WINTER 2018 - YEARLY EDITION
So many changes are taking place in the watch industry…
I
t seems the Swatch Group decision to not return to Baselworld next year has started a trend. Or perhaps it was Movado Group, Inc. (MGI) that started it, absent from
Baselword already this year with its three major brands of Movado, Concord and EBEL, preferring to invest in more private functions with its customers. Corum announced
this month it will not return…the list is surely not finished yet.
Changes are expected at SIHH also, with Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille announcing their departures from the Geneva exhibition as of 2020. There are new arrivals though:
Hermès joined SIHH in 2018, and for the 2019 edition Bovet will be back for the first time
since 2002, for a total of 35 brands. The brands leaving the shows say it is to be in line with the strategic repositioning of their distribution channels. We’ll see if and how any of this might affect the final customer.
Another major announcement came, this time from the LVMH Group, last September 21st, to advise that Jean-Claude Biver was withdrawing from his operational responsibilities
as head of the watches division of the Group, for health reasons. He will stay on as nonexecutive Chairman and advisor.
His exceptional personality and career of over 40 years in the field of watchmaking
eventually led him to LVMH where he, notably, developed the product offer and commercial expansion of Hublot, Tag Heuer, and Zenith.

Classic elegance for any occasion
1815 ANNUAL CALENDAR: The whole year at a glance THE ANNUAL CALENDAR is a complication that has been attracting more and more followers. Its genu-ine convenience makes it a paragon of what A. Lange & Söhne refers to as a “useful innovation”. Presented in 2017, the manually wound 1815 ANNUAL CALENDAR” is a technically and aesthetically convincing implementation. An elegant and functional companion for any occasion: 1815
ANNUAL CALENDAR, photographed in a 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL by Walter Lange.
Among the numerous extra functions that can be integrated in
a wristwatch, the annual calendar is still fairly rare. But because it is so convenient, the popularity of the new-era mechanism is steadily growing. As far as its technical sophistication is
concerned, it easily matches the traditional complications.
At first sight, with its numerous displays and functions, the
annual calendar looks much like a perpetual calendar. However,
it is considerably easier to adjust because it requires no leap-year indication. Once set, the calendar module correctly switches from the 30th to the 1st day at the end of the short months
– April, June, September, and November. A manual correction
to the 1st day of the month is only necessary at the transition
from February to March. Thus, it closes the gap between the full
calendar that requires five corrections per year and the perpetual
calendar which consummately executes its four-year pro-gramme from one turn of the century to the next.
Perfect legibility even in low-light conditions: The argenté dial

indications and the subsidiary seconds.
Since 2017, in addition to the SAXONIA ANNUAL CALENDAR,
the 1815 ANNUAL CALENDAR has been the second A. Lange &
Söhne watch that only needs to be corrected once a year. With
displays inspired by historic Lange pocket watches, it appeals to
gentlemen with a predilection for classic elegance. The de-signers succeeded in not only creating a contemporary interpretation
of traditional style elements such as the analogue date, Arabic
numerals, and the railway-track minute scale but also in merging them with the three classic calendar indications – date, day of the week, and month. These indications are provided by two readily legible subsidiary dials harmoniously integrated in the argenté main dial at 9 and 3 o’clock.
The 40-millimetre case in pink or white gold accommodates the
artisanally finished manually wound calibre L051.3 movement that consists of 345 parts. The power reserve of 72 hours is
sufficient to set the watch aside for a weekend with time to spare. A German silver three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing, gold chatons, thermally blued screws, a classic screw bal-ance, and a hand-engraved balance cock with a whiplash spring are among
the artisanal quality hallmarks of the 1815 ANNUAL CALENDAR. Convenience that goes deep: If the 1815 ANNUAL CALENDAR
ever stops running off the wrist, it can be quickly and comfortably reset once rewound. Apart from three recessed correctors for
separately adjust-ing the day, month, and moon phase, a main
button adjacent to the crown allows all indications to be advanced at the same time.

Luminor Regatta Transat Classique
To celebrate the most extreme classic race in the world – 3,000 miles across the atlantic ocean – panerai has created the Luminor Transat Classique Regatta, an exclusive special edition of 150 examples of the chronograph with a reverse countdown mechanism for indicating the moments preceding the start of a race with the greatest accuracy. PANERAI PRESENTS THE LUMINOR REGATTA TRANSAT CLASSIQUE, a remarkable new watch for wearing at sea, created in only 150 examples in honour the most thrilling international regatta for classic yachts: the Panerai Transat Classique 2019. The challenge
is an epic one: in January 2019 a fleet of classic yachts will set sail from Lanzarote and cross the Atlantic Ocean, heading for their destination, St Kitts in the Caribbean Sea. The crews will face the
3,000 nautical miles of this route – which is engraved on the back
of the watch together with the logo of the race – relying only on
the excellent innovative technology incorporated in the P.9100/R automatic chronograph calibre: the push-piece at 4 o’clock stops the orange chronograph minute hand at the desired moment in
relation to the length of the countdown. When the chronograph is started, the relative hands begin to move, indicating first the minutes and seconds remaining until the start and, once the countdown is completed, the time elapsed since the start of the race.
Other functions and features enhance this precision instru-

The story first began in 2008, when Pascal Raffy, owner of

it an original face. Conversely, Pininfarina’s style inspired the BOVET watchmakers to even greater heights of innovation as they sought to fulfill Mr. Raffy’s visual and structural directive of lightness.

To this he emphasized the word “light” in two senses referencing both luminosity and weight.
As is now customary for the collection arising from this
partnership, the designers and watchmakers joined forces
from the very start of the project. They decided to give the same importance to the three main mechanical groups

technical specifications alone will satisfy the most demanding connoisseurs. A single barrel keeps the double-sided flying

architecture and design increase both the piece’s accuracy and transparency, since its attachments are practically invisible. Lastly, a spherical differential halves the time it takes to
wind the piece without increasing the torque of the winding
mechanism. This plethora of innovations led to the filing of three international patents.

the Geneva-based family-owned Manufacture. The Wright brothers’ first flight took place in

abundant creativity displayed by Vacheron

BENU Lost in Space The BENU Lost in Space is an adventure in proportions and comes in a limited edition of 26 pieces commemorating the birth of Moritz Grossmann’s in 1826. In this special timepiece, Moritz Grossmann played with the proportions and crafted the small movement 102.0 into a large case. The largest moon-shaped dial is rendered in handcut relief engraving. The smaller dial for the hour and minute displays shines with a white Grand-feu enamel. The even smaller second forms a strong contrast in black enamel.
TEFNUT 1001 Nights The TEFNUT 1001 Nights is a special jewellery watch which combines exceptional design with sophisticated construction and delights with its inner and outer beauty. Designed by Michael Koh this piece was inspired by conversations with Mohammed Seddiqi in Dubai. This beautiful jewellery watch – available in rose gold and white gold – symbolises the legend of One Thousand and One Nights, in which Scheherazade mesmerises her king with her stories. The dial shows a mysterious dune landscape

The scenery is an artistic inlay composed of precisely cut nacre segments. The iridescence of mother of pearl differs between pieces giving an emotional appeal combining nature, hightech, and craftsmanship. The Roman numerals in black harmonise with the asymmetrical guilloché pattern and the case, which rises gently from the crown to the 9 o’clock side. A ring of white brilliant-cut diamonds traces this image by widening to the side as well, creating a radiant frame for the work of art. Like the crown, the spring bars float freely on one side and are decorated with gemstone cabuchons. The calibre 102.0 in artistic hand finish also lets the watch shine from the inside.
ATUM Backpage On the ATUM Backpage, the Grossmann watchmakers have shifted the calibre 107.0, mirrored in a High-Artistic Finish, to the dial side. The characteristic movement details such as Grossmann’s balance wheel, hand-engraved balance cock and three band snailing on the ratchet wheel can be seen on the wrist. The ATUM Backpage comes in rose gold with a grey dial, and in platinum with a blue dial (limited to 18 watches worldwide). www.grossmann-uhren.com

n honor of UAE National Day, the theme for the flower arrangements at Jumeirah Al Naseem for the month of December has been inspired by one of the poems written by Dubai’s ruler His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Poetry has allowed Sheikh Mohammed to express his creative, sensitive side with his works covering a range of subjects from romance to current affairs.

The first lines of the poem translated into English are: “Our civilization is not valued by cement, words, actions, and achievements, but they are measured and valued by our thoughts, our strategy, and our minds.” This is a verse from the same poem which has been immortalised in Arabic calligraphy on a stunning stainlesssteel sculpture at the entrance to Jumeirah Al Naseem, created
by Emirati artist Mattar Bin Lahej. Alissar Flowers, the official flower partner of the luxury property, is renowned for creating unique, one-of-a-kind artistic displays. The floral specialists are also helping to bring the UAE’s heritage and history to light through culturally connected themes of flower displays at the hotel. The National Day displays – to celebrate the UAE’s 47th birthday – will ensure that the hotel is filled with a celebratory atmosphere, while reflecting Sheikh Mohammed’s appreciation of creative expression. Using more than 5,000 of the freshest flowers from across the world, the display will embody a feeling of patriotism to pay
tribute to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision and ground-breaking initiatives, the flowers will embody the visionary leader’s passion and spirit – as well as his creative flair. Alissar Flowers, worldwide leaders in the floristry industry, launched in Jordan in 1979 and has been creating memorable displays for nearly 40 years.
