Well, this map is the answer. By the way, interactive versions of the maps are available on our website. WWW.GOFARMAG.COM. That’s our website and it’s been completely redesigned in the past month and is now compatible on all kinds of mobile devices. Along with the aforementioned interactive maps, we’ve got many stories and columns from previous issues now available online for your reading pleasure. We know a lot of you save the back issues for the information or maps inside and now you can find some of that great content online. How long is that? 7 years. I guess there’s a chance this might work out. But, as anyone in this business will likely tell you, you never really ‘make’ it. Each issue is a new adventure gathering everything needed from everyone involved in time to make deadline. Securing sufficient advertising to cover all the costs involved with putting it together is a never ending challenge. Profit? I think that’s mostly a myth. But as they say, find something you love doing and it’s not really work. Well, they lied, this is a

lot of work. But I do love it. At least most days. The Go FAR adventure has been a very interesting and entertaining ride thus far. Our survival can be attributed to two things: Advertisers and Readers. Looking back at the first few issues, the ad spaces sold were few but with each issue we found new supporters. Competing for the advertising dollars available is not easy. Marketing budgets get smaller each year and there are a dozen or more other motorcycle monthlies hitting up the same businesses. And since printing that first issue, social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have added to the methods for businesses to communicate with potential customers. The problem there is how do you effectively cover all of those sites and how do you determine which ones will be good for growing your business? As I’ve said before, printed matter has been around for a long time and still plays a major role in promoting businesses and events. And to all of the business and event organizers who’ve advertised with us, I say “Thank You Very Much”. To our readers I say Thank You for supporting our advertisers. If the businesses don’t see support from a magazine’s readers, the magazine will lose the advertising for sure. A lot of our advertisers will point out to me that when customers come in they’ll tell them they saw the ad in Go FAR. Thank you for doing that, it really does help. And thanks to all of you for giving your support to this magazine. As noted above, there are a lot of motorcycle monthlies for you to choose from. I’m glad we’re one of them.

Riding 89-A to Flagstaff
By Bernie Stevens
I previously wrote about our journey from Bridgeport, Texas to Cottonwood, Arizona and a few of the bumps we hit due to the horrendous winds in west Texas and New Mexico. In this part of the country the constant winds are the same every spring. They are strong with gusts as high as 60 mph. Interstate 40 is often closed when the wind gets really wild. As we headed west, we watched 18-wheelers being blown around like toys. It was extremely difficult to keep our RV in one lane. Fortunately the traffic was light. The riders of the only
8
two motorcycles we saw were hunkered down and obviously not enjoying themselves. Drastic changes in temperatures are also common. It’s wise for riders to carry all of their leathers, including face masks. Interstate 40 is like a roller coaster, going from low elevations to ones over 5,000’, sometimes in a matter of miles. We experienced temperatures in the 30’s during the day and night, although the average this year was high 50’s during the day and low-40’s at night. It’s not unusual for areas like Flagstaff to get snow in April.
gofarmag.com
We had to replace the shroud for one of our air conditioning units that had been blown off during our trip through New Mexico. It was a good thing we called to check on the size of the box. It was 2.5’x3.5’. Uh oh…can’t secure that on the bike. We had no choice but to rent a car to go to Flagstaff to pick it up. It was a good thing we did. Taking I-17 was an option; however, we wanted something different. We were on a reconnaissance mission, checking out roads for future day rides. Numerous people encouraged us to take 89-A to Flagstaff. This became our favorite road to ride in central Arizona because it offers spectacular scenery, twists, curves, and fun in every mile! We eventually rode it from the Flagstaff area to Prescott. The section of 89-A from Cottonwood to Sedona doesn’t require years of riding experience or special expertise; all riders can enjoy it. The scenery just outside Cottonwood included rolling hills and prairies with canyon walls in the distance. Within twenty minutes we were in Sedona. There are no words to describe our first sighting of Sedona other than, “WOW!” The red rock formations are phenomenal! We made certain we noted the roads we wanted to ride. Within moments of leaving Sedona, we were in Oak Creek Canyon enjoying pine forests, canyon walls, and the type of mountain road that riders on sports bikes adore. For those of us who enjoy “smelling the roses” as we ride, it’s just as much fun. All riders should feel comfortable with maneuvering blind curves and switchbacks when riding 89-A through this canyon. Also, a rider should not panic when coming face-to-face with an on-coming vehicle encroaching on his lane. Rich and I have been in that situation several times. When there was no escape route, we simply stopped and allowed the other driver to maneuver the curve. No problem. All intelligent drivers around us understood. Rigs over 50’ are forbidden on this section of 89-A. I spoke to the owner of a 42’ motor coach who told me he would never drive it through Oak Creek Canyon again. Once was enough. It’s best to take I-17 to a campground, park your rig, and ride your bike on this magnificent road. We stopped briefly at an overlook to admire the road we had just traveled and chatted with several RV’ing bikers

from Alberta, Canada. We left there and followed 89-A to its end at I-17. We took 1-17 North into Flagstaff, turned west on I-40 and headed to the Camping World in Bellmonte. Well, what do you know…right there on the same road as Camping World was a Harley-Davidson dealership and the “66 Restaurant”! We stopped there after we picked up the shroud. I needed something heavier than the long-sleeved top I had on. Remember that snow I mentioned earlier? Well, it was snowing full blast when we came out of Camping World. The temperature had also dropped significantly.
Grand Canyon Harley’s 66 Restaurant You can’t complain about the way something is cooked at the 66 Restaurant, because you grill what you order. The menu is limited – chicken, steaks, and hamburgers - or you can order one of three prepared sandwiches. Your meal includes unlimited access to a crock of beans, corn on the cob, and a salad bar with all types of cheeses for hamburgers and other condiments. As we were enjoying our meal, we watched a snow storm engulf the San Francisco Peaks. Within forty minutes they went from being snow-covered pinnacles bathed in bright sunlight to being completely covered by dark gray storm clouds. We returned to Cottonwood via I-17 south. We watched the temperature rise ten degrees in ten minutes because of the drop in elevation. Back at our coach, we turned on the furnace, made a hearty soup for dinner, and planned our ride to Arizona’s largest ghost city. I hope you got to read my article in the May issue of Go For A Ride about Jerome. This is one of the day trips we took that entailed riding another gofarmag.com

portion of 89-A, both southbound and northbound. It was rather steep as we approached downtown Jerome. It also included switchbacks and sharp curves. For those of you who have RV’s, visit our website – http://rvingbikers.com for information about RV parks in the Coconino State Park area. You may have to check the April “Archives” for it. Cottonwood is the perfect base when enjoying all central Arizona has to offer. There are several RV parks and chain hotels, including a Best Western at the corner of Main Street and Route 260. Be sure to catch my next article about riding Arizona in Go FAR. In the meantime, please support the sponsors of this magazine. Ride often and ride safe!

Road Chapters By Clay Douglass
Chapter Two: On The Road Again! (This is another report from the road by Clay Douglass as he and his wife make their motorcycle trip from the Florida Keys to Alaska this summer.)
We left Key West this week after several weeks of taking care of items related to our family, home, boat, motorcycle and trailer. The “to do list” was pages long, but about 3 days prior to our planned departure all points had been addressed. You would think that would have made us relax but it had the opposite effect. We were so keyed up having nothing to do was worse than having too much to do. Fortunately or unfortunately, I was wrong. The morning of our departure we had more to pack than space available. Resolving this problem took us until noon. Now we had to make it to Okeechobee, FL before the front along with the rain did. Our friends, Rex & Irene, have a winter home there. We hoped to see them prior to their leaving for their summer home in Ontario. The sky was threatening when we passed Belle Glade, FL. Shortly thereafter we could see a couple approaching that resembled Rex & Irene. We gawked at the couple as they rode by realizing that it was our friends. They had not brought their rain gear which inspired Rex to set a brisk pace on the way back to the Big O. Folks, that is an understatement! We made it to Okeechobee in record time and fairly dry. For the next couple of days we were lucky that the weather prevented us from moving along which gave us time to have a great visit with our friends before they headed back to Canada and we moved on our way. The skies cleared and we packed up and headed out with Johnny Horton’s 10
“North to Alaska” playing in my head. We refueled at Yeehaw Junction and added some clothing, but apparently not enough. By the time we reached Leesburg we had to stop and add another layer. The gathering clouds caused the temperature to drop and, along with some sprinkles of rain, made us wish we had put on more by the time we arrived in Chiefland, FL. Traveling via the interstate is the norm for me when I’m doing Iron Butt Association (IBA) or Long Distance Rider (LDR) events. The opposite is true when Janie and I are on tour. We enjoy the back roads especially those with lots of curves. A curve is a rare item in South Florida but then can be found a little north. We took US 441 north from Okeechobee to Kenansville then FL 523 to St. Cloud. FL523 tends to have little traffic which makes it far more enjoyable than the turnpike. From St. Cloud to Wildwood we joined the madness of the turnpike and I-75 where we took FL44 to the gulf coast. US98 is four lanes on good roads that lead toward the Florida panhandle and our second stop in Wausau, FL. Wausau is home to the annual Possum Festival. That is not a joke! It is also the home of our friends, Mike & Shelia. A couple of days of catching up and playing in Mike’s woodworking shop were fun for all. We were rested prior to taking on the worst section of our trip, I-10 to Hammond, LA. The coastal road would have been more scenic but we needed to put on some miles west. At Hammond we turned south toward Grand Isle, LA. LA22 took us through the bayous and farmland. Along the way we stopped at
gofarmag.com
Oak Alley Plantation. This well maintained site is located on the Mississippi River. It was well worth a tour of the grounds and house. The delicious mint julep will take you back in time. We stayed on various state roads all the way to Grand Isle. Fifty four years ago Grand Isle was a sleepy fishing village. I was a boy chasing ghost crabs on the beach and fishing the bay waters with my Dad. Fishing is still part of the culture, however, black gold is the major player today. Supply vessels dot the waterfront. Many oil platforms are within sight of the beach. One constant in the area is the friendly Cajuns. We left Grand Isle expecting to make it to Beaumont, TX that day. The sky was clear as we rolled along at 60mph. A tractor trailer rig followed us across the wetlands when all hell broke loose. Our rear tire had blown out! The rear of the bike swung wildly from side to side. One shoulder was water, the other was marsh. Neither looked inviting. I hoped we wouldn’t end up in either or as a hood ornament for the truck. Janie and I kept our weight on our feet and hung on. We had stopped on the narrow shoulder for only a few minutes when Mark Guidroz stopped to check on us. The tire had a large hole in it and had separated from the wheel. There was no way we could make a repair with the tools at hand. Mark called his boss, Daryl Richoux, who happened to have an enclosed cargo trailer. Bottom line is that these fine folks took us and the Crazy Horse to an auto tire shop and got us rolling again. On top of that they refused to accept a penny. The tire was in bad shape so we stopped at Bayou HD in Houma, LA and had new rubber installed front and rear. Mark and his friends made what could have been a very bad day a very pleasant memory.

Specifications CRF450R
2015 Honda CRF450R
The CRF450R incorporates numerous changes throughout the engine for 2015 to yield higher performance, added durability and an extra level of tuning adjustability to match track conditions. An innovative Engine Mode Select button— an industry first among motocross machines—allows the rider to easily select one of three different EFI/ignition maps. An HRC® accessory tuning tool can be used to program custom maps actuated by the Engine Mode Select button. A new cylinder head—easily identified by its right-side exhaust port—and new exhaust system plus revised fuel and ignition timing settings for the Dual-Timing PGM-FI fuel injection help generate more top-end power and added overrev, and peak power now hits higher than before. A new KYB PSF air fork with high/ low compression and rebound damping adjustments offers wider adjustability and delivers improved suspension action. New front/rear wave-style rotors with a larger 260mm front brake disc add to overall braking performance. New graphics also give the CRF450R a distinctive look for 2015. Biker With A Badge By M. W. Simpson
HIT AND RUN DRIVERS
I think the last time I touched on the subject, a member of the Nam Knights had been killed. The time before that was in 2008 when I was injured and my bike totaled. I’m talking about the “Hit and Run” crash. Notice I said crash and not accident. The theory being that in most cases, someone did something incorrect in their driving and caused two or more motor vehicles, or people, to come together causing damage and/or injury. It was MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, that lobbied years ago to change the term of “accident”, stating that driving while drunk is not an accident, but an intentional action. Although the law still reads, leaving the scene of an accident, I think you get the idea. The State of Florida and the Bay area have seen an increase in “leaving the scene” crashes. Florida is up 500 H&R’s from 2012’s 70,000 reported H&R crashes! Statewide, the average H&R fatalities are 3.2 people killed weekly. Broward/Palm Beach/Miami Dade records a fatal H&R every week. What happens is that the average citizen may witness the crash and their first instinct is to call 9-1-1 or get out and render aid. You’re not thinking about the other car, you’re more focused on the person not moving in the most heavily damaged car. Sometimes it’s not until the police or EMS arrives that someone says, “Where’s the other car” and you look around and the dirt bag 18
has fled the scene. Did anyone get the tag number of the other vehicle? How about a description of the driver? No, of course not, and like I mentioned, usually because you’re preoccupied with trying to help. But in today’s age, almost everyone is equipped with a camera phone. If you’re not directly involved with aide efforts, it could be very important to the investigation if you were able to show a picture to the investigator that showed the tag and the type of vehicle. Law enforcement highly discourages citizens from giving pursuit of H&R (Hit and Run) vehicles. It’s too easy for you to put yourself, or other innocent people, in harm’s way. The guy you’re chasing may elect to run a red light to try to get away, but instead, plows into a van of vacation bible school kids. The first words out of the dirt bag’s mouth with be, “I was afraid of that car chasing me” and every ambulance chasing attorney in town will be competing to get a piece of you. With a description of the vehicle and even a partial tag number, police can track down the perp. Remember the old saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” There’s another reason it is not wise to chase someone. You have no idea why they are running in the first place. Police are trained in this very concept. Is the driver running because they are scared of the consequence of having a crash? Subsection; No driver’s license; they have too many points on their license; they have their dead mother-in-law in the trunk? You just don’t know. What if you do stop them and they are desperate and are armed. If it’s some dude who is on parole for murder, and knows that he is going back to the slammer for good, he may have no reason for not blowing you away. The top 7 states with the largest illegal immigrant population also have the highest H&R statistics. Unlicensed drivers are 66% more likely to be a H&R driver. The best piece of evidence is a live witness. Many times people will not step forward because of the [pathetic] apathetic idea of not getting involved. Oh, so sorry you might miss a little work, or you got other things to do. What about the family that no longer has a bread winner in their life? What about gofarmag.com
the brother biker paralyzed and will never ride again? Unless you are trained medical/fire/police, instead of rushing up to the crash, maybe you should train yourself in being that “good witness”. Assess the situation and see if you can pick out the parties involved. If you actually saw the crash happen, did you notice a vehicle leaving quickly? Try to get any info about that vehicle and if possible, write it down. What was the make, model, color of the vehicle? Any thing that makes it identifiable, like bumper stickers, flags, special wheels. Did you notice damage? What about the driver and/or occupants; race, gender or age. What direction of travel did the vehicle flee? Did you get any photos of the scene? Whether you flee the scene because you don’t want to get a ticket, [the minor end] or you’re a driving menace to society, it is no laughing matter and the courts are coming around to that way of thinking. Good law makers like Sen. Miguel de la Partilla, R-Miami, has been successful in upgrading Florida’s H&R laws. As of July 2014, an addition to Florida statue 316.027 will read; Drivers Leaving the Scene of a Crash; Creating the “Aaron Cohen Life Protection Act”; requiring the driver of a vehicle involved in a crash that results in serious bodily injury to a person to immediately stop the vehicle and remain at the scene of the crash; providing that a person commits a felony of the second degree if he or she fails to stop the vehicle and remain at the scene of the crash until specified requirements are fulfilled; requiring the court to revoke for at least 3 years the driver license of a person convicted of leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, serious bodily injury, or death. Let people know that despite being an immoral, heartless, self-absorbed, scum bag that could leave someone injured at a crash scene, they also should know the consequences of their action if and when they get caught. […and for those of you that might get away with it, I put a curse on you]. Continued On Page 42

Watch Out For Motorcycles!
By Brad Souders MOTORCYCLE CRASH? ACCIDENT CHECKLIST FOR YOUR SADDLEBAG: 1. Safety first – make sure the accident victim is in a safe place, doesn’t move and others are directing traffic as necessary; 2. Call 911 – reporting the accident to the authorities, providing the location, nature of accident, injuries involved and the request for police and paramedics. 3. Secure Witnesses – canvas the accident scene and nearby businesses to obtain and write down the names of all witnesses, and their related contact information; 4. Obtain Photographs – take pictures of the scene, vehicles and injuries; 5. Cooperate with the police – providing all information, including complaints of injury; 6. Do not speak with the other driver – especially if the other driver is not admitting fault; 7. Obtain first aid offered at the scene, offered by bystanders, paramedics or others; 8. Accept ambulance or emergency transport to the nearest qualified trauma center or hospital; 9. Report all injuries, head to toe, to the triage nurse and emergency room physician, including the smallest of injuries. 10. Follow recommendations of all medical professionals who have examined and treated your injuries; 11. Contact attorney Brad Souders, calling cell number (813) 220-7767 to schedule a free immediate initial consultation at your home or hospital room, including after hours or weekends; 12. Report the accident to all involved insurance companies – through your attorney; 13. Do Not Give Statements – to anyone except the investigating police officer mentioned above, without first consulting your attorney. Otherwise, no statements to insurance companies or private investigators, without your attorney being present. 14. Obtain proper medical treatment for all injuries in the days, weeks and
20
months after the accident. Your attorney may also be able to assist you with finding the best doctors to treat your specific injuries, under your circumstances; 15. Keep record of all lost wages – using a calendar to record all time lost from work, providing the best documentation of your lost wages possible, also recording lost sick time, lost promotions and all other related losses; 16. Keep a list of all doctors seen, including their address and telephone numbers. This includes all places you have been referred to for diagnostic testing, therapy and otherwise. This list will be helpful to your attorney to order copy of all charts and related billing, for demand or litigation purposes in your case. 17. Keep a pain and suffering journal – most keep an spiral notebook at bedside to keep a diary of the date, their injuries, describing their injuries; 18. Secure photographs or video of ongoing injuries and their affects on daily living – such photographs or video goes a long way to document continuing damages; 19. Keep an Accident File – to keep record of all papers received relating to the accident, injuries and all damages, to preserve all such information for later use by yourself and your attorney. Keep all accident or crash related information. 20. Obtain your attorney’s personal cell number – calling at reasonable intervals to ask about the progress of your case, to answer any questions you may be having and to making sure both you and your attorney have an understanding about the specific timeline your case is on, expectations of the client and of the attorney, to having the most successful claim, to maximize your recovery in these matters. 21. Best intentions or practice with the above will not help you if the other driver did not have adequate insurance coverage to compensate your damages. Motorcycle Anti-lock Brake Systems By Leslie Kay
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the main benefit of an Antilock Braking System is reduction in wheel lock-up and skid which result in loss of steering control; longer stopping distance; and loss of stability. By preventing these events and enhancing vehicle stability which allows the driver to maintain control in an emergency stop ABS increases rider safety and lessens the likelihood of crashes. Stopping your motorcycle is of great importance. Stopping your motorcycle without the screeching of tires and the need for a fresh change of clothes is particularly helpful. Coming to a stop light that changed at the last minute or avoiding the car that stops short requires brakes and skill. Many new 2 and 3 wheeled rides now have standard Antilock Brake Systems (ABS). I spoke to various riders of different ages, riding skill, and types of experience which nets a variety of answers. The most heard concern was that there might be an increase in stopping distance. This led me to question Motorcycle Safety instructor Bob Nadeau at Laconia Harley Davidson.
24
Bob’s first response was that ABS is one of the most important features on your motorcycle. Ray Vega Safety Instructor in Palm Beach County Florida says “It works”, and “Wouldn’t ride without it!” For Ray experience has been the best teacher. He has tested the braking in an emergency and the performance speaks for itself. Ray has two requirements for a new bike. It must be white, and have ABS. When braking is taught it involves the gradual application of both brakes in 3 steps; soft, medium, and then finally hard application of the brakes. In reality a panic induced brake application will skip step one and two and go straight to white knuckle. The result when the front brake is locked up may be going down or low siding the bike. Over application of the rear brakes will make the back tire of your bike “squirrelly” and could cause a high side resulting in possible ejection from the machine. The best braking practice is the simultaneous and even application of both brakes. ABS technology improves with every new model year. With each new generation technology gets better and better at anticipating the next move. We now have linked braking systems called
gofarmag.com
CBS in some models allowing the front and rear calipers to work together to create the safest possible stop. While new technology can be intimidating, and seem invasive it can save lives as well. Motorcycles with ABS are 31% less likely to be involved in fatal crashes. Couple this data with a 20% reduction in collision claims, a 28% reduction in frequency of rider injury claims and the results speak for themselves. The effect only grows more positive with combined braking systems (CBS). These technologies combine to show a reduced collision claim frequency of approximately one third. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) first reported notable reduction in crashes and fatalities with ABS in 2008, and in 2010. Additional years of data confirm this trend. IIHS states that beginning in 2016 in the European Union motorcycles with an engine displacement of more than 125cc will be required to have ABS. VA RELEASES DATA ON QUALITY, ACCESS TO VETERANS HEALTHCARE
WASHINGTON – June 9, 2014 - Today, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) released the results from its Nationwide Access Audit, along with facility level patient access data, medical center quality and efficiency data, and mental health provider survey data, for all Veterans health facilities. Full details made public at VA.gov follow Acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs Sloan Gibson’s commitment last week in Phoenix, Arizona and San Antonio, Texas to provide timely access to quality healthcare Veterans have earned and deserved. “It is our duty and our privilege to provide Veterans the care they have earned through their service and sacrifice,” said Acting Secretary Gibson. “As the President has said, as Secretary Shinseki said, and as I stated plainly last week, we must work together to fix the unacceptable, systemic problems in accessing VA healthcare. “Today, we’re providing the details to offer transparency into the scale of our challenges, and of our system itself. I’ll repeat – this data shows the extent of the systemic problems we face, problems that demand immediate actions. As of today, VA has contacted 50,000 Veterans across the country to get them off of wait lists and into clinics. Veterans deserve to have full faith in their VA, and they will keep hearing from us until all our Veterans receive the care they’ve earned.” Acting Secretary Gibson announced a series of additional actions in response to today’s audit findings and data, including: • Establishing New Patient Satisfaction Measurement Program- Acting Secretary Gibson has directed VHA to immediately begin developing a new patient satisfaction measurement program to provide real-time, robust, location-by-location information on patient satisfaction, to include satisfaction data of those Veterans attempting to access VA healthcare for the first time. This program will be developed with input from Veterans Service Organizations, outside health care 26
organizations, and other entities. This will ensure VA collects an additional set of data – directly from the Veteran’s perspective – to understand how VA is doing throughout the system. • Holding Senior Leaders AccountableWhere audited sites identify concerns within the parent facility or its affiliated clinics, VA will trigger administrative procedures to ascertain the appropriate follow-on personnel actions for specific individuals. • Ordering an Immediate VHA Central Office and VISN Office Hiring Freeze. Except for critical positions to be approved by the Secretary on a case-by-case basis. This action will begin to remove bureaucratic obstacles and establish responsive, forward leaning leadership. • Removing 14-Day Scheduling Goal VA is eliminating the 14-day scheduling goal from employee performance contracts- This action will eliminate incentives to engage in inappropriate scheduling practices or behaviors. • Increasing Transparency by Posting Data Twice-Monthly- At the direction of the Acting Secretary, VHA will post regular updates to the access data released today at the middle and end of each month at VA.gov. Twice-monthly data updates will enhance transparency and provide the most immediate information to Veterans and the public on Veterans access to quality healthcare. • Initiating an Independent, External Audit of Scheduling Practices- Acting Secretary Gibson has also directed that an independent, external audit of system-wide VHA scheduling practices be performed. • Sending Additional Frontline Team to Address Phoenix- Following his trip to Phoenix VA Medical Center last week, Acting Secretary Gibson directed a VHA frontline team to travel to Phoenix to immediately address scheduling, access, and resource requirements needed to provide Veterans the timely, quality healthcare they deserve. • Utilizing High Performing Facilities to Help Those That Need Improvement- VA will
gofarmag.com
formalize a process in which high performing facilities provide direct assistance and share best practices with facilities that require improvement on particular medical center quality and efficiency, also known as SAIL, performance measures. • Applying Immediate Access Reforms Announced in Phoenix to Most Challenged VA Facilities- Last week, Acting Secretary Gibson announced a series of measures to address healthcare access problems in Phoenix. Today, Acting Secretary Gibson announced he’ll apply the same reforms to facilities with the most access problems from the results of the audit, including: • Hiring Additional Clinical and Patient Support Staff- VA will deploy teams of dedicated human resource employees to accelerate the hiring of additional, needed staff. • Employing New Staffing MeasuresVA’s first goal is to get Veterans off wait lists and into clinics. VA is using temporary staffing measures, along with clinical and administrative support, to ensure these Veterans receive the care they have earned through their service. • Deploying Mobile Medical Units- VA will send mobile medical units to facilities to immediately provide services to patients and Veterans awaiting care. • Providing More Care by Modifying Local Contract Operations- VA will modify local contract operations to be able to offer more community-based care to Veterans waiting to be seen by a doctor. • Removing Senior Leadership- Where appropriate, VA will initiate the process of removing senior leaders. Acting Secretary Gibson is committed to using all authority at VA’s disposal to enforce accountability among senior leaders. • Suspending Performance Awards- VA has suspended all VHA senior executive performance awards for FY2014. • Future Travel Over the course of the next several weeks- Acting Secretary Gibson will travel to a series of VA facilities across the country. He will hear directly from Veterans and employees about obstacles to providing timely, quality care and how VA can immediately address them. Road Trippin’ By Hyway
Come on, will ya, we’re wastin’ day light! Let’s get this show on the road. The excitement of planning and preparing for a long dreamed of road trip can sure nuff get your motor revved up. But this is exactly the time ya need to slow down and taper back before you fire off like a wild ricochet shot and miss the target all together and all you’re left with is the bad memory of the unexpected recoil. The excitement of heading off into the unknown ain’t changed since before the days of the Donner party when they tried to shortcut the game plan of a long distance road trip! The hazards and pit falls ain’t changed much. People still get sick, equipment still breaks down, the weather is still in charge of it’s domain, wrong decisions and wrong turns are still made and the reality that you may become a victim of someone else’s carelessness or stupidity hasn’t changed.
Itchin’ To Go
with only one engine”. He proceeded to explain to me in great detail, as a general rule a small puddle jumper with two engines can’t fly on one motor. Having two engines doubles your chances of engine trouble! Using that as a guide, the more whistles and bells your bike has and the more equipment you lug around the higher your chances of not having a good and trouble free road trip are. Pre-trip bike maintenance is your best hedge in preventing mechanical malfunctions. At a minimum be sure your tires are in great shape not just “OK” or good. Fresh oil and filter, take a serious look at your brakes, rotors and calipers. Water/rain and long mountain down grades will play havoc on your brakes. The steepest down grades I’ve ever come across is 9% that was beyond scary! When you see those sand pit truck run offs it too late to wonder if your brakes are good. If you have a water pumper make sure the radiator coolant is fresh, no leaks and be sure the radiator fan kicks on. Get a good motor and trans tune up including any trans filter your bike might have. Don’t forget to clean or replace the air filter(s) and check all the rubber vacuum lines and caps for cracks and leaks. Be sure the battery is good and cables tight. I usually do all this about a week before I leave so I have a chance to “test” ride my bike before I leave.
non-existent so good tires are an absolute requirement. Cage drivers, pretty much not affected by the rain so don’t change their driving and only a few have enough sense to turn on their lights. Cold and heat are always an issue, either will drastically affect your ability to control your “motor movements”, reflex time and quick thinking time required to handle and control your bike. Couple “EMERGENCY” tips that can HELP if you’re caught short by the weather. Cold: If you wear a vest, put it on backwards so that the back of the vest is covering your chest, GREAT wind breaker. You won’t believe the difference! In a pinch, pick up a pair of dishwashing gloves or plastic food handling gloves from a fast food joint. It amazing how much warmer and dry your hands will stay. A plastic bag over your socks will keep your feet dry. Those umbrella condoms you see at the entrance of stores work for helping to keep your arms warm especially worn under a long sleeve, grab a couple for your legs too, to wear under your jeans. Yeah it sounds nuts but in a pinch it works. It’s a whole lot better then freezing or worst yet your lady freezing when you only need it temporarily. Hot: Not a lot you can do about heat. Take everything out of pockets and soak yourself with water including the inside of your helmet. If you don’t have a helmet, soak a Doo Rag or any material that will soak up water and wrap your head. If you happen to have a heavy shirt or sweat shirt put it on and soak it, it’ll hold the water longer. Style and lookin’ good don’t count when you need to cool down.
Mother Nature can have some serious mood swings. Back in 1911 in Oklahoma City the temperature dropped 66 degrees in less then 24 hours, from a record high of 83 to 17 degrees! Cold, rain and heat is just a fact of life. I don’t care what rain gear you have you’re gonna get wet! Talking to an airplane pilot who flies folks But wet usually ain’t the problem it’s into the back country to go fishing and the safety issue. You vision is severely delivers supplies to outpost lodges, I impaired. Stopping and controlling your Hey folks if you like the high quality of jokingly said, “I refuse to ride in a plane scoot on wet surfaces can become almost this magazine, let our sponsors know, drop your cash at their shops. You can’t plan or predict what you might encounter on the road but there are a couple things that are pretty much a given. Weather problems and equipment malfunctions.

HHowdy folks, let’s get this party started!! Too hot to be out partying you say? Huh! Well I’ll tell you what, there is a party coming up in LaBelle in Barron Park at the river. Lots and lots of shade trees to keep ya out of the sun and lots of seating available in the shade too so I do hope you put this event on your schedule. I’m confident the event is going to be HUGE Caroline, ya hear me HUGE… LOL… I get so tired of that commercial but yet here I am using his very words, guess they kinda stick with ya after hearing them yelled at us constantly from the television. This Bears & BBQ cook off will have lots of activities including a poker run coming from Ft Myers and another from Port Charlotte. Once this charity event came to light, my good friend Donta Morris stepped right up and offered to get a couple poker runs organized to raise money in support of A.C.T. Thank You Donta and a thank you to the rest of the ladies that are helping to make the run a success. Also I’d like to congratulate you all on starting another chapter of the Women In The Wind “The Thunder Maidens”. May you have many many safe miles with smiles. Darn after rereading this I realized I forgot to mention the bike show I’m doing at this event. Ok here it is, 32
$5.00 to register and we’ll have the winner and four runner ups. The bike show will be on Park Avenue so come sign up. Now, did you find a little addition in your magazine this month? A 16 page fold open business locator for Southwest Florida which includes reading material, a ride map and sponsoring advertisers. Most of these places on the map I have been to and I highly recommend them. Personally I didn’t go around and just try to get bike shops, I tried to target different types of businesses that we use daily. Last month we had the Tampa area covered with the inserted map. Our target is to update, print and insert into magazines every few months. I hope you enjoy our little addition. You’ll also be seeing the maps around by themselves for the next few months. Ok now a place for you to eat, I always try to cover the food department. After all who doesn’t have to hit an eatery while out riding? Over here on the east side of LaBelle there is the Port LaBelle Inn. Yeah, yeah, yeah I know there have been problems in the past but now they are under totally new management. And
gofarmag.com
the lady that called me out there rides a motorcycle, which is a plus by itself. The restaurant is open on Sunday for brunch and it is open the other days of the week at 4 for dinner. I haven’t been out there to eat yet but I will be there very soon. Donna the manager promises me that I’m going to like the food, we’ll see. I must say I am glad to see there is another place here in LaBelle open for breakfast, so many riders like to go out on Sunday morning for a breakfast ride. Ok last but not least, “ Bikers WelcomeNO COLORS, NO CLUB AFFILAITAION, LEAVE IT AT YOUR BIKE” Think about this statement, is this establishment’s food really worth you being told you cannot wear your vest in? You know the chances are they don’t have a clue what the sign means so they are just going to throw everyone with a vest into the colors class. Some Vets got very disrespected at one of these place recently… even more of a reason that if I ever go to a business with a sign like this, vest or no vest I’m not eating there, I will leave and consider them not biker friendly. Ok I’m done for this month… though I do have to tell those that are following my progress, I’m doing way better and I actually sat on a BIG RED Trike over at Haus of Trikes in Ft Myers the other day. First time I’ve been in the saddle since the accident… Paul Skinner one of the owners walked in and I yelled across the showroom floor to him “CAN YOU SEE ME NOW”? That was fun, I am getting closer to the big day, this was a sign!! Well, lots of hugs and for goodness sakes keep it between the ditches… Kruisin With Kati

Off Road Riding By Lowell Anderson
getting ready for the next collapse of the financial system. Personally I don’t worry about things like that too much. There isn’t a whole lot you can do about that stuff, and I imagine when the next big disaster hits, I will find myself in the mix like everyone else trying to figure out what to do next. My daily life, on the other hand, is something that I am always prepped for. Like I said, I tend to do things in a very structured manner and that includes getting ready to ride.
Ready To Ride? Have you ever had a girlfriend that is always late? Really annoying isn’t it? I have never been considered a patient person….ever! I tend to live my life in a structured way and I find myself often wondering why many people in the world get caught with their pants down every now and then. Nowadays with all the things going on in the world, “prepping” has become a catch phrase you hear all over the place. Everyone is prepping for the next big disaster or
36
Time is something we don’t get a lot of and as the world moves at a faster pace I find myself feeling like I am always behind. This isn’t due to lack of effort, its due to my personality. I am always striving to get to the next thing. I don’t know why, but this is just the way I think. I have a sense of regret that builds if I waste time and that always keeps me moving. My family is constantly telling me to relax, but that’s just not something I do well. That being said, it’s bad enough when I feel like I am wasting time, it’s twice as bad when someone else is wasting my time. Nothing bothers me more than when I finally get some time to go riding and the people I am riding with, are not prepared. Doesn’t matter if I am going street riding or off road. Having that buddy that is always late and gets to the ride with all sorts of problems really drives me nuts! You know the guy. The

one who shows up late, no air in the tires, bike won’t start because the air cleaner hasn’t been changed in months. The guy that spends half the day doing all the stuff he should have done days ago when you decided you were going. The guy that stops over your house with a flat tire and says he needs a hand getting it changed when you were supposed to be on the way to the track. Yeah…That guy! Listen…If you go riding with your friends, don’t be that guy! Off road riding is dangerous, so over the years I have made it a habit to always make sure I have a buddy along just in case things don’t go my way. Having a reliable buddy to go riding with is essential. Having a guy that just sucks up your day because they spent their time doing what they wanted to do instead of getting ready to go is useless. If you want to have people to ride with, make sure you check everything over the day before the ride. Start the bike, change the oil, clean your air filter and check your tire pressure. Make sure you pack your gear and have it in the bag ready to go. Pack your lunch and throw it in the fridge, and for god’s sake set your damn alarm so you get to ride on time! If you do these things you will always have friends to ride with simply because they know they can rely on you. You will be known as the guy that’s always Ready to Ride!

Motorcycle Review Specifications CRF250R:
CRF250R
In 2014, the Honda CRF250R earned another AMA 250 Supercross championship. Equally important, the CRF250R stood out as the ride of choice for Pro Supercross racers. An impressive 48 percent of all competitors in the 250 class rode Honda’s CRF250R in 2014. With a great powerband and nimble handling, the CRF250R strikes a unique balance that makes it fun to ride for both professional racers and weekend warriors alike. For 2015, the CRF250R offers a host of improvements, with a new-generation 49mm Showa Separate Function Fork, Triple Air Chamber (SFF-Air) air fork leading the way. This fork eliminates steel springs for less weight (2.8 pounds
lighter) while offering a wider range of adjustments than a conventional spring fork. A redesigned muffler and new fuel map settings for the Dual-Timing PGM-FI fuel injection system increase engine performance for smoother acceleration, improved throttle response, quicker revving and more peak power. Like the CRF450R, the CRF250R also incorporates Honda’s new Engine Mode Select button that allows the rider to easily select one of three different EFI/ignition maps to match track/riding conditions. The CRF250R also features new front/rear wavestyle rotors, a larger 260mm front disc brake and new graphics for a fresh look. Color: Red; Price: $7599; Availability: August 2014

Do you Ride Smart? Modern motorcycles demand a high level of skill from their riders. “Technological change for the motorcycle rider may demand heightened bodily agility and dexterity, to handle the physical forces and consequences of faster accelerating (and stopping) machines and to manage the risks of collisions with car-driver assemblages increasingly cocooned and anaesthetized from the presence of other road users. (Pinch & Reimer, in press)
Modern motorcycles also require a high level of responsibility from their riders.
