at e r t r o k Tric Halloween is coming on October 31st and is a perfect time to wear a disguise; the more terrifying, the better. What do children do on this scary night? They dress up and knock on their neighbors’ doors holding their little plastic pumpkins to carry their treats. When the people open the door children yell “Trick or Treat!” all together. So people must give them candies, otherwise children will throw eggs to their house or play another naughty trick.

Meant to be together A long time ago, people thought that black cats protected witches and their powers. These women died at the stake accused of witchcraft, but cats also suffered. People used to hunt them and accuse them of being the witches’ loyal companions. Later, people thought that cats were the witches themselves.

A door to a new life

We celebrate Day of the Dead on November 1st and 2nd. But do you know why we celebrate it? It all goes back to the Aztecs. It was a way to mock death. They believed death was a door to a new life. This explains why they were happy to celebrate. In contrast, Halloween means “All Hallow’s Eve.” This expression comes from old English. It means “before all Saints come.” That happens on October 31st. This old AngloSaxon tradition was very religious. These days, it is not a religious celebration any longer. People make parties and have fun that night. They dress up as witches, ghosts and the like. Which celebration do you prefer?

Thanks for the harvest This story goes back to America in 1620. The pilgrims were the people who traveled from England to America. They crossed the Atlantic on the ship Mayflower and disembarked in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Native Americans welcomed them. They taught the pilgrims many things. They told them about the harvests. They showed them to hunt and use the skin of the animals in the area. The pilgrims organized a great dinner to celebrate two things. First, that they could survive a hard winter. Second, that they had an excellent harvest to survive the next winter. This dinner is what we know as Thanksgiving Day. Americans celebrate it on the fourth Thursday of November.

Wise women

The word “witch” comes from English word “wicce” meaning wise woman. In fact, “wiccans” were very respected according to history. They celebrated one of their two most important gatherings on Halloween.

One bright day in the middle of the night, Two dead boys got up to fight. A deaf policeman heard the noise. He came and shot those two dead boys. If you don’t believe this lie is true, Go ask the blind man, he saw it too.

Rudolph’s red nose

We all know the red-nosed reindeer that helps Santa on Christmas Day. What we probably don’t know is why Rudolph has such a bright red nose. Let’s remember that these animals are native to Arctic regions. They have to deal with very cold temperatures. Recently, a group of scientists said reindeers have 25% more blood density in their nose than humans. Besides, their mucus helps them protect from freezing and regulate their brain temperature during sleigh rides.

by Truman Capote

Someone killed the four members of the Clutter family. It happened in Kansas on November 15, 1959. Who did it? Truman Capote uses journalism and literature to tell the story. He talks about the killers, too: Dick Hickock and Perry Edward Smith. This novel shows the two faces of the US judicial system. Capote talks about what is behind the crime. But he explores the motive of the crime too. All these aspects make this novel very attractive. The best characteristic of In Cold Blood is its realism. Its narrative combines very well with its journalistic style. Capote said the book belonged to a new genre. He called it a “non-fiction novel”.

e h t e k a M Most of Buen Fin

Ready to buy some good stuff in Novem ber? Make the most of the experience during Buen Fin but avoid red numbers. We’ll tell you how. Buen Fin is around the corner. It’ll bring very good prices and discounts but make sure you spend according to the money you have. Going wild can sometimes get you in trouble when debts increase. Don’t lose your mind over sales and offers. Instead, ask yourself: Do I really need to buy anything? If the answer is yes, consider the following aspects: Set priorities – You might want to buy a new cell phone, a pair of new jeans and shoes. The thing is sometimes we want to take advantage of this season by buying things we may not really use. So first check your closet and pocket and decide what exactly you require. Having a wish list is fine, just make realistic choices. Consider how much money you can

spend – If you borrow money, it’s okay. If you decide to spend your savings is fine, too. But don’t go into debt that you might not be able to pay later. Or even worse, are there any old debts you still have to pay? You’d rather think twice about those sunglasses that look great on you but are too expensive to buy. Compare prices – We know how dull it could be to compare prices at different stores for the same item. However, this could have advantages. Go to the stores before this sales weekend starts and check prices of things you’re interested in. This way, you’ll find out if the price of that item is reduced or if it’s actually a fake discount. What if such articles were even cheaper than before Buen Fin?

Wait: If something in the transaction looks suspicious. If the total price shown doesn’t clearly reflect shipping costs, wait and find out before proceeding to pay. Go: If you’ve bought on that website before or if someone has given you good references about the site.

Indulging yourself a little too much?

Sleep More

Vantage

Sleep is vital for our physical and mental health.

O

ne of the most important moments for everyone is sleeping. It’s when our body recovers the energy it has spent during the day. It’s also the time when our brain cells can fully regenerate. Sleeping is an activity we automatically do in our life. It is necessary for our wellbeing and health. We spend around a third of our life sleeping. If we sleep well, we’ll feel energetic and in a good mood. In addition, we’ll be more likely to live longer and better. Having a good night’s sleep is more important than we think.

20

We might believe that our body disconnects or remains inactive, but it actually doesn’t. On the contrary, our body continues working at night since it uses this time to release hormones that help us increase our state of wellbeing and be ready for the next day.

and

A matter of habit

When we sleep well, we help our body run a healing process. As a result, we’ll feel enthusiastic and prepared for what's coming in the morning. There are several factors that influence the quality of our rest. One of them is having proper habits, especially when going to bed. Having a fixed time to go to sleep is important since this way our body gets used to a regular sleeping cycle.

One of the best recommendations is going to bed when the first signs of sleepiness appear. We should get our body used to going to sleep at the same time, and therefore getting up at the same time.

If we sleep for at least 4 or 5 consecutive cycles of sleep every night with the lights off, we’ll enjoy significant benefits. Our joints rest since they carry less weight and our muscles relax which allows them to regenerate.

Our immune system recovers and we can heal faster when we’re ill.

Low light levels stimulate th e production of melatonin, a hormone with many functions in our body. The production of mel atonin is inhibited by daylight and its production increases to a pe ak at night.

Sleeping enhances our cardiovascular system because blood pressure goes down and the heart can continue working with less effort. 22

New York ew York is unique in atmosphere and lifestyle. You must experience them first hand to know what we’re talking about. What to do in New York? Go to a musical in Broadway and spend a night in Times Square. Walk on both sides of the Brooklyn Bridge and go in shopping on Fifth Avenue. Feel like a businessman do in Wall Street. These are just a few of the things to the city. You must visit the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State, and Central Park, too. After a good shopping afternoon, you might forget to visit Central Park. Miniature works of art invite us to take a look at fantastic worlds where size doesn’t matter.

Precious T r e as u r e s Little

ver time miniature artwork has existed in every culture, especially in crafts. Some of the most creative people in the past and also at present have made themselves a question: if we can build huge things, why not make them at a very small scale? Hence, they have created miniature and exceptional masterpieces. While all of us can take time to contemplate the wonderful scenery wherever we go, only a few decide to explore micro space. Miniature artwork has evolved. At first, it belonged to popular art, but it has turned into artistic and crafted pieces for more specific purposes. To better know what

the human imagination can not only conceive but also create, we’ve brought you some of the most innovative artists in the world of miniature art. Kurt Moses is an artist who works with natural landscapes and miniature figures. He creates daily life scenes making use of natural light instead of high-tech design tools like Photoshop. With his photos, he invites the viewer to get immersed in the adventures of his figures in the real world. New York-based artist Alan Wolfson creates miniature scenes of buildings or even complete blocks of cities. Most of his masterpieces are of his on creation, so he doesn’t copy the environment of any particular place. Every work tells you a story,

which is one of the many life experiences this artist has had . and wants to share with you m fro Akinobu Izumi is Tokyo. She makes very small figures and places them inside tiny bottles that can y be bought online at the Ets store. Most of these bottled e miniatures (dinosaurs, marin creatures and scenes) are made of paper and resin. So if you crave for one of these crafty pieces, you can place you order with exactly what you have in mind. Russian artist Anatoly Konenko is well known for his tiny books that are best characterized by their striking originality and

quality. He’ also the creator of the world’s smallest aquarium, which is one of the most recognized works he’s ever made. It has 10 milliliters of water only, enough for danio rerio fish (zebrafish) to live inside. It even has its own air pump. French engineer and artisan Michel Lefaivre creates functional weapons despite their minuscule size. When Lefaivre retired from a career in the industry in 2000, he combined his fascination for miniatures with his experience in the weapon industry. He doesn’t do it for the money so rarely sells his most treasured creations.

Know me! What movie genre do you enjoy most? All of them. That’s exactly the magic of the cinema. You can be in a western film, on horseback, firing a gun (The Magnificent Seven). After two months I came to Mexico to make Manolo’s film, which has an opposite plot. It’s a romantic comedy of a guy who is in love with life. In fact, working in different genres is one of my goals. I don’t want to have the same roles again and again. I’d like to make comedy, drama, action, etc. The most fun in being an actor is you can do a little bit of everything. Why do you recommend people to watch The Magnificent Seven and La vida inmoral de la pareja ideal? You’re going to have fun in the two films. The first one is full of action with a little bit of comedy, there’s drama and the music is impressive. It’s an epic movie. The photography is awesome. And the story is very entertaining so you’ll enjoy it a lot. They are different genres but very entertaining as well. You’ll like them.

Step by step

Laughing about it, García-Rulfo recalls that he didn’t drop out of university to go to Los Angeles. He wanted to witness the behind the scenes of a musical band that was setting up their show in Joshua Tree Park. When he came back to university, he had already been dismissed from school due to poor attendance. However, he was sure he had a calling for filmmaking, acting and directing: “I knew I had to make the most of this opportunity and I did. I learned more in a week than I could have learned in university in a year.” Manuel claims he had it very clear what his real vocation was. However, he was a little scared because he considers that the more passionate you are about something, the more afraid of failure you are. In addition, people constantly told him it was very hard to make a living from acting. “When they threw me out of school I thought it might have been for a reason. That made me think I had to try acting at least once, so I thought: If other people can make it, why couldn’t I?"

Given his excellent command of English and his friends in Canada, he decided to go there to do a one-month course in acting. That was the time when he realized he had been born to become an actor. “I left Mexico to test myself, to see if I really loved it as much as I said, and to see if I had talent. Then I went to What is your main personality feature? Los Angeles to study for two years. I got started in acting I’m passionate because I knew I could make it happen for real. If you weren’t an actor, what else would you like to be? When I was young, I thought I would be a photographer. After that, I changed my mind and trained with dolphins because I was interested in becoming a child therapist. I’ve always wanted to do many things but my dream job would be being a writer or architect. What country would you like to live in? In all of them. Every country has something although I love Mexico because it’s my home. I like the United States a lot. I’d like to live in Europe, England for example. Every country has its marvels. What’s your favorite color? Black and blue

Breaking boundaries

“I came back to Mexico after studying in Canada and the United States. I worked in La última y nos vamos and 180 grados. I thought I might stop acting because I did what I had dreamed of for so long. I decided to become a countryman. I got a ranch and started growing lemons. I stopped acting for a year and a half or two years. But then I realized I was not happy and wanted to come back to acting. One day, I left for Los Angeles,” he explains with a big smile on his face. Do you like poetry? Photography is another of his passions. I’m a lot into Haruki Murakami, I’ve read 4 of his books in a row. Another writer I like is Juan Rulfo, of course. The stories of El llano en llamas are really good.

The keys to his Success

la pareja ideal

Manuel considers that the keys to his success are perseverance, getting prepared, and taking his career seriously. He also believes that it’s necessary to take good decisions when it comes to interesting projects. He recently participated in the latest remake of The Magnificent Seven, next to Denzel Washington, Matt Bomer, Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ethan Hawke and Lee Byung-Hun. Although it’s the first time that he participates in a western the genre isn’t new to him: “When I was a boy, I loved this kind of films and my dad too. We used to watch them together on Sundays.” To Manuel, being part of the cast of this remake of the 1960s film was a challenge. He had to train several weeks to ride a horse and use guns like a professional: “When I got into the set I was living the real western life, so all of us had to be very well prepared,” says Manuel.

How would you like to die? Suddenly, without feeling anything and unaware of what’s happening. Do you have a motto? There’s a phrase that has had an impact on me since the first time I read it. I try to apply it to all the things I like such as acting. I heard it from Al Pachino during an interview and Michelangelo also said it. I know it in English: “Lord, free me of myself so I can please you”. I’m sure that when Messi takes the ball, he feels free. An artist is free when he gets rid of those ideas he was raised with, don’t jump, don’t do this and that. When adults say this to children, they’re clipping their wings. If you are free of those thoughts and are genuine, that’s when you can do the best things ever. Do you have a fictional hero? Yes, a few: Batman, el Zorro, the Lone Ranger, and Spiderman. Who do you admire in real life? I admire my parents a lot. What’s the importance of English in your career? The language has opened great doors for me in the movie industry and in Hollywood. But English is not just for this business. It’s necessary and very important to know English. We’re the neighbors of one of the most powerful countries in the world. On the one hand, speaking another language gives you satisfaction. On the other, it helps you in any sort of career you pursue because it’s a plus. The more tools you have, the best you make your way in life in any field.

The paper that will make yo U succeed ccording to OCC Mundial, working on a résumé shouldn’t be the hardest thing in the world. However, it’s something we should take seriously and write carefully. It is our letter of presentation for any job interviewer. Our job opportunities depend on this paper. It’s a summary of our school life, our experience, and our best talents. Your future can change just because of this paper! There are two things that must be clear in a résumé. First, it is essential that you include truthful information in the correct place. Secondly, the way in which you present the information is just as important. Add key sections to explain why you are or will be valuable to a company. In this way, recruiters can see how prepared you are to work for the organization.

He cursado tres veces los cursos completos.

First, learning the language will help you grow professionally and personally. English represents a job opportunity to move inside an organization, but it also represents an opportunity to ensure that you can get to know, understand and get inside a different culture, which I believe is one of the most significant gifts humans have: understanding and knowing others.
