PRESIDENT’S CORNER Hello All:

W

e are now in the midst of the mid-summer monsoon season. Last year we had almost no rain here in the valley. This year we are making up for lost time. It rained 2.5 inches here in Scottsdale just yesterday and there is flooding everywhere. I managed to take my car in for service and a wash and got home just in time before the heavy rains hit. It is also fortunate that there are no driving tours scheduled right now as they would likely be cancelled. We are in the process of revising a number of important club policies. Based on some recent events we are creating some new safety rules for Driving Tours and we are also revising and working towards revamping our Club Photo Gallery policies and methods. You will see the changes in the near future at the Driving Tour event documentation and also our club’s photo gallery (Smug Mug). We would all like to congratulate Angela Manente (Our Going Places editor in Chief) for taking 3rd place in Class 5 of the PCA national club newsletter competition. Way to go Angela !!!! Our club web masters/designers Jack Arnold and Kevin Gilchrist also took 4th place in the website competiton. Way to go Jack and Kevin !!!! The Arizona Region is running the following upcoming events: · August 4 – Monthly Meeting – Maggiano’s in North Scottsdale · August 8 – Driving Tour to Mt Lemmon in Tucson · August 21 – Porsches N Pancakes – Arizona Biltmore · September 1 – Monthly Meeting – Members Appreciation night – Movie night · September 11 – Porsches N Pancakes at Schmooze · September 18 – New Members Day – at the Culinary Dropout in Tempe · September 19 – Drive to South Mountain in Phoenix · September 25 – AutoX - AMP · October 1-4 – Hot Air Balloon Tour in Albuquerque, NM · October 6 – Monthly Meeting – Brat Haus in Scottsdale · October 16 – Porsche N Pancakes – Anthem Country Club · October 23 – AutoX – AMP · October 23 – Concours Judging School · October 30 – DE – AMP · November 3 – Monthly Meeting – Porsche North Scottsdale · November 6 – Flight 43 – Riverview Park - Tempe · December 18 – Annual Holiday Party – Hilton Pointe Tapatio Resort I hope to see you all at an upcoming event Drive Safely

MEET A MEMBER

T

he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Going Places Editor, I would like to introduce featured member, Gerd Wuestemann.

1. When did you join PCA? I joined in June 2021.

2. What Porsche(s) do you have? I have a 2018 911 Carerra T.

3. Where are you from?

From Eschwege, a small town in Germany.

4. Family?

I have a wife here in Scottsdale and her family back in Louisiana…..but my family in Germany have all passed away. We have two awesome dogs.

5. Work background or trade?

I am the President and CEO of Scottsdale Arts, Arizona’s largest arts non profit. We consist of six major branches covering all visual and performing arts, events and festivals, public art and arts education. We have around 200 staff members on our 20 acre Civic Center campus. Check us out at ScottsdaleArts.org

6. What makes your car special?

It’s an A1 black T :) I love the lowered suspension, torque vectoring, limited slip let’s you play a little. Little sound damping plus lightweight glass makes the sport exhaust really audible. It’s my daily and it never feels too fast - I can use most of the car much of the time. I love it.

7. Next upgrade?

Hmmmmmmm - I’m not sure yet about the 992’s (the bubble but and sound kinda turns me off and I’d miss the cool cupholders). MAYBE a 991.2 GT3 Touring ……but ouch - that’s real $$.

8. Have you personalized your car?

It has full CQFR coating (looks spectacular) and most panels have Expel film. Also moderate tint - makes the PCA sticker in rear corner of side windows look cool. That’s it though - it is also spec’d sans the T side-decals, so it is very understated….I like it!

| 8 |

9. Favorite memory with a car?

In ANY car? Driving a friend’s Ferrari 512 BBi on the Autobahn to the limit back in the 80’s. In my own Porsche: a long camping trip in my 981 Boxster S including some off-road adventures. I do buy them to drive them!

10. Why did you buy your Porsche?

I love this car’s spec, it’s relatively rare and it is quick but not too much so. It has all the driver goodies I want in a tidy package - I think a great modern drivers car. I love the seats and interior package with GT Silver pinstripes - soooo cool. Oh yeah and since it’s my daily I like having warranty and stuff like Car Play. Did I mention it’s flat black with those cool T grey wheels, grey GT mirrors and grey rear grill and lettering .

11. High school nickname?

Friedrich-Wilhelm Schule……hmm, we don’t do nicknames or have fun with schools in Germany - it’s all very severe.

12. Top 3 cars you would own?

Well, there’s a 993 C4S, because I really love the tail of that car. At some point I should own a 1964 911 - my birth year and such a pretty car. After that - well, maybe a 1970’s Pagoda Mercedes 280 SL manual for open top cruising in style, or that aforementioned GT3 or a Boxster Spyder. But really my T is kinda it.

he club is in full swing with lots of events planned for the rest of the summer and fall. Check out the calendar and event information in this month’s issue. There’s plenty going on! Don’t wait to sign up because you might wind up on the waiting list. We even have one drive that has no limit on the number of participants. Celebrating 5 years this month as the Going Places editor and faithfully entering the PCA annual newsletter contest every year, I finally won an award for our region. 3rd Place in Class 5 (based on membership size) for 2020... I’m over the moon! Maybe, it’s time to start looking for a new editor... If you might be interested, reach out to me at: gpeditor@az.pca.org I want to congratulate Artie Epstein, whose Porsche photo won Porsche of the Week in e-Brake News, July 20th issue. You can see his picture on page 33. It’s awesome! Also, kudos to Jack Arnold and Kevin Gilchrist, our club web masters/designers, took 4th place in the PCA website competiton. This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Gerd Wuestemann for contributing “Meet a Member.” He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to write articles and take pictures at our AZPCA events for Going Places, because without your stories and articles it would be pretty difficult to publish our monthly newsletter/magazine. Looking forward to seeing you in person at one of our upcoming events.

REGION ANNOUNCEMENTS Driving Tour to Mount Lemmon Sunday, August 8, 2021 Take a break from the summer heat in the Valley and join your fellow PCA club members on a drive to Tucson and up into the cool climes of the Santa Catalina Mountains. We will meet at the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in Ahwatukee and head down I-10 and across the Old Pueblo to the Catalina Highway, where the fun part of the drive begins. The Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway is one of the best drives in Arizona. “Aside from the arresting canyon and mountain views, the nearly 60mile round-trip byway offers visitors the biological equivalent of driving from the deserts of Mexico to the forests of Canada.” And, the twisty drive is even more fun when negotiated in a Porsche! We will have lunch at the Sawmill Run restaurant in Summerhaven. The restaurant was named for two sawmills that once existed at this location. The full menu is available for you to enjoy on the outdoor deck while taking in the cool mountain air among the tall pines. After lunch you can check out Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley, and maybe take a ride on the ski lift to the top of the mountain for awesome views in every direction.

You can make this a day trip, or you may want to spend the night in Tucson and take a leisurely drive home on Monday. Recommended lodging is at the Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort and Spa. See details about this event on the AZPCA website: Mt Lemmon Tour. AZPCA Driving Tours sell out early, so don’t wait to sign up!

Friday evening, we will have dinner at a restaurant near the hotel followed by a presentation on the Atomic Bomb and the effects of radiation presented by Steve Sapareto (our first “hot air” event). Saturday morning, we will drive into White Sands Missile Range to the Trinity Bomb site and museum where the first atomic bomb was detonated. It is only open to the public two days per year (don’t worry, radiation levels are very low). We will leave the site about noon time for lunch and a scenic drive to Albuquerque arriving in time to visit the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History (https://www. nuclearmuseum.org/) for a guided tour before checking into our hotel at the Albuquerque Marriot Pyramid North. Dinner will be on your own at one of the nearby restaurants. Getting up very early Sunday we will watch the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Mass Ascension, one of the largest balloon launches in the world from a good vantage point (possibly the Albuquerque Porsche dealership). More than 700 balloons from all over the world launch from a 78-acre launch field (54 football fields) at the 365-acre Balloon Fiesta Park. Those interested can also join us to meet the Lambda Car Club for the Fiesta of Wheels, a car display right on the balloon launch grounds, displaying our cars along with over 200 others. This will provide free admission to the balloon grounds. The rest of the day will be available for sightseeing followed by an evening dinner and viewing of the Balloon Glow and Fireworks at the International Balloon Museum Foundation (https://balloonmuseum.com/ ). We will return home on Monday as a group or individually. Those interested in arranging balloon rides should contact Rainbow Ryders the official Fiesta Balloon ride concession. Find contact information at www.balloonfiesta.com under guest information. Other special event offerings are also listed. The registration fee (expected to be about $130.) will cover the VLA tour, Friday night dinner and presentation, the National Museum of Nuclear Science tour, and International Balloon Museum banquet and tour. All other meals and lodging will be at your expense. Check our AZPCA website to sign-up. We only have a limited number of rooms available at each location so please make your reservations as soon as possible to get our group rate and to ensure a room as hotel lodging during the Balloon Fiesta will be extremely difficult to find. Make Reservations for Friday night, October 1st at the Socorro Hotel & Suites, 1100 N. California, Socorro, NM 87801, Phone: (575) 838-0556 ($119.99/night). Mention the Porsche Club to get our rate. AZPCA Autocrossing Driving Pointers by Kenneth Mitchell

T

he 2021/2022 AZPCA Region Autocross Series will start on Saturday, September 25, 2021, and as of this writing (July 7), the entries for this event is already at 60% of the event’s maxmum capacity. If you are considering attending this event, you should go ahead and sign-up before the maximum capacity is reached and you are put on a waiting list. If this is your first event and if you wish to have some driving instruction, please email, Kim K. or Rick A., Autocross Co-Chairs, at autocross@azpca.org to let them know that you would like to have an instructor. If you have never entered an autocross event before, do not worry about or feel that you are going to embarrass yourself. You are not going to embarrass yourself. Every driver that has been autocrossing for awhile were new themselves at one point and have been in the same position as you are now. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. It is best to start out driving the course to what is a comfortable level for you. You will build up your confidence level at your own pace as you enhance your driving skills. The AZPCA Website is a great source of information on preparing your car for your first event. Go to the “Events” tab and click on the tab and than click on “Autocross”. To help you feel a little more comfortable with your first autocross event and make the event enjoyable, here are some autocross driving pointers for you to consider: •Relax - Don’t death grip the steering wheel. •Breath – Remember to breath while you are driving on the course. Yes, it is easy to forget about breathing. •Steering Wheel Hand Position – Ten and Two or Nine and Three positions, what ever is comfortable for you. Never let go of the steering wheel or allow the steering wheel to slip through your hands while the steering wheel in unwinding from a turn. •Be Smooth - in your driving technique with your steering inputs, and brake and accelerator applications. If you are abrupt with your driving you will upset the balance of your car. •Look Ahead - where you want to place the car before you arrive at the point to execute the next maneuver. You will naturally drive to the point where you were looking at. If you are looking at where you are immediately at, you will not have time to react.

•No Coasting – either you are on the brakes just before a turn or on the accelerator to your next braking point which will be at the next turn. •Slalom Segments – think about where you want to place the inside rear tire when you are executing the slalom cones. •Transmission Gear Selection – Most cars can traverse an autocross course in second gear. •Be Patient – Patience will reward you in the future. Do not overdrive the course. If you overdrive you may get frustrated. •Driving Mistakes – Are not mistakes. They are learning points. As you continue to gain driving experience you will be making various learning points. You will know it when it happens. Learn from your learning points. •Fun – Other than being safe and safety is the first upmost important factor, the second utmost factor of an autocross event, is have fun. Having fun at an AZPCA Autocross event beats having fun anywhere else. Oh, by the way, you are forewarned, and be prepared, for humongus “GRINS”, “YES”, ear-to-ear type grins, it will happen, guaranteed. •Trophies – Don’t worry about a trophy because there are no trophies, just lots of fun, comaraderie, and a free hotdog. Well, what do you think? You know that this could be the most fun anyone can have with their Porsche car. All Porsches were designed and engineered to be driven in driving events such as, an autocross event. Your Porsche will smile and love you if you bring it to an AZPCA Region Autocross Event. The 40% remaining entries will go fast, so you better act fast, so don’t wait any longer or you will end up being placed on the waiting list. If you want to bring a guest, please include them when you register for the event at Autocross Sept 2021 AZ PCA AMP (motorsportreg.com). Unfortunately, guests are not eligible for the complimentary Hot Dog lunch provided by the Region. However, the guests may be able to purchase a meal from the vendor. If you have an adult friend that would like to experience autocross as a passenger we offer a Taste of Autocross option, which does include a free hot dog lunch and a great time in the right seat, just select Taste of Autocross as an add-on option during registration.

Article by Tom Beeler Fifth in a series on Porsche Indy car history

espite Porsche’s breakthrough win at Mid-Ohio in 1989, the prevailing winds from Stuttgart were shifting. The program was in trouble. “The guy I reported to was Porsche’s research and sports director, Helmut Flegl,” explained Porsche Indy car program director, Derrick Walker. “He had the direction from the board, Derrick Walker headed up the Porsche Factory and he dealt head-on with them. He got all the flack that they can throw at anybody, Indy Program, from 1988 through 1990. and it filtered down to us. “But because they were in Germany and I was in America, we had to just focus on the job, and how we could get this program up to speed quick enough, quite frankly, before the interest disappeared from the factory and the board of directors.” While March’s 1989 season chassis was considered “robust and reasonably competitive” by Walker and the team, the real strength sat behind the driver. “The thing that was really good about that car was the engine,” Walker said. “It was by far the best engine, and the other Indy car teams knew it. It got better and better and better as time went on.” The 1990 season would see the 1990 variant plugged into what was supposed to be “the ultimate Porsche Indy car”, but what ultimately turned out to be “a step backwards”, according to Walker. “It was a step forward in technology and the design,” said Walker, “but the whole package just did not work. The second March that we had (the 89P) would have been, by far, the best one to stay with a while longer, and update that. But, of course, hindsight's 20/20.” The March 90P was revolutionary. Very low, lean, and - most importantly - all carbon fiber, which made it both lighter and stronger than the Lola and Penske cars running against it. “March read the rules very carefully, and realized that the use of a carbon fiber chassis would be available at the end of the 1989 season. None of the other manufacturers thought that anybody would want to go that far, because carbon chassis was still relatively new and had never been done in Formula One,” Walker said. “So, March, convinced Porsche that they could do a carbon chassis. And so, they secretly designed this car to be carbon.” Roger Penske and Carl Haas, both of them Indy car team owners and chassis builders, lobbied hard against the new March chassis. The Penske and Lola cars still

retained the heavier aluminum honeycomb tub structure that had been used in Indy cars for years. As a result of this CART team owners’ fear of eventual Porsche dominance, March’s 90P chassis was banned on the grounds that it was unsafe, forcing them to reengineer the 90P with conventional aluminum honeycomb materials. (It’s worth noting that both Penske Cars and Lola Cars introduced all-carbon fiber cars for the 1991 season, and all modern Indy cars continue to use the same basic construction today.) “It was a typical ‘stick-it-to-ya’ job,” Walker said, “and they knew exactly what they were doing,” adding, “It was probably the spear in the heart of Porsche that told them to get out of Indy car.” The engine for 1990 was the 2.65L turbocharged V8, generating approximately 725hp at 8,500 rpm. The chassis, however, was a refugee from the pigpen. The changes removed the natural rigidity of the chassis. Early tests at Phoenix International Raceway revealed that the chassis was too flexible. “It never had enough downforce, and it had a lot of drag,” Walker explained. “It had titanium wheel hubs which were huge. The wheel nut was something like four inches in diameter.” Porsche’s experience in sports cars, where timed pit stops weren’t as critical, gravitated to larger wheel nuts. “We've got a big nut that doesn't spin off that quick. So, change the threads, up the pressure in the guns, practice and practice and practice, and to try and find a way to go quickly. We couldn’t make it any quicker, so we got killed in the pits.” The turbocharger — conventionally mounted to the rear of the engine, but on the front of the ’90 Porsche — created new issues. “The maintenance on trying to keep that thing from burning down was huge,” Walker explained. “It crippled us with work load — it was a high maintenance car. “I've got a book that lists hundreds of modifications made. March was pumping out modification after modification, and we didn't have enough grip.” Teo Fabi practiced in the 90P for the Phoenix 200 race, but complained that the chassis didn’t respond to adjustments. Porsche technical director Helmut Flegl was forced to send March engineers to the USA to modify on the car.

In 2013 Walker became President of Operations of IndyCar.

The decision was made to run updated 89P chassis at both Phoenix and Long Beach. The 90P was readied for Indianapolis, sporting new Foster’s Lager sponsorship. Arie Luyendyk had reportedly been tapped by Porsche to drive the second car alongside Fabi, but a full-time ride with Doug Shierson’s Domino’s team opened up, causing the Dutchman to be replaced by American John Andretti. Andretti qualified on the first weekend, ending up 10th on the grid. Fabi’s engine let go in pre-qualifying practice, forcing him to practice in his 89P chassis and engine until the decision was made to wait for the new car to arrive from Germany, and use the time to sort out the new March’s handling issues. Fabi would go on to be the tenth-fastest car overall, qualifying 23rd, at a four-lap average of 220.022 mph. Fabi and Andretti would be the fastest non-Ilmor/Chevy powered qualifiers. Unfortunately, on Race Day, no one could touch the Ilmor/Chevys. G O I N G P L A C E S 88.2021

| 25 |

Luyendyk would go on to win the race in one of the fastest 500s ever. John Andretti spun on Lap 136, finishing 21st. Fabi’s transmission failure on Lap 162 left him in 18th. As the season progressed, Arrows/Porsche’s new F1 V12 and the 3.5L sports car engine programs were stealing technical focus from Walker’s CART effort. The team worked on shedding weight from the 90P throughout the season, but the results remained disappointing. Fabi’s best start was a surprising pole at Denver, and a podium finish of third at the Meadowlands. By late summer, the reckoning arrived. Porsche pulled the plug. Walker had hoped to campaign a conventional chassis in 1991 with Porsche power, and while a couple of teams expressed interest in the Porsche engine, funding never materialized. Walker retained what was left of the team Al Holbert had assembled, and campaigned in CART and the Indy Racing League (IRL). In 1991, Walker entered a car with Willy T. Ribbs driving, who would go on to be the first African-American to compete in the Indianapolis 500. A season later, Walker Racing, with Scott Goodyear at the wheel, would finish second in the Indianapolis 500 in what remains the closest Indy 500 finish ever. Thus ends the saga of the Porsche crest on the noses of Indy cars. Will they ever return? As one might say in German, “Never say ‘niemals’.” The Porsche 90P is now part of the IMS Museum collection. The car is sponsored by Tom Wood Porsche in Indianapolis. It appears here as it did in 1990 in the Foster’s livery. All photos by Larry Clarino

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region

THE IROC PORSCHES: The International Race of Champions, Porsche’s 911RSR, and the Men Who Raced Them

T

he extended subtitle provides a good description of the subject matter of this book It does not indicate the quality of this book as a fine example of quality printing. Clear sharp pictures, double page spreads well registered, an IROC silhouette embossed on the cover, printed with a stripe in each of the 15 colors used on the cars. Chapter number and name on the tops of the pagers provide context to one’s reading. The end papers display a matrix of the cars in color with the proper driver’s names on the doors. The inside of the dust jacket is a picture ‘suitable for framing’. The book itself seems more like an advertising brochure than a book, having large type, lots of space between lines and large, simple and clear graphical presentations of relevant data. A subtle touch is the last page – all black with a picture of Mark Donohue and his IROC car in the center. Considerable discussion is given to the development and production of the 15 IROC Porsches. These cars were indeed special to that series though Porsche AG still listed them as Carrera RSRs derived from the production Carrera 2.7s sold to the public. The mostly subtle mechanical and visual differences from ‘production’ Carreras are described in this book. The Drivers’ chapter includes portraits and biographies of the 12 drivers who participated in the Porsche IROC races, held at Riverside International Raceway (RIP) and Daytona. The names are mostly known and expected by anyone familiar with the various racing series of the ‘60s and early ‘70s. Then prominent names that are not included are Mario Andretti and Al Unser (un-resolvable tire contract conflicts) and Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones and Jackie Stewart (ineligible due to recent ‘retirement’ from their respective primary racing series).

Chapter four of THE IROC PORSCHES deals with IROC rules and the three ‘heats’ at Riverside and the finale at Daytona. There are fairly comprehensive race reports and action photographs, especially at Riverside. This chapter ends with a summary review of the performances of the twelve drivers and some rather spectacular, color coded graphics showing the results of each race. It is interesting to this reviewer that though the Porsches were selected for IROC on the basis of their reliability, many mechanical failures are documented in this chapter. Not all the failures were experienced by the ‘circle track guys’ so it is not clear that driver experience, or lack there of, was part of the problem. The IROC Porsches Car by Car is the longest chapter in the book, gives the ‘life story’ of each of the fifteen IROC cars manufactured by Porsche. Their participation in the races and their subsequent life is dealt with in detail. The individual stories are fascinating, aided by pertinent photographs. Many were used in various levels of racing, and most have numerous owners and uses described. The final chapter gives a brief summary of the cars and context of the remaining twenty-nine years of IROC as it morphed into a version of NASCAR with attendant bureaucratic constraints. THE IROC PORSCHES is hardbound with 192, 9-1/2 x 12 inch pages on heavy weight matte paper. There are 200 color photos with comprehensive captions and a cursory but very through index It is a pleasurable read both for the information presented and for the bright, crisp formatting of the presentation. A spectacular addition to anyone’s coffee table. By the time you read this it should be available for $60.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or from Amazon Books. Remembrance of Technology Past

by Danielle Badler

I

remember a scene in a movie from not too long ago. Can’t remember the movie, just the scene. A young lady is at the apartment of an old man, and she wants to make a phone call. She finds a rotary dial phone, picks it up and tries to dial a number … by pressing the holes in the rotary dial.

Falcon that was actually given to me. It featured vinyl seats that stuck like glue on a hot day … which is something I would lobby against bringing back, ever. And then, a friend of the family was selling a ’64 Triumph TR-4, for $800, which was about all the money I had in the world. I bought it.

What triggered this remembrance was a story in The New York Times, under the headline “Stick Shifts Become the New Collectibles.”

My father drove it home for me. The first night I just sat in it, on the driveway. I started it up, set the mirrors, set the presets on the push-button AM radio. That weekend, my father took me out to learn how to shift for myself. And I proceeded to jerk the car so hard we started smelling gasoline. We opened the hood and saw that the fuel lines had come right off the carburetors. We lost half a tank of gas before we realized the problem. And then we simply stuck them back on.

Turns out, according to the article, “for the 1980 model year, 35% of the cars produced for sale in the US had manual transmissions…. Today, the share is about 1%. And just 18% of American drivers can drive a stick.” Further, in 2019, sales of electric vehicles surpassed the sale of manual transmission cars for the first time. Of course, the pivotal development, at least for us motorheads, was the introduction of quick-change paddle-shifting, manumatic transmissions, like Porsche’s PDK. Although, as manufacturers continue to go electric, even that technology will soon be added to the outdated techno pile. But the actual point of the article is that, among the cognoscenti, the value of manual transmission vehicles is actually skyrocketing. For example, the story cites a 2007 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano with a traditional gated shifter, which sold recently at auction for $692,500 … which is three to four times the value of a comparable car with a manu-matic. Although, allow me to clear my throat, the article does note that only 30 were built with a stick that year. There’s more. Apparently, there’s an underground movement to … is “retrofit” the right word? … convert? … certain late model cars to manual shifting. BMW M3s and M5s. The Aston Martin Vanquish. And, as you may have read, the news has not raced past our favorite marque. “Even Porsche, which announced that its new 911 GT3 would be offered with a six-speed manual, has had prices spike for certain rare, late-model stick-shift cars,” the article quotes the auction house Gooding. So … what’s different about a stick shift? Why don’t we also retrofit the 8-track? The audio cassette? The push-button radio? The drum brake? The manual high-beam control? The manual heater and air conditioner? The bias-ply tire? The necker’s knob? The swivel seat? The rumble seat? The crank starter? A direct quote from McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty insurance, in The Times’ story, “The learning curve isn’t really that steep.” Really? I take issue. Here’s how I learned. I was 17, armed with a brand-new driver’s license and a piece of junk ’61 Ford

For several weeks, I proceeded to coast through stoplights, slowing down to a crawl, but not stopping, God forbid, for fear that I’d lose another half tank of fuel if I had to come to a full stop again. But I eventually got the knack, got to practice blipping the throttle, got to master heel and toe downshifts. Got to the point where I felt like I could drive just about anything. Now, I’ve also driven 911s with Sport mode and Sport +. The latter is particularly amazing, because the revs stay in the upper power band, no matter what you do, and it upshifts and downshifts telepathically, which enables you to concentrate on just where you’re going, which, in the mountains, for example, or on the track, can be very convenient. I once did a PCNA driving event, and was fascinated that the factory driver left the paddle shifting to the car. I asked why, and he said it was because the computer’s smarter than he is. This from a factory driver. Which means, yes we know, we know, manu-matics are faster. But, and here’s the salient question, are they more fun? You do know the answer, don’t you. I get my answer every time I climb into my ’78 SC. Finding reverse without grinding the gears. Downshifting from fifth to … is it fourth? Or second? Driving the car is a challenge. It’s fun. And, to me at least, that’s where the value is. In the fun quotient. Not the rarity. And, sorry, McKeel, it isn’t so easy to master a manual. Not if you want to do it well. But that’s part of the fun. So, would that young lady know what to do with the funny device that comes out of the floorboard, if she hopped into my 911? I have this vision of her trying to find “Drive.” No, the reality is that the market’s simply moving on. And the techno-auto trash pile is growing, fast. If you like to shift for yourself, get yours soon. I’ve got mine. G O I N G P L A C E S 88.2021
