DSSRIP? W

hen we planned this year’s Grassroots live event there was one name that came to everyone’s lips and was first on the sheet to headline the event and that was Dead Sea Souls. Unfortunately due to other commitments the guys couldn’t play and needless to say they were firmly pencilled in for future events. However this week the guys decided to hit us for 6 by announcing that they were taking a proverbial ‘sabatical’ from the band to allow members Colin and James to pursue a few things out with the band, mainly traveling and uni. The remaining members decided that it wasn’t right for these members to be temporarily replaced until they returned so have decided to put things on the back burner for now and pick things up sometime in the future… now I’m a wee bit of a pessimist so I worry now that we might just have seen the last of DSS…? “At the end of 2013 Dead Sea Souls will go into hibernation. Colin has succumb to the temptation of foreign adventures and is heading to New Zealand for a short while with his good lady Angela and James

Page 6

has bucked the trend by returning to University to pursue the no small feat of finally securing his Pharmacy Degree. Two member of our little micro family will be leaving us for a while and they will be sorely missed during their absence. We have no plans to 'replace' Colin or James in any way shape or form. The idea of replacing a member of the band on a permanent basis would feel too much like subbing one of your kids! So instead, we decided to go out with the biggest f*cking bang we could muster.........” DSS via their Facebook page this week In a thank you to their huge fan base that have followed them over the years the band have lined up a final mini tour with 3 shows across Scotland ending with a homecoming show in Bathgate at the end of the year. Those dates are: Friday 29 November @ Stereo Glasgow (+14s) Sunday 1 December @ Electric Circus Edinburgh (+14s) Friday 6th December @ Special Homecoming & Final Show Chalmers Bathgate (+18s) Having worked with the guys many many times over the past 10 years I must say I’m actually devastated by the news and can only wish them all the best for the future since this may be the last time I actually write something about them, fingers crossed though.

Just hours after putting their final show on sale, a Bathgate band were forced to upgrade to a bigger venue due to incredibly high de mand and fears of overcrowding. Tickets for Dead Sea Souls’ “Forever Electric Tour” were rel eased online last Friday morning, after the band announced they would be parti ng ways via their blog. But by early afterno on the hometown Foundry show had sold out, and fans took to social media to vent their disappointment at missing out, claiming they would be trying to get in anyway. However thinking from the ba nd’s management got the sho w moved quickly. “It’s crazy!” says singer Gary Burns, “We expected a few peo ple to get their tickets early, but demand just shot through the roof, luckily our manager was straight on the phone and we managed to sort something.” By Friday evening, the band who have been together for 8 years announced on their Facebook th at the show had been moved to the main hall at Chalmers nightclub, put ting more briefs on sale for th e 6th December bash. The tour, which also includes Glasgow’s Stereo and Electric Circus in Edinburgh, will be the last of a long line of dates, which ha s seen the 4-piece travel the country, sup porting The View, Ocean Colou r Scene and Glasvegas along the way. Writing on their blog, the band paid tribute to their followers – “We don’t have fans; we have a massive network of friends who support everything we do. That will be hardest thing to say goodbye to”. Although ‘DSS’ are keeping tight-lipped about sur prises for the tour, they have promised it will be one to remember. “Everything will be poured into these final shows”, said Gary, “and they WILL be the best shows we have ever played !”

Tickets for the show are on sale now from www.ticketmast er.co.uk Or in Bathgate from Nautica or Ch almers.”…. DSS

In 2012 the bands saw all their hard work come to fruition when they released of their debut full length album in ‘We Were Always Electric’ and if anything can sum up the album it’s simply one word… MASTERPIECE.

It simply has everything you could ever wish for in an indie pop record and the only real two negative things I can find to say about it are: A: You can’t pick it up in HMV shelves all over Britain. and B: It isn’t playing on Radio one at 8am every single bloody day of the week.

Dead Sea Souls have bags more passion, hooks and proper songs than 90% of the artists in the top 40 just now and on top of all that they are an amazing live band that give their all for their music. The latest release from the guys back in March showed just how good the guys were getting at this song writing malarkey and promised a bright future for all the DSS’ers out there.

Mr

Last year we spoke to the band at length about music and stuff and the video interview can be found on our YouTube channel here… www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3OvNAoI_34

It’s a sad sad day, but let’s rejoice in the fact that we got every single one of their best tracks all together in a nice wee blue bundle of CD magic, some cracking videos and a nice we insight into the goings on within the band to help us through until the guys decide what they wanna do.

WE WERE ALW Good Luck guys and hopefully see you soon.

cottish hardcore-punk band ‘Horrors That You’ve Seen’ are a sludge doom outfit committed to partying. Their new 4 track offering entitled ‘Smokin’, Skatin’ Satan’ was released last June after being recorded in Glasgow at ‘How to make sushi’ recording in ‘Old Mill Studio’. The songs have such light-hearted and poetic names as ‘Rot and Decay’ and ‘Nuclear Bong’ and are a mix of aggressive, in your face screaming vocals and crunching, stomping music. The album was released through local record label ‘Made in the Meth Lab records’ and in true retro/hip fashion, has been released on Cassette. (For those of you too young to know, a cassette is a box with a tape in it containing analogue music. It is neither digital, nor an app). Whether anyone owns a cassette player anymore is a matter of debate, but both of their full albums are available for free download because they’re such generous guys.

‘Horrors That You’ve Seen’ first broke into the scene by signing with Edinburgh based record label ‘Dead Dead Dead Music’ to release their first album ‘Breaking Hearts’, and since then, their energetic, straight-up hardcore style has been widely noticed, scoring them gigs all over the country, as well as a few free pizzas. If you like your thrash hard and heavy, check out these militant stoner grinders on bandcamp. Words by Christopher Jordan for GoGuide Magazine Contributor

AELIA I

AELIA

n this day of scrupulous global modernization in all aspects of man and nature, none scratch the surface of the future of Scottish metal more than brand new tech-Djent outfit ‘Aelia’. Using a unique combination of rhythmic madness, professional grade engineering and soaring vocals, this group have taken their years of musical expertise and worked to create something both impressive and pleasant to hear. They’re almost as if Periphery were to passionately screw Jeff Loomis with a guitar, birth a Dream Theatre from the year 2051 and baptise it in reverb. All that, plus the singer sounds hot.

The band was formed in mid-summer 2013 by former ‘A Machine Divine’ guitarist Scott Gowans. After tinkering for a while with pianist/synthesist Ryan Sheridan to create a unique style and sound, the group completed their line-up by introducing the majoritivly unexplored clean female vocals to the techy epic shreddy plippidy ploppidy djent world. This comes across quite well and it’s good to see girls finally taking their rightful place in the underappreciated, unpaid, sweaty male dominated world of technical shred metal. Guitarist Scott comments on ‘Aelia’ as, “An unlikely recipe for contemporary metal, yet this efficient machine pleases.”

The band have described their sound as “Spectacular”, “Unobtainable to many others” and “Masterful”, just like me in the sack. Still, despite their self-proclaimed ‘mastery’ of metal (which is like being the overlord of juggling, i.e. fun but useless), there’s no doubt that ‘Aelia’ have carved themselves a grand place in the Scottish music scene which desperately needed to be filled.

Preparation and cooking times Prep time: 10 mins Cook time: 35 mins Serves 4-6

Image @ tesco.com

Slowly heat until the sausages just start to brown and the onions go a wee bit soft. Throw all the remaining stuff into the pan, cover it, turn the heat down to a low heat and simmer for about 30 minutes. Serve in a bowl with big chunky bits of crusty or toasted bread or rolls. DESERT

KILLER TOFFEE APPLES Preparation and cooking times Prep time: 0 mins Cook time: 10 mins

Ingredients

feathersandgracie.wordpress.com

8 Granny Smith apples 400g (14oz) Golden Caster Sugar 100ml (4oz) Water 4 tbs Golden Syrup 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon 1 tsp White Wine Vinegar Serves 8 (obviously)

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... To start throw your apples in a big bowl and cover them with boiling water to get rid of their natural waxy coating, this will help the caramel to stick later. Carefully drain them and dry completely, twist off any stalks as you go. Shove a wooden skewer, lolly stick or a couple of stirrers from your fav coffee shop ;-) halfway into the stalk end of each apple.

When ready get everything easily to hand as you need to work quickly for best results, but do be careful as the mixture will be piping hot. Take your apples by the stick and dip them into the toffee mixture and twist around until well coated, let the excess drip off before moving them to the baking paper to harden. Don’t worry if the mixture starts to get too thick, just heat it up a wee bit again to get it runny again. Leave your toffee to cool completely before eating. For an extra special treat roughly crush half a dozen digestive biscuits in a bowl and dip the apples in the bowl just as they begin to set. In fact

image: chocolatecoveredeverything.wordpress.com

Get a sheet of baking paper and a wire rack and place it on the worktop, as close to the cooker as you can. Grab a pan and throw in the sugar and water and put the gas/ring on to a medium heat. Cook for about 5 mins until all the sugar has dissolved, mix in the golden syrup, Cinnamon and vinegar. If you have a sugar thermometer stick it into the mixture and heat it up to 140°C. For most of us we test the mixture by pouring a little bit into a wee bowl of cold water. When ready it should harden as soon as you drop it in and be brittle and easy to break when you take it out. If it is still pliable, rubbery or squishy, keep boiling it. there is no end to the things you can dip your apples into or sprinkle on them so go for it... chocolate chips, smarties, desert sprinkles... the world is your oyster, or apple as the case may be. Your apples can be kept in a cool dry place for up to 2 days (yeh right, need to make more than 8 then: Ed)

n all those zombie movies and games over the years there is one place you would love to be during a zombie apocalypse... and that’s high up in the sky, away from all those gnashing teeth and grabbing hands… now add to that a big gun to mow them all down and its pretty much all you could ask for. There’s something strangely satisfying about slaughtering a gang of stumbling zombies, it’s fun dishing out a massive dose of death from above though the lens of a thermal camera. The aim of Zombie Gunship is to protect civilians trying to make their way to the bunker you are hovering over, while they are running from the zombie hordes. If even one zombie make it to your bunker, it will go into lockdown mode and it’s Game Over. Kill any more than three civilians and you’ll be in hot water and be pulled from the mission.

Zombie Gunship £0.69 / £0.59 Mr Suit for GoGuide Magazine Contributor

GG Page 54

OCT 2013 - issue (33)

Graphically the zombies and people are simply black and white ants when viewed through your camera. The images are grainy, monochromatic type we’re used to seeing on all those reality cop shows. You can still manage to determine the good guys from the bad and it gets easier to see when you come up against some of the bigger dudes. There are a few guns for you to play with in the chopper with each having different strength rating and damage. They have varying degrees of zoom, but you will always have the same fixed viewpoint from above with your circling helicopter. Zombie Gunship truly comes to life when you crank up the volume and hear just how good your guns sound. The sound designer for this game is the same person who created the gun sounds for Gears of War on the Xbox. It’s a simple throw away game with little replay value but defo one for picking up while you’re waiting for something else to happen.

T

erraria’s landscape is largely generated at random and it’s the very act of exploring that landscape that makes it such an interesting and engrossing game. Sure you can mine away (stop the Minecraft comparisons right there…!!!!) Sure each and every block in your world can be dug up with your pickaxe or maybe blown to bits using bombs and then you can use what your left with in other places to build things; a house, bridge or castle.

You can also craft things with materials scavenged from the many quarries you find. Use your skills to create swords ‘n’ stuff with literally hundreds of items for you to produce, you of course need the right materials and workbench etc. or your out of luck for some things.

Unlike another popular mining game out there, where things tend to be a little less exciting, Terraria is chock full of exciting discoveries for you to get your teeth into. There are the obligatory stashes of goodies for you to find, bunches of foes to defeat, and lots of secrets to uncover. The learning curve can be pretty steep though but you do get a wee helper in the form of Brett, your ‘guide for the day’, who is there to offer largely vague excuses for help. The controls for the game are pretty ropey, movement is sorta sporadic, jumping is clumsy, things that should work invariably don’t and your battles pretty much revert to irate sword-swinging sessions. Nothing is really that intuitive either and I’m guessing most people will be hitting the web for hints ‘n’ tips for this one. Terraria is deep and absorbing and there seems to be no end to the exploration element of the game with something new to find or somewhere new to go and explore apparently around every corner.

e have been led to believe that artificial sweeteners like aspartame are safer & healthier and less likely to cause you to gain weight, as well as better for teeth etc. It is an unfortunate reality that we as consumers have the attitude that if a product is being sold to us, and cleared by ‘studies’, that it must be safe. That the government and big businesses wouldn’t risk our health by giving us something that could potentially harm us. But they can and they do. Though in some cases, such as tobacco, they warn us in big black letters on the side of packets that ‘smoking kills’ it does not stop the government and tobacco giants selling this poisonous product to us. It’s left up to us to decide to play Russian Roulette

with our health. A slightly more recent product, artificial sweetener, has been offered to us as a healthy option. No, or low calorie sweeteners, are supposed to help with the obesity epidemic. Look around you….what do you think? Slick marketing of products containing aspartame by giants in the food industry -especially marketing that sends the message it’s healthy to consume these products -might be giving you a false sense of security. You might even be convinced you’re doing the right thing for your health and the health of your family by using products artificially sweetened with aspartame. You couldn’t be more mistaken. It’s not pleasant to learn that corporations, government-sponsored regulatory agencies and politicians are more interested in lining their pockets than protecting your health. OCT 2013 - issue (33)

Manufacturers, marketers and others with financial interests have successfully convinced millions of consumers the chemicals used in artificially sweetened products are safe. If you’re consuming a food or beverage created in a lab instead of by nature, you can be assured your body doesn’t recognize it. This opens the door to short-term and longlasting health problems for all that consume it. If you already avoid aspartame, the information you’re about to read will confirm the wise choice you’ve made, and cement your resolve to stay away from any product that contains this potential toxin.

An Accident Waiting to Happen: The Birth of Aspartame Aspartame was discovered in 1965 entirely by mistake. G.D. Searle chemist James M.

Schlatter was at work in his laboratory developing a drug to treat peptic ulcer disease. The story goes that Schlatter accidentally spilled one of the chemicals he was using onto his finger. He licked his finger clean, and in doing so discovered the sweet taste of the aspartame he had spilled. How Aspartame Got to Market in Spite of Itself The tale of how aspartame got to market is a disturbing one. The approval process for aspartame was said to have been riddled with scandal, bribes and other shady dealings within the pharmaceutical industry, large American corporations, and the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA). Initially, the FDA strongly denied the approval of aspartame products. Reasons given were sound and included: • Flawed data • Brain tumor findings in animal studies • Lack of studies on humans to determine longer-term effects How aspartame got to market despite initial FDA concerns, and evidence of its neurotoxicity is a study in good timing, heavy financial investment, and the impact of political clout. Timing is Everything Aspartame studies were on the rise just after cyclamate (another artificial sweetener) was pulled from the U.S. market and saccharin was under serious scrutiny. At the time of the cyclamate ban, the “diet” market was a $1 billion dollar per year business in the U.S. and around the world. Manufacturers of diet

products were in a mad scramble to find a substitute product. Pouring Good Money Into Bad Studies

first formal objections to the approval of aspartame. Their petition prompted the FDA to initiate investigations into Searle’s lab practices.

G.D. Searle spent tens of millions of dollars to conduct the necessary approval tests on aspartame. Not surprisingly, studies funded by Searle and other groups with a financial interest in aspartame found no adverse health effects. However, independent studies delivered evidence that aspartame consumption did indeed create health problems in test subjects.

The investigations ultimately led to concerns within the FDA about the validity of the studies submitted by Searle. Investigators uncovered substandard testing procedures and manipulated test data. In fact, what investigators found at Searle was an unprecedented incidence of bad testing procedures and inaccurate results. Final approval of aspartame was delayed.

Flexing Political Muscle

Based on the results of these findings, in January 1977, for the first time in history, the FDA requested a criminal investigation into a food manufacturer for willfully misrepresenting results in their safety tests of a product. The FDA asked the U.S. Attorney’s office to examine Searle’s handling of aspartame testing.

In addition to its enormous financial investment in favorable study results, Searle developed what can be fairly described as a diabolical political strategy to insure the FDA would end up with a positive view of aspartame. Deceptive Safety Studies G.D. Searle provided the FDA with over 100 aspartame studies in early 1973. Later that same year, the FDA asked for additional studies. Searle complied, and in June 1974, the FDA granted preliminary approval for the restricted use of aspartame.

In August 1977, the FDA published a report by Jerome Bressler which pointed to specific issues with Searle’s aspartame safety studies. The

The study findings submitted by Searle were immediately challenged by Dr. John Olney, a neuroscientist who was instrumental in getting monosodium glutamate removed from baby foods, and Jim Turner, an attorney and consumer advocate. In August 1974, Olney and Turner filed the OCT 2013 - issue (33)

Bressler Report revealed stunning examples of very bad research. A few examples included: • Deceased lab animals were not immediately autopsied, some not for an entire year after death. Decomposition rendered any data from them inaccurate. • Tumors found in lab animals were reportedly cut out and thrown away. • Animals from whom tumors were removed were labeled “normal,” and obvious tumors were deemed to be “normal swelling.” In 1979, the FDA established a Public Board of Inquiry (PBOI) to rule on safety issues with aspartame, with the result that NutraSweet would not receive final approval pending further investigation into its link to brain tumors in animals. Here’s a list of the top most dangerous artificial sweeteners, along with information about what’s in them and the negative impact they can have on your health. From most dangerous to least: 1. Aspartame What’s in it: Phenylalanine, aspartic acid and methanol. Reported side effects: Headaches, fibromyalgia, anxiety, memory loss, arthritis, abdominal pain, nausea, depression, heart palpitations, irritable bowel syndrome, seizures, neurological disorders, vision problems, brain tumors and weight gain. Concerns: Phenylalanine and aspartic acid directly impact brain and central nervous system functions; evidence shows they play a role in mood disorders, memory problems and other neurological illnesses. Methanol is converted into formaldehyde when metabolized. Makers of aspartame say methanol and its byproducts are quickly excreted. But research has found measurable amounts of formaldehyde in the livers, kidneys and brains of test subjects after ingestion of aspartame. At high temperatures, phenylalnine breaks down into diketopiperazine (DPK), a known carcinogen. Phenylalnine is especially dangerous for people with the hereditary disease, phenylketonuria. 2. Aceslulfame-K What’s in it: Acesulfame-K is a potassium salt containing methylene chloride, a known

carcinogen. Reported side effects: Long term exposure to methylene chloride can cause nausea, headaches, mood problems, impairment of the liver and kidneys, problems with eyesight and possibly cancer. Acesulfame-K may contribute to hypoglemica. Concerns: Of all artificial sweeteners, acesulfame-K has undergone the least scientific scrutiny. Early studies showed a potential link between the sweetener and development of multiple cancers in laboratory animals. 3. Sucralose What’s in it: Sucralose is a synthetic additive created by chlorinating sugar. Manufacturers say the chlorine in sucralose is no different from that in table salt. Fact: the chemical structure of the chlorine in sucralose is almost the same as that in the now-banned pesticide DDT. Reported side effects: Head and muscle aches, stomach cramps and diarrhea, bladder issues, skin irritation, dizziness and inflammation.

image: rense.com

Concerns: Research has shown sucralose can cause shrinking of the thymus gland, an important immune system regulator, and liver and kidney dysfunction. A recent study by Duke University found sucralose reduces healthy intestinal bacteria, which are needed for proper digestion and can impact the effectiveness of prescription and other drugs. 4. Saccharin What’s in it: Saccharin is a sulfa-based sweetener; its primary ingredient is benzoic sulfimide. Reported side effects: For those with sulfa allergies, saccharin may cause nausea, diarrhea, skin problems or other allergyrelated symptoms. Concerns: Early safety studies of saccharin showed the sweetener caused bladder cancer in rats. The FDA recently lifted the requirement that saccharin be labeled as a probable carcinogen on food packaging. The link between saccharin and bladder cancer has contributed to saccharin being the most investigated of all artificial sweeteners. To date, no connection between saccharin and bladder cancer in humans has been proven.

Aspartame is an intense sweetener, approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar, which has been used in soft drinks and other low-calorie or sugar-free foods throughout the world for more than 25 years. It is also referred to as E951.

W

e as an audience have been treated this last year with regards to good horror films. We’ve survived V/H/S/2, Mama, You’re Next and what could be called James Wan’s masterpiece; The Conjuring. James Wan is a relatively new director, but he has quickly become a master of his craft and undoubtedly made horror his genre. His latest fear-induced heart attack of a film comes in the form of Insidious: Chapter 2 – and if you thought the first instalment was scary, buckle up. James Wan and Leigh Whannell have proven to be a winning combination and have teamed up again to bring us another terrifying instalment in the Insidious narrative. It has done the almost impossible task in the eyes of most audiences – it’s a sequel that is regarded as just as good as or even better than the original. However, I don’t think it does the film justice to call it a sequel, instead I see it as the second half of one long film. The beginning of the film starts exactly where the last one left off (disregarding a 10 minute flashback of Josh as a child), so it’s a perfect continuation of the story, and this film has that in abundance. I’m not saying that the first film was lacking a story - that is not the case, but Insidious: Chapter 2 is more concerned with not only telling a story, but answering a lot of the questions that the first film made audiences ask. Ghostly goings-on in the first film, such as doors opening by themselves, are justified in the second film, so the audience doesn’t feel like they were cheap scare tactics used by the filmmakers – there was a real reason for them doing that. The explanations offered in this film don’t seem like the writers desperately trying to connect the two films somehow in order to validate making a sequel; they are really well thought out connections that lead you to believe that both films really might have been written as one and then broken up. The continuing narrative of the problems going on with Josh since he came back from The Further in the first film is also accompanied by plenty of backstory into the other characters. The film takes time to explain not only more about Josh’s past, but also his

mother’s and even the past and backstory of The Black Bride – the spirit that haunted Josh as an adult and may have followed him back from The Further. With there being so much in the way of story, you may start to wonder if this film should not be categorised as a thriller rather than a horror, as there may not be much room left in the run-time for establishing tension and delivering scares. You’d be wrong. Whilst it’s true that there is a huge focus on the story and explanation, James Wan is still a horror director and has not disappointed his audience. In my opinion, the tension levels have been jacked up for the sequel. Jump scares are ever present and are impressively effective considering most audience members will be not only expecting them, but looking forward to them. But the tension created in some scenes are both beautiful and genius in their simplicity; 15 bodies, sat upright and still and covered in sheets might not sound like a winning recipe for a tense situation on paper, but wait until you experience it. The fearful atmosphere is sustained for the audience by the choice of which spirits to include on-screen. One of the biggest criticisms of the first film was the ‘lipstick-faced demon’; you know the one that looked a little like Darth Maul. It’s not that he wasn’t scary; he was – just not for the audience. From the characters point of view he must have been terrifying, but to audience members he was so surreal and so different in appearance from the other spooks that it took them out of the film a little bit. If he had of remained in the shadows (like in the famous pointing scene) or remained visual only in the form of the drawings, he may have remained truly frightening for all involved, but he seemed to come across as a little too theatrical for a lot of audience members and he disappointed a little bit. Perhaps Wan realised this and that is why he (or nothing like him) appear at all in the second film, or perhaps he wanted to just focus on The Black Bride and that story arc instead – either way, the sequel is better for it. The comic relief from the first film has thankfully been brought back for the second; I’m talking, of course, about Specs and Tucker, the two goofy technical assistants to Elise. They have a much bigger part to play in this film than they did before, mostly because of Elise’s death (from the story’s point of view) but also for the sake of the audience’s heart palpitations. The duo are excellent at relieving some of the tension throughout the film, and believe me you’ll be glad they do, but they don’t go so far as to ruin the atmosphere of the whole film. They provide just enough comedic effect to slow your pulse back down to a normal rhythm before the film relentlessly continues to throw you back into the melee.

Words Victoria Tickle for GoGuide Magazine Contributor

Insidious: Chapter 2 is the kind of sequel every filmmaker wishes they could give to their audiences; it is relevant to the first film in a strong way, it delivers the same experience as the first, and it listened to the criticisms of its predecessor. It is not the best film to come from Wan, that title is currently held by The Conjuring, but it is a very close second. If you are a fan of the first film, you’ll be a fan of the second and it may just exceed the original as it has done for me and many others.

SNOWPIERCER

D

irector Bong Joon-Ho, acclaimed director of The Host (2006), and producer Park ChanWook are ready and geared up with what promises to be another great film in the form of Snowpiercer, which is due for release later this year.

Snowpiercer is a movie adaptation of a French graphic novel called Le Transpercenegie by Jacques Lob and JeanMarc Rochette. This is, by genre definition, a comic book movie but it will be a breath of fresh air compared to the Hollywood blockbuster releases of the past few years. There are no caped crusaders, no skyline airborne battles and not a single strip of lycra to be seen throughout the movie. Snowpiercer is set in a dystopian future on Earth after an experiment to reverse global warming backfires, wiping out a vast majority of the human population. The Snowpiercer itself is a long, large train in which all of the surviving humans reside. It travels around the world, protecting its inhabitants from the extreme environment of the freezing and uninhabitable remains of the world that once was. However, the harsh conditions Page 84

outside the train are nothing compared to the conflict inside of it. Despite the extreme conditions that face the surviving humans all pointing to the common sense solution of banding together and working through a time of strife, there is a volatile atmosphere on board the Snowpiercer. But what could have caused this tension? – The answer is the class system. With the class system as the main antagonist of the movie, this makes the narrative plot of the film have a very political undertone, and Joon-Ho has said that this is to reflect the problems that every country is currently experiencing. Joon-Ho is known for tackling both heavy and controversial subject matter in his films, and there is nothing to suggest that Snowpiercer will be any different, or handled with anything less than the same expertise. After all, this project is something that Joon-Ho has been passionate about for a while since he came across the original graphic novel in 2005. Despite this he has not felt restricted by the original inspirational source, as some characters are noticeable different and JoonHo himself has said that he has put a lot of personal emotion into his adaptation. However he does deny that the personal emotion put into this film stems from his

OCT 2013 - issue (33)

upbringing in Korea, a country known for its political unrest, as some critics have suggested. Although it may be possible to decode a reading of a commentary on the North/South divide within this film, as this has happened before with The Host (2006), Joon-Ho has made it clear that this was not his intention. Instead, he has said that the story is about how the class system and the conflict resulting from it is bred from capitalism.

Snowpiercer has more famous names to it (Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Ed Harris and Song Kang-Ho from The Host) than recent English language, Korean directed films such as Park Chan-Wook’s Stoker (2013) which starred Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode. But it doesn’t have actors that seem - through no fault of their own – gimmicky, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Johnny Knoxville in Kim Jee-Woon’s The Last Stand (2013). Snowpiercer promises to be a highly engaging and entertaining film from director Bong Joon-Ho as he continues this seemingly happening and successful new trend of Korean directors breaking into the English language film market. hen it comes to tecky stuff and inventing things, the late Steve Jobs would probably be hailed as the messiah for a whole bunch of ‘Apple’ people out there. There is no doubt that Mr Jobs was certainly one of the most interesting and important technology people of the past 50 years. Unfortunately though, I can’t say the same about the movie carrying his name. jOBS is a strange one for me, I’m not a fan of Apple, personally I think a lot of people do things and make things fasted, better and with more style than Apple have done. Yeh sure, in the early days they were trailblazers but for most of their history it’s been pretty mediocre and only held together by a massive qty of ‘Apple’ stalwarts that wouldn’t change if their life depended on it. But wait that another story all together, back to the movie. Overall it is a strange one, not really a story of Apple as such, and to be honest not really a biography of Jobs himself, maybe that is why some of the advertising for the movie has the title as jOBS (lowercase i), a wee hint that the movie isn’t really a straightforward biopic as you might expect. It really only skims the surface of the guy, the company and the people around him, maybe a case of less is more would have helped us get more involved in the thing, as it was I really didn’t care one way or another about the man or the company.

Ashton Kutcher, does well to capture the mannerisms and physical oddities of his character but that’s really as deep as it gets and lots of the time the line between Kutcher and Jobs blurred a little for me. Anyone else in the movie is truly only there as a bit part player in much the same way as I thought Lincoln was all about one guy (maybe 2), Jobs is the same. It also seems, rightly or wrongly, to be all about just doing a quick skim across the guys life like one of those exam cram books, yeh, like watching a synopsis … Jobs was a doped up uni student, Jobs smelled, Jobs started a company because he didn’t want to work for anyone else, Jobs didn’t like people, Jobs denied he had a kid, Jobs lost his company…. Yada yada yada. For the most part the story concentrates on telling us about the early years of Apple, the computer company rather than the company responsible for 2 things that are almost synonymous with modern living – the iPhone and the iPad, I’m gonna guess that more people have one of those than all the other Apple products put together, but we don’t cover that in the movie. Gees… I don’t even know anyone with an Apple computer and I’m a Microsoft Certified Professional (sounds good that doesn’t it). For those who perhaps don’t know the Apple story Jobs and some mates started it in 1971 with a few friends in his parents’ California garage. The ideas they (ok Jobs) had were not really radical or different, people had been building computers in their bedrooms for years before them, and other companies were already building machines. The Apple idea was just to take things a few steps further, tweak it a wee bit to make it ‘cool’. Like instead of selling you all the bits to build a computer they built it for you. OCT 2013 - issue (33)

When watching the movie I got the distinct feeling that the overriding thing was that Jobs had all the ideas, all the vision, all the drive, and bar a few ‘guru’ moments everyone seemed shit scared of him and he was eventually kicked out of his own company for almost bankrupting them trying to make his stuff cooler than the other guys. Throughout the film he manages to alienate many of his friend and employees with his demands, we never see any of his family other than a few minutes near the end of the movie. The screenplay was done by newcomer Matt Whiteley who I suppose was working to the ‘skim’ terms of reference for the project as, although managing to mention a good few Apple highlights it really falls short in terms of giving me any real understanding of the guy and the situation. If like me you have a passing curiosity in the story then it’s an interesting watch but I really did want more from something billed as a biog, well it has the dudes name on it. I can’t see this being a popular choice among the general movie going audience as it’s pretty much a yawn fest for anyone other than us old techies who are all shouting out ‘I had one of those’ throughout the movie. There’s a lot more to this story surely? Maybe Jobs 2 in the near future… I wouldn’t bother?

yuhei Kitamura, famed for the very good gorefest Versus, and Englishlanguage debut, The Midnight Meat Train, has brought us his second slick western movie in the bloody thriller No One Lives, and before you ask, yeh… it’s got all the good stuff we want to see in a Kitamura flick.

A seemingly well off couple are taking a road trip and stop off at a typical dingy American diner, they soon find themselves being harassed by a member of a gang who are unfortunately also frequenting the classy eatery. The gang eventually leave but soon meet up with the couple on the road and take them hostage. Just when you thought Page 104

you knew what was going to happen next everything kinda turns on its head and the ‘hunters become the hunted’. Driver, yep that’s all we know about him, played by Luke Evans of Blitz/ Fast & Furious 6 and soon to be Eric Draven in The Crow remake, actually turns out to be a psychopathic killer himself. We are then treated to 60mins of what Kitamura does best, killing people.

It is another movie that you need to remember not to take too seriously and look to close for a story, its gripping enough just waiting for the next victim and Kitamura manages to stage an impressive ‘revenge’ story where you never quite know who is gonna be ok or what will happen next, with the victim roles constantly jumping around from one scene to the next.

Laura Ramsey, Kill the Irishman/ The Ruins is Drivers wife/partner Betty but she isn’t in the movie long and kicks of the killing spree with a unique suicide that send our would be nutcase over the edge. At the same time, back at the gang’s hideout they discover a girl tied up in the couples boot… things are obviously not what they seem. No One Lives is squarely set out to shock, but in a kinda glam, acceptable way if that’s possible? It’s pretty gory and doesn’t take itself seriously.

It’s good at what it does and well worth a viewing from the horror fan or just someone looking for a change from the summer big budget offerings.

ne of the major things I like about really good movies is their ability to draw you in and make you enjoy something you don’t particularly like, I don’t like cars, I don’t like motorsport, so I wasn’t really looking forward to watching Rush at all. How wrong could I have been? Rush is an adrenaline-charged thrill ride centred mainly on the 1976 grand prix season in which British playboy James Hunt and unnervingly focused Austrian Niki Lauda battled head-to-head for the ultimate motorsport prize, the Formula One Championship. Chris Hemsworth (Thor/Avengers/Red Dawn) plays Hunt and Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds/

The Bourne Ultimatum) playing Lauda are pretty damn excellent as the two drivers with completely different styles but who are strangely alike. On one side Hunt is fame hungry, searching for glory, looking for thrills and driving from his heart… he lives in the moment. On the other hand Lauda controls his emotions, is a methodical perfectionist who only wants to be good at driving, that’s all, only driving. The rivalry between the drivers sets the movie up as a really good character based movie, both have an arrogance about them, with egos to match the cars they strap themselves into, they are the same but different, opposites attract and these guys appear to have been complete opposites both attracted to the same thing at least. I suppose being an F1 movie it is almost a given that the movie is going to be scrutinised for its racing scenes and Rush OCT 2013 - issue (33)

really does look pretty good to my eyes. A blend of old fashioned stunt driving and hi-tech CGI is used throughout the action sequences but it’s truly hard to see the join for someone like me. Overall the guys have done a great job in giving the movie an oldie but new look and with all the era-correct scenery and elements all coming together to really capture the feel of the 70’s. Director Ron Howard does a great job in pulling everything together and Rush sets the bar way up high for anyone else thinking about getting behind the wheel and trying to do it better.

So we’ve got some pretty loveable old faces, John Malkovitch and Bruce Willis, being just two in amongst the mix with some new people. Initially a few people have tried and most recently Satanta/ESPN went head to head with the big boys and pretty much failed. ctober this year celebrates the 20th Anniversary of The X-Files and with talk of an X-Files 3 movie rife at the moment we thought it would be a good time to feature one of the biggest and best shows ever to grace our TV screens. For those not in the know… (surely not?) The X-Files was an American show that ran from September 10, 1993 to May 19, 2002 and was created by writer Chris Carter. Spanning no less than nine seasons, a whopping 202 episodes, 2 movies, and 10 seasons of comic books. The series centres on the exploits of FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) who go around investigating X-File cases; the unsolved, unexplained, undiscovered cases that have been shoved into one big filing cabinet in the basement, the X-Files. Mulder believes in pretty much everything, the existence of aliens, ghosts, demons, anything paranormal but at the same time he ain’t no numpty to be taken for a mug. Scully, on the other hand is the yin to Mulders yang, the sceptic, the disbeliever ready to write everything off with a plausible explanation. She is basically assigned to make scientific analyses of anything Mulder discovers, basically to debunk his work. Over time they come to respect and trust each other, developing a close relationship, which begins as a platonic friendship, but there is always something there and you never quite know if anything romantic is going to happen between them…. I won’t tell you if it does or doesn’t as it’s all part of the X-Files story. The X-Files was a hit for the Fox network and became the longest-running science fiction type series in U.S. television history and the show peaked during Season 4’s twelfth episode, ‘Leonard Betts’ which was viewed by an amazing 29.1 million people. The series won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, and Duchovny and Anderson received multiple award nominations with several wins. So what’s all the fuss about, well…. Basically The X-Files laid the ground work for all your modern shows you watch today, it was inspired by classics like The Twilight Zone, and it in turn has inspired a multitude of clones and wannabe shows all trying to do better what The X-Files achieved for all those years. Although being seen primarily as a sci-fi show, due mainly to the running theme of alien abduction and alien colonisation, The X-Files really did have it all and were happy to surprise you each week with stories of not only Aliens but Ghosts, Demons, Serial Killers, Psychopaths, Crime, Forensics, Climate Change, Genetic Mutation, Witchcraft, Cults,

Extrasensory Perception, Religion, Possession, Devil Worship, Vampirism, Human Inbreeding, Past Lives to name but a few… and of course we can’t forget good old Government Conspiracies. Despite having some truly great stories and themes, thanks to brilliant writing from Carter and his crew, there was a certain chemistry between Mulder and Skully that definitely helped keep up your interest in the pair well into the later seasons. The other ancillary characters also helped play a major part in keeping the show popular with some becoming household names like The Smoking Man (or Cancer Man as he was sometimes referred to) and The Lone Gunmen, Deep Throat and Alex Krychek. Mulders office poster also became an icon for a generation. The show’s decline i’m guessing started when Duchovny decided he’s had enough of the show and wanted to explore his ‘movie’ career – which eventually didn’t lead to anything really substantial and the same can be said for Anderson when the show eventually ended with neither of them really setting the movie world alight. There was also the little matter of a lawsuit that he filed against 20th Century Fox after he claimed that they had undersold the rights to its own affiliates, thereby costing him huge sums of money. Eventually, the lawsuit was settled, and Duchovny was awarded a settlement of about $20 million. The lawsuit put strain on Duchovny's professional relationships and he was effectively written out of the show for season seven due to an alien abduction. For season 8-9 he was replaced by the introduction of Agent John Doggett as Skully’s new partner, played by Terminator II’s T9000 legend Robert Patrick. Agent Monica Julieta Reyes played by Annabeth Gish was also added to the regular cast and this is thought to have been a direct result of Anderson possibly not returning to the show full time, although she did actually stay until the show ceased all together after season 9. So with all that out of the way I’m confident that now is the right time for at least a new movie or two and actually, come to think of it, with all the success of recent American crime, killer, thriller, homeland security and demon type shows I really thing now would be the right time for a return to the good old X-Files TV show. Maybe Mulder and Skully head up a now bigger X-Files division, with a couple of newer, younger Agents alongside them to take a lot of the burden off the main stars and bring in the younger viewer… only time will tell… but… well…

I WANT TO BELIEVE…!!!!

05... season 1 episode 13 “Beyond the Sea” Grieving over her father’s sudden death, Scully nonetheless begins investigating a series of abductions and killings. Each murder is predicted by Luther Lee Boggs (Brad Dourif), a Death Row inmate. As Mulder hastens to rescue a kidnapped couple by following the clues provided by Boggs, Scully hopes that the condemned man will be able to contact the spirit of her recently deceased father (Don S. Davis). Written by Glen Morgan and James Wong. First aired in January 1994

04... season 4 episode 3 “Home” The near-idyllic community of Home, PA, is transformed into a bloody killing ground. The catalyst for all the carnage is the Peacock family, a group of inbred, deformed deviants. Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) put their own lives on the line to rescue a young woman who has been kidnapped for the purposes of spawning the latest monstrosity for the Peacock clan. (Inside joke alert: The name of the local law enforcement officer is Andy Taylor.) Written by Glen Morgan and James Wong First aired in October 1996

03... season 2 episode 25 “Anasazi” Right in the thick of the overall X-Files alien ‘mytharc’ Anasazi kicks off a 3 episode tie in when, courtesy of a computer hacker known as The Thinker, Mulder comes into possession of an encrypted diskette which turns out to contain evidence of a wideranging official cover-up of UFO landings. On a more personal note, the evidence on the diskette leads to an uncomfortable reunion between Mulder and his father. Without spoiling the ending, it can be noted that at least one major character vanishes without a trace and this coincides with yet another sinister appearance by the Cigarette Smoking Man. Written by X-Files creator Chris Carter and Duchovny

First aired in May 1995

02... season 3 episode 6 “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose” This classic X-Files episode stars Peter Boyle as the titular Clyde Bruckman, a man “blessed” with the ability to predict how other people die. Mulder and Scully enlist Bruckman’s assistance in solving the murders of several fortune tellers. Bruckman comes to regret his cooperation when he experiences a vision of the murderer’s next victim. Incidentally, Boyle’s character name is something of an inside joke: the “real” Clyde Bruckman was a comedy writer who worked with such notable funsters as Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, and the Three Stooges. 01... season 1 episode 6 “Squeeze” And our number one spot goes to a season one episode, sure there are lots of incredible episodes but this one has simply never been bettered, a classic.

Tipped off by a fellow FBI agent, Scully investigates a series of murders in which the victims’ livers were torn from their bodies. The most perplexing aspect of the case is that all the killings were committed inside otherwise impenetrable rooms. Mulder comes to the conclusion that the culprit is a serial killer who has been active since 1903, and who commits five murders every 30 years. Written by Glen Morgan and James Wong First aired in September 1993

THIS IS A LOCAL SHOP… ‘THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN’ REUNION CON TV FEATURE

T

he League of Gentlemen are back, but so far the TV show is only set for a Royston Vasey cast reunion later this year at the Rocks With Laughter charity show.

Reece Shearsmith dropped a heavy hint about the comedy teams reuniting by tweeting a black and white picture of himself, Steve Pemberton and Mark Gatiss earlier this week. The League of Gentlemen stated life as a hit Radio 4 show before making its way onto BBC2 and running for three series ending in 2002. The League of Gentlemen: Apocalypse movie came out in 2005 but the group have not performed together as 'The League' since they completed 'The League of Gentlemen Are Behind You' theatre run back in 2005. It is good news for fans of the trio that they have pretty much confirmed that Gatiss, Pemberton and Shearsmith will all perform together for the Royal Free Hospital at the Adelphi Theatre in December. The three last notably worked together on awesome black comedy clown story Psychoville and more recently they all joined forces last year to create a series of sketches for CBBC's Horrible Histories. Other comedians confirmed for the event include Rowan Atkinson, Matt Lucas, Harry Enfield, Harry Hill and Mitchell & Webb with tickets for the show going on sale on Monday, October 7 at 9am.

he majority of the inhabitants of the village whether they are male or female are played by the trio of Shearsmith, Pemberton, and Gatiss. The show was written by these three plus Jeremy Dyson. Dyson, who isn’t an actor, appears only in small cameo roles. There are usually only three actors on screen at any one time and the different characters mostly play out their own stories in several serialised sketches, rarely crossing over into each other’s storylines.

There are many strange characters inhabiting the fictional town of Royston Vasey. Some are series regulars and some pop in from time to time for a wee visit. Here is our favs...

D TUBBS AND EDWAR

TATTSYRUP

Tubbs and Edward Tattsyrup run the local shop, set strangely enough miles away from the actual town. They believe themselves to be local run a local shop, for local people, not taking kindly to the ‘tourist’ element.

ONES

-J PAULINE CAMPBELL

Pauline Campbell-Jones, the local Restart officer at the Job Centre doesn’t really like her motley crew of ‘job seekers’ that she is supposed to be helping find work. Her friends are her pens. As horrible as she is, you cannot help but feel sorry for her whenever she’s hurt (probably due to Pemberton’s excellent portrayal). Her dream is to open a pen shop (called “Her Nibs”).

MR CHINNERY

REV. WOODALL

Bernice Woodall is the local priest who doesn’t actually believe much in God and chooses to spend her days getting on at her parishioners.

BARBARA DIXON

TV FEATURE

Barbara Dixon is a transsexual taxi driver who insists on telling anyone who listens about her gender journey in way more detail than necessary

HILARY BRISS

Hilary Briss, “The Demon Butcher of Royston Vasey” is known for serving his Special Choice cuts to a select few customers. You can guess what his choice cuts are made of.

HILARY BRISS

Charlie and Stella Hull, whose marriage is falling apart. They don’t get along very well anymore; in fact any time spent together usually involves seeing who can outdo the other with insults. They rarely speak directly to each other, usually talking through a third party (such as their daughter Julie, her boyfriend Tony, and waiter Luigi). Oddly enough, after each monstrous blowout they go right back to decent behaviour and some sense of normalcy. Deep down they probably still love each other, although they are loathe to admit it.

Page 130

OCT 2013 - issue (33)

HILARY BRISS IRIS KRELL

Judee Levinson and her cleaning lady Iris Krell, who are in a constant mind-battle. Levinson has a grand lifestyle, while Iris has a grand sex life. Judee’s home is practically antiseptic. Daughter Nicola is bulimic and lives in a psychiatric ward. Although we hear Judee talk about her husband Eddy and their glamorous vacations, Eddy actually died many years ago (bankrupt and dead of a heart attack at 42). Although she and Iris appear to love making (often vicious) digs at each other, Iris is actually Judee’s mother.

GEOFF TIPPS

Geoff Tipps, who works in the local plastics company. Geoff likes comedy, but is hopeless at joketelling. His relationship with his workmates Mike Harris and Brian Morgan is shaky, with Brian having a relationship with Geoff’s wife, and Geoff often threatening people with a gun under pressure.

Royston Vasey also has its share of visitors. Benjamin Denton comes to the town on a hiking trip, but his friend is killed by Tubbs and Edward. He is forced to stay with his toad-loving Uncle Harvey and Auntie Val, whose house is managed in an insanely ordered manner, with them being paranoid about germs and masturbation. There is also “Legz Akimbo” theatre company, who perform plays for the area, and whose manager Ollie Plimsolls is often shown to be unsuitable for acting. From abroad, there is Herr Lipp, a homosexual German exchange teacher who has a disturbing and monstrous side. The most evil of all the visitors is Papa Lazarou, a circus ringmaster with a blackface, who calls everybody “Dave” and steals wives.

TV&DVD DVD REVIEWS

T

his is quite possibly the most pointless release of all time. What Three Wolves have decided to do is rerelease a film called Autumn, which is based on a book series by David Moody, under a different name in an attempt to cash in on The Walking Dead. There’s no other explanation for it. It’s a low budget zombie film and the main selling point is its link to the book franchise. So yeah, this makes no sense. Anyway, on with the review.

The film starts off well enough; you are treated to various scenes of people who quickly succumb to some form of virus. Some people however appear to be immune, including Dexter Fletcher who is quite possibly the best thing about this film. You see the survivors start to get together with varying levels of success, at which point some of the virus victims start to wake up as infected. It takes a while for the zombies in this film to act as you’d expect. They have them just wandering around uninterested in the other survivors for a while. Then as time passes they become more and more violent toward the survivors, finally becoming the kind of zombies we know so well. The start of the film with people wandering around amongst harmless undead is possibly the best part of it. When the zombies start to crave flesh, the film takes a turn for the worse. Suddenly we are treated to slowed down scenes of zombies attacking, strange colours fill the screen and it all goes a little bizarre for no reason. Like they watched Sin City and decided to so make it look like a comic but just now and then. I really didn’t like it, completely took me out of a film I was rather enjoying up ‘til that point. It all became a big disappointment and a rather interesting new take on a zombie film just slid down into a generic mess. Then you add in all the mistakes that start to happen. No one has electricity but then you go into David Carradine’s house and his kitchen light is on. Oh and the streets for some reason have been cleared of snow. That by itself would have just been a little annoying but by that point I had stopped caring about any of the characters and was just watching the film because I had to review it. For something that started off so well it just ended up a mess. Do yourself a favour and don’t waste two hours of your life on this film. I’ll never get them back and I regret that already.

I

’m new to the world of Blu-ray and when I bought my player I promised myself I wouldn’t spend all my time buying films I already owned as I had previously done with laserdisc and DVD. Sadly I was clearly underestimating my desire to own classic films in a shiny new format. So I had to run out and buy this when I found out about it. Quicker than the internet destroying Ben Affleck for becoming the new Batman I threw it into my Bluray player and marvelled at the new transfer. The film begins at the end; Vincent Price arrives to find his brother crushed in a press with the culprit apparently being his loving wife. She then sits down with Vincent and the Police to tell them the awful plight of Andre Delambre in a flashback. Soon you see the scientist attempt to change the way we travel with some outstanding experiments, he’s a family man, and you constantly ask yourself how she could do such a thing to someone she loved. One night the experiments take a turn as he finally attempts one on himself, and their lives will never be the same again. The Fly is quite frankly THE classic science fiction horror film, spawning 2 sequels and an outstanding remake which in turn also had a sequel. It looks great and holds up well against modern films. I still remember the first time I saw this film in a small flat on holiday in Tighnabruaich. It completely blew my mind. The ending still gives me goosebumps. It’s right up there with the Donald Sutherland version of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. This is a classic which deserves to be in everyone’s collection, and now we get to see it on a shiny Blu-ray. Shiny shiny Blu-ray.

on Mancini’s new horror ‘The Curse of Chucky’ is yet another sequel to the creepy ‘Childs Play’ saga. Once again, we find the plastic, stabby Chucky doll being shipped anonymously to an unsuspecting home, bringing with it all the usual toy related carnage.

After the mysterious death of her overbearing mother, the embittered hero Nica (played by Fiona Dourif, the daughter of Brad Dourif who plays Chucky) then must deal with the boring repercussions of deceased home owner’s estate dividing. All the while, the devious rag doll runs around causing his ginger mischief and stashing knives.

T

he movie ‘Trance’ is a complex arrangement of scattered story telling in which one-man psychotastophy Simon (played obscenely well by James McAvoy) is sent to a hypnotherapist by a group of gangsters in order to recall a forgotten memory.

After receiving a rather nasty head injury at the hands of frumpy thug Frank (Vincent Cassel) during an attempted art robbery, Simon is sent to professional neuro-linguistic programmer Elizabeth (Rosario Dawson) who tries to hypnotise him into remembering what he did with the valuable artwork, then she gets naked.

Despite being a 2 foot, cotton stuffed, freckled faced child’s plaything who can only seem to trot along like a slow toddler, Chucky manages to slaughter his way through most of the house before revealing himself as the nightmarish reincarnation of notorious serial killer Charles Lee Ray. ‘The Curse of Chucky’ doesn’t hold much in the way of surprises. It’s the same movie as the last several featuring the usual voodoo soul swapping hexes, the same rubbish killing scenes, the same gullible kid who doesn’t seem concerned about a talking doll covered in scars, the same blonde cheerleader type with horrible perfect teeth bouncing and then dying, and a big, dark, scary house with a crooked staircase. Complete with cheesy Chucky quotes and tragic people being irritating, ‘TCOC’ is a ridiculous example of how the same old movies can be recycled again and again and never actually get any better, although it is a film about a talking doll so I guess it was never supposed to be the next ‘Shawshank Redemption’. Although it was nice to see Danielle Bisutti get stabbed in the eye.

From this point on, the story becomes so convoluted and intricately plotted out, it becomes hard to write about without giving away any of the astonishing secrets or twisted twists. The feel of the movie itself is fast paced and ultra-modern with mind boggling concepts which keep the viewer constantly guessing wrongly at what could possibly be going on. Furthermore, as Trance incorporates a myriad of different film styles, it could be described as a great example of a ‘progressive’ film, something blue-moonishly rare and difficult to pull-off in the film world. And on top of all that, Rosario Dawson gets naked. As well as being a harsh, gritty look at the volatility of the human mind, AND displaying an in depth knowledge of the real world attributes of psychotherapy, suggestive language and hypnosis like an evil scheming Derren Brown with breasts who gets naked, Trance is a tragic masterpiece of passion burning so bright that it burns everything it touches to ash. A modern day Shakespearian ode to the wanting’s of a heart which cannot have what it seeks! (I’m drunk.) Summarily, go see ‘Trance’. You want to go see ‘Trance’. Don’t worry about those other films. They all just slip away, slip away into nothing and all that’s left is ‘Trance’. You want to go see ‘Trance’, don’t you? Yes... that would be nice. Now, I want you to stand up out of that chair, and you’ll feel totally relaxed, and go tell all your friends how great the movie ‘Trance’ is.

he release of Terror of the Zygons on DVD is a huge landmark in old school Who. This is the last of Tom Bakers adventures to be released; I have no idea why they left this classic for so long but I’m pleased it’s finally out there, and not just part of some crazy boxed set. It’s the last to feature the Brigadier for 8 years, the last regular outing for the bumbling Harry (though he would also appear in The Android Invasion later that year) and features Sarah Jane in an awesome lime green suit. Seriously it is a thing to behold.

Anyway, this time we find the Doctor in Scotland, he’s been called by the Brigadier as there have been accidents at some Oil rigs and they can find no reason why. Unit are held up in a nearby village inn looking into things when he arrives in full kilt regalia, but things are not well in the village as it comes to light that some of its inhabitants have been replaced with fake versions of themselves. The Zygons are basically out to get everyone in a constant lurking presence and the Loch Ness Monster is rampaging across the country. All in a day’s work for the Doctor really. It’s a great adventure for the Doctor slap bang in the middle of Robert Holmes outstanding run as script editor. If you’re a fan of old Who then you probably already own this on video, I already have it on laserdisc, but it is definitely worth picking up as there is a huge wealth of extras that all fans of the show will love. If you have been enjoying the new show and never looked into the older ones then you could do a lot worse than pick this up. It’s a great entry into the fourth Doctors adventures and well worth the space on anyone’s DVD shelf.

S

et in the clammy backwaters of Mississippi this smouldering piece of crime drama is another fine paragraph in the character acting school report of young Matthew McConaughey.

Our story tells of two fresh young lads Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) on a quest for adventure and exploring the large network of swamp rivers you would call their playground. They decide to seek out an old boat that has been stranded in a tree from a previous flood. When they find what they are looking for they soon discover that the boat is really a makeshift treehouse where Mud (McConaughey) has been living, a fugitive from the law. He’s patiently waiting for his girlfriend (Reese Witherspoon) to arrive so they can run away, we find out that he need the boys help to do that. Director and writer Jeff Nichols uses his passion for a drawn out slow tugging story to good effect here as we watch in wonder as the boys struggle over whether they’re doing the right thing in helping Mud. McConaughey pulls of an almost magical performance as the unfathomable good guy, bad guy, that pushed the movie along. The young actors also do a great job of holding their own against such a standout piece of work from the leading man. Mud certainly reminds me just how good a movie can be when it doesn’t rely on anything other than the camera, the acting and the writing.

he idea of The Bling Ring is simple – a group of Los Angeles teenage brats blindly stumble on the idea of robbing their local high profile celebrity homes after a couple of them find it easy to just walk into Paris Hiltons multi-million dollar mansions???

Ummm…. It really does sound too good to be true, but it is… basically it is a true story of a bunch of lemming ‘celebrity’ brainwashed shallow kids who walk in to these massive houses and make off with over $3 million in bootie…. Basically for a laugh. Having taken 3 attempts to watch the movie in full I just don’t know what it is supposed to be saying? You can bet most parents are shocked at what they do but on the other hand most teens will be loving what they get up to in much the same way they love everything about all the ‘Blah Blah Shores’ scripted reality crap… the movie doesn’t really sway one way or the other so it leaves me feeling like… well… why bother? It’s a sh*t story, with pretty sh*t acting from a pretty sh*t cast. Are we supposed to be shocked about the reason these shallow kids seem to rely on ‘celebrities’ to influence their lives? Gees… get a job and some responsibilities and I’m sure they will soon forget about worrying what a celeb is doing, saying or wearing. Are we supposed to be shocked that these overpaid celebrities seem to value their belongings enough to leave them in an empty house, with the keys under the mat? We know that already… Gees. Are we supposed to be shocked that a justice system lets most of the brats off scot free? (well a few weeks in jail and some community service doesn’t really cut it for stealing $3 million dollars’ worth of peoples stuff does it?) There isn’t really anything stand out about the movie and I’m guessing it was really Watson’s name that got anyone along to see the movie at the cinema at all. It’s just pretty wishy washy overall, with no real statement on pop culture or society at all that we didn’t know already. My only shock is that some lemming will see this film and be impressed with it… it’s gonna happen.

ole Models might just have slipped under a lot of peoples radar due to it trailing as a pretty average film. Cynic Danny (Paul Rudd) and horn-dog Wheeler (Seann William Scott) are two dudes pretty much drifting through life like a couple of wasters getting by selling energy-drinks to unsuspecting kids. After an altercating with a county tow-truck they end up bing ordered to do some community service, which happens to be becoming ‘Big Brothers’ to two wayward kids. Dungeons & Dragons nerd Augie (Mintz-Plasse) and ‘wido’ black kid Ronnie. Awkward moments ensue, life lessons are taught, lots of swearing and even some romance? Oh… and some role playing… know what I mean, wink?

Sounds pretty predictable in the same way ‘Superbad’ reads and look what happened there so trust me, Role Models is a laugh a minute. Scott is great as usual but kudos must go to the Rudd’ster here - he puls off an awesome performance, makes everyone else up their game and also wrote the screenplay, which is consistently awesome throughout. There are one-liners a plenty and you feel that all the character get large chunks of the good stuff regardless of how small their part is. The final scenes have all the characters foamed up to the nines taking on a faux battle against D&D evil – a comic version of Lord Of The Rings comes to mind here. Rudd lays himself out here and shows you that he is a talented guy on paper, as well as in front of and behind the camera. If you wanna see Rudd being funny, a grown up Stifler, some honest and funny swearing and some boobies (one for the guys there), then make sure you pick it up on DVD/Online. You won’t regret it…

rothers: A Tale of Two Sons has the tone of a light-hearted fairytale, at your first look of the game. With a Bambi reminiscent opening, showing a dying mother, starts things off on a teary note. The Brothers actual quest itself starts with more of a ‘go with the flow’ feeling, even with the fear of losing their father to an illness heavy in the air. The Brothers adventure ends up being much more surprising (and challenging to control at first) than it primarily appears both stylistically and narratively, even though the dialog is some strange form of gibberish. And, of course, it is a fairy-tale, just not the Disney kind, but more of the savageness of the Grimm brothers. The sweet soon turns sour once chapters are finished, with the baying sheep and hustle and bustle of village life left behind for adventures among ancient clockworks as trolls patrol, fending off wolves in the night, and other dangers that are equally wonderful and strange to behold. Brothers’ central unique independence is how you actually control them. You guide them independently with your two thumbsticks (one for each) and a single action button each. Reasonably good coordination will let you overcome the obstacles fairly quickly. Even with the gates and ledges to manoeuvre, teamwork is also required in some stages like when the brothers gain the attention of a growling dog by taking turns distracting it allowing the other sibling to escape. With only a few exceptions, the puzzles aren’t particularly challenging and the action feels fairly tame. But the sudden attention of controlling the brothers accordingly and in synch brings the memory of patting your head while rubbing your tummy, even simply running can be a challenge. Yet the softness of the gameplay and oddness of the controls make almost every action interesting, with the game doing a fabulous job at one point of tying the controls to the story, making even the most obvious tasks a joy and not a chore. A Tale of Two Sons is similar to Ico and Journey. To counter, its strengths are minor and subtle and by the end, it’s reminiscent and thoughtful. It’s worth breathing in, and the game knows it, with benches scattered about, offering a breather and a directed camera pan, showing you where you’ve been and where you’ll go. If the premise of the game intrigue you, then might want to take a look. Sam Sheppard for GoGuide Magazine

ust over ten years have passed since Rockstar pushed the limits of open-world adventures with the release of Grand Theft Auto III, they continued to push forward over that 10 year span, peaking arguably with San Andreas way back in 2004. After a return to Liberty City in GTA IV we make our way back to Los Santos for the second time to rob, hijack and stir up some trouble.

I guess Los Santos is GTA’s equivalent to Los Angeles as the new game really throws in the amazing mountains and deserts of southern California in what Rockstar has claimed is a map bigger than GTA San Andreas, Liberty City and Red Dead Redemption's Valley all combined. You’ll be inclined to believe that as you watch day turn into night while still driving along the freeway. It may seem like a drag driving across the whole map but it is lifted by your 16 radio stations to choose from for some sounds and of course the beautiful scenery... or you could just take the cab. For the first time in GTA you’ll be controlling three characters while in Los Santos. Michael - a retired bank-robber living the "good life". Franklin - a repo-man and former street hustler and Trevor - a former bank-robber and all-round psychopath. Each of the characters you can be switched to while free roaming and is sometimes required during missions, even when you switch character they’ll be up to some of their own escapades such as; Michael may be relaxing by the pool, Franklin could be driving around the country and Trevor could be chasing

down some random unfortunate person. Plus each character comes with their own wardrobe, hairstyles, bank accounts and weapons, meaning buying a new gun with Trevor won’t mean Michael will have the weapon also. Each character comes with a set of skills, Michael being the better shooter and more stealthy than the others, Franklin being the better driver and Trevor the better Pilot, however each skill can be increased during gameplay. They also have their own unique special abilities that can be activated to get an advantage, Michael has a Max Payne style bullet-time mode without the frantic diving all over the place, Trevor’s berserk rage can soak up most the damage while Franklin’s slow-mo driving can be used to get through some tight situations on the road, all help make the individuals feel more unique. You do get to choose who you want to muck about with but the game does seem to centre on Michael’s life. After really having no choice but to re-enter his old working days, after meeting up with Franklin, being in debt to some dangerous figures and an unwanted reunion with his old partner in crime Trevor, Michael must re-enter the world of organised crime. With 69 missions to play and plenty of side missions you can expect at least 30 – 40 hours of just the story missions alone. Some missions can only be activated with certain characters with the colour coordinated symbols on your HUD map. You can even bump into each other while not on a mission and even possibly hang out. Don’t try harm the other character though as they will just appear at the closet hospital and send you the bill, and expect an angry text message too. Like Red Dead Redemption, you'll also make friends just by driving through the city. The mini-map will sometimes highlight a random event that you can watch or act upon such as a mugging, or a car theft etc. This might get you a reward and a well done mate or a new contact that could even help you in later missions. GTA5’s heists are definitely among the game's greatest moments. The only disappointment being that the game is practically begging for one or two more and some seem to be a tad too easy, or even just wanting more plan swerving road blocks to appear. You can prep for every big score where you scout the location and plan the best way to do the job. Most of these can be done by any of the main characters, and sometimes you can add your own zest like choosing a customized getaway car and placing it at a specific point on the map. Heists can also sometimes offer you two different approaches, teasing you to revisit them for a different experience. Whenever the guys are planning on a big job you can choose who you want to join your crew, these characters have different skills and cut demands so the more experienced will cost the most. Although as the crew’s skills increase after every heist, choosing a

cheaper, lower-skilled character from the beginning, then increase their skills over time is a good option as even though their skills increase their cut of the loot does not. With the epic scale of the game, it’s nice to see that GTA5 tries to avoid wasting your time. Character swapping helps keep story momentum by quickly sending you to the next destination. Missions that would stall you from proceeding until you returned at a later time of the day now speed up the clock so you don’t have to wait. With your mobile phone you can buy stocks, cars and property anywhere, anytime. Best of all, missions often start with a cinematic zoom in on characters already ready for action or begin seamlessly when entering certain rooms or buildings, no more fade in’s and out’s. Freaks and Strangers act as the side missions for the game that you’ll come across on your mini-map, some offer a few missions while others give you the ability to search for certain items. GTA5 is a game full of splendour. Any mountain you see from the distance of the big city can be trekked up or crashed into, and when you see the lights of Vinewood at night flickering in the distance, you’ll really appreciate and be overwhelmed with the scale of the map. On a smaller scale, there’s an even more remarkable level of detail and human interaction. Your safe houses now have actual people living in them. With Franklin starting out staying with his aerobics obsessed Aunt and Michael has to put up with his dysfunctional family while trying to relax at home. Shared with the sudden cries for help that pop up on the map, these touches make Los Santos feel like a place where people actually live and breathe in. The radio has always spoken of your activities on certain missions, but now it works both ways. If you’re interested in stocks, listen to the financial news on the radio and you can put it to good use in the stock market instantly thanks to your phone. Buying stores and buildings will also increase your income, now though you may be asked to help out your business for small mission in order to get your full payment. Grand Theft Auto V is one heck of an achievement. The closest thing to a perfect game, you may not even experience all that GTAV has to offer with all the activities and side-missions you can participate in but GTA5 always seems to give you something new to experience, even when you complete the campaign you'll realize the game only showed you about half of the actual game. If you like GTA, you probably own it right now. If you don't, you're missing out on something that should NOT be missed.

GAMING REVIEW

GTA

ONLINE

didn’t get off the best of starts on its launch day; even today players are still having trouble gaining access to its servers. Reasons being the fact of GTA V doing exceptionally well during its first days and weeks of release (it raised over $1 billion of sales after only 3 days of being on sale, and it’s not even out for PC yet). That makes the game the fastest selling entertaining product in history, before that Call of Duty: Black Ops II held that title. But the downside to that amazing achievement is, GTA

Page 154

Online is going to get hammered with utterly millions of eagerly awaiting players.

implies what your parents look like then finally what your overall character will look like.

Rockstar even admitted their concern for the idea after it became clear just how huge the amount of copies that sold was. So much so that even over the short period between the games initial launch and the Online service becoming available, there has been pretty much a non-stop spate of buying and installing new servers for the game.

Then if you’re lucky enough to actually get into a server, you meet up with Lamar, who suggests that he might be inviting us down to Los Santos with you being friends with him on ‘LifeInvader’ after all. You’re required to play a few tutorials to get used to the basics, then its smooth sailing, robbing and occasional murdering either yourself or with friends.

For those of us fortunate enough to gain access to the world of GTA Online, it’s an experience like no other and something that only Grand Theft Auto can deliver. Still being centred in the humongous location Los Santos, Rockstar claimed that the online part of GTA actually takes place a few months prior the events of the story mode of GTA V. Meaning you’ll run into some familiar faces and be introduced to some new ones. Once joining online you’re required to create your custom character, which works in a somewhat odd way. Instead of the traditional way of choosing what your character looks like, you’re required to select what your grandparents look like on both your mother and fathers side of the family. That then

Joining with friends or fellow ‘Crew’ members can be a wee bit tricky, with the current state the servers are at the moment, but once you’re all together you can get yourselves into all kinds of trouble. First of all you will want to get some money in your pocket, then out your pocket and into your bank account so other players can’t kill you then loot whatever cash you have left behind. Easiest way to get money is to stick up some stores, it’s not a lot of money but there are a lot of stores. Performing jobs will get a good reasonable pay check and selling cars usually gets you a rather nice surprise. Super or ‘Hot’ cars that are stolen can’t be sold but even the average motor will get you a good price.

OCT 2013 - issue (33)

Pretty much the same activities from single player are included within multiplayer such as tennis, paragliding, golf etc. For some missions, a second online player is mandatory, while the rest you can tackle on your own if you please. Once you’ve aquired some money, it can be spent either on clothes, car upgrades, weapons and now garages and apartments. You might want to save up though as things can be pretty expensive, so no buying a new pair of shoes after every mission. When you gain money it will be added to your pocket but, as I mentioned earlier, it can be prone to being stolen. To keep it secure, firstly you can go to an ATM machine to deposit the cash to your bank account or secondly, for a faster option you can use your phone to do the exact same thing via the internet. Rockstar will soon launch an update that will allow heist for co-op players, where you and the players can rob gas stations, banks and jewellery stores. Players can run into the store, pull out a gun, and aim at the shop keeper. The interesting thing is that when a player talks into the microphone, his in-game mouth will move, meaning if you shout something such as “put the money in the bag!”, the in-game

AI will respond and do what you said, the angrier you sound, the more scared they’ll be. Afterwards, the player in charge during the heist gets to decide how much money each person gets, meaning they could take $10,000 for themself, whilst giving another person $10. The others can then decide if their amount is fair. If they don’t believe it’s fair, they can kill the player in charge and take the money for themselves. Grand Theft Auto Online may have had its issues and to be fair still has some of them, but when the game is finally fixed, or even playable to some players, is going to be an entire new GTA experience all together.

GOGUIDE NEXT GE I

t’s the eve of battle and the next generation of gaming consoles is just over the horizon, so much so that you can even get a whiff of that new console smell. And for the first time in history, the two leading titans; Sony and Microsoft are going head to head releasing their new next gen hardware just days apart from each other. Arguably with Microsoft taking the win over the last generation with the Xbox 360, since the beginning of the year Sony has being building nothing but momentum leading to its release while Microsoft has hit its fair share of bumps on road and even backtracked a fair bit along the way. But it will all come down in November when the two consoles are finally released, who will be the victor‌

he Terminator is a 1984 American science fiction action film directed by James Cameron, co-written by Cameron, Gale Anne Hurd and William Wisher, Jr., and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn and Linda Hamilton. It was filmed in Los Angeles, produced by Hemdale Film Corporation and distributed by Orion Pictures. Schwarzenegger plays the Terminator, a cyborg assassin sent back in time from the year 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor, played by Hamilton. Biehn plays Kyle Reese, a soldier from the future sent back in time to protect Sarah. Though not expected to be either a commercial or critical success, The Terminator topped the American box office for two weeks and helped launch the film career of Cameron and solidify that of Schwarzenegger. Three sequels have been produced: Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), and Terminator Salvation (2009), as well as a television series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008–2009). In 2008, The Terminator was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
