providing us with programs that are useful, entertaining, and oftentimes addictive. It’s even more astounding when you realize the amount of computer processing power the average Joe has in the palm of his hand these days with the latest smart phone models. It’s your pocket or purse. Texting seems to be one of the biggest activities that I’ve noticed other folks doing on their smartphones. I say “other folks” because I rarely text. It’s usually only after someone has sent a text message to my phone that I of being able to send someone a message and not needing them to actually answer the phone. But if I’ve got something to discuss with someone and can’t meet with them in person, I prefer an old fashioned verbal exchange.

discomfort in the wrist area and is a result of repetitive stress. The blame for many of these cases was placed on the computer mouse. You do have miniature keyboards and it fascinates me to watch the dexterity with which some people are able to manipulate those tiny keys. Oftentimes it seems like their thumbs are being contorted into positions that are problems. In fact there’s even a symptom that the medical community refers to as “Texting from repetitive use and can be very painful. It also can reduce your ability to grip. That means you might not be able to operate a motorcycle. So, do us both a favor and call me and leave a voice message. I’ll call you back.

The Good, The Bad, The New Technology There’s a lot to like about all this new-fangled technology. It’s amazing when you consider all the things you can do with today’s smart phones. They can take photos, record videos, deliver and receive emails, connect to the Internet, and give access to a gazillion different apps which can be useful at home, work, or on the road. (Apps are the software programs that you can install on a smartphone.) There are a ton of free apps available and even more for sale. This has created a giant of an industry

all of those folks out there texting are actually exchanging ideas that are anything of great importance. It’s most likely along the lines of: Person 1 – I’m making coffee. Person 2 – I had two cups already. Person 2 – I’ll catch up to you. Person 1 – Probably, I’m too busy texting to continue drinking my coffee. And all of this texting by the younger generation has me extremely concerned about the future health implications they might encounter. Our goal was to focus on motorcycles and bring in the other publications. We’ve done that through the years and this issue is another example of the diversity we offer. Harley-Davidson Project Livewire™

By Miller Langhorne So will future Harley-Davidson merchandise displays include leatherbraided extension cords? The electric Harley-Davidson motorcycle seemed to catch a lot of people by surprise when the word came down from their Milwaukee headquarters on June 19th. They call it Project Livewire and touring around the country, you won’t

in soon. In a video that was released prior to the big announcement on a website for Harley-Davidson Investor Relations, company CFO John Olin explained that, “It’s important to note that this motorcycle is not available for purchase. For now our goal with Project Livewire is to gather feedback on the motorcycle and market potential.” I’ve got to give Harley some credit for taking a measured approach to entering the electric vehicle market. It’s still a relatively young industry with many yet to be answered questions about how much range can you get out of a single charge? How long do I have to wait to get a full recharge? Where can I get a recharge when I’m away from home? How safe are the batteries? Also, how long will they last and how much will it cost to replace them? And of course, how

6

do I attach some loud pipes to one of these things? The Project Livewire bike itself seems to me the proper mix of Harley tradition and modern styling. The Motor Company hasn’t released a whole lot of info on specs and such but I can tell you a few things that are already known. It’s got an aggressive sport-bike look to it with a cast aluminum frame weighing just 14 pounds and holding a longitudinally mounted three-phase AC motor. The engine is rated at 74 horsepower with 52 poundfeet of torque and is oil cooled. Harley says the bike will accelerate from a stop to 60mph in less than 4 seconds and hit a top speed just over 90mph. There are no gears to shift and two ride modes to choose from, Range or Power, depending on whether you’re looking to go a little farther or a little faster I suppose. Charging time for the lithium-ion battery is estimated to be about 3 ½ hours. Riding range is estimated to be about 50 miles or so which will need to be greatly improved for the bike to be practical for everyday use. An LED headlight shows the way and the rubber meets the road with a 120/70-18 front tire and a 180/5517 holding up the rear. The aluminum wheels have hollow spokes in another effort to reduce weight. On top of the handlebars, replacing the traditional tach and speedo, is a rectangular computer console. The rumble of potato, potato,

potato has been replaced with a highpitched whirring sound that many have care to give it a listen, go to the website at www.projectlivewire.com. The website has additional information about the bike and the tour that’s underway. The specs above apply to the tuned should it reach production stage. Company execs have described the bike as a work in progress and an opportunity to see what their customers want in an electric motorcycle. To meet that end they’ve put together a promotional tour called Project Livewire which will take the bikes down historic Route 66 and then across the USA to more than 30 dealerships in 2014. The tour will be expanded to Canada and Europe in 2015. Florida riders take note: the tour is scheduled to be here in December with stops in Miami (12/4), Tampa (12/11), and Jacksonville (12/18). I’m predicting long lines at every stop along the tour as this will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to ride a company’s prototype machine. Even non-riders will have a chance to get the feel of riding through a simulated riding experience called Jumpstart you might want to buy it. Long term plans for producing and marketing the bike will give them. Newswire Continued On Page 35

Are You Ready to Ride That Mountain Road?

By Bernie Stevens Although we have plenty of roads in Florida that twist and turn, we don’t have mountain roads. That’s why many readers of Go For A Ride have bucket lists that include traveling to Maine, Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia, and other mountainous states to ride roads with switchbacks and more curves than me. While riding mountain roads with tight switchbacks and “S” turns can be great fun on a motorcycle, according to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (MSF), the number one cause of motorcycle accidents is running off the road while cornering. Although one rides cautiously and within the speed limit, unexpected road hazards like sand, oil slicks, gravel, and wet roads are common in the mountains. Ice can be a problem at higher elevations even in the spring and summer. Before you take on any road, but

comfort by riding through curves and sets of curves on some of your favorite roads using various legal speeds, lean angles, and positions while staying in your lane. If you ride with a passenger, make sure that person is on the bike as you practice. Taking an advanced rider class that offers extensive training in counter-steering, which is essential for maneuvering through curves and switchbacks, may also help you improve your control over your motorcycle. If you’re riding with a group, practice with them on familiar curvy roads before you take on new mountain roads, especially most of the ones I write about. If you are unsure you’re ready to “ride with the big dogs,” here are a few hints make certain your tires are not worn from the MSF that might help you decide your suspension is set properly to handle you need a bit more practice before its load. Finally, and perhaps most heading to The Tail of the Dragon or important, be positive you know how to similar roads. 1. You approach a curve so fast, you maneuver your motorcycle correctly. have to brake hard before you enter the curve.

5. You try to keep up with other riders despite the fact it’s risky and you are uncomfortable. 6. You’re feeling fatigued because you’re gripping your handgrips too tightly while trying to force your bike through the curve. when counter-steering. 8. You’re so focused on the cornering techniques that you are ignoring obstacles in the road or an oncoming car or bus drifting (encroaching) into your lane. 9. That “little safety voice” inside your head is telling you to slow down. 10. You’re feeling uncomfortable and/or nervous.

Road Chapters

By Clay Douglass Chapter Three: Mickey and the Boys (This is another report from the road by Clay Douglass as he and his wife make their motorcycle journey from the Florida Keys to Alaska this summer.) Our 287 mile ride from Beaumont to Burleson was perfect. A light breeze, clear skies made for a great ride. Our nephew, Mickey, was home by the time we arrived. Mickey is a machinist\ engine builder for Reher Morrison Racing Engines in Arlington TX. His home has a large yard bordered at the rear by horse pastures. Hawks and Kites frequent his back yard. Sometimes at head height. Mickey is the pet of two canines. They are kind to him and treat him well. Hershey, a very large chocolate Lab and Spot, a stout Staffordshire terrier are good natured. Both have interesting personalities. Hershey is a hulking best friend that is always by your side. He would be a handful if provoked. Spot has the coloration of a Dalmatian but the shape of a Staffordshire, which is similar to the more common Pit Bull. Spot has the “Joe Cool” routine down pat. Spot has quite a way with the ladies. He has a way of holding his head as if he is looking at something off in the distant. 10

At just the right moment he will move one eye and slowly gaze into the eyes of the unsuspecting lady. Another heart is stolen! Lance Romance has nothing on Spot. It has taken Hershey and Spot a lot of time and effort to train Mickey but they have done an excellent job. For instance, they really don’t like being left behind. As Mickey had put over 100,000 miles on his 2004 Fat Boy by 2009, he tends to ride more than most. This being an issue to Hershey and Spot, aka “the boys”, they instructed Mickey to get busy and come up with a way for them to go for a ride or else. Mickey caved quickly and built a 2005 springer soft tail with a Liberty sidecar just for them. The boys were pleased with his effort but not too high for Hershey, which made it hard for him to stay put in the twisties. addition, the standard unit required both of the boys to jump into the sidecar. This was absolutely a deal breaker as Hershey is getting on in years and does not like to jump. Two bites to the rump later Mickey got busy and produced a door. A comfortable carpet was next on the list of requests. This was merely one of many

sidecar unit looks much like a 1948 stock HD big twin unit. This is very cool. We were able to assist Mickey installing a few of the many mods required by the a special memory. We were also able to convince the boys to force Mickey to join us on our ride to Possum Kingdom State Park near Graham, TX. I think Mickey did! Our stay in Burleson with Hershey, Spot and Mickey was lots of fun for all. Mickey had to work the next day so he and the boys rode back home while we settled in for the night. The latest news is that the boys have 3000 miles logged in the MHS Express. Possum Kingdom State Park has over a hundred campsites. About 3 were occupied when we arrived. The park overlooks a lake. The campsites have water and electric. We chose Possum Kingdom because we had stopped in Wausau, FL when passing through the Florida panhandle. Wausau is the home of the Possum festival. That is no joke. Sometimes everything just goes your way. That night the stars were highly visible. The planets as well, especially Mars was very brilliant. Janie and I

Biker With A Badge By M. W. Simpson

One news item that caught my eye was a transportation bill that is being attempted to be fast tracked by the White House. I would encourage you to pay close attention to this bill. I can’t believe some egg-head came up with this acronym for the “Grow America Act”. Generating Renewal, Opportunity and and Rebuilding of Infrastructure and Communities throughout America. It is destined to replace MAP-21. When you read it on the surface you think, “Well, that’s not a bad idea” to have safer bridges and roads and more public transportation. But as you read deeper, you start to wonder about comments that will allow DOT more absolute power. One little sentence I found tucked away was, “Allows the Department to be more engaged in motorcycle helmet policy discussions in the States”. Can you say… ”federal helmet laws?” There is language that talks about inspection of auto dealerships to see if a vehicle conforms to the federal fuel standards and that they could impound vehicles right off car lots for the sole purpose of checking the conformability of the vehicle. Then there is talk about public transportation, I.E. buses, bike lanes, tunnels, bridges and light rail. It dawned on me that you need real estate for those, so some poor home/land owner may be in for a rude awakening by a knock on the door and the land-grabbing-cops telling you that a train is coming through…now get out! This is a 302 BILLION dollar, over 4 years, project. But wait business owners… there’s more! This tax plan, and believe me that’s what it is, will be supplementing the current revenue with $150 billion in the form of one-time transition revenue from pro-growth business tax reform. I’m certainly not an expert here, but on 18

Hopefully better heads will prevail such as John Hoeven, (R-N.D.) and Amy Klobuchar, (D-MN). They have introduced an amendment to the “Drivers Privacy Act” that adds motorcycles to the language and keeps data the property of the owner of the vehicle private. It would take a court order to retrieve the information. How novel, two members of the two political parties working together to protect the 4th amendment. So watch-dogs unite! Contact your congress-people, be involved. Soap box put away. Once again a spirited debated was made over the use of HID lights. Are they legal in Florida? If you read the law, they are. Where the law generalizes is the term that original equipment cannot be changed. However, if you have your head lamps properly aimed so they they are white light, you shouldn’t have any problems. The color is usually the reason vehicles get pulled over. Yellow headlights are not permitted. The blue lights that everyone claims are pure white doesn’t cut it either. Just run white and you should be ok. I installed a white LED headlight bulb and it works great. Here is the Florida Vehicle Code 316.220, regarding headlights on motor vehicles…316.220 Headlamps on motor vehicles.— (1) Every motor vehicle shall be equipped with at least two headlamps with at least one on each side of the front of the motor vehicle and shall comply with the requirements and limitations set forth in this chapter, and shall show a white w w w.gofarmag.com

Motorcycle Insurance - 101

By Leslie Kay A motorcycle is a significant investment. Before you head out on the highway you owe it to yourself to make sure your insurance is up-to-date and you’re properly covered. Riding a motorcycle is very different than driving a car. Riders should know that their motorcycle insurance needs are different too. Here are some tips: Update your Policy: Verify that all your coverage is in force. When riding season starts if you are a “Snow Bird” make sure you are not using a winter lay-away program that will restrict some coverage during specified dates. Note any changes such as additional riders or a new garaging address. A quick call to your agent or insurance company will ensure coverage that reflects your current needs. Trip Planning: Will you be traveling on your bike? Canada requires a special identification card and it needs to be requested from your insurance carrier 7 to 10 days minimum in advance of your trip. If you want to cross into Canada no proof of insurance could derail your vacation. Does

24

your policy include roadside assistance, and Trip interruption coverage? What if you break down away from home? Make sure you have this valuable coverage and that you know what the limits and limitations are. Liability Coverage: If you have significant assets, it is to your benefit to carry a higher limit just in case you are involved in an accident that causes injury or damage to someone else’s body or property. Also if you have an Umbrella policy in place you may be required by that policy to carry a certain minimum limit of liability on your vehicle policies. Medical Payments Coverage: Medical payments coverage pays your medical bills as well as your passenger’s and is available in limits up to $25,000.00 in most states. Make sure custom parts and equipment are covered: Additional parts such as chrome accessories, a custom paint job, decorative LED Lights, saddlebags or special rims increase the value of your motorcycle and may not be covered. If you’ve added any custom parts or equipment, you’ll want to check your policy or call your agent to make sure they’re covered. Be sure to

w w w.gofarmag.com

keep your receipts and photos of your bike with the enhancements shown. Know your options: Rates can vary so shop around to see if another company offers you a better rate or if you qualify for any discounts. If you have comprehensive and collision coverage, consider raising your deductibles. Doing so can help to lower the cost of your policy. Ask for discounts! Anti-Lock Brakes, LoJack, & Safety Course discounts may be available to you. You could get discounts for multi-cycle, and for multi-policy. Also having all of your eggs in one basket may not always be the way to get the best rate. You may benefit from having your motorcycle insurance with an agent or company that specializes in motorcycle. Notify your agent or company of changes: We cannot change your policy via e-mail, voice mail, text message, facebook, carrier pigeon or a call from your 3rd cousin. We need to talk to you the insured to make changes to your policy. Never rely on any electronic media to make changes to your policy. It is always best to speak to Continued On Page 35

The Little River Dream Ride

By Michael Hixson

endo over a jump where I hung onto

Being a “biker” typically means that you are a non-conformist, you enjoy your freedom and love that wind in your hair while riding down a winding road to someplace that serves a great slice of pie. OK, maybe I like pie. Sometimes you are pegged as being a bit wild or maybe even crazy by those who don’t understand and by some who do. My personal crazy list is out there for some but tame for the really hard-core biker. As a teenager I learned to ride in the dirt and make jumps, power slide through turns and became an expert at a move called the “endo”. That happens when you lock your knees and hit a bump

drive to his house in Shawboro, North Carolina, near Elizabeth City and pick up a 1989 Sportster 883 4-speed. Then I am going to ride this 883 back to Florida which is right at 800 miles if I ride I-95 but I am taking hwy 17 down along the coast and adding a few miles. When I mentioned this to some of the pelicans at Gulf Coast HD they said that I should invest in that “Monkey-butt” stuff. When I mentioned some of those other trips I was asked how old I was when I did that. Does that really matter? We’ll see. Since I have a very hard head to go with my hard a$$ I am still looking forward to a great trip and maybe even a new “biker” adventure. Today I have boxed up a few tools to send them ahead so that I don’t have to

with the bike and about another 30 feet without the bike. After rolling through a ditch and bouncing to my feet I walked back to the bike which was still running, and reached down to hit the kill switch when I realized that my arm and shoulder did not work. Fortunately I somehow survived my biker youth. After my sister’s wedding I rode a Kawasaki Z1000 from Indiana and down the West Virginia turnpike to Wytheville, Virginia with patches of Ice on the road. It was so cold that I would stop every so often and place my frozen hands down around the engine to warm up. Once I even rode a Suzuki 750 water-cooled bike line is that I learned not to lock my knees, from Ft Campbell, Kentucky through the tail of a tornado on my way to see a girl (and also how to bounce and roll). Racing in the dirt became a passion in Clendenin, West Virginia. Weather and on the sissy bar. This way I just look like I and jumping things just felt good except distance have never been a consideration am carrying a lunch box onto the plane. What I have packed so far includes an for the time that I broke my collar- before. extra pair of jeans, a short sleeve teebone. What happened was a high speed Virginia and meeting my brother. Riding a motorcycle means on board storage might not be in abundance. Especially if you’re riding a tricked out custom and absolutely abhor the idea of saddle bags or some other large piece of chunky luggage the bike out and showing it off is one of your favorite pastimes but where do you put your cell phone, reading glasses, gas and credit cards, garage door opener, or loose change for the toll booth, and, if you’re a lady, all those many combs, brushes, and cosmetic items that you’ve your pockets isn’t a good solution. You need something that’s functional, yet unobtrusive. I think Pistol Pockets might be the solution. I recently received the Handle Bar Bag and the T-Bar Bag from them and it’s easy to see how useful they can be for those short trips around town, going to bike night, or hitting a local poker run. Each has a zippered opening across the top with a tab that allows you to lock it should you desire. The bags are made in the USA in San Diego and constructed of water resistant 600 Denier polyester with a PVC backed material to give it some support. The T-Bar Bag is 11” wide by 7” tall and 1.75” deep. The round Handle Bar Bag is 11” wide by 5” tall and 4” deep

and has some additional foam padding. Heavy duty webbed straps with Velcro provide secure mounting to the bike. Where on the bike? I think that depends on your bike. The handle bars work well as do some windshield brackets. Passenger back rests and highway bars are also options. My suggestion is to take some measurements and look at your options for attaching the bags before you order. For my bike the Handle Bar Bag works great but my passenger back rest is too narrow for the T-Bar bag.

I will note that there are two warnings they are not intended to be used while in motion. Safety First! The other warning states that this is a novelty item and is not intended to be used to carry concealed

You can get more information on these bags and the other products they offer from their website at pistolpockets.com or give them a call at 208-720-5961.

High up in the San Juan Mountains the Million Dollar Highway is part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. I don’t know how scenic it really is, all I could do is pretty much watch my front tire, scared to death not get to close to the center line for fear of cars drifting across the zipper at each hair pin curve and trying not to drift too close the shoulder. I actually think I held my breath for the entire 24 mile trip! There you have it, a few of my favorite roads. Pick one or two, or all, and just go. Rollin With Rikki

Yes, it’s true. I was MIA last month but I survived almost 3 weeks of bronchial problems and some kind of stomach infection. As riders, you know I have to be really down when even “Angel” couldn’t “go for a ride”. Thank you to all who sent messages, emails and calls wishing me a speedy recovery. I was told that’s what friends are for. Ok, I got it. I hope everyone had a safe 4th of July. Mine was great spending the evening on Ft. Myers Beach with good friends, lots of The ride home was perfect...not hot, not cold just “biker right”. Despite the sickness and of course, all the “Florida Sunshine” that’s been on a nice ride to Arcadia with a couple girlfriends. We stopped at a little diner downtown and enjoyed some “homecooked meals.” Though we were already stuffed, I was persuaded to split a piece of their famous Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. Delicious! Along with the friendly service and great food, it was well worth the ride. The sky was looking pretty dark so we started heading back. Donta made it home dry but Wendy and I weren’t as lucky...we were both soaked to the bone before we reached home. So goes Florida riding at its best. On a little more serious note, in the April 2014 issue, I wrote about a young man I had the pleasure of meeting at Ft. Myers Bike Night. Ethan was a 12 year old young man who arrived on the back of a trike that day escorted by the Lost Riders. He was very sweet and had a great sense of humor. But he also had been battling brain cancer for almost 32

2 years. But that didn’t hold him down. He loved bikes, cars and everyone he met. October 13, 2013 he was honored with the title of honorary Marine. His mother, Maria, was also a Marine. On July 3rd, this courageous young man lost his battle with cancer. Thanks to the Marine Corp, Leathernecks MC, the Patriot Guard Riders, the Lost Riders, the Latin American Motorcycle Association, many close friends and relatives, a group from B.A.C.A. and a special guest from the Pentagon, Ethan had probably the largest funeral I have ever attended. It was a full military service followed by an Irish Wake. More than 150 bikes rode to pay their respect. Ethan will be remembered by all. Maria has a website on FB called ‘Ethans Journey’. They will soon be launching a foundation to help other children with terminal diagnosis to begin their “bucket lists” so they can make memories by marking off as much as they can, while they still can. Check out the postings. I know I sound like a broken record but I always like to remind everyone to PLEASE VISIT OUR ADVERTISERS. They need our support during the summer as well as the rest of the year. Don’t forget to mention you saw them in Go For A Ride magazine. And as always, ride safe and we will see you somewhere on the road! Rikki - “RollinWithRikki”

Continued From Page 6 What will this thing cost? Who knows. Since this is not being offered for sale there hasn’t been a retail price disclosed. And since there’s no guarantee that the bike will ever actually make it to market, we can all take a guess at the number. I can tell you that other electric motorcycles which would be in this performance category, like the Zero SR and the Brammo Empulse, are in the $18K price neighborhood. In recent years Harley-Davidson did what some thought was unthinkable and added liquid cooling to some of the engines in its model lineup. And the earth kept on spinning. It’s easy to see that the company is taking a forward looking approach to the technology changes that are occurring and looking at how best to incorporate the advances into their business strategy. Harley refers to these changes as being

Go For A Ride Magazine By Lowell Anderson

Finding Inspiration Over the years I have found a lot of inspiration from the motocross community. I have mentioned in previous articles how inspired I have been by some of the older guys that I ride with. It is amazing to see some of these guys ride. Seeing a guy in his sixties whip a bike over a triple is really inspiring to me. I mean this isn’t golf here. This is motocross and this guy is still doing it. Surely his friends are telling him the same stuff I hear. “You’re too old to be doing that stuff.” I guarantee you the old guys out there are still riding for the same reason I do. They love it.

Kruisin’ with Kati Ok here it is, just because I’m not in the saddle yet doesn’t mean I have stopped living. Not every second of our life has to be about riding, does it? I wasn’t going to put anything in the mag this month because I haven’t been riding but at the last minute I changed my mind. Women are allowed to do this, right? I have a question for you riders that haul animals around on the backseat. Guess what? I just got a dog given to me to keep for a couple of days and it’s now been a couple weeks so I’ve claimed her as my girl. She’s a big dog, Florida Kur or something. I have these visions of having her ride on the back seat with me once I get going again. I will have a trike and they’re big so there shouldn’t be a space problem. Where do I learn about having an animal ride with me? I wouldn’t want Bella to get hurt in any way. I’m thinking that in the summer time she wouldn’t be able to ride because it’s too hot right? If anyone has some suggestions or info for me please drop me a line at Kruisinwithkati@aol. com or visit me on Facebook Kruisinwith Kati… I’d like to thank my son Derek for bringing this dog into my life, it’s really aiding in my recovery.. makes me get off my rear and exercise my bad areas more than I would be doing otherwise.

place to eat. Tom and I took a ride down to south Ft Myers to Gigi’s restaurant, map we put out last month. The maps are still in various bike shops if you haven’t picked yours up yet. Gigi’s is in the Days food was excellent, service was right up there too. Scenery was cool, we could look at the pool area or the Big tiki bar just on the other side of the pool. Bikes were continuously pulling in there while I was enjoying my breakfast. Ok that’s it for this August edition… the time being but should be back in the saddle in a couple months. Cross Your Fingers for me!! I am enclosing a photo of my Big girl… Biker friends, meet Bella…

Travel Tale Continued

Continued From Page 31 Forks runs into 158 and I rode it toward 17 in Elizabeth City. After a very quick stop for a breakfast sandwich at the local Hardees I continued to ride. At 23 miles down the road the bike began to sputter and choke and even quit. When I let it set for a minute it would start up and I was able to ride again. One mile down the road and it started with the sputtering again. This cannot be happening. How am I gonna’ get to Florida like this? There were not a lot of places to pull over with 17 running out through the country like this so when I came upon a “DuckThru”, which is like a 7-11, I pulled in to call and let my brother know that I was having a problem. In days gone by I would not have let anything stop me on a ride. My younger a gum wrapper, a couple of safety pins and some peanut brittle. Since I don’t have any of that I stopped 53 miles into the trip at an Advanced Auto parts in Edenton, N.C. This bike was acting like it was vapor locking or not getting enough gas so I bought a bucket, a funnel and a the counter. This bike has a petcock so I shut it off and removed the existing fuel line and then attached the new 12 inch piece and pointed it toward the bucket. After turning the petcock back to the on No apparent blockage at the tank or the valve. When I had about an inch of fuel in the bucket I noticed some black crud, like sand at the bottom. Ahaa! This might have something to do with the problem. Now I was on to something so I removed the entire fuel line and noticed

than the fuel so it stayed in the bucket until last and of course I left it out. When I turned the petcock back on there were no leaks so I put the bucket, funnel and a hand towel in the trash barrel and loaded back up. After a few seconds to allow the At least it didn’t explode! It has dawned on me that this bike doesn’t have a name. The girls in the auto parts store were very helpful and really sweet. One of them was a Sara and I could use a little sweetness for the rest of this ride so from this day forward the little 883 shall be named Sara. Now that Sara was purring like a kitten we headed back south on 17 and stopped only once for gas until we got to the New Bern N.C. Harley-Davidson shop. It is a small dealership and while not unfriendly it was not what I expected from a Harley dealership so Sara and I rode on. Stopping only for gas we rode to Jacksonville, N.C. which is just outside of Camp Lejeune Marine base. Somewhere along the way I lost 17 in Wilmington so I set the GPS to go to Myrtle Beach since that is just past Little River. The GPS took me to Kure Beach and I was confused since there was no bridge and I was on a little spit of land with a lot of water to cross. My swimming skills are pretty good but I am not sure how good with a Harley around my neck. The GPS had actually led me to the Fort Fisher ferry boat which crossed the Atlantic behind Bald Head Island and put us off in Southport N.C. It only cost 3 dollars and Sara and I enjoyed the stiff breeze on the crossing. From Southport we rode north on 211 until we reached 17 again. Just over the South Carolina line I reached Little River and started checking gas stations for hot

crud. While the tank continued to drain 5 gas stations just on 17 in Little River. No into the bucket I returned to the parts joy! Oh well it was a great dream anyway. Myrtle Beach Harley was really some hand towels and a roll of paper crowded so I did not stop. There were towels. After cleaning the fuel lines I thousands of bikers in Myrtle Beach so they must have had a rally or something least at the carburetor end. The tank was going on. Sara and I did stop at a vacant now empty so I re-attached the petcock gas station to adjust the chain a little bit. end as well. There was a rattle when I let off of the After placing the funnel into the fuel throttle so I snugged it up. Once outside of Myrtle Beach we were it to catch any sand or crud and poured out in the country and the sun was getting the fuel back in. The crud was heavier low. We did not have any hot sauce along 40

so I pulled a bandana across my face to block a few bugs. Without a windshield and a fairing like I have been used to on the Electra-glide classic, I was in the aren’t half bad with a little hot sauce. Instead of riding through Charleston in the dark I rode on 17A and rode by in the swampland until I reached interstate 95 just east of Savannah, Ga. That is where Sara and I spent the night. Not exactly a hammock between two trees like I used to do in my younger days but a $36 a night motel will have to do. At 06:30AM Sara and I started again and rode down 95 in a sprint to get home for the last 375 miles. The only stops would be for gas. After passing Jacksonville and turning right on Hwy 10 and then getting onto Hwy 301 I did stop for a few extra minutes so that Sara could catch her breath and enjoy herself. She has never been to Florida before, at least not with me. Besides I met a girl and before we said our goodbyes. We rode on through Waldo without getting a ticket and reached I-75 at Gainesville. We continued south and turned off onto Hwy 50 at Brooksville and then took 41 down to 52 and turned right onto the home stretch. A quick left onto Moon Lake Road and then right at Ridge there was no stopping us now. Sara turned left into River Ridge and left again into the Oaks like she knew where she was going. We made it home after riding nearly 900 miles, part of it on a boat, and with only one minor problem with the fuel system along the way. This morning Sara is still in the garage sleeping at her new home and I have had a great night’s sleep. It is great to be home and I will not soon forget the Little River Dream Ride!
