of golf shots were hit, lots of gab and laughter was had and money was raised for a good cause. On the monthly Good Morning Latrobe radio show on WCNS 1480, GLLV president David Martin and director of membership Denise Martin presented Ann Emmerling, executive director of Blackburn Center, with a check for $500 from the golf event. “This is just wonderful and we are so grateful to those who participated and contributed to this,” Emmerling said. “This money will go directly into the services we provide for continuing support to people in the most need.” Blackburn Center, located in Greensburg, is an orga-

Visitor Center Celebrates One Year It was just a year ago that the GLLV Chamber of Commerce opened the doors of the Visitor & Information Center. The lights were turned on as a group of local dignitaries, politicians and board members came to Sharky’s Plaza to view the sparkling new facility for the first time. A great first impression was made on those first-night visitors and, in reality, the thousands of visitors who came through the door the first year. The VIC means many things to many people but most importantly it has played an
important role in Chamber President David Martin and his staff doing the work they have done for Chamber members. “I think the new office speaks highly of the revival of the Chamber itself,” Westmoreland County Commissioner Ted Kopas, one of the opening-night visitors, said. “It visually shows the unique assets of the region. It has a little bit of everything.” The Neighborhood Visitor & Information Center is open to the public Monday – Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am2pm.

Resources Manager, Gutchess Hardwoods, Inc. the secretary. Maryann White-Helfferich, partner at Kelly, Sparber, White & Associates will remain in her role as treasurer. Paul Puleo, First National Bank of PA, Senior VP & Corporate Sales Manager, chairman the past two years, will become the immediate past chairman. “It is my privilege to accept leadership of this organization at the most exciting point in its history,” said Orlando. “We want to continue the upswing this year, expanding our membership and make that membership even more valuable. We are very cognizant that we need to give back to our members and we’re going to do everything we can to give back to our members small and large.” The highest profile change was the move to the shiny new VIC in Sharky’s Plaza on Route 30. “One of the biggest changes we’ve seen from the GLLV Chamber over the last year and one that has had the greatest impact is the new Visitor and Information Center,” said Cuda. “It’s made the Chamber more visible in the community, it’s created a new level of value for members in that it offers an additional information outlet for our local businesses, and of
course it serves as a welcome center to visitors in the area.” Kalning was effusive in her praise of what has been accomplished in the two years of the reborn chamber. “It has been phenomenal, a complete transformation,” she said. “I’m not taking anything away from what it was before, but I think the community has seen how it has been restored, how much more visible it has become. And the community has become involved.” That increased involvement has led to a rise in interest to be part of the board. “I was on the board for eight years previously,” Monzo said. “It’s a good time to be on this board now. As I was taught a long time ago, business breeds business and with how things are going in the area, we’re in the driver’s seat. This is an exciting time for our region and I’d be more than willing to help in whatever way I can. Being on this board gives us the ability to receive information about people’s needs regarding transportation.” Whirlwind, exciting, rejuvenating. All are words that have described the chamber’s rebirth. The new directors enter the board with enthusiasm and interest, that was obvious at a recent board meeting attended by both incoming and
outgoing members. Like everyone else, Puleo has enjoyed the ride from the chairman’s chair, but knows that it wasn’t all that long ago that things looked much different. “It’s been a very quick two years,” he said. “When I came on board, the first meeting I attended there was a vote to merge (with the Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce). The next thing you know we went back to being independent, we hired new staff and created new excitement and reasons to be a part of the Chamber. We turned the place upside down, everything changed. We woke up our chamber, reinvented it.” Sitting on recent accomplishments, however, isn’t an option. That’s why a strategic planning session for 2016 and beyond was held in November and the “new” board will hit the ground running when the calendar rolls over. “Having a functional Chamber of Commerce in general is extremely beneficial for local businesses,” said Demangone. “What has excited me is the idea of surrounding communities being on the same team, something that will be beneficial in the future for everyone.”

Joseph Horency, Greater Latrobe Program Coordinator for the Directions Program from The Advisors LLC, and David Martin, GLLV Chamber President.
It’s been a staple of the Greater Latrobe-Laurel Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee for over 20 years. That’s a long time for anything to last, but the Directions program, presented by Pace Industries - Airo Division, has not only lasted, it is flourishing. The purpose of Directions is to help students understand
that the decisions they make today have make a significant impact on future opportunities, including education, career and potential income. “It has morphed into a lot of things over the years. But it has kept its core and we try to adapt as much as we can but stay with the core,” said Tim Bates, head of the Chamber’s Economic Education
Committee and the Business Analyst for the Small Business Development Center at Saint Vincent College. The program is for Greater Latrobe ninth graders and Derry Area eighth graders. Area business and industry leaders make presentations about how they reached their positions, what sort of opportunities are available in the area, and get students thinking about the future. “The students have become more interested, they’re curious,” said Taylor Kilmer of the Education Committee and Marketing Specialist at Lesco Federal Credit Union. Four local business people – Dino DeCario of Dino’s Sports Lounge, Randy Redinger of Randy Redinger & Sons Auto Service, Chris Reddick of State Farm Insurance and Sarah Crispin-Thomas of State Farm Insurance, were interviewed and videotaped discussing the program. Directions is not a four-year
focused program, but is more future-focused. It has become a part of the curriculums at both schools and is welcomed in both places. “I think we have a good thing going in both districts,” Bates said. “For them to allow us to come in and be part of the learning process is great. We’ve had great volunteer participation through the years as well. We get a lot of repeat volunteers, too.” Kilmer seconded that. “We really couldn’t do this without our chamber friends and the community.” "This Chamber's commitment to career-focused programs for students in our local schools has been a long standing tradition," said GLLV president David Martin. "Directions is a special program. It gives local business leaders a chance to talk with area students and get them thinking about career options. We are very thankful for Pace Industries in Loyalhanna and TSI Titanium in Derry supporting the program again this year."
Golf Classic makes check presentation The 26th playing of the GLLV Chamber Golf Classic was the biggest and most successful in its history. The field was an early sellout at Latrobe Country Club and the day was a financial success, creating a sizable donation for the event’s beneficiary, the Greater Latrobe Partners in Education Foundation. That contribution was made official Feb. 5 during the Chamber's monthly radio show on WCNS. President David Martin presented a $7,500 check to Jessica Golden, Director of the GLPIEF Development Office and board member Dorothy Staffen, District Administrator for state senator Kim Ward. "The event was re-designed two years ago to support the chamber's long-running career-
focused educational programs in the Greater Latrobe and Derry Area School districts," said Martin. "Considering our relationship with the GLPIEF, it seemed natural to include them as a co-benefactor and help support their great mission." “The golf event is a fantastic and wonderful community
event and the partnership we have with the Chamber is very important, one we value very much,” Golden said. It was also announced that the 27th golf classic will be held July 15 at Latrobe Country Club and that Arnold Palmer will once again be the honorary chairman of the event. “Last year was the most
successful event since I’ve been connected with it,” said Jerry Supko, vice-president commercial relationships officer at Commercial Bank & Trust of PA and golf classic committee chairman. “We look forward to building on last year’s momentum as we prepare for this year.” Having Palmer as the honorary chairman adds to the status of the event, but the golf classic is big for him too, because it involves two things close to his heart: golf and education. “The success of the Greater Latrobe-Laurel Valley Golf Classic is very gratifying to me,” Palmer said. “Having the course at Latrobe Country Club filled with golfers contributing to the education of our children in our local school districts is a great thing.”

Blackburn Center presentation from front
“We thought the Golf & Gab would be a fun ladies event,” said Denise Martin, the chamber’s director of membership. “And when we were deciding on a non-profit, we just thought the Blackburn Center was a great one. The work they do and issues they deal with affect all of us in some way and we just felt strongly about supporting them.
