The Ride Maps Are Coming!
We’ve been doing Scenic Ride Maps for Florida since our very first issue in 2007 so we think we know a bit about where the good riding roads are. The maps have been so popular that riders have saved them and put them in binders for future reference. Without a doubt the map is one of the favorite features of each issue and we’ve had many requests to reprint them or publish a book which people could purchase. Well, we made some upgrades to our website and have started putting the maps online using Google maps. You can check out the ones that are available so far on www.gofarmag.com under the Ride Maps link at the top right of the page. You’ll get a list of maps and once selected you can take advantage of the features from Google maps to plan and enjoy your ride. Eventually the maps will be incorporated into our new DESTINATION RIDES feature on the website. We’ll show you where to go and where to ride when you get there. Check out the first batch of maps that are up and running and check back regularly for new maps to be added.

The hardcover book was published by teNeues Publishing of Kempen, Germany and the text is in both English and German. The book has 224 pages of color and b/w photos. The book measures a bit over 9” x 12” and retails for $65. In the press release teNeues is described as “one of the leading international publishers of coffee table books in the world”. Coffee table books are usually oversized with a primary focus on photography, and not a lot of narration.
Product Review Revision Eyewear Hellfly Ballistic Sunglasses By Mike Savidge
Eyewear selection is very personal and for me that means I want riding glasses that are comfortable and give me a distortionfree view. The Hellfly® Ballistic Sunglasses from Revision satisfy both of those criteria. They only weigh an ounce but the wrap-around frames stay snugly in place going down the road while keeping out wind and dust. The lenses are made of an optical grade polycarbonate giving me a clear view with 100% UV-A-B-C protection. The lenses are tough, military ballistic impact requirement tough.
Motorcycle Passion does a good job of insuring there’s enough narration to help you understand why that photo, or person, or event was included. Since the book lists an ‘editor’ and not author, and the photos were gathered from several sources which are listed in the credits, I’ll assume a committee of writers, editors, photographers, and a few riders were enlisted to put together this overview of motorcycles. It’s loaded with images of motorcycles, racers, builders, rallies, scenic roadways and more. The accompanying text gives the reader background info on the rider or ride. And like a good roadside stew, the varied ingredients of Motorcycle Passion make for a delicious day of slow page turning.
The sunglasses come in several frame/lens color combinations but my favorite is the Photochromic lens which is a clear lens that automatically darkens when exposed to sunlight. Get out of the sun and the lens lightens. No need to stop riding at sundown, or sunup, to change glasses. And yes, they work very well. I’ve had some other glasses that were supposed to do this but they never seemed to get dark enough for daytime or clear enough for riding at night. Not a problem at all with the Revision sunglasses. The glasses come with a 3-year warranty, a micro cleaning cloth, a storage case and cost about $79 for the regular lenses and $109 for the photochromic lenses. Prescription lenses are available. I have decided to start a series where I highlight some of the public service people who are part of the biker community. I’m starting off with two police officers that share something in common. That is the passion for riding motorcycles and serving their community. Meet Tampa Police Motor Officers Roy Paz and Demetrius German. Roy has been with the department for 20 years and Demetrius a mere 8 years. Both are

If you have attended any of the several parades in Tampa, you might have got a look at the police bikes doing figure eights and other formations. It not only takes a lot of skill, bike control and timing, Roy said, but it looks cool! Escorts are a lot of fun and one of the most dangerous of their task. A motor cop may have to leap-frog from one intersection to another at a high speed. It only takes a second for some knucklehead to pull out without looking and a tragedy may occur. “WATCH OUT FOR MOTORCYCLES!” A reminder of the Florida move over law. If you see a service vehicle at work, or police/fire/ems on the side of the highway, you MUST move to the next lane over or reduce speed by half. It’s the law! Bsafe.

Leesburg has been rolling out the red carpet for bikers for the past 19 years. What started as a small party for a few thousand has evolved into an annual amusement park of motorcycles, music, and more. This year’s party drew in more than two hundred thousand people who enjoyed one of the best free parties you’ll find. The historic downtown business district was filled with hundreds of vendors offering food, drink, merchandise and services. While the Gator H-D stage in Towne Square hosted the main acts, Lita Ford, Puddle of Mud, and the Marshall Tucker Band over the 3-day event, there were dozens of other musical acts playing on several other stages giving attendees a wide choice of musical tastes. If you weren’t there for the music there’s plenty of other activities and entertainment, and just about everything is absolutely FREE! That included riding demonstrations by the drill teams and Ride Like A Pro, bike stunt shows, a tattoo expo, a couple of bike shows, including the Rat’s Hole, biker games, hundreds of vendors, hot babes (and guys) contests, and all those musical acts. According to Joe Shipes, who heads up the Leesburg Partnership which is responsible for creating and managing Bikefest, this year was very successful with warm riding weather and a well behaved crowd. He was very pleased with this year’s partnership with Progressive Insurance which set up a party on the top of the parking garage and plans to return next year with a bigger party. Joe is already looking ahead to next year’s 20th Anniversary Bikefest which he says will be the “biggest and baddest”. You’ll find additional photos from the event on the Go For A Ride Facebook page.

GO SEE IT LIVE! Well the supercross series is wrapped up for 2015 and Ryan Dungey takes home the championship for KTM this year. I have to say I was not happy about all the injuries this year. It really had an effect on the competition at the top. Ken Roczen and Trey Canard were both top contenders that really never got the chance to race. Justin Barcia was also injured in the middle of the season and just wasn’t up to speed when he returned. Overall it was a good season, but injuries plagued the riders making the running order pretty thin. Now outdoor season begins and all of the teams are switching gears getting ready to race outdoors. No more small tracks and tight venues. The rest of the season is raced outdoors on huge, wide open tracks that demand speed and unbelievable fitness. Switching venues like this in the middle of the year really changes things up for the riders and the teams. The riders have to adjust to the different tracks, terrain, and speeds. The teams have to adjust the bike settings and make sure they are displaying and representing properly, and make sure the riders are comfortable and ready to go. All of this takes a ton of work, and it is also something that makes this sport stand out among the other racing sports out there. Just image taking all the NASCAR 18
drivers and telling them they had to run half of their season in rally cars racing through the woods in Europe…(sounds interesting…I might actually tune in for that!) Rain or shine these guys are out on the track racing. It doesn’t matter if it’s pouring rain…they still have to go out and perform! If you have never been to an outdoor national, you should take the time to do so. Supercross is great, but the riders are limited to the obstacles. There are certain jumps, or rhythm sections that can only be done at certain speeds, which makes the rider adjust accordingly. Outdoor tracks have obstacles as well, but fewer jumps that limit the riders speed. In essence, the riders can un-cork the power and ride to their true potential in an outdoor setting, and let me tell you… they do! You never can get a true feeling for how fast these guys are going until you get to
see it live and in person. The speeds are absolutely ridiculous, and the riders have to keep that speed going for 30minutes plus 2 laps. To top it off, they do that twice in one day after practice and qualifying sessions…all the same day! Yes! This is not sport for the weak. These guys don’t get paid nearly as much as a professional baseball player, and I guarantee you they whine a lot less! I guess that is why I have never been a big fan of ball sports. Some of the ridiculous paycheck “professional” ball sport athletes make compared to racers is just dumb. One major league pitcher’s paycheck could pay the salaries for all the top 10 motocross riders. It just makes me ill to think about it. Wasn’t it Ole Ben Franklin who was always looking to prevent a problem runnin’ around yellin’ “A stitch in time saves nine” and “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Ole Ben couldn’t have been more dead on when it comes to preventing motorcycle problems before heading out on a serious road trip. Before headin’ out on a road trip I go over my bike with a fine tooth comb. BUT… still the gremlins sometimes find a way to have their fun at my expense!

Gathering my composure as I got up off the ground, it was all I could do to not send this guy to the promise land by way of 9mm! I must say we definitely ROCKED our day! Lining up at the Publix parking lot on Burnt Store in Cape Coral we rumbled on to beautiful Pine Island. An awesome sight as all theses ladies rode together to the Ragged Ass Saloon in St. James City for our 2nd Annual International Female Ride day! This year we added “Bragging Rights” with the state who had the most in attendance winning. Michigan’s “Women In The Wind” took the prize. Now the guys were real good sports as we ladies got to judge them in the Best Buns contest! Once again our tattoo contests were fun and we had the guys judge. Dance, indeed we did! It was a great afternoon of fun and Sisterhood. Thank you Ragged Ass for having us and to all the kind road blockers who got us there safely.

Time to start a new chapter in my life and things are falling into place for the most part. First of all, I want to give a HUGE thank you to my attorney’s office Goldberg, Racila, D’Alessandro & Noone for taking such great care of me and my future. Laura Mancuso (Senior Claims Analyst), I want to thank you also, you put so much time on my case and you were always there for any questions that I had and Lord knows I’m full of questions. Thank you all! With this being said I gotta tell ya it’s gonna be interesting to say the least for me to be back in the saddle. This Freewheeler sure is a lot different from my ole sporty… I could start the sporty in any gear without an issue. I took this big guy, hmmm think that’s what I’m gonna name him... Big Guy… out for a spin the other day and again today. On my first ride I didn’t go very far because I was getting freaked out by the cars coming toward me and doing the left turn in front of me. Granted they did stop and wait until I passed but all I could think was are they going to see me? Do I have enough lights on the front of this thing? I can’t tell you how bad I was freaking, it was awful, I’d never before been freaked out when it comes to riding. I’m sure, at least I hope, in time feeling this will pass. Anyway I got to the river, my destination, to get a few photos of the bike. Then the real aggravation started, I couldn’t get the bike into neutral to get it started to go back home. I tried and tried, I even got off the bike and tried to push it an inch to just move the gears. Nothing was helping and in my condition pushing was NOT what I wanted to be doing. I gave up and walked across the park to a gentleman sitting in his vehicle. He looked like he might know bikes and lucky for me he did. He said 24
he’d been watching me and was waiting to see if I was going to come ask for help. I’ve always been the type that feels if I have to ask for help then I don’t need to be riding but since this is a new bike that thought doesn’t count. Needless to say the gentleman pushed the bike a little bit and found neutral real easy. I hopped on and went home and parked the Big Guy. Today I went out with getting some photos in mind. Low and behold I stopped at my first destination and here we go again. Being one step smarter this time I did not shut the bike off. I sat there for a few minutes trying to get the bike into neutral before shutting it off. Not happening, so I rode to my next destination. I stopped and tried again to get the bike out of gear before shutting it off. I was worried that if I shut the bike off then tried to get it out of gear I’d be stranded again but this time with no one around to help. I gave up after this and just rode home. You are not going to believe this, shut the bike off, and tried neutral and it went right in… OMG, maybe it’s a sign that I am not supposed to be riding again. I’ll try again but next time Tom is going to have to be with me. Hey, at least I’m getting back out there and trying to ride right? I’ll keep ya posted, just keep reading my articles. Ok now for the activities around the area. We had one heck of a last Downtown Fort Myers Bike Night of the season. Everything was going great until the pain in the butt, off the wall, religious group showed up with their megaphones again. How they can stand there and yell at everyone that we w w w.gofarmag.com
are all going to hell for riding and for showing up at a bike night is beyond me. I keep hearing that it’s freedom of speech but there has to be a line drawn between speaking and yelling with a megaphone. Don’t get me wrong, I am for religion but I do not like it forced on me. These speakers they use carry the sound for almost a whole block, there is no getting away from it during bike night. Let me ask you, just what kind of religion has to show up with video camera for their protection? Trouble makers, that’s who, they just dare folks to touch them so that they can sue. Another event I attended for a short time was the International Women’s Day Ride… Donta and the Thunder Maidens Chapter of WITW did a great job on the event for the second year in a row. There were certainly a lot of ladies there on bikes and everyone having a fun time from what I saw. Maybe next year I’ll be able to join you on my bike… fingers crossed. See you at the Mugs & Jugs 4th Sunday monthly event, it runs all summer long some come join us.

Product Review: Ventz
By Mike Savidge Summertime riding in Florida can be described in one word, HOT! The heat can be brutal, especially if you’re wearing a riding jacket, so we’re always looking for ways to cool off. Ventz is a British made product that attaches to the sleeves of your jacket and helps to direct air up the arms and into the jacket. They come packaged in pairs, one for each sleeve, and are made of plastic and rubber. There are five colors to choose from. The Ventz slip inside the sleeve opening and there’s a clip to hold them in place. According to the literature, the air locked inside your jacket creates an invisible blanket of air that can raise your body temperature to uncomfortable levels. The Ventz are supposed to create a regular flow of soothing air that strips away this heated layer. They claim it typically provides a 25% reduction in riding temperature.
I tossed on a jacket, plugged the Ventz into my sleeves, and went for a ride when the temperature was about 90-degrees. To me, the air flow was negligible and I really didn’t notice much of a cooling effect beyond the tops of my forearms. The openings are only about 2 square inches and have a plastic screen cover to keep out bugs and bees. The hoped for cool down never occurred and for me the Ventz dontz.
