SUMMER
e still have 2 big festivals left on the calendar for the Scottish pop/rock audience to enjoy during the summer months. T in the Park is first up across the weekend of 6th - 8th July and then we have Wickerman on 20-21 JULY.
So who’s who? and what’s happening? T IN THE PARK
http://www.tinthepark.com
For those without tickets they ARE still available for T and can be picked up at the moment for 25% less than their face value - so a £199 all weekend camping ticket can be had for £150 online - check with reputable ticket agencies or hit Gumtree and Ebay BUT do make sure you know what your buying is genuine. I have to say that, having been a keen gig goer over the years, I’ve only been to T a handful of times throughout its history. Whenever it came up it was always filled with bands I had already seen a good few times already so couldn’t really justify the hefty price tag they placed on it. The last time I went was a few years back when I actually won a couple of weekend tickets. I was actually promoting our own all day event on the Sat so couldn’t go and when i went up on the Sun I actually spend the majority of the time in the T break tent. The line-up for me has changed drastically from a rock/indie festival to something more reminiscent of an extension to the X-factor tour and heavy reliant on throwaway pop and hip hop artists. Even when they do have something reminiscent of ‘Rock’ on the bill it’s all too often a stale wrinkly impression of the rock I know and love. I truly think that they are aiming to retain that ‘2nd best festival’ tag a little too hard and are diluting their product to suit that aim. Maybe it’s a sign that this year’s festival was heavily rumoured to NOT be a sellout? And with the well documented online shady ticketing agency scams reported on our tv screen this year that theory may just hold a good bit of water. I checked ebay this month for TITP tickets and full priced £199 camping weekend tickets were actually selling for close to £150 a massive 25% less than their face value..!!!! That’s just not normal is it?
bands worldwide know that a Scottish crowd are arguably the BEST crowd in the world and If ever there was a time for someone to step in and start up a proper modern ROCK/METAL type festival in the style of Download, Sonisphere or maybe slightly more edgier version of Rockam Ring or even Reading – its NOW…!!!!! TITP 2012 line-up highlight for this year is surely going to be The Stone Roses (if they manage to stay together long enough). I don’t really see anything else shining out with any of the other artists. Look on the brightside though… hopefully the weather will be nice for the weekend. Line-up: Snow Patrol, Kasabian, Emeli Sandé, Calvin Harris, Florence + The Machine, The Stone Roses, Swedish House Mafia, Example, Skrillex, Happy Mondays, Jessie J, New Order, Rizzle Kicks, David Guetta, Twin Atlantic, Mastodon, Major Lazer, The Darkness, Elbow, Tinie Tempah, Keane, Cher Lhoyd and too many other to mention.
On the rock music subject I checked out the line-up to the newest Scottish festival ‘Rockness’, which will unfortunately have passed before this goes to press, I seriously think they need to take a long hard look at their branding and consider renaming that to ‘INDIE’ness’. In fact most band Page 4

R FESTVAL GUIDE WICKERMAN
http://www.thewickermanfestival.co.uk/
Wickerman is not a new festival and in fact they celebrate their 11th year of in 2012 and promise an eclectic music line-up and exciting arts and entertainment for all ages. Despite their somewhat lengthy time in existence (TITP having only been on the go for 7 years more) the festival is rather a low key affair with a general feeling of a ‘has been’ or a more leftfield kinda festival. Surprisingly they actually have TEXAS playing this year? And, although well past their sell by date for me I’d have thought that they are still pretty huge in the states enough to warrant them missing out small appearances like this. Wickerman stick to a format where they have specific tents/stages for specific genres or styles of music rather than mixing them all across different areas. What they do have is a dedicated Scooter tent with what I’d loosely class as Punk/New wave/Ska era bands which is probably where I will end up spending all my time.

PACK LIGHT Only take as much stuff as you can survive without apart from your phone / camera ONLY take things you wouldn’t be too bummed about losing! If you do end up with a massive bag filled with everything you need OR there are a number of you going consider purchasing a folding wheel barrow or even better a hand truck (go for a 90kg one at least) to help you transport all your gear to your camp site.
PLAN FOR RAIN For Scottish festivals the number 1 thing in your bag has to be some rain gear! It’s more than likely that at some point over the weekend you’re going to get a drizzle, or at worst a downpour and sure you can hide out in the tents for a bit but you have to venture out sometime and when you do the rain will inevitably get you. Now what exactly do you pack for inclement weather? Let me try to explain. The most useful items to have in the rain, by far, are plastic bags. You need these in various sizes so I’d suggest 3 kind’s all available from the supermarket; re-sealable food bags (camera/mobile/money/id etc), pedal bin bags (shoes/ clothes/food etc.) and refuse sacks (bedding/anything bigger and can double as poncho’s) If you can get completely waterproof shoes or galoshes then great, if not and its worm enough when it rains then wear sandals. Slip on shoes are a nightmare and are hard to keep a hold of on slippy ground, and horrible in the mud. Whether it be wellies or whatever its super important to take care of your feet! Having wet feet for long spells can develop some pretty nasty problems and at the least can potentially spoil your weekend. So change your footwear often and take every opportunity to get them dried out. When the inevitable does happen and you have to change out of your wet clothes and socks, remember to put them in one of your bin bags until it stops raining. This will help keep unwanted smells in your tent, when the sun comes out hang them up. Pack a little bottle of Febreeze and that will let you spray down the clothes, hang them out to dry, and you can get away with wearing them again in an emergency. Camping has its own little tips and tricks and some things are designed in very specific ways that you need to know in order to keep things the way you need them to be. Always pitch your tend as high up as possible if not do it on a slight slope and never at the bottom of a hill. Place a tarpaulin under it before pitching to avoid groundwater seeping up into the floor of the tent. If the tarp is bigger than the tent fold the sticking out bits UNDER the tarp itself so water has nowhere to collect. Do use your rain guard on the top of the tent as the inner part of the tent isn’t nessesarly waterproof at all. These guards are designed to deflect the rain water away from the inner tent. If you neglect to stake the rain guard down correctly it simply won’t keep the tent, you or your stuff dry. With your stuff inside the tent try not to shove things against the outer walls as if rain does start it will accumulate at the edges of the tent so making sure all your bedding, clothes, and valuables etc. are in pulled to the centre of the tent is 6a good idea. Do not put anything up against the your tent. Page JULYsides JUNE 2012 2012of --issue issue (19) (18)

PLAN FOR THE SUN Like the rain, it is difficult to predict exactly how the sun will behave during your festival so be best to be prepared and carry a heavy factor sun cream with you – you’re not there for a suntan so go for a heavier factor then you usually buy to ensure that you enjoy the weekend. Sunshine and alcohol of course don’t mix well so do pace yourself across the day with your booze and drink plenty of fluids of the non-alcoholic variety throughout the day to avoid a visit to the St Johns Ambulance tents. Try not to have anything in your tent that will go off if left in the warm for a few days. If you need to for health reasons bring a coolbox and keep it in that. FASHION Fashion wise we can skip most of the usual trendy tips as anything goes at festivals! And we mean ANYTHING. PLAN NOT TO PLAN There is so much on offer a modern festivals nowadays that it can quickly become a massive headache trying to decide what YOU want to do and who YOU want to see, then add your friends into the equation and it’s a recipe for disaster! The best plan is to pick maybe 1-2 main things that you really wanna see or do per day and take the rest as it comes. This way you are far more likely to stumble across new and unusual things which can be the highlight of a festival. Basically try to leave time to relax and go with the festival vibe and flow. YOU SMELL Even the cleanest among us will tell you that after a few days of junk food, porta-loos, broken showers and bedding down in a field you’re gonna stink..!!!! Just remember everyone is in the same situation and I can assure you after a few plastic pints of Tennents you won’t really care too much anyway. For cases like these you need a big packet of baby wipes in your kit bag and stick a good few some in a food bag each day so you can carry these with you throughout the day. Much needed when your covered in sauce from whatever you’ve just ate or when you’re heading towards the dreaded toilet block just knowing you’re gonna find a row of broken, empty or invisible hand sanitizers. BOOZE! IF you plan on indulging heavily in the booze stakes then it is a must to take your own supply in with you or its going to be one hell of an expensive weekend for you my friend. Remember though that even the smallest of festivals will not allow glass anywhere near the event, never mind the camping areas. So only buy beer in cans and always take time to empty your favourite vodka/whisky/alcopop into plastic containers and buy wine in boxes instead of bottles. As usual, the arenas area is a no go area for taking in your own drink, so carry enough cash to get you through the day or come up with more adventurous ways of fooling the stewards. Although some of them know every trick in the books guys, so be warned. FRIENDS REUNITED To best enjoy you festival experience you need to embrace it, get to know your neighbouring tents in the campsite. You will inevitably get roped into to all sorts of shenanigans which all go to making the campsite a much more enjoyable place to be. More often than not it is these random people that you meet that become your friends for life. JULY 2012 - issue (19)

ldritch Scanty as it stands is an acoustic folk/rock/acoustic duo formed in late 2011 by Chris Johnston on lead vocals/guitar and Liam Docherty on lead guitar/backing vocals with both chipping in on any percussion work needed. The band started life after Liam received a call from Chris looking for a jam session. The two guys had met years before at a local gig in Bathgate when they were in other bands that hadn’t come too much and the rest is history as they say. It only took 10 minutes of the pair playing together for them to realise that they may just have stumbled across something a little special. I’d agree for sure that there is definitely something a little special and different about ES, they are different, but still familiar in a way that makes you immediately warm to the guys and what they do. They have a sound that appears stripped out but somehow remain very full. There is a good use of a single kick drum which helps keep some of the tracks on course and adds somewhat to the overall dimension of the tracks. ‘Hold On’ kicks off it a gritty style that seems pretty popular now in bluesy/folk music. The opening few bars remind me so much of another track I but I can’t for the life of me remember what it is and it’s driving me bonkers. It expands into a kind of mellow vocal drawl driven by killer use of slide guitar and the introduction of one of those thumping kick drums. The initial chorus is just as mellow and sweeps across you can’t help singing along and tapping your wee feet in time to that god damn infectious thud. Page 12
JULY 2012 - issue (19)
‘The Prestige’ hints at a little more experimenting being done vocally between the guys and it seems that the vocal is way too loud and in your face on the verses but it defo comes into its own in the chorus sections maybe a track crying out for a remix or re-record for me? As the track developed though most shortcomings were forgiven and I really hoped it would kick into something more upbeat towards the end and a killer track in the making for me. Final track ‘Just Like Me’ comes at you like an 18 wheeler juggernaut of acoustic folk with no brakes. By the time the chorus smacks you in the face with its ‘Just Like Me’ repeated line these guys have got you eating out of the palm of their hands as you thump out that bloody rhythm again with your now aching foot. For me it’s the standout track and is a stormer of a song. When I look at newer bands like this I always consider what they could be and what potential they have and quite frankly the potential that Eldritch Scanty has is running over the edge of the musical sink, it’s flooding the kitchen floor, seeping out the back door and is filling the kids paddling pool in the back garden so the kids can have fun in the sun. Even with such a short career the guys can now check of the ‘Song to appear on TV show’ box on their musical bucket list after their material was used on an episode of Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire aired in June. I for one can’t wait for the 2nd offering ‘The Five Points’ to arrive. Checkout the guys tracks on their facebook page and get along to see them at a show if you can @ www.facebook.com/ EldritchScanty

f infectious tunes and crazy, energetic stage antics are your cup of tea then look no further than West Lothian’s very own indie inspired punk band
The Begbies.
Around the end of 2009 Liam Corbett (Guitar) and Stuart Arfield (Vocal) decided to form a band after a drunken Karaoke session one night. After a while the current line-up was formed with Ross ‘Rosco’ Mackinnon (drums) and Brian Curry (bass) and more recently Gary Ovens (guitar) adding to the line-up. The band has a very classic British indie rock sound, this might ruffle a few feathers but to me it’s not really a ‘punk’ sound for me, fair enough punk can cover a lot of different sounds and it is a tad more stripped back than a lot of the bands from the past 5 years but still very uniquely British indie if you ask me. I come from a punk background so maybe it’s just what I’m used to. From their online tracks you get a pretty good across the board idea of what The Begbies are capable of bringing to the table. ‘Balled’ is the simplest of the tunes on offer with its simple song structure, vocal melody and not too over the top musicianship, it does enough to get you in the right mood for some more from the guys. ‘Off The Cuff’ kicks things up about 6 gears and we now are treated to a track more akin to the a View/Libertines track but with a very Begbies’esqe twist in both the lyrics and in a vocal melody that a lot of major label signed bands would simply kill for. The track shows that you don’t really need to throw everything at the mixing desk to come up with a cracking tune. Now ‘White Feather’ is a different matter altogether and something I like to see bands doing a lot and that is writing SLOWER songs!!!! Songs that breathe, make great use of space, and take you on wee journey’s. Tracks like these show that there is a distinct confidence running through all aspects of the band. The backline are not scared to pull things back and play in a more laid back fashion, letting the song breath so people can hear clearly everything that they are playing. Add to that guitars that don’t really give 2 fu*ks
what you might want to hear and never go over the top, they play simple cool licks and rhythms that all play together and complement the overall song… add to that the most important part… a super slick and engaging vocal and your onto a winner. A pretty perfect setup for a pretty perfect song... To get the full Begbie experience you simply must see them live and luckily the guys are never shy of a personal appearance or two and are seen regularly playing in the local area as well as Edinburgh and Glasgow. They have graced the stages of King Tuts, ABC2, Cab Voltaire, Capitol, Captains Rest and locally place’s like Da Vinci’s and The Attic. 2012 also seen the guys playing an amazing set at the first ever Big Stooshie Festival in fife. The future looks bright for the band with a debut video release just about to happen and also recently signed a management contract with Over The Bridge Promotions who look after Root System, The Cundeez and The Nature Boys. Checkout whats going on with the guys over at their web site @ www.thebegbies.co.uk STOP PRESS Unfortunately we have just learned that bass player Brian has left the band and the Bagbies are actively seeking a replacement – if you’re interested get in touch with the guys on their facebook page @ www. facebook.com/thebegbies

irst things first, before you start a new summer look you need to do a quick but ruthless spring clean, get rid of all your tired old stuff, the stained, damaged or torn and don’t forget those items that are too small.
R E M M U S
I know it might be hard but if its defo something you think you might wear again once you lose a few pounds or in some far away certain circumstance, then box it and move it out the way, don’t just leave it as all of these will be cluttering up your much needed wardrobe space (or in some cases, floor space! yeh.. you know who you are) and the aim is to free as much space as possible for your brand new summer 2012 look. So once you have finished your clear out and boxed up or passed you’re not needed items over to your local charity shop. I prefer to give to the well-known shops, staffed by blue rinse volunteers etc. than to the new ‘bag on the door’ people as I’ve heard some pretty scathing reports about how much aid actually gets to the people who need it. Or even generously passed over to a younger (less fashion conscious) member of your family or friends, everything’s good as it all helps us reach our end goal. Now let’s get down to filling our brand new space with all those cutting edge garments and accessories needed to look super cool this summer.

Blues Broth
Now most fashion conscious guy should have a typical navy suit kicking around but unfortunately Navy is on the way out dudes! There is a new class of blue suit tailoring that has hit the street that is making your standard navy suit look pretty much grandad’esque. These new breed of suits don’t just stick to classic navy, no they give us all kinds of blues, from deep ocean blue of Canali to the softer blues of Kiton, the electric blues of Ravazzolo. There’s plenty to choose from. If your budget doesn’t stretch to perhaps replacing an entire suit think about at least changing the stock buttons to something a little less formal. It makes an amazing difference and can bring a drab jacket or blazer kicking and screaming into 2012.
To Print or Not to Print? 2012 is all about pattern and print and this year may well see it truly stamp its mark on menswear. The main players in the field are…
Floral – that’s right, the female of the species no longer
rules over the floral print. You can wear floral patterns and still keep up that macho image. Prada recently used actor Michael Pitt to show off their massive collection of floral print garments and they not only appeared on Prada’s shirts but also on shorts and made their way onto full length trousers in pastel pinks, oranges and greens.
Geometric
Every few seasons Geometric patterns re-appear and 2012 is one of those years. Burberry has been seen as one of its biggest supporters and their 2012 collection included several round neck tees and jumpers with triangle, square and rectangle prints in using primary colour patterns. Some of their footwear range also echoed this with woven leather, fringed laceups seeing sharp injections of aqua blues and mustard yellows. Page 32

FASHION N - MFASHEIONN - MEN - M EN - MEN FASHION - MEN - MEN - MEN - MEN - M FASHION Camouflage
Popularity has recently increased for a modern camo look. The military trend is one that always seems to find its way into most menswear styles in some shape or form but this time designers have decided to give camouflage print it’s day of glory. They include Dsquared2, with their camo print hooded parkas.
Polka Dot
Probably one of the most underused patters in menswear is the polka dot, and understandably so. 2012 is maybe the time for the polka dot to take its shot at glory if it can pull it off in a masculine fashion. The problem with our little dot friend is that is can easily be gaudy and at times pretty over the top and its one of those patterns where colours and size really do matter. Like a lot of men’s fashion the key is in using mute tones married with a very fine dot. Follow these rules and you can find some cool garments knocking around.

A good white shirt is probably the most versatile item you can have in your wardrobe. It can look smart or casual depending on what you wear with it and how you wear it. Tuck it in with a good pair of dress trousers and jacket with a classic pair of shoes and your covered for a multitude of occasions. Wear it loose with a pair of jeans and your look is completely differently yet still remains in top stylish form for 2012.
Trousers Jeans are kinda losing out this year to chinos or smart skinnies or even summer shorts. Stay away from cold winter colours like Navy and grey. You should aim for something with more colour. Check our ‘IN Colours’ chart for ideas.
Ovesized? If you want to be a real trailblazer in the trouser department then it’s a sorry goodbye to those fav skinny and slim trousers you love so much and a big hello to XXL. The idea is pretty straight forward, the trousers should become wider around your thighs and looser around the calf area.
Coats We won’t mention the weather you know yourself what it’s going to be like regardless of what the weatherman tells you. You can still get away with a decent trench but for smarter occasions, a blazer is a must. Bright colours for nights out with friends, darker colours for smarter occasions.

If you must insist on having one of these in your 2012 arsenal then the trick is to go pale with your colour choice.
T-Time You should always have a few T shirts to go with a lot of the stuff you have in your wardrobe. They can be worn under a shirt or on their own. For maximum usage stay away from image prints as they are a proverbial minefield and can really put across a message that can become something you don’t want all to quickly in the multi-media world we live in. Go for plain solid colours or ones with blocks of colour instead; consider maybe adding some speckles and stripes into your collection as these are all working their way into a cool summer look. The usual high street stores will all have a good selection for this season.
Sweatshirts As we all know Scottish weather has a tendency for being a tad unpredictable at the best of times. So a stylish everyday over layer in your summer wardrobe is a must. Sweatshirts fit the bill as they come in a wide variety of wearable looks. Like with your T’s, for maximum wear stay away from image prints, stripes/hoops are always good if you stick to the correct colour scheme. The same applies to contrasting sleeves. If going for a breast logo the bigger the better but do remember the ‘image print’ rule.

Footwear After sprucing up the rest of your wardrobe we couldn’t leave out your footwear could we? Espadrilles come and go, so this season if you are going to wear them make sure you get yourself a jazzy pair. Ones with stripes, dots or pastel colours is the way to go for the summer sun. Coloured Soles The in thing for 2012 is coloured soles. You wouldn’t think a small ring of colour around the shoe’s edge would do much but trust me it has the power to lift your entire look.
Bag Military bags are making a big play for dominance this summer like the Ugg Military Tote bag for men. It’s a washed-canvas bag with aged silver detailing, dog-tag-inspired hanging logos, and an obligatory macho shoulder strap. Anything army related and in a shoulder bag type setup will suffice.

Sure you might feel at your most comfortable in those all-purpose baggies, but there isn’t a whole lot of 2012 style in there. Pick up a new pair with 3 top looks to go for. Try a pair with a braver pattern or even stripes, or for the really daring a cool paisley pattern may pull it off. Stay clear of solid colours for the most part unless you’re going all out for a more fitted look. For the brave among us try a shorter length than you’re perhaps dared to before, now the time to go all out. Be careful not to go too short as we are defo not in the Speedo area just yet. Maybe take them to just a few inches above the knee and look to get rid of as much of that typical puffy inner bulk as possible and try not to have any strange drawstrings. Look for shorts that you can wear throughout the day, both in and out of the water. For shorts the ¾ length is defo for the ‘older’ generation, everything should now be at least above the knee and skinny. Linen shorts are also making a play this year.

rend Floral Jean T 2012 is all about the floral prints. It’s pretty much the same most years but now it’s the turn of floral jeans, which are set to be has become one of this year’s biggest trends. Jeans are available in soft pastel colours as well as louder tones for the more daring out there. Wear them with smart jackets or cardigans.
Maxi Dress If you want to remind everyone of your more girlish and sophisticated side of your nature then get yourself a maxi dress. A summer printed maxi dress is a crucial part of every woman’s wardrobe. They are long, flowing and more often than not are flattering to a large percentage of body shapes and are super comfy. They can also be very smart and elegant with the correct accessories. Wear them with flat shoes and some quirky jewellery and accessories for a beautiful dreamy summer look.

Don’t be scared to experiment and grab yourself a bold coloured blazer and pair it with your fav shorts, jeans or dress for total impact. Remember though for best effect try to marry your blazer with simple pieces but if you’re feeling a little risky go ahead and mix it up a bit with other colourful items you have… you won’t know until you try it…

Shoes This season footwear is pretty strange and not necessarily all that practical. Perhaps the biggest standout is that the quirkier they, the better they are. I’d say you can’t go a season without adding at least one pair of these 4 standouts to your shoe collection. Flowers Flowers seem to be blooming with floral additions to lots of shoes this year along with lots of prints so you should be able to find lots of patterns out there to suit lots of different tastes from the subtle to completely over the top. Shoe Hardware Shoe Hardware will also be making an appearance in summer 2012 with zips, studs and buckles in abundance across all ranges of footwear from casual pumps to half boots. Booties On the subject of boots we will still be seeing High-heeled Booties still holding firm as a lot of manufacturers seem to have found methods of keeping booties different and colourful for 2012. Big for summer is the cut away bootie which leaves lots of skin showing through the cut outs. Sandals Battling back from 2008 and streaking on to be even bigger this year is the gladiator sandal. The difference this year will be a heavier strapped heel and the use of bold colours.
Bags For most women bags are just as significant as clothing, shoes or any other items in their wardrobe. Therefore it is crucial to be able to select a bag that suits ‘you’ and that will stay in this year’s trend. To help you out Lets do a real quick rundown of what’s hot in the most common types of bags. Knitted bags look different and trendy but be careful to pair it with the right clothing.

FASHION N - WFAO MEN - WFASHION OMEN - WOM SHION - WOMEN - WOMEN - WOME FASHION Large clutch bags are in this year. They should be large enough to carry all the stuff you need throughout the day. These bags are coming in both neutral colours to suit the more formal situation and in more outlandish schemes for more relaxed use. Printed bags are getting more exposure in 2012 as designers advise women to try to be more adventurous and daring with their bags during the 2012 fashion season. So it should be pretty easy to pick up items with bold designs and patters that are interesting to the eye. Try to keep in mind the other items in your wardrobe when choosing though. Foldover bags are holding strong from a few seasons ago and will be the same in 2012. They are popular because they are available in a large variety of sizes, colours, styles and prints. Shoulder bags are always in the trend but this year it’s only small that is going to be cool. So small in fact that they will mostly be carried in your hand, as opposed to your shoulder. Satchel bags as usual are sticking around as they are super comfortable. They are the tardis of bags as they don’t look that big but you’ll be amazed at just how much you can cram into them. The Wristlets trendy is going to be huge in 2012. They come in a variety of designs and tones to suit every look. Large bags are out this year but mid-size tote and weekender bags are going to be very popular during the summer months. Look for bright colour that will make you stand out from the crowd. Tiny Bags: Women seem to have some kind of addiction to very small bags, perhaps because they can be good for those special occasions that crop up and of course they look kinda interesting. Well this year those type of bags are going tiny and are on course to be a summer hit.

ACEBOOK have started charging you to distribute your status updates/wall posts etc. to ALL of your LIKES. It’s absolutely correct that FB have introduced a new system that physically STOPS those people who have a Facebook FAN/MAG/BUS/ORG etc. from sending posts to all their LIKES. For page owners you will have noticed a new feature appeared in the past month or two. It is at the foot of each post you make on your timeline pages and it is basically telling you exactly how many of your LIKES actually got to see the post you just made for them to see. The example below shows a company with close to 10,000 LIKES and only 4,000 saw their post – and this only because 59 people commented and 7 liked the post otherwise it would have been probably down as low as 15-20%
The system is based on a complicated bunch of calculations that FB uses to eventually arrive at who actually get to see your posts. FB are unwilling to release exactly what these are but it’s widely known that one aspect is how your LIKES interact with you. A few examples of how this effects the various types of FB users out there are detailed next. For artists with ‘Band’ pages EXAMPLE 1 : Someone likes your ‘BAND’ page and reads with interest all the stuff you post, buys your Page 44
NEW SYSTEM LAUNCHED WITH AIM OF CHARGING PAGE OWNERS TO SEND POSTS TO LIKES music and merch etc but rarely comment on your posts or shares them on FB as none of their other friend like your band and those who do already get the same info because they have also liked your page. Using the new system this person would now RARELY see your posts/ updates. EXAMPLE 2 : Someone likes your ‘BAND’ page and reads your posts, likes them and shares them with all their friends and other social network platforms, they don’t come to shows and stay in another country and rarely buy your merch etc. Using the new system this person would have a higher chance of getting all your posts/updates. The same analogy can be said of company/organisation/shop pages etc. EXAMPLE : Someone likes you ‘SHOP’ page and reads your product updates/posts as they like the things you sell. When they see something they like they pop down to your shop the next day and pick one up. You know them as they shop with you all the time. Again they don’t comment, like or share your posts as they only use FB for a few friends and family and of course other shops or service pages etc. This person now only sees your updates sporadically (perhaps less than 20% of your posts) Being new to FB it’s not really a major problem to us but to think that someone with 7,000 likes is now only getting less than a 1000 people seeing their updates is a real kick in the teeth for them as its probably took many years for them to build up that customer base. JULY 2012 - issue (19)
The only way to guarantee that ALL your LIKES see ALL of your posts is to pay FB for EACH and every post you make, individually, and at increasing rates until you reach 100%.
‘Show in News Feed’ There has been a little myth doing the rounds at the moment regarding a ‘work around’ where you tell all of your LIKES to carry out a wee process to force FB to send them your posts, well remember it’s now less than 20% of your likes so hey? How do you reach the other 80%? So you tell the 20% anyway and they need to… “hover over the LIKE(d) button and make sure that the ‘Show in News Feed’ option is checked” Simply put… it DOESN’T WORK…!!!! This function is there to basically allow your LIKES to ‘Stop’ seeing your news feed and it has no real impact in getting past the new FB ‘PAY ME’ system and the new algorithm will still kick in and stop any new posts getting to even those people who have done the hover trick. It may force through a couple of posts as a one off but rest assured they will stop and revert back to the algorithm very quickly.
There is simply no way round this new system other than paying FB to ensure that all your posts reach your LIKES. If you want to try to increase the likely hood of your ‘Likes’ still seeing your updates you would be better asking them to always LIKE or COMMENT on anything you post. That was the FB system will know that they are interested in your content and pass other updates over to their news feed.
and plain text only posts.... everything else you will pay for...?????? Ian Maude, internet analyst at Enders Analysis, told the BBC, “We’re going to see a lot more ideas like
this where they (Facebook) are testing out different ways to try to make money.” Now.... where did I put my MySpace and Twitter account details....????
This is the only the first step in FACEBOOK’s overall plan as its profits from advertising revenue drop and it sees a falling share value since it was floated on the stock exchange as a ‘public company’ in May 2012. Shares fell to $27.55 today, 30% less than the $45 it reached on its first day of trading. So perhaps all those worried posters/bloggers etc. who first broke the news that the FB Master plan was for a platform where we see a 100% FEE based FB where, eventually, over time, EVERYONE will pay... for EVERYTHING. It will be a completely subscription based service and its widely thought that a free account will only get you 1 profile picture

few months ago I was watching a move from director Brant Sersen, called Splinterheads. The movie tells the story of
a young guy Justin Frost, a slacker, whose life is turned upside down when he meets Galaxy, a carny girl with a love for life like he has never seen before. Midway through the movie Galaxy takes Justin on a treasure hunt and explains to him the concept of Geocaching. Like me, he had no clue what she was talking about so I was glad when she further told us that “Geocaching is kinda like, hiking and treasure hunting at the same time!”. The movie then shows how she JULY 2012 - issue (19)
tracks down her ‘cache’ using her trusty GPS system. The coordinates she enters lead her to a small plastic sandwich container hidden at the bottom of a rock pool. On opening the container she finds it filled with various little trinkets and a notebook for her to sign. That is the last we hear of Geocaching throughout the movie and, like most other things in US comedy movies, it went right out of my mind. Then, the other day, while sitting at lunch randomly browsing the net I remembered the scene in the movie and that she had said she ‘downloaded‘ the coordinates to her GPS.? Quickly I typed the word ‘Geocaching’ into Google and what do you know... over 5 million links… PAGE 45

WHAT? Impressive I thought and clicked the top link for ‘Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site’ and there I found a massively thriving community of treasure seekers from every possible point on the planet. Geocaching at its core is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with basic GPS devices, or more recently, mobile phones with a GPS apps installed. The basic idea being to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, has a strong sense of community and support for the environment through their ‘Cache In Trash Out’ environmental initiative.

It is reported that at any one time, worldwide, there is estimated to be over 1 MILLION geocaches eagerly awaiting discovery. Of course I immediately thought that we wouldn’t have anything like that here when a quick search on the site showed that Scotland has over 5000 registered caches with West Lothian having around 100 available with one a matter of 500 yards from my front door. The site has just about anything you need to know about Geocaching and links to everything you could need to get you started. COFFEE
T
he other weeks I purchased an espresso machine as I’d recently started drinking a rather large quantity of ‘real’ coffee as they say. I had found myself recently getting up on a Saturday or Sunday morning and making excuses to ‘pop out to the shops’ just so I could get my morning fix so I decided to try to cut out the middle man and plumped for a gleaming black and silver ‘insert brand name here’ espresso maker extraordinaire. It was only after setting the thing up that I realised that I hadn’t really got the foggiest idea how the cup of milky goodness that I’d been getting so used to in the morning was even made, or even what was really in it? After thinking better about visiting my local coffee shop and sweet talking the expert behind the counter into revealing all their Page 48
DiY
magical mystery I decided there was nothing for it but to turn to man’s new best friend… his trusty internet search engine. After a few hours of browsing through various mouth watering specialist coffee bean suppliers I found just what I was looking for. After a good time reading, and re-reading, and even a good few youtube vid’s I was eventually able to make something pretty close to what was used to picking up at my local coffee vendor. I have to say it’s pretty technical and there is actually a lot more to it that I imagined but I have to say it’s worth the effort. All need now is a recipe for chock chip muffins and those crunchy little Italian biscuits…
For those who, like me, need a little more help under standing what they are making in their new kitchen toys or just to let you know what’s actually in that cleverly designed paper cup of goodness that you pick up at the coffee shop here is what I found…. Normal “American coffee” is brewed by mixing the grounds of roasted JULY 2012 - issue (19)
coffee beans with hot water, allowing the mixture to steep briefly, and then straining out the coffee grounds. This is a pretty simple process. “Regular coffee” a cup of American coffee with a teaspoon of sugar, and a small amount of milk or cream mixed in. This has been streamlined through to our modern already ground spoonful from a jar, add water, milk, sugar. Or using a filtered coffee machine to brew pots of coffee.
Espresso can be made with the same coffee beans, and they can be roasted in the same way as for American coffee, although sometimes superior coffee blends - mostly Arabica - are used (because the resulting drink is more concentrated, and the flavour of inferior coffee will be harder to ignore), and sometimes darker roasts are used in espresso for a more intense flavour. But espresso can be made using the very same coffee and the very same roast. However for espresso, the coffee must be ground finer than what is necessary for American coffee.
Expresso Coffee
American Coffee (Americano)
This is because of the brewing technique. What makes the beverage an “espresso” is the special brewing technique. And the special brewing technique is why we require a special “espresso machine.” Although (arguably) espresso can be made in a pot on the stove, the result is inferior, and is not recommended. For espresso, the coffee grounds are compressed into a dense “puck” of coffee, and hot water (about 195-200 degrees Fahrenheit, but not boiling) is forced through the puck under high pressure (between 9 and 15 bars), to produce an extraction which we call “espresso.” The extraction should take at least 25 seconds (to allow sufficient time for the water to be in contact with the coffee), but it should not take more than 30 seconds. The grind needs to be fine enough to create a dense puck so that the pressure can be maintained during the extraction. An espresso machine maintains the water at the right temperature, and controls the pressure and the duration of the extraction. This cannot be accomplished on the stove. The resulting extraction, espresso, has a much more intense flavour than regular coffee. This is why espresso cups are tiny. The normal serving of espresso is about an ounce and a half - the same as a shot. A 2.5 ounce serving is called a double serving, or a doppio (which is Italian for “double”). Milk or cream is never poured into espresso (except when making other drinks, which are no longer called “espresso”), although espresso can be sweetened with sugar if desired.
Cappuccino
Latte
Typical Americano coffee is created by ading hot watter to the small 1/2 shot espresso. Cream, Sugar, Milk is added as desired. Cappuccino and Latte are drinks made with espresso and milk. The distinction is that in cappuccino, the
Mocha PAGE 49
JULY 2012 - issue (19)
milk is “frothed” (using the steam wand that is part of any espresso machine) into a “microfoam” that is about twice the volume of the original milk. In latte, the milk is merely “steamed” (heated, with the result being hot milk with a small head of froth) using the same steam wand, but a different technique. For frothing, the milk is converted to a “microfoam.” The microbubbles in the foam are formed by forcing hot air into the tightly-knit “fabric” created by the protein molecules in milk. So ironically, skim milk, being higher in protein, will produce a more voluminous foam than whole milk. For latte, the goal is not to create that much foam, so any type of milk works. For cappuccino, we start with equal portions of espresso and milk. The milk is then “frothed” (in a special frothing pitcher) into a microfoam that is roughly double the original volume of the milk. The microfoam is then poured over the espresso. (If the espresso is poured into the microfoam, then the drink is called a “latte macchiato.”) For latte, we start with twice as much milk as espresso. The milk is then heated (but not frothed) to 150-160 degrees Fahrenheit (but not hotter) using the steam wand. The hot milk and espresso are then poured together into a serving cup. Whatever microfoam had formed in the steaming process is poured over the top of the latte. Sometimes, the foam is poured artistically to create fancy designs on top of the drink. Caffé Mocha: same as others apart from a spoonful of hot chocolate is added to the cup before making the espresso. Mr Suit Coffee type info from

Everyone knows a healthy diet can help you sustain a longer life, prevent serious diseases and illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke. It may reduce the risk of developing cancer and preventing obesity. Finding the right food groups and know what is in them: •
• • •
Fruit and vegetables - contain many vital min erals and vitamins. For example vitamin C is found in oranges, lemons, kiwi etc. Vitamin B is found in carrots, potatoes, seeds. Bananas and pulses, seeds and nuts enriched with potassium. Magnesium - green leafy vegetables like spinach. Carbohydrates and starchy foods such as pota toes, bread, rice, pasta Milk and dairy foods - Vitamin D- calcium en riched known for healthy teeth and bones. Protein foods such as meat, fish, eggs and non-diary sources of protein including nuts, tofu, beans, pulses etc- important for energy, growth and muscles.
“About one third of your diet should be made up from starchy foods and about one third from fruit and vegetables. The remaining one third of your diet should be made up from milk and dairy foods and protein foods.” Page 50
Adding fruit and vegetables to your diet is quick and simple. Don’t be afraid to try new recipes, which include fruit, in desserts, fruit with yoghurt for example. Don’t forget fibre... Fibre is also needed in a balanced diet, it can be found in starchy foods and most fruit and vegetables contain them. It reduces constipation and can help to lower cholesterol levels. Avoid salty foods... Avoid too much intake of salt, instead try to use herbs and spices to flavor foods, select food labeled ‘no added salt’. Try to limit processed foods, takeaways and packet soups that are high in salt. Because too much salts increases your risks of developing high blood pressure. ‘We should have no more than 6 grams of salt a day’.

One other feature is the option of creating a fav channels list that appears in the Genre tabs on the home screen. To add a channel simply browse to the channel and press/ hold its name/icon and a pop up will appear asking you if you want to add it to your favs. To access your favs just go back to the home screen and click Favourites. I like this as it groups all your channels together that you watch and lets you scroll through them using Now & Next or Grid layouts so you don’t have as many channels that you perhaps don’t watch clogging your screen.
The Sky+ app is all part of Sky’s overall master plan for the mobile sector, Sky mobile general manager David Gibbs said “The success of the Sky+ app indicates that there is a real demand for innovative products such as Remote Record, it gives our customers more choice and control to plan their viewing over the TV they love when they are on the move and away from home”.

FRAGGER
TECH
f you like Angry Birds and want a slight change of scenery The Fragger Android Game is a similar ‘invisibly taxing’ game where you launch grenades at your enemies across hundreds of tricky levels. There are over 370 puzzling levels spread across 12 different worlds in Fragger. The aim of each level is, as you can probably guess, to eradicate all the enemy soldiers without running out of the ammo provided although there is the usual ultimate goal of getting 3 stars, sorry medals, in each level. Grenade tossing is a straight forward process aided by a large arrow to help fine tune the direction and distance of your throw. Move your finger around the screen to adjust your aim and then move toward/ away from your guy to set the strength. You can perform these actions from anywhere on your device’s screen so that your finger doesn’t obstruct your view. Graphics are good and the game has a pretty decent physics-engine that adds a lot to its long term playability. I like the fixed side bar menu as it allows me to pause or reset levels super quickly as they get increasingly more difficult or to obtain those elusive 3 medals on a level. If all else fails on a level the creators have added a feature to allow you to see the solution to the puzzle so you can then try it yourself. As a last resort there is also the option to skip a level so you don’t get too bogged down. It is worth noting that these options are limited and once you have used them all up you will either have to purchase more or earn them for free.

REVIEW
he original Alien really captured imaginations in the seventies, with its thennew brand of deep-space survival horror. A thinking man’s film it was not, but Alien nonetheless went on to raise a lot of questions. Why were the eggs on the ship? Who was the ‘Space Jockey’? Did Jones the cat inadvertently get enough people in trouble and/or killed to qualify as a Bond girl? These musings, however, were not intrinsically tied to a plot which was pure simplicity at its finest; rather, they were more the afterthoughts of lecturers, film critics, and many other people with too much time on their hands. Prometheus is marketed as an answer from the off, and that itself is the Petri dish from which the mould of disenchantment doth grow. Creationism, Darwinism, a giant thing in a big chair from a 70s B-movie: all these questions that mankind have pondered for so long are raised, referenced, and more or less forgotten. The promise of philosophy, of ‘Were we created by distant space travellers?’ and ‘Why do we exist?’ is answered by: ‘My muscles are bigger than yours, I crush your head’. With such issues left hanging for sequels to reveal, Prometheus is left feeling bland and empty. The cast of characters, for the most part, are a troop of fossilized archetypes – the nerd, the captain, the tough guy – save for the occasional glassy eyed heir to the plot twist (I’m looking at you, Theron). Praise be, then, for the excellent Michael Fassbender, salvaging what he can with hair dye, questionable scientific practices, and a basketball.

REVIEW
Outside of the crew, the atmosphere of the movie feels a little off kilter; Alien had gripping claustrophobia and a fear of the unknown; Aliens was an action-packed re-imagination that stayed true to the original; even Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection were films that happened. Prometheus, on the other hand, often plods and is more or less unthreatening. So vast is the foreign planet, so gaping are the halls and chambers they traverse that tension and fear have literally nowhere to hide – when you need a telescope to see the next corner, whatever may be lurking around it struggles to alarm.
buy into but the deeper narrative levels, that key existential stimuli promised us in the trailers is simply lost in space. While I’m sure Sir Ridley has a long term plan, a concept that could have stood alone becomes a prequel to a prequel to a prequel. Prometheus is the first squeeze from another franchise in Hollywood’s vault of sopping wet money towels. For extra revenue, just wring harder. REVIEW
I
t’s been a decade since the Men in Black sequel Men in Black II, hit the cinema and if I’m host I was pretty disappointed by that. In the 3rd instalment Will Smith, with the help of from Josh Brolin and writer-director Barry Sonnenfeld, may just have given us a pretty good addition to the franchise. Like most movies MiB3 of course isn’t nearly as good as the original, the main concept isn’t fresh and interesting and we already know the main characters. It does however have enough enjoyable moments Page 70
and includes a very ice hat tip / homage to Tommy Lee Jones’ with the younger version of the gruff MiB Agent K being excellently played by Brolin, to stand up on its own as a pretty decent and successful sequel. Utilising the new idea if time travel in the new movie Boris the Animal (Jermaine Clement), who is still holding a grudge against Agent K for hacking off his arm when they originally captured him in 1969. Boris manages to escape from his maximum security prison on the moon, and with revenge on his mind uses time travel to run amok on planet earth and also Agent J’s life (Will Smith). On his travels Boris has already bumped off Agent K back in 1969 and the significance JULY 2012 - issue (19)
of this is ominous unless Agent J can perhaps go back in time and attempt to stop him. We’ve seen time travel used in numerous movies so nothing special here and it’s hard to surprise us with anything really good. What MIB3 does is have Brolin who truly makes it work by pulling off in unbelievable incarnation of a young Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K in his youth. We have all the usual witty banter you have come to love and expect from the teaming of Agents J & K. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the movie is however the emotional component that has been added to the J & K relationship. Couple that with typically stylish special effects and a enough aliens creations to keep most fans content. Notably one Lady Gaga joins the illustrious team of real-life figures used in the movie and portrayed as aliens who are ‘outed’ by the Agents (Elvis, Dennis Rodman in previous movies) We already know what Smith can do in this franchise so the kudos really has to go to Brolin who for me pretty much steals the show with his fresh take on Agent K. Thumbs up to both Bill Hader as Andy Warhol (an MiB undercover agent who is overly annoyed that the public can’t tell that his “art” is a joke) and Boardwalk Empire regular Michael Stuhlbarg as Griffin, an alien who kinda sees how the future pans out. They also play nice roles that all add up to a really enjoyable watch for those who like not too serious comedy Sci-Fi flick. Defo one for a nice enjoyable summer afternoon. omedian Ricky Gervais donated £1,000 to a children’s hospital after losing a bet with British soccer pundit Gary Lineker on Twitter. The funny man took to the site on Thursday and dared Lineker to use a sporting cliché while he hosted the BBC’s coverage of the Czech Republic’s Euro 2012 game against Portugal.
The X, X-Factor judge and music mogul was captured with a dressing visible while driving in Los Angeles this month, and some cosmetic surgeons insist that it seems to bear the tell-tale signs of a cosmetic procedure.
The Office star stayed tuned to witness the presenter use the phrase during his live broadcast, and delighted Gervais agreed to make a donation to a children’s hospital in return, writing, “You did it! F
alling Skies is the work of acclaimed writer Robert Rodat, Saving Private Ryan, with Steven Spielberg as part of the executive producing team, although after watching its clear to say that Spielberg seems to have a lot more influence on the show than his lowly title suggests. He even penned the series title which was originally called ‘Concord’
Noah Wyle, of ER fame, hits our screens again as Tom Mason, a former college professor and father of three sons left without a mother after the alien invasion as seen in season 1. He, and his eldest son Hall have joined the fight against the invasion and Tom has become one of the lead figures for the 2nd Massachusetts civilian resistance group. Season 1 kicks off strangely after the alien invasion has taken place thus we see no actual invasion taking place. Rodat had written a beginning section detailing the occurrence but decided in the end that ‘I’ve seen this before. There’s no emotion to this’ and decided to begin the series after the initial impact of the attack. The season introduced us nicely to the motley band of characters and set the story Page 84
for the daily struggle that they face in not only just surviving and trying to bringing up a family with some sort of normality but also in their active battle against the aliens they lovingly call ‘Skitters’.... (is it only in Scotland that skitters mean something completely different?) Tom’s two other sons are Ben and Matt, the youngest. At the start of season one we see Ben captured by the aliens, who for some reason seem to be content to capture the young people of earth and enslave them using what seem to be living harnesses which burrow into the children’s backs and allow the alien race to control them. He is rescued and his harness successfully removed where so many others have failed, but throughout the season we are given glimpses that all is not quite OK with young Ben. The finale of Season One ended with Tom leaving his family and friends to board an alien spaceship after speaking to the alien race through a human girl. As agrees and boards the ship we see it fly off into the night sky. Perhaps Tom had trusted the aliens and by agreeing to a go with them he thought JULY 2012 - issue (19)
he could not only free his son Ben from the invaders’ power but he also hoped to get a better understanding of the aliens’ overall plan. As Season Two opens it has been three months since Tom disappeared willingly into one of the alien spaceships. He has not been seen or heard from during this time, and his absence has begun to taken its toll on the sons he left behind. Then, one night while out on routine patrol Ben takes down a skitter and in the process manages to shoot a shadowy figure behind the creature. As they approach Ben realises that the figure is his dad. Tom is back… but is it really Tom, where has he been, and what have the aliens done to him…!!!!! Falling Skies - Season Two hits FX for its UK premiere on Tuesday 3rd July at 9pm. Sky Channel 124 and Virgin Channel 157 or 158 for HD. We like Falling Skies and Mr Wyle in particular. TV&DVD BB 13
S
o BB kicked off at the start of the month and there have been 4 evictions since our wee special BB issue of the mag. We left you with the knowledge that on entering the house Deana was forced to nominate 3 people for eviction based on ‘First Impressions’. She nominated Conor, Lydia and Victoria. They now have only a few days to
convince the public to keep them using the ‘Vote to Save’ system again.
4 PAGE HE BIG BR/OT 2012 13 RUNDOWN
We were also hit with the bombshell that there was 3 wildcard picks who, although originally rejected by Big Brother selection committee, had been given another chance to impress. One of them would be chosen by us to go into the house immediately after Fridays 1st eviction. So what was this month’s highlights? Ok.. I’ll try to keep these short.... but don’t hold your breath.
Bong: Shievonne impersonates HM’s in order to win a party, Lydia wasn’t happy as being portrayed as a fame hungry wannabe.... yeh right.
Bong: Luke A decided to inform the HM’s about his gender swap. Born a woman and now, for the most part anyway, a man.
Bong: Lydia/Victoria relationship was over as Lydia makes wilted salad leftovers for Victoria’s lunch. Victoria announced that she wanted to leave the House. Never, never wish for something you don’t really want.
Bong: EVICTION 1 - Victoria was voted out of the House. Bong: Her space was quickly filled by wildcard winner Becky as she burst
through the diary room door, ran round the house screaming and eventually jumped fully clothed into the pool.
Bong: Becky was given a secret mission to win
immunity from Fridays eviction. She had to make sure she is named as at least 1 hm’s ‘favourite housemate’ – she picks Deana and spends all her time with her and successfully gets Deana to name her as her fav hm. BB Spills the beans and Deana is crushed to have been used so blatantly.
Bong: Arron steals extra sausage and gaves it to hungry doorman/bailiff Chris. Eagle-eyed Lydia and Deana spot the theft and all hell breaks loose.
Bong: Some hm’s discovered that they can talk openly about noms and quickly started to form wee groups to vote together in an attempt to stay in the house.
Bong: Adam openly announces to the whole house that they can discus noms. The Luke S and Conor gang’s heads physically drop as their masterplan crashes around them. Well done Adam.
Bong: Drunken Sara revealed a great affection for the Royal family, in particu-
lar the Queen for working at 80. And makes derogatory comment about other people in the country sitting at home sponging of the system…. Or words to that effect.
Bong: Sara and Caroline treat hm’s to an incredibly out of tune and incorrect rendition of the National Anthem.
Bong: NOMINATIONS - In first proper noms Chris and Arron are up for eviction. The wee doorman is crushed. Page 86

them has already stated that it was over and that there wasn’t any spark between them, then proceeded to fall back into each other’s arms the first time they see each other.
Bong: Lushleigh now they are talking about baby names???? Gees. Bong: SHOPPING TASK for next couple of days has hm’s attempting
not to laugh, smile, grin etc. Clowns in house smash pies into hm’s faces, comedian try to make them laugh and Arron is dressed comedy putfits throughout next 2 days.
Bong: Having won a luxury budget on the task the hm’s shopping has
arrived. A few key items are missing and BB reveals that they overspent a little… well when we say a little I mean £137. Can we have a recount of the O levels, Highers and Degree’s in that house please and no one seems to be able to count?
Bong: EVICTION 2 - Chris was ejected from the house. Bong: Hm’s have a Dance Off task. Dancers were paired against each
other with Lydia judging. Winners have party while losers bitch outside… always a staple BB tactic to split the house and introduce a little tension.
Bong: A bomb arrived in the house and hm’s were ordered to pass
it between themselves ‘pass the parcel style’ gaining either treats or punishments as each one took their turn to open a segment. Outcome? Benedict losing right to nominate, Conor wins karaoke evening with Arron and Adam forced to wear massive hands. Ashleigh wins a gym work out which she shares with guess who…. Luke S.
Bong: Arron’s pranks came to a head as he and Deana ended up in
a late night water fight. Instigated by Arron of course, Shievonne and Lydia’s bed end up drenched. Arron is adamant he hates Deana.
Bong: Benedict confronts Arron after he pretty much told the whole
house that Benedict was boring the previous night after they spent some time in conversation. Arron blames two, “sweaty stirring, housemates” for causing trouble by telling Benedict about his comments. Lydia and Deana, sitting beside Benedict, leap to each other’s defence resulting in yet another blazing row.
Bong: NOMINATIONS - 2nd round of noms result in Lauren and Benedict up for eviction this Friday. Surprised?
Bong: porn star Benedict upsets housemates by proudly declaring that he had pleasured himself in the shower.
Bong: SHOPPING TASK sees hm’s split into scientists and rats for test-
ing. Hm’s asked to pick the 3 most intelligent to be the scientists - Lydia, Benedict and Luke A are chosen. Now we have 2 days of lab testing to look forward to as the other housemates take on the roles of the rats.
Bong: It seems the ‘oldies’ and ‘floater’ groups (or the boring groups
to some) are banding together after realising that they will inevitably be picked off by the younger more dominant group.
Bong: Bong: Bong: Just as the hm’s begin using the ability to talk
about noms properly Big Brother announce that ALL nomination discussion is to stop and that it is no longer allowed. (At last…!!!)
Bong: Deana mentioned the word “period” twice at the dinner table, in playful conversation with Adam, and Lydia and Shievonne were appalled. Deana and Lydia are no longer bosom buddies. Gees… JULY 2012 - issue (19)

Bong: Less than four hours after BB announced that housemates
could no longer discuss nominations, Caroline and Conor openly talked about Becky being nominated every week and what they thought of her. In a style which the past couple of shows have missed dreadfully, BB gathered the hm’s on the sofas and read a transcript of their little talk. As a penalty the hm’s have been denied hot water. Benedict couldn’t help himself and slated Caroline for what she had said about Becky and her being generally pretty twofaced.
Bong: Arron fills the hairdryers with talc in the hope that when the power returns and someone uses them they will get showered with talc… bb didn’t agree and removed them all until further notice.
Bong: EVICTION 3 – Benedict gets the boot. Bong: A few of the housemates hear the usual ‘get so and so out’
chants and settle on Deana and Lydia’s names the ones chanted as Benedict left the House. No prizes for guessing who is up next week then.
Bong: Ashleigh gets not one but two parties for her 21st birthday. After sampling both for a while she is called to diary room and has to choose the best one, the other is shut down with guests inside forcing Shievonne, Luke A and Lauren to go to bed while the other party raves on.
Bong: Lydia is upset after BB calls hm’s to sofa and reads out rule break conversation between Ashleigh, Conor and Shievonne.
Bong: Hm’s get task where they have to choose a food from a
selection of tasty treats and some not so tasty. One they have picked their items to eat BB shatters their plans by explaining that the foods are perhaps not what they seem. Hm’s square off as some hm’s are targeted as not trying and not part of the team –Deana bears the brunt and is blamed for them not getting an imaginary prize if they all ate their selected food. There was no mention of any prize from BB apart from the overall prize for the individual winner who won the right to do the shopping on their own… some prize.
Bong: Lydia claims to have overheard Conor saying to Arron, “You
know what to do,” on his way to the Diary Room. Lauren is confident this is classed as influencing noms and Deana wants to complain to BB.
Bong: NOMINATIONS - Deana and Lydia are up next for the public vote.
Bong: GROUPS - Shievonne, Ashleigh, Luke S, Caroline, Scott,
Becky, Sara, Arron and Conor now called ‘The Insiders’. Luke A, Adam, Lydia, and Deana are ‘The Outsiders’. Lauren – is a floater, but is clearly being used and abused by Insiders but is sio desperate to be wanted that she continually ‘floats’ back to them.
Bong: Conor makes really tasteless sexual remarks about Deana Page 88

and threatens physical violence towards her to other members of the Insiders. BB steps in and warns Conor about his aggressive behaviour.
Bong: SHOPPING TASK revealed – hm’s have to score 100 balls/
points on various tests over the course of the next 2 days. Scales of Sacrifice sees hm’s give up a chosen weight of personal belongings – they chose way over the required weight but win the test. Smokers also lose their ciggies as Arron cuts them up and wins another test and more points. Room of Temptation sees Lauren refuse time with her sister, Luke A a phonecall with his wife and Luke S a video of all his noms so far…. They all give up their treats in order to keep the teams points. Lydia and Deana soak various hm’s in fishy water in order to guess who nominated them this week, gaining point for correct guesses and losing points for wrong ones.
Bong: Adam is a drill sergeant in a task to get the hm’s to clean the house.

o Danny Trejo stars in a film based on a YouTube video... Wait, what? Danny Trejo is starring in a film based on a bloody YouTube clip. What the hell happened. Machete was good, he used a guys intestines as a rope and now he’s starring in a film based on a bloody YouTube clip... Good Grief. And now for the words I never thought I’d say, this film is bloody awesome. I mean you have to first get over the fact that Trejo is playing a character who’s an old man. But since the guy was born in 1944 he is an old man. I couldn’t believe it either but according to any internet site I can find Danny Trejo is 68. The guy is a beast. Anyway, he beats the crap out of some idiots on a bus and becomes a local celebrity. Which is pretty much where the true story YouTube clip thingy ends. After that one of his friends get’s done in by some gang members and he then decides to go out and beat the crap out of everyone for revenge, Huzzah. So basically Danny Trejo does what Danny Trejo does best. He gets to beat people up whilst wearing a bum bag. So if you like watching Danny Trejo beat the hell

eing a comic book fan there’s nothing worse than seeing a lazy ass comic book adaptation. What the hell is the point of getting a property as awesome as Ghost Rider and then ruining it by getting Nic Cage. I know he’s a fan of comics but it only makes me think he should bloody know better. Don’t get me wrong the first film was about as much fun as having your penis scraped across a cheese grater but since the directors of Crank were behind this I thought it was worth a watch. My eyes... They bleed. Okay it may actually not be that bad, and it’s miles better than the first one, but there is still no excuse for how bad this film is. It basically follows the story of the devils forces trying to get a hold of an annoying kid and Nic Cage trying to save him with a monk (Idris Elba) whilst wrestling with the whole being Ghost Rider thing. I would love to go on about any redeeming qualities this film may have but they are shadowed by a horrible ‘I’m a crazy man on the edge’ performance by Nic Cage. I may be the only person who remembers a time when you’d actually pick up a Nic Cage film and expect it to be good but we are a dying breed. So this is a plea to Nic Cage, please stop making crap films. Never make another comic book films, we know you’re a fan boy but you seem to have lost JULY 2012 - issue (19)

love a good sports movie and although I really couldn’t give a rat’s ass about ice hockey I seem to have a great love for films made about it. Slap Shot, Youngblood, hell even the Cutting Edge... That counts right??? Sean William Scott seems to have struggled to get away from the shadow of Stifler even though he rarely puts in a shabby performance and yet again he delivers. This is the rather amusing story of a club doorman who gets hired by a hockey team to be their Goon. That’s the guy who goes out there to beat the crap out of the other team, huzzah. There are no Mighty Ducks in sight as he beats his way through the league whilst getting it on with the drummer from Sex Bob-omb. Don’t get me wrong there’s more to this film than just being funny and violent but surely those are good enough reasons to pick it up. Fighting and a good laugh. Get me to the DVD store woman, and while you’re at it, buy me booze. I have a hankerin’ for ice hockey related comedy and violence. James McCulloch for GoGuide Magazine Movie on DVD Contributer

’m a fan of Soderberg, there’s very little he’s been involved with I haven’t enjoyed so when I heard he was making a film with MMA fighter Gina Carano in the lead role I was trepidatious to say the least. Other than watching her fight I’d only ever seen her do a brief cameo in the outstanding Blood and Bone, so I knew she could fight but could she act well enough to carry a film. It’s a lot to ask when you consider the outstanding back up cast. The quick answer to this is yes. I mean she has a really weird face when she runs and she is a little emotionless, but that fits in well with the character, and she looks like she could beat the crap out of anyone. When she’s fighting Fassbender, you really don’t think he has a chance in hell. Her transitions and movement are outstanding. She makes a far more believable kick ass heroine than bendy arms Jolie or Beckinsale. Not since the days of Cynthia Rothrock have we seen an American woman kick ass in a film to such a believable level. The film itself could easily be a generic bournesque afterthought but Soderberg manages to do his usual play with time to drag you into the film and allow the JULY 2012 - issue (19)

arlier whilst reviewing Haywire (in this very issue) I mentioned the outstanding Blood and Bone. It rather got me in the mood to watch it again, and since some of you may have walked past it in the shop 20 times I thought I’d tell you some reasons why you should buy it. So the film stars Black Dynamite himself Michael Jai White, the man who’s been slowly releasing some of the best martial arts films to hit the stores over the last few years. When he’s not starring in those awful Tyler Perry films that is. In this one he plays a man recently released from Jail who starts kicking ass in the underground MMA scene. He has a goal which you find out midway through but it’s not really that important to be honest. I mean it’s nothing we haven’t seen done by Jean Claude Van Damme or Steven Seagal. Julian Sands even makes an appearance as the big bad guy, in a big house surrounded by guards…. Awesome. JULY 2012 - issue (19)
The film features cameos from a host of MMA fighters, from Kimbo Slice to Bob Sapp, the rather attractive Gina Carano get’s to kick some ass in it too. Which is probably the main reason the fight scenes in this film are so good. I literally jumped off my chair at one point. The film is one fight scene, closely followed by another, then a montage, then another big fight scene. Screw Rocky shouting Adrian I wanna see Michael Jai White being all mysterious then kicking the crap out of people. If you like 80’s action films, the kind that had Bolo Yeung looking like a big crazy bastich flaring his nostrils then you will love this. You can find it for under a fiver too. Bargain. Later on it was confirmed by another video that Mike Tyson is returning to ring, virtually that is, and will be available to play via pre-

With the game focusing on the events of the Attitude Era in WWE 13 with ‘Live the Revolution!’ as its slogan, wrestling fans (mainly people who watched wrestling back when it was amazing) will know that Mike Tyson played an important part to the Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. McMahon saga and becoming a member of DX, so it’s only fitting that Mike Tyson becoming a playable character in WWE 13. Xbox Live Achievements May Begin Rewarding You with Microsoft Points
X
-Box fans might be in luck as X-box Live Rewards releases exiting announcement via twitter. According to the official Twitter of Xbox Live Rewards, there’s a program coming in the fall that will win you Rewards based on your Achievements. Xbox Live Rewards, as it stands right now, is essentially a cash-back rewards system, not unlike a credit card’s rewards points, built into the live experience. Gamers get rewards for renewing their Gold membership, playing in various promotions, and offering feedback to Microsoft about the user experience. It’s optional, although joining the service is free. There’s little information about what tying Rewards to Achievements would actually entail. Microsoft could go the direct route and put Points in your account for certain achievements or unlocking specific Achievements could automatically enrol you into a contest. We’ll update you as it gets closer to autumn and the program debuts. Sammy S for GoGuide Magazine Games Review and News Contributer

t’s been 9 nine years since Rockstar presented us with a new instalment to the Max Payne series and it’s safe to say they have not let us down with Max Payne 3. Now you can begin to love diving in slow motion everywhere to kill your enemies once again in the game that made ‘bullet time’ as big as it is today. Max Payne has always had a diverse
and dark story line, Max still is haunted by the past, of his wife and child being murdered, and falls into isolation with the help of hard booze and popping pills. In the third outing Max finds work as a private bodyguard to wealthy individual Rodrigo Blanco and it’s not long before events unfold and Rodrigo’s wife is kidnapped and Max Payne is sent to get her. extremely detailed environment. Graphics wise, they’re not flawless but good enough to really make it more immersive. The gameplay is still as gruesome and violent as before, if not even more gruesome, with the help kill cams to end a fight. The Bullet Time is now more refined and is still fun to use, it is also more reliable now as gunfights are a lot more hectic and bloody but still exceptionally satisfying. When most single player based games come out and announce that they now have a multiplayer function I am mostly sceptic about them. PAGE 99

Max Payne 3 is one of these games that has introduced a multiplayer function and showed that sometimes they can make a decent job of it. Playing online is fun, bullet time actually manages to integrate itself very well in multiplayer, so when you’re finished with the roughly 12 hour long campaign mode you can start having just as much fun online. What is probably the most fun multiplayer game would be the Gang Wars, based around a mixed narrative and gunfights you’ll be defusing bombs and assassinating leaders. Max Payne 3 is another fine addition by Rockstar with an endless and great storyline and just a really sophisticated and easy gameplay. Even with the change of environment it still feels exactly like the original Max Payne games, and definitely one of the best games out this year and a great competitor for the other major titles to be released later on in 2012. he Ghost Recon series have always been exceptionally well panned out and chalked full of the latest and modern military technology. With ‘Future Soldier’ the game focuses on futuristic weapons and equipment that will undoubtedly will change warfare. Page 102
I am disappointed though that the redesigned the gameplay from the demo shown way back at E3 2010 as the game really appears to be watered down, drastically as back then the game seemed more futuristic and dynamic, with immense unmanned robots and able to shoot pilots inside their helicopters, it is disappointing. To get all the bad things out the way first, the graphics are not the best, they look unfinished, unpolished and can be really noticeable at times especially things up close, although JULY 2012 - issue (19)
there are times were it can look great but altogether the visuals are not as good as it could of been or should of been. Gameplay wise it’s almost flawless, with a perfect balance between stealth and action. The A.I though do seem to have no idea on what they’re doing, to many times have I seen the enemy instead of trying to flank me they will run into the open and straight at me instead. getting themselves stuck while proned, not bothering to heal me even though I’m right next to them, being able to keep camouflaged while running and the enemy not being able to spot them even though they run straight past them even straight into them (I know they were camouflaged it’s not perfect). Anyway the combat is great, having to sprint cover to cover, the camera panning down and shaking whenever someone lays fire upon you. You can take the sneaking route by marking targets and setting up your squad to take down a group of enemies all at once, this can be done via normal visuals or using your drone, which will become your new favourite toy to play with very quickly. Your camouflage will be your tool to sneak past or up on your enemies, it can only be activated by crouching and kept on only by moving while crouched or proned. To go in guns blazing is acceptable on some levels or at certain stages of a level but is still is as fun as sneaking about You also get the chance to use the destructive War Hound to help you take out enemies. The game also has the best weapon customization system to date with over 1000 weapon customization parts to help you play a level the way you want. Weapons range from assault rifles to shotguns all customizable all the way down to the gas chamber. You can even test your weapon in the firing range before starting a level. The game does have replayability with
Page 104

each level having challenges relating to the level that allow you to unlock new weapons and customizable parts. The games gorilla mode is basically a 50 round survival mode with up to 5 maps to play by yourself or online. What’s different to other survivals is at the beginning you have to secure the map before the survival begins. As you progress you will begin to unlock new and improved weapons along with equipment such as sensors, grenades and claymores. Online play is pretty challenging and fun with up to 4 different gameplay modes including standard deathmatch and choosing classes then levelling them up to unlock new weapons and parts. Future Soldier is throughout is fantastic and explosive from beginning to end with always being entertaining, sadly with a few bugs and visuals letting it down slightly it snot as good as it should be but it is still one great game to play. niper Elite v2 is one of a kind WWII sniping game, with the new X-ray kill cam, similar to the x-ray cam in Mortal Kombat, sniping is now more skull shattering, lung puncturing and testicle popping fun. The events of Sniper Elite v2 takes place after the first game, still based in the concluding years of WWII. What you basically do is get a very short briefing before a mission, shrewdly make your way to the target (or in my case guns blazing my way towards the target as I was not very good at being stealthy in this game) and snipe your target as gruesomely as possible. As you probably have guessed this is a sniper game, sniping is what makes the game flourishes, when it comes to up and close gun fights the game starts to show some flaws. cover and respawning in areas that have just been cleared (I hate A.I spawning). So the game really relies on careful planning of your course action, setting traps, stealth and timing your shots. Even though the game can lead to using your machine gun, you will really get the rewarding factor from the X-ray kill cams, this only happens with special shots but can happen to any enemy, as you watch the bullet leave your Springfield travelling across the battlefield and ultimately hit your target and watch the internal damage take place. This probably is the selling point of the game as its oddly satisfying watching you shoot some Nazi testicles or shattering every bone the human Page 108
anatomy. With every sniping game you do need the wind element there to make things more realistic. The graphics are pretty decent, not the best out there but pretty good though the environment really helps make the game more immersive, everything is rundown and typically destroyed with debris falling of buildings. Online can fun yet challenging especially Bombing Run and Overwatch. Bombing run requires you to recover parts before a bombing run flattens the area. Overwatch requires one player to play the sniper and the other to sneak about planting bombs though I do pity whoever ends up having to sneak about while JULY 2012 - issue (19)
the racks up all the kills. Also you can play through the main campaign with a friend to change the gameplay. Sniper Elite v2 is one challenging game, sniping to the core but really uses stealth as a way of taking out a group of enemies rather than sneak past a group of people though you can throw a rock to send an enemy away to investigate. It is fun though and extremely tempting just to start sniping enemies to start shattering as much bones as you can. Sammy S for GoGuide Magazine Games Review and News Contributer

eservoir Dogs is a 1992 crime film marking the debut of director and writer Quentin Tarantino. It depicts the events before and after a botched diamond heist, but not the heist itself. Reservoir Dogs stars an ensemble cast: Harvey Keitel, Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn, and Lawrence Tierney. Tarantino has a minor role, as does criminal-turned-author Eddie Bunker. It incorporates many themes that have become Tarantino’s hallmarks: violent crime, pop culture references, profuse profanity, and a nonlinear storyline. The film has become a classic of independent film and a cult hit.It was named “Greatest Independent Film of all Time” by Empire. Reservoir Dogs was generally well received, and the cast was praised by many critics. Although it was never given much promotion upon release, the film was a modest success in the United States by grossing $2,832,029, which made its $1.2 million budget back. The film was more successful in the United Kingdom, grossing nearly £6.5 million, and it achieved higher popularity after the success of Tarantino’s next directorial effort, Pulp Fiction. A soundtrack titled Reservoir Dogs: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was released Page 126 songs used in the film, mostly from the JULY featuring 1970s. 2012 - issue (19)
