GLOBALONEMAG.COM - 3 - WINTER 2021
From The Publishers Desk 2020 was a hell of a year for most everyone. Between the COVID 19 pandemic, floods, storms, ice, snow, invasion of murder hornets, civil unrest, an out of the world election, and a congress who can’t seem to work together we still remain excited about our futures. Even though life is sometimes difficult things are looking really good for women. In this issue I’ll talk about lifestyles, travel destinations, foods, cuisine, drinks, culture, books, automotive, health, wellness, mrem, women, children, and culture. We also explore the use of marijuana by women. Yes, marijuana because weed has become a woman’s biggest fan. On the cannabis front, five states passed measures to legalize medical or adult use marijuana and more are soon to follow, plus what the Biden administration will mean for its federal legalization. Even Martha Stewart and the travel industry are joining in. There are dispensaries open up all over the place. There are places you can indulge by relaxing with a sip of THC infused Vinos in our feature of pairing marijuana and wine.

Friendship Friendships, I believe are a series of beautiful and not so beautiful journeys. Some journeys will be remembered forever, some you will want to forget and some you will want to share with others. Some are lessons to teach. Others are there to enjoy or share with your favorite people or even strangers. Some will create new paths that you must travel alone.

Corona Virus Update on Restaurants
These Dallas Restaurants Have Permanently Closed During the Coronavirus Pandemic We have tried our best to provide our readers with a solid list of establishments that have called it quits since restaurants were required to close their dining rooms. Since March, restaurant dining rooms across the city were required to close in an effort to stem the spread of the coronavirus. The industry is still struggling. While waiting for assistance from the federal government and a return to the new normal, some beloved establishments just couldn’t make it through. Global One is keeping track of the restaurant closures across the city during the coronavirus pandemic and will update this list if more closers happen. • Mille Lire - The Oak Lawn Italian restaurant closed in July. • Savor - The restaurant overlooking • Klyde Warren Park closed for good in August. • Mubrooka - The much-lauded Egyptian restaurant called it quits in late August. boasted 360-degree views of the Dallas skyline, and was a special occasions staple. Sushi Bayashi - This Trinity Groves sushi spot bowed out during the shutdown, and will be replaced with a different, as-yet-unnamed Japanese restaurant in the coming months. Highland Park Cafeteria - After 95 years of slinging comfort food, Highland Park Cafeteria announced in mid-May that it would close for good. “We would love to have a farewell event to honor you and our faithful employees, but due to the current restrictions, we won’t be able to,” the restaurant said in a statement. “HPC is not tables and chairs and stoves, it is generations of cooks faithfully preparing special recipes and lovingly serving generations of diners.” British Beverage Company - Closed in April. Don Arturo’s Cocina and Cantina - Closed in March. Mercy Wine Bar - Permanently closed; Mercy Bar and Lounge in Irving will remain open. Start - All locations of the healthy fast-food chain have shuttered. Dakota’s Steakhouse - Permanently closed after 36 years in Downtown Dallas. Chicken Scratch - Just weeks after Beto O’Rourke endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden at this West Dallas spot, CultureMap reports that it has shuttered permanently. Jake’s Burgers - The Henderson Avenue location of this longtime burger chain has closed, according to the Dallas Morning News. Ross & Hall Beer Garten - This Ross Ave drinking destination announced that it would permanently close its doors on May 17. “This business is a weird one but every now and again you come across a place that is almost an instant family and that’s what this was for us,” the bar’s owners wrote on Facebook. “All different walks of life could come together on the daily and create such a cool atmosphere that we are so deeply going miss.” Wa Kubota - This popular Plano Japanese restaurant announced on its website that its last day of service would be April 30. YaYa Best Tex-Mex Yogurt - Per a statement from owner Ralph Isenberg, this Bishop Arts yogurt shop closed on May 18.

it quits in April as coronavirus eliminated the crowds of people who would normally spend hours drinking al fresco. Lizard Lounge - A haven for goths, industrial music fans, and weirdos of all kinds, Deep Ellum lost a neighborhood fixture when Lizard Lounge announced that it would not return after bars were allowed to reopen. There is one ray of hope, though — owner Don Nedler said that he’s looking at finding a new home for the club. Cool River Cafe - Closed permanently, per CultureMap. Bird Cafe - Facing a steep decline in foot traffic in Fort Worth’s Sundance Square, restaurateur Shannon Wynne is set to close Bird Cafe on May 22. Fortunately, the restaurant was approved for a Payroll Protection Program loan from the Small Business Administration, which means that employees will be paid for “weeks” after the restaurant’s departure. Desert Racer - closed, will be replaced with a patio pop-up called Vantina. Off-Site Kitchen - closed, will not reopen at Trinity Groves. Perfect Union Pizza Company - closed; will be “reconcepted.” Ceviche Oyster Bar - Per a post to the restaurant’s Facebook page, closed permanently. The menu and staff has moved to a new spot called La Palapa de Sabor at 118 West Jefferson. Houston’s - According to CultureMap, the Addison location permanently closed its doors on June 13. Ikigai Udon - Announced on June 18 that it would close permanently due to the current “unusual economic situation.” Jake’s Burgers - According to Lakewood Advocate, the Henderson Avenue outpost of Jake’s closed due to issues with its landlord. Tacos Mariachi - Per the Dallas Morning News, the Greenville Avenue location of this popular taqueria shuttered for good. The original outpost on Singleton Ave will reopen.

African Culture

African American Influence on American Culture The contributions and cultural influences stemming from enslaved Africans have been greatly undermined in the American culture. Africanisms varying from traditional folklore, Southern cuisine to song and dance are not only prevalent in today’s society but have a widespread, deeprooted impact throughout the United States. During the Middle Passage, enslaved Africans were forced to abandon traditional customs, camouflage spiritual rituals, and perish cultural artifacts. But upon arrival into the New World, previous practices and wisdom were quickly adapted in order to survive and sustain within the realm of America. Unfortunately, Africans contributions to the economics, wealth, and culture of the U.S. since the beginning have been whitewashed or receive little to no credit, a tale all too familiar within American history. The expertise and benefactions of Africans are evidenced in various forms including but not limited to: Agriculture: Africans supplied the intense labor, skillfulness, and cultivation of the first rice seeds, successfully introducing and transmitting rice culture into the New World. Stemming back to the 1700s, rice was first introduced from Madagascar to the farming market of South Carolina. During this time, enslaved Africans used three indispensable systems: ground water, springs, and soil moisture reservation. Southern Cuisine: At the time of the trans-Atlantic voyage, black-eyed peas, okra, kidney, and lima beans were gathered and collected in Africa for enslaved Africans upon the voyage into the New World. Synonymous with soul food, traditional African dishes and techniques have been perpetuated in American food culture such as deep frying, gumbo, fufu and millet bread. Often prepared by enslaved Africans, cornbread was assimilated to the African millet bread and fufu, a GLOBALONEMAG.COM
traditional African meal similar to “turn meal and flour,” a popular dish associated with the state of South Carolina. Brer Rabbit Nursery Rhymes: Folklores such as Chicken Little, Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox, were derived from Africa. African stories, fables and oratory traditions have been embedded into American culture, providing a childhood infrastructure for learning and development through the use of nursery rhymes. Indigenous Song and Dance: Enslaved Africans were forced to substitute drums with hand clapping and feet tapping because slave “masters” banned drums in several African communities after learning they could be used as an obscure form of communication. As a result, rhythmic song and dance became a major component of the New World culture, that includes shuffles, jigs, breakdowns, and the strut accompanied by drum-less beats using their hands or feet. Two of the most notable music forms created by enslaved Africans are spirituals and the blues; both are generational blueprints within the religious melodies found in the African American communities. Those noted above are just the tip of the iceberg as there is an abundance of notable contributions made by enslaved Africans that are often duplicated but highly disregarded in the American culture. For instance, enslaved Africans are also responsible for establishing the augmentation of the dairy industry, artificial insemination of cows and the creation of various vaccines and cures including smallpox and poisonous snake bites. The African origins most influential staple is evidenced throughout modern popular culture where America has continuously capitalized in more ways than one through language, hair styles, clothing, and contemporary music.

Happy Habits / Happy Life

Your Serenity 10 Daily Habits For Inner Peace By Meerabelle Dey, Contributor and Attorney We all want serenity, that elusive state of calm that seems to belong solely to yoga instructors. People with serenity are better equipped to enjoy life. Their small problems remain small and don't become magnified into huge catastrophes. And when real crises arise, they react with steady, clear thinking. However, serenity isn't achieved without effort. We need good mental habits to have peaceful minds. So, here are some daily habits to get you on your path to serenity. 1. Give Thanks Continually. When your alarm goes off, before you even get out of bed, close your eyes, and think about the ways in which you've been blessed. Consider the most basic gifts that you have: a job, good relationships, your home, your clothing, your health. Then continue to give thanks throughout the day. If someone lets you in their lane when you are driving, give thanks. When your paycheck is deposited into your account, give thanks. When your child comes home from school safely, give thanks. Make a point of acknowledging every good thing that happens to you. 2. As Soon As Your Mind Wanders Get It Back on Course. We know when we are getting mentally off course. We get irritated over minor things. We decide it's our job to correct other people's bad behavior. We obsess over past slights. These are all symptoms of the mind going down a path toward wrong thinking. Like a car that has shifted into a lane with on-coming traffic, our minds also can shift into the wrong lane. As soon as that happens, stop what you are doing. Walk away from the person who isn't acting properly. Then do whatever it is that helps you get your mind back on track. For me, it's reading something spiritual. For others, it may be listening to inspiring music or talking to a good friend. By re-directing your mind, you can more easily return to clear thinking. 3. Practice Acceptance. Practicing acceptance doesn't mean that you allow yourself to be treated poorly by others. It means that you accept others for who they are. If someone is a jerk or manipulative, that is who they are. It's your choice whether or not to spend time with them but accept that you can't change them. Likewise, practicing acceptance doesn't mean that you don't try to improve your life. For instance, you may not like your current job or home. Accept your situation for what it is today. Do your best at your job and make your home as beautiful as possible. Appreciate that you have work and a place to live. Then do what you can each day to get your dream job or home in the future. Acceptance isn't stagnation. Acceptance is understanding what you can and cannot change. 4. Be Kind To Others. There is no scenario in which being unkind to others will benefit you. So be careful how you operate. The ugly things that you say and do to other people may affect them, but those actions will poison you. If you are unhappy, take a long, hard look at your behavior. If you spew mean comments or take advantage of people, you will be miserable. I can't sugarcoat that. Instead, be consistently kind. Build others up. Be helpful. You
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
will find that by doing those three things, you'll be at peace with yourself because you will actually like yourself. 5. Be Careful What You Drink. Some things we drink can affect our minds. Coffee, tea, and some soft drinks have caffeine. Caffeine affects each person differently. Evaluate how it affects you. If it makes you jumpy or irritable, then either reduce your consumption or eliminate it altogether. Alcohol affects people differently as well. If drinking wine, beer or hard liquor makes you anxious or depressed, again, limit your drinking or cut alcohol out of your life altogether. Being happy is more important than your Starbucks or a nightly glass of wine. 6. Get Enough Sleep. Our minds cannot think clearly if they aren't rested. Small children need copious amounts of sleep-in order to be happy. Adults are no different. While we may not throw ourselves on the floor and scream if we haven't had a nap, we function only slightly better without sleep. Develop good sleep habits. Go to bed early. There is nothing wrong with going to bed at 9 p.m. The television shows you are missing aren't nearly as important as your serenity. 7. Watch and Read the Right Kind of Books, Movies and Television. What we watch and read affects how we think. Choose your entertainment carefully. There is a lot of violent, pointless junk out there which is deemed to be "avantgarde" or "creative." If you want to have a relaxed mind, spend your time watching and reading things that have a positive message or that educate. Don't spend your valuable free time filling your mind with garbage just because it's popular. 8. Keep a Clean, Uncluttered Home. There is a reason why spas don't have dirty towels on the floors and shelves covered with knickknacks. You can't relax in a place that is messy. A cluttered home or room is a sign of a cluttered mind. Make your home a place that is tidy and beautiful. You should breathe a sigh of relief when you enter your home. It should be a refuge for both your mind and your senses. 9. Spend Parts of the Day without Noise. There is nothing wrong with television per se, but there is something wrong with the television being on all the time. People tend to turn on the television to avoid being uncomfortable. We are either uncomfortable with our families, or we are uncomfortable with ourselves. So, we distract ourselves from that discomfort with a lot of racket. The problem is that noise impedes you from truly relaxing. Make the choice to give your ears and mind a break and enjoy the silence. 10. Spend Time with the Right Kind of People. There are people who can't help but be a problem. Everywhere they go, they create drama. Someone has always done them wrong, or they are continually upset about something. Or they just can't say anything nice. Give those people wide berth. You can't necessarily eliminate those people from your life, but you can limit your contact with them. It is a matter of self-preservation. When you allow people into your life who bring chaos, it is very hard to maintain your serenity. It isn't your job to make their lives better. It is their job to not spread their brand of drama.

Creating a Life You Can Call Your Own The best way to break a bad habit is to drop it. It’s about 6:00 p.m. on Friday and you realize you just put in another fifty-hour workweek. You grab a bottle of wine on your way home, open the door and head straight for the couch. You grab the remote control in one hand and your junk mail in the other. While shuffling through the mail you suddenly notice a letter from him. You wonder what he's sent and why. After all you’ve dated for more than a year and you’ve never received a letter from him You tear the letter open and began to frantically read it. The words, “It’s over, I’ve found someone else,” causes your heart to skip a beat and your legs begin to feel like jelly. You tell yourself, “This couldn’t be true.” But it is. It feels like an explosion has went off in your brain, so it has to be true. You’ve never felt like this before. It’s not like him to tell you something of this magnitude in a letter. You’ve always been able to discuss problems or bad news face to face. You sit back down, and you realize the person you’ve invested all your time, energy, and emotions into has just ended your relationship. This was the relationship you hoped would last forever. After you think for a moment and try to get over the initial shock, you check your call notes to see if there are any messages telling you to disregard the letter. Surely there has to be something about reconsidering or at least something he said to soften the blow. But there’s nothing. You feel hurt, rejected and alone. Several weeks pass, and for some strange reason things aren’t getting any better and you don’t feel any better. In fact, you still feel emotionally torn, just like you did the day you got the letter. As you try to work through the pain, you reminisce about your relationship repeatedly. You begin to talk to yourself, and then you ask, “What happened?” “What did I do?” “Why didn’t I see it coming?” “Why did it have to happen this way?” Finally, the truth begins to emerge, and you realize why your relationship with this person fizzled: you simply did not have your own life. This person was your life. Your entire lifestyle was wrapped up in someone else. You see now that all the time you were dating, your life was on hold. Any free time you had was spent with him. Your career, interests, friends, and even your relationship with God was placed on hold. Now that your relationship has ended you have nothing to sustain you. Without your sweetheart you have no life. GLOBALONEMAG.COM

Sadly, I have witnessed far too many scenarios like this one. Thousands of people are trapped in their relationships that should have never begun in the first place. Thousands of women are in relationships where they are trying to get to know the man, before they know about themselves. They simply ignored the number one rule: Get a life! One of the most important things a person can learn from being dumped is -- you have to always maintain a separate life in your relationships. A real life so to speak! When you invest all of your energy and self-worth in trying to get and keep a mate or simply have a relationship where everything you do and say is in reference to the relationship - you don’t have a life. Before you met your mate, plenty was probably happening in your life. For most women it usually is. Once you got to know him better did, he became your biggest priority? Have you given up all the things you enjoyed doing because you’re doing so much for your mate? Do you find yourself waiting by the telephone? Has your life really become your partner's life? Once a person gets into a heavy relationship, they are not only consumed they also get caught up in their partner's agenda. You even forget your friends and family until you’re caught on the short end of the relationship and your partner decides to move on. This doesn’t have to happen to you. You can show your love and still have a life of your own while you do it. Before you go out again or say, “I do,” please follow these simple steps.
- 26 - WINTER 2021
They detail why you should keep your agenda as full as possible when a new person enters your life. 1. Become More Interesting. A person will become immediately attracted to you if you carry yourself in a more interesting way. Maintain a wide laugh and a deep smile. Anyone you’re interested in you will soon recognize after going out with you a few times whether your life is good or bad. If you only know things about the neighborhood you live in, he’ll know you’re not well versed in going to exciting places. If you eat at the little restaurant down the street all the time your date will think you lack skills in different foods or restaurants. If you appear to be boring or unknowing, he’ll try other things to remain excited, maybe even other dates. 2. Don’t Make Yourself Too Available. Most people love a challenge, even though they won’t admit it openly. When you aren’t so accessible it makes him want you more. When you receive a call to go on a date, be sure to let your date know that you’ll have to check your calendar. Mutter not so quietly... dinner with Carla, meeting with Bobbie, workout with Alberta, and drinks with Georgia. Be incredibly sweet all the while you're speaking to him. Remember, the trick is to always act as if you want to go out again, but you just don’t know when you can fit it in your schedule. We all want to believe that we matter. So being busy and still making your date feel needed is a great way not to appear anxious. It’s man's nature to desire those things and people who aren’t so available. It’s a turn on for him. If you hold back a little -- (a lot easier to do when you have a full life) he will immediately become more attracted to you. “Don’t just do your date, do other things too.” 3. Show Your Independence. Independence is great for romance. The busier you are, the better it is for the both of you. When you show your independence, you’re also able to show that you can really take care of yourself. No one wants to be involved with a whiner or insecure person, and you don't want to feel like you're at the bottom of his list. Don’t insist on filling up all his time - it’s a turn-off. Putting to many demands on his time will turn you into a nervous wreck and neither of you will feel god about being in the relationship. Having your own life makes you less resentful of his life. Besides, your independence won’t allow you to worry about the amount of time he spends with you. What a relief to know that you won’t make a big deal out of it. By taking a break each of you will respect the times that space is needed from one another. In a healthy relationship, it’s okay for a couple to have mutual needs that they can
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
fulfill together, but it’s always smart to have separate needs. Here’s a simple quiz designed to help you become more aware and recognize if you are headed for problems in the relationship. Circle your answer. 1. Do you often cancel previous plans because he said he would call you? Yes NO 2. Do you rush off the phone just because he’s supposed to call? Yes NO 3. Do you go on diets because he likes women more fit and trim than you? Yes NO 4. Do you avoid your friends because he says he doesn’t like them? Yes NO 5. Do you miss doing things with your friends because you’re missing out on doing something with him? Yes NO 6. Do you wear only the clothes that he says he likes to see you in? Yes NO 7. Do you spend the entire weekend at home just because he’s out of town? Yes NO 8. Do you get rid of your favorite pet just because he doesn’t like the way it looks? Yes NO 9. Does he decide he’s going to relocate to a better paying job in another state and when he asks you to come along you start packing right away and hope to find a job when you get there? Yes NO 10. Have you ever caught him having an affair and you blame the person you caught him with? Yes NO
If you feel that your answer should be yes to these questions, then you have unwisely placed yourself at your mate’s beck and call by having your life revolve around his life. Start making a change today! Begin self-appreciation by setting your own individual goals. Find out more about yourself and what you want out of life apart from your partner. Pursue your own interests. Don’t erode your self-esteem by giving your power away. Your partner may not even be asking you to do this, but when you think and do things only as a couple you are becoming the dependent party in the relationship. Your mate will value, respect, and appreciate you more if you continue to have a life… Your Own Life!

WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE YOU NEED positive vision of yourself,A butBREAK it can be difficult for those We all face stressful situations throughout our lives, ranging from minor annoyances like traffic jams to more serious worries, such as a loved one's grave illness. No matter what the cause, stress floods your body with hormones. Your heart pounds, your breathing speeds up, and your muscles tense. This so-called "stress response" is a normal reaction to threatening situations, homed in our prehistory to help us survive threats like an animal attack or a flood. Today, we rarely face these physical dangers, but challenging situations in daily life can set off the stress response. We can't avoid all sources of stress in our lives, nor would we want to. But we can develop healthier ways of responding to them. One way is to invoke the "relaxation response," through a technique first developed in the 1970s at Harvard Medical School by cardiologist Dr. Herbert Benson, editor of the Harvard Medical School Special Health Report Stress Management: Approaches for preventing and reducing stress. The relaxation response is the opposite of the stress response. It's a state of profound rest that can be elicited in many ways. With regular practice, you create a well of calm to dip into as the need arises. Here are six relaxation techniques that can help you evoke the relaxation response and reduce stress. 1. Breath focus. In this simple, powerful technique, you take long, slow, deep breaths (also known as abdominal or belly breathing). As you breathe, you gently disengage your mind from distracting thoughts and sensations. Breath focus can be especially helpful for people with eating disorders to help them focus on their bodies in a more positive way. However, this technique may not be appropriate for those with health problems that make breathing difficult, such as respiratory ailments or heart failure. 2. Body scan. This technique blends breath focus with progressive muscle relaxation. After a few minutes of deep breathing, you focus on one part of the body or group of muscles at a time and mentally releasing any physical tension you feel there. A body scan can help boost your awareness of the mind-body connection. If you have had a recent surgery that affects your body image or other difficulties with body image, this technique may be less helpful for you. 3. Guided imagery. For this technique, you conjure up soothing scenes, places, or experiences in your mind to help you relax and focus. You can find free apps and online recordings of calming scenes—just make sure to choose imagery you find soothing and that has personal significance. Guided imagery may help you reinforce a GLOBALONEMAG.COM
who have intrusive thoughts or find it hard to conjure up mental images. 4. Mindfulness meditation. This practice involves sitting comfortably, focusing on your breathing, and bringing your mind's attention to the present moment without drifting into concerns about the past or the future. This form of meditation has enjoyed increasing popularity in recent years. Research suggests it may be helpful for people with anxiety, depression, and pain. 5. Yoga, tai chi, and qigong. These three ancient arts combine rhythmic breathing with a series of postures or flowing movements. The physical aspects of these practices offer a mental focus that can help distract you from racing thoughts. They can also enhance your flexibility and balance. But if you are not normally active, have health problems, or a painful or disabling condition, these relaxation techniques might be too challenging. Check with your doctor before starting them. 6. Repetitive prayer. For this technique, you silently repeat a short prayer or phrase from a prayer while practicing breath focus. This method may be especially appealing if religion or spirituality is meaningful to you. Rather than choosing just one technique, experts recommend sampling several to see which one works best for you. Try to practice for at least 20 minutes a day, although even just a few minutes can help. But the longer and the more often you practice these relaxation techniques, the greater the benefits and the more you can reduce stress.

‘SHE’ POWER Self-love are a part of who you are, but you must get in tune with it each day in order for it to be the most beneficial. Your SHE principles are universal and will help you get in touch with your Inner Diva - those special parts of you that you’re saving for yourself. These simple pleasures will help you indulge, explore, and evolve. They are the essence of who you really are, and they transcend culture, time, age, and time. 1. Who is she? The power of a woman is the fact that she has an awareness of the obstacles in her way and the misogynistic expectations people have for her, but she decides for herself what she wants and works to achieve it. Furthermore, a strong woman is willing to find help or gain strength from supportive friends, family members, and mentors–despite the notion that women should be ‘independent’ and ‘do it all.'” 2. She bounces back. “A strong woman keeps going on like she has never been hurt, despite having been.” 3. She knows who she is. “A strong woman is self-aware. She continually tries to overcome her fears, she knows how to control herself, and she is patient no matter the situation. She isn’t afraid to reveal her feelings because we all have them, and she shows hers without caring what other people think.” 4. She is independent but knows when to ask for help. “Being a strong woman doesn’t mean you can’t ask for help. Hell, being a strong man doesn’t mean you can’t ask for help. Part of me PHOTO BY LUIS QUINTERO thinks that women feel they have to overcompensate because so many peg them as these fragile, helpless creatures, when many of the women I know are stronger (be it mentally, emotionally, or physically) than many of the men I know. Being a strong woman in my eyes means you’re someone who is realistic enough to know what you can do, is grounded enough to know when you need a hand and is confident enough to know you can ask for help without fear of being judged.” 5. She follows her own path. “A strong woman is someone who follows her own dreams rather than a man.” 6. She is unapologetic about who she is. “A strong woman works hard, she chases what she believes in, and she does it all for herself. No one else. She loves endlessly and shows appreciation to those around her. Most importantly, she isn’t selfish, and once she makes it, she reaches back to help others.” 7. She’s a fighter. “A strong woman is a woman who fights for rights she shouldn’t have to fight for.” 8. She’s perseverant. “A strong woman gets up every time she falls. She pushes forward, even when all odds are against her. She doesn’t let others influence her decisions. She’s resilient.” 9. She is balanced. “A strong woman knows when to be selfish and when to be selfless, when to follow her head and when to follow her heart. She has a good, stable head on her shoulders, and she knows when to play the hand she’s dealt and when to fold and hope the next one’s better.” 10. She doesn’t let others define her. “A strong woman is a busy, vibrant, and goal-orientated woman who doesn’t wait for a man to validate her existence.” 11. She is grounded in her faith. “A strong woman believes in whatever she believes in, and lets that faith guide her every step.” 12. She isn’t afraid to be true to her feelings. “A strong woman is someone who isn’t afraid to share her opinions and speak her truth. She listens, but she doesn’t allow other problems to bring her down. 13. She is filled with kindness, generosity, compassion, integrity, a willingness to be vulnerable, and authenticity. No matter what she is true to herself.” 14. She respects herself. “A strong woman doesn’t let the cattiness of other women bring her down. She has the utmost respect for herself and what she believes in.” 15. She is humble. “A strong woman is confident, yes. But I think the best way to describe a woman’s strength is a sense of ‘confident humility,’ paired with faith and passion. By ‘confident humility’ I just mean someone that isn’t so humble that she comes across as weak. Rather, someone that can stay confident without getting arrogant.” 16. She loves. “A strong woman loves inherently; from the time she is a little girl to the day she passes. She is always willing to take care of others. She loves and never stops loving.”

Positively Thick & Beautiful
Being Thick is ‘NOW’ A Beautiful Compliment for Women When the word thick is used to describe a woman’s size it is often considered an insult. It is also confusing to some people. You’d think they’re either making fun of a woman’s body shape or saying she’s not intelligent. But in actuality “thick” has a whole new and beautiful meaning. Body shaming has become such a (completely unacceptable) standard part of living life on the Internet that when we started seeing the word “thick” being thrown around with some of our favorite celebrities, I figured it was just another way of putting women down. So, we were shocked to learn that being called thick was, in fact, a compliment? What does thick mean? Based on our very unofficial research, it looks like the word has its roots in the word “phat” — a ’90s term for “pretty hot and tempting” or “excellent.” Fast forward 20 years and “phat” has found a new iteration in “thick,” but essentially, they mean almost the same thing. According to urbandictionary.com, “thick” means “nice ass, nice legs, not skinny, with meat on your bones, thickness is the stuff — and many thick women seem to agree. However, not everyone agrees that thick is a compliment, including Rihanna. The singer posted a meme on Instagram a few days after the BuzzFeed article was posted, with no caption, and just the single tear emoji. Of course, we’ll never know exactly what RiRi was thinking or how she feels, but if memes could talk, this one would probably say she’s not impressed. And then there’s the situation that unfolded a few years ago, when Ri’s ex-bf Drake mentioned “thick girls” in one of his rap verses on Nicki Minaj’s— who’s often been described as a “thick girl” in her own right—single “Only.” It happened to drop around the same time as “Thick Girl Appreciation Day,” which made it the perfect impetus for a worldwide conversation about the term “thick” and how people feel about it — thick girls included. Don’t call just anyone “thick” according to the Huffington Post, women’s feelings on the word are mixed. Some agree that it’s a compliment saying things like, “When I hear the word ‘thick’ used to describe a woman’s body, I think strong. Powerful. Capable of amazing things,” and “I think of voluptuous curves. I think of a woman that has a round, sexy booty, some full figured, no gap in between thighs, a nice figure-8 shape, and fully blossomed breasts. She looks like she can get the attention of every man.” On the other side of the spectrum were the women who had no tolerance for thick or a place for it in their vocabulary saying things like, “It’s PHOTO BY JAYBERRYTECH meant as a compliment, but I’ve never cared for it,” or that it makes them feel awkward. If thick is meant to celebrate bodies, then it’s certainly something we can get behind. But if it’s just another term to classify and sexualize, then we’ll let this one join “phat” in retirement. It’s kind of like asking if a woman’s pregnant – you better not make the mistake of saying it to the wrong woman.

In a society where thinness is celebrated, women have varying feelings about the word “thick.” Last month when Twitter users celebrated “Thick Girl Appreciation Day,” they showed how some women are embracing the term “thick” — and absolutely owning it. But not everyone is enamored of the term when it comes to describing women’s bodies. In 2014, Drake compared “thick” women to BBWs (Big Beautiful Women) in a rap verse for Nicki Minaj’s single “Only:” This reignited an old debate about whether or not “thick” and “fat” are the same thing, and whether or not that even matters. Most people weighing in agreed that the definition depends on context. We asked our Facebook community to tell us how they define “thick,” and what their relationship is with the term. As one commenter pointed out, the word may mean different things to a woman depending on her culture’s standard of beauty. This was reflected in the responses — some women considered “thick” a compliment, while others found it derogatory. Several respondents offered nuanced replies, either explaining that the descriptor could be considered either positive or negative or clarifying why they felt sure about it either way. Here’s what 20 women had to say about the word “thick:” 1. “To me, when referring to women’s bodies, it has always been a positive connotation. People tell me I am ‘thick’ in a complimentary way: I am sturdy, solid, and strong. I have a lot of thick friends who are also strong, healthy, and sturdy. I equate the term ‘thick’ with Amazon-womanesque.” 2. “When I hear the word ‘thick’ used to describe a woman’s body, I think strong. Powerful. Capable of amazing things.” 3. “I feel like thick is the hourglass body women are taught to work out for. That brick house body.” 4. “I’ve only ever heard this word used to describe plus-sized women’s bodies in a sexual way. It has a negative connotation for me and sounds demeaning to the woman/women being referred to.” 5. “I think of voluptuous curves. I think of a woman that has a round, sexy booty, some full figured, no gap in between thighs, a nice figure-8 shape, and fully blossomed breasts. She looks like she can get the attention of every man.” “Thick (when describing a woman’s body) to me is a synonym with fat.” 6. “Well, ‘thick’ is used to describe a woman who is curvy in all the right places. I guess depending on your age and where you are from you might be offended, but it is a common term used to describe a sexy, voluptuous woman... Lots of variations too including ‘slim-thick’ and thickens.’ Thickness is the shit!” 7. “Thick to me means substantially curvy, but I see people use it to describe everything from a woman simply with a thick butt and thighs, to a woman who is very overweight. To each their own!” 8. “I love the word thick. Love it. Love it. Love it. I write romance novels and use thick to describe a heroine’s thighs. My editor didn’t like it, told me some readers would find it to be offensive and a turn-off. I completely disagree, it’s a word that describes a body type that is strong, feminine, and beautiful but there are few other words that can describe such a body so wholly and with such positive and sexy connotations - in my humble opinion.”

9. “Being called ‘thick’ makes me feel awkward sometimes. It’s like catcalling. I’ll walk into a store and hear some guys talk amongst themselves going ‘damn she phat’ or ‘thick.’ It’s rude and disrespectful in my opinion. Like you’re just sizing me up and undressing me with your eyes before even getting to know me. Some girls appreciate it and consider it a compliment. Not me.” 10. “Some people may assume readily off the bat that it means fat, however, in my country Jamaica it is mostly referred as to a woman whose body is firm and is seen as a compliment.” 11. “Thick is the new way of describing a woman with an attractive ass-to-waist ratio. So many are quick to embrace it not realizing it’s setting the same unhealthy trends that the skinny models did years back. What if we just started to embrace different sizes and shapes and stopped trying to define perfection? 12. “Thick is a term used to describe a woman with nice, full thighs, round hips, a bubble butt, but manages to have a slim waist and upper body. She is not considered to be fat or skinny, but a happy middle.” 13. “I used to think of it as ‘fat’ but now I take it as a compliment. It’s a way to say that you’ve got a body that your significant other wants to grab onto. It’s the new way to call a woman sexy.” 14. “To me, it means a woman who has outstanding proportions/frame. A small tummy, but big hips and breasts.” 15. “I have always associated it with a positive term. It means a full-figured or curvy woman who is sexy and confident.” 16. “I call myself thick because I have thick thighs and a butt. I never considered it derogatory.” 17. “Thick = luscious, often athletic, but definitely sexy.” 18. “To me it means a woman has nice round thighs, or a bubbalicious booty. It’s not a synonym for fat in my mind — it’s more of an adjective that refers to a woman’s curves. It’s a nice extra layer of cushion and it’s NOT a negative term at all.” 19. “It’s meant as a compliment, but I’ve never cared for it.” 20. “Strong, bigger, and beautiful. Badass.” What does thick mean to you? Comment at realellapatterson@gmail.com

What Do Single Women Want? By Millicent Carter, Global One Contributor
What do single women really want? Suppose you were to recruit hundreds of them, across the United States, and ask them to name the number-one priority in their life. What do you think they would say? One more thing, before you answer. Set aside single women in their 20s. Youthful 20-something brides are a thing of the past. In more than a century of keeping tabs on the age at which women first get married (of those who do marry), the Census Bureau has found that first-time brides have never been older than they are now — on average, 27.4. Men are even older, on the cusp of turning 30 (29.5 to be exact). Getting married, then, is unlikely to be at the top of the list of life priorities for 20-something single women. But what about women between the ages of 30 and 45? Women who have always been single and have no kids. What do you think their numberone priority is? That was the question — among many others - posed by the marketing research company, Hill Holiday’s Origin, together with Match Media Group. More than 1,200 people were surveyed, including lifelong single men with no children and married women, in addition to the single women. Priorities of Single Women The number-one priority of single women was living on their own. Nearly half (44 percent) said that’s what mattered most to them. Named next most often as their number-one priority was establishing a career. About one-third of single women (34 percent) prioritized their career over everything else. The third most popular number-one priority of single women was financial security. More than a quarter of the women (27 percent) said that financial security mattered most. Hey, wait — where’s marriage? Aren’t single women supposed to be obsessed with getting married? That’s what advertisements, movies, and TV shows proclaim. Romantic plots are dropped mindlessly into scripts, as if the greatest talents of Hollywood are stumped when it comes to imagining any other life for a single woman. This year’s season-ending episode of Grey’s Anatomy, from the much-lauded Shondaland juggernaut, was seeded with not one, not two, but three weddings. In fact, the research I am describing was motivated in large part by a concern that popular

culture was missing the mark when it comes to single women. The single women who were surveyed agreed: 56 percent said they were not fairly represented on TV or in movies, and 44 percent said they were not fairly represented in advertisements. In the survey, only 20 percent of the single women said that getting married was their numberone priority. That puts it in fourth place, after living on their own, establishing a career, and financial security. What about having kids? Only 8 percent of the single women described that goal as their numberone priority. More of them (12 percent) said that getting promoted at work was their most important priority. Our cultural conversations are filled with angst about the “baby, maybe” question. The researchers approached the matter of priorities a second way, asking participants, “Ten years from now, what are your personal PHOTO BY ANDREA PIACQUADIO priorities?” Again, marriage was not on the top of the list. The single women consistently rated traveling as more important.

How single women see themselves Do you think the themes of Fatal Attraction are so 1987? Aren’t we passed the demented, obsessed single woman destroying the perfect life of the beautiful married man and his put-upon, blameless wife? If you think so, then you have not seen Obsessed. The single woman, played by Ali Larter, doesn’t boil anyone’s pet bunny, but she terrorizes poor Idris Elba and Beyonce in every other imaginable way. Single people do not fare well in studies of stereotyping and singlism, perhaps in part because of the ways they are portrayed in popular culture. For example, when my colleagues and I asked men and women of all marital statuses to say what comes to mind when they think of single people, here are the characteristics they mentioned most often: 36 percent — Independent 21 percent — Sociable, friendly, fun 17 percent — Lonely 11 percent — Looking for a partner 9 percent — Shy 9 percent — Flirtatious 8 percent — Unhappy In the current survey, the single women were shown a list of attributes and asked to check the ones they associated with always-single women with no kids between the ages of 30 and 45. (Because they were given a list, the percentages are likely to be higher than in my study, in which people had to generate the characteristics on their own.) Here are the characteristics single women most often actually ascribe to people like them: 77 percent — Independent 54 percent — Confident 49 percent — Responsible 43 percent — Ambitious 42 percent — Strong-minded 32 percent — Adventurous They were given the opportunity to endorse qualities such as immature, insecure, dependent, and quick to anger, but mostly declined to do so. Single women are not buying the negative stereotypes that others are trying to sell them. They do, though, know what they are up against. More than half (57 percent) agree that “there’s an expectation from others that you can’t be happy in your 30s or 40s if you’re single.” Actually, it is worse than that. Several studies have shown that single people

who say that they like being single are judged more harshly than single people who say they want to be coupled. Other people insist that the single people who like their single lives are less happy than the single people who don’t like their single lives. It is as if they are saying to the happy single people, “You are just saying you are happy; you don’t really mean it.” They express more anger toward the single people who are not complaining about their single lives. When single women were given a chance to describe what matters to them, they found that marriage wasn’t so important after all. Living on their own, establishing a career, financial security, and even traveling were higher priorities. Traveling was twice as important as having kids, and establishing a career was named as a numberone priority more than four times as often as having kids. Women “are not sitting around waiting for Mr. Right.” As I could have told them a long time ago, many single women (and men) are living their single lives fully, joyfully, and unapologetically.

Women at Texas Federal Prison Test Positive for the Corona Virus The Bureau of Prisons reported 200 women had tested positive for COVID-19 at FMC Carswell. That number jumped to 510 on Tuesday, giving Carswell the second highest number of cases out of all the country’s federal prisons. Only FCI Seagoville, Texas had more infected inmates, with 1,156 cases as of Tuesday. “We’re like a whole bunch of hamsters in a cage chasing our own tails,” Holli Chapman, an inmate at Carswell, said. As of three weeks ago, only three women had tested positive at the prison since the pandemic began. One of those women, Andrea Circle Bear, died in April. On July 12, 69year-old Sandra Kincaid became the second woman to die . Carswell from the virus. On Monday, Teresa Ely, 51, was the third woman to die. Most of the 1,357 women at Carswell have medical problems and, since April, many inmates have told the Star-Telegram that they feared what would happen if the virus began to spread through the prison. Carswell’s administration referred questions to the Bureau of Prisons. In a statement, the BOP said it is monitoring coronavirus at all its prisons, including FMC Carswell, and is taking steps to prevent the spread of the virus. “As with any type of emergency situation, we carefully assess how to best ensure the safety of staff, inmates and the public,” the BOP said. “All of our facilities are implementing the BOP’s guidance on mitigating the spread of COVID-19.” Multiple women in the prison told the Star-Telegram last week that the prison did not have enough cleaning supplies or personal protection equipment, and that cells are not immediately sanitized after someone tests positive. Inmate Sandra Shoulders described a mountain of mattresses from those who tested positive piling up in a TV room. She said the prison planned on sanitizing the mattresses and reusing them. Chapman said inmates at Carswell feel “anxious, angry, scared, dehumanized, lied to.” Chapman said they stopped getting two meals a day and instead receive one sack lunch with a cold sandwich inside. “We feel basically abandoned,” she said. “(Officers) are saying they’re doing all this stuff for us, that they’re in here with us. But they’re not the ones in 24hour quarantine, left in a 6-by-6 cell with three other people with 10-minute showers, 10 minutes to be on the phone or email to communicate with their families.” On July 14, Chapman said the administration handed out printed notices to inmates about what they were doing to stop the spread of the virus. Inmates were told to stay in their

rooms, and masks were handed out for the first time in two months, she said. She said administration wrote at the end of the notice that “we are making every effort to limit cross contamination and appreciate you doing your part.” Reality Winner also tested positive for the virus, AP News reported. Winner is serving a five-year prison sentence at Carswell for leaking a classified government document to a news agency. The documents discussed Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Winner is a former Air Force translator who worked as a contractor at a National Security Agency office. A friend shared Winner’s email with the Star-Telegram about testing positive. In the email, Winner said an officer mocked her for testing positive and she has faced retaliation for talking to the media. “The officer went out of her way to come to my room and say, ‘I just wanted to congratulate you on your positive results,’” Winner wrote. Winner also said she had not been able to buy basic hygiene products and had not had a hot meal in three weeks. In a statement, the BOP said it is “carefully monitoring the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” and is in Phase 8 of its COVID-19 action plan. The plan is detailed on the agency’s website and includes actions such as limited inmate transfers, increased cleaning and testing and enhanced health screening of staff. Soap is available throughout institutions and cells, and is able to be purchased through the commissary, the BOP said. In the statement, the BOP did not answer questions about the inmates’ meals or access to other hygiene products. “The BOP follows CDC guidance the same as community doctors and hospitals with regard to quarantine and isolation procedures, along with providing appropriate treatment,” the BOP said in the statement.

Hearty Spaghetti and Meatballs
This spaghetti recipe is light on the sauce, which is more typical of how spaghetti is actually served in Italy. If you would like more sauce, you may want to thin it with water, or add more canned tomatoes to the sauce. Make the sauce and the spaghetti simultaneously. The sauce should be done in the time it takes to heat the pasta water and cook the spaghetti. Feel free to vary the amount of sausage for the sauce. We use anywhere from 1/2 pound to a full pound of Italian sausage, half sweet, half spicy. INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • 1 yellow onion, finely chopped (about 1 1/2 to 2 cups) • 2 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 teaspoons) • 6 ounces (170 g) Italian sweet sausage (or one 7-to-8inch link) • 6 ounces (170 g) Italian hot and spicy sausage (or one 7 to 8-inch link) • 1 large (28 oz, 794 g) can of crushed tomatoes (or purée a can of whole peeled tomatoes) • 1-pound (16 oz, 450 g) spaghetti pasta • Salt • Freshly grated Parmesan cheese
METHOD 1 Sauté onions and garlic: Heat a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet on medium or medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook a minute more. 2 Put pasta water on to boil: While the onions are cooking, put a large pot of salted water on to boil for the pasta (4 quarts water, 2 Tbsp salt). 3 Brown the sausage: Remove the cooked onion and garlic from the pan and set aside. Remove the sausage meat from the casings (if your sausage is in links) and add to the pan, breaking up the meat with your fingers as you add it to the pan. Cook on medium heat until just lightly browned. 4 Add tomatoes, onions, garlic: Add crushed or puréed canned tomatoes with their juices to the skillet with the sausage meat. Add the cooked onions and garlic. Heat to a bare simmer. 5 Boil the spaghetti pasta: Once the pasta water has come to a rolling boil, add the spaghetti pasta. Allow the water to return to a rolling boil. Cook, uncovered, with a vigorous boil, for as long as the directions on the pasta package say, usually about 10-12 minutes. When pasta is al dente (cooked but still a little firm), remove the pot from the heat. Drain the pasta and place it in a serving bowl. Serve immediately. Toss with the sauce and garnish with grated Parmesan cheese.

Favorite Alcoholic Drinks Amaretto Sour The exact origins of this sweet drink are mostly a mystery. Many believe it became popular in the 1970s when Italian spirits started making their way to the U.S. Traditionally made with amaretto liqueur and fresh lemon juice, some also add an egg white to this classic cocktail. Perfect Strawberry Daiquiri Bellini Made with Prosecco, peach puree and a little raspberry juice, this bubbly cocktail was invented in the mid-1930s by Giuseppe Cipriani in Venice. Considered to be the mimosa’s Italian cousin, it is said that Cipriani named this drink after the famed Venetian artist Giovanni Bellini.
Aviation Cocktail This cocktail was invented by Hugo Ensslin, a bartender at the Hotel Wallick in New York. It is typically made with gin, maraschino liqueur, creme de violette and lemon juice. While some choose to omit the flowerpowered creme de violette, others consider it essential to create the Aviation’s signature lavender hue.

Interesting Alcohol Facts Alcohol is the intoxicating ingredient that is present in wine, beer, and spirits. It is a depressant, which means that when it reaches the brain, it slows down the body’s systems. It can also be difficult for the body to process, putting extra pressure on the liver, the digestive system, the cardiovascular system, and other functions. Alcohol is a legal recreational substance for adults and one of the most commonly used drugs in the United States. People consume alcohol to socialize, to relax, and to celebrate. It is commonly misused among individuals of all ages, resulting in significant health, legal, and socioeconomic damage. In 2017, around half of all Americans aged over 18 years had consumed alcohol in the last month. Just over 9 percent of those aged 12 to 17 years had done so. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 15.1 million people aged 18 years and over in the U.S. had alcohol use disorder (AUD), or 6.2 percent of this age group. Fast Facts About Alcohol • Pure alcohol is a colorless, odorless, and flammable liquid. • Fruits and grains are the foods most commonly used foods to make alcohol. • Alcohol is the number one abused drug by minors in the U.S. • The liver can only oxidize about one drink per hour. • Alcohol is known to be harmful to developing brains, from before birth to adolescence. • No amount of alcohol consumption can be considered safe during pregnancy. • Combined with other medications, whether over the counter or prescribed, alcohol’s effects can be deadly. Short-term Effects One to two drinks can make you feel relaxed. Within minutes of consuming alcohol, it is absorbed into the bloodstream by blood vessels in the stomach lining and small intestine. It then travels to the brain, where it quickly produces its effects. The short-term effects of alcohol depend on: • how much is consumed • how quickly • the weight, sex, and body fat percentage of the individual • whether or not they have eaten Drinking with a meal slows the rate of absorption, resulting in fewer side effects and less intoxication.
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
Signs of Intoxication At first, the person may feel relaxed, uninhibited, or giddy. As they consume more alcohol, intoxication may result. Other signs of intoxication include: • slurred speech • clumsiness and unsteady gait • drowsiness • vomiting • headache • distortion of senses and perception • loss of consciousness • lapses in memory How Much Alcohol? One drink is the equivalent of: • 12 ounces of beer that is around 5 percent alcohol, depending on the type • 5 ounces of wine that is around 12 percent alcohol • 1.5- ounces of spirits, or a “shot,” at about 40 percent alcohol • 8 ounces of malt liquor, at around 7 percent alcohol In other words, these servings all contain the same amount of alcohol: 0.6 ounces. Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream. It is expressed as the weight of ethanol in grams per 100 milliliter (ml) of blood. The University of West Virginia suggests that a person may experience the following, depending on individual factors:

The body absorbs alcohol relatively quickly, but it takes longer to get the alcohol out of the body. The liver needs about 1 hour to process one drink. Consuming several drinks in a short time causes the alcohol builds up in the body. This puts the body’s systems under pressure. It can lead to illness and, in severe cases, death. After 8 to 9 drinks, vision becomes blurred and the person is likely to feel nauseated. It also increases the risk of blackouts, especially on an empty stomach. During this time, a person may do things that they do not remember later. Binge drinking is defined as drinking within 2 hours: Five or more drinks for a man Four or more drinks for a woman. This is because women and men metabolize alcohol differently. Intoxication impairs judgment and can result in inappropriate and illegal behaviors such as sexual promiscuity, disorderly conduct, driving while intoxicated and acts of violence. In 2014, 31 percent of all driving fatalities in the U.S. were alcohol related. Alcohol Toxicity When the amount of alcohol in the blood exceeds a certain level, this can lead to alcohol toxicity, or poisoning. This is a dangerous condition. Since alcohol is a depressant, it can slow the breathing, leading to a lack of oxygen to the brain. Signs and symptoms include: • confusion • vomiting • seizures • slow breathing GLOBALONEMAG.COM
Alcohol Intolerance Some people will feel unwell immediately after drinking alcohol. They may have an intolerance, insensitivity, or allergy to alcohol or another ingredient in a drink. Symptoms include: • facial flushing • nausea and vomiting • worsening of asthma • diarrhea • low blood pressure Alcohol intolerance can be a sign of Hodgkin lymphoma. Anyone who suddenly develops an intolerance may be advised to see a doctor in case there is an underlying condition. Combining alcohol with other depressant-type medications whether over-the-counter preparations, prescription, or recreational drugs—can have serious effects on the respiratory and central nervous systems. It is especially dangerous to mix alcohol with GHB, rohypnol, ketamine, tranquilizers, and sleeping pills. Hangover After drinking too much in an evening, a person may continue to feel the effects of the alcohol on waking up, with what is commonly called a “hangover.” This is because alcohol is toxic to the body, and the body is still working to get rid of the toxin. Many of the symptoms are caused by dehydration, but some chemicals in alcoholic drinks can cause a reaction in the blood vessels and the brain that make symptoms worse. Symptoms include: • headaches • diarrhea • nausea • fatigue • racing heart • dry mouth and eyes • difficulty concentrating • restlessness Around 20 percent of alcohol is absorbed through the stomach. Most of the remaining 80 percent is absorbed through the small intestine. Around 5 percent of the alcohol consumed leaves through the lungs, kidneys, and the skin. The liver removes the rest. Since the liver can only process the equivalent of one drink at a time, the body may remain saturated with the alcohol that has not yet left the body. It can take from 2 to 3 hours for the body to metabolize alcohol from one to two drinks, and up to 24 hours to process the alcohol from eight to ten drinks. A hangover can last up to 24 hours. Doctors advise not drinking again within 48 hours of a heavy drinking session, to allow the body to recover.

Long-term Effects Alcohol contributes to over 200 diseases and injuryrelated health conditions including dependence and addiction, liver cirrhosis, cancers, and unintentional injuries such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, burns, assaults, and drowning. Around 88,000 people in the U.S die from alcohol-related causes every year. This makes it the third leading preventable cause of death. Long-term alcohol misuse is associated with the following health problems: Drinking too much too often can lead to … • depression. • liver disease • pancreatitis • cardiomyopathy, or damage to the heart muscle • other cardiovascular problems • peripheral neuropathy • stomach ulcers • cancer • immune system dysfunction • osteoporosis • brain and nerve damage • vitamin deficiencies • mental health problems: anxiety and depression Alcohol affects everybody system, so it can cause health problems throughout the body. Research shows that women who drink more alcohol than is recommended on a regular basis tend to develop liver disease, cardiomyopathy, and nerve damage after fewer years than men who do the same. Of major concern is the number of young people who consume alcohol. Research suggests that 20 percent of college students meet the criteria for AUD, and the condition affects some 623,000 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years. Alcohol can have a serious effect on the developing brain, from fetal development to the end of adolescence. If a woman consumes alcohol during pregnancy, the child may be born with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). In 2015, this was believed to affect between 2 and 7 newborns in every 1,000. Symptoms can be similar to those of ADHD. Addiction and Withdrawal If a person consumes large amounts of alcohol regularly, their tolerance can increase, and the body requires more alcohol to achieve the desired effect. As the body adapts to the presence of the drug, dependency and addiction can result. If consumption stops suddenly, the person may experience withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol addiction is a disease characterized by a strong craving for alcohol, and continued use despite a negative impact on health, interpersonal relationships, and ability to

work. If the person stops drinking, they will experience withdrawal symptoms. Signs and symptoms of withdrawal generally occur between 4 and 72 hours after the last drink or after reducing intake. They peak at about 48 hours and may last up to 5 days. They may include: • mild tremors • insomnia • anxiety • depressed mood Many people will take a drink to stop the discomfort of withdrawal. In more severe cases, the person may experience Delirium tremens, or “the DTs.” This condition involves: • body tremors (shaking) • hallucinations or changes in mental status • confusion • extreme sleepiness • seizures that can result in death Delirium tremens is a medical emergency. Anyone with an alcohol dependency disorder who desires to stop drinking should seek professional medical care or a treatment center specializing in safe alcohol detoxification. Treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder The treatment of alcohol dependency involves a variety of interventions, and it requires medical, social, and family support. Strategies include: • individual and group counseling • medication, such as disulfiram (Antabuse), naltrexone and acamprosate (Campral) • participation in support networks such as Alcoholics Anonymous • A detoxification program in a hospital or medical facility is another option for those who need a higher level of care. According to legend, coffee was discovered in the 9th century when an Ethiopian goat herder named Khaldi noticed that his normally lethargic goats were more excitable after they had nibbled the red berries from an evergreen tree. Khaldi took the berries to a Muslim holy man, who turned the raw fruit of the coffee tree into the delicious beverage. Though coffee was discovered in Ethiopia around A.D. 850, it wasn’t until it spread to Mocha, Yemen, in around 1100 that it became firmly established as a popular drink. From Mocha (from which Mocha coffee derives its name), beans were shipped to India, Java, and eventually Europe in 1515. By 1675, England had more than 3,000 coffee houses. Coffee was originally regarded as a wonder drug in Yemen and Arabia and was taken only at the advice of a doctor. Many saw coffees as a brain tonic or as a way to stimulate religious visions. Arabs were the first to cultivate coffee trees on the Arabian Peninsula. Arabs typically roasted and boiled coffee, or qahwa, which is Arabic for “the wine of Islam.” A 2011 study showed that women who drink two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day were 15% less likely to develop depression over a 10-year period than those who drank one cup of coffee or less per week. More than 500 billion cups of coffee are consumed each year, making coffee the world’s most popular beverage. It is also the world’s most traded commodity, after crude oil. The only places in North America where coffee is grown is in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The world’s first coffee house opened in 1475 in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). When Khair Bey, the governor of Mecca, banned coffee in 1511 because he feared it might encourage resistance to his rule, the sultan executed him on the grounds that coffee was actually “blessed.” Coffee was imported from Arabia to Europe through Venice in the 1600s. While some monks urged Pope Clemente VIII to outlaw the “Muslim” drink, the pope argued that the drink was so good that it would be a “sin” to let only “pagans drink it.” Coffee thus began to spread across Europe. When the first coffeehouse opened in England in 1652, women were prohibited from entering, other than to serve men. A Belgian named George Washington invented instant coffee in 1906 in Guatemala. Research has shown that drinking coffee may decrease cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders. The Arabs discovered coffee but were jealous of their discovery and refused to allow fertile coffee seeds to leave their country. However, a 17th-century Muslim pilgrim, Baba Budan, smuggled seven seeds out of Arabia and planted them in India. It is said that all the world’s coffee came from these seven seeds.

15. Americans are the world’s leading coffee consumer. They consume 450 million cups of coffee per day, or more than 150 billion cups a year. 16. There are two main species of the coffee plant used to commercially produce coffee: 1) Coffee arabica, which originated in the Middle East, and 2) Coffee robusta, which originated in the Congo. Arabica trees produce the best quality coffee and are the most widely cultivated (3/4 of the world’s coffee), while Robusta beans are hardier, contain 40-50% more caffeine, and are used in many instant coffees. 17. The Dutch were the first Europeans to enter the coffee trade. They imported coffee plants from the Malabar Coast of India to their colonies in what were then called the Dutch East Indies, or present-day Indonesia. 18. In 1715, Dutch coffee merchants presented the influential King of France, Louis XIV, with a coffee tree of his own. Millions and millions of trees have sprung from that single tree, thanks in part to Chevalier Gabriel Mathieu de Clieu, who stole some cuttings from the tree and began cultivating coffee in Martinique in the Caribbean. Within 50 years, there were over 20 million trees in Martinique and neighboring islands. 19. Although yields vary from harvest to harvest, a single coffee tree usually provides only enough coffee beans in a year to fill a half-kilo (one pound) bag of ground coffee. 20. It takes 3 to 4 years for a coffee tree to mature. Once it matures, each tree will bear one to two pounds of coffee beans per growing season. 21. Light roast coffee has more caffeine that dark roast coffee. The longer coffee is roasted, the more caffeine is cooked from the bean.

22. The Turks call their coffee houses “schools for the wise.” 23. Coffee was banned three times in three different cultures: once in Mecca in the 16th century, once when Charles II in Europe banned the drink in an attempt to quiet an ongoing revolution, and once when Frederick the Great banned coffee in Germany in 1677 because he was concerned people were spending too much money on the drink. 24. The coffee industry employs 25 million people around the world. 25. Tea was more popular than coffee in America until King George the III’s Stamp Act of 1767 increased taxes. The result was the Boston Tea Party, a rebellion in which Bostonians dumped the British East India tea cargos into a harbor. From that point, coffee became America’s national drink and was emotionally linked with its revolution. 26. With more than four billion coffee trees, Brazil is the world’s leading producer of coffee. In fact, Brazil produces around one third of the world’s coffee today. Vietnam, Indonesia, Colombia, and India round out the top five coffee-producing countries. 27. Coffee trees are cultivated in over 70 countries, mostly in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. 28. The health effects of coffee depend largely on how coffee is prepared. For example, coffee paper filters remove oily components called diterpenes, which have been linked to coronary heart disease. Metal filters, however, do not remove these oily components. 29. Studies show that men who drink six or more cups of coffee daily decrease their risk of developing prostate cancer by 20%. 30. The word “coffee” is from the Arabic qahwah, which is thought to have meant “wine.” The Turkish word for coffee, kahve, is derived from the Arabic word and is related to the word café. Other scholars believe the word is from Kaffa, a region in Ethiopia where coffee is thought to have originated. 31. To produce enough beans to make one cup of coffee requires 37 gallons of water. By comparison, an apple takes 19 gallons, a banana 27, and a pair of leather shoes 4,400 gallons. 32. One third of the tap water used for drinking in North America is used to brew daily cups of coffee. 33. Studies show that drinking coffee reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, cirrhosis of the liver, and gout. 34. An estimated four out of five Americans start their day with a cup of coffee. 35. Besides Americans, the two other largest drinkers of coffee are the French and the Germans. These three countries drink approximately 65% of the total coffee consumed in the world. 36. During WWII, American soldiers were known as G.I. Joes. Because they drank large amounts of coffee, the drink soon earned the popular nickname “a cup of Joe.”[ 37. The most expensive coffee in the world is Indonesia’s Kopi Luwak or civet coffee. It is made from coffee beans that have

been eaten, partially digested, and then excreted by a weasellike animal called the Asian palm civet. These beans sell for more than $600 a pound, or $50 a cup. The amount of caffeine in coffee depends on the type of beans, how they were roasted, and how the coffee was brewed. Typically, a small 8-ounce cup of coffee has between 65 milligrams of caffeine if it’s instant and 115 milligrams if its drip brewed. In the United States, September 29 is celebrated as National Coffee Day. In Costa Rica, it’s September 12; in Ireland, it’s September 19; and in Japan, it’s October 1. Because the organs and systems in a fetus are not able to metabolize and excrete caffeine fully, caffeine can stay in its blood 10 times longer than in an adult. Because of this, physicians advise that pregnant women drink a moderate (less than 200 milligrams) amount coffee per day. Coffee contains antioxidants, which helps prevent free radicals from damaging cells. One study found that a typical servicing (approximately 9 oz) of coffee contains more antioxidants than a serving of grape juice, blueberries, raspberries, or oranges. Starbucks opened in Seattle in 1971. In 2010, it boasted revenues of $10.7 billion and 16,850 stores in 40 countries, making it the world’s top coffee retailer. Starbucks offers over 87,000 possible drink combinations. The smell of burning wood is the most recognizable odor in America. The smell of coffee is the second. PIXABAY Starbucks coffee shops use over 93 PHOTO million BY gallons of milk per year. This would be enough to fill 155 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Additionally, they use 2.3 billion paper cups annually. The name Starbucks was inspired by a character in the novel Moby Dick. The owners almost named their coffee shop Pequod, after the whaling ship in the novel.

Travel The World
Traveling with Lorenzo - Adventure Traveler - Global One Journalist
TELLURIDE By Lorenzo Vigil / Adventure Travel / Global One Journalist
PHOTOS BY LORENZO VIGIL
I started by planning this trip with the best intentions , hoping that all the things that I’ve read and seen on TV and the internet will give me a firsthand experience. I hoped for the kind of story that will give you a “magical” and full of beauty incite. You know the kind of stories that start out as, “Once upon a time!” Well, what if I told you this place is dubbed the Swiss Alps of America and I found it to be exactly that and much...much more. Destination, Telluride or Bust! The only planning that took place was the day and approximate time that we would leave and like all the best laid plans we ended leaving way earlier and more loaded down with a huge four-wheeler and more building materials for my dad. My travel companion is a native to Colorado so we both knew that the drive from Dallas, Texas would be quite an undertaking. This was to be a boy’s trip. NO kids, no girlfriends. I need the bathroom every fifty miles, no I’m hungry, no one screaming he touches me. Just me and a cooler full of beer and food for five days. If you’ve ever taken a drive in any direction in Texas you know that its flatter then the bottom of a hot iron, the dirt is red as the stripes of the flag and the rivers have a murky sandy color, but for now it’s home and even when I’m gone for a few days I still miss it. We Set Out Early So, we set out in the middle of the night to purposely reach the top of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico by daybreak. My family owns a ranch in Colorado, so I make the drive (with kids) a few times a year. Reaching this spot by daybreak is always my goal. You can see off the top of the mountains for 40 or 50 miles. Looking out onto the rolling prairie for miles and miles like the explorers Lewis and Clark did for the first time. The mountain air is so crisp and clean and smells of Pine and Douglas fir like an unending Christmas smell that brings back childhood memories of family and ranch life. An hour or so later were on the family ranch and rest for the night before pushing further into the western slope, but not before we stop and hug on Granny’s neck and tell her what the plans are, so she doesn’t get mad that we didn’t see her on our way. That night it was steaks grilled on an open fire, cut from the family stock of cattle. My favorite is the rib eye cooked to perfection, the marbling melting in your mouth with the hint of garlic butter and salt. Sitting here now as I write this story suddenly my mouth begins to water. The morning came early but the smell of a fire in the kitchen and the smell of fresh coffee revived me. The kitchen window is framed with a 14000 ft peak in the distance and the pastures below it are green and ready to cut the first bales of winter cattle feed. This is, by far, one of my favorite things in life. Like every other day Dad was cooking fresh red potatoes and eggs and even at 46 I still felt like an elementary school kid waking up to watch Saturday morning cartoons on the living room floor with a blanket. Back on the Road We left dad with the materials we brought for him and left after breakfast driving with a much lighter load. Another five hours of twisting and turning, driving in the mountains, through fields of hay next to cool rivers that are clear and sweet tasting. Have you ever put you face into a cold stream and taken a drink? Have you tasted what home feels like? Personally, this will be my first time to visit Telluride but, to my benefit, my buddy Brandon is a native and knows all the secret spots. GLOBALONEMAG.COM
I took so many pictures driving north on highway 145 that it felt like I had never seen mountains before. The sights are all so awe inspiring. July in Colorado is a sight to be seen. As the road summits over high mountains there is so much color everywhere in every direction. I know I wouldn’t be the first to say its Gods country. We Embraced Mother Nature As we were about thirty minutes from town, we began descending next to Trout Lake. There is a heavy cloud lumbering just over the water only letting hints of the blue water sneak past its grasp. The more we descend the mirror sheen begins to reflect the cove of mountains surrounding its hidden treasures. Even with a light mist people on kayaks and paddle boards are strew about enjoying the privacy only known to those willing to suffer just a little for the richer reward of Mother Nature’s embrace. Simply put, driving into town is a feast for the senses. First you see the buildings of Main Street but THEN… you see the mountains that hold Telluride in its gentle embrace. The town is situated in a canyon with towering mountains on 3 sides. Standing in the middle of the street looking straight uptown there is a bright white waterfall that tumbles down the face of the mountain. I stand there dumbfounded and simply jealous that people live here every day. I have found my Valhalla….my heaven. Then I remember how hungry I am, and my hunger brings me back to earth. The little shops are selling all kinds of sweet-smelling treats. Vendors are everywhere selling all kinds of food. The crisp air you feel on your skin even in July is calming. I Had to Have A Burger There was one thing that I wanted, and I had to have it…a cheeseburger! Mere feet from where we were parked there was this burger place on main that I wanted to try so away we went. I also noticed right away that everyone on the street that appear to be locals are all wearing sportswear. The only traffic are people coming and going into and out of town. Everyone that lives here are riding bikes and walking. You also notice that because of this fact for the

most part everyone is in relatively good physical condition….they’re healthy!! This would be the only day that we eat on Main Street. Two burgers, two fries and two cokes came to the awesome total of $60.00. Don’t get me wrong the food was delicious but I’m still on a budget. We Decided to Hike Feeling rejuvenated we decided to take a short thirty-minute hike up Cornet Creek and find Cornet Falls. Just two blocks away from where we were sitting down eating, we walk past these houses that all look so perfectly manicured. I swear everyone here is OCD. The rocks, the leaves, the grass in the yards have all been tended to by Hobbits and I think I’m in the shire. As we pass the last house there a small path that begins leaning upwards and before long, I sound like a 20year smoker sucking air with the weight of lunch weighing me down. Brandon passes me like I was standing still and as he does, I notice this (expletive expletive) is wearing flip flops. That pisses me off just enough to keep up with him in my high dollar hiking boots. The whole hike up we are seeing this rushing creek bouncing over granite boulders that over time have taken and washed them clean leaving makes of time. Passing the last few trees, we get the rush of wind from the falling water. The mist that hits your face washes away the sweat. It erases the need to pick up an email or the want of a desk. Standing the test of time at 80 feet high Cornet Falls is a must see. This is only the beginning of the trip what other gems will this adventure reveal. We Had No Reservations, But Survived We have no expensive hotel. What do we have is a cooler and camping gear? It’s getting late and we must find somewhere to sleep. Driving back to Trout Lake we skirt around following a dirt road not knowing where it leads but Brandon had heard there were some good spots to set up camp. We found a spot right from the pages of Narnia. A bubbling brook of clear water was surrounded by tall trees. A small clearing with short grass that I’m sure the elves themselves had planted because sights like these are for imagination and the movies far off places that only the wealthy can afford but here, we are with a hope and a prayer and willing spirit. After camp was made dinner was eaten, I crawled into my tent feeling very happy. I remember that first night I was woken up by a thunderstorm shaking my tent with heavy rain and wind. I laid awake for a couple hours there on the ground just thinking. Thinking about how thankful I was for the trip, how amazing the earth smelled, and how I knew it would be over sooner than I wanted. Hiking the Via Ferrata The next day was breakfast with a bath and shave near the lake before we set off for the day’s hike. We planned on driving up the 4x4 road called Black Bear Pass and seeing Bridal Falls and then hiking the Via Ferrata. Now let me attempt the explanation of a Via Ferrata. You hike up a narrow death-defying path to an unspeakable height of oh let’s say 1500 feet above the canyon floor and carefully ease your way down a path only inches wide coming to a vertical face of rock and instead of continuing upwards you hike across it horizontally. This is where the real challenge begins. Anchor points have been established footrests and handholds have been installed but it doesn’t dismiss the fact that the path disappears. Yes, that’s right…. the path disappears into nothing but bars of steel.
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
Not for The Faint of Heart If you have a fear of heights this might not be the best thing for you. You can do a lot of things that can give you an adrenalin rush, but this kind of hike took time and effort. Walking up the trail I remember having to convince myself over and over to keep going. There were moments of serious vertigo. I would have to stop and focus just on the rock face because seeing the drop off was making it hard to focus without getting dizzy. You Can Do Many Things for Free After we made our way back down to town, we did some sightseeing and bar hopping. There is a free chair lift that’s takes you all over the place including to the top of the mountain where there is a restaurant with a view and also to the other side where mountain village is full of shops and restaurants. There are so many things that we did that didn’t cost anything. We found a local “Hippie Dip”. They’re free thermal baths out in the woods where people go to relax have a drink or smoke a little something and enjoy one of the many attractions that make this place magical. We did so much with so little during this trip; we met bartenders and wait staff that were welcoming and insightful. We talked and shared drinks with townsfolk that loved living their lives in such a beautiful place. People here are happy. If you ever want to take a trip and share it with someone you love, there are sights to be seen that are unforgettable. Your kids will remember the best day gaming but when you get them out of the house and show them things like this place, they’ll never forget that time you made them go outside and have an adventure. There are no nights out to dinner or drinking that compares to these memories. I have learned how to live my life outside, feeling the sun on my face and the wind in my hair. I recommend you try it to. It’s the best.

Traveling with Denella @ Home Edition Travel
VENICE, ITALY Today I’m Dreaming of Venice, Italy By Denella Ri’chard, Global One Travel Journalist
Venice….some call it the city of water; others call it the floating city. I call it, one of the most romantic cities in the world. It’s the place where I can get lost in a maze of streets around Saint Mark’s Square. It’s a place where I can let my hair fly in the wind in a speeding water taxi. Or I can simply relax in a floating gondola and be serenaded under a full moon along the Grand Canal. History, culture, art, and magnificent cuisine, you’ll find it all in Venice. Venice is the kind of place that touches your soul and once you’ve been there, you’ll always long to return. I wish I could travel to Venice right now, in this moment. It’s when you are restricted from having something, you miss it most. COVID-19 has changed the way we travel. We don’t have the freedom to just jump up and go any more. There are many places where borders are still closed, flights are limited, and quarantines are imposed. And unfortunately, Venice is not open to tourist at this moment. However, it does not stop us from dreaming and planning to visit in 2021 and 2022. So, once we can travel to Venice again, here are the Top 5 things I recommend you see and do: 1) St. Mark’s Square: This is a must! This iconic site is the heart of Venice. You can easily access most of the main streets from here. Around the square you’ll find cafes, restaurants, shopping, museums and more… It’s also a great place to people watch, interact with the friendly pigeons, and take amazing photos. The locals recommend you visit in the early morning, around 7am. It is most peaceful at this time and it’s not crowded. 2) Water Taxi – This is one of the most popular ways to get around Venice. While private water taxis can be expensive, it’s the best way to be privately chauffeured around Venice. If you are more budget conscious, then I recommend the water bus called vaporetto. The water bus will take you from point to point and it’s an inexpensive way to tour the Grand Canal. You can ride the vaporetto from the lagoon through the Grand Canal, past the Rialto Bridge and on to the train station.

3) Day trip to Burano: This Venetian island town could be the most colorful place in the world, with all the houses painted in bright colors making each street look like a rainbow. Book a walking tour with Silvia Zanella at DiscoverBurano.com and truly experience life like the locals for a day. 4) The Doge’s Palaces – The Doge's Palace is a palace built in Venetian Gothic style, and one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice in northern Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Venetian Republic. It was founded in 1340 and extended and modified in the following centuries. It became a museum in 1923 and is one of the 11 museums run by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.A visit to this famous museum is a must. The architecture is beautiful Venetian Gothic style. You’ll be amazed with the history of the palace, its famous art, and the magnificence of its golden staircases. You can also enjoy some amazing views of Venice from here. 5) Osteria, where the locals dine: An osteria is a mix of a bar and restaurant. The menu is short consisting of “small bites” like local specialties such as pasta and grilled meat or fish, often served at shared tables. You can also enjoy wine, or as the locals call it an “ombra de vin”. (Ombra means a small glass of wine to be shared with a friend or consumed in an osteria.) So, as you dream about Venice and start planning your travel for 2021 and 2022, I highly recommend you contact a professional travel advisor to get the latest travel advisories. At the time of writing this article, according to Italian Government: Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Americans traveling to/from are only allowed for precise reasons, such as work, health or study reasons, absolute urgency, return to home, home, or residence. Travel for tourism is not allowed, at this time. The return to Italy is permitted to Italian/EU/Schengen citizens and their family members, as well as holders of residence permits and their family members with conditions such as fiduciary isolation and healthy surveillance. The goal of Traveling with Denella is to keep the audience dreaming about the joys of travel, as we work through the COVID 19 period. Those in the tourist and hospitality industries need our support by traveling and patronizing local tourist businesses as keen measures and protocols are put into place to keep us all safe. Traveling with Denella is a great vehicle to help spotlight travel and remind us that the world is still out there waiting on us to explore, enjoy and indulge.

PHOTO BY DALLAS AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM
The African American Museum Dallas does more than most people know. Existing as both an institutional and communal enterprise, the Museum crisscrosses a blurred line of responsibilities to bridge the toiled, yet brilliant moments of life and culture effused by African Americans. As with many black institutions, this exploration has resulted in constant innovation to exist through the struggles of many tomorrows. The following examples are only highlighting of their longest running programs and projects; however, these examples are only a small few of the hundreds of annual endeavors such as socials, events, exhibitions, programs, and projects performed by the Museum. It is the sincere wish of the Museum to benefit our members, volunteers, and the public in the most optimum manner. The African American Museum was founded in 1974 as a part of the Special Collections at Bishop College, a historically black college that closed in 1988. The Museum has operated independently since 1979.

THE DALLAS ARBORETUM More than 979,219 visitors from all 50 states, as well as 90 countries, came through our gates in 2018. The Arboretum has been listed among the top arboretums in the world and the number of honors is so extensive it is listed on our website. The Dallas Arboretum is proud to offer the public an array of popular annual events, educational programs for children and adults, and an emphasis on family-oriented activities. Ground-breaking horticultural research conducted in our Trial Gardens continues to contribute to an important body of knowledge, both regionally and nationally. Located on the shores of White Rock Lake, the Arboretum’s 66 acres include a complete life science laboratory with endless potential for discovery. The Arboretum has a 75-member Board of Directors, 120 full-time paid staff members, 50+ part-time paid staff members, and more than 273 active volunteers. The Future Because the Arboretum is younger than many of the nation’s botanic gardens and arboreta, there is still considerable room for growth and development of the gardens as well as its research and education efforts. The Arboretum is now completing an update of its 2001 Master Plan for the development of the remaining undeveloped spaces at the Arboretum. The Master Plan also provides for an extension of the tram path to encompass the entire area. The Story The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden was founded upon the dreams of a few visionaries with a passion for preserving both history and nature. Though the gardens themselves are comparatively young, the work that went into creating the current gardens began long ago. The historic DeGolyer house on the grounds of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens: • In 1974, the Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Society (DABS) adopted bylaws, elected officers, and incorporated as a nonprofit organization. • In 1977, the City of Dallas Park Board recommended that the grounds of the DeGolyer Estate, which the city purchased from Southern Methodist University, be the official location of the botanical garden. The city encouraged DABS to raise funds for the initial costs. • During 1978 and 1979, DABS membership and awareness increased. Both business and local citizens began to support of the Arboretum project. • By 1980, DABS had raised over one million dollars and purchased the 22-acre Alex Camp House, which is adjacent to the DeGolyer Estate. Both houses are located on White Rock Lake. • In 1982, the City of Dallas and DABS signed a contract creating an arboretum and botanical garden on the combined 66 acres of the DeGolyer and Camp properties. The gardens opened to the public for the first time in 1984. Dallas Arboretum 8525 Garland Road Dallas, Texas 75218 Phone: 214-515-6615

Best Midsize 3 Row SUV - 2021 Kia Telluride by Ella Patterson
The Kia Telluride has captivated me since its debut last year. This is
Kia's biggest SUV, and, like most three-row midsize SUVs, it seats up to eight passengers. Other aspect of the 2021 Telluride does things a little nicer than the rest. Its cabin is luxury-like in its quality and the third-row seat can comfortably fit adults. The Telluride rides effortlessly and is equipped with the latest technology and safety highlights. There is a marvelous warranty and competitive pricing. The 2020 Telluride SX V6 AWD is a comfortable, capable, and loyal family hauler. I fell in love with the Telluride after several thousand miles behind the wheel. The Telluride is a pleasant SUV to drive. Its V6 engine is responsive, though outright acceleration is ultimately average for a three-row SUV. In testing, the Telluride test vehicle sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, which is similar to the acceleration of the Honda Pilot and Hyundai Palisade. The brakes are strong and can bring the Telluride to a halt in a hurry. They're also easy to modulate for consistent and smooth stops. The steering is light at parking-lot speeds and weights up naturally in turns. The Telluride is stable when going around turns and doesn't demonstrate unnecessary body roll. The engine's fuelsaving stop-start feature works smoothly and quietly. The Telluride offers a very roomy and upscale-feeling cabin with easy access to all three rows. Passenger space is excellent in both the second and third rows. The space feels more open thanks in part to
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
the abundance of large windows. The front-passenger knee room is close. The controls are clearly labeled and arranged logically, but the driver has to stretch to reach the infotainment screen. Visibility is excellent thanks to plenty of large windows. The camera systems and parking sensors are wonderful extras. Tellurides come with numerous collision avoidance and mitigation systems as well as adaptive cruise control that operates down to a stop. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, with numerous USB ports that are spread across all three rows, although only one can transmit data. The optional wider infotainment screen (EX and up) looks sharp, and it comes with navigation that offers several useful features. The upgraded 10-speaker sound system is also excellent. The turn-signal camera display in the gauge cluster is less impressive. It's small, low-resolution, and mostly redundant given the regular blindspot monitoring system. The Telluride might be the best value in the class for what you get. From the driving experience to the interior to the standard and available features, at every price point you just get a little bit extra, and in top trims you get a near-luxury experience. Overall, we are very impressed with the quality of the Telluride. You also get Kia's impressive 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty

Best Large Sedan - 2020 Toyota Avalon By Juanna Gray
Fewer automakers offer the large class sedan because consumers are increasingly gravitating to SUVs and highly capable midsize sedans. Toyota, however, is one brand that's still carrying the torch. The Toyota Avalon simultaneously exemplifies and upends the conventions of the class. This latest model has a V6 engine that delivers smooth acceleration. Though slightly larger than the Toyota Camry, the Avalon has acres of legroom for all occupants and a higher percentage of premium materials. The Avalon lends itself well to long road trips thanks to the supportive outboard seats and minimal wind noise. Toyota also brings performance into the picture. The Avalon, with nimble handling and quick steering, is surprisingly up to the challenge of zipping along a curvy road. There's even a new TRD model this year with a sport-tuned suspension. If you want an uncompromising blend of performance and comfort, consider the top Touring trim. It's equipped with adaptive dampers that soften the ride or sharpen handling at the press of a button — a rare feature for this type of vehicle. With a potent 301-horsepower V6 mated to a smooth-shifting transmission, the Avalon has power to get up and go. It is also pleasant to use in most scenarios, from long road trips and afternoon cruises to day-to-day commutes and short errands around town. Braking is consistent and never grabby, which lends to its comfort in daily use. The Avalon is surprising in its athleticism — its shockingly enjoyable handling and drivability. While not a sport sedan, this cruiser can handle twisty roads with relative ease for a vehicle of its size. Think about a mobile defensive end or tackle in football as opposed to an athletic linebacker. Comfort is a strength for the Avalon and is probably the primary reason you'd consider such a large sedan. All seating positions give you ample cushioning and support for long drives or short cruises. The leather upholstery is very soft and
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
gives the sensation that the Avalon is more upscale than its price suggests. The ride is cushioned and makes you feel shielded from harsh roads. The cabin is cozy due to the climate control's quick heating and cooling. While there is no rattling or shaking inside the cabin, road noise is present at all times. The Avalon's cabin is a nice place to be. It is roomy and userfriendly. There are even redundant key functions located on the steering wheel. Legroom is abundant, the driving position is superb due to its multitude and depth of adjustments, and visibility is great up front and modest to the sides and over the shoulder. Toyota's Entune system and its 9-inch touchscreen are surprisingly good. Apple CarPlay support makes things so much better. The display is bright and responds well to inputs, but Toyota tends to lock out more functions while you're driving than other carmakers. There's one USB port for data and four 2.1-amp power-only USBs — two up front and two in back. The front console also houses a wireless charging pad. The car's built-in voice controls are hit-ormiss — it's better at understanding radio commands than navigation commands. We had much more success using Siri via Apple CarPlay. While cargo capacity is average on paper, the Avalon works out to be more convenient compared to some others due to the wide trunk opening, broad floor and convenient loading height. You might be disappointed if you're the type who folds the rear seats to expand the space because there's a sizable step up to the folded seats. Inside, there are numerous small cubbies, plenty of cupholders, and a center console that's sizable and surprisingly deep. The door pockets are average, but there are enough other options that it's not a concern. The Avalon really shines when it comes to fitting child safety seats.

Best Large Truck - 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 By Ella Patterson
Ram redesigned its 1500 truck last year, and it continues to be a top-rated truck. All Ram 1500 trims come with excellent driving dynamics, generously appointed interiors, and a unique rear suspension for the class. With it, the Ram glides past competitors with a ride quality more commonly associated with cars. Truck duties are not a problem either — the Ram 1500 offers comparable maximum ratings for both towing and payload capacity. New this year is a diesel-powered turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 known as the EcoDiesel. It also allows for a stout maximum tow rating of 12,560 pounds. The cabin is another clear win for the Ram. Highlights include comfortable seats, high-quality materials, and an easy-touse touchscreen infotainment system. Move through the options list and the Ram 1500 really begins to shine. Higher trims offer even greater levels of luxury. And the truck has unmatched storage solutions from a large, configurable center console to spacious in-floor bins and locking compartments built into the side of its bed. There are no significant differences between the gasoline-powered 2020 Ram 1500 and our long-term Ram. Ram has a V8 engine and eight-speed transmission. They work so well together that we could recommend this truck on that basis alone. It's strong, and it's easy to drive in just about every situation. The same can largely be said for the newly reintroduced EcoDiesel powertrain — especially if you appreciate the pulling power of diesel torque. But there's much more to the Ram than solid powertrain choices. I was impressed with their steady steering, confident braking, and secure handling. Ram's decade-old decision to walk away from leaf springs and switch to a coil-spring rear suspension continues to pay dividends. We're surprised no one has followed its lead. Wind and road noise are minimal, particularly in higher trim levels. Even the rumbling V8 provides only a soothing GLOBALONEMAG.COM
soundtrack unless you decide to open it up. The Ram 1500 expertly soaks up varying road imperfections and does it without the rough ride you'd normally expect from a lightduty pickup. The front seats are nicely shaped to provide comfort and support over long distances. The rear bench has an agreeable backrest angle, and it reclines. The Ram 1500's has an effective climate control system, which offers rear center A/C vents even if you get three-across front seating. The Ram 1500 crew cab's interior is a pleasing place to spend time. The doors open wide to make it easy to get in, and all four doors have their own chunky and wellpositioned grab handles. For the driver, there are easy-toreach controls and a commanding view of the road. Passengers in any seat will find plenty of headroom, legroom, and shoulder room. The cabin is spacious, and the Ram has more rear legroom and foot clearance than competing trucks. Although the rearview mirror is a bit small, the Ram's large windows and clever hood design help with outward visibility overall. Tow ratings, particularly for the diesel, are stout for this class. With the V8 or the diesel engine, most of the Ram 1500's common configurations can pull more than 11,000 pounds. The optional RamBox locking bins built into the side of the bed are useful for storing tools or towing equipment. There's also an optional two-way tailgate that can open downward or like doors. Interior storage space is another area where the truck shines. Its center console is enormous and highly configurable. The Ram can be ordered with hidden compartment spaces in the rear floor, underneath the rear seats or in the back cushions themselves. The rear seat folds up as one piece or in a 60/40-split on higher trims. The interior build quality available here leaves the competition miles behind, and pricing isn't much different from what rival’s charge.

Best Crossover - 2020 Kia Niro EV By Ella Patterson
The 2020 Kia Niro EV is a fully electric version of, yes, Kia's Niro. Kia also sells the Niro as a regular hybrid as well as a plug-in hybrid, but the EV only uses electricity. For power, it uses a 64-kWh battery with a 201-horsepower electric motor that drives the front wheels. The result is both quick acceleration and an EPA-estimated range of 239 miles. That's not quite as much as rivals such as the Chevrolet Bolt or Tesla Model 3 are capable of, but it's still plenty for most EV drivers. There's more to the Niro EV than just some impressive numbers. You'll also like its roomy seating and impressive amount of technology and safety features. This is one of our top-ranked electric vehicles, and it's worth checking out. Niro EV test car accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. That's noticeably quicker than rival EVs such as the Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf, though the Tesla Model 3 is quicker still. Braking is smooth and consistent. The Niro offers partial one-pedal driving, but it won't bring you to a complete stop unless you hold the steering paddle. The steering is direct but doesn't translate much feedback from the road. When the Niro is pushed, the suspension keeps the car planted and composed. It's fun to drive this car quickly, though the eco-oriented tires provide only modest amounts of grip. We like the Niro's ride quality. It smooths out bumps in the road without being overly soft or bouncy. The front seats are well shaped and firm, but they don't offer many adjustments. The dual-zone climate control works quickly and evenly, and the rear air vents are a welcome feature for passengers.
emits a futuristic whirring sound that's required to help alert pedestrians. It fades away above 20 mph. Kia nailed the Niro's interior. The rear offers plenty of legroom and headroom and there's quite a bit of open space up front. It's also easy to get in and out of. The rear window is a bit small, which can hamper your view when backing up or trying to see what's behind you in traffic. The Niro EV is easy to see out of. All the controls are easy to find and use too. The Niro's infotainment system is functional and easy to use. There are EVspecific screens that show range, driving data and more, which is a welcome feature for eco-conscious drivers. Syncing a smartphone is easy, and the Niro quickly reconnects once you get back inside. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. There are one data and two charging USB ports and a wireless charging pad. The Niro comes standard with a full suite of advanced driver aids. I enjoyed the smooth and easy operation of the adaptive cruise control, especially in traffic. The Niro comes to total storage capacity. It is easy-to-load nature and rear seats that fold flat. Up front, you'll find a lot of places to store your small items inside the cabin. All four doors feature pockets and water bottle holders. The main cupholders are adjustable and can be folded away to provide another bin or room for larger water bottles. It’s easy to install child safety seats in the Niro EV thanks to the roomy rear seat and easily accessible seat anchors. Depending on your route and driving style, you'll probably be able to clear 250 miles without much trouble.
The Niro EV is very quiet with little wind, tire or road noise coming into the cabin. At low speeds, the car

Best Sportscar - 2020 Chevrolet Corvette By Ella Patterson
For 2020, the Corvette has undergone the most radical redesign in its 67-year history. Chevrolet's engineers decided a new midengine layout was the way to go for its inherent advantages in weight distribution. Risky? Yes. But the result is hugely impressive. In terms of performance, the Corvette equals or outshines cars costing twice to three times as much. The new 6.2-liter V8 and dual-clutch automatic transmission are a formidable combo on the track but offer plenty of oomph and smooth operation in nearly any condition. The 2020 Corvette also imparts more information about its handling balance and grip, thereby giving its driver more confidence in taking the car up to its handling limits. As with past Corvettes, the C8 is practical for both daily driving and long trips. There's space for the coupe's removable targa roof panel top in the rear, and the lack of an engine up front means there's a small frunk in the nose. The new interior has a sharp, driver-focused design and fine materials throughout. A Corvette convertible is on its way too. It's stupid fast, it looks exotic and it hammers home what the Chevy's sports car has always done: Give you maximum performance at a reasonable price. Even in a class full of impressive performance cars, the Corvette stands out. In Edmunds testing, using launch control rocketed our Z51 test car from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and cleared the quarter mile in 11.5 seconds at more than 120 mph. Both times are very quick. Braking performance is impressive, but that's largely down to the narrow front tires. We recorded panic stops from 60 mph in 105 feet, which is still a good number, and noted the Corvette's stability and excellent pedal feel. Steering and handling are both much improved. Skid pad testing showed the chassis' excellent
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
balance with an eye-opening 1.09g, which is a number you'd expect from much more expensive performance cars. Likewise, the new eight-speed automatic transmission impresses with its smooth and quick shifts. The new Corvette is one of the more comfortable cars in its class. The test car had the optional MagneRide adaptive suspension. We found that it offers excellent compliance over a variety of road surfaces and smooths out bumps that would likely upset other sports cars. Adding to the comfort is the relative lack of wind and engine noise, though tire noise can be prominent on rough road surfaces. The climate system provides good airflow from its stylish vents. Maybe just as striking as the exterior design, the Corvette's interior is certainly eye-catching. Getting in and out of the Corvette was a little difficult. This predicament is exacerbated in tight parking situations. But buyers will likely figure out a way and won't be too bothered. The compromised rear visibility will take some getting used to as well. Chevy added a camera-based rearview mirror display to help, but the blind spots created by the rear pillars are still significant. The Corvette benefits from Chevrolet's newest infotainment system. The graphics are crisp and modern, and the touchscreen's proximity to the driver makes it easy to operate. As small as the interior is, the optional 14-speaker Bose audio system manages to produce a decent soundstage with plenty of power. The front trunk can hold a couple of grocery bags, and the rear is big enough for two golf bags. Rear storage all but disappears, however, when you store the Corvette's removable roof panel in the trunk. Corvette returned 20.1 mpg, which is commendable given that some hard driving was done.

Best Small Hatchback - 2021 Hyundai Veloster By Ella Patterson
The 2021 Hyundai Veloster remains one of the most unique cars on sale today. It’s because not many cars come with three side doors. The answer would be one: the Veloster. It has an asymmetrical three-door setup with one door on the driver's side and two on the passengers. That quirky door arrangement improves the practicality of this small hatchback by providing better access to the rear seats compared to a regular coupe. It is fun and playful driving characteristics that you expect from a small performance coupe. The base 147-horsepower 2.0-liter engine doesn't exactly get the heart pumping and can feel strained just merging onto freeways. Thankfully, the optional turbocharged 1.6-liter engine (201 hp) makes the Veloster feel a lot sportier. Or if you want serious performance from a small car, look no further than the Veloster N In turns and corners, there's only a hint of body roll, and the R-Spec's high-performance tires help it instantly change directions. The R-Spec comes only with a manual transmission, but the dual-clutch automatic in other turbocharged Velosters responds quickly to paddle-shifted gear changes. The Veloster is sportier than most compact cars, and that means a fundamentally stiff suspension. Even so, the Veloster remains comfortable for driving around town or highway cruising. The ride is composed and stable, and the suspension takes the edge off larger bumps, but the car's short wheelbase makes it more sensitive to choppy roads. The R-Spec's seats are nicely shaped, offering ample support and side bolstering and plenty of adjustability. Some drivers will lament that the seats lack adjustable lumbar, but you can get this feature in Turbo and Turbo Ultimate models. The cabin can get noisy at highway speeds, especially when the car is equipped with highperformance tires. The Veloster's interior is intelligently designed and packaged. It makes good use of available space afforded
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
by the car's funky, asymmetrical styling. The long driver's door makes it tricky to get in or out in tight spaces, but shorter doors make it easier on the passenger side. There's surprisingly ample front and rear space inside the car, and most adults can sit in the rear seat without complaint, but limited headroom might annoy taller riders. Veloster is a driver's car, and the driving position is appropriately low and sporty. The controls are logically grouped and placed close at hand. Overall visibility is good Navigation is available with the Turbo Ultimate trim. It's a basic system but it's clear and easy to use. The Veloster comes with an array of USB and 12-volt charging and data connections, and some trims offer a wireless charging pad. Voice commands are limited to a handful of functions, but the system responds well, even to some more natural phrases. Driver aids are sprinkled throughout the lineup, but we learned they don't always respond accurately after experiencing some false emergency-braking episodes. The Veloster's trunk is spacious at 19.9 cubic feet, although it relies on a low load floor to create much of that space. As a result, you'll have to lift items somewhat high to clear the trunk opening. The cabin offers plenty of spaces to store drink bottles and personal items, including wide door pockets and a large center console. Rear passengers need to make do with cupholders and a small tray. The car seat anchors near the surface of the seats are clearly marked, but they're tucked between the cushions and offer no special access. The top tethers are inconveniently located on the trunk floor. This car is not the best one to choose if you're frequently installing and removing a car seat. Embracing Our Men
Understanding Men and Breakups No one ever said that love would be easy, and when we consider how different men and women truly are; it is amazing that relationships ever work at all. Those differences become especially clear in the middle of a breakup, which means that understanding how men process the loss of a relationship can be a complicated task. Men Have Less Support When in the midst of a breakup, men release a hormone called vasopressin that actually makes them view other men as less approachable, according to social neuroscientist Brian Alexander in the "Glamour" article “Why Breakups are Harder on Men." Women, on the other hand, naturally gravitate toward other women for support in crisis. So, while they are having their wounds tended to by friends and family members, men tend to become an island in their own grief. Their emotional outlets are limited, making coping with the breakup more difficult than others may realize. He’s More Likely to Disengage As far as coping mechanisms are concerned, men are more likely to distract themselves and avoid their feelings, explained clinical and health psychologist Melanie A. Greenberg in the "Psychology Today" article “The Neuroscience of Relationship Breakups.” Men may not always outwardly express their sadness over a breakup, but that does not mean they aren’t experiencing grief over the loss of that relationship. They are just more primed to bury those feelings and attempt to move forward without openly acknowledging that grief to others. Men Tend To Lose More People often assume that women are the ones who suffer the most in a breakup, a view possibly heightened by the fact that women are more likely to share outward emotional expressions of grief. However, men tend to have more of their emotional and practical needs met by a relationship, making breakups tougher on them than women because they feel as though they are losing their emotional "home". It is because of this loss that men are more likely than

women to experience physical health consequences as a result of losing a close partner, according to Alexander Men Focus on the Now Biologically, men tend to think in a more compartmentalized manner than women, according to biological anthropologist Helen Fisher, as quoted in "The New York Times" article, “A Young Man’s Lament: Love Hurts.” This means that while they experience a sense of loss over a broken relationship, men are more capable of thinking of the breakup in terms of the here and now. While women may be more concerned about long-term reproductive chances now that this relationship has not worked out, men may be more focused on short-term losses and concerned about things like whom they will now spend Friday nights with.01:1

Absent Fathers Effect On Sons Though it is difficult to say what effect the absence of any one man’s father had on him beyond what he tells you and what could be assumed by his current behaviors, studies do show that boys who were raised without fathers are at greater risk for academic-career failure and social maladjustment than those who are raised in two parent households. However, these findings are based on the assumptions that children raised in two-parent households are more likely to receive the financial support, guidance, love, and acceptance that would be expected in a traditional family, which is not always the case. Regardless of who meets these needs, children raised having their needs met are far better off than those who are raised in homes where one or more of these basic needs went unmet.
Financial Support Money provides not only the basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing, but also offers children opportunities and exposure to better quality social interaction not available to economically disadvantaged youth. When accounting for other factors, such as parental behavior, poverty accounts for up to 50 percent of children's academic, social, and behavioral problems. In 2012, more than 38 percent of families living in single-mother homes lived below the poverty line. That compared to less than 18 percent of families living with single dads and less than 9 percent of two-parent households. Adults raised in poverty get less schooling, achieve lower incomes and are far more likely to be poor themselves than individuals raised in non-poor homes.
Guidance and Supervision Most people believe that boys need male role models, and yet in 2012, a little over 27 percent of all family households with children under age 18 are single-mother households, up from 25 percent in 2007. While studies support the logical conclusion that children, particularly boys, from single-parent households are more likely to exhibit delinquent behavior due to a lack of supervision than do children of dual-parent households, there is some evidence that children of single-father households are actually more at risk for both a lack of supervision and delinquent behavior than are children of single-mother households. It is estimated that approximately 40 percent of juvenile delinquents continue to commit crimes into adulthood.
Love and Acceptance Regardless of racial, cultural, linguistic, geographic, and other such variations, parental acceptance has consistently been associated with psychological adjustment, whereas rejection tends to be associated with difficulties in maintaining future relationships, depression, and substance abuse. Furthermore, a father's love has been shown to be as important in normal development a sKASHA the mother's. PHOTO BY Single parents without social and emotional supports themselves -- especially if the parents are young and economically deprived -- appear universally to be at greatest risk for withdrawing love and affection from their children. 21 percent of adults' psychological wellbeing is accounted for by both paternal and maternal acceptance or rejection. Men who were rejected as children sometimes become adults who are fiercely independent to the point of excluding their partners, or overly dependent, seeking frequent reassurances that they are loved.
Loving a Man with an Absent Father While having grown up without a father may increase the risk of social, emotional, and financial difficulties that follow boys into adulthood, most boys eventually learn to cope and grow into well-adjusted men. It has also been shown that it is better to have been raised in a safe home where father wasn't present than to be in a home where conflict and antisocial behavior was an everyday norm. While no one can change what happened to them as children, men who had absent fathers can learn to cope by putting their rejection into context, realizing their own potential, and depersonalizing the events as being a result of their parents' failings and not their own. For women loving these men, a supportive relationship negates many earlier effects. GLOBALONEMAG.COM

Young Men - Older Women By Ella Patterson It’s no surprise that older women have jumped on the band wagon and started dating younger men. With all the available fish in the sea, there’s plenty around for everybody right? But why do younger men go for the older sophisticated lady instead of someone their own age? Older men have been dating years younger than themselves for centuries. As common as it is, we have a steady stereotype describing why younger women find themselves ultra-attracted to men double their age. It has been more broadly accepted and mainstream for some quite time. There have even been television shows based on this age gap dating concept, like “Million Dollar Match Maker” and “Baller Wives” etc. We have gathered research to find out just why a young man would opt for a much older woman. Here are the top 15 reasons why some younger men prefer older women. 15.IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY HONEY It may not shock you to learn that the younger generation of strong, healthy, good-looking guys also want financial security. And instead of necessarily providing that for themselves, they seek it out through a potential intimate relationship. Most older women have established themselves with a strong career, have put money away in a healthy retirement fund, and have a strong sense of financial responsibility paying their bills. A man may not be referred to as a Cougar, but can he be called a sugarbaby and have themselves a sugar mama? Absolutely! In fact, older women open to dating younger men half their age or more are happy finding someone who is full of energy and not jaded by love’s harsher side. So, for starters, one of the top reasons younger men date older women is for their bank roll and material possessions. 14. INTELLECTUAL CONVERSATIONALIST Younger men are looking for someone they can connect to and enjoy conversations with. Given that older women are more likely to have had more life experiences that enable them to have vast knowledge and a deeper understanding of world events. In addition, statistics show that the majority of women 30 or older hold a degree of higher education. Educated women are sophisticated, smart, and can hold a conversation about politics, community issues, positive media, religion, and are open minded to other’s perspectives. A woman with these qualities allow for a man to sit down with them and enjoy a meal with while having a conversation fueled by a sharp intellect. Men are highly attractive to a woman who have an intelligent opinion about topics other than what they drank the night before or unnecessary drama of younger generations. Similarly, younger women are more caught up in pointless and irrelevant experiences. An older woman has more interests in things that matter, which leads to deeper communication. 13.OLDER WOMEN KNOW WHAT THEY WANT Numerous young men appreciate a woman who is clear and focused on important things. Things that she is trying to accomplish that contribute to her full potential. We found that men perceive women younger than 30 have their priorities backwards. Essentially, that they really don’t have any priorities at all. Instead of meaningful and enriching goals, younger ladies are more worried about what their next Facebook post is going to be about or going shopping. But not older women, although they may enjoy shopping just like the next girl, they are focused on the larger scale of things. A mature woman knows what they want, and they have a plan to achieve these goals. They focus their energy on improving their lives and the lives of others. Men are naturally attracted to a drama-free partner who has focus and intention. Thus, leading to a healthier relationship based on positive enrichment and unlike the immature drama that the “20 somethings” have going on. 12.MIND BLOWING FREAKY TIME Yup! You already knew this one was going to make the top 15 reasons why men prefer older women. Younger men are known for a great sex drive than older men. Not just a large appetite for sex and intimacy but for mind-blowing interactions. After a woman turns 30 their sexual peak begins. They experience a bigger craving for sex from their partner. Additionally, these ladies are more open-
minded to trying new things in-between the sheets. Comparatively, younger generations are not experienced and are still figuring out what they truly like. However, they may not express their likes and dislikes for fear of offending their lover. Men all over the world have expressed that they appreciate intimacy with older women due to the fact that these women know precisely what they want. In turn, not embarrassed to tell their lovers what is needed to bring them pleasure. It takes the pressure off the man because he gets an exact road map and instruction manual for pleasing his partner. Not to mention, it’s better for both lovers because they can focus on pleasing each other without the anxiety related to performance. Instead, the older woman also doesn’t need to fake the big “O” and will more likely stay with their man. 11.ABILITY TO TEACH A YOUNG LAD NEW THINGS Some younger men prefer older women for the simple fact t they can learn so much from her. They can attribute to several life experiences. In the first place it can seem like such an adventure going steady with a woman in her prime. Secondly, they offer a different perspective on several different issues. And third, their influence helps a young man grow up quicker by learning how to lean on one another for support and love. Because a woman older than 30 will have had more experiences in life, she is more grounded and realistic about life. They aren’t as impulsive or reactive to situations that life throws their way. Thus, leading a man to mature levels. These special women have a way of seeing a man in a way that they do not see themselves as. Specifically, showing him the kind of man, he is and aspires to be. This kind of relationship motivates a man to achieve a higher potential. 10.HEAD GAMES ARE FOR CHILDREN Another terrific quality that older woman possess, and younger men seek, is that they don’t play head games. Younger ladies typically play too many games, cause confusion, and are too immature. The way mature woman carry themselves proves they know who they are. Knowing who you are is associated with stability. More often than younger gals, they have figured out who they are for the most part. Due to an older woman knowing precisely who they are, they aren’t shy about sharing exactly what they want. This makes for a well-rounded lady who doesn’t have time to play games. On the contrary, women in their twenties are too caught up in drama and manipulative behavior. They are known for playing head games and causing conflict in a relationship. Whereas nicely aged women are explicit when it comes to knowing what they want and don’t waste their time with silly games. 9.CALMER BEHAVIOUR THAT IS LESS HECTIC To some men, what attracts them to dating older women is the calmness that they have. The frenetic energy that most young ladies have can be adorable and enticing but these traits won’t attract all men. The hobbies and leisure activities of a calmer woman greatly differ from that of a hyper and excitable younger version. For instance, an older woman will enjoy gardening, crafting, painting, and/or pottery. In opposition, the majority of younger women prefer loud night clubs, sports pubs, and essentially need to be entertained with hyper-stimulating activities. Young men appreciate a slower pace lifestyle. Something that is relaxing and calm. A couple consisting of an older woman and younger man will go out on the town, but it isn’t a weekend norm. In fact, dating an older woman opens doors to various fun experiences where they can unwind. 8.A MOTHERLY RELATIONSHIP There are men out there who are in a relationship with someone older because they want to be taken care of. I am not referring to financial means this time. On the other hand, I am talking about emotional and mental types of support. Have you ever dated a man who treated you almost like you were his mother? You would cook for him, iron his clothes, and perhaps pick out his clothes and lay them out for him? These are all typical mommy syndrome behavior’s. Mommy syndrome is where a man needs and wants a woman to do EVERYTHING for him. I’m talking about everything except for wiping his own butt. For this reason, men like this will seek out dating older women. However, not all older women are going to put up with this. Similar to a younger woman. What all women of all ages have in common is that they desire someone who is independent. 7.OLDER WOMEN ARE INDEPENDENT WOMEN Because younger women have a need for a lot of attention a man may be turned off. Not that he doesn’t want to give attention to someone he is dating but the amount of attention and neediness differs a great deal between older ladies and younger ones. Women 18 to approximately 30 tend to be very clingy and need constant attention. But women 30 and older aren’t behaving this way. In fact, they are confident in themselves and don’t need the reassurance all the time. They still enjoy a man’s attention while also being able to focus on other important things other than constant contact.

6.THEY HAVE READY MADE FAMILIES When a man cannot have children of his own, he may seek out a woman who already has kiddos. The majority of older women, on the younger end of the spectrum, have had children. Most likely they have been married before in their younger years. This kind of man doesn’t mind that the kids came from a previous relationship. Be that as it may, he will love and accept these youngsters as his own. If he respects and loves the mother, he will definitely feel the same for her offspring. Besides, there aren’t very many women getting up in age who do not have children. So, the mindset of men seeking an older woman is that a relationship like that comes with a ready-made family for him. 5.CHILDREN HAVE LEFT THE NEST On the contrary, on the older end of the age spectrum, a woman’s children will be grown and have already left the nest. This allows a man to be with an older woman without the responsibility of raising her children. It may sound harsh, but not all men are prepared to take on a family. They simply want to date their girlfriend and not worry about children. These men probably have no desire to have children. With this intention, they prefer older women because these woman cannot have children anymore. Also, they already had their children in their earlier years and do not wish to have more. In turn, both the men and women in this scenario can focus on each other and only on themselves. Selfish as it may sound but when children are involved, the attention of the mother is divided. 4.NO DRAMA FOR THE MAMA As expressed above, older women don’t play games. To elaborate further, they also don’t have as many rules for their men. A lady in her 40’s is not going to get upset if their boyfriend wants guy time. He is free to hang with his buddies and go out on the weekends without having to worry about getting chewed out. No man enjoys getting nagged at for anything. Especially, wanting to hang with his crew. When a guy dates an older woman, he has more freedom. Younger women typically want a man’s full attention to be on them. They are not comfortable with their boyfriend going out. More so, they have insecurities whereas an older woman doesn’t. Older ladies appreciate time apart. 3.OLD SCHOOL MANNERS Back in the day it was proper to never fart or belch in front of your significant other. It was actually considered very rude to do so. These days it seems as though it’s “cute” to fart in front of your partner. But some men really don’t appreciate it. On top of that, using other proper manners goes far. Older women were raised differently. They were taught to say “please” and “thank you”. They were raised to be ladies. Men prefer older generations because of the appropriate manners that an older woman will showcase. Given these points, older women have terrific etiquette. 2.LOOKING TO MOOCH OFF Unfortunately, there are men out there who are just looking for a free ride. These moochers are looking for a place to live, rent free. Nice hot meals, a vehicle to drive, and perhaps a spending allowance is all it takes to please this guy. He will set his eyes on an older honey who could be his sugar-mama. He is not looking to take care of anyone but himself. Additionally, these men will have high hopes for all the goodies. Expensive toys, bling, clothes, trips, and everything else he could ever wish for – he gets. This kind of man dates older women because younger women typically do not have the same access to resources. This guy wants to be lazy and not work or pay grown-up expenses. Therefore, he prefers dating older women. 1.BETTY CROCKER WATCH OUT A key quality of an older woman is that she also learned how to cook. And I mean really cook! This gal can whip up anything from scratch that tastes super delicious. Have you heard the term, “To get to a man’s heart you have to go through his tummy”? Well, it pertains to preparing delectable meals and deserts. Although what seems to be a dying domestic norm, generally most older women still cook. Younger ladies cook less and less for numerous reasons. Either way, men who prefer older women are looking for a lady who can tear it up in the kitchen. They appreciate the thought of service that comes with cooking for someone else. And they love good wholesome dining. The only kind that you can get home-made. Betty Crocker ain’t got anything on an older women who can cook from scratch. This easy potty-training method puts the child in control. Child-led potty training is great for stubborn children like my 2-year-old!

Potty Training Your 2-Year-Old Made Easy By Lindsey A. Potty training at 2 years old is not always simple! Everyone wants to know how to potty train the easy way, but there are endless theories and techniques. This is going to sound absolutely insane…but my 2-year-old daughter potty trained herself. One day she said to me, “Mama, I no wear diapers. I go on potty now.” We stared blankly at each other for a few moments and I said: Ok…let’s go on the potty! I kid you not, for the first few weeks we had almost NO accidents. And the accidents we did have were when she couldn’t get undressed fast enough and she tinkled a little in her undies. So, you’re probably wondering, how did you get her ready for potty training at 2 years old? You can’t potty train a child that isn’t ready to potty train. Instead, you’re just going to cause frustration and power struggles. You may even make your child scared of the potty! Signs your child is ready for potty training • Your child can identify when they have to pee or poop • Your child tells you when they have soiled their diaper • Keeping a dry diaper for long periods of time • Showing interest in the toilet • Showing interest in other people using the toilet • Talking about the potty • Your child does not want to wear diapers anymore • Your child can tell you when they are going pee or poop *Your child may display all or just some of these traits to show they are ready to potty train Starting the potty-training conversation We started the conversations about the potty at about 18 months old, and when she was ready, she went for it! When she was around 18 months old, she started expressing interest in the potty. She told me when she was going to go in her diaper, would tell me if it were “tinkles” or “poo poo,” and would promptly want her diaper changed. We gave it a try for a few days, and she ultimately wasn’t ready. I took her to Target and let her pick out some Moana underwear, a potty seat, and a treat for when she went potty. Here and there she’d ask to go potty, but I never ever put pressure on her. I left it completely in her control. Every single time I’d change her diaper I’d say: Ellie, if you ever want to go on the potty, you just have to let me know. Once you start going on the potty, you don’t have to wear a diaper anymore. You can wear your Moana undies! Let me know if you ever want to try! She would always respond, “Ok, mama!” and go on her way. Then one day, she simply said, “mama, I no wear diapers. I go on potty now.” That was it, folks! She decided she was ready, and we got started. This was the easiest, no tears way to prepare my child for potty training and put her in control of her own body. What can you do if your child isn’t ready to potty train? If your child isn’t ready yet, don’t force it! Everyone is ready at their own time. You can encourage readiness by: GLOBALONEMAG.COM
• Talking about using the toilet when you go (example: “I’m going to the bathroom now because I have to pee! I don’t wear a diaper, so I need to sit on the toilet to go pee.”) • Talking about it when you change your child’s diaper (example: “I see you went poop! I go poop on the potty. If you want to try pooping on the potty next time, tell me before you have to go and you can go on the potty, too!” • Making elimination seem normal and acceptable • Reading books about potty training
• • • •
Here are some great books bout potty training! Reading to your child about potty training reinforces that it’s normal and an OK thing to try. If you can find a potty-training book with a character your child loves, that’s even better! A Potty For Me! By Karen Katz, We personally used this book. It’s a lift-the-flap book and discusses how you feel when you need to go and use the potty! Dino Potty With a cute dinosaur, this rhyming book talks about exactly what to expect when going potty. P is for Potty (Sesame Street) Any Elmo lovers out there? This life-the-flap book will interest your little Elmo-loving pottytrainer. Daniel’s Potty Time (Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood) Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is one of my favorite children’s shows. This book follows along with the episode to make potty training easy.
Why I chose Child-led potty training Simply put, I want my daughter to feel like she is in control of her own body. She is a strong-willed child, so I need to respect her personality when raising her! I did not set a timer for 30 minutes and make her sit, I did not make her sit on one potty or another… I let her lead the way entirely. This is an unconventional potty-training method
- 86 - WINTER 2021
I know this is against a lot of “common” potty training methods. You’ll read over and over again to set a timer for 30 minutes, offer lots of praise and reward, let them run around without a diaper on, etc. That method works GREAT for many people. But if you are trying to potty train a stubborn, independent child like my Ellie, that probably will turn into a series of meltdowns and power struggles. Giving your child control over their body is a great tool to teach them, and it can start with potty training. And I think that’s why it was so easy! If she tells me she has to go, I trust her. Sometimes she insists she has to go just minutes after she’s already gone, but I let her try anyways. And I also trust her if she says she doesn’t have to go. If I noticed that she hadn’t gone potty in a while, I’d suggest she go by saying something like: Before we do that activity, why don’t we try sitting on the potty! While your lunch is heating up, let’s go tinkles. Are you starting to feel like you have to go potty?? Make sure you let someone know if you feel like you have to use the potty. Most of the time she would agree to go, but if she flat-out refused to, I would say, “OK, but you may have to go potty soon. Let me know when you’re ready.” Does this mean we have accidents sometimes? Sure! But if I dragged her to the toilet against her will, she would not go. I tried it a few times, and it was apparent that she was not going to use the toilet if it wasn’t on her terms Potty training tip: give your child choices when potty training! Potty training can feel very overwhelming to children. What comes naturally to us as adults is actually a huge transition for toddlers. Giving choices reinforces that your child has control! It’s also one of my favorite ways to encourage my children to eat healthy meals. We have three bathrooms in our house, and we let her pick out a super special potty seat! When it’s time to go potty, we say “which potty do you want to use?!” and she will excitedly pick one! We also made a special trip to the best place on Earth (Target, obviously) to pick out “fancy underwear.” She now gets to pick between Moana, Frozen, assorted Disney princesses, and unicorns or mermaid undies every morning. I always say, “wow, these are really great underwear! We’ll have to be really careful not to have an accident In these undies!” What kind of potty seat is best for potty training? Potty seats that go over the toilet seat are great because they get your child used to the big potty, while still making it child sized. Not only does it make for easier cleanup, but it will be easier to transition using public restrooms or the toilet without the seat when the time comes. Some toddlers are afraid of using the big potty! A smaller potty that sits on the floor like this may be beneficial. Toddlers love to express their autonomy at this age, and by giving choices you are acknowledging that they are capable of making decisions! It makes a huge difference in their attitude about potty training. How I handled accidents when potty training my 2-year-old I try very hard not to embarrass or shame my daughter. Most of our accidents happened out of the house (one time at my in-laws she had THREE accidents!!) and it can be really embarrassing. Trying very hard to keep my cool, I’d bring her into the bathroom quietly
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
and tell her that she can always tell an adult if she has to go potty, and we’re going to have to go clean up her mess. Whenever she has accidents, we change back into underwear (not a diaper! Diapers are not punishment!) and I would hand her a towel to clean the mess. When she was finished, I would tell her thank you and then finish cleaning the mess. Accidents and potty-training regressions are normal Try not to get overwhelmed or worked up! Potty training regressions and accidents are normal! The most important thing: don’t yell or scream and try not to make a huge deal of it! You don’t want your child to start having accidents as an easy way to get attention, or as a way to assert their authority over yours. I will say, we rarely had accidents. If we did have accidents, it was because we were out of our normal environment where she didn’t want to take a break because she was having so much fun. For the most part, she knew to go on the potty or tell someone to take her! I am confident in her ability to use the potty, and it projects onto her as well! What to do if your child is scared of the potty Potty training is a big deal to toddlers. Here are some tips to help! Acknowledge their fears Just like adults, toddlers want to be heard. Acknowledge that potty training can seem scary, but that once you get used to it, it isn’t so scary after all! Role Play: Does your child have a favorite stuffed animal or doll? Practice potty training with a favorite toy! You can start by entering your child’s imaginative space and discuss using the potty with the toy. Ask your child to help you bring the toy to the potty! After your toy is finished, offer lots of praise and talk with your child about how the toy used the potty. Bring your child to the bathroom with you It may seem a bit awkward, but toddlers want to model adult behavior. Bring your child with you to the bathroom so they can see how it’s done! Try a small training potty A cute little training potty can help if the big toilet is too intimidating. It looks like an adult toilet which can help your little one get used to the look and feel of a potty, but it’s the perfect size for a toddler! It has a built-in splash guard to prevent any spillage as your little one learns to sit on the potty. It’s small enough that your child can get on and off it independently (and feeling independent and proud is a huge thing at this age!) Small toilets like these are great to keep in the car, too! This is one of my favorite mom hacks. There will inevitably come a time when you are out somewhere and don’t have immediate access to the bathroom – keep a potty in the car and you won’t get stuck with wet undies! Remember, potty training is a learned skill, and it takes a lot of practice! Offer a lot of praise, don’t make a huge stink about accidents, and within no time it will be mastered. Pro tip: put a diaper in the bottom of the pot to catch the pee and throw it in the garbage when you’re done. Easy peasy! Good luck, and happy toilet training!

Avoiding Power Struggles With Your Toddler By Ella Patterson - Published Author and Lindsey A
Do you have a toddler who is frequently crying, throwing tantrums, and engaging in power struggles? If so, you are not alone. There are many reasons that two-year-old’s engage in power struggles and tantrums. Toddlers are becoming more independent but still have to rely on their parents for practically everything. They want to do things by themselves and then get frustrated when they can’t. As they test their own limits, they are learning what they can get away with, and what they cannot. And toddlers have limited language; when this language fails them, they resort to emotional outbursts. What are parents to do? Children feel most secure when there are clear limits that revolve around health and safety. Although toddlers can scream when they don’t get what they want, they deeply crave structure and rules to keep them safe. Parents must be in charge. But finding the right way to set, and enforce, limits without having power struggles is not an easy thing. Here are some tips that may help: 1. Be flexible. When setting and enforcing limits don’t become too rigid. Be willing to bend a little. For example, if your toddler does not want to leave the park right away, give her an extra five minutes. Maybe even give two more minutes after that. 2. Make sure you can enforce your limit. If you are not certain you can make your child comply, think twice before setting your limit. Look into the future and envision what you will do if your child refuses. Enforcement may involve picking your child up and putting him in his car seat, despite the tantrum. When you know how to make your child comply, your voice and tone will carry more weight. 3. Pick your battles. There are many things that you cannot let your toddler do for health and safety reasons. But other things may not be worth a fight. Examine why you are setting the limit and remember “less is more”. The less battles, the less your child gets into the habit of having power struggles. 4. Only have a few rules. Two-year-old’s cannot grasp a long list of rules, so keep it simple and stick to the big ones: Don’t hurt others. Don’t do things that are unsafe. And follow a routine and schedule that keeps you healthy. 5. Listen and explain. When your child resists, listen to what he wants (or does not want). Then repeat this back to him in your own words. Finally explain why you have

set your limit. When toddlers feel understood they are a lot more accommodating. 6. Create an environment that decreases power struggles. If toys are scattered everywhere, a child often feels out of control. A neat, organized home, with less toys, can reduce power struggles. Try it… 7. Provide opportunities to be powerful. Are there chores that your toddler can do to help out? Give lots of praise. A two-year old wants to feel important, powerful, and useful. 8. Give advance warnings. Tantrums and struggles often happen during transitions. If they are too abrupt, they can cause a meltdown. I like to give plenty of warnings that things are about to change. For example: “We are having lunch in ten minutes get ready to finish your puzzle”. 9. Look for root causes. It is helpful to know why your toddler is having a tantrum. Is she hungry, tired, cold, or bored? This helps you have more compassion and also lets you solve the problem faster. I hope these are helpful. Good luck and remember your child will soon outgrow this stage.

Get the Best Car Loan Rate Despite a Low Credit Score Article from http://www.consumerreports.org
If you’ve ever financed the purchase of a car or a refrigerator, you know your credit score is important to getting a good deal. A good credit score can get you a lower interest rate, while a poor credit score—or having no credit—pushes you into the subprime category. This indicates a higher risk to the lender, so you have to pay more, adding significant finance costs on top of the purchase price. Anywhere from a fifth to a quarter of all auto loans fall in the subprime category, according to analysts at TrueCar, a major online automotive marketplace that is partnered with Consumer Reports. That’s more than 5 million car loans per year. But your credit rating may not be the only factor driving up the rate on your car loan. If you finance through the car dealer, using a lending option that they broker rather than a bank or credit union, the rate is often higher because the dealership takes a cut for acting as the middleman. Further, a recent study shows that car-loan rates for Black or Hispanic consumers can be higher because of bias and weak government oversight. But there are ways to keep the rate on your car loan as low as possible. Although Consumer Reports and other auto loan experts recommend improving your credit rating before applying for a loan, real-life circumstances don't always allow enough time to do that. Perhaps the best way to get a lower rate is to see what your bank or credit union is offering instead of the car dealer. “Before you go to the dealership, shop around and compare interest rates for yourself, so you know what's available based on your credit and income,” says Chuck Bell, programs director for CR’s advocacy division. “Many lenders will give you a direct loan, so you don't have to work through the dealership to get their often higher-priced financing," Bell says. "You can apply for loans to banks or credit unions, and some lenders will prequalify you for the amount you are seeking with a soft credit check, which won't hurt your credit score.” In general, those with excellent credit will get the best rates. People with poor credit ratings or no credit—those who haven’t had to make payments on credit cards and other monthly bills lately—will pay the highest rates. Rates are marked up on subprime GLOBALONEMAG.COM
loans because the borrower is more likely to default on the loan. “Your score is designed to be a predictor of your risk of paying back what you borrow,” says Alain Nana-Sinkam, vice president of strategic initiatives at TrueCar. “It looks at your history of paying bills, credit cards, auto, home and personal loans on time, and uses that information to predict your future behavior and therefore your risk.” A low credit score means you won’t qualify for the catchy zero percent offers highlighted in ads for new cars, and it means that you could pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars more in interest over the life of the loan. According to Experian one of the major credit reporting agencies, credit scores are broken down as follows: • Excellent: 800-850 This category includes 21 percent of borrowers and gets the best rates. • Very Good: 740-799 A quarter of borrowers fall into this category, which promises better-thanaverage interest rates from lenders. • Good: 670-739 This segment covers 21 percent of borrowers, and Experian says only 8 percent of the group is likely to become seriously delinquent on payments. • Fair: 580-669 This category is considered subprime and comprises 17 percent of borrowers. • Poor: 300-579 Only 16 percent of borrowers are in the deep subprime category, which carries the likelihood of extra fees, deposits, or loan application rejections. “The sad reality is that if you're a subprime buyer, you're going to pay more interest than someone with a good credit score,” says Matt DeLorenzo, managing editor at Kelley Blue Book.
- 90 - WINTER 2021
• Know your credit score. Experian recommends checking your credit score at least once per year as a matter of course. That way, you’ll know where you stand so that you can manage expectations regarding loan eligibility and be aware of what you have to do to bring up your score. You should also look for errors in your credit report, which can affect your score, Bell says. “Luckily, there is no shortage of sites you can visit online to get a free credit score," says Nana-Sinkam. “All the major credit bureaus offer one free credit report annually.” • If there’s time, improve your score. A credit score can be improved in a number of ways, mostly by paying bills on time. Always pay credit card and other bills when they’re due, even if it’s only the minimum payment. This is good advice for any loan—the more you pay up front, the less you’ll pay in the long run. • Bring a bigger down payment. “Having a bigger down payment reduces the amount of loan you need, and a smaller loan means less interest,” says Amy Wang, associate director of Credit Karma Auto. “A down payment can be in the form of cash, a trade-in vehicle, or a combination of the two.” • Get prequalified. Much like knowing your credit score, getting prequalified for a loan from your bank helps manage expectations about what’s possible. • Talk to your financial institution and see what’s available. Nana-Sinkam says that before you get prequalified, it’s a good idea to review your credit report to see if there are any disputable items. Every little bit helps, and just a few corrections can get you a better rate. Getting approved for a loan before you go to buy a car gives you yet another bargaining chip. • “Have a rate you can take to the dealer to see if they can beat it,” says DeLorenzo. “The dealers may have access to programs that can get subprime borrowers a better rate.” • See what the dealer's manufacturer is offering. If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, manufacturers such as Chrysler, Hyundai, and Kia often have programs for subprime borrowers, says DeLorenzo. You have to dig around on their websites to see what’s out there, and keep in mind that this type of deal is going to be found on less expensive cars. “Most of the subprime lending you'll see is on entry-level and economy cars—the bottom end of the product lineup,” he says. “I don't think any manufacturer wants to leverage a subprime buyer into a high-margin vehicle like a luxury car or a pickup truck.”
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
• Consider buying a used vehicle. In general, used cars cost less money, and the value of a used car is more likely to stay stable for longer than a new car, which will depreciate rapidly. That means used-car transactions pose less risk for the lender, and there is a higher likelihood that a subprime borrower will be approved for a loan. “In our experience, most subprime buyers shop the used-car market because they're looking for vehicles at a lower price point,” says Wang. • Report suspected discrimination. Racial discrimination in auto lending is nothing new. Ally Financial, which services loans for several automakers, settled a discrimination lawsuit for $80 million only a few years ago. An academic report published in December found that Black and Hispanic borrowers were 1.5 percent less likely to be approved for a loan and that they pay 0.7 percent higher interest rates, regardless of their credit. The study found that although bank loans—which are federally regulated—were much less likely to be discriminatory, more than 80,000 Black and Hispanic borrowers were denied loans they would have been approved for had they been white. Loans offered by dealers are known as indirect loans, because the dealer arranges financing through a third-party company. But the dealer doesn’t have to share loan offers that come back from the lender with the borrower. This is how they markup loans for profit, and as outlined in last year’s study, how dealers were able to charge minority borrowers more. A federal rule enacted in 2013 placed auto lending under the guidance of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and reduced discriminatory auto lending by 60 percent. But the rule was overturned by Congress several months before the 2018 midterm election. “Unlike mortgage lenders, who report each application through the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, auto lenders do not systematically report application or loan level data, making it difficult for regulators to monitor lenders for discriminatory practices,” says Erik Mayer, one of the authors of the study. “We find the strongest evidence of discrimination in the Deep South, the Ohio River Valley, and parts of the Southwest. Our estimates of discrimination in auto lending correlate strongly with state-level measures of the prevalence of racial biases.” If you suspect discriminatory lending, Mayer suggests filing a report with the CFPB (consumer finance.gov) or with the Federal Trade Commission.

Has 'Free' Coronavirus Testing Become a Surprise Medical Bill COVID-19 tests should cost nothing if you have health Insurance, but some are being billed thousands of dollars. After Stephanie Nickolas learned that a co-worker’s husband tested positive for COVID-19, she decided to get tested to see if she had the disease or antibodies that might reveal whether she ever had the infection. Nickolas, 45, went to CityMD, an urgent care chain near where she lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., which she found listed as a free testing site through New York City’s government website. Nickolas, a high school science teacher, was relieved when both tests came back negative. But about a month later, Nickolas was surprised when she got a $300 bill from CityMD. She went to her insurer’s website to look up the claim and saw that the company had already paid CityMD. When she contacted CityMD to ask about the bill, she was told it was a mistake and to ignore it. “I was so mad when I got the bill,” says Nickolas, who is teaching summer school remotely. “The government tells everyone to get tested and has kept saying it was no cost. I did the right thing and made sure I was healthy to be out in public. I felt like CityMD was using the pandemic to make a bunch of money.” CityMD didn’t respond to our request to comment on Nickolas’ billing problem, but on its website, it says it is not collecting copays for COVID-19 testing and does not bill for lab testing.
GLOBALONEMAG.COM
Billing problems like Nickolas the one had aren’t supposed to happen. Congress mandated free COVID-19 testing as part of two coronavirus aid packages signed into law in March–the Families First Coronavirus Response Act and the Corona Aid Relief, and Economic Security Act. Those laws require health insurers to cover medically appropriate COVID-19 and antibody testing without any cost to consumers. According to the law, that means no copay, coinsurance, or need to meet a deductible as well as no charge for the testing itself or the related doctor’s appointment. Congress also set aside a pool of money to cover people who are uninsured. But because of loopholes in the law, mistakes by insurers and healthcare providers and confusion about what is cover d, some consumers like Stephanie Nickolas are getting hit with surprise medical bills for COVID-19 testing that can be hundreds or thousands of dollars. Nickolas says she worries that some people won’t realize coronavirus testing is free or just won’t have time to fight the bill. The problem is likely to get worse as COVID-19 cases rise sharply in parts of the U.S. and the push for testing grows, says Karen Pollitz, a senior fellow at the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) who has co-authored several reports on the financial impact of the pandemic. It’s yet another healthcare issue that hits communities of color harder. That’s because these groups account for a higher share of cases and deaths relative to their population, in particular in states experiencing a spike in coronavirus infections and deaths. A recent Kff analysis forecast that as the COVID-19 pandemic intensifies in the South and West, it’s likely to affect Hispanic and Black people especially, because they are also at higher risk of experiencing more serious symptoms and have more barriers to accessing healthcare.

The Cost of Getting Tested. The charges for COVID-19 testing can be substantial. While a recent analysis by KFF of the two largest hospitals in every state and Washington, D.C., found that about half of healthcare providers that posted list prices for COVID-19 tests charge $100 to $199, 19
In those cases, you’ll have to pay up front, then submit the bill to your insurer to get reimbursed. You get evaluated for COVID-19 but don’t get a test. Not everyone who goes in for a COVID-19 test will necessarily get the test. A healthcare provider might order a test for other health problems first, such as pneumonia or the flu, and if one of those is positive, a COVID-19 test might not be needed, which could leave you with a bill for the tests you did get. Kaiser reported one case in which a woman who had COVID-19-like symptoms got a bill after going to the emergency room for a test but was charged for the visit even though the hospital didn’t have any testing kits available. You don’t have comprehensive insurance. Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance plans must adhere to federal laws on free coronavirus testing. But if you have short term health insurance, which doesn’t meet regulations set by the Affordable Care Act for minimum essential coverage, federal requirements for insurance to cover COVID-19 and antibody tests don’t apply. You don’t have any insurance. People without health insurance don’t have the same guarantee as those with coverage to get free testing, though Congress did try to address that. Under the coronavirus relief laws passed earlier this year, the government set up the Provider Relief Fund. Instead of billing you, hospitals or healthcare providers who provide testing services to the uninsured can submit claims to the fund. But not all hospitals or doctors are aware of the fund or want to go through the paperwork hassle to apply for reimbursement, says Pinder from ClearHealthCosts. “It’s easier to bill you,” Pinder says. In that case, you should appeal the bill.
percent charged $200 or more. Meanwhile, of the hospitals that posted prices for antibody tests, almost 60 percent of those tests cost $50 to $149 while 16 percent were $150 or more. What Can Trigger a Surprise Medical Bill. There are a number of situations in which COVID-19 and antibody testing can trigger a medical bill, says Pollitz at the KFF. Here are circumstances to watch out for. You go out of network. If you go to a doctor or hospital not in your insurance company’s network for your test, insurers are supposed to pay the full price the provider charges. But in a loophole in the law, the KFF found that if the price isn’t publicly posted and the insurer and healthcare provider can’t agree on a price for the testing, you could end up with a bill for what the insurer won’t cover. Also be aware that not all healthcare providers that offer tests take insurance.

Your employer requires a test. Federal law applies only to individual diagnostic testing–such as when you seek treatment for COVID-19-like symptoms or think you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. But another category of testing, known as surveillance testing, which may be done to assess how prevalent the disease is in a particular area or by employers who want to screen workers returning to the office, isn’t covered under the federal law. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, insurers are not required to pay for testing for general public health assessments or workplace screening for COVID-19. Employers who do require workers to get periodic testing can pay for the tests, but their health insurer plan doesn’t have to cover that cost, which can lead to confusion over who is responsible for the bill. You get treatment for COVID-19. While the doctor visit and test are covered, there are no federal laws that require health insurance companies to cover the cost of treatment related to COVID-19 health problems if you are insured. If you end up testing positive for the coronavirus and get treatment or are admitted to a hospital, you can expect to be charged for your care, and have to pay your normal deductibles and copays and, if your provider is not in your network, possibly higher out-of-network fees, too.

Poet Amanda Gorman on 'Full-Circle' During Inauguration - How It Connects Her to Biden
Amanda S. C. Gorman is an American poet and activist. Her work focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, race, and marginalization, as well as the African diaspora. Gorman was the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. She published the poetry book The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough in 2015. In 2021, she delivered her poem "The Hill We Climb" at the inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden. Her inauguration poem generated international acclaim, stimulated her two books to reach best-seller status, and earned her a professional management contract. With more than 50 years between them and vastly different backgrounds, Amanda Gorman and new President Joe Biden may not, at first consideration, seem to have much in common. But in fact, the 22-year-old — who read her poem "The Hill We Climb" at Biden's inauguration on Wednesday — told Robin Roberts Thursday on Good Morning America that they actually have a significant connection: their speech impediments. While "President Biden has been super open about his stutter," Gorman told Roberts, 60, that her own "speech impediment wasn't a stutter, but it was dropping several letters that I just could not say for years." "Most specifically the 'R' sound, which it would take until probably I was 20 to say — meaning that I couldn't say words like 'poetry' or even 'Gorman,' which is my last name," she continued. "I had to really work at it and practice to get to where I am today." Joe Biden Makes Symbolic Changes to Oval Office Reflecting Goals as President
Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. is an American politician who is the 46th and current president of the United States since 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, Biden served as the 47th vice president during the Obama administration from 2009 to 2017. He represented Delaware in the United States Senate from 1973 to 2009. Not long after he was inaugurated, President Donald Trump had a portrait of the populist and controversial President Andrew Jackson placed prominently in the Oval Office, looking down as he held photo ops, signed sweeping executive orders and sparred with reporters. But that painting of Jackson has been replaced. Now, next to President Joe Biden as he sits at the Resolute desk is a portrait of one of America's founders, Benjamin Franklin. Other symbolic changes Biden has made include adding busts of labor organizer and Latino civil rights activist Cesar Chavez, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, and former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, as well as portraits of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. It was important for President Biden to walk into an Oval that looked like America and started to show the landscape of who he is going to be as president," Ashley Williams, the deputy director of Oval Office operations, told the Washington Post. The busts of King and Kennedy, who Biden on the campaign trail called his political heroes, are in his direct view on either side of the Oval Office fireplace. The Chavez bust sits among photos of Biden’s family, including one of his beloved late son, Beau, on a table behind him.

The idea that the cannabis industry is a maledriven market is going up in smoke (pun most definitely intended). Thanks to Miley Cyrus, Broad City’s Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, and Rihanna, pot-smoking women are becoming more and more visible. The stereotype that only men smoke cannabis is one that needs to be dismantled. It inaccurately reflects market reality and attempts to box women into sexist social roles, further perpetuating harmful myths about cannabis. In the spirit of getting rid of these stereotypes and celebrating the increased visibility of pot-smoking women, here are the top reasons why marijuana could truly be useful for women: 1. Helps Treat Reproductive Health Issues According to the Endocannabinoid Deficiency Foundation, cannabis can be an effective way to treat endometriosis and other female reproductive health issues. 2. The Food & Wine Guide to Culinary Cannabis By Amanda M. Faison
In the last decade, marijuana has moved into the mainstream and onto the dinner table. As more chefs and entrepreneurs get in on the green rush, we're left to wonder: How do you eat and drink cannabis?
On a recent Friday night, I got together with 180 strangers to get stoned. We convened at a swank event space at the invitation of 99th Floor, a cannabis dinner party pop-up company helmed by Jeepney chef Miguel Trinidad. "We want to destigmatize cannabis through the universal language of food," Trinidad said, before sending out a tour de force of cannabis cooking: Weed permeated the stock for the beef shank served in a gingery broth with spaetzle and fry bread; its flower was shaved over a carpaccio of charred, cannabis-infused octopus; terpenes, nonpsychoactive aromatic chemical compounds from the cannabis plant, provided floral notes to the roasted fennel that accompanied lamb chops that had been cooked, sous vide, in infused fat. (And my fears aside, nothing tasted like bong water. It was all delicious.) As each course was served, Trinidad called attention to where THC (the compound responsible for marijuana's psychoactive effects) was incorporated—in a smoky eggplant puree with the carpaccio, in a Bordelaise sauce on the lamb—allowing us to moderate our intake somewhat. It was good that I'd talked to Trinidad about all of this ahead of time, because somewhere between the second and third courses, my eyeballs started feeling really weird, and my notes from the rest of the dinner were limited to: "Feeling great. Mirage burps. Womp womp." Trinidad and his business partner, Doug Cohen, compare their approach to cannabis as analogous to a fine-dining meal with wine pairings. "The goal is not to have you hammered," says Cohen. "It's a journey of the senses, an experience."

99th Floor is one of many new businesses working to meet the new cannabis consumer. Thanks to the growing social acceptance and legalization of cannabis, the number of adults trying it for the first time is skyrocketing. And an awful lot of people aren't smoking it—they are eating and drinking it. According to studies by Arcview Market Research and BDS Analytics, which studies cannabis consumption, the top growth category is consumable cannabis. For the most part, that means edibles, which is a section of the cannabis market that has evolved far past the pot brownie; it also includes THC- and CBD-infused drinks, even ice cream. And across the nation, chefs and diners are exploring the versatility of the cannabis plant at the table in ways Jerry Garcia could never have imagined: infusing foods, pairing inhaled marijuana with food, and mining the spectrum of flavor profiles and distinct psychoactive effects of different cannabis strains. At 99th Floor, I was lucky to be in the hands of a chef who was conservative with the dosing, so I left the evening pleasantly buzzed and not too high to find my way home. But it's the wild west when it comes to culinary cannabis, and for every carefully dosed dinner party series, there's somebody eating too many THC-laced gummies and having a terrible night. Wondering how to navigate this new world?

Put simply, marijuana and hemp are cousins in the cannabis family. The primary difference is that marijuana contains more tetra-hydrocannabinol, or THC, which has psychoactive effects on the human brain. Hemp, on the other hand, has extremely low levels of THC (0.3% or less) and is nonintoxicating. Both contain scores of cannabinoids (including cannabidiol, or CBD) and terpenes, which are aromatic chemical compounds that many believe can aid relaxation, cause changes in mood, and decrease inflammation. Most CBD on the market is derived from hemp and has no psychoactive effects. Without guidelines from the FDA (which is still exploring how to regulate CBD), it's critical that consumers do their homework before purchasing CBD products. Ashlae Warner of SuperGood, a CBD company based in Denver, recommends going to a company's website and looking for the Certificate of Analysis (COA), or third-party testing results that show the quantity of cannabinoids in the product. If the company won't share one, move on. When it comes to THC edibles, states where recreational marijuana is legal, including California, Colorado, Massachusetts, and Nevada, require testing for potency and contaminants by a third-party laboratory—but standards vary. A good sign that the product you're considering is legit. Prominent dosing information and testing by an accredited lab right where you can see it: on the label or on the website.
The First-Ever Legal Cannabis Restaurant At the Original Cannabis Cafe in Los Angeles, guests can openly smoke pot and eat infused edibles while snacking on vegan nachos and sticky tamarind wings. Its opening represents the culmination of three-and-a-half years of legal hoop-jumping and bureaucratic negotiating. Guests order food and drinks from one menu, and pre-rolled joints, loose marijuana flower, edibles, and cannabis concentrates from another. Bongs and glass pipes are available for rent. Due to California law, cannabis and alcohol are prohibited from being sold at the same venue, so all drinks are nonalcoholic, though some of them contain cannabis. Nothing on the food menu is infused, and guests can't take home any leftover cannabis. The idea is to enjoy imbibing before and during your meal, as you would with a glass of wine. That last point is particularly important to chef Andrea Drummer. The soft-spoken 47-year-old wants to destigmatize cannabis consumption in the U.S. "There's no better way to normalize [cannabis] than by combining it with something we do every day: eat," Drummer says. "It's two communal experiences at once." She hopes that the restaurant and other operations like it will help change both the cultural perception of cannabis and the legal status quo. Despite more states legalizing, cannabis arrests are rising, and according to the ACLU, black users are nearly four times more likely to be arrested than white, despite roughly equal usage. The cafe is attempting to counter some of that disparity by offering a Social Equity and Reparative Justice Program, which gives employment priority to recently pardoned nonviolent cannabis offenders reentering society. Drummer is outspoken on this point. "Why is it that I get to earn a living by doing something that's normal, while other people are doing life in prison?" she asks. —Jamie Feldmar

Edibles Grow Up The most common edible purchased and consumed today is the gummy. "Far and away," says Greg Shoenfeld, vice president of operations at BDS Analytics, a cannabis analytics company based in Boulder, Colorado. "And these are sophisticated confectioneries." That, in a microcosm, is the forward motion of the ingestible market, the cannabis industry's fastest-growing sector, which pulled in $712 million from January 2019 to June 2019, an increase of 27.5% from the previous year. The new face of edibles is beautiful packaging, refined flavors, and quality ingredients. The sugared gummy pearls of Portland, Oregon–based Grön are a shining example, as is Denver-based Coda Signature's coffee and doughnuts chocolate bar, dusted just so with cinnamon sugar. "There was an opening for wonderful flavors, quality ingredients, and bringing about nostalgia," says Lauren Gockley, director of edibles for Coda Signature, who spent two years working with chocolate and pastry under Thomas Keller at Per Se in New York City. In August 2019, Coda also launched a line of highend fruit chews à la pâte de fruits in flavors such as strawberry rhubarb and, Gockley's favorite, coconut lime with makrut lime– infused sugar. The high from an edible is very different (and has a delayed onset) than the one from inhaling marijuana. "Don't fear the edible; just start slow," says Laurie Wolf, founder of Laurie + MaryJane, an influential cannabis edibles company in Portland, Oregon.
Edibles often contain 5 to 10 milligrams of THC, but if you're new to cannabis, start by microdosing with 1 or 2 milligrams and work up from there. Unlike inhaled marijuana, it can take over an hour to feel an edible's effects—and the high lasts much longer. So divide a 5milligram gummy into quarters and eat one piece, or look for smaller doses.
Store Them Safely Edibles look just like regular treats. To avoid accidental intoxication (especially by children), store edibles in clearly marked bags (such as those from kushsupplyco.com) and way out of kids' reach.

Cannabis at the Table Pairings vs. Infusions If an event mentions "pairings," that means inhaled marijuana will be matched up with courses throughout the meal. There may be a "budtender." At an infused dinner, THC is in the food. How to "Taste" a Joint There's a three-step tasting method for inhaled cannabis, says Rachel Burkons of Altered Plates. First, nose the unlit marijuana to GLOBALONEMAG.COM
take in the aroma of the terpenes. Then, do a "dry pull," or inhale without lighting, to get the flavor on your palate. Finally, once it's lit, notice the mouthfeel of the smoke. "It's like a wine tasting—nose, aroma, palate, and finish," Burkons says. If You Overdo It Drink water and take a walk outside. Some chefs recommend taking some CBD. "When people get too high, they get stressed, and CBD helps them relax and gain focus," says David Yusefzadeh. Are cannabis-infused drinks the future of the beverage industry? Drinks offer an easy pathway to cannabis consumption. "The experience is something that's familiar," says Niccolo Aieta, founder and chief technology officer of Colorado-based Spherex, which makes Phyx, a THC-infused sparkling water. "I have a drink [because] I want to celebrate or party or relax." The earliest adopters of cannabis drinks have been small companies, but big beverage isn't far behind: Last year, Constellation Brands (whose holdings include Modelo Negra and Corona) invested $4 billion in a Canadian marijuana company, and Heavenly Rx, a hempand CBD-focused wellness company, announced a substantial investment in Jones Soda in July 2019. Like alcohol, infused drinks are digested and absorbed into the bloodstream relatively quickly. The onset of the high can be faster than with edibles, and imbibers can more easily quantify how much they're drinking (e.g., a can of sparkling water) and pull back as needed. Beer Buzz Cannabis and hops have similar chemical properties, and in Portland, Oregon, Coalition Brewing celebrates their synergy with Two Flowers, a CBD-infused IPA (coalitionbrewing.com). In partnership with Canna Craft in Santa Rosa, California, Lagunitas Brewing Company makes Hi-Fi Hops, an IPA-inspired sparkling beverage infused with THC. (With 10 milligrams of THC or 5 milligrams each of THC and CBD; sold at dispensaries in California and Colorado.) If You Like LaCroix A bottle of Phyx sparkling water contains 2.5 milligrams each of THC and CBD. "You get the feeling of two glasses of wine—calm, relaxed," says marketing director Kelly Calvillo (wearespherex.com). Soda Pot Seattle-based Olala's lemon-lime citrus cannabis-infused soda is reminiscent of Squirt. Pick your dose: from 10 milligrams of THC to an obliterative 100 (enjoyolala.com). Sprig's CBD-infused seltzer line ships nationwide and comes in citrus, tea, and melon flavors (drinksprig.com). Cannabis Cocktails Using nanotechnology that renders fat-soluble cannabinoids more water soluble, The Tinley Beverage Company out of Los Angeles created an amaretto-esque almond and apricot THC-infused "liqueur" called Almond Cask. Also look for their bottled takes on classic cocktails: the margarita-ish Stone Daisy and Moscow Mule–riffing High Horse (drinktinley.com). On the Horizon The Whole Plant Lumen makes cold-pressed hemp shots from a minimally processed source. It's the closest you can get to eating raw hemp leaves (drinklumen.com). Weed Somms The Trichome Institute teaches weed somms, or entrepreneurs, to identify terpenes, pinpointing each plant's psychoactive and medicinal properties (trichomeinstitute.com). Better Classification Marijuana was once categorized two ways: indica, broad leaf, was thought to be sedating; sativa, narrow leaf, stimulating. The industry now sees it on a spectrum, emphasizing a strain's effects, like "happy" or "calm." And expect more nuanced labeling: There's talk of mapping the plant's taxonomy and its strains to help determine which terpenes and cannabinoids work best for each individual. Weed Vs. Wine "Wine country is weed country," says Jamie Evans, founder of The Herb Somm, a cannabis lifestyle brand in the San Francisco Bay Area and author of the forthcoming book The Ultimate Guide to CBD. With a similar agricultural focus and emphasis on terroir, Evans says, "It makes sense for both industries to come together to collaborate." There are those who agree, as the rise of canna-tourism and wine-and-weed tours cropping up in destinations like Sonoma County attest. But there are just as many wine growers and vintners who see the cannabis industry as a danger to their livelihood. Because cannabis and wine are farmed in many of the same places, the new crop has been the source of some tension in both industries, which compete for laborers, real estate, and customers. A Tribute to Terroir Winemaker Francis Ford Coppola teamed up with sustainable cannabis farmers the Humboldt Brothers for The Grower's Series, a bottle-shaped tin containing matches, a pipe, rolling papers, three one-gram samples of cannabis flower, and information about each strain's terroir. Each year the flower will change according to the grower and the harvest, just like wine vintages. Pairing Weed & Wine It's common knowledge that marijuana and food go well together. What may not be as commonly understood is the way premium marijuana strains can complement fine wines, too. You don't have to be a wine sommelier or cannabis aficionado to find the perfect strain of cannabis to compliment your glass of vino. In fact, finding the perfect weed-to-wine pairing might be as simple as consulting your local dispensary or liquor store to discover the taste or flavor profile of your selection.
Pairing marijuana and wine based on taste Taste is one of our five senses, perceived by sensors on the tongue called taste buds. Taste buds are able to distinguish between six different taste profiles including sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami (meaty) and fatty (like butter or cream). If you can figure out which of these are most prominent in either your wine choice or bud choice, you can pick the other based on complementary (often opposite) taste profiles. Chances are you'll be pleased with the results! People seem to prefer pairing things that balance taste and texture. This explains why red wine is common-pair for steak. The astringent (sharp and bitter) taste of the dry wine counteracts the greasy texture of the meat. Taking this into account, if you'd like to find the perfect wine and weed pairing based on taste profile, consider which taste is most prominent in either your wine or your weed and find the opposing taste profile in the other. For example, if you prefer bold, red wines which tend to be very dry (because most of the sugar has been fermented), the perfect pair would be something sweet like the Jellybean or Strawberry Cough strains. Conversely, sweet wines like Rieslings or Moscato’s pair well with earthy strains like White Rhino or Headband.
Pairing wine and weed based on flavor Flavor, on the other hand, is much more complex. Unlike taste, which is a basic sensory perception, flavor encompasses multiple senses. It is a combination of taste, texture, sight, smell and (sometimes) sound, to create a unique (highly subjective) experience. Pairing wine and weed based on flavor will therefore be very subjective, too, but the process can be made simpler by matching the most prominent flavors in each. For example, when pairing cannabis with Shiraz (which commonly features the flavors of black pepper and other spices), a good pair might include either a strain of White Widow or Super Lemon Haze which will complement the pepper notes of the wine. Other examples of wine and weed pairings based on flavor include the following:
Red wine pairings • Zinfandel + Strawberry Haze or Blueberry: Strawberry Haze feature berry flavors that work well with Zinfandel's sweet, almost "jelly-like" flavor. Hints of spice from this potent wine will counteract the hard-hitting punch of these energetic strains nicely. • Sangiovese + Church OG or Himalayan Gold: Church OG features a distinct tobacco flavor which is also characteristic of a Sangiovese wine from Tuscany. Other common flavors associated with this bold red wine include black cherry and tea which complement the sweet yet spicy flavors of these strains as well.

• Amarone + Sensi Star or Alien Dog: Sensi Star and Alien Dawg are very bitter strains that complement the slightly nutty taste of an Amarone wine. Hailed as one of the best wines in Italy, Amarone features a full body and prominent "tears" or "legs" which are characteristic of its high alcohol content. Its smoky, bitter chocolate flavor complements the earthy flavor of these strains quite well. • Cabernet Sauvignon + Golden Goat or Berry OG: These strains feature oak flavors that work well against the sweet, peppery flavor of Cabernet Sauvignon. The sweet flavor of these hybrid strains may also help bring out hints of vanilla or mint in your Cab. White wine pairings
• Chardonnay + Lemon Haze or Agent Orange: These strains are both good choices for pairing with a Chardonnay because they feature a sweet flavor with a sour aftertaste. Both strains are very uplifting (though the Lemon Haze is more so) which will work well with Chardonnay's thick body and high alcohol content. • Sauvignon Blanc + Mango or Amnesia Haze: Sauvignon Blanc often features a very sweet, almost tropical flavor which makes it a good choice to pair with either Mango or Amnesia Haze. Together, these substances will create an uplifting effect to go with their sweet flavors and strong acidic finish. • Moscato + Grapefruit or Girl Scout Cookies: Moscato wines always feature a prominent fruity flavor with a slight musky aroma. Grapefruit or Girl Scout Cookies would therefore pair nicely with this dessert wine because of their complementary flavors, light body and nice buzz. • Riesling + Hollywood OG or Rocklock: These strains compliment a Riesling wine because of the characteristic sweet apple flavors in each. Like the wine, the sweet (and often sour) flavor of these strains (coupled with a relaxing body buzz) can make for the perfect end to a lovely dinner party.

What Happens When You Mix Alcohol and Weed? When it comes to drugs, alcohol and weed are among the most commonly used substances. But what really happens when they team up? Occasionally mixing alcohol and weed — also known as crossfading — likely won’t lead to major health problems. But there are a lot of variables to consider, including which one you use first and how you consume them. If you aren’t careful, the duo can lead to a case of the spins or a green out, two reactions that can turn a fun night out into a nauseated night in. It’s also important to remember that people can have very different reactions to the same mix of alcohol and weed. If you’re out in a group, one person’s reaction might be very different than yours. If you drink alcohol before using weed? Drinking before using weed can intensify weed’s effects. This is because alcohol increases the absorption of weed’s main psychoactive ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This generally results in a stronger high. While this might be nice for some folks, it can cause others to green out. This refers to a range of unpleasant physical symptoms that can result from a strong high. Symptoms of a green out include: • sweating • dizziness • nausea • vomiting Alcohol before weed: Proceed with caution Drinking alcohol before using weed can ramp up the effects of THC. If you’re a seasoned pro, this might not be a huge deal. But if you’re sensitive to weed or don’t have much experience using it, it’s best to avoid mixing the two. If you do, move slowly and be sure to listen to your body.
Breaking down the research Turns out, you might not need much alcohol to change the way your body absorbs THC. In a 2015 study, 19 participants drank either a placebo or small amount of alcohol. Ten minutes later, they used a vaporizer to inhale either a low or a high dose of THC. The researchers found significantly higher peak THC levels among participants who had alcohol versus those who had a placebo. This was true for both low and high doses of THC. However, this study was pretty small, making it hard to draw any firm conclusions. Plus, a similar (but equally small) 2010 study Trusted Source found that alcohol consumption didn’t have much of an effect on THC concentrations. What happens when you use weed before drinking? While there’s some research around the effects of drinking alcohol before using weed, there isn’t much about the opposite GLOBALONEMAG.COM
approach. The studies that do exist are old and mostly inconclusive. For example, a 1992 study Trusted Source had 15 participants smoke a placebo, a high dose of THC, or a low dose of THC on three occasions. On each occasion, they’d rank a different dose of alcohol, including a placebo, as a low dose or a high dose. Weed appeared to slow down the rise of blood alcohol levels after consuming a high dose of alcohol. But a 1993 letter to the editor Trusted Source questioned this result. If using weed does indeed slow the absorption of alcohol, it might also delay feelings of drunkenness. This might seem like a good thing, but it makes it harder to know how impaired you really are. For example, you might feel like you’re good to drive, but your blood alcohol level may be well over the legal limit. Weed before alcohol: Assume you’ve had an extra drink or two Using weed before drinking alcohol may minimize the effects of alcohol. This means you might be tipsier than you feel, increasing your risk for becoming overly intoxicated. If you use weed before drinking, pay extra attention to how much you’ve had to drink. To err on the side of caution, assume you’ve had a bit more to drink than you actually have, or aim to drink less than you usually would without using weed.
So, there aren’t any major risks? It’s hard to say. There’s isn’t a ton of high-quality research on the topic. Still, there’s some evidence to suggest that regularly combining alcohol and weed may have some concerning effects over time. Higher risk of dependence A 2017 review of existing studies notes that people who use alcohol and weed together tend to consume more of both. This - 106 - WINTER 2021
can increase your risk for developing a dependence on alcohol, weed, or both. Decreased cognitive function A study from 2011Trusted Source evaluated performance on cognitive tasks among 21 heavy weed users who had consumed alcohol. Those who consumed just alcohol had worse cognitive functioning than those who only consumed THC. Those who combined the two had reduced cognitive performance than those who only consumed alcohol. Over the long term, combining alcohol and weed may be associated with decreased cognitive function and changes in brain structures, such as the hippocampus. Impaired driving • A number of recent studies also focus on how combining weed and alcohol affects your driving. In a 2013 study Trusted Source, 80 people participated in six testing sessions. In each session, participants consumed a different combination of placebo, low, and moderate doses of THC and alcohol. Then they completed a driving simulation. • The researchers reported that combining THC and alcohol consistently impaired driving performance, with worse performance during nighttime simulations. • Adding alcohol to a low dose of THC impaired driving simulator scores by 21 percent. Adding alcohol to a high dose of THC impaired driving simulator scores by 17 percent. • The big takeaway? Don’t drive after using marijuana or drinking alcohol. Period. Other things to consider When mixing weed and alcohol, there are a lot of other variables to consider in addition to which one you use first. These include: • your tolerance to either substance • the type and strength of the alcohol • whether you smoke, vape, or take edibles • the time interval between taking each substance • whether you also use other substances, including tobacco or caffeine • whether you take medication The safest bet is to avoid using weed and alcohol together. But if you do decide to mix the two, start slow and keep track of how much you’re consuming of each. Keep a running tab in your phone, if you have to. Remember, consuming weed and alcohol together can make you feel either more or less intoxicated than you would if you were using just one or the other. If you take medication, talk to your doctor before using weed, alcohol, or both. They may weaken the effectiveness of your medication or increase your risk for certain side effects.

How to handle a bad reaction If you’ve mixed weed and alcohol and are having a bad reaction, it’s probably because alcohol seems to make the high from using weed stronger. The resulting unpleasantness is casually known as a green out. This can happen any time you’ve consumed to much weed — with or without alcohol. Signs of a green out can include: • shivering • chills • sweating • rapid heart rate • lightheadedness • stomach problems • nausea and vomiting • paranoia • anxiety
How to handle a green out Whether you’re trying to keep still in a spinning room or breaking out in a clammy sweat, these tips can help you make it through: • Stay calm. When it comes to bad reactions, patience is key. Your feelings will go away in time. If possible, find something, such as music, to focus on other than your discomfort. • Sit or lie down. If you feel dizzy, find a quiet place to rest until you feel better. If possible, ask a friend to help you get home. • Eat or drink to boost your blood sugar. A bit of food or a sugary drink can help relieve dizziness. Try something hearty, like soup broth. If you don’t have any on hand, juice will do. • Stay hydrated. Both alcohol and weed can leave you feeling dehydrated. That can lead to dry mouth, headaches, and dizziness. Drink water to put your body back on track. • Squeeze a lemon. Lemons contain a chemical compound that may decrease Trusted Source the effects of THC in the brain. Adding lemon juice or zest to some water might help when you’re feeling too high. • Smell crushed peppercorns. Similarly, peppercorns contain a compound that some say helps when you’re greening out. To take advantage, crush or grind a handful of peppercorns, then take a long inhale. Just don’t get too close. You don’t want to actually get the pepper in your nose. • Talk to someone. If you can, get a trusted friend to keep you company. They can help you stay calm and pass the time.
When to get help Usually, a bad reaction to mixing weed and alcohol will pass within a few hours. You may even wake up with some lingering effects the next day. But if you’ve been drinking a lot, it might be hard to tell the difference between a green out and alcohol poisoning, which can be life-threatening if not treated.
