President’s Corner Ly l e

s I enter my final month as your club President, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to making this year a success. To the Board, thank you for your hard work on behalf of the club and for stepping up to fill vacancies which have arisen during the year. To our new Board members, thank you for volunteering to fill openings which arose. To all of our volunteers, thank you for your dedication organizing enjoyable events for our membership. To our membership, thank you for getting out and enjoying the events which have been made available to you. I would also like to thank those who offered their names as candidates for the 2018 Board of Directors and congratulate those that were successful. Another group deserving recognition are those of you who have offered me guidance, ideas, constructive criticism and comments on the club operations. It has been a great help as we all work to ensure members’ needs and interests are being met. The activities we all enjoy rely on the work of volunteers. As of this writing, one of our most popular monthly events will not be available for a period of time beginning in January. Porsches and Pancakes has been in need of a volunteer or volunteer team to take over from Alma and Nancy for the past six months. Without someone stepping into this role, this event will not continue. Please consider becoming involved. The Board and past chair persons for the event will provide guidance. There is an established list of locations we have used and enjoyed. You are not starting from scratch and ‘reinventing the wheel’, but rather continuing and building from an existing base of information. I hope that by the time you read this, the Porsches and Pancakes volunteer need will have been resolved. However, don’t fret if it is, there are plenty of other volunteer opportunities to take advantage of.

One of the activities I have always enjoyed is what I refer to as putzing around on my cars. Ok, so it is not really putzing, or aimlessly messing around as currently defined in the Urban Dictionary. I do expect to have a finished result that is better than when I started. Right now, I am in the midst to replacing a clutch cable. I say ‘in the middle of’ because it is the old story of starting something, then finding something else. In this case, getting the cable disconnected inside, then moving underneath the car and finding that the helper spring in broken, rush to order parts and hope they arrive in time for installation before Flight without making it an ‘all hours of the morning’ project. Minor mechanical stuff, but I need to start paying more attention when, a few weeks before an event, Joanne asks “Don’t you have some work to do on your car before Flight?” Next year I will start months in advance, plenty of time to get everything done. Or at least that is the current plan. This is the last print edition of Going Places that you will receive. All future editions will be electronic. Timeliness, costs and flexibility have been key drivers of this decision. Thank you to all of our editors, past and present, who have made this award winning publication so successful. A complete description of the Going Places conversion plan can be found in the September Editorial. The Christmas season is rapidly approaching. Joanne and I would like to wish you and your families a safe, happy and relaxing holiday. Best Wishes for an outstanding 2018!
Lyle

Attention AZPCA Members! The Arizona Region is in need of a Porsche and Pancakes Coordinator(s). This position can easily be split among a couple of individuals. The coordinator(s) for PnP plan and schedule the monthly breakfasts at locations around the Phoenix area. There are already many favorite locations identified. Get in touch with Alma Stewart (Sunnycalal@aol.com) and/or Nancy Gossard (nsgossard@gmail.com) for all the details. Please step up and fill one of these roles by contacting any Board Member.

ere we are again at the end of another wonderful year! So much to be grateful for, especially being blessed with good health and awesome friends. Mark did participate in the Drivers Ed held on October 14. He definately enjoyed the experience. I am signed up for the December 3 event, so I can learn how the Boxster is meant to be driven. So what’s in store for next year? Hopefully more Drivers Ed, Sunday Drives, Porsches and Pancakes, weekend trips, PCA ‘s 63rd Porsche Parade and PCA Treffen trips. I think that just about covers everything.

The winner of the Writer’s Drawing for the November issue of Going Places is Dennis Parle, “The Million Dollar Highway.” He will receive a $24.00 credit on Motorsportreg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. I am always looking for interesting articles, so if you have one please send it my way. I want to acknowledge some of our loyal, long-time members celebrating AZPCA anniversaries for December. 40 Years - Burkhard and Monica Franke 27 Years - R. Allen and Carol Naille 23 Years - Steve and Dorie Hanson
There are already some great events planned for 2018. • Sunday Drive to Mining Country - January 7 • 4th Annual Valentine’s Date Night - February 8 • Sunday Drive to Wickenburg - February 11

I am so excited that starting with our January issue of Going Places all our event pictures will be in color, the information/ content will also be much more timely. I will no longer need two months lead time to produce the newsletter. Yippee!

Autocross #2 Results by Rick Althouse and Kim Kemper
H
ey Autocrossers; Here are the results from last Saturday's event (September 30) at Arizona Motorsports Park. The first chart (left) is raw times for all of the runs, so add 2 seconds for each cone to get your time. The second chart (right) is the Top Time of Day organized from the fastest down. The weather was perfect in the early morning, but warmed quickly. By mid afternoon it was hot, even by Arizona standards. Kim created a fantastic course that was both challenging and extremely fun to drive. The new timing equipment performed flawlessly and really simplified set-up. A nice satisfying lunch was provided by Pat the Hot Dog Lady to everyone that registered on-line. It was great to finally see Porsches out number all of the other marques. Its been quite a while since that's happened! Congratulations to Fred for setting fastest time of day with Alexandra close behind him. Great driving on their part, and also shows what a well prepared race car can do! Thanks to everyone who helped to set up and take down the course and pack away all of the equipment. We look forward to seeing everyone again on Saturday, December 2 at AMP. W Ͳy ηϮ ^ĞƉƚĞŵďĞƌ ϯϬ͕ ϮϬϭϳ Z/s Z

Sunday Drive to Mining Country January 7, 2018 Make plans for a Sunday Drive in your Porsche on a route that features sites representative of Arizona's important copper mining industry. We'll head out from the East Valley on US-60 and turn south in Superior, home of the Resolution Copper Company. We will stop at the Ray Mine overlook to view the mining operations and hear an informative and interesting geology and mining description presented by AZPCA club member and mining engineer Jim Mackay.
Next, our drive will take us back toward Superior then on to Globe along the scenic and twisty stretch of US-60 that follows Queen Creek through Devil's Canyon. After lunch in Globe you will have a couple options for your return to the Valley. Some of us will follow Highway 188 past Tonto National Monument, crossing under the elegant arch of the bridge at Theodore Roosevelt Dam, then continuing on the scenic drive along Roosevelt Lake to the Beeline Highway and back to the Valley. Or you can re-trace the winding route back through Superior to Gold Canyon and the East Valley. It should be a great day for a January drive in Arizona, while most of the Porsches around the country are sitting in garages waiting for spring. Aren't we lucky to be living in the Sonoran Desert? Be sure to RSVP on the website at az.pca.org.

Sunday Drive - Prescott + Porsche by Ron Perot photos by Donny Blackburn and Bob Frith
H
aving my wife, Von, join me on a Sunday Drive organized by the club's esteemed planners, Rook and Debbie Younger, was a real treat. Von does not like to ride with anyone, especially me, because of motion sickness, even though our Boxster S is inherently very stable. After 12 years of driving alone on these and other club events, I suggested she do the driving and I promised not to be too critical of her driving. To my delight and surprise, she said, "Yes!" Saturday rolled around and we were looking forward to seeing some acquaintances we had not seen for some time because of the recent move and remodel of our home in Cave Creek. I gassed up, checked the tire pressure, cleaned the windshield inside and out, and topped off the radiator reservoir with a 1/2 pint of distilled water so I was sure my driver would not have any controllable catastrophes on our drive to Prescott.
Von and Ron Perot
We were up early on Sunday morning and had plenty of time to enjoy breakfast together before leaving for the meeting place at the First Watch (formerly the Good Egg) off Carefree Highway and I-17. It was a beautiful, cool morning but we put the top down to enjoy the fresh air. On the way to the rendezvous point, Von confessed she had never driven a convertible with the top down! With the windows up and heated seats on, I started to like being able to relax and enjoy the ride. We pulled into the restaurant parking lot to join the 40+ Porsche "corral." Renewing friendships and meeting new members is always part of the fun of gathering before a drive. Rook conducted a driver's meeting after Debbie had us sign the waver form suggesting that we leave in three groups for safety reasons and for drivers' speed preference of brisk, medium or moderate pace. A lead car and a sweep (last) car in each group were designated after covering some of the do’s and don'ts of such a large gathering of our nimble and shiny cars. Von decided the last car in the last group would be a good spot for her so she wouldn't be pressured to, heaven forbid, break the speed limit. Rook said he would follow behind us as the sweep in the last group. There was more than a little pandemonium as all those cars found their positions in their chosen group. A couple of Arizona's finest Sheriff's officers seemed to enjoy the movement of the cars as they readied for departure. My experience has been that Sheriff's officers always seem to see sports cars before seeing anything else, especially if I am driving. After some restless waiting and meeting more interesting car owners, we were on our way.
Lyle and Joanne Capstick
The temperature was perfect and with the sun at our back for the drive to Wickenburg. I pointed out the fields where I had hunted doves the week before and noticed the pace was perfect for Von as we never lost sight of the Porsches in front of us. Ken and Fran Steele
18
+ Picnic Just north of Wickenburg, a traffic circle caused some consternation and humor as we witnessed one car in the second group completely stop and another one miss the continuation loop and then quickly turnaround to rejoin the group. Anyone for traffic circle lessons? The road to Congress was uneventful, but the air was still refreshing. As we approached Yarnell Hill, we recalled the only other time Von had driven on this road. We were in a group of 3 Porsches that the aforementioned Sheriff decided to stop even though a family van had just passed us! Von avoided a ticket but an unnamed companion was not so lucky and was told, "Sports cars cause all the problems on this road." The twists up to Yarnell are classic and fun, not to mention perfect for our cars. Von mentioned she could tell the difference between some cars because of the smell of the minerals used in the catalytic converters of some Asian cars that we encountered! A pretty astute observation made possible with the top down, I thought. Have I mentioned, the weather was perfect and the drive through Peeples Valley was beautiful? As we approached the real twisties climbing up and down into our destination, a group of four sedans led by a lowered GT 500 Mustang ached to pass, which Von grudgingly allowed as there are few passing zones on this stretch of road. She noticed a Ford Fiesta trailing closely behind and obviously with the group of aggressive cars and said she was surprised to see it with the group. I commented that it is a turbo charged version and is really a lot more car than what it looks like! I pointed out she had done a great driving job and I never once had to use the imaginary brake on my floor board in the passenger seat to which she replied, "I will bet you wished you had an accelerator down there a few times." Smile. Following the others, we wound our way into the park where we were to meet the Porsche-philes from the Prescott-Flagstaff area. The smoke was rising from the barbecue and the gorgeous collection of Porsches was lined up and on display. Bob Frith and his friends from the North put on a terrific lunch and gathering as the pictures verify. It was great to see old friends and meet new people who love cars. Burgers and brats with salads and chips were the perfect picnic fare in the lake side pavilion in the woods. Have I mentioned the weather was fantastic? After enjoying lunch and promises to get some of us together for a "spirited drive" in the near future, Von and I departed with a few other cars but were soon dropped as they preferred to drive at a quicker pace than Von was comfortable. The highlight of the return was stopping in at the Rock Springs Cafe for a fresh pie. While I chose a key lime pie, Von bought some organic apples and a huge tomato. That pie was gone the next day. It was delicious as most Sunday drives have been for the past twelve years and this one was special as I enjoyed it with my special partner!
Chef, Bob Frith and Rook Younger checking it out!
It was a perfect day for a drive!
Until next time.

Porsches and Pancakes at Anthem Country Club by Nancy Gossard photos by Kevin Gilchrist and Dwane Stewart
O
n Saturday, October 7, we had another beautiful morning for breakfast with over 70 Porsche friends. This time we returned to the Ironwood Grille at Anthem Country Club. It is a wonderful setting with seating inside opening up to additional seating outside on the patio. We enjoyed a delicious brunch buffet. In addition to coffee, juice, fruit, etc., the omelet station seemed to be a big hit, as was my personal favorite, the Crème Brule French Toast. YUM! There was something for everyone. They really did a great job. At Anthem, it isn’t only about the food. There was, as always, an impressive display of Porsches around the circle overflowing into the parking lot. And, if that wasn’t enough, Richard Bernal was back to take photos of each couple with their car. Not only did he take the pictures, but he provided each couple with a copy of their photo. Thank you, Richard. And, of course, a special thank you to Frank and Maria Grimmelmann for putting this event together for us. Without you it would not be possible. It is obviously a club favorite for Porsches and Pancakes. Hope to see everyone again next year.
Nancy and Alma, kudos for being our PnP coordinators over the past few years. We’ll miss you both!

Editor’s note: At this time the club is still in need of a volunteer(s) to take over as Porsche and Pancakes coordinator for 2018! This has been a highly attended social event by our membership.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region
SHELBY AMERICAN Up Close and Behind the Scenes, 1962-1965: The Venice Years The time frame covered is that of the design-build-developrace-repeat era of Shelby American in Venice, California, the formative years if you will. In addition to the Cobras, the development of the Daytona Coupes, Ford GT40 and The GT350 Mustangs is covered. SHELBY AMERICAN Up Close and Behind the Scenes tells the story of a small company building virtually home-built cars, unimpeded by outside interference of corporate mentality or government regulations, and beating the 'big boys' on the race track. It is very much a reprise of the Porsche story. There are many pictures of cars in development/modification and on the race track, but to a great degree, this book is about the people of Shelby, and their unique camaraderie. The names that float through this book are a comprehensive who's who of mid century, world-wide motor sport.
T
he complete title of this great book is rather cumbersome; focus on the 'Up Close and Behind the Scenes ' which 'says it all' about this book. Professionally produced, with differing images on the end papers, this book exudes quality – carefully prepared, just like the cars described. The dust jacket has folded edges to prevent tears and make it durable, which is almost a pity - the subtle image on the hard cover itself is worth displaying on your coffee table. And images is what this book is all about. The author was Shelby American's official in-house resident photographer in the 1960s, and this book is a collection of his pictures resurrected from a variety of 'archives' and provided with explanatory captions. Some of the scenes showing the Shelby operation of the early '60s, e.g. the front end papers, seem very similar to 1950's scenes from the Porsche shops. There is no direct Porsche content in this book, but 904s are shown behind (darn) the Cobra's in some of the racing pictures, and Spyder hot-shoes of the '50s - Roger Penske and Bob Holbert - are mentioned as Cobra drivers in the '60s. There is also photographic evidence that George Lucas (the George Lucas no less) spent some of his youth as a Shelby crew member. Extensive quotations and detailed captions for the generally unposed pictures give the book a very personalized feeling. The conversational tone of the captions makes it read like behind the scenes gossip; it really is the inside story.
22
Shelby-American was focused on racing and much of the book is devoted to race coverage, presenting inside stories, not just results. It gives insight into a by-gone era of do-it-yourself, lotech manual work-the Venice shops that produced the cars that won the World Manufacturer's Championship in 1965 did not even have air tools. This is a book with a grass-roots feeling that any motor-sports enthusiast, even Porschephiles, should have. Porschephiles come in multiple 'stripes', but those oriented to the maintenance/repair/modification/construction of cars, or the inthe-pits 'scene' of motor-racing world-wide, will love this book. There are four chapters, one for each of the years covered. There is also an Epilogue that touches briefly on the GT350 production and 1966-67 Shelby-Mustang racing successes. SHELBY AMERICAN Up Close and Behind the Scenes is a hardbound book of 240, 12 in x 9.75 in pages, with 100 color & 200 b-w photos. There is a complete index and a very comprehensive Appendix tabulating Shelby-Ford results from the almost 150 races in which they participated from October '62 through June '67. By the time you read this, it should be available from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from QuatroKnows. com. It is not sacrilege for a Porschephile to have this Shelby book on their coffee table, rather it is a testament to their devotion to motor-sport. SHELBY AMERICAN Up Close and Behind the Scenes, 1962-1965: The Venice Years, by Dave Friedman, published September, 2017 by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Giving Thanks by Danielle Badler
Y
es indeed. It’s November. Time once again to gather with friends and give thanks. Give thanks for how we are blessed in life. In car life. In Porsche life. I’ve compiled a Porsche list of thanks, which I plan to review with my friends and family at our annual Turkey Day. I know, I may be the only one around the table to understand the subtlety of my stories. But that’s ok. Because I’m also sharing them here, with you dear reader. I know, I just know, that if you’re within view of my words, you, at least, will understand. So here goes. I’m thankful that I can still find reverse on my ’78 911SC. With the Momo gear shift knob, the knob that has no insignia on top, no shift pattern. Once, at least a dozen years ago, I had my car serviced at a Porsche dealer. I had settled the account, and stood outside the shop, waiting for my car to be brought around. I waited. And waited. So I strolled up to the shop entrance. And saw a kid sitting in my car, with the engine idling. I walked up to the window and asked him what he was doing. He looked at me and asked, “where’s reverse?” I said, “Get out.” No, he said, he’s supposed to wheel the cars to the customer pick-up area. I said, “sorry, if you don’t know where reverse is, not in my car” and opened the door for him. As he tried to find words to come back at me with, I slid in and backed out my baby … and drove away. I didn’t look back. I’m thankful that I can still get a rise out of my co-pilot. A few years ago, my friend Paige was riding shotgun as we hightailed it up to the Peak to Peak Highway, on our way to Estes Park, Co, for a mass P-brunch. I was third, in the SC, behind a Boxster S and a Carrera. Needless to say, I was working pretty hard to keep up the pace, but I was managing the switchbacks pretty well. We hit a short chute, which gave me time to glance over at Paige. And I noticed that she appeared to have an alabaster complexion I hadn’t seen before. Just before the next hairpin, she barely got out the words “I don’t want to die today.” I’m thankful I can still remember the first 911 I coveted. That had to be ’68. It was maroon, black interior. Owned by the boyfriend of a friend’s older sister. Now, this was an interesting family. The sister drove an Alfa GTV. My friend had an Alfa Giulietta. I was newly ensconced in my first sports car, a ’64 Triumph TR-4. As I recall, the boyfriend told us he recently got the car, and just drove it nonstop, all the way from where we lived in Nassau County, Long Island, to Montauk and back, for the hell of it. I’m thankful I’m still alive.
30
There was the time, in the TR-4, driving with a friend from New York to college in Ohio, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, just after Thanksgiving, believe it or not. We were near Pittsburgh, leaving a rest stop, and it started snowing. Just enough that, as I got into third gear on the entrance ramp, we started sliding sideways, directly toward the center divider. I had the wheel cranked over, but that was doing nothing. Just as I glanced out the left side window at two lanes of oncoming traffic, the tires finally bit, and the car snap-hooked into the left lane, with enough momentum that I could motor forward and accelerate properly. My friend and I didn’t speak for a good 10 minutes. Then we looked at each other. I barely intoned, “we almost died back there.” He nodded. I’m thankful that I still remember the first race I attended. It was the Can-Am, at Bridgehampton, in ’68. Perhaps the pinnacle of the Bruce and Denny Show. I drove out in my TR4. The pace car was a 911 with “Politzei” plastered on the side panels, and a shaft rising from the rear bumper, with a blinking light attached on top. I just thought that was very cool, a real Porsche sports car as a police car, posing as a pace car. I saw the car again, at the Porsche Parade in Hershey, PA in the early 2000s. I’m thankful that I can tell the tale of overhearing Ron Dennis complain to the Porsche factory about the reliability of the TAG engines they were supplying to the McLaren team. It was ’86, at the Hungaroring. The first ever F1 race behind the Iron Curtain. Which seemed to be such a curiosity that I felt like the entire racing community was there. I was working for a major sponsor of the McLaren team, which sort of gave me run of the pits and attendant team facilities. So, after a day of practice, I sauntered off to the motorhome, to get something to drink. I opened the door and … I heard him. There was more, that weekend. Ferrari’s latest, the 288 GTO, sat, locked, at the entrance to the hotel. The entire weekend. Each afternoon, when the drivers came back from practice, they walked through the lobby … to applause. I had dinner with the team the night before the race. I watched Alain Prost with his wife … he drank no alcohol. They excused themselves early, and left dinner. I watched Dan Gurney … really … walk down pit lane, photographing rear suspensions with an Instamatic. There was one night, at the bar, I found myself sitting next to Clay Regazzoni, who was in his wheelchair. I asked him what was his favorite circuit. He said, “Spa.” I said to myself, perfect. Which sort of sums it up for me. I hope you can sum it up for yourself, as well. And join me in giving thanks.

If you are still stumped! The ultimate gift would be a gift certificate for the Porsche Experience Center in LA . https://www.porschedriving.com/home
How it works … Step 1: Select the model car/cars you would like to drive Step 2: Spend 90 minutes behind the wheel with a Porsche Drive Coach Step 3: Smile and enjoy. One of our members, David Schneider, received this as a gift last year and also shared his experience in the March 2017 issue of Going Places. I guess I can go on and on but, I think this is enough of a list to get you started. Happy shopping!
