: KAZA MWENDO HOUSING COOPERATIVE KENYAN FEDERATION OF SLUM DWELLERS (GRADUATION PROJECT)
DATE
: JAN 2017
INTRODUCTION This project focuses on incremental housing: a form of evolutionary, flexible and adaptable housing. It involves a kind of step-by-step conf iguration of the house to allow the users to build/improve their homes according their housing needs. It is expressed through many different volumetric increase of form and other modular developments. These developments are done according to the needs of families of different types and at various life stages. Its main aim is to reduce upf ront capital cost and allow the user to manipulate the spatial conf iguration of their homes (within certain limits) according to their needs and income over time. Moreover, this project is to employ this mode of housing delivery to show its dynamism just as housing needs are dynamic (Coelho, 2009) rather than mimic the current static solutions provided that are concerned with the immediate end product rather than what it does for the user, not only material wise but also socio-economically. (Turner & Fichter, 1972).
THE BRIEF The client, Kaza Mwendo Housing Cooperatives, wishes to put up housing and community facilities: community hall and market, police post, health centre and a school for its members and the surrounding community. These housing typologies selected to be a prototype for the various housing blocks in the housing scheme, and their different permutations. These permutations will be based on 4 broad family life stages (see Figure 2) of household/families of the members adopted f rom the family life cycle (Org, 2017). The family life cycle stages influences the activity/living patterns of the household and in turn affect the number of rooms, the size and characteristics of their living spaces.

THE BRIEF UN-Habitat in collaboration with Ministry of Land, Housing & Urban Development: Urban Development Department, Kenya, is looking for creative planning and design ideas for sustainable urban development in Kenya. Students f rom around the world are invited to participate in a student design competition for Kenya’s towns. The project objective include the need to: • enhance the urban design component of the ISUDPs • apply urban planning and urban design skills • provide an opportunity to illustrate the opportunities and limitations of the ISUDPs in terms of developing the next generation of Kenyan cities and towns f rom a spatial perspective
The assignment is to analyze the respective site, including the contextual conditions and how it f its in the proposed ISUDP, and thus to understand the inherent challenges and opportunities. Based on the outcome, each team shall forward a proposal on how the site can be developed through an urban planning and design f ramework, e.g. in the form of urban design guidelines or a specif ic project proposal. The emphasis should be on the conceptual idea, rather than the detailed solution. The towns included in the competition differ in size, location and character. Thus, the assignment is based on different geographical, topographical, typological, socio-economic conditions, and will address urban design issues on different urban scales, f rom city district to neighborhood or very local level e.g. a street or place. Teams may also choose to address the urban challenges by preparing proposals based on a thematic approach.
THE CONCEPT create a semi-autonomous satellite CBD through applying various principles of New Urbanism concepts at different levels, considering different factors and proposals in the Thika ISUDP in order to create a smart, wholesome and sustainable Kiang’ombe & empower residents, especially economically.
