Who are GOGUIDE...???

We take a look back at some classic movie posters.

We try to ensure our information is correct before uploading but some details are subject to change. PLEASE check online or with each location directly for fully up to date information.

GUIDE is a local online magazine for the West Lothian area. We are trying to be less focused on local ‘news’ and more a, ‘what’s or ‘happening’ guide to the local area. At the moment we are heavily focused on the whats going on in the local music scene, ats on and good @ the movies and what is happening in the world of PC/Console gaming.

“....they think they’re so clever.....” The Clash / Garageland

I

come from an era where vinyl was king and when you purchased an album back then it was something to treasure. For those that perhaps don’t have a clue what I’m on about l’ll quickly try to explain. A vinyl ‘album’ or ‘LP’ or ‘Record’ was a thing that a band would put all their songs on and sell to you, basically the CD of its day. Unlike CD’s though, they weren’t smooth and shiny and didn’t last for over. Records were pressed pieces of 12” plastic with tiny grooves in them that made the magic happen. Vinyl needed a record player for you to play them on, record players had an arm with a stylus/needle attached to it that when placed on the record it would run along the groves and music would happen. Well, I called it music but my parents and siblings called it a racket!!! Anyway, if you played a record often enough, it would get worn out. Both the record and the needle world be worn out over time and sometimes, when desperate, you would use coins to weigh the needle down so it dug in deeper into the groves just because you couldn’t afford a new needle.....

stop listening to and it was I of only 2 records that i bought twice, ‘Damned Damned Damned’ got smashed so needed replaced but The Clash’s’ first album was quite frankly worn through and not even £2 of loose change Sellotaped to the arm could help get those awesome opening bars of ‘Janie Jones’ to play on my hand-me-down Decca record player. So needless to say there was nothing to it but to invest in my second copy of the record. I’m still not sure if CD’s have the same magic as records? but that’s another story for another time.

b e c a f . w w w

So basically a record was pretty easily damaged back then and if you got a SCRATCH in one it was like the end of the world.

So to say that I was a Clash fan would be or understatement, well to be honest I’m an early Clash fan to be truthful.... the more reggae side of things I never really got.

But I digress.... to get to the point there was one album that i absolutely couldn’t

Being too young at the time i never actually got to see the guys in their

heyday but once had the privilege of bringing one of the county’s finest Clash tribute bonds to Livingston about 7 years back, this brings me eventually to the actual subject matter of this feature and that is the Clash Livi Rockers Clash Livi Rockers describe themselves as not actually a Clash ‘tribute’ band though and more of a punk covers band doing a full set of dash songs instead.

“We met when we were at school” The Clash / Stay Free ...we really did though! The CLR repertoire ranges from staple Clash covers like Should set, ranging from the Clash standards like White Riot, Complete Control etc. to lesser played tracks like 1977 and Protex Blue.

enjoys themselves just as much as the band does. There are a good few YouTube clips out there to allow you to get a good feel for just how good these guys are at what they do and how good one of their shows actually is. Playing covers Isn’t always about playing note perfect renditions of the artists songs, maybe more so with punk covers than any other music out there. There was so much energy, passion and commitment oozing from most punk songs that sometimes all it takes is to get that feeling right and everything else just clicks into place. CLR don’t really fall into the above... as they not only play as close to perfect Clash songs as you will hear anywhere but somehow manage to capture a good deal of the energy and passion that Strummer, Jones , Headon and Simonon threw in our faces back in 1977.... In fact CLR go a long way to dragging ‘77 kicking and screaming into the 21‘st century. Chrissyboy does a really admirable job filling the Strummer role backed up with top-notch lead work and backing vocals by Marcus and the rock solid backline of JD and Tigger driving the songs along at perfect pace and power to allow that awesome Clash sound to shine through. CLASH LIVI ROCKERS CHITCHAT GG: How hard was it to come up with CCR: Not too difficult to be honest. We wanted people to know what they your name? What names did you reject? were getting just by hearing the name. A band from West Lothian doing Clash covers. The tongue is firmly in the cheek but we still rejected a few. ”Lanthorn Calling” and ”White man in Bathgate Palais” springs to mind ha ha. Think it was Marcus (guitarist) who came up with Clash Livi Rockers. GG: How long have you been a band?

CCR: Been gigging for 5 years - but been doing this for a about 18 months now. It started as side project of our covers band ”Mall:Function” really, but it grew arms and legs and we do this full-time now. We are all huge Clash fans so it was an easy decision to make.

GG: Who are the members, what do they do in the band and how did you all meet?

CCR: Chrissyboy - lead vocals and guitar, Marcus - lead guitar and backing vox, JD - bass and backing vox and Tigger on drums. Chrissyboy and JD were at school together. They met Tigger and Marcus through moving in similar gigging circles etc

GG: Do you play in any other bands ?

CCR: Chrissyboy plays guitar for Jock Sparra (Cock Sparra tribute) and Marcus and Tigger turn out for The Mad Frogs when they are gigging. Tigger also plays for The Pumpin Jehosafatz and We’re not Iguanas - being a drummer he’s in demand. Says his heart is with us though (bet he says that to all the others haha!) JD is 100% a Clash Livi Rocker though.

GG: How do you chose your set list ?

CCR: Depends on where we’re playing and who we’re playing to. But we try to do all The Clash favourites you’d expect, as well as some pleasant surprises. We were doing two 45 min sets in PJ Molloys in Dunfermline last month, and there’s so many songs to choose from we over ran ha ha! We also did a gig once where folk just shouted out songs and we just did them, but after that we tended to stick to a defined set list!

GG: Do you try to add your own wee twist to any of the songs?

CCR: We go for as close to the original versions as we can get. A lot of The Clash stuff on record is heavily produced and overdubbed and sometimes it’s not possible to replicate that on stage so we will watch (or listen to) live footage and cover that version - like ”Clampdown” for example. Sometimes there’s a wee twist where needed, our version of Police & Thieves is slightly shorter than the 6 minute original.

GG: What is your favorite song to play ? Is it different LIVE?

CCR: Think as a band we all really enjoy doing ”Complete Control” but really anything that gets a good reaction, feeds back to the band. We have folk/mates join us on stage to sing along or jump around or whatever, and thats usually to the ones you’d imagine - ”Fought the Law”, ”White Riot” etc. We played Beat Generator in Dundee in December and the stage was like Live Aid at the end ha ha

GG: Is there any songs you find you can’t CCR: Some are easier than others, the first album is straight forward quite get right? Do you have any you enough but as The Clash evolved the songs got more complex. But we like don’t like to do? to test ourselves. We’re working on ”All the young Punks” just now. There’s a fair bit to that one. GG: Where has your best show been?

CCR: Tough one. We had a wee run there where we played Dundee, Edinburgh, Paisley and Dunfermline all pretty close to each other and that was a good wee run coz each gig felt better that the last. A hometown gig is good fun too, so we always like doing Livingston/Bathgate shows.

GG: Have you ever met the people you cover ?

CCR: Not met in person but yeah we’ve all seen The Clash in concert at some point (not together). Tigger gets extra points as he saw them on the busking tour in St James centre. Guess we’ll have to go one better and do MAR 2013 (26) afternoon! Almondvale one- issue Saturday

ould i be going too far if i was to say that these guys are one of the best, If not THE best tribute bands that I have ever heard? Maybe, but you really need to see and hear them to get what im talking about so when I say you need to make time to see them, I really do mean it ...!!! Lizzie and the Banshees are a tribute to Siouxsie and the Banshees that were formed quite recently in 2012.

Lizzie aka Siouxsie Sioux is an impressive front woman and pulls off not only the voice of the Queen of Punk but also a pretty sweet capturing of her stage antics as well. Guitarist Alex does a stunning job of mastering the Banshees guitar feel and sound, mainly the John McKay/ John McGeoch era and Mark and Ian on bass and drums round off the overall sound amazingly. Head over to the guys website for a nice wee taster compilation video from a recent show at The Dreadnought where you can sample all your favourite Siouxsie classics like Israel, Hong Kong Gardens, Christine, Spellbound and a whole

lot more.... actually a really nice sample video of what to expect at a live show from the band. All together LATB do an amazing job of pulling everything together as one and capturing the Banshees heart and soul. Its a hard choice between seeing the real thing or Lizzie if you ask me and I can pretty much guarantee you won't be disappointed If you decide to chose our local offering over their Bromley counterparts... If, in some bizarre world, you ever had that choice to make. Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine

Lizzie and the Banshees

www.facebook.com/LizzieAndTheBanshees GG: How hard was it to come up with your name? What names did you reject?

LATB: It was pretty easy as it was the first name we thought of. We wanted a name that was immediately recognisable to Siouxsie and the Banshees.

GG: How long have you been a band?

LATB: We've all been in various bands since our teens, doing original material. It's only the past five years or so we have ventured down the covers/tribute route. Up until this band, Lizzie always played drums, so singing up front is a new experience.

GG: Who are the members, what do they do in the band and how did you all meet?

LATB: Lizzie - lead vocals. Mark - bass. Alex - guitar. Ian - drums. Lizzie, Mark and Alex have all played in bands together, off and on for years. We met Ian only recently upon starting the Banshees band.

GG: Do you play in any other bands ?

LATB: Mark and Lizzie still play in Cash from Chaos, a punk covers band.

GG: How do you chose your set list ?

LATB: Obviously, we go for the most well known tracks, ie the singles. But we also do various album tracks. Studying previous Siouxsie and the Banshees gigs set lists helps.

GG: Do you try to add your own wee twist to any of the songs?

LATB: We always try to get the songs as close as possible to the originals. I think people expect that from a tribute to one band.

GG: What is your favorite song to play ? Is it different LIVE?

LATB: Israel is always a good song to do, Cascade and Painted Bird also.

GG: Is there any songs you find you can't quite get right? Do you have any you don't like to do?

LATB: No we enjoy playing all the songs in the set, some more than others.

GG: Where has your best show been? GG: Have you ever met the people you cover ?

LATB: Dreadnought Rock, Bathgate, our first gig. But looking forward to the upcoming shows. All details at www.lizzie-and-the-banshees.com LATB: Not in this band but in Cash from Chaos we have met a lot of people from the bands we cover, ie Stiff Little Fingers, the Damned, the PAGE 11 MAR 2013 - issue (26) Rezillos, UK Subs, to name a few.

The

tereo in Glasgow isn’t my favourite place to see a band, so when I roll up to the door it has to be for a pretty special band. I’m here to see one of the newest and hottest bands around, The Virginmarys... but more to catch up with my favourite West Lothian rock band ‘The Black Lights’. We kinda arrived a wee bit later than expected but still in time to catch a good bit of the first band of the nights set. ‘Siphon’ are an able 4 piece that quite frankly don’t sound anything like they look, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it just surprised me and sort of knocked me off kilter. What you get with Siphon is pure rock ‘N’ roll.... if you like your rock that way then Siphon won’t disappoint. Next up are The Black Lights. If you like classic rock with a kinda street feel, and if you haven’t seen these guys before, then you really need Page 14

to get along to see them as soon as you can, you definitely will not be disappointed. For as long as i can remember The Black Lights have been a five piece band that served up a wall of sound full of passion, energy, ferocity and more importantly a big chunk of FUN thrown in for good measure. They don’t seem to take themselves too seriously and look as if they have an amazing time onstage which shines through in the performance they put on. I’d actually go as far as to say that they probably have a deep rooted vein of Punk running through them somewhere. In not sure who it is coming from but it’s definitely in there somewhere. Due to a recent change in line up we now see a slimmed down 4 piece band take to the small Stereo stage tonight after the recent departure of second guitarist Cameron Arndt. This is only the second time the guys have played with just James McCulloch on Vocals, Steve Nicol on Guitar & Vocals, Tony Riccio on Bass & Vocals and Stu Penketh on the Drums. Having seen the guys a few times already I’m not sure exactly how MAR 2013 - issue (26)

this is going to go down.... I’m nervous for them... I shouldn’t be, but I am....! From the opening 30 seconds of set opener Heartbreaker It’s pretty plain to hear that the band have never sounded better, the songs sound more open, they breath more and there is now more space for everyone to find their own space. They are clearer, brighter but at the same time more powerful and have a more cutting edge to them. Steve’s guitar work now sounds amazing and we now get to the chance to hear just how talented a player he actually is. The sole responsibility for that area of the band has fallen into his lap and he steps up and kicks it squarely in the family jewels. The backline of any band are the ones that tend to get the raw deal when it comes to reviews as it can sometimes be difficult to sum up just what is so good about what they do. The Black Lights backline of Stu and Tony seem to effortlessly throw out this wall of low end goodness and driving rhythm’s that you just can’t help but find yourself

head bopping and jiggling along to, it also lays down the perfect foundation for now lone axe man Steve to work his magic on. Throw in a trademark power stance via Mr Tony Riccio and there is really only one thing missing!!!!.... oh wait .... here he comes now .... Like a semi demented, grown up, ‘Monkey’ (checkout ‘Monkey 1970’s TV Series’ online if that goes over your head), front man James fills whatever space is left onstage and then some. He’s a tall and imposing dude but that just means you get more ‘bang for your buck’ in almost everything he does, or maybe it’s everything he does? I really wouldn’t know that ;-)... JM is what you want in a front man. He immediately engages the crowd and from then on James and Steve’s witty onstage banter have the crowd eating out of their hands. He nonchalantly powers through every song with ease using a vocal that fits the music perfectly. Structure wise the songs are simple classic rock tunes and lyrically they tell it like it

is with simple, no frills, uncensored, beer fuelled rock tales sung from the gut in a manner that doesn’t take any prisoners. Throw in a couple of amigos’ by your side powering in with a few simple shouty sing along chorus’s when needed and you have just created a recipe for a tasty box of rock ‘n’ roll dough nuts that you won’t mind waiting 25 mins in a queue for .... Krispy Crème… my ar** ... Black Lights for the win. .. !!! The Virginmarys are one of the up and coming UK rock bands who seem to be aiming to capture more of a pure rock sound than a lot of the ‘Indie’ rock bands doing the rounds recently. In the way that maybe The Fratellis or The Enemy have done but with a good few others thrown in for good measure, namely Foo Fighters’esque vocals. They are good at what they do, have a lot of influences hanging unashamedly from their sleeves and l can defo see bigger and better things from them in the near future and I will be checking out the guys again hopefully at another venue.

pring is almost upon us and its around about now that the minds of those music lovers among us begin to wander to ‘Festival Season’ and of spending sunny, and sometimes muddy, days sitting in fields and tents around the country listening to some of the music we love and drinking lukewarm lager and junkfood all day. So with that in mind GoGuide brings you a sneek peek at some of the lineup announcements so far from the country’s biggest summer music festivals. Page 18

that among the stars of the show will be none other than 80’s legends Deacon Blue, having celebrated their 25th anniversary last year these real gone kids will be making their first appearance at the festival when they take to the main stage. Some other Scot’s acts on the bill for the 20th festival at Balado are crowd favourites The Proclaimers and The Fratellis, indie’s latest darlings Twin Atlantic, The View and Frightened Rabbit, along with soul singer Emeli Sande, and up and coming stars Nina Nesbitt and Glasgow electropop band Chvrches. SHOW REVIEW

here seems to have been a massive increase in Facebook pages offering fantastic prizes for giving their page a LIKE and SHARING their posts. That's not necessarily strange in itself as there are lots of genuine pages out there actually giving away free stuff on their websites and through social media pages.

E L A S OR

F

There are however a lot of sites that have specifically been setup with the sole purpose of pulling as much traffic to it as quickly as possible and for less than obvious reasons, so beware which sites you LIKE, Share or give your personal details to. We checked out one FB page in particular who were offering free APPLE products to people who LIKED their page and SHARED a particular post. The page had only been opened for 1 months and had nearly 9000 LIKES – most of which had come in the last 2 weeks of its life, 8500 likes in 2 weeks? Stunning marketing I’d say…. who does theirs? There are a few companies out there that would be interested in that kind of ‘real’ traffic to their site. The problem for me is that this page wasn’t a business page, or an official fan page and the details of the people running it were vague and they didn’t actually give any worthwhile info at all, there was no email address and no external web site attached to the page like most business, fan or other promotional pages would have. The page hasn’t even been completely registered as a ‘presence’ on Facebook yet, meaning it still has the option to change its name and web address to something else. But still almost 9000 people couldn’t be wrong right?

Facebook Page, 1 owner, Unregistered, 10,000+ targeted LIKES, Wanna buy it?

S

WE CANNY SHOW YOU THIS FOR OBVIOUS REASON

On checking it seemed that, from the half dozen posts on the site, every one of them was for a prize ‘Giveaway’ as they call them. No other posts, just Giveaways. For me something just doesn’t ring true here? The little ‘About’ info section for the page advises that these ‘Giveaways’ are from a group Page 36

sive so out !!!

of advertisers who give the prizes to the page, but no company, store or advertising names appear anywhere on any of the posts, banners or info. Now if my company was giving up multiple $5000 Macbooks as prizes I would make damn sure my name was all over the site/post otherwise what is my company getting from the process? Now I know that some people will be thinking ‘who cares’ it’s just a Like or a Share, ‘I’m not handing over money or anything’ and you would be right. The only thing that you are doing is adding yet another page to your LIKE list/newsfeed and then sharing it on to your friends…. No harm done. Well that is correct and you can always just unlike it if you don’t win anything. But why? What does this page, or the person running it have to gain from this? Giving all this stuff away for nothing??? Reasons: Option 1: if we look at the really dark side of the internet we know that there are people out there trying desperately to get hold of your personal/bank/online details yeh, so we all know not to do that online, don’t we? So let’s rule that out. If you did go to a page telling you you’d won something and asked you for various details we would say NO right!!!! The most they need is your postal address to send you your prize and leave it at that. Option 2: the person is rich or has secret sponsors, and just wants to give stuff away FREE… that’s great and nice to see and at some point in the future I’m presuming we will see lots of pictures and posts from happy FB users with their nice new toys, we will wait and see? Option 3: It’s a JOKE…. ok from a quick look, and I know it’s only been a month, but none of the people who have been mentioned in the posts as having WON the items have actually received any contact from

the page admins or anyone else. So maybe it’s just a ‘prank’ page that someone is having a laugh with. No real harm done I suppose apart from people getting their hopes up that they not only have a chance to win something but that they actually have, and then get nothing… not really funny for those people. Option 4: One thing we haven’t looked at so far is the very REAL process of selling Facebook Fan/ Company/Organisation pages and ‘Blast’ post advertising. Now, we ourselves run our own Facebook page and know first-hand exactly how difficult it is to build even a small amount of LIKES on a fan/company page. Sure, Pubs/ Clubs etc. can offer tickets or special offers for their likes, business’ can offer discounts etc. but even with those benefits it is still a really long process to develop a large quantity of LIKES to a page, It takes a very long time to do it the proper way. So a company would potentially pay a small fortune for say a Facebook page with a targeted group of people who have already pre LIKED the page and are semi interested in your product? Let’s say it has 20,000+ likes already and is ready for you to brand and change to your company’s name? For people who don’t know… A Facebook Fan/Company/ Organisation page is very different to the ‘profile‘ page that a typical person would have, you can’t really interact with other Facebook users in the same way. You can’t friend anyone, or comment on status updates, message people, share stuff, tag photos etc. You really have to pay for Facebooks advertising or run third party advertising outside Facebook in an attempt to drive traffic to your page. How can that be done?? How can a company buy a page that I’ve MAR 2013 - issue (26)

already liked when it wasn’t that when I liked it? Well… it’s pretty easy, we won’t go into the actual details of how it can be done and Facebook has made it more difficult with each new update but it does happen and it is good for people to be aware that there are these things happening on such a large social networking site. We checked out a couple of pages on Facebook and found that the latest trend seems to be anything Apple, iPhone, Mac related, PS4 Xbox 720 or any other big tech that is about to be released or has recently been released. Looks out for pages offering stuff for free if you LIKE and SHARES their page/ photo/status like say WIN A FREE MACBOOK if you share and like our page. One page actually had a photo post saying this ‘…5000 Samsung Galaxy S4 to 5000 Lucky Fans for FREE…’, and this is even before the GS4 phone is released to the public. I for one can guarantee there is a good chance you won’t get one of these phones for love nor money in the first 6 months of its release… BUT… a wee Facebook page is giving 5000 of them away for free???? Well… not quite… a bit more digging actually gets you to the nitty gritty of the ‘Giveaway’ but we don’t want to bog you down with the technicalities of any cheap looking web site that states ‘…just for completing a short offer from our sponsors…’ we all know about those sites don’t we? So let’s face it there is little chance that any APPLE products are being ‘given away’ as part of any promotions other than those from very, very reputable sites or companies so beware. Sometimes offers can even come in the most round about ways as well. Tonight in my news feed I picked up a share from one of our readers regarding PS4 Testers? So I checked out the page, which was named very similarly to a very reputable PAGE 37

LIFE(STYLE) FEATURE

S

WE CANNY SHOW YOU THIS FOR OBVIOUS REASON

Fake PS4 testers wanted page. Opened with 1 post only ‘PS4 Testers Wanted’ within hours the page had over 25,000 likes. Days later Sony had to release a press release advising of these FAKE pages and warning people that were calling what these pages were doing ‘FRAUD’

online presence to do with Sony’s official online gaming pages, they basically added a ‘period’, yep a full stop at the end, which makes it appear exactly like the original… yeh I know. I found that what was on offer for my LIKE and SHARE was a nice wee job testing the hottest and most anticipated console on the planet… the Sony Playstation 4, as if that wasn’t enough I would actually be allowed to KEEP the console on completion of my testing. Me… little old me, a PS4 Tester plus my very own console to keep for FREE…. I’m a WINNER…!!!!! Come on… really? We fall for that? Amazingly, when I first hit the page it was only 1 hour old… yes… I know…. I’m laughing out loud as I type. The page had 3000 of those all-important LIKES when I looked, and remember, all of these from people interested in owning and testing the new PS4… so all pretty keen gamers yes? You see where I’m coming from here? So who would be interested in buying a page with 1000’s of likes from people interested in Playstations??? Probably a lot more than you imagine… Turns out that Sony issued a press statement a couple of days later Page 38

pointing out that this was a hoax and should be treated as FRAUD, well needless to say that Facebook have acted in their usual swift manner to tackle fraudsters on their network. Page so far is stil online minus the ‘testers’ post but replaced with a new ‘free giveaway PS4’ if you like/share their page (which also breaks FB fundamental rules) Now sure, Facebook have placed a lot of new restrictions on business and fan accounts over the past few years and it is now a lot harder to do a simple ‘sell’ on a Facebook Fan page due to these type of pages having to be ‘Officially’ attached to the business or body that they relate to now. So to comply with this rule people are now turning to other methods and using other types of pages which do NOT need to be officially anything to do with what they are promoting. There are also a lot more people doing this for marketing reasons and using pages for advertising, trawling, traffic driving, selling ‘blast, posts and lots of other online jiggery pokery and most are way above my head but ‘Blast’ posting is where a popular site with lots of likes/ shares/comments will sell ‘status updates’ on their page to other business therefore a lot more ‘junk’ status updates in your new feed that MAR 2013 - issue (26)

you are potentially not interested in. A rule of thumb that always rings true here is ‘If it sounds too good to be true, it IS too good to be true’ regardless of the reasoning behind it. These scams are happening and happening today so be careful what your sharing as you probably won’t get what’s on offer or worse will be sucked into something you really didn’t want to be. Facebook will tell you that this doesn’t happen but just search online and you will find lots of private forums where the ‘trading’ of pages or updates happens in plain sight. Hopefully this article will help you realise that not everyone online has their friend’s best interests at heart. So beware…!!!

TOO HOT TO HANDLE

S

ince I was a kid mum always told me that I had to eat what she put in front of me even though I might not have liked it as it 'wouldn't kill me'.

Now having grown up a wee bit and now eating pretty much anything that is put in front at me I've realised that she was pretty much on the mark. Apart from a few dangerous fishes etc. we can eat almost anything without It doing any harm to our amazing bodies. There was even a time where I was into eating the hottest foods I could find from curries to pizza it always had to be hot hot hot.... The hottest peppers have even been used as tests on TV shows for a while from Big Brother to Man v's Food, The hotter they were the better on those occasions, but remember what Mum always said, no matter what it was it 'wouldn't kill me'. Page 40

Now it appears that might not be the case anymore after a number of cases reported in China of people being rushed to hospital after a restaurant's mala hot pot soup had apparently 'burned a hole in his stomach'. According to Asian specialist web news site Rocketnews24, the 26-year-old man had no previous history of gastrointestinal disorders before the incident. It is reported that the young man entered the Wuhan, China restaurant and ordered the spiciest soup on the menu. He was then rushed to the emergency room after he started vomiting blood and suffering severe pains in his stomach. Wuhan hospital has found recently that 15 percept of its gastrointestinal cases have been caused by hot pot-related incidents. Don’t panic though as spicy food in itself should not be unable to MAR 2013 - issue (26)

actually burn a hole in your stomach lining and although spicy food can theoretically kill you there are various body functions that kick in as a reaction to the changes like inflammation, heart burn, and pain should that would stop a person from eating enough of anyone item to kill themselves. It has been found in most of these cases in China that the cause is most likely accidents involving levels of cheap synthetic seasonings contained within restaurants Hotpot dishes instead of real Sichuan peppers for heat. Wow.... back to that super-hot curry for me then ... Hottest things to stick in your dishes that hopefully won't kill you....

Naga Jolokia Chili via www.gardener.wikia

Known as the Dominican Devil’s Tongue Pepper, this fiery food is specially bred to be bigger and hotter than any of its habanero relatives. Prohibited for distribution by the Plant Variety Protection Act, Red Savinas will practically singe your taste buds with one single bite.

Naga Jolokia Chili Grown in certain parts of India, the Naga Jolokia is perhaps the only counterpart to the Red Savina. These orange and red peppers are so freakin’ hot, just one seed from the Naga Jolokia can cause immense pain for up to 30 minutes. By comparison, that makes your genital rash feel like it’s on an ice block!

Indian Tezpur Pepper A relative of the Naga Jolokia, this Indian-based pepper is so spicy; it’ll compel you to become a professional fire breather in the traveling circus. Big, juicy and plump, the Indian Tezpur is deceiving in appearance, fooling many into thinking it’s a mild cooking pepper used in traditional Indian fare.

Hot Pepper @ thehotpepper.com

Red Savina Habanero

Found mainly in the Caribbean, the Scotch Bonnet is so hot, it actually burns your skin just to touch it. Its uses are mainly as a chief ingredient in hot sauces and Caribbean or Jamaican jerk sauces, but some daredevils venture to eat the Scotch Bonnet fresh (and whole). One taste of its seed, however, and they’ll find themselves in the ICU ward of their local hospital.

Jamaican Hot Pepper Used often as a small ingredient in many Jamaican staples, from entrees to sweet treats (no, we’re not joking), the Jamaican Hot Pepper adds a humongous degree of heat to any dish. Of course, leave it to the Jamaicans to spice up everything from Sunday dinner to a simple cup of hot chocolate. Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine

game that has been taking the Smartphone and tablet word by storm is not one with fancy graphics or slick gameplay or even a cool or funny looking central charter. There's no programmed physics engine mimicking the real word and no tie in to a famous brand name, movie or console game.

For the most part ward tying the pics together either jumps out at you right away, makes you Sit and think for a few minutes or makes you tear your hear out until you get It right, phone a friend, post online for your friends to help or get on the google bandwagon just to keep your sanity.

So... what makes this game so different and engaging ? Simple really, kick the game up and you are presented with 4 Pictures and jumble of letters which are an anagram of a word that Is is tied to the above pics. Easy.... and what world you call a game like that ? Well strangely the programmers, after months of brainstorming I’m guessing, stuck with '4 Pics 1 Word'.

We're done with the latest update and sitting on 447 so there is plenty of fun for someone just starting the game. The best method we found of getting help when stuck was to take a wee screenshot and upload it to your Facebook or Twitter page (There is even a button on the latest version that lets you post the level page your having trouble with straight to FB) There will then surely be a good few comments with the right answer. I prefer the ones that try to push you in the right direction as apposed to those who simply give you the word outright.

The Game is laid out sensibly, looks good, and does what its supposed to do with not much for me to really grumble about or to wax lyrical about. Page 48

The game is constantly updated and over our testing period I think there was about 4. Each update changes things slightly, fixes any bugs that have been found but more to the point they also add more levels to the game.

4 Pics 1 Word is one of those games that you can play while MAR 2013 - issue (26)

The Furry Little Monster

T

upsu - The Furry Little Monster is another game in the new breed of 'beautiful' looking games that rely on stunningly simple and colourful graphics coupled with a super realistic physics engine to pull of the feel of the game in much the same way as World of Goo did. The premise is simple in that you only need to guide your character around each level collecting stars and eventually making it to a black hole that will suck you in signalling the completion of that level. Your character , I'm presuming called Tupsu, Is a furry wee alien ball with tentacle eye(s) that can stretch and stick to parts of its surroundings. This is what you use to get you around the level by stretching your tentacle eye and sticking it to your side, above or below you. The elasticity engine will then pull you to that position and the process

begins again. On occasions you will need to use other elements of your surroundings in order to complete the level such as boxes and 'gravity reverse switches' The game is basically split into three main worlds, each having their own set of challenges and bizarreness about them. As the game moves on levels and newer stages become increasingly more difficult making you think just that little bit harder and on occasions repeating wee bits ohhr and oven until you feel like ripping your hair out. Starting off with one tentacle your wee friend will eventually grow more giving you more options for getting around but levels only getting harder for you to complete. A couple of neat futures In the game is the ability to run it in both SD and HD for those with the screen and CPU power to enjoy the HD experience. The second feature is the 'view' button which kinda lets you FREEZE play and you can then scroll around the screen checking out the path you need to take to complete the level, when you think you have it worked out just press the button again and try it out, MAR 2013 - issue (26)

With excellent graphics, cool sounds and simple but addictive gameplay Tupsu Is a wee gem of a game. It is available FREE with NO annoying adverts to get in the way just a gaming experience that will keep you coming back for more until you complete it, which i haven't managed to do yet so back to the weird and wonderful world of furry little monsters.

rench App studio Presselite have reacted angriIy to a block that Facebook have placed on their Vintage Camera app. The app basically offers users a collection of filters which can be applied to their images taken with Apple phones and tablets. The app developers have Inferred that Facebook has unjustly banned their users from uploading photos that have been altered using the app to their social network pages. Much like other filter based apps, Vintage Camera, gives its users a collection of effects fohws to place over their photos making them look old, faded, scratched or as if they were taken by an assortment of lowfi cameras. Developers Presselite say they have more than eight million people worldwide using their app. Facebook responded by by telling

the developers that their decision had been made following negative feedback from a number of account holders. Presselight appealed against the ban and Facebook emailed the company back saying: "We've checked out the circumstances of your app's restriction, and we found that your app received strong negative feedback from users and their friends. Unfortunately, we will not be able to restore your app's functionality." Presselite co-founder Antoine

MAR 2013 - issue (26)

Morcos has insisted that Information gleamed from data provided by Facebook themselves shows that there has been something like one negative report for every 1,000 images that are shared via their app. He believed these had been down to "inappropriate use". "We don't understand how Facebook could block the access to millions of users of the Vintage Camera application who want to share their photos on Facebook,

only because of a few negative feedback reports," Mr Morcos wrote in a press statement. "As you all know, Facebook has acquired the Instagram photosharing application, and we hope this acquisition is not influencing this kind of access limitation for other photo applications." Facebook clarified that Presselite had already received warnings about the app before it was eventually blocked. They stressed "While we provide an open platform, every application on Platform is required to meet our policies. We take both automated and manual steps to detect

violations and ensure compliance," "Pending on the violation, we give developers an opportunity to come into compliance via a warning system. In the case of this application, the application was not in compliance with our platform policies and had received three warnings prior to our systems taking action on the application." Oddly the app was sitting with a four-star rating on the Apple store, but like most apps there are the odd comments regarding parts or all of the app not working, some bizarrely even complain that it is actually too similar to Facebooks Instagram program. MAR 2013 - issue (26)

The history of

GROUP FITNESS Group fitness has come a long way since the first commercial ‘Health Clubs’ opened their doors in the early 80’s. Women wanted to look like Jaime Lee Curtis in ‘Perfect’ (Google it if you don’t know what I’m talking about), and there was a rash of dancey/fitness type movies on in the cinema. High Impact Aerobics and step classes were sprouting up in gym halls, community centres and church halls. Going to the gym, and surviving these hour long aerobic or step classes, was a very fashionable thing to be seen to be doing. Over the years, two approaches to leading group fitness classes developed. Sometimes, instructors taught the same class for years with a successful following. Other instructors always reinvented their classes with a more creative, constantly changing approach. The first technique is now called “canned,” “blueprinted,” or “prechoreographed” programming, such as the immensely successful Les Mills Body Training Systems which exist in clubs around the world. The second approach has evolved, also

quite successfully, to fusion fitness. An advantage of the first is how members appreciate the predictability of format and intensity. An advantage of the second is how members look forward to change. Things have evolved a lot since those first fitness classes. Today we see not only shorter classes, but we also find more of an emphasis on flexibility, use of equipment, the crucial role of music, and hybrid classes that fuse different types of disciplines. Hour-long classes have been condensed into ½ hour or 45 minute classes at higher intensity. So members get the same results (or better if you read the research) in a shorter amount of time. Sports Science and research is involved in all aspects of fitness and health now, so that the workouts people do, tend to target specific goals such as strength, endurance, and flexibility.

Why Group Fitness? There are lots of reasons why people attend group fitness classes rather than follow a programme in the MAR 2013 - issue (26)

gym. There is very much the social aspect and camaraderie as you work out side by side with the person next to you. People get to know each other and form friendships out with the gym. There is motivation; you just can’t stop when everyone else seems to be managing ok around you! Recent published research studies continue to show the importance of changing training modes to maximise benefits. Because research published by Len Kravitz and others on the principles of “Sustained Adaptations to Imposed Demands” (S.A.I.D.) and “General Adaptation Syndrome” (G.A.S.), we know that, the more we train in the same mode in the same way at the same intensity, the less our body will continue to respond because the body’s systems become highly efficient at adaptation to change (Block and Kravitz). Instructors and trainers also know that participants often get bored with sixty minutes of the same repeated class activity extended over a long calendar period. Shorter, more intense classes target a variety of things like strength, balance, stability, core strength, agility, endurance and more. PAGE 57

Group F itness

Here at Fit Inc. classes are mainly short and intense. Classes such as S.T.A.R.T circuits before going to work in the morning, Street Gym, H.I.I.T & Indoor Cycling are all guaranteed to give you a complete workout, make you sweat and make you feel you have really worked! There are still some old favourites such as Body Pump and Body Balance for the fans.

Some Pros & Cons of group fitness

Pros Motivation: A group exercise instructor will push you harder than you would probably work yourself. An element of competition with other class members means you will not give up, no matter how much it hurts! Time: Classes can easily be fitted into lunch times, before or after work. Technique: A good instructor will ensure you carry out the exercises safely and correctly. Progression: In some classes the instructor will suggest progression methods for regular members

Cons Times: Classes are usually on early morning and evenings. These times don’t always suit people. Expense: Paying for classes can be expensive unless part of a gym membership Works Referenced: Block, P. & Kravitz, L. NO THANKS...!!!

W

ith Hugh Jackman Speaking out on his decision to not take on the Iconic role of James Bond this month GoGuide thought it would be nice to look at the other actors who have taken the decision to distance themselves from the one they call Bond, James Bond. Jackman was apparently approached around 2005, just before Daniel Craig took the role, he chose to turn down the role due to other commitments and to concentrate on developing his X-Men character Wolverine. In 2011 Jackman told the Press Association "I got a call from my agent saying, 'There's some possible interest in you for Bond, are you interested?' Page 68

At the time, I wasn't. I was about to shoot X-Men 2 and Wolverine had become this thing in my life. But I think every male at some point thinks about playing Bond. So it was not right then, but it may be right if it comes back." Recently he has elaborated on the situation and potentially started laying the ground work for a possible take over when Craig steps down, which is thought to be after another two movies. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter Jackman talked about how he feared that it would potentially damaged his career. "I thought it would box me in too much, my natural instinct is to keep as many doors open as possible." Despite those feelings a few years back it seems that he has mellowed to the idea and stated at the end of 2012 that he would now be up for the challenge. MAR 2013 - issue (26)

"I will just wait. The thing about Daniel [Craig] is that he's, what, 62 now, isn't he? He's falling apart at the seams," Jackman joked, "So I just keep telling him, 'I'm ready, whenever you want to let him go'. The good thing is I also have a British passport." So that got us to wondering here at GoGuide as to exactly who else had turned down the suit wearing, martini drinking spy? Here is some of those who refused the role:

REFUSED

ROLE

1959, 1961 and 68 - Richard Burton... declined the role as it was an untested role initially then due to not being paid enough. 1961 - Cary Grant passed on the chance as he thought he was too old at the time.

Top left row: Liam Neeson, Richard Burton, Patrick McGoohan & Rod Taylor

1961 - James Mason was offered a 3 movie deal but would only agree to do 2 so tuned it down. 1961 - Patrick McGoohan thought the rote was too promiscuous. 1961 - Rod Taylor (The Birds) thought the role was below him. 1970 - Had a few US candidates who ruled themselves out on the grounds that Bond should be British. Among those were Burt Reynolds (Smokey and the Bandit, Boogie Nights) Adam West (TV Batman) and Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby) 1970 - Michael Gambon (Harry Potter Dumbledore)

Bottom to Top: Mel Gibson, James Mason, Dougray Scott, Ewan McGregor, Clive Owen & Clint Eastwood

Bottom to Top: Christian Bale, Christopher Lambert, Cary Grant, Burt Reynolds & Adam West

1994 - Liam Neeson strangely not interested in starring in action movies... WTF...????

MAR 2013 - issue (26)

2005 - Hugh Jackman for plot direction and work commitments. 2005 - Ewan McGregor didn't want to be type cast.

REJECTED ROLE

Some actors that were REJECTED as possible bonds Include:

1983 - Lewis Collins (TV The Professionals) was too aggressive. 1987 - Mel Gibson - for being American 1987 - Christopher Lambert - for being French 2005 - Clive Owen - contract stuff 2005 - Dougray Scott - Unknown 2010 - Christian Bale - Daniel Craig returned. I'm not particularly a Bond fan but for me I'd prefer Jackman to Craig any day of the week, come to that I'd prefer a few of those listed above to a few of other bonds as well. So lets see what the future brings and if any other skeletons pop out of the 'I said No to Bond!' closet. Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine Movie & DVD Reviewer PAGE 69

REVIEW

THIS IS 40

H

aving created a few awkward movies over his young career writer/ director Judd Apatow has turned his hand to what you could maybe say is his most 'close to home' pieces of work yet with new movie This Is 40. The movie is a comedy that takes a look at married life when a couple reach their 40th birthdays. In a move that we have seen before from Apatow, he fills the cast with his own family starting win his real life wife Leslie Mann, as he reprising both hers and Paul Rudd's characters from his previous movie "Knocked Up". Not only is Mrs Apatow utilised but the director also ropes in his young kids to take up their previous roles from that movie also.

Page 72

So with the idea of plucking the supporting couple from Knocked Up, and setting the story on a good few years into their marriage, he see Pete (Judd) and Debbie (Mann) now happy and comfortable with their lives. Well actually their marriage has turned into a routine where they are basically going though the motions and ploding through their various duties day after day. They are trying to please everyone from their kids to their parents and taking care of all the usual stuff like careers and their health. One thing they seem to neglect though is each other. Their relationship is somehow forgotten from their huge list of things to focus on. The obvious results occur and as you look closer things begin to become serious with underlying resentments filtering through the cracks that are starting to show through their 'happy couple' persona that everyone around them sees. It's a comedy, but definitely with a large dose of dark reality thrown in MAR 2013 - issue (26)

far good measure ... The film kicks off with Pete and Debbie having sex seen through the opaque glass door of their shower, strangely things quickly turn to a pretty funny Viagra discussion which we won't spoil for you, needless to say it sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Everyone in this story seems to be wrapped up in their own wee worlds complete with their own addictions and hang ups. Mom just wants another 2 years, she's not 40, she's 38 until she can move on. Dad can't stop eating cupcakes and, oldest daughter Sadie lives life online and can't bear to be without her iPad and is addicted to Lost and youngest daughter Charlotte just wants to WATCH Lost.... This Is 40 is has an inherent dark flavour to it and a bitterness to it that does make you think at times, It's also super funny for those that have been through the minefield that is marriage or being in that 30+ age bracket perhaps a little more

than the average younger cinema goer. Each of the small issues addressed by the film's story have probably been experienced by a large percentage of people but it's the chosen solutions to those problems that bring the comic moments. One of the funniest being the scene where Debbie and Pete confront the mother of the young boy who's been harassing their daughter on a well known social media website. Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) is briefly awesome as the boy's mother, tossing obsonlties out like confetti In what is probably one of the more obviously straight forward comedy moments. At Its heart the movie is an honest story of married life, kids, tact, parents and aging. The characters are played convincingly by actors who realise that they are not necessarily there to be liked and Apatow's direction here has helped capture that fine balance. For me a super funny movie that is well worth popping along to see.

ruce Willis (The Sixth Sense, RED) is back as John McClane – something we never thought would happen after the release of Die Hard 4.0 in 2007 but then maybe we all needed one last McClane adventure although this one I found a little disappointing. The Die Hard films are probably my all time favourite action films ever and so you can imagine my excitement when I saw the advert for the new one. This time they were going to Moscow and that I found slightly amusing if not predictable. The original Die Hard films were based upon some kind of hostage situation within a confined location where McClane was the only cop available. With the release of Die Hard 4.0 this style changed slightly and McClane is simple a cop with a vengeance and is released into the wide world to wreak havoc. This one is exactly the same. McClane heads to Moscow to break his Page 76

son, Jack (Jai Courtney, Jack Reacher), out of jail but actually causes more problems. Despite the disappointing storyline, the humour was definitely there. Typical McClane with his witty quips. I found myself chuckling along at Willis’ one liners and the chemistry with his son was the perfect set up for comedy. By all means I would recommend this film simply to complete the Die Hard collection but to rate it as a film I would say it isn’t really worth the time. The film obviously shows the difficulties they had in thinking up another storyline which simply tells me that maybe they should have just left it. I would definitely watch it again only because I love action films but it will never rank up against any of the other Die Hard films that’s for sure, although I did thoroughly enjoy the idea of his daughter being involved in Die Hard 4.0 and then this one simply led on from that to involve his son that we’ve already heard mentioned in one of the other films. o be honest, I wasn’t too sure what to expect with this film. The adverts looked amazing but everyone knows that adverts can be misleading so I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. I was not disappointed. Jeremy Renner (Avengers Assemble, The Bourne Legacy) and Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, Clash of the Titans) are the legendary Hansel and Gretel but there’s a twist. The classic fairytale always tells of Hansel and Gretel’s escape from the witch with the gingerbread house but it doesn’t tell the story of what happens afterwards and that’s where this film comes in. We meet Hansel and Gretel years later when they’re all grown up, and I must admit their entrance scene is brilliant – it definitely made me laugh – and now they’re witch hunters. This sounds cheesy, I know, but it works. My only criticism is some dodgy special effects when the witches are flying but then again not every film is perfect and this one is certainly one of the better ones. The storyline is interesting. IT’s something that I definitely wasn’t expecting and it really works. I won’t give it away because I seriously recommend this film to anyone who loved Mirror Mirror or Snow White and the Huntsman because essentially what we have here is another version of a rewrite. But surprisingly this rewrite is so original it’s got to stand out in that DVD collection of yours. Imagine my surprise when I saw an advert only yesterday for Jack the Giant Slayer which is a retelling of ‘Jack and the Page 80

Beanstalk’. Watching this film made me jealous simply because I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of something like this before, or that anyone else had for that matter. The other gem that emerged from this film was the use of actors that I hadn’t heard of before. This discovering of new talent which will MAR 2013 - issue (26)

hopefully sky rocket Arterton and Renner to the top of their profession and gain them recognition in the future. Not only does this film have a good story line, it has fantastic humour, violence, swearing and nudity – pretty much everything that a good film needs. So if it’s too cold to spend the day outside, get yourself

allowing myself to succumb to the experience.

I have never been so utterly befuzzled by an adventure in some make believe time and place in all my life but I guess that’s the charm of this film. Unfortunately, I haven’t read the book, so I was relying on the craft and storytelling of the creators and to be honest, once I realised that this film was going to confuse me if I thought about it too much, I sat back and relaxed,

By the time the end of the film came around, I felt like I was given a lot to think about. This film does provide a lot to ponder. There is so much woven into it and I see why the book is so critically acclaimed but despite Natasha Orme for GoGuide Magazine all that it was something I was not Movie & DVD Reviewer expecting and for that I was grateful. There are too many films that provide a too predictable plot and ending but Cloud Atlas will keep you

I read online somewhere that this film is all about the consequences of people’s actions in the past, present and future and even after this gem of knowledge, I still wasn’t sure I understood the storyline. I could follow each individual story up until a point but I didn’t really understand them, not even at the very end.

guessing right up until the very end. If you want to watch something different then watch this. I’m not going to give you a report on each actor because they all performed stunningly. The costume and makeup was also incredible and so was the graphics and costume. I’ve given this film four stars out of five and if it wasn’t for the fact that I didn’t and still don’t really understand the connections then I would have given it five. THE

FIFTY SHADES The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy has globally sold over 40 million copies. In the first year of its release it had sold over 5.3 million copies in the UK alone, and that’s just book number one. The E.L. James novel was released in May 2011 and has become the bestselling book in history. It has even sold more copies than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It seems that ‘Fifty Shades of Grey is hotter than Harry Potter’. Taking this into account, it’s no surprise that the first book is due to be made into a film, but is this the right move? When the official announcement was made in October 2012 by Universal and Focus Features, fans went wild. Now the question is: who will play who? Fan polls have gone live online for the favourites to be voted and a list of the top running actresses has been compiled for the public to see, but that’s not all. Heated debates are taking place online and endless articles are being published solely on the upcoming Page 88

decision of who should play the role of Christian Grey. It seems that everyone wants to have their say on the matter.

Fifty Shades of Grey has apparently changed the lives of ordinary people. The Sun did an extensive article on four women and one of them stated: ‘I’d recommend that every woman read it and use it as a kind of sexual blueprint’. But it doesn’t just stop with these four women. It seems that the sexual freedom has taken the country by storm: ‘modern day women are embarking on a new sexual revolution and pop culture has proved to be on board for the wild ride’. So when I say the fan base is concerned about the lead role, what I really mean is that women are. The film seems to symbolise a new era for them. An era of less sexual objectivity, more sexual control and the fans want it to be done right. From reading the book to seeing it on the big screen, they want their vision of Anastasia Steele to be MAR 2013 - issue (26)

absolutely perfect.

The question that now stands is what affect will this have on the film industry? We are already seeing a revolutionisation of sex and the way it is being approached by women. Take music videos, for example. ‘Today’s music videos are like soft porn’ a source tells us and there is some truth in this statement. Artists such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga flaunt their bodies to promote their music. There are no age restrictions for raunchy music videos which means that they’re out there for everyone to see, including children. If this is what’s already out there then the Fifty Shades of Grey film could produce an even more rapid desensitisation of TV content which in turn could result to sex being a part of everyday children’s television. I’m not saying that it will but it is certainly a possibility. What we need to consider now is whether the film version of Fifty shades of Grey will simply become a glorified porn film (seeing as though the

Since Fifty Shades of Grey’s release, authors have pounced on the success and produced novels such as Bared to You (Sylvia Day) and also Anne Rice’s take on the classic fairy-tale of Sleeping Beauty. The whole publishing industry has leapt forwards to produce Fifty Shades ‘spin offs and genre crossovers’. The spin offs aren’t the only production of this ‘Fifty Shades of Grey Mania’ but there are countless parodies all over YouTube and spoof versions have even made their way into the eBook franchise on Amazon: Fifty Shades of Beige by Reid Mockery, Fifty Shades of Pink: A Parody by Faythe America, Filthy Shames of Lame by Ricky Sprague and Fifty shades of Twilight by Secret Anonymous are a few examples on the endless list! All that is left for us to do is to wait and see what happens. Will the film be a success and liberate the film industry or will it be the catalyst for an unstoppable chain of events? SPARTACUS The War is Nearly Over TV NEWS

F

eb saw the continuation of season 3 of the so far awesome Spartacus: War of the Damned, the American / Aussie production that chronicles the Story of slave turned Gladiator who rebels against his Dominus, and overtime raises an army of gladiators and slaves to overthrow the oppression of the Romans. Initially captured and separated from his wife way back in season 1, then becoming a Gladatorial Champion in Season 2, season 3 kicked off back at the end of 2012 with our slave hero Page 92

and the beginnings of his army breaking free from their bonds and roaming free, battling the Romans as they crossed the land. Now with the shows return from its mid-season break we have see the Spartacus led army taking their first major Roman City. The good news is that it’s pretty much move of the same and thing have picked up from where they left off with no let up of the shows unique action and bloodlust or Spartacus’ extensive ponchante for a bit of male/ female nudity and simulated sex scenes (and thats putting it nicely) So it was with a little bit of a saddened surprise then that I found out just this week that this season is actually going to be the last ever MAR 2013 - issue (26)

season. Especially after they decided to keep the program going after the passing of original Spartacus Andy Whitfield. Strange then that they only get a further 2 seasons from it just as the expansion of the show begins to open up. The news also seems a little carrying as it is widely known that season 3 of the show was commissioned just weeks before Season 2 stated airing so the future seemed bright for the show. Season successfully introduced the hand picked and endorsed Liam McIntyre in the new lead role, following Whitfield illness and untimely death between season 1 and 2. Creator Stephen S. DeKnight did have hopes of Spartacus running for a few more seasons but agreed that War of the Damned serving as the ultimate end for the show was probably better for the show late long run. Speaking with video game

and entertainment website IGN, DeKnight said: “This show has been challenged, to say the least, in many, many ways. We’ve faced many difficulties and tragedies on the show. My original plan was to attack the show in a five- to seven-season arc. Once we got into it and after Andy [Whitfield]’s passing and looking at the historical story of Spartacus, we came to the decision to basically end on a high note.” “We certainly could have continued for a few more seasons and stretched it out, but we really wanted to end high and not feel like we were treading water – and really just condense the rest of the history into one amazing tenepisode, badass final season. You know, the whole show was a huge risk from the start for Starz, and it was another huge risk when I decided to try to keep the show going after Andy’s passing. Any normal studio would have just cancelled the show at that point and not risk the financial downside of it not working. But Starz, thankfully, really stuck by the show, and they really wanted it to be told all the way to the end. They didn’t want to cheat the viewers and just suddenly pull the plug. So they gave us this opportunity to wrap up the story,

and we’re certainly taking that opportunity and running with it. This is by far the biggest season we’ve ever attempted.” The closing episodes of War of the Damned will take the epic, super cool action scenes that the series has become known for and will try to top even those and take things to a new level an together in an attempt to send the show of with a bang. With time now running out for DeKnight to tell this collosal story he intends to force thing along by bringing Spartacus face to face with one of his major adversaries in Marcus Crassus (Simon Merrells). In a recent interview the American magazine Entertainment Weekly, DeKnight said “The scope and scale [are] just amazing. We’re dealing with massive battles between thousands of people. We hope to leave people feel satisfied. Looking at the story in the history books, it’s wave after wave of Roman senators going after Spartacus who are defeated until [Roman general Marcus Crassus] comes in. There’s only so many battles you can put a spin on. So let’s pick out the most interesting moments in this struggle and lay out a clear narrative for Spartacus and his rebellion. I wanted to lay out a strong forward narrative with a strong antagonist.”“Crassus is MAR 2013 - issue (26)

kind of like the Roman boogieman we’ve been talking about for the last three seasons. We meet him in episode one and you totally get that this is a guy who — maybe he can’t equal Spartacus in a one-on-one fight, but he’s just as shrewd and smart and dangerous as Spartacus.” It is there for everyone to see that with Spartacus, despite large chunks of creative license, the main question was always going to be how far could it actually be taken with the knowledge that we all kinda know how it has to end and one that to a certain extent is constrained by the facts surrounding the story. DeKnight has mentioned that he thought there was still more entertainment to be had from the story but feels Starz, the US tv network who make the show, could be looking to freshen their programming. “I would much rather end a series with the audience wanting more than limping to the finish line, with only the die-hard fans sticking around for the wrap up. We want to make the 10 best episodes we can. I can’t wait for everybody to see it.” DeKnight stated. Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine Contributer PAGE 93

GAME OF THRONES’ SEASON 3 Premiere Date Announced for USA

MAR 2013 - issue (26)

T

he Game of Thrones wait looks to be almost over, the return of season 3 is on the horizon. HBO has at last revealed the Game of Thrones season 3 premiere date with a big fancy poster telling us it's going to be March 31, 2013. Lets not talk about the poster as It simply states the date 03.31.13. When Game of Thrones eventually does return for season 3 there will be additions aplenty as far as the cast is concerned with some notable additions to the already extended character list. One notable addition will be that of Orell, a wildling skinchanger set to be played by none other than The Office and Pirates of the Caribbean star,

Mackenzie Crook. Oroll features in the books but it is thought that he will probably be combined with another character from the story, Varamyr Sixskins, to make the character more fitting for the TV series. New additions will do see Diana Rigg as Olenna Tyrell, grandmother to Joffrey’s fiancé, Margaery Tyrell. Nicknamed the “Queen of Thorns,” Lady Olenna doesn't sutler fools gladly so It is going to be interesting to see how she handles my favourite evil boy king Joffrey Baratheon. There will also be odd appearances by pop band Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody and Coldplay drummer Will Champion. Their roles are as yet sketchy but Champion is rumoured to be, you've guessed it, playing a drummer, while the Lightbody role is thought to be “not pivotal” to the story line. Where Game of Thrones season 2 covered the second novel by George R. R. Martin, “A Clash of Kings,” in it's entirety the 10 episodes of

season 3 is thought to be covering only half of his third novel, “A Storm of Swords”. The second part of the book has been held back after produces decided to split the novel across season 3 and 4. A Storm of Swords, being a considerable story in its own right means that splitting it across two seasons would seems like the obvious option for the show daubed 'the most anticipated show of 2013' by TV fans. The book has so many interesting and engaging character elements that producers fed it would give them more time to spend on these parts which could help keep fans of the book series happy as they are patiently waiting and hoping that their favourite parts of the book makes it onto the big screen. ox in the US has announced its airing schedule for Gordon Ramsay’s 11th season of Hells Kitchen, which kicks off on the 12th March 2013. Ramsay created the show in the UK before taking it to the states in 2005 and has since sold the format worldwide, he is also the executive producer on the American show. From Fox’s recent trailer it looks like Ramsay will be carrying on from where he left off and doesn’t suffer fooIs gladly with what appears to be a rather bumbling mens team pitched against a rather strong collection of female competitors. I have always enjoyed Hells Kitchen, from the early days of the UK show, and the US version hasn’t Page 96

really dissapointed me too much either. In fact I kinda like how the US throw their weight behind their successful shows in a way that the UK companies don’t seem to do. Prize money this season sticks to the usual format and contestants stand to win a job with a $ 250,000 a year salary, or something of a similar standing should things not work out for them job wise like it did for season 7 winner Holli Ugalde. In 2010 Ugalde won the show and the position of head chef at Ramsay’s own Savoy Grill in London but after a time accepted a cash prize rather than accept a lesser position after Ramsay was apparently forced to hire a replacement chef due to Visa problems.... or something else dependant on where you read the story. Season 11 promises 20 brand new aspiring restaurateurs each attempting to endure the culinary challenges that the show presents to them each week. This years life-changing grand prize is a head chef position working MAR 2013 - issue (26)

alongside Executive Chef Jeremy Berlin at non other than chef Ramsay’s very own Pub & Grill site at Caesars Palace. New for this season is that the newest batch of contestants will head directly to Las Vegas to prepare their first dish cooked on the show and present their signature dishes in front of a live audience. Split into two teams they will each try to show Chef Ramsay, and the live audience, that they are the best and have what it takes to win Hell’s Kitchen . The winning team will earn a VIP night on the town with access to a special LIVE event. The losing team will resort to an 8 hour ride back to HK’s Los Angeles bootcamp on a sweaty school bus. Over the course of the season the chefs will be put through all manner of tests and as usual someone will be kicked out at the end of each episode until only two chefs remain to compete for the ultimate prize. T

he only 'Apprentice' show that I have ever watched has been the US Celebrity editions of the show, with maybe the odd UK Comic relief episodes throw in far good measure. Having been away for a good few months The Celebrity Apprentice is about to hit screens in the US this March with a special 'All-Star' season featuring host of returning stars from previous shows. Donald Trump spoke to reporters in the states with a couple of returning contestants La Toya Jackson and Bret Michaels. The trio told the waiting crowd about why the new show is potentially going to be so dramatic, of the conflicts we can expect and which contestant they daubed "brutal". Reporters kicked of by asking why they thought the time was right for an All-Stars season? Page 98

Donald: "Well, it just seemed good. We've had so many people that have done so well on the show they didn't win, but they did really well and they were really liked by the audience, because ultimately it is about being liked by the audience. We have Trace Adkins coming back, we have so many people that did so well and just really were liked. I have such respect for Bret going on the show and doing it, because he could have sat to my side and it wouldn't have been the same risk. But I think you'll see that Bret comes out amazingly. But there was so much like and love for some of these contestants that we wanted to do an All-Star version. Whether it's Gary Busey or Dennis Rodman, we have just some great people coming back." On why this bunch of celebs were chosen and not some of the others Mr Trump said. Donald: "They were all great. I've had very few that I could truly say and I have had some - that I did not think were good and we wouldn't have them back. But Holly Robinson Peete was great, Melissa had one of the great scenes in the history MAR 2013 - issue (26)

of the show when she went crazy over something and it was great television. But this was the group we wanted... You have a list of the people on the show and it's just been a chemistry thing, we wanted the right chemistry. You never know if it's going to work but we picked people and the chemistry really did work." Previous winner Bret was asked if he thought he world have any advantage having been a show winner ? Bret: "Here's the absolute truth - I actually felt like I had probably a major disadvantage. I call it the Super Bowl syndrome - when a team comes back that's won it everyone's gunning for them. But I loved everyone that was on it, and as a lifelong diabetic it's a great opportunity for charity. I wanted to do it, but no doubt when you're coming back they're going to be firing for you. You've just got to be strong and do the best that you can." On the season potentially being rather 'exciting' the retiring Jackson

sister La Toya explained. "It is, it's very exciting. I learned this time you can not really let your heart or emotions get too involved... This is business and you've got to keep it business. You can't let your emotions or heart be a part of this. And I think Donald's very, very good at that; he knows how to separate the two." Donald: "They both do great. It's exciting stuff - these two people are special people. Bret already won it and to be honest I was a little surprised. The other [winners] are sitting next to me as my advisors and Bret really wanted to go on the show and really make a lot of money for his charity. That took a lot of courage. As somebody that won the show, I was surprised. I don't think I would have done it... I think it's going to end up being very good for him, too. We'll see how that all turns out." Any big surprises ?

Donald: "I think what surprises me more than anything else is the fact that these are name people, these are people that are successful and in some cases very, very successful, like Bret and like La Toya. They're very successful people, and it is a tough go. They devote so much effort, so much time, so much energy, and I'm just amazed. I don't know - there aren't very many people that could do it, and I give a lot of credit to the people who go on the show. And certainly it's good for them but it's also good for charities. We've raised literally probably over $10m for charity on the various shows, and it's great. We actually had a couple of nights where we raised $1m, over $1m in one night. So it's been a great thing for charities." Any hesitation about going back on the show Bret or La Toya ? La Toya: "I wanted to do it in the very beginning but the second time around I was a bit hesitant because

MAR 2013 - issue (26)

I knew what I was faced with the first time. And I said, 'You know what, you never give up, you always have to keep believing, you have to believe that you're the winner, come through this really straight-forward and strong', and I went for it. I went for it, because if I've learned anything I've learned what Trump has taught us all - that we need to put our best foot forward and don't let anybody block us from anything that we wish to do or want to do. I felt it was very, very important to bring awareness as well to my charity, which was National Network To End Domestic Violence because this show is so big and so wonderful." Bret: "No hesitation on my part at all. I was excited to do it, I wanted to do it. When I actually did it the first time, I wasn't at the peak of my best health so this time getting the opportunity with All-Stars and with LaToya and everyone who was there and Trace and Penn... I mean, these guys are all of them successful at

PAGE 99

what they do. There's a reason Mr Trump and his show is a success he's a success in real life, in life life. And to be able to learn from that... I went in with no hesitation and realised that the competition was going to be fierce. We all know each other, we all know the way each other plays, and for me I just went in headstrong and had a great time going there - zero hesitation. I would do it again." What is it about this cast that creates so much drama ? Donald: "It's a strong cast. It's a very smart group of people. They're people that have done well in life and also in the show - for the most part in the show, and in life in all cases. It's a very nasty show. I mean, there's some deals... Omarosa is extremely nasty, I can tell you. I'm a big fan of Omarosa, by the way - I love Omarosa - but she was brutal, wouldn't you say, La Toya? And La Toya handled it very well, I will say. But it was not easy." Page 100

La Toya: "Absolutely brutal is right. I was told over and over she's very conniving and cunning and you're faced with it! It's right there! And she was brutal, absolutely" Joan Rivers is back yeh? Donald: "She'll be a judge. Don and Ivanka and Eric are judges, but what we'll do is put Piers [Morgan] on in a little bit. The conflict between Omarosa and Piers, which is just a continuation of what happened previously on the show as you know, the conflict is as good, as smart, as tough, as mean as anything we've ever had on the show. But Piers is a judge with me. He sits by my side replacing Ivanka a couple of times, and likewise with Joan." On Gary Busey's return? And what about Meat Loaf? Donald: "We didn't want to duplicate the show, so we may have Meat Loaf back at a later time. He MAR 2013 - issue (26)

was just great on the show, he was great. And Gary is very interesting, because he's somewhat different. He's been solidified! He's a piece of work! In his own way he's a genius. I guess we can say that, Bret and La Toya? He really he is, he's amazing." La Toya: "He really is. He's the smartest guy ever. As a matter of fact I just saw him last week and he's Gary. He hasn't changed a bit. And he loves you Mr Trump, that's all he talks about. You never know what's going to come out of his mouth that's the strangest part about it all, isn't it guys?" Donald: "He really did good. Bret knows him very well and I think he really did well and he shows some of his smarts." Bret: "Gary's a tremendously smart human being and a character all mixed into one, and the best part about it is it's real. It's sincere. He's not going out of his way to be it, it's just what he is. And he's also very intelligent in his own way."

Bret, what about your health ? Bret: "The first time I did it I was pretty sick, but this time I felt great and I really wanted to be there and do it." Who surprised you the most, and who are your threats? La Toya: "I think that in the beginning of the show, the biggest competitor, I knew it would probably be Penn. I just felt that, I don't know why, but I did. And Trace, of course. However, I felt that I would have a lot of problems with Omarosa. That was just a feeling, because you can tell in the beginning when you see the people sort of sizing you up and saying little things to you but you're still polite to them, at the same time you're going, 'Oh my God, it's going to be war at some point'. And you know it's going to happen, you know it's going to come. It's going to be an interesting season, let's put it that way."

Bret: "I look at everybody as massive competition on that show because everybody wants to win. They didn't go there to lose. And you've got to just bring your A-game and pray that it works. No doubt La Toya said it best - everybody's competitive and some of them on there, I won't mention any names, are pretty good TV, professional villains. And as much as I think I've got nerves of steel, they can rattle you! They can rattle you, no doubt." La Toya: "And Bret, you were a threat. We all know Bret has already won so it's just like you're thinking, 'Oh no, Bret's here, what are we going to do?' So yes, it's very competitive and that's one thing that you have to really, really mentally get yourself prepared for because people will do anything - and I do mean anything, as Bret knows - to win." What about bonding on the show?

MAR 2013 - issue (26)

Bret: "La Toya was great, honestly. She's fantastic. She's a unique person because she has a heart of gold and fiercely competitive. We kind of share that same thing you got a good heart but you also want to be very competitive. But everyone on the show - I've known Trace for a while, Penn, all these people. Very, very competitive people, and each of them brought a different winning quality to the table. I've got to be honest with you - it's a very, very, very dramatic season." La Toya: "Yes, I have to say that I was really, really thrilled - and I do mean thrilled, and I'm not saying this Bret because you're on the phone - to meet Bret. He's a big rockstar and I thought, 'He had already won!' He's wonderful and I just could not wait to meet him. And I never really expressed that to you because once you get there you get in work mode immediately because you know that competition is there. But I was truly looking forward to

meeting him and he's such a wonderful person. And I will always, always adore Bret, as well as Penn Jillette, who is such a sweetheart, isn't he guys?" Bret: "He's great - very intelligent and pretty to the point." La Toya: "He has a heart of gold, just like you, Bret." On the other competitors? Donald: "I can tell you that we have a lot of stars coming on that help the stars. Some of the biggest stars in Hollywood will be coming onto the show. We can't tell you who they are yet - we're not allowed to. But we have a lot of people coming on to help everybody. They've gotten a lot of their friends who are very, very big people in terms of mostly the entertainment world." Is this the most dramatic season yet? Donald: "I think it's certainly one of the most dramatic seasons. We have tremendous interest in this season. We brought back some of the people that everybody really liked, because it's an all-star season. I think, yeah, it's a very dramatic season. Some amazing things happen." La Toya: "You have no idea! It's very dramatic, it's very exciting. There's so much going on and you will see a lot of confrontations. It's going to be a blast you'll love it. You'll simply love it. Everyone will." This could easily have been your generic action comedy but it’s a whole lot of fun. And not just because of Kirsten Bell either. I hope. Anyway there are some great action sequences including outstanding car chases. Which is odd because most car chases fall flat on their ass, for reference see my Death Race 3 review from last month. All the actors look like they’re having a whole lot of fun and Bradley Cooper revels in playing such a big crazy bam. I’d definitely pick this up if you see it for a fiver, and these days that will probably be next week. Huzzah.

omething weird has happened to me, and I can pinpoint exactly when it happened. Watching Fanboys. Ever since I saw Kirsten Bell in the slave girl Princess Leia outfit at the end of Fanboys I can’t help but enjoy everything she’s in. I even watched back the previously horrible Pulse and suddenly thought that I may have judged it harshly last time. But that’s the effect Star Wars still has after all these years. It’s just crazy talk. This time she pairs up with Dax Shepard as lovers who are travelling to Los Angeles to get Kirsten Bell the job of her dreams. Unfortunately Dax Shepard is under witness protection and quite quickly has a crazy covered in dreadlocks Bradley Cooper chasing them for cash from a botched bank robbery. We also have a welcome return of Lex Luthor himself Michael Rosenbaum as Kirsten Bells crazy ex-boyfriend who chases them across the country.

crazy people who try to overtake him after driving through the countryside for like 5 hours. Is there even that much countryside in England? I’m pretty sure you could drive the length of the country in 5 hours. Anyway, it all goes a little Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It tries really hard to be a little different and tries to be intelligent, but it fails. It doesn’t just fail a little, it fails in every way imaginable. You’ll spend half the film shouting at Wil Johnson and the rest wondering why you’re still watching it. If you hate yourself or are into self-harm in any way then you should probably pick this up. If however you like your eyes then put the DVD down and back away… Just back away.

oooooo Dead End you say. That new Jamie Forman film, you know the one, he’s on the cover looking all mean. Good stuff you may be thinking. I mean usually you see a film starring Jamie Forman and you think, this should be good. He’ll be creepy and nasty. He’ll beat some people up and probably be all from Landan Tawn shouting at people. This time he does mean, and shouty, but even he can’t save this massive pile of dog excrement. That sounds a little harsh I hear you say, I’ve seen reviews online and they make the film sound awesome. They are wrong. Wil Johnson plays the main role and he is so horrifically bad that the only time the film is enjoyable is when he’s unconscious. It’s also the only time the film manages to get a flow going. But don’t worry, it’s all ruined again when he wakes up and stinks up the screen. Dead end follows an instantly unlikeable family going on a country trip to try and mend their broken lives. of it. There is action, science-fiction, aliens, violence and romance – what more could you possibly want? The film ends with the inclination that there will be another and I just hope the success of I am Number Four will encourage the director D.J.Caruso (Disturbia) to make the sequel. After noticing in the credits that the film was based on a book, I decided to have a look into – being the book geek that I am – and treated myself to the paperback version. I couldn’t believe how accurate the film was. I was gearing myself up for a letdown where the film is almost completely different but right up until the halfway point every single page and been followed religiously. There were some variations towards the end simply for a more dramatic visualisation in the film version. Without a doubt this film could be watched over and over again and be enjoyed by all the family so if you feel like watching something different, I’d recommend this and I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. ormally I don’t go in for Science-fiction and had I known that’s what this film was then I would never have watched it. I think I flicked it on simply because I fancied watching Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike). I am simply going to tell you up front – this film is incredible. The whole aliens-from-another-planet has never really been done in a way that isn’t cheesy, weird or just so unbelievable because the effects are dreadful. Granted there’s no darting around space like in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy but this film definitely makes up for it in the captivating super powers of John Smith (Pettyfer). We follow John on his journey of self-discovery with the ever looming threat of being next on the hit list of the Mogadorians. He’s spent his whole life on the run, moving from place to place, never being allowed to develop true friendships but all that has changed because he is the next to be hunted. I was so drawn into the film and loved every second

That’s right, commute, not emigrate! (This is the bit I like the most.) Everyone travels through the core of the earth in about a minute, how incredible – praise to whoever thought these things up. I was totally blown away by this film and I’m astounded that it hasn’t received a bigger round of applause from the public and I’m even more surprised that there hasn’t been relentless advertising about its release to DVD in December 2012. didn’t know what to expect when I sat myself down to watch this film. It wasn’t through any choice of my own; I was doing some science-fiction research for my University degree. I had seen bits of the original with Arnold Schwarzenegger and I have always stood by the statement: The originals are always the best, but I think in this case Colin Farrell (Seven Psychopaths) has given old Arnie a run for his money. I was unaware that Kate Beckinsale (Underworld) was in this film and she plays the elegant role of Douglas Quaid’s (Farrell) wife, Lori, but low and behold she turns out to be a double agent simply keeping an eye on him – a little bit of a spoiler there people but don’t worry this happens right at the beginning of the film. I love how this film is so action packed. It’s set in the future where we live in box-like apartments that all build together in a jumble of shapes – and float! Not just that though, Britain is no longer governed by itself. Now, I thought an American film is going to MAR 2013 - issue (26)

It has an outstanding ensemble cast including Russell Tovey, Jack O’Connell, Ralph Brown, Julie Graham and the woman with the best name ever, Monserrat Lombard. They relish in their roles as panic stricken residents trying their hardest to survive while being picked off one by one. f you’ve ever spent any time watching BBC Three, you’ve probably had the misfortune of seeing that 2 pints show. I know I’ve stumbled across it when drunk and the mere sight has made me throw up everywhere… Yeah, it was the show and not the booze... What are you trying to insinuate? Anyway the reason I bring it up is that after seeing that you’d probably want to stay away from anything with Sheridan Smith in it. But you’d be wrong, she’s in Jonathan Creek AND a bunch of Doctor Who radio plays. Therefore she is awesome. So we’re going to completely disregard her old TV show because she is outstanding in this film. It all begins in a tower block, (you know, like the title of the film) the whole building is empty with the exception of the top floor. One night a young boy is beaten to death, Sheridan Smith gets her head bashed in trying to save him. No one else even tries to help and when the police turn up to question them, no one saw nuffink. the system to do what needs to be done. The partner that’s nervous in a gun fight cause he has a family at home. The bad guys with bad English accents that are really nasty pieces of work. It has them all and the film is better for having them. It doesn’t try to be some deep meaningful thriller. It’s an action film the way action films are meant to be. Oh, and lets talk about the action for a moment. It’s brutal. The bad guys do some rather nasty torture which to be honest is the only time where you wonder what the hell the director is doing because he keeps cutting it with images of the city for no reason but hey, the actual action sequences when they happen are outstanding. So many directors who try to direct action sequences ruin them, like the guy who directed Taken 2. The action sequences ruined that film, they just weren’t as good as the original and it felt a little flat because of it. This guy though, William Kaufman, directs some outstanding action sequences on virtually no budget. If you see any more action films out there by this guy then pick them up as he knows what he’s doing.

elcome to one the worst titles a film could ever have. Bad cop… Who the devil thought of that? In Americaland it’s called Saints and Sinners, but lets face it, that’s not much better. This film looks like it should be awful. The main character is played by a guy called Johnny Strong, who has previously been in The Fast and Furious and the Get Carter remake. Yep, he’s that good. You add into the mix Method Man, Tom Berenger, Sean Patrick Flannery, Kim Coates and Jolene Blalock in tiny small roles to beef up the acting credentials and a story line that would have been at home in the late 80s and you should have something horrendous. But it’s amazing.

Another bonus of this film is that I picked up the Bluray for just £5 online. The DVD was only £3. You need to pick it up if you like crazy 80s action films. You won’t be disappointed. They don’t really make many films like this anymore, and that’s a sad sad thing.

Uncharted 3 Multiplayer

U

ncharted 3’s Multiplayer Goes Free-to-Play Downloadable on the PlayStation Store is Uncharted 3’s Multiplayer component has went freeto-play. A pretty big 4.8 GB component but the Uncharted multiplayer has always been brilliant is worth every memory. Hopefully this will bring new players not familiar with the uncharted series to the intensely high combat action. On the PlayStation Blog it was more detailed: Once you download the Free-to-Play game from the PS Store you can hop online and play for as long as you want, as much as you want, up to Level 15. Upon reaching Level 15, you’re welcome to continue to play as long as you want without paying a penny more. We’ll continue to track your earned experience points as you play, although you won’t be able to unlock or access them. However should you choose to unlock the

level cap, we’ll retroactively apply those achievements to your profile and we’ll continue to allow you to build up your profile right from where the Level 15 cap stops you. Although if you choose not unlock the level cap or purchase anything you’ll be missing out on a slew of cool in-game items and downloadable content we have made for the game to date. Here’s a rundown of what you can unlock: • Unlocks Co-Op Adventure mode including the Fort Adventure DLC • Unlocks to gain access to the Co-Op Arena Playlist including the Co-Op Shade Survival Mode DLC for UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Free to Play • Competitive MP (No Level Limit) – Removes the level cap for UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Free to Play • Removes the Level 15 cap and allows you to play UNCHARTED 3: Multiplayer Free to Play up to Level 25

Includes Flashback Map Pack 1, Flashback Map Pack 2, and Drake’s Deception Map Pack • Single Player Experience – Uncover the Truth. Unlock the Single Player campaign. Naughty Dog’s Robert Cogburn recently stated that the pricing structure for rank unlocks and other microtransactions would look something like this: • Competitive MP with Level 15 Cap: Free • Raise Level Cap to 25: $4.99 • Co-op Arena (W/Shade Mode): $9.99 • Co-op Adventure (W/Fort Co-op): $11.99 • Level Cap Removed: $19.99 Prices should change to match British currency rates.

Server issues cause launch of latest Sim City title to gring to a halt

I

f you have been a PC gamer over the past 10 years then I’m guessing a new Sim City title makes your ears prick up and you tend to take notice when any info arises. It was a long wait for the new reboot to appear, simply branded Sim City as opposed to Sim City 5 or Sim City 2013, hence we’re calling it a reboot.

Page 116

The wait was over on a dreary day in March 2013 and as thousands of eager Sim’ites installed their much anticipated game they were stopped dead in their tracks by something out of their control. The new Sim City you see is one of the first ‘ALWAYS connected’ type games that require a constant internet connection to function. Not only that, the actual game also requires a connection to Sim City’s own servers to actually install a large chunk of the game prior to playing… there is absolutely NO offline mode included. On the day of launch this Always On process actually stopped 100’s

of thousands of players getting a connection to the game servers quoting days before a connection would be available. Maxis have apparently been working tirelessly to resolve the situation with up to 200% more background servers and connections being installed since the game release. I’ve only seen someone trying to play once and on first connection the fastest quoted connection slot was 35mins after they tried to play. If I had to wait 35mins to play a game I’d defo be playing something else.

REVIEW

I

’ve slowly began to accept now that the Dead Space series is becoming more about action and less about horror at least it’s not a disaster and turned out to be rather an exciting and thrilling game. Dead Space 3 see’s the return of Isaac Clark, showing more of his “normal” life, on the moon, at the beginning of game before being hauled out by Captain Robert Norton and Sergeant John Carver, the last remaining battalion of Page 120

EarthGov, claiming they need his expertise of Marker’s and to help find Ellie Langford and her team who prior to the events of Dead Space 3 was romantically involved with Isaac and has now gone missing. During their escape the group are attacked by Unitoligist’s and their leader Jacob Danik who activates a Marker causing another Necromorph outbreak. Isaac and the last of EarthGov travel to the frozen planet of Tau Volantis, Ellie’s last known location. The new feature to Dead Space 3 is the drop-in/drop-out co-op, allowing you and a friend to take on the campaign together and continue in solo if your partner leaves. The MAR 2013 - issue (26)

DEA

other player will control John Carver who has his own set of problems and will have alternate experiences as a result of their characters dementia. Carver will see things that that aren’t actually there, such as toy soldiers. Also there are certain side quest’s that are co-op only. The gameplay focuses a lot more heavily on combat this time round, fighting both a variety of necromorph’s and human soldiers. Fighting against humans may give you a more tactical style by taking cover with a decent covering mechanic allowing crouching and blind fire. The human AI isn’t particularly challenging, most tend to rush you, while others will usually

AD SPACE 3 hang back and throw grenades at you. The game definitely seems to be heavily set on co-op as necromorph’s will attack in considerably greater numbers even in solo play.

Weapons have had a major overhaul with weapon crafting, allowing you to create some nasty concoctions. You can swap out the rotor on the Plasma Cutter and replace it with as melee knife, you can combine a Spike Gun with a Force Gun secondary fire mode or go Aliens style and craft an machine gun with a flamethrower attachment. The game replaces all individual ammo for each weapon and is replaced universal ammo, though

it may seem a bit of a downer, I still struggled with retaining ammo.

The story isn’t the best out there and is far from horror as it goes. Why they decided to put in love triangle in Dead Space was beyond me (I won’t spoil much more) and towards the end it seemed to have turned in Prometheus. For scares, Dead Space 3 delivers a few jump scares there and their but no bone chilling environments to explore. The thing that always makes jump though, and succeeds almost every is the elevator door closing behind you, it almost sounds like something has jumped out behind but sadly it’s just door. MAR 2013 - issue (26)

Dead Space 3 may seem a tad more of an action/adventure game rather than a survival horror but nether less the game isn’t disappointing and is rather good. The co-op works beautifully and the weapons crafting offers a lot more fun and attention to the game.

REVIEW

I

t’s been almost 5 years since Metal Gear Solid: Rising was announced from Konami, while showing some new features their and there, they kept quite most of the time. Then in 2010 they reported that the game was cancelled but picked up by Platinum games and the gameplay was recreated in their vision of the hack’n’slash genre. Therefore Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is completely different from the original Metal Gear franchise of the stealth genre with a new tagline of Lightning Bolt Action rather than Tactical Espionage Page 126

Action. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance see’s the return of not so popular but turned fan favourite Raiden, protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. The game is set 4 years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Raiden has joined with PMC to help rebuild and African town from civil war and provide support for his family. Not too long Raiden’s convoy is attacked and by an unknown force with heavy cyborg enhancements and Raiden must do what he can to stop this menace and falls to highly superior opponent named Sam whom cuts Raiden’s left eye and right arm off then leaving him for dead. Raiden returns with his brand new cyborg body and enhancements to seek revengeance on the group. The story of Revengeance to me and particularly fans of the Metal Gear MAR 2013 - issue (26)

Story lines may seem a bit odd at times. It doesn’t really seem to fit in with an original Metal Gear Solid story, they just throw in a bunch of topics that were used in past games to almost make it fit such as the Patriots and SOP. New fans might not know what they’re talking about we do and it’s easy to follow the story which is not usually the case for Metal Gear game. Gameplay wise, it’s in good hands as Platinum Games are famous for Bayonetta and Vanquish, both very good game, and done the game justice. The parry feature which is the main block mechanic can take some time to get used (on my part anyway, didn’t know how to properly use it through my first play through) and isn’t fully explained during VR Training Missions. To purchase new moves and upgrades you and sell cyborg body parts such as heads and limbs for points

to purchase new combat moves for Raiden’s already impressive combos. The most promising feature of the gameplay is blade mode, it’s unbelievably fun even more easy to use. It was a feature that was to be used in Metal Gear Solid: Rising that Konami wanted to be kept for Revengeance. To recharge your health and energy collect replenishments but the most efficient and brutal way is to slice your enemy at the correct angle to rip out their spine absorb there electrolytes, simple and awesome. The enemies can be challenging at the majority of the time but have no consideration for themselves or friendly fire as grunts have an inexplicable tendency to throw grenades at you when there 3 feet away from you and his “teammates” are right next to me. Also RPG guys like to shoot you when you stand directly in front them hitting you

and them which is just uncalled for and daft. Grunts are pretty easy to dispose of then more challenging opponents like Gecko’s and Raptors will attack you which will require hacking them a little bit more before slicing of a limb. The boss fights in the game are something to look forward towards the end of the level, with lengthy gameplay it’s not a bore. Plus after you defeat one the Desperado bosses you keep their weapon and is available to use and offers a lot more combat options. Sadly the game is unbelievably short. Levels last an hour if you’re lucky, or should I say unlucky, and roughly last about 30 minutes of actual gameplay if you cut out the cut-scenes and codec conversations etc. There’s actually a trophy/ achievement for completing a certain level in less than 7 minutes. MAR 2013 - issue (26)

It does make up for its replay ability through collectable items such as weapons, costumes and VR missions. The characters aren’t particularly strong and ones for the history books, with the exception of Sam. Jetstream Sam is probably the only new character that poses any background and detail to his character. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance overall is rather a surprisingly good game were the fun never stops and should not be missed for new fans and especially for fans of the Metal Gear series. With only a few issues the game is probably one of the better games to come out this year. Sam Sheppard for GoGuide Magazine

hen a preview of Aliens: Colonial Marines was shown last year it looked pretty impressive with showing great graphics and an intense battle sequence.

not to love so far? The only thing missing from the original film franchise is the tension and atmosphere that film gave of. You control Corporal Winter and similar to the original Aliens theme, the game follows a small group of characters through the aftermath of the original Aliens film, such as The

Sulaco and Hadley’s Hope, the alieninfested planet.

he is awful with his unlimited ammo smart-gun.

The story shows that initially you are stuck in the original cast’s shadow by being able to pick legendary weapons that are actually weapons from the film, hidden in each level. In your group you have Bella, who only fills in the shows of Vasquez, the hard woman from film and O’Neal, who does bring emotion to the game but I did get annoyed as

Your squad members aren’t that much of a help and you would better of going alone as they tend to spoil any tension. A few times I’ve encountered my team running on the spot unable to move until you’ve gone ahead and they magically appear behind you. They aren’t particularly good at killing either, just an un-killable distraction for the MAR 2013 - issue (26)

zombie that rushes you until you encounter the spitter aliens. The motion sensor is available to track movement but you never really get sense to use as you will hear a warning ping without even equipping it. Then again you never really feel like prey. You will also fight human mercenaries in addition to killing aliens, even though they tend to deal more damage than the “deadly” aliens, there no smarter. Page 132

The mercenaries do add another gameplay style, forcing you to go behind cover, flanking them and also never really used my grenades until fighting them. These far too often clashes though only seem to drive away from what we loved about Aliens. There aren’t any real memorable moments in the game apart from the beginning of the game, an ambitious (but for me rather buggy) boxing match with a large and bulky alien while controlling a power loader and an MAR 2013 - issue (26)

eerie stealth section where you have to avoid exploding aliens with no weapons. The multiplayer component takes players controlling both marines and aliens and pits them together in combat. It’s here though were you feel like prey and stalking is key meaning motion trackers are useful. It’s nothing to be head over heels for but can fun to play occasionally. Deathmatch is standard and variations of point captures is there

to play but probably the best mode coming DLC is “Survivor”, where a group a marines press through a series of checkpoints as a barrage of Aliens swarm on you, somewhat feels true to the nature of the Alien franchise. There is also a pretty decent customization feature where you can change load outs and appearances of both marines and aliens.

turned out to be a big flop. The game fails to connect us to any real sense of terror or horror that made the film great in the first place. If you have never played Sega’s Aliens vs Predator, the Marine campaign in that I would say was better than the whole Colonial Marines game.

T

he Blues Brothers is a 1980 American musical comedy film directed by John Landis and starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as “Joliet” Jake and Elwood Blues, characters developed from the The Blues Brothers musical sketch on the NBC variety series Saturday Night Live. It features musical numbers by R&B, soul, and blues singers James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and John Lee Hooker. The film is set in and around Chicago, Illinois, and also features non-musical supporting performances by John Candy, Carrie Fisher, Charles Napier, and Henry Gibson. The story is a tale of redemption for paroled convict Jake and his brother Elwood, who take on “a mission from God” to save from foreclosure the Catholic orphanage in which they grew up. To do so they must reunite their rhythm and blues band and organize a performance to earn $5,000 to pay the tax assessor. Along the way, they are targeted by a destructive “mystery woman,” Neo-Nazis, and a country band, all while being relentlessly pursued by Page 140 MAR 2013 and - issuewestern (26) the police.
