T

he Alphabox hail from a combined Livingston, Bathgate and Edinburgh and consists of Frazer Brown on guitar and lead vocals, Ryan Barmanroy on Bass and Backing vocals, Kris Szczepan on lead guitar and Dougie Gallacher on Synth & programming. They were formed back in late 2011 and despite being fairly early on in the bands life they were lucky enough to score a slot at SkyFest this summer. Skyfest is a 2 day event hosted for the Scottish employees of Sky TV and is usually held in a rather large location each

summer. It’s usually a family event with some live music tagged into the day but this year (not sure about last years?) it also had an evening event for the adults and featured artists like The View, Stooshe and Example. The band’s debut EP Flash Harry was released in May this year and is an interesting collection of pop/rock tunes, although the bands FB page describes them as more dance/electro/rock, I’d suggest it is just a little on the ‘conservative’ and poppy side of thing for that ‘rock’ tag with a lot more bands covering this genre with a little more power… ok… lets give them the benefit of the doubt for now and let’s say electro/rock and see what the album due out later this year brings us. I’d like to see a more edgy guitar side of things coming through in the vein of XCNN or Tin Star (yeh basically the same core people but two

definite different takes on dance/rock music. The bands influences do kinda hint at what the sound they might be aiming for with The Smiths vs Daft Punk, Oasis vs Orbital, Manic Street Preachers vs Leftfield, New Order vs Pink Floyd and Stone Roses vs My Bloody Valentine. It’s a semi eclectic bunch of bands and one that does tweak ones interest to actually hear what the band actually sounds like, which is a good thing as I’m sure there will be a host of people thinking the same thing. Apart from that wee niggle previously the EP is competent and enjoyable, wait those are sh*t adjectives to describe music, let me try that again… turn the volume up, forget the gripe and the EP thunders along for the first and standout track Flash Harry which for the most part is nearly 5 minutes of super cool indie/pop/rock which is defo going in the right direction. Second track Open Hearts kinda takes it down a notch and in a slightly different direction with its strummed acoustic guitar. Lights Up, the third track, picks things up again and starts the drive home for the EP’s finisher and It does this with a dreamy

OCT 2012 - issue (22)

drum and bass grove, distant breathy vocals and crashing guitars setting things up nicely for Sunday Morning Frozen. SMF starts quietly and has a prolonged build up for me with nearly 2:30 of intro before the laid back vocal comes in, it ebbs and flows along only interrupted with cutting and stabbing guitars lines now and then. It’s definitely a dreamy end to the 4 tracks and one that does leave you wanting more so kudos all round for that. I for one will look on impatiently for the full album which might just do these four tracks more justice as some of them do feel like they are support characters rather than the stars in what potentially could be a truly amazing big picture album if you get my drift? Keep heading in that right direction guys and i for one will be on that download button sooner than you can say . Flash Harry EP is available for FREE on digital download so see the guys Facebook page for all the details and their gig goings one etc. @ www.facebook.com/ thealphaboxuk Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine

e covered The Begbies very recently but I believe that work rate should always be rewarded and these guys seem to have a great work ethic and don’t seem to be content with just sitting in the rehearsal rooms doing the odd gig or two when the fancy takes them. The Begbies debut video for their song Tales of a Lonely Ex was released only a couple of months back and has racked up an impressive 4500+ views already which is pretty impressive and the 2nd most watched video from a West Lothian band, only beaten into 2nd place by the crushing As Autumn Falls ‘Tonight I’m The

Snake’ video which has gained nearly 12,000 views in in just over 6 months. The video is one of the first ‘story’ type videos I’ve seen from a local band and is really a pretty impressive looking piece of work which was shot, directed and edited by impressive movie maker Keir ‘Dawson’ Siewert @ Breaking Point Flix. The story, which I’m presuming hints at a ‘Lonely Ex’ theme between the two female cast members, entwines with live footage shot in a Craigshill housing scheme. Not resting on their laurels however as the guys have just released their brand new single last week on iTunes called Ashleigh/Forever Here with a new video again done by the amazing Mr Siewert. Ashleigh is a gem of a tune and is a proper snapshot of just what The Begbies are all about. It’s a catchy indie/rick/ ska blend that really gives them an identity all of their own... oh and they don’t miss a trick with the singalong chorus either. I really liked OCT 2012 - issue (22)

the wee cool break at the end of the track as well with the trumpets an’ all. The second track or the B-Side for us oldies, Forever Here is another gear altogether and truly shows how mature and comfortable these guys really are with the direction and sound they are looking for. It’s an sombre but anthemic tune which builds throughout although never really taking you completely over the edge like you might be expect it to, it just keeps you bubbling over and always wanting just that little more. A very well put together couple of tune from The Begbies and definitely looking like being up there as one of the best bands to come from West Lothian in a very long time. www.facebook.com/thebegbies Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine

SOAP CLEAROUT

keeping a clear complexion.

FASHION - FEATURE

Our typical dude will be thinking my face is clean, I wash it all the time with that nice smelling soap I get for Xmas, ring any bells? Trust me, it just isn’t the right approach. Your typical soap, or even worse those perfumed and coloured ones you do get for Xmas do way more harm than good. Initially they may appear to clean your skin but what they actually do is strip all the natural oils out of your skin at the same time. Use a facial CLEANSER instead to remove every day dirt to promote a basic clear and healthy skin. Always apply your cleanser while your skin is wet so doing it in the shower is an ideal time. Take a small amount and massage it over your face and neck and then ensure that you rinse thoroughly. For an ideal finish apply lotion immediately after leaving the shower in order to lock in moisture.

DEEP DIRT EXFOLIATE your face at least a couple of times a week will help in removing any deeply embedded dirt, cleaning out your pores and remove surface dead skin cells the use of. Exfoliating also encourages new skin cell growth, helps keep fine lines to a minimum and really does make your shaving routine a whole lot more comfortable and easier. Exfoliating creams available today contain vitamins, minerals, herbs and plant extracts and are designed to soften the skin and keep it smooth without damaging the top layer of your skin.

FINAL STEP Even after washing your face with cleanser there may still be a little grease, dirt or soap hanging around so for best results use a TONER to finish off. Use a small amount of toner with a cotton ball/round swab and apply to skin with pretty gentle strokes.

Page 20

OCT 2012 - issue (22)

A WEE BIT EXTRA

It is very important that before purchasing any skin products you find out your own skin type.

Sure, us dudes do usually have thicker and more coarse skin than a woman’s is but MOISTURISING should still be an important part of our basic routine. Despite your cleaning regime there are certain things that we have little control over that can damage skin without us even knowing it. There are things like Environmental conditions, Pollution and Free Radical damage (NO… not the 1998 jazz funk band, it’s a scientific term which goes over my head so check online if you really need to) none of which are very discriminative between the sexes and affect both men and women with all skin types effected with symptoms including dryness and other damage.

Check how your skin looks and feels: DRY SKIN most often feels tight and flaky. OILY SKIN will be naturally shiny, greasy and most prone to acne and spots. COMBINATION SKIN usually appears greasy in some areas (forehead, nose and chin) while other areas can be normal or even dry. IF you are still unsure what type you have make sure you consult your doctor or a dermatologist for confirmation.

Those with oily skin simply look for an oil-free type of moisturizer which will hydrate your skin won’t cause any additional greasiness. For older guys try one with an anti-ager built in as it will also help with wrinkles and other signs of aging skin.

ENJOY THE SUNSHINE Yeh, Scotland, I know but in order to ensure you can enjoy any sunshine we do get you should add a SUNBLOCK to your regular routine in order to keep yourself safe from skin cancer. Many men simply dismiss sunscreen on a daily basis and for a good part of the year in our climate it would probably be pretty unnecessary but there are times when it should be used daily.

THE SHOPPING LIST So what does a typical guy need in his skincare shopping basket as he heads to the checkout on a Tuesday night so no one sees him? Check the list: CLEANSER - a daily cleanser minus any fancy fragrances but look for a multiaction one if you can. EXFOLIATOR – to remove dead skin cells and leave skin smoother. TONER - to deep clean skin without making it dry. MOISTURISER – to help re-hydrate skin. These can contain anti-aging and sun protection. SUNSCREEN - Look for UVA and UVB blocking. that’s to play host to the first show of the day, Christopher Kane. Once I’ve got my pass I’m ushered in to a lift by a burly security man dressed in black who wouldn’t look out of place on the door or Spearmint Rhino and whisked up to the 6th floor where the action is about to unfold. So what to expect from Christopher Kane, the Scots boy who can do no wrong? I have absolutely no idea but as a huge fan of his work, I can’t wait to find out. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning as I enter the massive backstage area to see rails of beautiful clothes, rows of shoes, a huge spread of prêt a manger goodies that have my stomach growling and what can only be described as an army of 7 foot tall beauties. 30 minutes and 2 pain au chocolates later it transpires that, as is often the way during fashion week, the designer’s vision for the hair has altered. Cue another 45 minutes of hanging about trying to avoid stuffing anymore of the delicious pastries down my throat whilst we wait for the head stylist to come up with a new plan of attack… 10.45am - By now the make up team are about half way through the models so looks like we have some catching up to do. The head stylist for the show, the rather lovely Anthony Turner, gives us a quick step by step on creating the slicked back, fierce ponytail that’s been decided on and we’re off…With a start time of 1pm there’s no time for hanging about and I barely have a chance to notice the dozens of bloggers, editors and photographers that seem to be taking up every available space. 12.50pm - And breathe. It’s almost show time. The models are dressed and the clothes are to DIE for. With a collection that’s in keeping with his feminine, fluffy style but with an injection of the gothic trend that we’re seeing everywhere this A/W it’s fair to say the boy wonder didn’t disappoint. There was nuts and bolts replacing buttons and fastening, this seems slightly odd but then it started to make sense when you notice amidst all the pastels and prettiness one of the models is wearing a t-shirt with a print of Frankenstein on it and another is wearing a tough black leather biker jacket, then there’s the dress that appears to have pieces of duct tape holding it together, almost resembling stitches, a look I’m not sure I’ll be trying next season but genius nonetheless. It’s certainly taking customizing to a whole new level. All in all it’s a crazy, chaotically methodical collection from the man that does contradictions better than anyone else. 13:00pm - Time for show number 2… Cheryl Bowes for GoGuide Magazine OCT 2012 - issue (22)

PLEDGE LIFE

FUNDING IS PLEDGE FUNDING THE NEW HOLY GRAIL FOR UNSIGNED BANDS, INVENTORS, DEVELOPERS AND COMPANIES LOOKING TO RAISE CASH?

H

aving dealt with many unsigned bands over the years, hearing all about their efforts to fund their latest project isn’t a new thing. For many years small unsigned bands have used things like selling gig tickets, merchandise, CD’s etc. all to fund tours or more recording sessions and even eventual album releases. In an increasingly online world it was only a matter of time before something came up with some sort of idea that lets people do this sort of thing online. Now coming from a music background is what got me to looking into these sites and their whole premise of the ‘Pledge’ system opened my eyes to the fact that it is not only bands/artists Page 26

that are using these sites to fund their ideas. It seems the list of users is kinda endless… Musicians, Artists, Writers, Games Developers, Film Makers, Inventors, Product Developers to name but a few. So, unlike using a traditional process to raise funds such as loans, investment bankers, grants, Dragons Den people have been turning to these new systems to get the cash injections their projects need.

made it. Understand? Maybe? OK… as a simple example say an unsigned band want to record a new album. They have been in the rehearsal studio for months and have spent all their cash on getting their 10 tunes rock solid and are ready to record those tracks and get their album out there to the public. Check our wee chart for an idea of just whats involved in cost wise in producing a bog standard CD you might biut of your mates band.

The pledge system is basically a method that allows someone to sell their producs + benefits to the buyers before they have actually

So for a typical album we can see it’s pretty expensive for an independent band to produce and promote a typical album release. Step forward

UNSIGNED ALBUM COSTS • 7 days in a £250 a day studio = • Photo shoot for album artwork = • Promo material for album (t-shirts, • badges, press packs etc) = • Album Launch Party and other promo = • Physical CD creation, • registration for online sales etc =

£1750 £500 £500 £1000 £1000

Total = £3850 OCT 2012 - issue (22)

the pledge system. Pledge websites such as PledgeMusic, Kickstart etc. allow musicians the opportunity to sell their product in advance on the promise or ‘pledge’ that they will provide the person with the item they have bought at a later date. You can set up a number of items, and a quantity available for each, for various different people to pledge against. An overall goal amount and timescale is set for the project and if the goal is reached within the timescale the funds are released to the person who set it up and debited from the pledgers card/account. If the goal isn’t reached no funds are taken from the pledgers and the process ends with no money raised. Using our band/album example from earlier let’s say they set up a project to raise the money to record and promote their album. They set up pledges for say just a plain CD for £5 with a qty of 400 and 250 signed CD’s for £7 raising a grand total of £3750 if all pledges are taken up. They set their goal as £3750 to cover the majority of their costs. This allows the band to guage interest in their album, to also get stuff done where they know they will not be £1000’s of pound out of pocket and to carry it out on a faster timescale than they might have had before.

There is obviously more to it than I’ve mentioned here but the fundamentals are there and anyone interested should check out the possibilities of using a pledge method to raise funds. Some bands you may be surprised to learn that have used or who are actively using some form of pledge funding: LCD SoundSystem (DVD), Martha Wainwright (Album/Promo/Tour), Brand New Heavies (Album), B.B. King (Box Set), Then Jerico (Album), Ben Folds Five (Album), Gun (Album), Hugh Cornwell (Album), Yashin (Album), Ian McCulloch (Album), Daniel Bedingfield (Album), The Rasmus (Album), The Libertines (DVD), InMe (Album), The Subways (Album), Fun Lovin’ Criminals (Box Set), Funeral For A Friend (Album), Dan Reed (Album)

C

harlie Simpson’s album ‘Young Pilgrim’ reached number 6 in the UK album charts and was the first fan ‘pledge’ funded album through PledgeMusic’s direct-to-fan platform to make it into the UK Top Ten. Fans generated the funds to allow the ex Fighstar/Busted frontman to record his first solo album in return for a special limited edition EP of new material and access to a range of exclusive additional offers. “When Charlie approached us earlier this year, he had a very clear idea of what he wanted to achieve,” said Malcolm Dunbar, PledgeMusic Managing Director. “He was very focused on interacting with his fans and involving them fully in the process of recording his new solo album. We worked closely with Charlie to put together a really compelling pledge campaign and on an A&R level PledgeMusic helped him realise his ambitions for the record.”

We have used the band scenario only as an example but the same system can be used for many different projects and you would be surprised about the things being funded in this way and the amounts of money being raised. We’ve highlighted some of the largest and most interesting pledge projects to date on the following couple of pages. Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine

n the Android market Angry Birds has been downloaded more times than pretty much any other game. Hitting on the same kind of theme Stupid Zombies uses a similar concept where you need to angle your shot in order to take out the most zombies with each bullet with the ultimate aim to do it in as least shots as possible in order to progress levels. A single shot can have several ricochets thus on some

ombie Booth is a photo processing app that basically takes facial images and with some wee additions and changes turns into salivating 3D zombie monsters. You can choose to either snap a new photo or try an existing one from your gallery. The whole change takes a few seconds to process and the effect work to varying degrees, some are pretty convincing while others fall short, so it’s a case of trial and error until you

find one that you like. I tried one using a pic of my niece that turned out to be particularly disturbing. The tech behind Zombie Booth is that it scans each photo you choose and works out the positions of your eyes, mouth and other facial elements are in the photo. It then layers zombie like features over the top – like rotting flesh, blood and even a set of zombie gnashers. It then adds a 3D element to the image and sound effects to complete the transfer. The cool bit is that if you leave your newly created friend to his own devices he will simply look around gormlessly moaning and groaning, but try taping an area of the screen

and your pet will look roughly in that direction. The braver among you can try tapping near its threatening mouth and find it snapping at it or gnawing on it if you leave it there. Blood pleasingly splatters your screen, and when you remove your finger the zombie rewards you with a gratified burp. Your creations are all saved to memory so you can show them off to friends. The app certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted and is truly not child friendly as some of the creations can be pretty disturbing. It’s a cool wee toy and although rather unsettling to see yourself reduced to one of the undead chewing on the end of your finger its entertainment value is pretty high.

conditioning centres in West Lothian, if not the whole of Scotland. We have got together with the guys at T.O.D Coaching and Fit Inc. Studio Gym for our BRAND NEW ‘Fitness’ section where the guys will strive to bring you the very best in exercise, training, conditioning and bootcamp workouts, diets and eating habits and specialist event training regimes. To kick off here is a wee bit from Ryan Stewart one of the great Personal Trainers down at the studio...

J

ust a quick introduction of myself, I am David Low and I have been working in the Fitness Industry for over eight years now and for me every day has its own challenges and learning curves. I have been plying my trade at Fit Inc Studio Gym as a Personal Trainer/Combat Coach for over a year now and have to say I love my job. For me every day is an opportunity to learn however I see far too many people who are too closed minded on trying new ways of thinking especially when it comes to training. Knowledge is the key to succeeding in anything and is

Page 42

vitally important when it comes to anyone seeking progress or achievement in Sport/Training. Through Fit Inc we follow the trademark of Knowledge - Led - Fitness which in terms is us passing on our knowledge to people willing to listen and learn. At Fit Inc we provide a wide variety of options in training from sweating it out in the gym to enjoying the benefits of good old Mother Nature at her best. Many people have their own take on a good workout, from the body builders seeking to lift greater and greater weights to marathon runners seeking to beat the clock on every run. The common factor they all have is they receive that same adrenaline rush from their own workouts. Though for me there’s nothing I enjoy more than getting out and enjoying what’s outside our front doors and it could be argued the greatest training environment in the world is MOTHER NATURE. MOTHER NATURES GYM T

he majority of us are very selfconscious so the gym is a very intimidating place to go.

Outdoor Benefit Number 2

FRESH AIR

What if I told you, that you could seek all your fitness goals for free and not have to step one foot into a gym. Sound good? The great outdoors so misunderstood though the fun you could have and the benefits you could receive from exercising outdoors are endless. So lets see the benefits available and what you can get up to using mother nature as your very own low tech gym.

Nothing beats the outdoors for clean air, yes nowadays we are doing what it seems are utmost to pollute our world the outdoors is still twice as clean as air you’d find in a gym. Research suggests that most of us spend 90% of our time indoors which is a pretty alarming. The human body and mind was never designed to spend 90% of its time secluded from the outdoor world.

Outdoor Benefit Number 1

IT’S FREE No membership payments or the struggle to get on a machine. The outdoors is everyone’s to share and enjoy. You don’t need specialised equipment to get fit; you just have to know where to start. The outdoors is always open with no time limits, no restrictions on what you can and can’t do. OCT 2012 - issue (22)

PAGE 43

FITNESS

Outdoor Benefit Number 3

FEATURE

HIGHER LEVELS OF POST EXERCISE ENDORPHINS Research papers suggest that people who train outdoors may experience higher levels of post exercise endorphins. Endorphins are endogenous opioid compounds that are produced in the pituitary gland and hypothalamus during exercise. They act as natural pain-relievers and produce a feeling of wellbeing. The name endorphin derives from the words ‘endogenous’ and ‘morphine’ i.e. morphine like substance originating from within the body.

Outdoor Benefit Number 4

MORE FREEBIES Yes, mother nature gives you more freebies and much better than your free water bottle and towel you usually get. As you may know the body needs vitamins and nutrients to function properly. Through the sunlight your body receives doses of vitamin D enough without worrying about taking any supplements. Another little bonus you might even pick yourself up a little tan, ok rare but you never know, and do ALWAYS be prepared with a good sun screen.

Outdoor Benefit Number 5

OPEN YOUR MIND While outdoors your mind becomes more active as it has to take in its surroundings, from hills you climb to a winding path or to the terrain you’re on. Open your mind; open your heart to the outdoors. Fit Inc encourage their clients to try and experience an outdoor session from flipping tyres, to slugging it round with a log over the shoulder... all great ways to keeping fit. Page 44

Much used Burton stalwart John

rom Edward Scissorhands to Charlie and the Choclate Factory. From Sweeney Todd to Alice in Wonderland. Tim Burton has made his name in the film industry. He is on the list of celebrities alongside Stephen Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino. It is safe to say that Burton is the Marmite effect: you either love him or you hate him. The big question now is what films are better; his new stuff or the old? In his early years, Burton stepped up and he branched out into a style that hadn’t yet been considered. He worked with original ideas that were not only risky but incredibly elaborate and sinister. Did it work? Thirty years later and he’s still going strong, I’d say that’s a yes. Some of his classic films are The Nightmare before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, Sleepy Hollow and the fast favourite; Edward Scissorhands. What is it that makes these films so popular? Why is it that Edward Scissorhands is played on Film4 every school holiday? Why does the film The Nightmare before Christmas have more memorabilia merchandise than most modern films? Because they are clearly films that the people want. Not to mention the success of the Batman films, that included the legendary Jim Carrey as the Riddler. What a way to stand out of the crowd. Burton has made himself a name and his own style of doing things.

REVIEW

The big question now is whether we see this flair in his new stuff. There seems to have been a number of complaints about the most recent films, especially Dark Shadows; an imprisoned vampire is set free and he returns to home to find his descendants are in need of his help. There were high hopes for this film as the adverts proved promising with snippets of classic Johnny Depp humour and another legendary collaboration with Burton and yet the overall consensus resulted in disappointment. Burton discovered Depp in the early 1990s and since then they have teamed up again and again to produce some of the best in the film industry. Whether it’s a sinister film with hints of comedy or a serious one such as Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, they dynamic duo have done it successfully. So what is it about this new one that fans are so un-fond of? The general agreement is that Burton simply hasn’t got it quite right. There seems to be an imbalance between the darker side of vampirism and witchcraft with the elements of such an Despite Burton’s delicate creation in films such Wonderland he seems missed the mark here

balancing the sinister and humourous. After hearing such negativity I decided to judge for myself and admittedly I can see where the criticism has come from but personally, I enjoyed it. Why do we feel the need to be so critically acclaimed about everything? I agree that some of the sinister elements prove to be a little too much for the film in itself and several sections may be slightly over written but that doesn’t prove that it’s terrible. This film is another mark on Burton’s career timeline that proves him and Depp are an unbeatable team. The introduction to Dark Shadows was almost a little too much for a dark comedy and yet the moment Depp’s character made his entrance, the atmosphere changed completely. It was clearly written to play to Depp’s strengths. Although saying that, the same negativity follows every film that is released and Burton is no exception. The shock of the originality and then the need to pick fault. Edward Scissorhands proved to be similar in this aspect of his career. On the one hand are the fans that appreciate the ingenuity and on the other is the doubt and criticism of his characterisation and pot holes. What does it take to make a perfect film? Spielberg may be one of the only names to pull it off but Burton clearly knows what he’s doing. Old vs. new? I’d say it’s more of the time it takes for the fan base to appreciate his new masterpiece. Burton has done what we can only imagine and he brings that imagination to life beautifully, why criticise what he does when he does it so well? You either love him or you hate him and yes this last one may have been a bit dark and gloopy but isn’t that what we love most about Marmite?

ParaNorman

P

araNorman is the second stop-motion animation movie from Laika, the American team that brought us ‘Coraline’ back in 2009. The new movie is equally as gorgeously made but be warned it is undeniably not one for those timid kids out there. For example the opening scene has Norman watching a certain zombie movie where a blonde girl running for her life from a hoard of zombies spikes a human brain using her 6 inch stiletto heel… that the scene set for the rest of the movie.

GGG

The basis of the movie is Norman, or AbNorman to his school ‘chums’, can see ghosts and his dad fears his son’s attraction with these dark as they might lead to his son getting into ‘limp-wristed hippy stuff’. The plot, for me anyway, seems to lag a little but on the plus side there is an abundant supply of moaning zombies on the loose to keep us horror fans happy and the writers really do well with the script comically and there are some wonderful funnies sprinkled throughout.

F

ilmed in a classic ‘creature features’ fashion Hotel Transylvania features the voice overs from the likes of Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, David Spade, Jon Lovitz, Cee Lo Green, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon and Selena Gomez. Although not a 5 star outing the movie is a pretty neat comedy that does carry a few chuckles along the way. The basis of the movie is that Dracula opens a hotel resort with the aim of giving monsters a safe place to be ‘themselves’. Each year the hotel opens at the same time as Dracula’s big event, his young daughter Mavis’ birthday celebrations. At this year’s event a human arrives at the party and things spiral out control from then on. Characters appear at breakneck speed and lots of the action is carried out using the same momentum. It’s a very pacey movie and I suppose best aimed at a modern generation hooked on tv and video games with a very short attention

span. Across the board it may be something that isn’t new and perhaps it’s been seen before but there is a feeling of enjoyment in the manner used to get those ideas on to the screen. The animation crew who have created the Hotel Transylvania world have to take a massive pat on the back having stretched the animation process to breaking point. The background sets and castle itself are simply amazing while the characters have a very up-to-date feel about them. Fans of the older Universal monsters will, I’m sure, enjoy spotting their favourite creature from previous movies on screen, and the obvious funny one liners that go hand in hand with that. To sum the movie up it’s a fault in my opinion that it has defo been targeted at a purely young teen audience and lacks any real humour for anyone else. But if you are in that young teen audience then get yourself along to see it.

A Night In The Wood panic.

Cameraman Brody films all the footage, the contorted trees, the desolate clearings, the bizarre apparitions etc. Director Parry does manage to get some edgy tension between the camping characters and they manage a decent job of appearing properly scared.

Using this experience Parry wrote the story of this movie which tracks our three central characters on an unwise camping trip. The threesome, made up of cameraman Brody (Monsters’ Scoot McNairy) and his girlfriend Kerry (Anna Skellern) along with her cousin Leo (Andrew Hawley). Eventually paranoia takes over as they begin to feel as if they may not be completely alone in the woods. There are a few of the usual tried and tested horror ‘tick lists’ at play along the way such as strange warnings from locals which don’t put the trio off and they head off into the woods for what inevitably becomes a night of fear and Page 58

Night In The Woods by Richard Parry is set across the unfriendly and surroundings of Dartmoor and was apparently inspired by a real-life occurrence that happened to the director while he was out camping in Wistman’s Woods. Parry seemingly awoke feeling a hand pressing round his throat and a dark figure standing over him, a well-known event that regularly happens to folk who camp there he later discovers.

However, it’s a ‘found footage’ format that doesn’t truly come off for me and to be honest the characters are not really that engaging and you never really feel for them too much. The ending doesn’t offer anything really new on anything we haven’t seen before in other outings like Blair Witch.

creepier, moths somehow decide to infest the house. Eventually Clyde tosses the box away and Em goes mental which forces them to call in the exorcist. Strangely it is not your typical Catholic priest that they call in but instead they employ Tzadok (Jewish reggae/rap star Matisyahu) to help them out.

T

HE POSSESSION is a kind of clever horror yarn surrounding demonic possession that is pretty successful in producing something with an original twist and some characters that an audience may truly feel a little compassion for. It’s definitely a movie that will leave you thinking ‘that was better than I expected’ Divorcee Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has just bought a new house in an abandoned housing scheme. He is a basketball coach and tries to be a caring father but is a little laidback about how to bring up his daughters Hannah (Madison Davenport) and Em (Natasha Calis) as they shuttle back-and-forth between him and their mother Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick) who attempts to lay down some ground rules for them.

They find out that Em is possessed not only by a demon but by a ‘Dybbuk’ which is a demon from Jewish folklore. Tzadok, Clyde and the rest of the family are forced to face down the demon and it is pretty scary and creepy. The fact that it is not the usual Catholic possession story being told here should be enough to make “The Possession” one for the watching, but the fact that most people will actually find the characters endearing will make this a little more successful. Morgan’s portrayal is pretty good as Clyde and we see him as a caring person to both his players and to his kids. Sedgwick walks a fine line as the mother and ex-wife, on occasions insensitive but never becoming totally uncaring. Stand outs for me are Calis as the possessed girl and comparisons with Linda Blair in “The Exorcist” would certainly not go amiss. The Possession is a sturdy horror movie that doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t and does come up with a good few surprises.

zombie movie with plenty of gore to keep you happy if that’s what you’re after, of course all done with a well thought out comic slant.

Using a largely unknowns the cast pull off strong performances with Michelle Ryan and Alan Ford standing out as ones to watch in the future. Cockneys vs. Zombies is a well-crafted movie that you won’t be disappointed with if viewed in the correct frame of mind, and that frame of mind is that it’s just a bit of ‘gore and fun’.

ockneys vs. Zombies is a movie that turns out to be a good bit better than its title initially suggests. It brings us a riotously enjoyable British zombie flick that rides the zombie genre with a good dose of humour and ample amounts of obligatory gore and all based throughout the London’s East End.

Page 60

James Moran manages to bring some much needed life back into this area of the horror/ zombie genre, it moves along at a good pace, delivers an abundance of gags, cockney jibes and ‘slaps in the face’. Add to this the fact that Cockneys also brings you a pretty effective

When brothers Terry (Rasmus Hardiker) and Andy (Harry Treadaway) hit on the idea of robbing a bank to ensure they can look after Ray, their dear old granddad, played by Alan Ford, they end up with much more than they can handle when they finally make their escape. They, their sexy cousin (Michelle Ryan), a psychopath, and two bank employees emerge to find that East London has been engulfed in a zombie plague. The action follows them as they attempt to reach the nursing home to save Ray and their eventual attempt to escape from their unfolding nightmare.

this very well and there doesn’t ever seem to be a time when you truly know what is in store. It is only over time that V/H/S will potentially earn its place in a long list of truly epic horrors but it is at least going in the right direction. So what does this pretender to the horror throne actually bring to the table? Well initially we open with a gang breaking into a house to find and retrieve a video cassette. The stories are kicked off as their rifling leads to various “Play” buttons being pushed. We won’t go into the stories as we don’t want to waste that for you but they involve A gang of young men out for a night of partying push a particular girl just a little too far, a plain young couple on a road trip to the Grand Canyon, a slasher, a girl and her boyfriend doing a Skype video chat and the last offering being some party-hungry friends heading out to a Halloween party. As individual short movies all these would probably stand up as great wee pieces of horror entertainment but throw them all together in a mixed up mess of disturbed and gore and you have something a little out of the ordinary.

V/H/S comes from the minds of a diverse group of film makers with Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett (A Horrible Way to Die and You’re Next) to horror wizard Ti West (House of the Devil) along with Joe Swanberg, Glenn McQuaid, David Bruckner and filmmaking collective “Radio Silence.” This motley crew, together with a large number of writers, producers, and actors, put before us a sort of anthology of “found-footage” in the horror scheme of things anyway. Probably the main element for a really good horror is obviously that of surprise. V/H/S does OCT 2012 - issue (22)

he idea is pretty simple with V/H/S, gather together a good few curious ways to put forward the “found footage” (or first-person) genre using interesting methods that have not been thought of, or used so far, by other filmmakers. When this is done correctly it can be massively successful when you look at Blair Witch, .REC and Paranormal Activity. V/H/S kinda gets really really close with its take on things by making a few good stabs at it and doing each one pretty well.

Resident Evil: Retributio

There is usually a long break between the movies although they always seem to end with some kind of cliff hanger. Certainly they are massively better in terms of production etc. than a B movie, but the flavour for me remains with regards to character exploration, cheap thrills and the main goal always seems to be ‘entertainment’ above all else. Resident Evil: Retribution eventually kicks off with the obligaPage 62

Milla Jovovich’s character Alice returns as the woman who can usually kick anyone’s ass, be it male, female or monster. Again Alice lives in the post-apocalyptic world which has been caused by the T virus created and released by the mysterious Umbrella Corporation. It has laid waste to the earth and turned almost all the world’s population into flesh eating zombies (is there any other kind?) Now Umbrella would like nothing more than Alice killed off, Alice just wants them to go away and leave her to try to make sense of the new world they created. Nothing much more needed as far as understanding any plots involved in this move or the overall series. OCT 2012 - issue (22)

So why watch it? Well, it’s for the action involved in the process of Umbrella’s attempts to bump off our would-be heroine and in her attempt to stay alive. It’s the fight scenes, the effects, the tension, the blood and guts… and of course Milla. As we say in Scotland ‘there is nothing to her’ but she still manages to absolutely kick ass in a more than believable fashion. Running around in her wee cat suit, blasting weapons like an expert, performing back flips and kicks without even smudging her makeup or tussling her hair, I don’t know even her scratches and scrapes seem pretty cute to me? I’m not going to go into the whole video game start for the RE series, but basically it all started with the games and Writer/Director Paul W.S. Anderson manages to toss in some characters from the games such as Ada Wong and Leon S. Kennedy. As you would expect the movie ends on a cliff hanger and leaves you with a feeling that a sixth instalment is a pretty sure bet.

GGG

I

t seems like the Resident Evil movies have been around forever and the fact that this is only the fifth movie is surprising to my mind anyway. In the flavour of a modern version, or ‘reboot’, of your typical B-Movie style the Resident Evil series doesn’t hinge on a particularly enthralling storyline.

tory wee run through a “previously on Resident Evil” section. This kinda brings you up to date with the history of the series so far and sets the scene for the latest effort. A good idea to help newbies to the franchise and for me this is a real godsend as I watch that many movies that it’s good to have a wee refresher before the action kicks off. Now don’t get me wrong it’s not that the RE plots are hard to get to grips with, and I bet that some would even argue that there is a deeper meaning to them, but for the most part they are straight down the line entertainment.

House at the End of the Street

H

ouse at the End of the Street is a thriller with a cast of pretty talented actors and an encouraging plot that somehow manages to turn into something completely different. Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games) plays Elissa, who moves to a new town with her mother Sarah (Elisabeth Shue) and they find themselves in a slightly more posh side of town than they are accustomed to. Ding Dong, why is it that they can afford such a swanky new pad? Yep you guessed it, turns out that the rent is so low because they are living next door to the scene of a murder where a deranged young girl killed her parents before running off into the woods never to be seen again. The house is supposed to be empty but when lights begin switching on during the night they discover that Ryan (Max Thieriot), the missing girl’s brother has moved back in having lived away from home for many years.

high school party, where Ryan comes to her rescue, Elissa becomes smitten with him and professes that he’s just misunderstood. Her mother does not really trust Ryan and airs her concerns in a sort of “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” manner a few times. Thieriot is a stand out among the bigger cast and is an absorbing young man who has a knack of turning from a warm and friendly character to a threatening and dangerous one with little more than a fleeting look. For me it’s once you get into the actual nitty gritty of the movie that it starts to fall down a little, despite its rather talented cast. Sure there are a couple of good twists but for the majority it’s just too far to stretch the imagination to let it ‘off the hook’ for its failings. They seem to filter a good part of the badness towards the Elissa character and hopefully House at the End of the Street doesn’t do too much harm to Lawrence’s rising career, but thankfully, unlike Hunger Games, I’m guessing this movie will be the one that is quickly forgotten.

Ryan is treated like an outsider mainly due to his sister becoming a kind of legend as the local boogeyman (or person?) in the years after she disappeared. Local Sheriff Bill Weaver (Gil Bellows), who’s immediately smitten with Sarah, is the only one to give Ryan the benefit of the doubt. there in what could be the coup of this year’s offerings. The 10-part series, made by TNT in the states, brings us bang up to date in the Ewing saga and introduces a new breed of the Ewing family tree with the sons grown up and fighting for their own identity among their family.

Southfork, originally the home of the Ewing’s for all those years, makes a return as the family base and it’s a good sign is that the mature element of the franchise have signed on to provide some of that much needed continuity and to help pull in the die-hard fans from the original show.

The sparks used to fly from my television set every Shown on a Wednesday night, Dallas fans were in awe as the three main upstarts Bobby and JR Ewing and Cliff Barnes, battled it out each week to see who would ultimately come out on top. On the side lines JR’s Mrs, Sue OCT 2012 - issue (22)

days…. and you’re hooked, plain and simple.

The biggest, and most bizarre, storyline of all time was when the Dallas executives wrote off a complete series of the show where Bobby had died at the end one a series, there was a full series where the family came to terms with it, then in the following series Pam woke up Bobby was back and the whole series put across as a Pam’s dream.

Sue Ellen returns as a divorcee, having finally escaped JR’s clutches, and as a powerful businesswoman in her own right. No longer an alcoholic doormat her character hints at someone who will continue to hinder JR’s dubious business movements and hints at a rekindling of that crazy chemistry they used to have together.

The millions of worldwide fans from back in the 1980s will recall John Ross and Christopher Ewing starting to show elements of their fathers (real or otherwise) when they were just children. In 2012 it appears that they will play the main parts as the reboot develops over the next few series as they appear all grown up seemingly keeping the feuds began by their fathers. Tagging along is their obviously super sexy girlfriends.

This time around the reboot is written by a woman and it does seem to have a more contemporary feel without losing any of the things that the original series’ had to draw us all deep into the sparkling but murky world of the Ewings.

The new breed with Jesse Metcalfe as Christopher Ewing and Josh Henderson (not sure about this one) as the strangely Panto, goatee beard-stroking, John Ross kick off probably exactly where Bobby and JR left off, battling it out over oil and women. Jordana Brewster and Julie Gonzalo (Rebecca Sutter) play the brothers love interests and you can guess even so early into the show that there is a good chance there will be some bed hopping involved at some point.

On viewing the first episode Patrick Duffy (Bobby Ewing) looks amazing and you would never guess that so many years have passed since Dallas ended. Linda Gray (Sue Ellen) has aged stylishly and looks marvellous. Larry Hagman (JR) is JR, I don’t think Page 74

So for a wee recap how did Season 1 Episode 1 go for new Dallas?

Sutter weds Christopher at the end of episode 1, but the fact that her "parents died in a plane crash" and the fact that this is ‘Dallas’ hints that there's something just not right here?

Larry Hagman's JR pretty much steals the show in opening episode with his transformation across 1 hour from bumbling depressed basket case to a manipulative controlling hard faced power hungry Texan oil man. In the end he seamlessly represents the spirit of the original show and in every line he utters he takes you back to those better

Jordana plays Elena Ramos, John Ross’ love interest. BUT…. She used to be the girlfriend of Christopher and it’s blatantly obvious that she still loves him. When she was with Christopher they were supposed to get married but she ran away after getting an email from him saying that he couldn't go through with it. We learn in this episode that,

OCT 2012 - issue (22)

you’ve guessed it, the email wasn’t from Christopher and this leads to our first real showdown between the brothers. The central plot in this series looks to be the battle between old fashioned fossil fuel v’s alternative energies or is it Christopher v’s John Ross or Bobby v JR… ???? It’s a battle whoever its involving. So some of the main elements in the show…. John Ross has gone against the wishes of Bobby (the custodian of Southfork) and has struck oil on the ranch even though there was never to be any drilling on the ranch.

“Bobby may not be stupid but I’m a hell of a lot smarter.” JR Ewing

Christopher married Rebecca, who doesn’t quite seem to be all they appear to be. Bobby is battling cancer. He is trying to keep it from his wife Ann (Brenda Strong) but she finds his medication and finds out through the internet what it is treatment for. Chris gets news that his alternative fuel may be causing earthquakes. Bobby decides to sell Southfork to fund Chris’ venture. John Ross is plotting against Chris, JR is plotting against Bobby. John Ross is plotting against JR. Sue Ellen is plotting against them both? Rebecca is plotting against Chris…. Its DALLAS and everyone is plotting against everyone else… its BACK…!!!!!

am so excited by the upcoming release of the newly polished print of The Curse of Frankenstein on blu-ray. I actually went out and bought a bluray player. This is the film that started the British Gothic horror film revolution led by Hammer in the 60s. Without this there would be no Christopher Lee as Dracula, no Oliver Reed as a blonde werewolf. Actually the amount of things we’d be missing doesn’t even bear thinking about. The film is directed by the master Terence Fisher, stars Peter Cushing as Frankenstein (which he continued to do in 6 other films) and Christopher Lee as the creature. It follows the classic story of a mans best intentions gone wrong. Now I can’t review the blu-ray, it’s not out yet. I have however seen the film many times and it’s clear to see why this was the first of many. It’s about as perfect as a horror film can get. From what I hear the new print is out of this world. It is also the first time we’ve been able to see it in 1.37:1. Geeksplosion.

Also on this blu-ray we have a wealth of extras, including the outstanding film Four Sided Triangle, another aspect ratio, new audio commentary, a making of documentary, and a documentary on Peter Cushing to name but a few of them. I’m as shocked as you are. Seriously though it sounds like the recipe for my worst movie moment of the year, but somehow pulls it out the bag. The film is shot to look like it’s done in one continuous shot, which makes everything feel really claustrophobic and tense. It follows the remarkably talented Elizabeth Olsen around a house she’s helping her dad and uncle pack up. In classic horror fashion they’re not alone. It doesn’t rely on huge special effects to get the scares or build the tension, it’s all on film. I think that’s why it works so well. At no point does a computer generated thing jump out at you and totally remove you from the tense space the film tries to create. Too many horror films are ruined by a sudden ridiculous moment of computer generated madness these days. In saying that, don’t rush out and buy it. ext up is the directorial debut from legend Michael Biehn. The Victim follows a stripper as she runs away from a couple of cops after one of them kills her friend (scream queen favourite Danielle Harris) whilst taking her from behind... Yep it’s that kind of film. Anyway she finds Michael Beihns house deep in the woods and takes refuge there while the cops hunt her down. For a low budget horror/thriller it’s alarmingly good. You can tell it’s a debut, mainly due to the crazy long car going through the woods montage. I mean it just goes on and on. But apart from that the acting and script are pretty solid. It’s the kind of film you’d find on the horror channel at two in the morning. Not in a bad way, you’d see it and wonder why the hell you’d never heard of it before. Let’s face it though, if you put Danielle Harris on the cover of a DVD, I’m gonna buy it. She’s one of the few modern day scream queens out there and her body of work is outstanding. Add the Beihn and it’s an instant classic in the low budget horror/thriller market. It’s far too enjoyable to miss out on. Get it, get it now.

his film was recommended to me by a guy who owned a tattoo studio in Glasgow. We got into talking about horror films. He turned round with a glint in his eye and said “Have you seen Martyrs?” What followed was a five minute conversation about this being the most messed up film the guy had ever seen. So clearly I had to rush out and buy it. The film begins with a young girl running away from an abattoir where she has been tortured and abused. You have no idea who did it or why. You then follow the girl as she goes after the people she believes did this to her. This sequence is masterfully done because at no point are you sure these people are to blame. Events then happen in the film, which turn everything on its head. I could go into it but I’d hate to ruin one of the best horror films of the last decade. What I do however have to say is that no matter how messed up things get, you have to watch the film to the end. Don’t get me wrong it’s not A Serbian Film messed up, but it does do a number on you. By the end of the film I couldn’t move, I just sat there for five minutes to take it all in. This film reinvigorated my love of horror. It also led me to rush out buy six other French horror films.

This is possibly the best horror film to come out in the last decade. I don’t know what the hell happened in France, but there’s some messed up stuff coming out of there right now. And don’t tell me you don’t do subtitles. That’s what stupid people say when they’re happy with Hollywoodland feeding them the same films year after year. So put down your remake that’s hell bent on destroying a classic and fall in love with horror again.

eeping on the theme of horror comes from a developer that has made a name from themselves by perfecting the horror game genre, Fictional Games. A big hit with face reactions on YouTube Amnesia: The Dark Descent really brings back the feeling of a terrifying experience with a dark horrifying puzzling horror game. The game starts by awaking as protagonist Daniel in a castle, later revealed as Brennenburg Castle and is suffering from amnesia therefore unable to recollect any part of his memory and

through collecting journals that you have left behind before losing your memory for you to find now. And through these journals your missions appear and explain that a dark entity is after and there is no way to fight but only run from it. The gameplay is Amnesia works considerably well and the mechanics help out a lot. You can interact with a number of objects throughout the environment including boxes, cabinets, closets, tables, doors etc. The opening and closing mechanics work brilliantly, because you never know what waiting for you in the next room or if the area is clear exit from hiding, so by clicking doors and scrolling the mouse button back and forward will make the door open and close making it available for you to pry open doors and peek through the gap or slam the door as quick as possible

REVIEWS Throughout the game there are no weapons to use, to survive you must hide from the dark creatures that hunt you down, from hiding in the shadows to hiding in the closets (solid snake style). Also to survive you must keep your humanity high, to do this you must find light sources and solve puzzles. To lose your humanity is the easiest part, whenever you witness a strange, paranormal like event or look at the creatures that hunt you or even spend too long in the dark will decrease you humanity. So keep light source nearby or use your lantern that you acquire early on in the game but keep in mind the light source will expose you to enemies. Staying in the dark to long will result in Daniel’s vision looking like he’s been drinking a bit much, you begin to hear eerie noises, the sound of swarms of insects crawling around you and even visually crawling on your face. There’s a whimpering dog noise that always gets me and freaks me out.

Page 90

There are puzzles throughout the game that are required to complete to progress, there not the hardest but will have you out your thinking caps for a good while. Exploring the castle is almost reminiscent to the times when first exploring the mansion in the original Resident Evil or the harrowing buildings of Silent Hill. Amnesia: The Dark Descent has everything a good horror game needs and pulled the game off extremely well. It’s hard to find faults with the game, I’m too busy solving puzzles or running for my life.

f you haven’t yet heard of the Slender: The Eight Pages (also known as Slender), what you must know is that it’s taking the internet and horror scene by storm. There are countless videos on YouTube of player’s reactions from playing Slender and their reactions get you energized to play what is probably the new king of jumpscare of games. Slender is a free indie-developed downloadable game for the PC created by Parsec Productions. Could this be what horror game enthusiasts have been waiting for and lies within indie-developed free game? The objective of the game is to collect 8 pages attached to various landmarks that are scattered across a forest at night. Players can explore the forest freely or follow a dirt path that leads to landmarks. The forest

is enclosed by a fence so escape isn’t an option, the only way to complete the game is to collect all 8 pages. There are also alternative endings depending on what version you play. The controls are simple and easy to use, the player is given a flashlight which can run out of power if not conserved so you are given the ability to turn off the flashlight which makes the game pitch black and a lot harder to play. Also a new ability to zoom in and out was added to later versions to further emphasize the player using a camera and according to Slenderman mythology that is the only way to see him. The player can also jog for a short period of time before recovering. The antagonist of the game is

Page 94

Slenderman, a creature with dark, misty defined features and abilities that stalks you and grows more persistent and relentless as each page is collected, you can’t fight Slenderman nor can you even look at him for long. Once the first page is collected the spine chilling music starts that only makes the atmosphere more terrifying and gets worse as the pace quickens when more pages are collected. In modern times Slenderman appears wearing a black or grey suit with a black or red tie and a white shirt, it has no face at all and is depicted in writings and pictures to be 6 to 15ft tall and can sprout black tentacles, which are passed on into the game. Plus Slenderman has the ability of teleportation which is how he gets you flying out of your chair most of the time.

Slender simply throws you into the deep end of fear that very few horror games do now and gives of the long lost sensation that we have been looking for in horror games .The game received so much popularity that the official website crashed after a swarm of people tried to download the game. There is set to be a sequel the Slender: The Eight Pages called Slender: The Arrival which will be developed by ParsecProductions and Blue Isle Studios, currently there is no release date but based on the website you can see better visuals and can expect more levels and a horrifying storyline.

on the lives of another group in the Waking Dead universe. You take control of Lee, with a troubled past and now having to deal with a zombie apocalypse you will have to react and make some of the difficult

decisions that will not just affect you but the others around you. The game is based on Robert Kirkman’s award-winning comic book series. Taking control of escaped convict Lee Everett, Lee befriends and becomes a protector and father figure to a little girl

named Clementine. The first episode serves as a sort of get to know episode, with a lot of story-driven conversations with consequences that stay throughout the episodes, even the slightest decision can alter the outcome in other situations later and in other episodes. The voice acting is faultless for Lee while some other character voices may seem a tad off but overall doesn’t affect the atmosphere that much. some of the most difficult decisions that you would find in a zombie apocalypse. Gameplay isn’t complicated and is basically point and click to find solutions and learn about the area and quick time button pressing and reacting similar to Heavy Rain. Some conversations have a very short time limit to allow you to put your opinion so being quick is required at

nearly all situations. So far there are three episode’s released The Walking Dead with the 4th episode set to be released later in October and with each episode better than the rest you can be sure episode 4 will be as breathtaking and horrifying as the others. CLASSIC MOVIE POSTERS 101

O

cean’s 11 is a 1960 heist film directed by Lewis Milestone and starring five Rat Packers: Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Joey Bishop. A gang of World War II 82nd Airborne veterans are recruited by Danny Ocean (Sinatra) and Jimmy Foster (Lawford) to rob five different Las Vegas casinos (Sahara, Riviera, Desert Inn, Sands, and The Flamingo) on a single night. Peter Lawford was first told of the basic story of the film by director Gilbert Kay who had heard the idea from a gas station attendant. Lawford eventually bought the rights in 1958 imagining William Holden in the lead. Sinatra became interested in the idea and a variety of different writers worked on the project. When Lawford first told Sinatra of the story, Sinatra joked “Forget the movie, let’s pull the job!” The opening animated title sequence was designed by Saul Bass. The closing shot shows the main cast walking away from the funeral home, with a marquee behind them listing their names as headliners. A successful series of remakes was kicked off in 2001. Page 116
