Publishers Corner: Let Me Tell Ya!

Coolest Website On The Planet Checked out www.GoFARMag.com lately? The original website was set up back in 2007. It served its purpose, but it was time for a rebuild from the ground up. It was 2007 when the first smartphones were put on the market and that was a big game changer. Soon there were touchscreens, iPods, iPads, tablets, and even eye glasses with embedded computer processors and virtual screens.

The website upgrades let you view it on all of these devices. Well, we haven’t

actually tested out the glasses, but if you’ve got some, load up our website and let us know how it looks.

We know a lot of readers save the back issues but for those who haven’t, the website has available a large selection of articles from our Travel Tales section, columns from Biker With a Badge and Kruisin With Kati and others, motorcycle and product features, and, of course, safety information. (We want to keep you riding so you can keep reading.) There’s also an online Event Calendar that is updated weekly with the latest biker events throughout Florida. If you’ve got an event coming up that you want listed, send the info to mailbox@gofarmag.com.

One of the coolest features on the website is the new interactive Street Map and Business Locator. Earlier this year we published the first in our new series of maps. So far, we’ve covered the Tampa Bay and Fort Myers/Southwest Florida regions with other metro areas on tap for the future. The printed maps are on high quality glossy stock and can be found at the local biker shops, restaurants, hotels, and other locations. The printed versions also have a bonus scenic ride map along with the rules of the road for Florida motorcycle riders and some helpful safe riding tips. The online maps take things to a higher level and allow you to get driving directions to the business locations along with providing links to their websites. It’s a Go For A Ride Magazine exclusive.

First Ride Stories Wanted I’ve got a favorite shirt that has an image of a small 60’s Mustang (the bike not the car) on the front with the words “You Never Forget Your First Ride” above it. Do you remember yours? I do. It was aboard a new Honda that I’d bought with money that was intended for college tuition. Riding or buying books, easy choice. Anyway, a friend of mine had to ride the bike home for me because I didn’t have a license and hadn’t actually ridden a bike on the street before that.

The bike was delivered to a little redneck bar across the street from the trailer park where I lived. (There are a lot of stories to be told about both of those places, but another time perhaps.) The parking lot was gravel and there were just two cars parked in front at the time. My friend handed over the keys and I stuffed my head into a helmet and climbed aboard.

I started it up, put it in gear, gave it a fistful of throttle, and released the clutch lever. Well, if you’ve seen those videos of people who have absolutely no idea how to ride a motorcycle - that was me. The good news was that I didn’t hit anyone or seriously damage the bike. However, there was a large bruise on my left thigh and a bent back rear turn signal from my close brush with the rear end of one of those two stupid cars.

That was my first ride. What was yours?

Willie G. Davidson to be honored as an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend at 2014 induction ceremony

PICKERINGTON, Ohio – August 8, 2014 -- AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Willie G. Davidson, the grandson of HarleyDavidson founder William A. Davidson, will be honored as an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Oct. 17, in Orlando, Fla. “Willie G.,” as he is known to his admirers, is responsible for many innovative motorcycle designs that ushered in a new era for the iconic company.

The induction ceremony is part of the AMA National Convention being held in conjunction with the American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) Oct. 16-19. “Few motorcycle designers have contributed more to the modern motorcycle landscape than Willie G. Davidson,” said Ken Ford, a member of the Hall of Fame executive committee and treasurer of the AMA board of directors.

AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legends are existing members of the Hall of Fame whose lifetime accomplishments are showcased as part of the annual induction ceremony of new Hall of Famers.

“I feel the same humility today receiving Legend status as I did 15 years ago when I was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame,” said Davidson, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999. “It’s an honor to know that the creativity and emotion that’s part of every Harley-Davidson motorcycle has helped fulfill dreams of personal freedom for millions of motorcyclists around the world.

“By securing this place in history as part of an iconic American brand like Harley-Davidson, I’m living out my dream and those of my family members who founded the company 111 years ago,” Davidson said.

Davidson, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in graphic arts and then attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., joined the design department at Harley-Davidson in 1963.

From the outset, Davidson’s designs broke convention. Among his earliest projects was the FX Super Glide. The Super Glide was one of Harley-Davidson’s factory customs, a production motorcycle with styling cues that reflected the custom motorcycles being built in shops across the country at the time.

Today, the Super Glide is considered to be a milestone in the history of HarleyDavidson. The original FX led to many variations that would produce some of the company’s best-selling machines.

In addition to his work at the design table, Davidson was a savvy businessman. He was one of the 13 company executives who raised the funds to buy Harley-Davidson back from conglomerate AMF in the 1980s. As such, he was crucial in laying the foundation for Harley-Davidson to become one of the most successful, profitable and fastestgrowing corporations in the United States over the next three decades.

The Hall of Fame Legend recognition takes place in concert with the official inductions of the current year’s AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame class. The Class of 2014 includes tuner and innovator Byron Hines; motocross pioneer Pierre Karsmakers; Tom White, acclaimed

motorcycle collector, former nationally ranked racer and founder of White Brothers Cycle Specialties; George Barber, founder of the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum and the Barber Motorsports Park; national off-road racing champion Scott Summers; AMA motocross champion Mike LaRocco; and legendary tuner and team owner Rob Muzzy.

MRF News Release: Highway Funding Bill Clears Congress

Washington, DC – August 1, 2014 - The United States Congress has agreed on a temporary patch for the highway trust fund, reports the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. The Senate agreed to the House version of the temporary funding fix for the highway trust fund.

The fix came just hours before the United States Department of Transportation would have had to cut off payments for highway construction projects and mass transit programs. The quick fix will keep the trust fund solvent through mid May of 2015.

The final Senate vote ended a week of legislative ping ponging between the House and Senate. The Senate wanted to modify the legislation so it would expire in December of 2014, thus forcing a vote on a larger highway bill that would address the trust fund issues before the end of this year. The House defeated that legislation, sending its own version to be passed by the Senate, that will run through May and spends $10.8 billion.

The temporary patch kicks the larger issues into the next Congress to be sworn in next year.

Road Chapters: Chapter Four

(This is another report from the road by Clay Douglass as he and his wife make their motorcycle journey from the Florida Keys to Alaska this summer.)

The road west from Possum Kingdom State Park in Texas to Roswell, NM is straight. Most of it is flat. The sky was clear. We were making good time as Texas has high speed limits on its highways.

Our fuel mileage was down from the normal of 40mpg to 32mpg. The wind was blowing steady at 20mph with gusts to 30mph directly on Crazy Horse’s nose.

As the sun rose higher, the temperature followed suit. By the time we had reach Post, Texas it was 106°F. We elected to cool off in the shade where it was only 101°F. As that did little for us we retired to the local watering hole for two beers and the luxury of air conditioning.

Slow roasting in a tent wasn’t an appealing idea to either of us so we checked into the Garza Hotel for the night. The hotel looks like an old western movie set. It was built back in the 1800’s.

It was comfortable even though it was haunted. The original owners had a daughter nicknamed “Postie” born in the hotel and the first girl to be born in the town of Post. She died while still a child.

Legend has it that, on dark and stormy nights, she has been seen playing in the various guest rooms. There were no storms or ghost during the night so we slept well and were ready to roll west the next morning.

At this point, Janie made a serious error. There is an old saying about being careful what you wish for, you might get it. Well, she wished it would be cooler in the days to come. If I had a bar of soap 10

handy it would have been placed in her mouth. Tempting the fates of the weather is normally a bad idea. This case was no exception. Lunch time outside of Roswell, NM was a perfect 70°. By the time we had the 7th best rated cheeseburger in San Antonio, NM at Buckhorn’s Burgers, the temperature had dropped to 60°. The heat from the green chili cheeseburger was to come in handy soon. By the time we reached the Very Large Array of radio telescopes west of Sonora the wind was crisp and the temperature was down in the 50’s. Just prior to reaching the VLA, the sky opened up. Dark clouds released their load. Fortunately for us the rain evaporated before hitting the ground or us. Neither of us had experienced this strange event called a Virga. Apparently, it is a common occurrence in the arid west.

Datil Wells was one of the watering holes along an old cattle trail. The area appealed to us so we stayed two nights.

I took a hike up to the top of one of the peaks nearby from which I could see the plains of San Augustin off to the east. Even though I was 20 miles away the satellite dishes of the Very Large Array were visible. If you saw the movie “Contact” with Jodie Foster, you may recall seeing these giant radio telescopes.

They are several stories tall and about 90’ across the dish. In all there are 27 of these telescopes. Nine are on each of the 3 legs that extend out from the control center. By moving them along a special railroad on each leg, the space between the individual dishes can be changed.

Last year on our return from Alaska we could not stop at the Gila Cliff Dwelling National Monument due to the government shutdown. We headed south for about 200 miles the next morning to take it in. It is a small park and had just a few visitors the day we passed through.

The ride down was great. Mountains, white water streams, good curvy roads, herds of horses and cattle kept things interesting. We camped about 20 miles south of the park. The next day we took off to see the dwellings. On our return to camp as we topped the last hill I noticed a puff of smoke windward of our camp.

Less than 20 minutes later the smoke was thousands of feet high. The fire was big and growing fast. The plume stretched for miles in our direction. Shortly one of the two roads leading to this remote area was closed. It was time to leave. We packed up camp just before dark. Our ride to the safety of Silver City required we pass through smoke for several miles.

Firefighters and their vehicles rolled past us on their way to the firestorm.

We rode about 70 miles before we were out of the path of destruction. As we exited the motel the next morning in Silver City we could see the fire coming over the mountains to the north. On the road again we headed west into the wind again.

While we had clear skies the temperature climbed only to the low 50’s as we made our way west on NM72 to the north on US395. For about 10 miles near the town of Clifton, the highway passes through a gigantic open pit mine. After that, tight turns with 15mph speed limits (and they mean it) lead to a very pleasant ride through the mountains. Once on the mountain top patches of snow were visible near the roadside. There were no gas stations or stores available for about 80 miles. Both of us had all of our cold weather gear on by the end of the day. It was cold but the beautiful alpine setting made the miles flow by. My past crossing in Arizona have been mostly desert or scrub. It was a pleasant change but the cold slowly took its toll. By the time we reached Eagar, AZ we were done. A night in a motel, clothes washed and the body refreshed, we headed north to Canyon De Chelly National Park. The park is in the middle of the Navajo Indian Reservation.

Biker With A Badge

Ok, I admit it. I had wicked bad writers block this month and the boss is on me like a cheap suit. I have been writing for GOFAR for over six years now and I think I covered about everything pertaining to the law and bikers…and then some.

It might be time to revisit some topics for our new readers or you, the loyal GOFAR readers, need to drop us a line and request something. So, I was talking with Mrs. Biker with a Badge and she tried to jog my brain with some topics.

“How about DUI?”…done that. “What about those lights you have on your bike?” …did that last month. “Speeding?” …nope. Then she goes, “What about skin protection?” Right, a story about a bunch of bikers wearing sun screen. I decided to pull the iron pony out of the barn and make a run over to Biff Burger for a… well, Biff Burger. While crossing the pond a commercial came on the radio about… sun screen. That got a chuckle out of me.

Then I see a billboard for Coppertone sun tan lotions. Then I see an ad on a taxi cab for skin care. OK, I don’t need a house to fall on me to know this isn’t Kansas anymore. So I go home and start some research and I was educated to some pretty interesting facts.

For example, Australia has the highest skin cancer rate in the world, at a rate of 3.5 million cases. The United States reports 2 million a year. The current estimate is that one in five Americans will develop a form of skin cancer in their lifetime. I myself have had several pre-cancerous cells froze off my arms and neck by my dermatologist and after seeing that by 2015 one in 50 Americans will develop melanoma in their lifetime, I get checked. Caucasian men older than 50 have the highest risk of getting melanoma that any other demographic.

So what to do? Stay indoors and never go out in the daylight! Ok, the next best thing…use a sun screen and/or wear protective clothing. Either or makes me crazy. Wearing long sleeves in Florida is like setting yourself on fire in Hell and I hate that greasy feeling of lotions. But, I’m not real fond of getting a deadly case of melanoma either. So what about these sun screens. I quickly found out some facts out sun screens. The good people at Skin Envy in Tampa let my wife in on a couple of secrets that everyone should know. Simply look at the ingredients of your sunscreen. If there is anything on that list that ends with “ate’s” “one’s” or “ene’s”, don’t use it! These are potentially harmful ingredients and you are smearing it all over your body. When retinyl palmitate is used in a night cream, this form of vitamin A is supposed to have anti-aging effects. But on sun-exposed skin, retinyl palmitate (notice the “ate” at the end) may speed development of skin tumors and lesions, according to government studies. Twenty percent of the sunscreens, and 12 percent of SPF-rated moisturizers in this year’s guide contains retinyl palmitate. Avoid oxybenzone, a synthetic estrogen that penetrates the skin and can disrupt the hormone system. What you can look for are ingredients that have zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide.

Another concern is sprays, which I happen to like. However the FDA are doing studies on these sprays with concerns about inhaling the ingredients that linger in the air. If you do use a spray, never spray your face. Rather, spray your hands and apply to your face. As of December 2012, sun screen labels must provide information about what type of UV protection a sunscreen offers. You are looking for a “broad spectrum”, which means the sunscreen will protect you against UVB and UVA rays and helps prevent skin cancer and sunburn. They can no longer claim they are “waterproof”. The norm is 40 to 80 minutes in the water or sweating, then reapply. Also, avoid sunscreen with insect repellant and don’t bother with the sunscreen wipes.

I have found myself using sunscreen more. I usually always wear a “do-rag” because I don’t like lotion on my forehead that can get into my eyes and I tend to sunburn easily there. On long trip out of state and where the temps are better, I will wear a long sleeve light T-shirt. I hope this is just a little info for your rider’s tool box. It’s no fun to get to your long a$$ ride destination and be sunburn.

In case of sunburn, here is the medical treatment I copied from the web.

• Cool baths to reduce the heat.

• When you get out, pat dry, but leave some water on your skin. Apply a moisturizer to trap the water.

• Over the counter “Hydrocortisone” cream applied to your skin for discomfort.

• You can use aspirin or ibuprofen • Drink extra water • DO NOT treat with products that end with “caine”.

If your skin blisters, you have second degree burns. Allow the blisters to heal untouched. However, if the blisters cover a large amount of area, or you have chills, a headache, or fever, seek medical care.

Watch Out For Motorcycles!

Motorcycle Accident? Think You Can Go It Alone?

By Brad Souders A former client and good friend of mine was in a recent accident. He was on his way to work when the driver behind him was distracted (looking at her phone) and she rear-ended him at highway speeds, causing a four vehicle chain reaction type collision. The at-fault driver exited her car, repeatedly apologized to everyone involved, said she was “looking down” when the collision happened and someone called 911. First responders arrived; and soon afterwards, they transported the accident victim to the hospital. At the scene, the police remain behind to investigate and report the crash; and at this time, the at-fault driver suddenly changes her story, arguing she was “cut off”, arguing my client improperly changed lanes, denying fault for the crash.

In the days following, many questions arise. The insurance companies, with conflicting reports, question who is at fault for causing the accident. handle related claims for reimbursement; 11) Who are the best doctors to see for the treatment of injuries; and how other damages are paid, such as lost wages, future lost wages, mental anguish, pain and suffering and inconvenience; 12) When claims should be made; 13) How and when demands for settlement should be presented; and 14) How to resolve such claims by settlement or litigation, if necessary. Other issues arise and some or all of the questions may be somewhat “overwhelming” to any accident victim, especially if you have significant injuries or limited insurance.

During my time with Ryan we discussed performance as well. Even though we have bigger, better motors these days there is still much to be done for performance.

The best choices here are Exhaust, Cams, Heads, and high compression Pistons. Cams will keep Valves open; Heads will allow proper Air and Fuel mix, and high compression Pistons will provide adequate combustion, and your performance will soar.

While I have not gone down the performance road with my new ride I chose LED Lights, Highway Pegs, and Exhaust that has a medium sound output. I have no desire to have my exhaust deafen me. I also chose to install a navigation system. Hearing turn by turn directions through my sound system has been an upgrade that includes safety and convenience. Leading up to my final decisions I spent time looking over the Harley Wish book with a sharp pencil.

I created 2 lists. A “Gotta Have It”, and “Wanna Have It” list. With Ryan’s input I was able to integrate the best of the two and end up with a bike that reflects my personal style and has all the comforts for long rides.

VA Announces New Grants to Help End Veterans Homelessness

Washington, DC - August 11, 2014 - Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald today announced the award of approximately $300 million in grants that will help approximately 115,000 homeless and at-risk Veterans and their families. The grants will be distributed to 301 community agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is awarding grants to private non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives that provide services to very low-income Veteran families living in – or transitioning to – permanent housing.

Those community organizations provide a range of services that promote housing stability among eligible very low income Veteran families (those making less than 50 percent of the area median income). The grants announced today will fund the fourth year of the SSVF program.

“By working with community non-profit organizations, we have enlisted valuable partners in our fight to end homelessness,” said McDonald. “The work of SSVF grantees has already helped thousands of homeless Veterans and their families find homes and thousands more have been able to stay in their own homes.”

Under the terms of the grants, homeless providers will offer Veterans and their family members outreach, case management, assistance in obtaining VA benefits and assistance in receiving other public benefits.

Community-based groups can offer temporary financial assistance on behalf of Veterans for rent payments, utility payments, security deposits and moving costs.

In 2009, President Obama announced the Federal government’s goal to end 26

The campaign also includes a toll-free help line offering support for Veterans, their beneficiaries and VA employees who have questions and concerns about identity theft. The toll-free number is 1-855-578-5492, and it will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., EST.

Veteran homelessness by 2015. The grants are intended to help accomplish that goal.

According to the 2013 Point-in-Time Estimates of Homelessness, homelessness among Veterans has declined 24 percent since 2009.

In defending against identity theft, VA understands that awareness is critical. With More Than a Number, VA aims to educate Veterans on the risk of identity theft and how to avoid becoming a victim.

“We want to make sure our Veterans receive the care and support that they have earned and deserve,” McDonald added. “This is a program that, indeed, makes a difference.”

“Small changes can have big consequences,” Warren added. “Little things like shredding banking statements before throwing them away or using strong and unique passwords for all of your accounts can make a significant difference in protecting your identity from thieves who may try to use your personal information.”

Through the Eliminating Veteran Homelessness Initiative, VA committed over $1 billion in FY 2014 to strengthen programs that prevent and end homelessness among Veterans. VA provides a range of services to homeless Veterans, including health care, housing, job training, and education.

“We recognize that for Veterans, as for all Americans in the digital age, identity theft is a growing concern,” said Steph Warren, VA’s Chief Information Officer. “Our goal is to help educate and protect those who have protected this great country.”

Road Trippin’

Opinions are like noses, we all got one and they’re all different. All a nose basically has to do is hold up your shades.

There really isn’t a best nose. It just has to work for you. Every summer I get bombarded with the same questions, where’s the best place to go for a road trip? What time of year is best for a road trip? Do you have any favorite roads?

These are opinion questions I can’t truthfully answer. Like noses it just has to work for you. However like noses, there are some roads that stand out more the others.

The Appalachian Mountains offers some the best roads on the face of the planet! Every thing from the slower laid back 469 mile Blue Ridge Parkway packed with its rich historic past to the twisties in and around Cumberland Falls, Kentucky to the thrill of the 318 turns of Dragon Tail and the Moonshiner 28 in North Carolina.

Just open the map, throw a dart and go!

You can’t miss unless you miss the map.

Do some exploring, there’s more to see and do in the Appalachians then you could experience in a 1,000 lifetimes.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, US2 traces some of the most spectacular beach front riding you’ll find anywhere as it outlines the upper part of Lake Michigan.

A Nose For A Good Ride

on the other is something that only being there can describe. US2 also hosts all kinds of cool little towns as it leads you into Wisconsin and across the top of the country. The entire 2,570 miles of US2 offers something new at every mile. At times you are just a few yards from Canada. In Williston, North Dakota US2 drops down to pick up the Lewis and Clarke Trail which heads you to the southeastern tip of Glacier National Park.

US2 for sure is a beautiful ride. While there head north to the Going To The Sun Road that crosses through Glacier National Park. Now that’s a ride!

Coming out of Glacier, head south to Hamilton, Montana to Skalkaho Pass.

Any road on the map that has a caption warning you to get local info before riding just has to be fantastic and Skalkaho Pass is that. 45 miles of the most untamed, untouched and wild mountainous country in the lower 48. You are apt to see mountain goats or sheep, deer and just possibly a bear or two! Just when you think you’ve seen everything BAM, there it is gushing down from high above is a take your breath away waterfall! This is not an easy road to ride, but for those who choose to, it’s beyond words.

US12, The Northwest Passage Scenic Byway heading west from Missoula is another leg of the Lewis and Clarke Trail that takes you through Idaho into Lewiston, Washington. This is a stunning easy going 200 mile ride. Be sure to top off your tank, notta lotta places to get gas.

It’s a great ride, highly recommended.

If you love wide open riding Utah is it. I can’t begin to describe all the great roads in Utah, but one of the most famous is Utah 12. The All American Highway. This 120 mile stretch of road has it all. Utah 12 connects Bryce Canyon with Capital Reef National park. WOW! What a ride it is! Fair warning make sure you are wide awake and on your toes when you get to the

Hogback switchback or you’ll be on your back several hundred feet down! Utah 12 runs across the Grand Staircase National Monument. If I had to choose just one favorite this would be it. The grandeur and vastness of the surrounding area will blow you away!

The Million Dollar Highway US550.

OH, yea that’s what I talking ‘bout right there! The 24 mile, 45 minute stretch of US550 will seem like a lifetime and more like a million miles. This is not for the faint hearted. With its steep up grades, hair pin 5mph turns together with steep down grades and no shoulder or guard rails it’ll keep your heart pounding. This is the mother load of highways! High up in the San Juan Mountains the Million Dollar Highway is part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. I don’t know how scenic it really is, all I could do is pretty much watch my front tire, scared to death not get to close to the center line for fear of cars drifting across the zipper at each hair pin curve and trying not to drift to close the shoulder! OMG! I actually think I held my breath for the entire 24 mile trip! Yes sir, this is the mother of all roads!

There you have it, a few of my favorite roads. Pick one or two or all and just go.

Good day friends. Hope you picked this edition up while you were actually out on a ride. We’ve been seeing lots of rain this month of August which will probably drag over into September and with the rain comes those wet butt riders. I know I don’t have to tell you to be careful out there because who doesn’t try to be careful while riding?

It’s those unexpected things though that you may not be ready for. Washouts in the road, flooded areas, cars washing out our vision with their trail of water and so many other dangers that sneak upon us while riding in the rain. I remember back when I first started riding, I had no fear at all of the rain or the dangers it could present. It didn’t slow me down as long as I could see the road ahead of me. I can remember the time when we were running US 41 coming back from Ybor City in the rain and the water was up past hubby’s floorboards and my road pegs.

Tom was in front leading the way and this pick-up truck was coming toward us.

I just knew my husband wasn’t happy with this situation since he was wetter than a drowned rat which he wouldn’t of been if I had of listened to him and left the event when he first said let’s go. But me, hey I was having fun I didn’t care how wet I got, I was just happy to be riding. Then when that truck passed my husband coming my way it threw one of the biggest fans of water I’d ever seen while I was on a bike. I will always

remember laughing and saying now you see him now you don’t, I thought that was so funny and then I got hit with that fan of water, WOW!! I couldn’t see crap but WHAT A RUSH, THAT WAS FUN!!! . I miss those kind of riding days, that kind of stuff was always so exciting to me. Heck who am I kidding? Right now I miss riding period, I can’t wait to get all my doctors releases so I can start trike shopping.

Well any way you know the saying “If you don’t ride in the rain, then you don’t ride” and I’ll take a wet day in the saddle over no day any day!

A big thank you goes out this month to all those that come to LaBelle to support the Bears and BBQ cook-off for the ACT. A special thanks to Lonnie Brick of Punta Gorda for coming up with the idea of a fundraiser to assist in the building of the new shelter for abused women and children here in LaBelle. Next I’d like to thank Donta Morris for organizing a successful poker run with the Women InThe Wind -Thunder Maidens Chapter, I’m sure the cash for ACT and the bears for the sheriff’s dept. were greatly appreciated. Congratulations to Allen Cox for taking first and second place in the bike show, you’ve built some awesome looking bikes! The wall plaque for the largest group to ride in went to the Latin American Motorcycle Association, head count at registration was over 30. Having an event like this in the middle of the summer not knowing if it’s going to get

rained out and having all the tourist not here is a tough one to judge the success before it takes place, there were lots of folks with their fingers crossed. Luck was with us, it was a very good day for everyone!!

Now here is something for all of you out there getting ready to put an event on, there is a meeting starting at the Harley Davidson of Fort Myers called “Motorcycle Events R Us” They are meeting the last Saturday monthly to assist in organizing event dates in hopes of keeping so many from overlapping.

Meeting starts at 11 so if you have something coming up or are trying to pick a date go to the meeting! It would also be a sure way to get your event listed on the Go For A Ride Magazine events listing, I plan on being at the meetings.

Let’s see now, some place to ride to eat. I have a place easy to find that just reopened called Crossroads Café. They are open for breakfast, lunch & dinner.

They are located on Hwy 80 in Morse Shores. All home cooked food and pretty tasty… They also look like if you call ahead you can have tables put together for a large group.

P roadsides in the area shimmered with broken bottles, aluminum cans, and plastic bags clinging to the barbed wire fences. The park itself was remarkably cleaner. The canyon has water flowing through it and it is an oasis in a land mostly barren. Even in the middle of the day we wore our jackets as our constant companion cold never left us.

We met Paul and Emily in Cody, WY last year on our way to Yellowstone. We hit it off so well that we rode by their place near San Luis Obispo, CA on our ride home from Alaska last fall. We agreed to meet at the north rim of the Grand Canyon this year and tour Utah together. Paul’s pet phrase is “It’s all good”.

That covers our time together this year. Sunny skies, incredible vistas were with us for the next several days. So were the cold temperatures.

We camped at 9000’ near Bolder, UT one night.

Paul spotted a herd of deer across the meadow at dusk. Our fire did little good as the mercury dropped to the low 30’s. Janie and I were glued together all night trying to stay warm.

No matter what, be sure to put Utah Hwy12 between Bryce Canyon National Park and Loa, UT on your bucket list. Hell’s Backbone alone was worth the ride from Florida. Our time with Paul and Emily came to an end too soon as they headed back to Southern California from Richfield, UT while we turned north for Idaho.

Bike Won’t Start?

There is nothing worse than getting to your favorite riding area, putting all of your gear on, unloading your bike, and then realizing the bike won’t start. I have suffered through this a time or two, but it’s not a real common occurrence for me.

I do have some friends that seem to have these issue more often than they should.

Proper maintenance will usually help you avoid most of the issues, but sometimes even that doesn’t cover all the bases.

If you have this problem, here is a few tips that might get you back on the track right away.

First thing I always do is check to see if

it’s a gas or a fire issue. A few quick steps can help you narrow things down and get you back on the trail.

First step is to pull the spark plug and see if you have a spark. Ground the electrode on the plug and push or kick the kick starter on the bike. If you see a spark, then you know you probably have a gas issue. If you don’t see a spark, then you probably have a fire issue. If you have a really weak or intermittent spark that could be a dirty flywheel.

So if you have no spark, check all your connections to you coil. Check the wires going to the stator. Once you check all the connections, do the plug test again.

Still no spark? There’s one more thing to check.

If you have no spark or a really weak spark, the issue could be a dirty flywheel or stator. This happens a lot because we power wash our dirt bikes. Sometimes the water from the pressure washer pushes the ignition gasket out of the way and allows debris to get in the ignition.

This can cause your ignition to fail. All you need to do is remove the ignition cover, take some very fine sandpaper and run it around the flywheel and the contacts on the stator. Once complete put the ignition cover back on. It usually fixes the issue.

If this doesn’t fix the issue another thing you can do is check the wires and the kill switch button. Make sure they are connected and the button is not stuck.

If you have a spark, then it’s a gas issue.

The modern four strokes are finicky. A lot of people think they need to give the bike gas when they kick it. This isn’t the case for modern bikes. If the bike is cold, try

keeping your hand off the throttle and kicking the bike. If you think it is already flooded and you smell gas, turn the throttle all the way open and hold it. Now try kicking the bike. If it starts, it was just flooded.

If you don’t smell gas and you think you are not getting into the intake, check you petcock and make sure it is on. If it is, check your fuel line and make sure it isn’t clogged with any debris. If you can get gas to flow to the intake, the last thing you can try is bump starting the bike.

Find a big hill or get someone to push.

Once you get up to a good speed, drop the bike into gear with the clutch out.

Hopefully these tips help you out sometime. If you do these steps and you still have an issue, there might be a bigger issue you may need to look into.

Proper maintenance will help avoid most of these issues, but if not, you have some ideas what to do next.

AMA petitions to reinstate lane-splitting guidelines in California PICKERINGTON, Ohio – July 23, 2014The American Motorcyclist Association initiated a petition drive to convince the California Office of Administrative Law to once again offer guidelines on lane splitting on state websites.

A complaint from a Sacramento man resulted in an Office of Administrative Law order to remove lane-splitting guidelines from websites for the California Highway Patrol, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and brochures and other documents detailing safety information about the practice from offices.

California is the only state in the United States where the practice, 40

supported by the AMA, is legal. The AMA also supports the implementation of lane-splitting laws in other states, coupled with extensive rider and driver education programs.

“Removal of the DMV brochures is a big loss,” said Nick Haris, AMA western states representative and a member of the California Motorcyclist Safety Program Advisory Committee, which helped write the guidelines. “The DMV offices and website are the first places California drivers look for information.

And this is vital information for them to have.”

The CHP also removed references to lane splitting from its online FAQ, where information had been available long before the agency released its guidelines early in 2013.

“Lane splitting is still allowed, and motorcyclists are still using this longrecognized riding technique to relieve traffic congestion and improve safety,” Haris said. “But now, neither riders nor motorists have a place to turn for authoritative guidelines on the practice.” w w w.gofarmag.com

The CHP posted its guidelines with the intention of helping motorcyclists and motorists understand safe practices and to discourage unsafe lane splitting.

The guidelines disappeared at the urging of Kenneth Mandler, of Sacramento, Calif., who petitioned the OAL in the fall of 2013, claiming that the CHP guidelines were an “underground regulation” -- a rule that would be enforced, even though it had not been the subject of the Administrative Procedure Act’s prescribed process.

“OAL did not issue a legal opinion as to whether the lane splitting guidelines constitute a regulation,” OAL Director Debra M. Cornez wrote in an email to the AMA. “Since CHP notified OAL that it would not issue, use, enforce, or attempt to enforce the guidelines, OAL was precluded under the law from addressing the merits of Mr. Mandler’s petition. Therefore, OAL never made a determination that the guidelines constituted a regulation.”
