It is heartening to know that an increasing number of ‘macro’ and large companies are finally taking stock of the relevance, importance and the need to support and encourage Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Qatar’s largest Logistics Services Provider (LSP) is a great case in point. The GWC Group has had a meteoric rise since its inception in 2004. Now it is payback time for the community. In the third of its annual ‘The GWC Forum—Fostering Legacy’ 2023 series held at the Al Wadi MGallery Hotel in the Musheireb district of the Qatari capital Doha on 8 and 9 November, the company made ‘Empowering MSMEs in the Digital Era’ the showpiece of its focus and strategy for the future. Our Publisher Jason Verhoven and I flew to Doha-Qatar to witness the twoday spectacle and to hear top company officials including Ranjeev Menon, Group CEO, reinforce and reiterate the company’s commitment to enable and equip MSMEs make their mark and grow their businesses. A noble act indeed! Our cover story for this edition revolves around the rapidly evolving healthcare logistics sector in the aftermath of the pandemic. Hellmann Calipar Healthcare Logistics (HCHL) has made an extraordinary mark in this growing industry vertical and so we touched base with the top two company professionals—Ana Mansurova, Managing Director, HCHL and Salam Sinno, Healthcare Industry Expert, (SS) Strategic Sales Director–IMEA, Hellmann Healthcare Logistics, for their valuable insights in this field. Elsewhere in this edition, we highlight a case study for industry titan SSI Schaefer. In March 2022, leading Saudi Arabian Company Nahdi Medical Company (Nahdi) launched its first automated pharmaceutical distribution centre, IMDAD, located in Jeddah Second Industrial City as part of developing its core capabilities to support the company’s strategy. We examine the SSI Schaefer-Nahdi interface. As far as commercial vehicles go, we report on the launch of IVECO’s T-Way in the Sultanate of Oman and the USPs and powerful attributes of the Mercedes-Benz flagship Econic Truck series. Continuing with case studies, we also highlight the Slimstock—Bidfood partnership, turning the spotlight on how companies can adopt and espouse technologies to gain a competitive edge. Add to this our regular repertoire of the latest news, topical features, profiles, business analyses, commentaries, professional contributions, Opinion-Editorials, and useful content all of which are well encapsulated and meticulously curated to make for stimulating reading! Middle East region continues to be at the forefront of innovations and development ranging from worldclass infrastructure to progressive legislations. The most notable example is in the Healthcare sector where the implementation of Track & Trace regulations for the pharmaceutical sector, aimed at securing supply chains, is turning the industry on its head.

T

he pandemic and changing worldwide dynamics and unstable geopolitical landscapes have shown level of unpredictability of the current world and the importance and necessities of resilient supply chains. To this end, Global Supply Chain interviewed the tag team of Anna Mansurova and Salam Sinno both from Hellmann Worldwide Logistics to gain valuable insights into how the healthcare logistics address has advanced post pandemic According to Dubai, UAE-based Anna Mansourova Managing Director, Hellmann Calipar Healthcare Logistics, there is a continuing trend of Pharmaceutical and Medical Device customers investing in the Distribution Hubs in the UAE, addressing needs to secure product supplies, decouple risks and improve responsiveness to the market.

The following are the transcripts of the interview with Anna Mansurova. Global Supply Chain (GSC): It has been a considerable while since we last spoke in May 2021. It will be great to hear what Hellmann Calipar Healthcare Logistics has been performing in the past two years. Bring us to current on developments at the present time.

6 DECEMBER 2023

Anna Mansurova (AM): Before we dive into it, let’s provide a quick refresher to our readers on Hellmann Calipar Healthcare Logistics. I feel good to reconnect and talk about our modern developments. Firstly, Hellmann Calipar Healthcare Logistics (HCHL) is a joint venture between Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, the largest family-owned global freight forwarding company globally and Calipar Integrated Services, an affiliate of the Parekh Group, a leading 3PL services provider in the healthcare logistics sector in India. It’s a partnership that is deeply rooted in family values. Our journey started in 2011 and today, HCHL is a leading Healthcare distribution center and partner of choice for over 30 multinational Healthcare customers for their supplies into GCC, Levant, Africa and greater region. Our services include warehousing, logistics, value added services, all enabled by digital. We are a solution driven organization with a clear customer focus. Leveraging our industry expertise and consultative approach, we deliver tailored and customized solutions to customer needs. Healthcare is one of the top three verticals for Hellmann and represents more than 18% of our global revenues. We support the vertical in all product solutions, airfreight, seafreight, contract logistics and road. This reflects well for our region where we have also made strategic asset investments and strategic partnerships in the Middle East to add additional value to

our customers’ supply chain. GSC: Can you share some insights into the current landscape of healthcare logistics in the region? How has Hellmann Calipar Dubai adapted to the unique challenges and opportunities in this sector? AM: Pioneering countries in the Middle East being United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia with further countries expected to follow soon. In the UAE, implementation of the national track & trace system–Tatmeen (Assurance in Arabic), has taken an ecosystem approach, where designed processes considered prospectives of various supply chain stakeholders. This has translated into practical processes, followed by very well thought-through implementation. Addressing this industry need, HCHL invested in aggregation capabilities, systems, processes and licenses to support pharmaceutical companies in their compliance to Track & Trace regulations for NHRA (Bahrain), SFDA (Saudi Arabia) and Tatmeen (UAE) Hubs. Hellmann has been offering these services since 2021, constantly evolving and improving the scope and scale of our operations. GSC: The healthcare logistics industry is constantly evolving. What are the latest challenges and trends you see impacting the healthcare supply chain, and how is Hellmann-Calipar addressing them to ensure efficient and

reliable services for your clients? AM: With evolving needs, processes, responses, solutions, regulations and oversight, HCHL continues to invest in infrastructure, people and systems to offer the required capacity and services to our customers. It is important to continue innovating. Next to earlier explained track & trace capabilities, Hellmann is working on predictive analytics solutions and transport optimization projects, leveraging existing ecosystems of partners. It is also important to remember the significance of strengthening the core, HCHL added AEO, WHO GDP compliant and ISO 14001:2015 certification status for our Healthcare UAE operations. GSC: Sustainability is a growing concern in the logistics industry. What sustainability initiatives or plans has Hellmann-Calipar Dubai implemented to reduce its environmental footprint while delivering healthcare logistics services? AM: Sustainability is one of the key pillars of Hellmann strategy. Our prime focus is on the reduction of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, where key initiatives are within the design and operations of our warehouses. Examples include efficient cooling, lightning and MHE (material handling equipment) systems, digitalization of earlier paper-based processes, instilling culture of sustainability across the organization, living diversity.

DECEMBER 2023 7

HELLMANN CALIPAR HEALTHCARE LOGISTICS (HCHL)

For example, HCHL employs number of female colleagues in our warehouses which is still quite uncommon in our region. Addressing scope 3, requires an ecosystem approach, working with our vendors and customers within the framework of the Avoidance–Reduction–Compensation triangle. Customer consulting on efficient transport networks is an example of the avoidance approach. This is further supported by monitoring (number of smart visibility solutions available) and reporting to optimize and reduce. For non-avoidable emissions, Hellmann offers offsetting projects as a compensation approach. Hellmann understands its crucial role in driving the

change and is taking an active leadership position in driving ESG goals. GSC: What are your respective perspectives and vision for HCHL going forward for the short and long terms? AM: Short term horizon for HCHL team is working on delivering two critical projects – facility expansion and supporting pharmaceutical companies with compliance to UAE Tatmeen regulations. Our long-term vision remains to continue strengthen our position in the Healthcare logistics market and towards our customers as an innovative, reliable and trustful partner. Offering caring customer experience and global logistics excellence with family-owned spirit creating sustainable value.

Global Supply Chain also exclusively interviewed Salam Sinno, Healthcare Industry Expert, (SS) Strategic Sales Director–IMEA, Hellmann Healthcare Logistics, for his professional take on the industry in this segment.

GSC: How important and significant is the Healthcare component for Hellmann Worldwide Logistics? Salam Sinno—SS: The healthcare component is highly significant for Hellmann Worldwide Logistics due to the specialized requirements, stringent regulations, and unique demands of the healthcare industry.

GSC: How are you currently performing; how is 2023 looking and how does that compare with say 2022 and what is your prognosis for the remainder of this year and 2024? SS: Healthcare is an ever-evolving industry that constantly requires innovative solutions to meet the growing customer expectations. For Hellmann, the healthcare vertical has been experiencing consistent growth year on year, and this is expected to grow, particularly in this region. To keep up with this expanding demand and maintain its competitive edge, Hellmann has been actively investing in its warehousing infrastructure, transportation network, technology driven solutions and sustainability programs.

characteristics and requirements: Regulatory Compliance: Healthcare and life sciences logistics are subject to stringent regulations governing the transportation, storage, and handling of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other healthcare products. Compliance with local and international regulations such as Good Distribution Practices (GDP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). These regulations are more rigorous and strictly enforced compared to other industries. Product Efficacy: Many healthcare products, such as vaccines, biologics, and other medications, are highly sensitive to external factors such as temperature and humidity. Maintaining specific conditions during transportation and storage require strict temperature-controlled environments to preserve the product efficacy and safety. This level of sensitivity is not as prevalent in most other industrial sectors. Time Sensitivity: Healthcare logistics involve time-critical shipments where delays can impact the availability of the products in the market. Access to efficient and reliable transportation networks to ensure timely delivery is crucial. Strong Partnerships: Healthcare logistics involves collaboration among various stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, carriers, customs agencies, and packaging providers. Building strong partnerships and collaborations to ensure seamless coordination is essential in this sector. Quality: Quality control requirements in healthcare logistics are rigorous. Accurate record-keeping, proper labeling, and adherence to operational processes are essential to meet regulatory standards. These unique characteristics differentiate healthcare-life sciences logistics from other industries, emphasizing the need for specialized expertise, infrastructure, and tailored logistics solutions to meet the sector’s specific demands.

GSC: How is the healthcare-life sciences logistics sector different from other industrial sectors? SS: The healthcare-life sciences logistics sector differs significantly from other industrial sectors due to several unique

GSC: What are your expansion plans in the region? SS: Hellmann has its own setup in the Middle East within Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and Oman. So, we already have a good network, especially in UAE

Hellmann Worldwide Logistics offers specialized and compliant transportation and warehousing solutions for time and temperature sensitive products, medical devices, life-saving drugs, and complex pharmaceuticals, ensuring high-level integrity and safety of the products throughout the supply chain. Going forward we see a higher trend for principals to continue to increase the volume they store in the market as well as principals who do not have their own hub setups to start. Notably, due to the growing population in our region and strong investments from the governments. For 2024 Hellmann anticipates continuous growth projections in response to the current and future demands of healthcare customers. This strategic approach helps Hellmann stay ahead in the market, positioned as the leading logistics partner of choice within the healthcare industry. Sustainability activities will also increase as Governments agree to more key sustainability activities; there will be an increase in solution support to help guide our customers in reducing their own carbon footprint as well as supporting in offsetting activities.

and Saudi Arabia where we have strong Warehouse solutions to support our customers. Egypt whilst has a currency devaluation ongoing is still an important market which we are very much interested to grow more in healthcare. In the UAE we have commenced a new JV with ATS to create a specialized Road Solutions JV as HellmannATS Road Solutions. This will further expand into healthcare solutions in 2024. We will as be expanding our existing healthcare storage facility in the freezone looking at the increasing demand from multinational companies for setting up a regional distribution hub in the UAE. This expansion underscores Hellmann’s proactive approach to capitalize on the increasing demand for healthcare products storage and distribution in the region. By investing in infrastructure expansion, we aim to strengthen our position as a leading provider in logistics and distribution solutions tailored to the specific needs of the healthcare industry. GSC: What opportunities do you foresee for the company going forward? SS: Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, together with ATS in the UAE, has established a specialized joint venture, HellmannATS Road Solutions. Through this powerful partnership Hellmann expands its road logistics business in the Middle East enhancing the range of services that already includes the segments airfreight, sea-freight, customs brokerage and contract logistics since entering the market in 1999. With ATS, Hellmann joined forces with a major road transportation provider in the UAE market, gaining access to an impressive fleet of more than 600 vehicles operating in the region. Under the terms of the joint venture, HellmannATS Road Solutions will exclusively handle all road transport operations for Hellmann in the UAE. The establishment of the joint venture with ATS marks a significant milestone in broadening our road solutions across the region. The venture will serve the needs of our healthcare customers through the implementation of a GDP-compliant transport fleet.

12 DECEMBER 2023

T Ranjeev Menon, GWC

“This is an exciting time for MSMEs in Qatar. As we work towards Qatar National Vision 2030, we are seeing strong growth and expansion as the country prioritises the development of the private sector”.

he recently concluded annual milestone GWC Forum 2023 was held over two days—8 and 9 November at the AlWadi MGallery Hotel in the Musheireb district of Doha, in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) and QNB (Qatar National Bank) Group. Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) was the research partner, while Oxford Business Group was the intelligence partner, and Q-Live was the gift partner. Ahead of the forum, GWC and Qatar Development Bank (QDB) announced a cooperation agreement with which will see the entities work together to support MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) in Qatar. Global Supply Chain had a ringside view of this mega event and proceedings and was able to report first-hand, up close and personal on all developments. The tag team of Jason Verhoven, Publisher and Malcolm

Dias, Editor, flew into Doha Qatar at the invitation of the GWC Group to report on this landmark milestone event.

Hybrid Forum The hybrid forum, which was moderated by Al Jazeera Network’s Senior News Anchor, Emily Angwin, and streamed live on YouTube, featured keynote speeches, panel sessions, and workshops. Delegates explored the legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and discussed how Qatar’s enterprising spirit will inspire growth across the region as the nation builds towards National Vision 2030. “This is an exciting time for MSMEs in Qatar. As we work towards Qatar National Vision 2030, we are seeing strong growth and expansion as the country prioritises the development of the private sector,” stated Ranjeev Menon, Group CEO, GWC.

DECEMBER 2023 13

Events like the GWC Forum highlight the important role MSMEs are playing in boosting local and regional economies as businesses continue to leverage Qatar’s successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup and position themselves to support future mega events. This year’s forum shone a light on innovation, digital growth, and the potential of AI to supercharge businesses and help them achieve new heights. “I would like to thank our strategic partners for their unwavering support. By continuing to work together, we will provide a strong foundation for MSMEs to flourish,” continued Menon.

Keynote speech The event kicked off with a keynote speech from Dr Hamad Mejegheer, Executive Director of Advisory & Incubation, QDB (Qatar Development Bank). Dr Hamad spoke about the landscape for MSMEs and outlined the various financial and advisory products QDB has developed to support enterprises in Qatar. “Qatar’s journey in hosting the FIFA World Cup was nothing short of remarkable – transforming a sporting tournament into a cultural event that resonated globally

14 DECEMBER 2023

and left a lasting impact on our country that accelerated the growth of our entrepreneurship eco-system,” asserted Dr. Mejegheer.

Panel 1 The first panel session, entitled ‘Enabling Growth’, explored the impact of the FIFA World Cup on regional growth and sustainability, with particular focus on empowering MSMEs through sustainable logistics, the circular economy, education, and attracting foreign investment for longterm prosperity. Panelists included Syed Maaz, Chief Business Development Officer GWC; Dr Christos Anagnostopoulos, Assistant Professor in Sport Management, HBKU; Eng. Salim Al Thuhli, CEO, Khazaen Economic City, Oman; and Joelle Yazbeck, Regional Coordinator ICC United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, ESCWA. “The World Cup was a major milestone for Qatar and GWC. Qatar delivered the best-ever World Cup – and GWC delivered a strong backbone logistical support. There was not a single failure or incident. During 2022, we also saw the launch of Al Wukair

Logistics Park, which was a significant milestone in the country’s vision to create a diversified economy, opening the door for MSMEs to participate,” stressed Maaz. “Historically, Qatar has been an importer of goods – but now MSMEs are being creative and developing opportunities to supply and provide various activities, and we are proud to be part of this ecosystem,” he added.

Appetite for sporting events “In 2027, we have the Basketball World Cup, then the Asian Games in 2030, and of course, the Asian Cup in two months’ time. There remains an appetite for these sporting events across Qatar and the region,” noted Dr Anagnostopoulos. Eng. Salim Al Thuhli spoke in detail about the economic development zone, which is strategically located on the Muscat-Batinah Expressway, in the most densely populated part of the country. “Khazaen is a big city and has become part of greater Muscat. It is only 30 minutes from the airport and close to highways, seaports, and borders with both the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which opens different markets to MSMEs. About 80% of the Omani

This agreement will play a significant role in building synergies between our organisations as we collaborate closely with businesses of varying sizes. GWC will also offer accommodation solutions, provide logistics consultation services, offer preferential rates for UPS services to QDB staff and clients, and facilitate a holistic offering for QDB clients engaged in export services. The two companies will also explore future collaboration opportunities related to incubation and acceleration programmes, forums, and events. “Partnering with QDB illustrates GWC’s ongoing commitment to supporting new and existing businesses in Qatar. Our combined expertise is sure to benefit a range of enterprises and help to further develop the local economy,” remarked Saud Al Emadi, Senior Manager, Business Transformation, GWC.

momentum with time,” affirmed Ms. Yazbeck “MSMEs will have to learn to embrace digital technology and leverage data collection and data analytics to better understand their customers and improve their experiences to the point where they will eventually be able to make better decisions and enable growth. When we look at the diversification from an oil economy to a knowledge economy, we need to realise that data is the new oil – and you must know how to leverage this,” she further said.

QSW serves as a unique platform to promote the State of Qatar’s National Vision and to showcase the progress that the State has achieved around sustainability. The week also fosters community engagement with relevant stakeholders in support of this vision. As part of this week, GWC hosted the third edition of GWC Forum which took place on 8-9 November 2023. Earthna is a non-profit policy research and advocacy center, established by Qatar Foundation (QF) to provide a holistic view of environmental, social, and economic prosperity.

16 DECEMBER 2023

Activities The company hosted several activities including beach clean-ups and collaborative planting and landscape design projects with students from different schools at EXPO Doha 2023’s family zone. “We take great pride in leading the industry in delivering sustainable logistics and supply chain solutions to our diverse customer base. Environmental protection is a paramount concern, and at GWC, we view sustainability as a way of life, embedded at the core of our operations,” remarked Jawaher AlKhuzaei, Chief Marketing Officer, GWC. “Our association with the Qatar Sustainability Week goes back a long way and we have been champions of promoting sustainability leading to cost-savings for our clients. even at Expo 2023 we will be providing sustainable logistics solutions, thus continuing our quest to promote both economic and environmental sustainability,” added Al-Khuzaei.

and Mohammed Al Delaimi, Founder and Managing Director, SkipCash. “AI is not a new thing – it was a term coined in 1957 and has been developing ever since. Nowadays, it’s affecting every industry. In marketing, it is affecting social media and digital media – people are using Chat GPT to enhance content. Research that might have taken two hours now takes seconds. AI is also helping in terms of targeting the right audience. AI when combined with data analytics – if you put them both together – this is the future,” stressed Jawaher Al Khuzaei.

Adopting technology “We encourage entrepreneurs to adopt technology and digitise their businesses as much as possible. We also have a strong ecosystem to help digital start-ups, including sport tech, fintech, and fashion. Sponix Tech is one of our success stories. They were part of the 2022 World Cup as they provided solutions to international broadcast channels – and they are a major inspiration to other companies in Qatar,” explained Aysha Al Romaihi. Meanwhile, Mohammed Al Delaimi outlined why his business is dedicated to supporting MSMEs. “We focus on MSMEs because they are underserved by the banks. A simple solution – like a payment gateway or link – usually takes two months to create but with us, it’s created on the same day. Also, as MSMEs are so active, they give us a lot of feedback, which helps us to continually update and improve our platform. After two years, we are working with almost 1,000 MSMEs, helping them grow. We are also starting to see bigger enterprises approaching us, along with government entities,” he pointed out. On day two of the forum, the ‘Future Ready MSME Workshop’ presented a strategic approach for businesses preparing to navigate upcoming challenges effectively. Following a keynote speech from GWC, HBKU delivered a data-rich and interactive workshop focused on the opportunities and challenges facing MSMEs.

Sport can be a source of economic benefit, creating jobs and boosting national output Dr. Christos Anagnostopoulos, UNESCO Chairholder and Assistant Professor in Sport Management, College of Science & Engineering, Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Doha Qatar, and Member of Qatar Foundation, explains how sporting events can help MSMEs grow through improved Logistics and Supply Chain Management in an exclusive interview with Global Supply Chain.

G

lobal Supply Chain conducted an exclusive one-on-one interview with Dr. Christos Anagnostopoulos on the sidelines of the recently concluded GWC Forum 2023 in Doha-Qatar, where the academic was a panelist on the first of the two panel discussions titled— Enabling growth. Global Supply Chain (GSC): Give us the one-minute narrative on the Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Doha Qatar (HBKU) —its mission statement / mandate / student profile and teaching facilities and faculties? Dr. Christos Anagnostopoulos (CA): As a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) was founded in 2010 to pursue QF’s mission of unlocking human potential. By proving an enriching academic experience and fostering an innovative research ecosystem, we are committed to actively contributing to the achievement of Qatar National Vision 2030. The University currently offers 41 programmes across its six colleges, with more programmes being currently considered. Through these educational pathways, we provide students with opportunities to engage in inquiry and discovery and develop innovative solutions that are locally relevant and have a global impact. GSC: Spell out your portfolio and

Dr Christos Anagnostopoulos, HBKU mandate in your current position? CA: I am an Assistant Professor in Sport Management at the College of Science and Engineering (CSE), where I teach the MSc in Sport and Entertainment Management programme, a joint programme with the University of South Carolina (USA). I am also the founder and director of the UNESCO Chair on Governance and Social Responsibility in Sport, a programme that has been established to foster an integrated system of research, education, and training to enhance the quality of governance practices within the sport industry and, by engaging with diverse and influential people, advocates socially responsible

programme designs that prioritize sport as a core component. GSC: What do you enjoy most about your work? CA: Well, most people follow sport; passively and/or actively with various degrees of enthusiasm. Most of our applicants (we had more than 140 applicants for just ten positions) demonstrate this enthusiasm both in their applications and in class. My fulfillment comes when I build on their ‘what’ and co-create knowledge with them on the reasons and processes behind it. To the end, these students are the next generation of sport leaders in Qatar and

abroad, so it is my duty, responsibility, and role to assist them in asking better questions and in developing concrete ideas and solutions that will guide future action. However, my primary objective is to convey the message that nothing can be achieved in the country and the region without ensuring that the next generation of sport leaders is well-versed in principles of good governance and social responsibility and embraces universal, but culturally rooted ethical values. GSC: Considering that education, knowledge and academia eventually must eventually point to applications in business and industry, what is your take on the convergence of academia and business? CA: A common conception is that academia and industry do not ‘talk’ to one another. Scholars are the ones who develop frameworks and constructs that are understood at best by members of a ‘closed’ community of a very narrow field of study. This is, of course, not the case for HBKU in general and for the CSE in particular. A great example that proves my point is an agreement between HBKU and Gulf Warehousing Company (GWC) that was initiated in 2021, and continues to exist today, aimed at to promoting impactful and

innovative research and development in the fields of engineering, technology and science, with a special emphasis on logistics and supply chain management. GSC: Describe the HBKU interfacepartnership with the GWC Group? What are your joint objectives? CA: GWC is working closely with the CSE with the view to assessing the impact of the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Qatar, especially focusing on empowering micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) not just in the country but across the region as well. Our goal is to maximize industry performance and amplify mutually beneficial opportunities while providing a scientific approach to solving industryrelated issues. In addition, the agreement provides that GWC cooperate with HBKU’s degree programmes at the CSE, which include master’s and doctoral programmes in logistics and supply chain management. GSC: Where does ‘sport’ find its place in those activities, however? CA: Sport can be a source of economic benefit, creating jobs, generating tax revenues, and boosting national output. It can also serve as a stimulus for infrastructural development and economic

regeneration and provide the basis for urban planning projects. Qatar’s investment in sport is neither whimsical nor a matter of vanity. It is contextualized within the framework of the country’s 2030 vision, which places geographic, political, and economic factors at the centre. Let’s consider four key distinct but interrelated sport logistics pillars: managing the sport venues; the newly developed infrastructure and transportation systems for fans and spectators; the management of the athletes’ logistics, and of course, the core logistics-related task that concerns the transportation process of the required equipment for all three above pillars: venues, fans and athletes. Therefore, we are working closely with influential companies such as GWC in order to identify new research opportunities and capture lessons learned over the last decade through rigorous and applied research efforts, ensuring that understanding the environment in which these activities occur (namely, the sport industry) is of paramount importance. Let’s not forget that Qatar has been awarded the hosting rights for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, with athletes, teams and fans from 31 different countries arriving and staying in the city of Doha.

What are some golden rules on embracing automation for the uninitiated?

When embarking on an automation journey, it’s important to have a strategic approach to ensure success. Here are my top three golden rules: Conduct a Comprehensive Process Analysis Before implementing automation, you should conduct a thorough analysis of your existing processes. Identify bottlenecks, pain points, and areas where automation can bring the most value. Engage with your employees who are directly involved in these processes to gather their insights and feedback. This analysis will provide a solid foundation for designing effective automation solutions. Start Small and Scale Gradually Automation initiatives can be complex and may require significant changes to existing systems and workflows. I’d advise to start small and select a pilot project that demonstrates the potential benefits of automation in a controlled environment. This approach allows you to test and refine your automation strategy, learn from any challenges, and gain buyin from stakeholders. Once you’ve proven success with the pilot project, you can gradually scale up automation efforts to other areas of the organization. Evaluate Automation Tools and Choice of Partners Evaluate the available automation technologies and tools that align with your objectives and requirements. Consider factors such as scalability, ease of integration, security, and suppliers’ support. It’s also important to consider additional factors like data quality and security, and the importance of continuous improvement. An ongoing commitment to optimization and refinement is critical for a successful automation journey.

If you’re unsure where to begin, SSI SCHAEFER is the recommended partner of choice to guide you through your design and consultancy phase up till to implementation phase with 80 over years of industry experience.

8

Your company was listed in the Saudi Stock Exchange in March 2022. What’s next for Nahdi Medical Company?

T

he Mercedes-Benz Econic is a versatile, dependable and reliable truck that is perfect for airport operations. The Econic is designed to be highly flexible, ensuring smooth ground handling. The low cab can fit under the vast majority of aircraft wings, ranging from the Boeing 737 to the Airbus A380. Positioning the major assemblies behind the cab creates a vehicle which is extremely bodybuilder friendly. This is precisely what makes the Econic such a multi-talent. Refuelling, catering or with a scissor-type medical lift to assist wheelchair users and passengers who must be transported in a lying position.

Flexibility In diesel or electric version alike, MercedesBenz Econic is a highly versatile truck, ensuring the success of airlines above the clouds that need rapid solutions on the ground. Thanks to the standard automatic transmission, drivers can concentrate wholly on their surroundings. Meanwhile, the

panoramic glazing also allows the driver to keep everything well in sight—aeroplanes, ground handling vehicles and employees among others. It’s a professional among professionals. In essence, the Econic is designed to be highly flexible, ensuring smooth ground handling

Mercedes-Benz eEconic The Econic is available in series production as a fully electric truck since 2022. The core of the electric drive of the eEconic is the electric axle drive with two integrated electric motors and two-speed transmission. The eAxle provides continuous power of 330kW or 400 kW peak power. Three battery packs have 112 kWh each, adding up to the total energy content of 336 kWh. With the DC charging of max 160 kW, it takes just over an hour to charge the batteries from 20% to 80%. The electric drive of the eEconic produces no local emissions and above all is quiet, characteristics that have a positive effect on the quality of life of residents and of the vehicle crew.

Responsibly designed and responsible in action The Econic is a unique concept specifically designed for everyday and practical use: As a state-of-the-art low-entry vehicle, the Econic copes with the demands upon a commercial vehicle. It enhances working efficiency and is way ahead of its time. Be it in municipal use, consolidated or short-radius distribution transport operations or in many further applications, it assures users of guaranteed performance.

Active employment protection by low entry At the heart of the Econic design is a pioneering idea: low-entry. With that, getting in and out is much easier and safer than in any other commercial vehicle. Compared to ordinary trucks, Econic and eEconic have a much lower cab roof height. Moreover, full air suspension with a lifting and lowering function on all axles is also better for the drivers’ back and joints and precious cargo.

MERCEDES-BENZ ECONIC TRUCK

Additionally, an ergonomic seat, intuitive disposed instruments, a steering wheel with multifunctional keys and clear fittings provide health-preserving working conditions to users. The following are the practical advantages of the Econic: • Panoramic window for maximum visibility. • Ergonomic easy-access, low-entry cab. • Innovative safety systems. • Sustainable and economical diesel and electric drive concepts. • Variable body options for custom solutions. • Permitted gross vehicle weight of 18t to 26t (27t for eEconic) Optimum performance in the narrowest of spaces – that’s the domain of the Econic. The unique low-entry concept, a strong powertrain and the high, good, bodymounting ability give it the necessary flexibility for numerous operations. For airfield use the low-entry cab is a big advantage. Thanks to easy getting in, comfortable headroom in the vehicle interior and the inwards-opening folding door, the driver can exit and enter on the safe side of the vehicle away from the traffic, thereby ensuring better work accomplishment. In short-distance distribution transport, the Econic scores especially by its maneuverability and excellent handling. This is particularly the case in narrow city streets or when cars parked in a second row narrow the roadway.

30 DECEMBER 2023

Right choice The Econic also serves as the right choice for turntable ladder, hydraulic platform, tanker or fire truck. Numerous body-mounting possibilities make the Special Truck a professional partner in firefighting. The Econic is designed as the right one for the apron. The cab fits under every plane, a fast and uncomplicated assembly of the cabins with catering requirement or a fast refueling without difficult ranking is possible. Also, in construction traffic within the city, the Econic does an outstanding job in crane construction as a concrete mixer or dump truck. Due to the outstanding overview in traffic, the Econic contributes substantially to general road safety.

The Econic with DirectVision: Anticipatory driving at eye level Streets lined with parked vehicles, confusing traffic situations and overtaking cyclists: just a few of the daily challenges that have to be faced in dense urban traffic. The Econic with DirectVision Cab is perfectly prepared to take on those challenges. Its exceptional low-entry concept offers a number of convincing benefits, the most notable being the cab with panoramic glazing which provides an unobstructed view. A direct view of the street and pavement is a considerable advantage over conventional trucks and is important for the safety of

MERCEDES-BENZ ECONIC TRUCK

more vulnerable road users. The low seating position and the fully glazed folding door on the passenger side mean that the driver is at eye level with other road users, always having a better and more expansive view of things.

Direct view ensures safety Drivers can communicate directly with other road users through eye contact: An advantage which, in a hectic traffic environment, can be crucial. This is because if you can see what is going on with your own eyes, you can drive in a more anticipatory manner, assess hazardous situations better, react faster - and in the end arrive punctually. In the DirectVision cab, road users will be recognized directly, and potential risks are considerably lessened.

Additional Assistance Systems In addition to the DirectVision Cab, the sophisticated Econic camera and mirror system expands the field of vision to include working and dead-angle areas. Depending on the situation, the driver on the screen in the cockpit can always check the most important perspectives around the vehicle. Furthermore, standard fitted safety systems like the Active Brake Assist with pedestrian detection provide additional support and protection. This makes every traffic situation even more safer.

In eEconic, the electric axle drive has two integrated electric motors and twospeed transmission and 400 kW peak power. 3 battery packs with total 336 kWh are installed, which can be charged with DC charging power of up to 160 kW.

Protecting what is important – the Econic safety concept Narrow streets, pedestrians, children on the way to school and cyclists – in tricky, busy situations, seconds can make all the difference. Intelligent systems make for maximum safety. When it comes to anticipatory driving and prevention, the Econic is a decisive step ahead of conventional trucks. This can be attributed in no small way to the low seating position and panoramic cab windows. This is also because the Econic has multiple safety systems on board. With their cameras, sensors and additional lighting systems, they ensure that the driver can focus on what’s important. This is true even in situations that demand maximum attention, such as in heavy traffic around town, when turning off, manoeuvering and reversing, or when encountering the end of a tailback.

ABU DHABI PORTS GROUP WHITEPAPER

AD Ports Group spearheads Trade Innovation and Diversification amid global uncertainties The Whitepaper was launched following the conclusion of the landmark IAPH The Whitepaper was launched following the conclusion of the landmark International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) World Ports Conference-Abu Dhabi 2023, hosted by AD Ports Group, the leading facilitator of global trade, logistics, and industry, held, for the first time ever, in the Middle East Region.

I

n an era marked by complex geopolitical challenges, ports operators that provide a broader, deeper, and more sophisticated range of services, moving beyond simply handling in-port cargo and containers, will thrive no matter how fraught those geopolitical stresses become. That was a key finding from a new Whitepaper unveiled by AD Ports Group on Navigating Geopolitical Shifts: Strategies for Ports in an Uncertain World.

Case Study At a time when traditional maritime practices are being reevaluated and reinvented, AD Ports Group serves as a case study for the ports industry, thriving amid global uncertainty through strategic acquisitions, capital investment, and diversification. The report highlights that fundamental to success is positioning businesses to capitalize on opportunities, such as new trade routes that develop in response to challenges. It also explains how diversification fosters robust relationships

with international stakeholders, as well as local economies, supporting those ports. These pioneering strategies are not merely reactive measures but proactive steps in shaping a more interconnected and stable global trade landscape. “Our Group aims to have a diverse number of trade routes, a diverse number of trading partners and multiple product sectors. This diversity in operations often means that activities can be positively affected by geopolitical ructions, offsetting those negatively impacted by the same events,” stressed Ross Thompson, Group Chief Strategy and Growth Officer, AD Ports Group.

Narrative The Whitepaper presents a narrative of AD Ports Group’s journey, showcasing how enhanced inter- and intra-regional trade, forging new agreements with frontier, and emerging markets and collaborating with multilateral trade organizations, can bring greater and more sustainable prosperity to a myriad of societies while delivering returns to its shareholders.

AD Ports Group has put these principles into practice, illustrating its success with multiple recently inked agreements; one highlight includes a joint venture with Uzbekistan oil and gas company SEG to launch a logistics and freight businesses in the central Asian country and develop a food trading hub for the surrounding region.

SLIMSTOCK CASE STUDY

Bidfood partners with Slimstock to drive and empower its supply chain transformation Foodservice distributor adopts AI-enabled Slim4 to gain the competitive edge The food industry is very volatile, moves fast and needs to be always resilient and versatile. To keep up, companies need to adapt swiftly and remain agile. If there is any hope of leading the industry, it requires an ethos of constant innovation. As one of the Middle East Africa (MEA) region’s leaders, Bidfood knows this all too well. To this end, they recently adopted the AI-enabled Slim4 to give their supply chain process and their wider business a cutting edge over the competition.

36 DECEMBER 2023

“At Bidfood, we serve over 5,000 customers across diverse sectors, independently operating in five different countries: the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman and Jordan”.

T Bidfood ME, is a foodservice distributor of food, beverage and non-food related products in five markets, with food and beverage companies in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman and Jordan. The company serves customers in a wide range of sectors within the foodservice and catering industries. These include hotels, restaurants, cafes, QSRs (Quick Service Restaurants), sub-distributors, wholesalers, entertainment, as well as many independent operators in the hospitality industry. The corporate mission at Bidfood is to deliver service excellence, making life easier and helping our customers to grow. The company is customercentric at heart, and is led by research and insights, whether that is into food trends that help menus stay ahead of the curve, or into the latest technological advances that allow it to continuously develop its service offerings, a company post has affirmed.

he Food and Beverage (F&B) industry has grappled with several and significant challenges lately. The huge increase in energy costs, rising inflation, and a heightened focus on the cost of living have forced the hands of many companies across the globe. Finding an equilibrium between sustainable and healthconscious products and harsh economic realities presents a complex puzzle. The Food and Beverage industry global growth is anticipated to reach a staggering US$ 7,525.7bn in 2023. For MEA, this constitutes a value of US$ 383.2bn in 2022, which is expected to grow by more than 33% from 2022-2027. To ride this tide of change, food distribution companies must overcome a myriad of logistical challenges to keep their business in the mind of the customer. Hence, Bidfood has decided to collaborate with Slimstock to support their digital transformation project. Making the case for and explaining the AI-enabled approach to the Middle East F&B market, Hisham Aljamil, CEO, Bidfood MEA, spoke expansively and made the case for this new phase of development. Q: Why did Bidfood decide to launch a supply chain transformation project? Hisham Aljamil (HAJ): I have had a long history in the food industry. Food has always brought people together, and it always will. If you do not give your customer the best experience, you will both lose sales and trust. At Bidfood, we are doing this by developing

a more proactive approach instead of being reactive and always playing catch up. Historically, at Bidfood, we always experienced a lot of traditional solutions on everyday tasks, which narrowed our visibility throughout the business. To unify our endto-end operations without sacrificing the autonomy of each location, we launched a supply chain transformation project to support our continuous growth. We needed a predictive and prescriptive solution with the capacity to standardise our operations by consolidating all information in one location, giving us complete visibility. Q: Why was this he right moment to make a change? HAJ: Our business is growing at a fast pace. We needed to add best-in-class technology to improve our operational efficiency and address industry-specific challenges. Reducing the reaction time in a volatile market was the key to giving our supply team more time to fortify our end-to-end operations and enhance productivity, efficiency and process optimisation. At Bidfood, we serve over 5,000 customers across diverse sectors, independently operating in five different countries: the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman and Jordan. We have embraced a mission to deliver the highest quality products to customers spanning various segments in the food service and catering industries in every corner of the MEA region. This has given us the opportunity to improve our operations in each country we operate in. Q: What is the main objective of this supply chain transformation project? HAJ: The incredible journey of our region’s hospitality scene should be celebrated. But before we get ahead of ourselves, it needs to be supported in a robust and competent manner. We embarked on this digital transformation project to enhance our efficiency and streamline our operations to make our customer experience even better.

DECEMBER 2023 37

SLIMSTOCK CASE STUDY

What made Slimstock the right partner for this project? HAJ: We explored the market to find an expert in the Food & Beverage industry, who can manage our project’s scale, while maintaining a local presence. Slimstock’s supply chain solution, Slim4, has been hugely successful in other markets. We also saw the great job they did at Bidfood in the UK and Netherlands and were entirely convinced they could continue those results with us here in MEA. The communication between Bidfood and Slimstock during the initial discussion phase gave us the confidence to create this long-term relationship. It also really helps that Slimstock has experts located all over the globe. Slimstock provides an end-to-end AI platform that can plan with precision all our supply chain operations. I am confident that the ROI (return on investment) will be very positive; we have big ambitions for this project when it comes to increasing our availability while reducing our inventory. Q: Knowing the role that your people play in the supply chain transformation, how can Slimstock help you to manage the Bidfood team?

38 DECEMBER 2023

HAJ: Our people are essential to our success. Giving our team the tools, knowledge and power to consult fortifies our end-to-end processes. It also ensures rapid adoption with a flexible user experience that underpins our team’s work. Slimstock gives us training programs, knowledge sessions, and community events that enhance our knowledge and improve our productivity discussions and efficiency. All the resources that Slimstock provide give us more confidence in nurturing our team’s capabilities. Q: How will Slim4 empower your supply chain teams? HAJ: An AI-enabled platform helps us automate. It also helps us streamline support with a transparent and accountable process. This allows our supply chain team to create a seamless operation with a userfriendly dashboard in Slim4. It’s such an improvement and will no doubt empower them to make informed, data-driven decisions and more strategic forecasts. After the implementation of Slim4, the foundations are set for reaching operational excellence in the S&OE (Sales and Operations Execution) process. We’ll then be exploring new ways to mature

our S&OP (Sales and Operations Planning). With Slimstock’s expert guidance, the collaboration between our teams should be smoother than it’s ever been before. Q: What is next for Bidfood going forward? HAJ: Thanks to the excellent chemistry we have created with Slimstock, we want to roll this out operationally across the business. We have decided to add the Slimstock logo to our fleet as a visual advertisement of our new capability. Bidfood Middle East’s move towards digital transformation with Slimstock marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the food industry in the Middle East and Africa. As the food market grows and evolves, this innovative initiative will help set new standards for supply chain efficiency and operational excellence. The project further demonstrates Bidfood Middle East’s commitment to meeting the dynamic demands of the market but also represents its vision for long-term growth and success. The partnership between these two industry leaders signifies a profound step forward in the quest for excellence in the region’s food service and catering sectors.

IFS—THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

Returning to home soil: Reshoring can help alleviate supply chain issues It needs tech to keep the costs down

In this special contribution, Maggie Slowik, Global Industry Director, Manufacturing, IFS, examines the rise to reshoring, and how it presents an excellent platform for a rebound in US manufacturing.

I

n response to global economic, production and supply challenges, more US manufacturers are focused on reducing risk across their operations as they concentrate on contracting their supply chains and bringing more work inhouse or closer to home. This is giving rise to the trend of reshoring and nearshoring. In the post pandemic world of skill shortages, supply chain disruptions and geopolitical issues, manufacturers are struggling to operate at full capacity. In a bid to tackle these issues, and to make them a bygone, manufacturers and logistic providers have sought to look nearer to home.

Economic strains prompt a move back home – reshoring to relieve disruption: Reshoring’s primary goal is to regain control over the entire end-to-end supply chain—

40 DECEMBER 2023

it’s about manufacturing products on local soil and it’s a process that’s been gaining traction from companies worldwide. From a North American perspective, the picture is no different. ManyUS companies have begun the shift away from globalization as default, with research suggesting that nearly 350,000 jobs were re-shored to the US in 2022—a notable increase when compared to the 2021 figure of 260,000. The movement has also seen companies become less reliant on China. Now, many economies including the US, India, and the European Union are looking to establish a roadmap that will balance supply chains and increase resiliency. The China Plus One Strategy is an approach adopted by a number of businesses looking to include sourcing from other destinations. Already, numerous companies have

turned to Vietnam and India as an alternative, with both countries reporting an uptick in investment from US companies that have built plants there.

Reshoring Initiative According to the Reshoring Initiative® IH 2022 Data Report, supply chain gaps, the need for greater self-sufficiency, and a volatile geopolitical climate are major factors driving reshoring. Looking back, the Reshoring Initiative IH® 2020 Data Report found that 69% of companies cited supply chain disruptions as the primary reason for reshoring. There is now movement on a national level to strengthen supply chains and promote domestic manufacturing with the introduction of the bipartisan National Development Strategy and Coordination Bill in December 2022. This bill highlights the importance of manufacturing reshoring

Key risk mitigation strategies are impklemeting over the next year

According to the US Reshoring Initiative, in 2021 the private and federal push for domestic US supply of essential goods propelled reshoring and foreign direct investment (FDI) job announcements to a record high. to national economic development going forward into 2023.

Costs remain a deciding factor for making reshoring reality… but don’t forget sustainability! Recent research commissioned by IFS, polling senior decision-makers working for large enterprises globally, found that 72% have increased their usage of domestic suppliers, compared to international suppliers. From a sustainability perspective, there are huge benefits to be gained—in fact, reshoring is giving manufacturers an excellent opportunity to look hard at their manufacturing processing and how they can develop more sustainable processes. For example, it can minimize carbon dioxide emissions as transport is reduced, and a spur a deduction in wasteful overproduction as supply chains are brought closer together. As the whole world strives to act more sustainably in the race to net-zero, environmental benefits will play a huge role in driving new sourcing strategies.

Silver bullet So, reshoring is not the silver bullet to mitigating supply chain disruption entirely. Often companies can underestimate the sheer level of effort, costs, and logistical planning required to make reshoring a success. But for many US companies, the extra costs to manufacture within the country are outweighed by saved customs and shipping costs, and the additional sustainability benefits associated with offshore operations.

A new IDC InfoBrief, sponsored by IFS and entitled Shaping the Future of Manufacturing, shows an active correlation between digital maturity and profit— manufacturers reporting an optimized level of digital transformation saw profits increase (40%), while those with less advanced digital transformation maturity suffered bigger reductions in profit in the last fiscal year.

Tech at the ready As so often, the business conundrum needs the help of technology, and it is there and ready to deliver. Tech has been quick to respond to the call to deliver the agility, fast Time to Insight (TTI) that manufacturers need to better forecast demand and provide a more detailed view of sustainability across product supply chains. Exceptional supply chain management will be a vital part of the move to reshoring. The IFS study showed supply chain management was now seen by 37% of respondents as one of the top three priorities their organization is trying to solve through technology investment. The technology is there.

Reshoring in action – will the benefits be worth it? In a recent Kearney Index on manufacturing reshoring, 92% of executives express positive sentiments toward reshoring. And that’s no surprise when you consider the additional benefits on offer. As well as a more protected supply chain ecosystem, there are also positive societal benefits from the move to reshoring.

Supply Chain benefits From a broader perspective, there are many profitable and supply chain benefits at stake for manufacturers. For example, research found that 83% of consumers in the US are willing to pay 20% more for American-made products, with another 57% claiming that the origin of a product would sway their purchasing decision. Manufacturers will also benefit from shorter supply chains and on a day-today level, on-site teams will experience increased collaboration as reshoring drastically reduces the time difference between headquarters and the manufacturing plant.

Reshoring for a better future – tech needs to stand up to the case It’s easy to see why the appeal of reshoring is prompting a move toward US based manufacturing is initiatives. By addressing reshoring now with the right technology, efficiently and cost-effectively, manufacturers will put themselves in a great position to not only survive but also thrive long into the future. Of course, as with any major transformation, there are hurdles to overcome but the long-term results of reshoring look as though it’s a journey worth embarking on. From increased employment to tighter manufacturing control. As increased companies around the world look to reshore operations on home soil, manufacturers will need the guiding hand of a flexible and agile software platform to make reshoring a reality at scale.

DHL—THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

How Technology can strengthen the Healthcare Supply Chain

Digital technology is a key enabler of healthcare delivery, from remote patient monitoring to apps Patient-centric services are transforming the healthcare ecosystem. Increasingly, treatment in clinics and hospitals is being replaced with new therapeutic approaches and specialized treatments that harness the latest technologies. This shift has had significant implications for patients, healthcare providers, and for the supply chains that underpin the industry, opines Annette Naude, Regional Head of Life Sciences and Chemicals, DHL Global Forwarding Middle East Africa.

W

ith virtual healthcare and telemedicine becoming the norm after the pandemic, patients expect the same choice and convenience in healthcare that they enjoy when procuring other products and services, giving rise to a form of ‘healthcare consumerism’. As a result, established companies are diversifying their offerings to more personalized healthcare products and services targeting specific consumer groups. There is significant opportunity for supply chain and logistics operations to support and promote this new model of patient-centric healthcare. Not only will it help establish a deeper understanding of how patients want to engage with health services and receive treatments, but it will also help determine what information they want access to and in which format.

Digitalization to eliminate siloes Digital technology is a key enabler of new healthcare delivery, from remote patient monitoring to apps and videoconferencing for doctor-patient consultations. In fact, digitizing the supply chain offers multiple opportunities for participants to improve the quality, security, agility and cost-effectiveness of their supply networks. Using asset tracking technologies, drug and device suppliers can effectively monitor the status of consignment stocks at hospitals or even in patient’s homes, paving the way for seamless, automated replenishment. Blockchain technologies can support

42 DECEMBER 2023

information exchange and supply chain coordination in complex, multi-stakeholder networks. Blockchains can also be used to verify compliance and stop counterfeit products entering the supply chain. Smart analytics technologies, including digital twins, can be used to optimize material flows and inventory disposition, helping reduce waste and maintain availability.

Improved speed, efficiency and convenience Unfortunately, supply chain and healthcare digitization initiatives are usually designed and implemented independently. But bringing those two sides of the digital equation together could pave the way for a positive change in efficiency, speed and convenience. For example, in hospital settings, dispensing robots could generate replenishment orders automatically based on real time data on demand for drugs and devices on the ward.

The required data already exists in the value chain, but it is distributed across multiple different systems with limited interconnections. Integrating this data into a common platform would allow value chain participants to derive new insights and automate activities to a much larger extent than currently possible.

Data optimization For many Middle East players, the emerging challenge is learning how to use all that data to optimize supply chain performance. It will require a robust data platform strategy, with appropriate governance and access control to ensure that data can be used widely across the organization, without compromising security, confidentially or compliance. Looking ahead, as organizations in every industry in the region face greater pressure to minimize the environmental impact of their operations, digitalization of the supply chain can also ensure reduced carbon emissions and optimization of transportation assets – making it a win-win for the healthcare sector, governments and logistics operators.

EGA begins construction of UAE’s largest aluminium recycling plant n Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest ‘premium aluminium’ producer in the world, recently announced the start of construction of the United Arab Emirates’ largest aluminium recycling plant. The 170,000 tonnes per year facility is being built next to EGA’s existing smelter in Al Taweelah. The plant will process postconsumer aluminium scrap such as used window frames, as well as pre-consumer aluminium scrap from extrusion production, into low-carbon, high quality premium aluminium billets. The new facility will supply local and global markets with low carbon metal under the product name RevivAL. Construction is expected to be complete within three years, according to an official press communique. Most of the aluminium scrap generated in the UAE is currently exported for processing outside the country and is lost to the national economy. Once the recycling plant is complete, EGA expects to become the largest consumer of aluminium scrap in the UAE.

56 DECEMBER 2023

Market analysts expect global demand for recycled aluminium to grow from some 27mn tonnes per year in 2022 to 57mn tonnes in 2040. Recycled aluminium is expected to account for around 60 per cent of the growth in global aluminium supply between now and 2030, and around 70 per cent of supply growth between 2030 and 2040. Aluminium is infinitely-recyclable.

Recycling aluminium requires 95 per cent less energy than making new metal, and results in a fraction of the greenhouse gas emissions of primary aluminium production. “Aluminium recycling is key to our metal achieving its enormous potential to contribute to decarbonisation while improving global living standards,” remarked Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO, Emirates Global Aluminium.
