Publishers Corner: Let Me Tell Ya! By Mike Savidge

God Doesn’t Need A Bullhorn I’m a firm believer in freedom of speech. The right to speak your mind and express your beliefs is very important, especially in a business such as this. And apparently the Founding Fathers of this country thought it was important enough to make sure it was the basis for the very first amendment to the United States Constitution. We, the people, were given the right of assembly, freedom of the press, freedom to choose our religion, and the freedom to speak our

4

minds. The one caveat being, that when we are exercising these rights, we must act within the confines of the established laws. These laws can sometimes place certain restrictions on the subject material or on the manner in which it’s presented. But if you stay on the legal side of the law, you can go to just about any public place or event and express your views and opinions on just about any subject to those gathered and there’s not much anyone can legally do to stop you. Of course, there’s nothing requiring those in attendance to pay one bit of attention to what you have to say either. And those in attendance also have the right to communicate their opinion back at you if they should desire to do so. And that’s how it all went down at the most recent Fort Myers Bike Night. This was the last bike night before the summer season and thousands of bikers and locals filled the streets, restaurants, and shops in the historic district. Adding to the festivities, a BBQ contest was taking place along the riverfront at the same time. It had all the makings of a perfect night until people started coming to our booth and complaining to Kati about someone down the street using a bullhorn to preach religion. They said he was disturbing people and making it impossible for vendors to conduct business. Pam Lemmerman, the coordinator of the bike night activities, was also at our booth and explained that the group was not a registered vendor and that they had shown up at other public events to voice their views in the same manner. It wasn’t long before Moses, Jr. and his band of faithful,

gofarmag.com

if clueless, followers made their way down the street and took up position on the corner across from us where they spent the rest of the night taking turns delivering their ‘message’ to the crowd through an amplified bullhorn. I’m not a religious scholar so I can’t debate the gospel passages they were tossing around. But I’ve always been taught that any message is best received when delivered with a spoonful of honey rather than a bucket of vinegar. So coming into a street party full of bikers and telling them that they’re all going to hell because of the way they live and what their drinking is probably not the best method for winning new converts to your cause. And, as most of you can probably guess, it didn’t take long for many of those in attendance to decide it was time to exercise their right to deliver an opposing point of view. And that’s what Moses the Moron wanted. There are a lot of good people spreading the word of God but this group’s style and tactics showed that they’re nothing more than a bunch of misguided souls whose only goals seem to be to disrupting public events and trying to get someone to physically challenge them so they can file a lawsuit. That’s why they bring along someone to videotape their interaction with the crowd. They know their rights and act within them hoping someone else will step over the line when confronted by them. One big lawsuit win would be worth a lot more to this group then actually showing people the path to living a good life. They took a lot Continued On Page 29

target only motorcyclists. The AMA began tracking federally funded motorcycle-only checkpoints when they first appeared in New York state in 2007. Since then, more than $500,000 in federal funds has been spent on these traffic stops. The AMA believes there are better ways to spend Americans’ tax dollars, said Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government affairs. “This money could have paid the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course fee for 10,000 potential motorcyclists,” Allard said. “That money could have been used to combat distracted driving or been invested -- as federal matching dollars -- in the current comprehensive study to analyze the root causes of motorcycle crashes.” The AMA is calling on motorcyclists nationwide to support legislation -such as the Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act (S. 2078 and H.R. 1861) now under consideration in Congress -- and to sign the AMA petition. The petition provides an opportunity for motorcyclists and others to tell Washington what they think about discriminatory, costly and ineffective motorcycle-only checkpoints. To view the petition to end discrimination against motorcyclists, visit: https://cqrcengage.com/amacycle/app/ sign-petition?0&engagementId=47742. Background In 2007, New York State Police stopped motorcyclists traveling to and from the annual Americade motorcycle rally, a popular destination for motorcyclists in the upstate region. In 2011, Georgia conducted roadside motorcycle-only checkpoints as bikers rode through the state on their way to Daytona Beach, Fla., for Bike Week in March. Another motorcycle-only checkpoint was conducted in northern Virginia during one of the nation’s most visible motorcycle rallies -- Rolling Thunder -- over the 2011 Memorial Day weekend. Motorcycle-only checkpoints were also conducted in 2010 in Utah following a U.S. round of the FIM Superbike World Championship. Heading to Arizona – The Trek Begins

By Bernie Stevens

There’s nothing like the pending birth of a first grandbaby to coax you to leave a perfectly warm Florida in the middle of winter. When my presence was requested at baby showers in Fort Worth in March, we provisioned our RV, hooked up the trailer and bike, and hit the road. After freezing a few weeks in Texas, we decided to take a trip to Arizona to thaw out and get some mountain, canyon and desert riding in. Our trip began in Bridgeport, Texas. We took Route 101 North to Route 287 North. These are easy-to-ride cruising roads or the kind used for going from point A to point B – mostly flat and straight with a few curves and sloping hills thrown in. The scenery is pleasing, but there wasn’t much we hadn’t seen before in other rural areas and small towns. A few words of caution regarding

8

Chillicothe, a small town we went through while on Route 287. First, it’s a notorious speed trap. The town uses fake police cars with mannequins in them. You never know which cop is real. Second, there is a cement plant outside Chillicothe. When the winds are high, as they always are in the spring in Texas, they will coat you, your bike, your RV, your car, or whatever else you have, with limestone dust. We stopped to wash both the RV and our bike as soon as we could. It took two additional washings to finally get everything off both of them. We also took about thirty minutes to visit Valley Pecans, this neat little store on Route 287 in Chillicothe. They have everything from fresh pecans to ones prepared every way you can think of, as well as some you never heard of. Their homemade fudge is creamy and not too sweet. They also have plenty of nifty Texas gifts and signs. It was worth the stop. “…and they called the wind, Mariah!” As we were driving through west Texas and New Mexico on I-40, we were calling the wind a lot of things, but “Mariah” was not one of them. This was especially true when it ripped the shroud off one of our air conditioning units just before we stopped for the night. Fortunately there were no vehicles around us as Rich watched it sail to the ground and explode into a hundred pieces. gofarmag.com

It was a good thing we stopped when we did as it was later reported on the news that I-40 west of us had been closed due to the high winds. Having lived in Fort Worth for nearly 10 years, we are familiar with the spring winds that come from the west. They are nearly constant with gusts up to 50 mph. Such conditions can wreck havoc on motorcycles and caged vehicles alike. Because we had plenty of time to get to our destination in Arizona, we decided to spend an extra night in Gallup, New Mexico. Between the wind and the falling temperature, we refrained from taking the bike off the trailer to explore the area. When we woke up the next day, I looked outside and exclaimed, “Are you freakin’ kidding me?” It had snowed during the night! It was April 3rd! Fortunately there was no snow on the roads, but Rich had to climb onto the roof of the RV and brush snow from the tops of the slides before we could close them. The temperature stayed in the low 30’s the rest of the morning and the snow remained on the ground until we were miles into Arizona. Despite the weather, the scenery along I-40 in New Mexico and Arizona was lovely. It was the perfect environment to listen to Marty Robbins and discuss the hundreds of cowboy movies and television shows we’ve seen.

Since we’ve been talking about riding the entire Route 66, we’ve detoured off of I-40 three times to preview what was behind the “historic” Route 66 signs we kept seeing. To us it was disappointing, bordering on depressing. With the exception of Albuquerque, the sections of the “Mother Road” we saw were nothing more than dilapidated buildings, closed restaurants, and lots overgrown by weeds. You have to use your imagination to see it as it once was. While there are parts of this road that are making money for towns it runs through, the sections we saw were not worth all of the hype. Clines Corners was worthy mainly because their throw-back restaurant serves delicious green chili cheeseburgers. There is a souvenir shop in the same building as the

restaurant and a gas station. That’s it for Clines Corners. As we approached Flagstaff, the scenery became more mountainous and tall pine trees replaced stubby cedar trees. It wasn’t long before we turned south on I-17, which we followed to Route 260 West to Cottonwood. These scenic roads were a pleasure to travel on. We became more anxious to unload our motorcycle and ride. We drove a mile on Thousand Trails Road to the entrance of Verde Valley Campground. Our campsite was another mile from there, nestled in a beautiful valley surrounded by canyon walls. It was quiet...very quiet. At night it was dark… very dark. As we set up the RV and unloaded the bike we chatted with other bikers and campers about roads to ride and places to visit. Ones who were familiar with this area informed us early April in Cottonwood means comfortable days and cool to cold nights. They made suggestions regarding the best way to head back to Flagstaff to pick up the new shroud for our air conditioner. We were about to see places we had only heard of gofarmag.com

m W. H o W. Grover Cleveland Blvd

– Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon, Jerome, and more scenic roads than we could ride in just a few weeks. We fell asleep that night with the furnace running full blast and our dreams full of the excitement of new roads to ride and places to see.

Road Chapters By Clay Douglass

Chapter One: To Wash or Not to Wash? That is the question! If I leave the dirt unmolested there is a high probability that not a drop of rain will fall for the first 5000 miles of our trip to Alaska. If I detail the bike, we will need SCUBA gear before we reach the mainland. I should be paying attention to the loading of “Crazy Horse” and our Bushtec trailer, but both are in need of a bath. After all, we have ridden in the rain enough to have faith in our foul weather gear. I clean both. With the “Horse” clean and shiny, I turn back to loading. Our bike “Crazy Horse” isn’t your typical touring or sport touring mount. Touring isn’t our bike’s only job, it has do it all. The Horse is my daily ride in Key West. The new Dyna may be the best all-around handling of big twins I have ridden. When HD changed the Dyna frame in 2006, they did a good job. Some would say a Dyna unit isn’t a good bike for transcontinental touring. Along that line, so far we haven’t seen another Harley Davidson FXDF Fat Bob pulling a trailer either. The 2008 Fat Bob had the frame I wanted and the 96”/6 speed powertrain was an added bonus. Stripped down it is an around town cruiser and dressed out with saddlebags, tour pack and towing the Bushtec trailer, North America is our cruising grounds.

10

We found the Horse on Ebay in 2012 with a price 2K under wholesale. At that time it had 4K miles on the clock. Not much for a bike four years old. It seems the former owner had lost interest or was in need of cash. There were no accessories other than the skull medallions sold by HD and a backrest. Nothing negative about the skulls but I like clean lines with few, if any, medallions of any type. The sale of the skulls items did offset some of the cost for the locking bags and quick release windshield. Along with the purchase of a small fabric tour pack, we turned our around town cruiser into a reasonable weekend rider. That is except for the stock seat designed by a sadist. Mustang’s vintage wide put a smile on my cheeks and a big smile on Janie’s face too. Over the next month we doubled the odometer reading to 8K. While the bags and tour pack helped they lacked the volume to handle cross country camping trips. We looked at the various trailer vendors while at Daytona Bike Week. For us the Bushtec units were particularly interesting. The price tag for a new one was a bit much for our now retired fixed income. Fortunately, a quick check of Craigslist revealed a clean 1994 unit about 90 miles west. We arranged to see the trailer the next day. It was in exceptional condition. The paint was an unusual blue with a green tint and the large rear light bar clashed with the bikes black paint and clean lines. Paint can be changed and light bars gofarmag.com

can be removed so we closed the deal. Now we have the space necessary for all our camping gear and personal items. Staying at the Holiday Inn from time to time works well to regroup, do laundry and provision but we can’t afford it and don’t care for it every night. Why travel across the country only to stare at the walls of a motel room each night? Now it appears that we are set and ready to go. Right? Wrong! We had the bike, the trailer but no connection between the two. A search indicated that no one had a trailer hitch connection on their shelf that we could buy. It seems that no one had decided to pull a trailer behind a Fat Bob. The designs sold by Hitch Doc in SW Minnesota had strong eye appeal so we contacted them. Due to the wide rear tire of the FXDF their current Dyna unit would not work. Their staff did an outstanding job fabricating and delivering a new model made especially for the “Crazy Horse”. I can’t praise their team or product enough. Fit and finish were top notch and 22,500 miles later the chrome looks as good as new. Our return ride back home to Key West from Alaska took us through all the western states west of the Great Plains and he southeast. Our planned route to Kodiak Island this spring leads from Key West to Grand Isle, LA, the north rim of the Grand Canyon, Lake Tahoe, Crater Lake, and Vancouver Island. More next month…………….

DOWN AND OUT IN PATAGONIA, KAMCHATKA, AND TUMBUKTU

By Dr. Gregory W. Frazier

Hardcover, 224 pages. 8.25” x 10.25” Illustrations: 300 color & 50 B/W photos ISBN-13: 978-0760345832 MSRP: $35.00 ABOUT THE BOOK The first-ever, first-hand chronicle of Dr. Gregory W. Frazier’s never-ending motorcycle ride. A little over 40 years ago, a man named Gregory W. Frazier got on his motorcycle, went for a ride, and never returned. He’s still out there, circumnavigating the globe: exploring the jungles of Asia in the winter, trout fishing in Alaska in the summer, and covering all points in between during the rest of the year. He’s been shot at by rebels, jailed by unfriendly authorities, bitten by snakes, run over by Pamplona bulls, and smitten by a product of Adam’s rib. He’s circled the globe five times and has covered well over one million miles (and counting). During those past four decades, Dr. Frazier has been chronicling and photographing his around-theworld adventures, publishing 13 books on the subject (including one previous title with Motorbooks), the majority of which have been manuals for touring specific locations or general how-totour-by-motorcycle books. He has also produced 9 documentary DVDs, but until now, nothing in print has encompassed the entirety of his worldwide motorcycle adventures. Now, for the first time, he has written his on-the-road autobiography that captures the whole of his extraordinary travels in words and images. Down and Out in Patagonia, Kamchatka, and Timbuktu tells the amazing ongoing story of Dr. Frazier, one of the world’s single most well-traveled motorcyclists.

BOOKS FOR BIKERS ABOUT THE AUTHOR Professional motorcycle adventurer Dr. Gregory W. Frazier is the only motorcyclist in the world to have four times circumnavigated the globe solo by motorcycle. He has been described as “America’s #1 extreme motorcycle adventurer.” No stranger to danger, his adventures around the earth include having been shot at by rebels, jailed by unfriendly authorities, bitten by snakes, run over by Pamplona bulls and smitten by a product of Adam’s rib. In 2005 Frazier completed his fifth motorcycle ride around the earth, helping a Parkinson’s patient as his pillion “Ride the Dream.” Frazier’s two-wheel travels have taken him over more than 1,000,000 miles and he has literally ridden a motorcycle to the ends of the earth: Deadhorse, Alaska;

Ushuaia, Argentina; North Cape, Norway; Cape Agulhaus, South Africa; and Bluff, New Zealand. He continues today to actively pursue motorcycling adventures at distant places on the planet as well in North America. Frazier works as an author, motorcycle journalist, film producer, and professional photographer. His stories appear throughout the international motorcycling press. Known for his travel and adventure articles, he also enjoys a solid reputation for motorcycle and product evaluations. www.horizonsunlimited.com/gregfrazier

Biker With A Badge By M. W. Simpson

LEESBURG BIKE FEST

Well another Leesburg Bike Fest is in the books. The crowds were large, the heat was high and the bikes were plenty. The music was ok, but I must admit I’m not a big Vanilla Ice fan and although Jackyl rocked the crowds, it wasn’t memorable. I didn’t shoot concert photos this year, because the Leesburg alliance has gone the way of many bike fests and are getting more and more commercial losing that hometown flare. Most of you wouldn’t notice it, but one new twist was that they wanted media photographers to have a liability insurance policy in order to have press credentials. In my case, where I will only use a couple of shots for the magazine and I gave the bike fest free images of the event, it was not worth me spending $175 for a weekend insurance rider. I spoke to several vendors and the cost of a vendor’s space is outrageous. By the time they pay for their travel and living expenses and the space rent, I can’t believe they make any money. Don’t get me wrong, they do make some money, but when I asked someone why they didn’t do the Leesburg show this year, the answer is always, “it isn’t profitable”. With that said, I didn’t find any great deals. Mostly you could save some shipping 18

cost. I did find a couple of trinkets that were cheaper than the event T-Shirts. Yes, I did buy one, but only because I wanted a new tank top that wasn’t black. I will admit, Leesburg is still my favorite show [for now]. There is plenty to see and do. Food and drink are plentiful as was the port-a-potty’s and tipping attendants was worth it. Security was good at the fest, but you had to be watchful on the roads for the stepped up traffic enforcement. My hotel was about a 10 minute ride to the fest and I bet I saw someone pulled over every time I made the trip back and forth to the show. I was riding with 2 of my buddies on Highway 27 one evening and we had another bike in the lane next to us. The guy was an old biker on a road weary Gold Wing pulling a small flatbed trailer. The trailer had a small hover-around type motorized chair strapped to it. At a traffic light we were taking in the sight of the bike and musing at the call of the road for this duffer. The light changed and our lane moved a little faster than the other lane, but it was only a few seconds and we heard a loud skidding sound and down went the Old Gold Wing. For whatever reason, he didn’t pay attention to a pickup truck slowing to make a right turn and rear ended the truck. His emergency braking caused the trailer to jack knife and down he went. Paul, Ken and I, being the old retired road warriors we are, made a U-turn and went back to help. The Biker was ok and up and about when the real law arrived, so we slipped away. The point being YOU need to pay attention to traffic! There were plenty of events to take in like poker runs, although a word to run organizers. Check your routes. A simple direction mistake like “turn left” when you actually needed to turn right, can be problematic. We took in our share of bike contests & demo’s (the Pro-rider show is always cool…the Frisbee catching dogs even cooler) and there is always the local music. There is a lot of talent at the show and you can find any brand of music you gofarmag.com

want. Food is never a problem in the event or outside of it. You can get the usual fair of carny-food or hit the locals. I always hit Vinnie’s out east of Gator Harley for some good wings and “fireballs” (hot Italian sausage). Whenever I travel, I like to patronize the locals. I was surprised that the “Tilted Kilt” restaurant chain took over the old Leesburg Opera House. It was a refuge from the heat and they had a $7 meal menu. Gator Harley was an event in itself, even though getting in and out can be a challenge. We took in the ABATE party and of course there is always the Ms. Leesburg Bike Fest contest. As usual, a big name sponsor’s entry won… jus’ say’n. You have to plan ahead for rooms. I’m fortunate to have a standing reservation with the Comfort Inn in Lady Lakes. They are extremely friendly and accommodating. And over all, on a scale of 5 wheels, I would still give Leesburg 4 wheels. For those of you making the Sturgis trip…Plan ahead; check your bikes and ride defensively. HEY…take a GOFAR with you and get a photo with you, your friends, the mag and a notable place at Sturgis, and we just might publish it. B-safe.

Watch Out For Motorcycles!

2014

By Brad Souders Persistence, Accountability & Justice:

A biker was in a Wal-Mart parking lot, when a driver coming towards him, suddenly turned left, causing a serious injury, requiring emergency surgery and at least $70,000 in medical bills. The Zephyrhills Police Department investigated the crash, listed a witness and issued a citation to the cage driver. A short time later, the biker contacted my office to help him with his injury claim. He also mentioned the cage driver, driving a Corvette, was more concerned about the damage to his car than the biker. In the days following, the Corvette driver gave notice of contesting the citation, entering a Not Guilty Plea. Likewise, his insurance carrier, Progressive, advised further investigation was needed, as he repeatedly denied fault for the accident. Thus, this collision turned into one driver’s word against the other; and, further investigation was needed. We contacted the witness listed on the crash report learning he had

absolutely no recollection of the accident whatsoever. The witness had some medical issues and was under medication at the time and couldn’t be of any help. So we have a parking lot accident, each driver blaming the other, now with no independent witness. We looked at the property damage photographs of the bike, they didn’t help much and we did not have any accident scene photographs noting marks in the road surface. It seemed the only evidence in this case was the testimony of each driver, a battle of witness credibility. Next, we contacted Wal-Mart to ask if their outside security cameras contained any video footage of the parking lot accident. The first person we spoke with said the cameras were only positioned to record the “entrance” area at the front of the store. Nonetheless, we asked for copy for the date and time of all video footage they had on file, only to receive a CD or DVD disc, unreadable by at least four computers; and, a “Second Request” in writing didn’t receive a response. Eventually, a “Third Request” produced the video footage; and, IT SHOWED THE

ENTIRE CRASH - like a “bird’s eye” view. Yes, the crash played right before our eyes. It was one of those experiences where you play it once, twice and three times, each time there was a “Wow” factor. There was absolutely no doubt the Corvette driver caused the accident. The biker simply had no chance to avoid the crash, it appeared as if the Corvette suddenly turned, almost like he was aiming for the biker. In court, the cage driver maintained his “Not Guilty” plea. Afterwards, the cage driver quickly realized we had true video footage of the crash itself; and, he suddenly changed his plea to “No Contest”. Afterwards, the biker told the judge he wanted “accountability”, a good judge presided and ... Justice Was Served! Go For A Ride Magazine By Leslie Kay

Shaking Off The Rust The kids are out of the house, retirement is looming, your second childhood needs to begin. During your pursuit of organizing your old photos you started scanning everything into your computer. Revisiting each age and phase of your life along the way. There it is. Your first love before a family and responsibility took over. The two wheeled freedom of your youth. Whether it was a Harley, Honda, Yamaha, or BMW does not matter. You were young, wild, and daring back then. Truthfully, raising kids is probably more dangerous than motorcycles. Your motorcycle will not induce a stroke after 15 years of love and nurturing. This trip down memory lane can induce a fever that can only be cured by getting back in the wind. What steps should you take? Sure you still know the mechanics of riding but what has changed over the years? How do you get back in the saddle? You can run out buy a bike, hop on and go becoming an instant Born Again Biker. You will quickly realize that it is not the same as it was years ago. Traffic is different, gear is different, and, most importantly, the machine is different too.

24

Today’s motorcycles have more technology, and more power. A motorcycle may seem similar to the one you had years ago but it’s likely faster and equipped with Anti-Lock Brakes, a GPS, and entertainment systems. Some helmets are compatible with your phone via blue tooth technology. Not only will you need to contend with your rusty riding style, you will also need to learn all about the technology that runs your new ride. Your disposable income is greater than it was 20 plus years ago. You may be able to afford more motorcycle than you need when starting out. Be sure to make a decision based not only on what you find visually appealing but what also fits your riding style and skill set. Completing a Motorcycle Safety course before getting your new bike is a good first step, if you already have the bike check into an Experienced Rider course. This course will dust the rust off and prepare you for operating your motorcycle in the real world. Experienced Rider courses are typically taught on your machine. Some resources recommend that you take a course and ride for about a year and then take an additional course.

gofarmag.com

Once you have your purchased the cycle of your dreams and have completed your skills shakedown be sure to practice. Practice makes perfect! Does your new bike have ABS? Find a large empty parking lot and practice braking. You will need to know how your ride responds before you are in a real world situation. Slamming on the brakes can and will at some point be necessary. Prepare through practice. Be ready for how your machine is going to react. A required sudden stop is not the time to be surprised. Statistically the first couple of months of ownership of a new bike is when the most motorcycle accidents occur. Practice is not just for shining up rusty skills. Practice is also necessary with a new bike. New features mean learning new habits. When we sit for as little as several weeks and do not ride whether it is for health reasons, or because we live where it snows, we get rusty. Going into that parking lot and practicing circles, braking, and basic skills for a few minutes can make the difference in how you maneuver once you are out on the road. There are lots of things to consider when you are dreaming of the wind and the freedom of two wheels. Get the technical stuff out of the way. Best to be mapping the next adventure and how many diners you can visit on the roads less traveled.

Veterans Info

FDVA RELEASES VETERANS’ HOME SITE SELECTION SUBMITTAL LIST LARGO, FL – May 15, 2014 – The Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs announces that six Florida counties have submitted site selection submittal packages for a seventh state veterans’ nursing home. The counties are Marion, Putnam, Polk, Collier, Manatee and St. Lucie The announcement was made today during a meeting of the department’s Site Selection and Planning Committee in Largo. The committee will announce in the near future a schedule to visit the nominated sites. Florida currently has state veterans’ nursing homes in Daytona Beach, Land O’ Lakes, Panama City, Pembroke Pines, Port Charlotte and St. Augustine. The department also operates a veterans’ assisted living facility in Lake City. The Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, serving the nation’s third largest veterans’ population, celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2014.

THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Thirty-one words which affirm the values and freedom that the American flag represents are recited while facing the flag as a pledge of Americans’ loyalty to their country. The Pledge of Allegiance was written for the 400th anniversary, in 1892, of the discovery of America. A national committee of educators and civic leaders planned a public-school celebration of Columbus Day to center around the flag. Included with the script for ceremonies that would culminate in raising of the flag was the pledge. So it was in October 1892 Columbus Day 26

was adopted in 1945. The last change in language came on Flag Day 1954, when Congress passed a law which added the words “under God” after “one nation.” Originally, the pledge was said with the hand in the so-called “Bellamy Salute,” with the hand resting first outward from the chest, then the arm extending out from the body. Once Hitler came to power in Europe, some Americans were concerned that this position of the arm and hand resembled the salute rendered by the Nazi military. In 1942, Congress established the current practice of rendering the pledge with the right hand placed flat over the heart. Section 7 of the Federal Flag Code states that when not in military uniform, men should remove any headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, thereby resting the hand over the heart. People in military uniform should remain silent, face the flag and render the military salute. The Flag Code specifies that any future changes to the pledge would have to be with the consent of the president. The Pledge of Allegiance now reads: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

programs that school children across the country first recited the Pledge of Allegiance this way: I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. Controversy continues over whether the author was the chairman of the committee, Francis Bellamy — who worked on a magazine for young people that published the pledge — or James Upham, who worked for the publishing firm that produced the magazine. The pledge was published anonymously in the magazine and was not copyrighted. According to some accounts of Bellamy as author, he decided to write a pledge of allegiance, rather than a salute, because it was a stronger expression of loyalty — something particularly significant even 27 years after the Civil War ended. “One Nation indivisible” referred to the outcome of the Civil War, and “Liberty and Justice for all” expressed the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. We connect Florida veterans and their families to the federal and state benefits and services they have earned. The words “my flag” were replaced by “the flag of the United States” in 1923, because some foreign-born people might have in mind the flag of the country of their birth, instead of the U.S. flag. A year Florida’s Veteran Population at a Glance: later, “of America” was • There are 1.6 million veterans in the state of Florida. added after “United • Florida has the largest population of World War II veterans in the nation. Road Trippin’ By Hyway

Ride baby ride baby, ride baby ride, we ain’t got no home, we ain’t got no need. We chase the wind like tumbleweed! There’s something about folks who ride that really sets ‘em apart from the mainstream. If a car pulls in to get gas across from another car it’s all business, get your gas and go, don’t even glance at the other driver standing two feet away. Noooo, don’t dare say Hi, that’s just not done. Just hurry up and high-tail it out of there A.S.A.P. before their cooties can jump on ya! Or when shopping or just running errands folks piloting cages just ignore each other. BUT when two motorcycles happen to be getting gas it’s another story that goes something like this, “Hey nice scoot, great day for ridin’, where ya headed?” I was gonna grab a cup of coffee, join me?” Next thing you know you’re jaw jacking over a cup of stale coffee like old lost friends! Or if two bikers see each other in a store, “Hi, whatta ya ride?” The next thing you know you’re standing there in the middle of Walmart talking about all the bikes you’ve owned or the new one you’re dreamin’ ‘bout gettin’! Ya just never know who you’re gonna run into. A while back at a small gathering for troubled kids I met a couple, Pops and Boo, there was no mistaking ‘em for anything other than bikers. It didn’t take long before the three of us were swapping old road stories of days gone by and a little a’bout our, “Where y’all from? ” history. Born in Kentucky Pops was raised on a bike. When Pop’s family moved to Indiana his dad became one of the original Rough Riders so ridin’ motorcycles runs deep in his heritage. It was in Indiana where Boo and Pops first met up. Boo, happened to live just a couple doors down. Now as luck would 28

Chase the Wind

have it there was a plum tree in Pops’s yard and Boo loves plums, so not being the bashful type Boo walked right up to Pops’s house to ask if she could pick some plums. When she knocked on the door Pops opened it and he has been blinded by love ever since. Boo had been riding since she was seven and liked the motorcycle image so it was an instant attraction. Like the two wheels on their scoot, they been going around together ever since. Now we all know folks who ride and we may even know folks who ride a lot but Pops and Boo take riding to the extreme level. Come to find out they ain’t got no house, they been running the roads for the past few years chasing the wind living the free nomadic life, livin’ in campgrounds throughout the country or anywhere else they can throw up their tent for a few nights. Heading south in the winter and north in the summer. They’ve been to all the lower 48 states and most many times. They’ve been to most all the national, federal and tons of state parks. They’ve seen all the national and federal attractions not to mention all the state stuff along the way and any other place or thing that grabbed their attention and they do it on less then $800.00 a month! Now, as if travelin’ and living on 800 bucks a month isn’t enough and beyond my intellectual capacity, to top it off they carry themselves and all their gear on ONE bike and NO trailer! Now that’s freedom at its purest right there. The

more they talked, the more I listened, the more I listened, the more I liked what I was hearin’. I questioned myself, “could this work be for me”? Pops’s favorite place to hang out is Tannahill Campgorund and Ironworks in McCalla, Alabama. That’s where the Confederates secretly built the H.L. Hunley submarine, the first and only ever sub used by either side in the civil War and probably the world. The Hunley was used in an attempt to break the Union blockade. The Confederates were successful in torpedoing and sinking the Union, USS Housatonic, as well as it’s self with one shot! Boo’s favorite hangout is, Land Between The Lakes, near the Shiloh Battleground. Ride baby ride baby, ride baby ride, we ain’t got no home, we ain’t got no need. We chase the wind like tumbleweed”! Yea I think maybe that might just work for me. If you like more info or have any questions or thoughts you would like to pass along to Pops or Boo, drop me a line and I’ll see to it they get ‘em and I’ll get back to ya. Hey folks if you like the high quality of this magazine, let our sponsors know, drop your cash at their shop. Catch ya at the next gas stop. Have a question or comment? Continued From Page 4 of ribbing from the crowd and with a few thousand bikes nearby it wasn’t long before people took turns pulling up in front of them and exercising their right to crank the throttle. Of course, that sent some of the followers scurrying over to the police to complain about the noise.

To their credit, the police on duty did an excellent job of overseeing the situation and making sure things didn’t get out of control. Lt Jay Rodriquez of the Fort Myers PD explained to me that the group has been a continuing problem and while they’ve been able to prevent them from entering events where admission is charged, there’s little they can do about them at a free public event like bike night except to monitor the activities. He knows they’re hoping for a cop to put a hand on them so they can file a lawsuit but says the city is also looking into the possibility of charging them for the additional police services that are required to protect them when they disrupt an event. The biggest problem with this whole situation is the effect it had on the vendors. Vendors are the backbone of any bike event. The fees they pay to attend help subsidize the cost of the event. They also spend money locally at hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and other businesses. They take a big risk and have to hope the weather is good and that the crowd is in a buying mood. Ever seen an event with no vendors? Probably not more than once. Even if you’re not buying, the vendors and merchandise add to the personality of the party. So while the preacher was lashing out at the crowd through the bullhorn, the bikers were cranking out some eardrum bursting blasts and most of those in attendance were standing around watching and waiting for something to happen. That left many of the vendors to sit and twiddle their thumbs. Well, not all of the vendors. Some of them were putting together a petition to send to the mayor and city council stating that they will not return unless something is done to prevent this from happening again. Lose the vendors and you can probably kiss this event goodbye. Not good for the vendors, nor the downtown businesses, nor the city, nor those who enjoy the party. How does it all turn out? God only knows. Sorry, couldn’t resist. Well, the next bike night event won’t be for several months but there’s a downtown July 4th party and those putting on the event expect Moses the Mouthy and his group to show up. Will the city be able to come up with one solution that protects the rights of those who want to preach and those who are trying to make a living? I’ll keep you posted.

Kruisin With Kati

Howdy folks, welcome to Summer! If you are looking for some summer fun, be sure to head over to Mugs & Jugs in Lehigh Acres on the 4th Sunday of the month. I’ve got a partner helping me keep you entertained for the summer. Come meet Marci, she’s a real hoot and loves to have fun! Just a little summer time tip for ya, a helmet keeps the sun from frying the top of your head and a lightweight long sleeve shirt will help keep you hydrated. And remember to drink lots of water! I’m not going to go on about my recovery but I am going to say, I’m doing much better. I’ve been attending some of the local events and have enjoyed seeing all my friends again. Flatheads Roadhouse in Bokeelia hosted the International Women’s Ride Day which had an awesome turn out. This is amazing considering the event was moved from Saturday to Sunday without a lot of notice due to the weather. Thank you to Donta and the Chrome Divas for putting the event together for all us ladies! Thank you Bikers Post for coming and taking so many photos! The photos can be seen on their website, Bikerspost.com and also on the Go FAR Facebook page. I took some photos also that can be seen on my facebook page. Another event I attended was the last Fort Myers Bike Night of the season. It was so wonderful being there at the Go For A Ride magazine booth and finally seeing tons of my friends and 32

being able to exchange hugs. While my jaw was wired closed and I had a neck brace on, I just felt it was safer for me not to have visitors. I sure missed my riding buddies! Now about bike night, I have been helping with this one for about 4 years and I’ve never seen the pain in the butt folks like the ones we had at this one. They called themselves a religion that I’d never heard of and the way they were using a loudspeaker to yell at and insult everyone. I’d rather not ever see them again. We, as event coordinators, tried everything in our power to have them removed from the area but the police said there was nothing we could do. Next season if they show up we’ll just have to have an organized loud pipe contest. Thank you to all the vendors that have supported this event all season, see ya next season! Ok, I’m getting a little back on track with finding cool places for you riders to get a meal. Right here in LaBelle on the west side of town on 80 there is a neat little restaurant called 2 Peas. Very cute little place that opened August of 2013. Lots of you are familiar with the old Flora & Ella’s restaurant that was here in town, they had the best pies around, remember? Well, now the lady that made those pies is one of the owners of this new place so guess what that means? Yummy pies

daily except for Sunday, everyone needs a day to rest. A little secret that lots of folks don’t know is the other lady owner is a rider, she’s been around bikes about all her life. I love supporting folks from the riding community, they are generally the folks that support the magazines and rider’s causes. Please stop in and say hi.. oh they close at 2 pm Monday-Saturday. I’ll let you guess which lady there is the rider. I am so sure some folks are saying LaBelle? Where the heck is LaBelle? Well let me tell ya, if you get to the crossroads of Hwy 80 and 29 you are here. I’d say we are about half way between Clewiston and Ft Myers. We are a small town that is finally beginning to grow and I’ve been here over 35 plus years. I came in on a bus and the driver of that bus said, most folks that come here never leave, I guess he was right. The town grew on me as I sat back and watched the changes it’s gone through. While I’m thinking about it, did you read the editorial page? Well guess that’s about it for this edition, ride safe and ride smart my friends… I’ll be back out there with ya eventually. Sure do miss the wind in my face and that roar following me down the road.

OFF ROAD RIDING Written By Lowell Anderson

Anyone who knows me knows I am not a fan of the EPA. I just can’t seem to come to the conclusion that any self-governed government agency is a good thing. The EPA makes rules based on government funded research and that is the basis for their decisions. The funny part of the deal is that these same decisions almost always seen to create more funding for the EPA. E10 fuel and now E15 fuel is just another one of these scandals that seems to go flying under the radar and we the citizens pay for these decisions with our tax dollars. If E15 goes through you are likely to be paying a mechanic! Bob Dinneen, CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, says E15 is safe for virtually all post-2001 vehicles, based on extensive government-sponsored testing. “We think the (EPA) warning label should be sufficient to notify consumers,” Dinneen said. “There are no corrosive issues with E15. If there’s an issue with E15 (damaging vehicles) we’re going to know about it, and the EPA is going to know about it.” This statement alone is a complete joke to me. If Bob Dinneen knew anything about simple mechanics, he could tell you that an engine cannot burn water. Ethanol actually attracts water from the atmosphere and leaves it separated in your fuel tank. This means your engine is trying to burn it, which can lead to a slew 36

of problems. E10 is bad enough for a car, terrible for a motorcycle with a small gas tank, and horrible for any gas engine. Now the EPA is trying to mandate E15? Why would they do this? To save our environment so future generations can enjoy the fruits of our labor? NO…The real answer is simple…. Money… The EPA first mandates the use of the fuel and then sells it to the refineries. 2013 they sold 16.55 billion gallons of the stuff. This year they blended an estimated 15.21 billion gallons into the fuel supply. The decrease is due to the reduced demand for fuel. Then the EPA mandates that all the fuel stations have to put in new tanks or blender pumps to dispense the fuel. All of this equals billions and billions of dollars in revenue. Another claim by the Obama administration, which has been a strong proponent of E15, is that all of this has been a financially good thing for the American farmer. So good in fact those farmers have developed unproductive land. “Five million acres of land set aside for conservation — more than Yellowstone, Everglades and Yosemite National Parks combined — have vanished on Obama’s watch. Landowners filled in wetlands. They plowed into pristine prairies, releasing carbon dioxide that had been locked in the soil. Sprayers pumped out billions of pounds of fertilizer, some of which seeped into drinking water, contaminated rivers and worsened the huge dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico where marine life can’t survive,” the Associated Press reported. “The consequences are so severe that environmentalists and many scientists have now rejected corn-based ethanol as bad environmental policy. But the Obama administration stands by it, highlighting its benefits to the farming industry rather than any negative impact.” They also fail to mention that it takes more energy to produce this “clean fuel” than it can actually create. The whole idea was to save the environment… right?!? What a joke! When it comes to your motorcycle gofarmag.com

street bike, cruiser, or dirt bike, E15 is a poison your bike simply cannot swallow. There are many different reasons for this but long story short, Ethanol is bad for your engine, and it’s bad for the environment. It will damage your engine, and is also terrible for internal seals. The AMA has been fighting this for over a year now and if you are a motorcyclist you need to get involved. Please write your congress representative and let them know how you feel about this “alternative” fuel.

Fort Myers Bike Night

Rolling With Rikki

The snowbirds have pretty well left so now we have our roads back. Now the big question will always be, where should we ride today? If you’ve been saving our back issues, you have plenty of ride maps to check out. We finished our Bike Night season with a huge turnout in Ft. Myers. Only a sprinkle of rain but nothing we couldn’t deal with. I believe everyone had a good time, the bands were awesome as usual and there were a variety of vendors and a lot of great food. Saw a lot of familiar faces. Thanks everyone for coming down. It has been beautiful riding weather and I finally turned over my big 25,000 miles and have been adding a lot to that. If the weather could just stay as it is I would be a very happy biker. Now is a great time to check out some of our advertisers in other areas. I plan on taking each weekend to discover new roads I have not yet been on. Always up for a good adventure ride. Even with summer coming on, there are still a lot of events and runs all over the state. I want to try to make as many as I can including some on the other coast. I love to stop by any new places where I see bikes parked outside and make some new acquaintances. You never know where I might show up so put on your best face because your picture could show end up in the magazine. Let’s all make sure you have your sunscreen on and a few maps from Go For A Ride in your saddle bags so you are road ready for anything! Have fun, be safe out there and maybe we’ll see you somewhere along the way!

Melody’s Banana Chocolate Chip Dessert Grilled Veggies By: Sandi Ingredients: 3/4 cup butter Vegetables need to be basted with an 2/3 cup white sugar oil. I use olive oil and not extra virgin 2/3 cup brown sugar unless I am looking for that particular 1 egg, beaten flavor. Baste before you put veggies on 1 teaspoon vanilla extract the grill, during cooking and before and 1 cup mashed bananas after each turn. Adding seasonings to the 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour basting sauce is an excellent way to add 2 teaspoons baking powder flavor. Cut off the top of a large onion and 1/2 teaspoon salt put a generous pat of butter on it. If the 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips bottom isn’t flat enough for the onion to sit upright, make a bed of crumpled Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees aluminum foil. Zucchini, summer squash, F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour sweet peppers, bok choy, tomatoes, egg a 10x15 inch jelly roll pan. In a large plant, fennel, celery, broccoli (steam first) bowl, cream butter, white sugar and are all excellent. Slice the hard stuff into brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg strips or rounds and baste with olive and vanilla. Fold in mashed banana. In a oil. Try any of these for a flavorful treat: separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder Garlic, Onion, and/or Thyme Don’t over and salt. Fold flour mixture into butter cook.
