DNA Nanobait Test for Respiratory Viruses
Anew test developed by researchers at University of Cambridge (Cambridge, UK; www.cam.ac.uk) uses DNA ‘nanobait’ to detect common respiratory viruses – including influenza, rhinovirus, RSV and COVID-19 – simultaneously. The new test which uses single strands of DNA as ‘bait’ to ‘fish’ for multiple respiratory viruses at once delivers accurate results in less than an hour. The researchers demonstrated that it can also be easily modified to discriminate between viral variants, including SARS-CoV-2 variants.
Amniotic Fluid Cells RNA-Sequencing
Demonstrates Diagnostic Potential in Deciphering Rare Diseases
Aresearch team at The University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong SAR, China; www.
hku.hk) has discovered that applying amniotic fluid cells obtained during 16-24 weeks of pregnancy as a novel sample type for RNA-sequencing in prenatal diagnosis of rare genetic diseases could help more families with tailored clinical management. The researchers found that the number of well-expressed genes in amniotic fluid cells was comparable to other clinically accessible tissues commonly used for genetic diagnosis across different disease categories. This is the first proof-of-concept study to demonstrate the potential clinical utility of amniotic fluid cells RNA-sequencing.
Rapid Diagnostic Test Uses Light to Detect Malaria without Blood Samples
Ateam of scientists led by Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD, USA; www. jhu.edu) is developing a rapid diagnostic test that uses light to diagnose malaria without the need for blood draws or finger pricks. Antimicrobial Resistance: New Insights into Evolution Call for Shifts in Testing
Agroundbreaking research study led by the University of Oxford (Oxford, UK; www. ox.ac.uk) has offered novel insights into the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in patients suffering from bacterial infections. Contrary to the conventional belief that infection typically occurs due to a single strain of bacteria that develops resistance through new genetic mutations, the study suggests that patients often get co-infected by multiple clones of pathogens. In these cases, resistance arises from the selection of already resistant clones rather than new mutations. This finding could lead to more effective preventative strategies against AMR infections in susceptible individuals.
