P
hoenix Flight is quickly approaching. I finally got around to signing up myself. It seems to be a tradition that members wait until the last minute to register, but please do so if you intend to participate so that we can plan. However, it seems that for some events members do not procrastinate. There are over 120 people already registered for our 60th Anniversary Gala at the Phoenix Art Museum. Jen Bartling has done an incredible job in organizing this event and it will definitely be the event of the decade that you won’t want to miss! Our club only functions by the hard work of our volunteers. We are a large and highly active region with nearly 50 events held each year. It takes many people to organize and put these great events on, be it autocross, driver’s education, tours or social events and I am grateful for all who work to keep us so vibrant. We have many volunteers, but it seems that it is often the same small group of people we see doing the work. We have over 1400 members in our region so we should be able to find more people to help. If you enjoy our events or if you have ideas about how we could improve, please consider stepping up to help out at an event or filling a chair position. One of my goals is to allow people to get involved by becoming an assistant chair to help and learn the ropes. Many of the chair roles are straightforward and not difficult, as long as we have many volunteers. Please feel free to contact me or any of our board members to volunteer. By the time you see this, we will likely have had our annual business meeting at Porsche North Scottsdale with elections of board members to replace those who have completed their terms. I want to thank all of the people who have filled these positions and those who have agreed to run for election. ‘Nuff said. Drive safely!

Here are the results from last Saturday’s autocross (September 28th). There are two charts; the chart below is all of your times including penalties. Add 2 seconds to your time for each cone shown. The chart on the right is the TOP TIME OF DAY, which is everyone’s best time then sorted from the fastest to the slowest.

Congratulations to Kim for setting TTOD on the morning runs and then watching it hold up thru the afternoon. We had nearly perfect weather for the first event of the 2019-2020 season. A bit warm in the afternoon, but no complaints for September. We had a number of 1st time participants - We hope you had a great time and will be returning! It was a relatively uneventful day with the exception of a flat tire and one sound violation. Thanks to Jim E for helping Kim and I set up and chalk the course on Friday morning. And thanks to everyone for helping set up the remaining stuff and mostly for taking down and storing the cones and gear at the end of the day!

Sawhill Run to Mount Lemmon by Jim Bultema photos by Jim Bultema
I
believe we Porsche drivers collectively tend to love our cars so much that we don’t like to see them age…as in odometer miles. But on September 28th, 25 drivers watched their loved one’s age gracefully as AZPCA joined forces with the Southern Arizona region for a fun-filled day for a driving tour and lunch to Mount Lemmon. Our first pit stop and meet-up location was at the CVS parking lot in Mesa, not long after big-red was starting her accession. Wiping the sleep from our eyes was worth it just to lay eyes on Porsches of every description, neatly lined up in the parking lot with scores of like fanatics hovering over each car. Mark Baker efficiently broke us away from our stories to go over the day’s activities. He explained we would form up in three groups with a short delay of five minutes between groups as we headed for our second pit stop at the Speedway gas station in Florence. With the “real” pit stop out of the way in Florence, the first group of stunning Porches led the way to meet with our friends from SAR in Tucson. With our fill of the flat desert scenery we were all happy to see another large group of Porsche lovers’ gathered at McDonalds. The huge parking lot was filled to overflowing with the likes of nearly 60 cars of every color, size and description. It was truly a picturesque site to behold. Staying on time, Lee Cuevas quickly took charge and gathered us all up to give us the plans for the twisting drive up Mount Lemmon. We were divided into three large groups that would leave about 10 minutes apart to relieve pressure on the restaurant for the 95 plus in attendance. It was suggested that the drivers pay special attention for the bicyclists that use Mount Lemmon for fun and many to train for races. This information would prove useful a short time later.
All participants getting briefed for the drive up Mount Lemmon.

Drive briefing by Mark.
McDonalds pit stop!
Like the green flag to start a race, as soon as Lee was finished, the first group was off in a neat, tight, formation. There is nothing like looking in your rear view mirror or straight ahead and seeing Porsches in line accelerating up the mountain. Staying close to the speed limit, it was exhilarating to stretch the legs of our cars and feel the mountain air surround you as we drove toward the deep blue sky just over the horizon. As we neared our destination, we had several tight downhill curves. This was great fun until several bicyclists passed us causing many to swerve to avoid contact. It seemed nothing bothered these racers as many took to the center of the road to set up for the numerous curves. Once we were past them, we arrived at our meeting spot, Sawhill Run restaurant. With plenty of outdoor tables, members enjoyed a tasty lunch and delicious conversations. With the event officially over at this point, many stayed into the afternoon enjoying the scores of Porsches and their drivers.
Drive up Mount Lemmon.
It was a fabulous event with great stories, great cars and great scenery. Along with meeting new friends, this driving tour can’t help but stay with you as one plans for the next excursion.
Lots of twisties.
What a view!

2020 Board of Directors Candidates I desire the opportunity to be the Secretary of our great club. I’m a Nurse Manager, of Clinical Services Operations - Field Management for Fresenius Health Partners and oversee our field operations for the western US. As exciting as that sounds, it merely funds my true passion of my family and Porsches.
SECRETARY Jack Arnold
I’ve been a Porsche guy my entire life. From the moment I was brought home from the hospital in my father’s 356B, Porsches have been in my DNA. I’ve owned numerous 914s, a 912E, a SC, a 964, a 997C2S until my most recent 997C4S Cab, which my wife rewarded me with for losing 100lbs! I want to use my passion to give back and contribute to those who share my same passion for every car with a Porsche badge on it. I love every aspect of the PCA. I have fond memories of detailing my family’s cars before every concourse, yearly trips to Fiesta del Porsche in Santa Fe as a child, numerous autocross, DEs and club races. The people, experiences, and cars are the reason we all do this. I’m originally from a small town in western Nebraska and before relocating, was a member of the Rocky Mountain Region. The first event that my family attended when we moved to Arizona was Flight 38. My wife and I are excited to share our passion of Porsches with our kids, which luckily are still small enough to squeeze into the back seat of our 997! I believe that this passion and background would allow me to serve well on the board and collaborate with others on the board to further the great work that those before me have paved the way for.
TREASURER Andrew Grossman I moved to Valley from Chicago in 2005 with my wife and our 3 rescue dogs and we absolutely love it here. After graduating from Indiana University with an MBA in finance I spent almost 15 years as co-manager and trader for a small London-based fixed income hedge fund. Following a 20+ year Wall Street career I recently left to start a dog accessory business with my wife. I couldn’t be happier with life now. I have been interested in cars for as long as I can remember, I used to love to visit the Chicago auto show each year and dream about which car I’d someday buy. My love of Porsches started when I first laid eyes on a 959 my local dealer had on display and it was the coolest car I had ever seen. Many years later I purchased my first Porsche, a 2006 atlas grey 911 Carrera S. I then moved onto a 2010 GT3 and I joined PCA not long after in 2015. I now have a 2015 911 Turbo S and while I hope to keep and enjoy it for many years, I suspect I’ll swap it for a different 911 in the future. In my free time I enjoy hiking, traveling, playing tennis and watching college football. I hope you provide me the opportunity to serve as AZPCA treasurer for the next term.

I have been an AZPCA member for three years where I have attended club meetings, Sunday drives and drivers education events.
TREASURER Rick Forbes
I have owned Porsches for fifteen years and through the years have only increased my passion for the mark as well as the enjoyable people you meet. I have spent the last 35 years working in information technologies, leading software development teams and managing budgets. I have recently retired and would like to contribute to the AZPCA’s success. I ask for your vote to allow me to contribute to the AZPCA as treasurer
Directors At Large Candidates Greg Mannion
I am seeking a two year re-election to the AZPCA Director-at-Large position. This position over the past two years has allowed me to meet and get to know many club members. I currently own a 2009 911S Cabriolet. I am in my eighth year as a member of the AZPCA and I have regularly attended club meetings, socials, breakfasts and have participated in Flight, Autocross and Driver Education events. I have also been a contributor to Going Places magazine and have attended PCA judging school. I have also served as President and in various board positions on other social and hobby club board of directors and enjoyed giving back to the communities they serve. I intend to continue to contribute to the AZPCA in a function that best serves the membership and helps to promote comradery within the club and overall PCA. I ask for your vote to allow me to continue to serve the AZPCA as a member of the Board of Directors.
Rook Younger
I am very pleased to submit my name for consideration as a director on the AZPCA Board of Directors. I served as AZPCA President for two years (2015-2016), and am very proud of our Region’s being awarded National PCA Region of the Year for 2016. I served as Vice President prior to being elected president, and am currently AZPCA Driving Tour Chair. In addition to previous service on the board of directors and planning and leading Driving Tours as Chair, I have been involved in numerous other areas in support of the club: providing editing assistance for Going Places, assisting with the club website content, creating and providing administrative support for event registration functions on the club’s registration site (MotorsportReg.com), volunteering to help with events such as Flight and the annual Holiday Party, mentoring and assisting others in event planning and execution, and participating in the many social activities, performance driving events, and other happenings we all enjoy as Porsche enthusiasts. My vision for the Arizona Region is to provide an environment where membership in the club is central to people’s enjoyment of their cars with others of like interest. As a director I will strive to make the club the best it can be for every member of the AZPCA. My working career was spent almost entirely with Salt River Project, including over 33 years in engineering and information technology. I spent six years managing a technical team which supported the e-mail system on which over 4,000 users depended to do their jobs. During much of my career my responsibilities centered on assisting others: technical training and support, mentoring, consulting, and planning, developing, and facilitating the implementation of technical solutions. After retiring from SRP I spent ten years as an employee of the Arizona Diamondbacks as a Tour Guide at Chase Field. I look forward to the opportunity to serve you as a representative on the Board of Directors. With the capable leadership of other members of the board, and the contributions of those who generously offer their time and effort as volunteers, we will have another successful year in 2020. he Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen is now ten years old. Why did it take me so long to visit it? Misplaced priorities? Too many buckets on my list? Whatever, I finally made it in September 2019. Although my visit was late, the timing was perfect because the current special exhibition is “917 Colours of Speed – 50 Years of Porsche 917.” After a delicious lunch in the Boxenstopp bistro, Kelly and I stared through a glass wall at the restorations and maintenance underway in the Museum workshop before beginning a private 90-minute tour of the Museum with a knowledgeable and friendly guide. The entire spectrum of Porsche engineering prowess was to be seen – from the 1898 Egger-Lohner electric vehicle to the Mission E concept car – with a full range of street and race cars in between. My favorites were an early Volkswagen “Beetle,” the No. 1 356, a 901, and the race cars, including a Type 64 body, the 804 F1 car, a 550 RS Spyder, the sleek 904, the much replicated 964 Carrera RS 2.7, the Penskecampaigned RS Spyder LMP2, the three time LeManswinning 919 hybrid, and a Cayman GT4 Clubsport (like my own racecar). ou would think that after our 25 day road trip we would stay home for a while. Instead, after being home for less than two weeks, we embarked on another road trip. Where your ask? A great 7 day drive to Yosemite National Park and to Paso Robles for wine tasting.with members, Rick Forbes, Trish and Milt Feltch. Mark promised me he will write an article about the drive for next month’s issue of Going Places. This issue is full of great stories, articles and photos. Make sure to read “The Treffen That Wasn’t”. It is about our 25 day journey to the East Coast. There are also a lot of events planned for November. Especially our 60th AZPCA Anniversary Gala. Make sure to sign up now! Don’t miss out on this celebration. Always check our website calendar at: AZ.PCA.ORG for up to the minute information. The winner of the Writer’s Drawing for the November issue of Going Places is Jim Bultema for “Sawhill Run to Mount Lemmon”. He will receive a $30. credit on Motorsportreg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. I truly appreciate the articles and pictures you all send to me. It makes my job easier as the editor. I hope to see you at 60th Anniversary Gala.

ere are the results from last Saturday’s autocross (October 19th). There are two charts; the chart below is all of your times including penalties. Add 2 seconds to your time for each cone shown. The chart on the right is the TOP TIME OF DAY, which is everyone’s best time then sorted from the fastest to the slowest. Congratulations to Kim for setting Top Time Of Day! Great weather conditions with temperatures finally in the comfort range, a good number of friends, a nice meal provided by Pat the Hot Dog Lady, and interesting cars made for a very enjoyable day. Special thanks to Ken O, Jim E, Mike T, and David F for helping us set up the course on Friday. Thanks to everyone else for helping set up and then tear down and clean up at the end of the event. We look forward to seeing everyone again in November on Veteran’s Day at the AMP road course. Kim and Rick

The Treffen That Wasn’t by Angela Manente
Let me explain how our planning to take a road trip back East got started. When we attended Treffen Santa Barbara, they announced that the Fall Treffen 2019 was going to be held in Woodstock, Vermont. Seeing that we have family and friends to visit, we thought this could be a fun journey in our 2017 Panamera. We purposely bought the car so we could do more road trips in comfort! Originally, we were only going to be gone around 14 days and leave our dog behind with the sitter. Fast forward to June 2019, registration for Treffen Woodstock opened online at noon (MST). I had it marked on my calendar but was distracted that day due to a car warning light that my reverse gear was unavailable and an eye doctor’s appointment to get to! Long story short, I forgot about registering until Mark asked me later in the day. By then it was too late and Treffen Woodstock was already sold out!
Mark’s favorite road sign in Oklahoma.
We didn’t let that change our plans to drive East. In fact, it turned out for the best because we were able to stop and see friends from college along the way in Ohio and Pennsylvania, visit with family in Connecticut, meet up with other friends for a two day stay in Woodstock,Vermont, go to Maine to stay with friends and spend a week on Cape Cod. All in all we were gone for 25 days and took our mini-labradoodle, Stella, along too! All packed up and ready to go the morning of August 30th. The first few stops were uneventful; Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Effingham, IL and then the fun begins on day 4, Monday, September 2nd, Labor Day. We were traveling east on I-70 in Indiana about 80 miles from the Ohio border when we encountered road construction. The informational signs were informing trucks to move over into the left lane. A semi pulled out in front of us, which Mark was not too happy about! He switched lanes over to the right just in time to hit the biggest pothole you could imagine. We did not get any tire warning light on the dash so we continued to drive for about 80 miles until we stopped for lunch. While getting sandwiches at Subway, upon returning to the car there was a huge bubble from the tire protruding from the rim. Mark was considering driving the car to the Porsche dealership about 30 minutes away in Miamisburg, Ohio, but I was totally not in agreement with this. As he was calling Porsche Roadside Assistance, the tire popped and the tire deflated! I guess that solved our debate about driving the car to the dealership. We waited about 45 – 60 minutes for the tow truck to arrive. While waiting for the tow truck, I got busy looking for a hotel close to the dealership that would take dogs. I consider us very lucky that’s all we had to wait because it was a holiday. It didn’t take very long to drive the car up on the truck for the 30 minute ride to drop the car off at the Porsche dealership. After unloading the car and gathering our belongings, we were picked up by Uber to check into the Homewood Suites for the night.
| 26 |
Not going anywhere anytime soon!
Unloading the car at the dealership.
There was nothing else that could be done at this point because of the holiday. We were close enough to a shopping mall that we could walk to get dinner. Tuesday morning we would find out how long we would be delayed waiting for a 21” tire to be ordered and mounted. Mark spoke to the Porsche Service Department as soon as they opened Tuesday morning. Now for the bad news! Best case scenario, they would get the tire in on Wednesday late afternoon and maybe have it mounted early evening. Instead of letting this ruin our plans to see friends in Salem (about 4 hours east of Miamisburg), we decided to rent a car and head out to stay with them until Wednesday afternoon. It made no sense to stay in Miamisburg. We had a great visit with our friends from college days and will connect up with them when they come out to Scottsdale for a visit next year. Our Panamera was ready to go early evening on Wednesday, but we were not back in time from Salem to pick it up. First thing Thursday morning, we picked up the car, dropped off the rental and we were back on the road heading to our next stop, overnight in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

In hindsight, we were lucky the front tire didn’t blow while driving 70-75 mph because we could have had a serious accident. I believe Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, was watching over us. Since we lost at least 2 days from our planned trip, it made us rearrange where we were going and how long we were going to stay at each stop. Instead of going from Pennsylvania up to Maine we stopped in Connecticut to visit family for the weekend, then up to Woodstock, Vermont for 2 days, then up to Maine for 3 days and shortened our stay in Cape Cod from 9 days to 6 days (since we have been there many times before). If we had been registered to go to Treffen, we would have missed almost all of it due to the flat tire! It’s pretty amazing how things seem to have a way of working themselves out for the best. My most favorite part of the trip was Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor, Maine. This was our first time to Maine. Our friends showed us a real good time. We went to Acadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain. Did you know that Cadillac Mountain is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and the first place to view sunrise in the United States from October 7 through March 6? We also enjoyed lobsta rolls, scallops and lots of clam chowdah. Mark being the foodie that he is, saw a segment on TV abut homemade pie shops and one of them, Two Fat Cats Bakery, was on our way in Portland. We made a quick stop off the highway and bought a Wild Maine Blueberry pie. Our friends had vanilla ice cream and we all pigged out on the most delicious pie ever. On the way down the coast to Cape Cod we stopped again in Portland and bought two pies (one mixed berry and another wild blueberry).
Lunch on the waterfront in Bar Harbor. To die for lobsta rolls and clam chowdah!
I also enjoyed our short stay in Woodstock, Vermont with our friends from New Hampshire, that meet us there. It is a quaint New England town with many twisty roads and covered bridges. I can see why they had the Treffen here. Continued on page 28

The Treffen That Wasn’t (continued from page 27) We checked out the Woodstock Inn where the event was held and had dinner there. We stayed at The Shire Inn down the street. It was a little less expensive. We had a spacious, two room suite on the lower level facing the river. This made it very easy for walking Stella. Sorry we missed the Treffen event! Cape Cod weather was awesome and again there were many fun twisty roads. Unfortunately for me, Mark did all the driving for the entire trip, up and back! We saw friends while we were there and enjoyed long walks on the beach and more lobsta and clam chowdah. Our minilabradoodle didn’t want to have anything to do with going in the water. Can’t quite figure that one out since she is part Labrador retriever. The return trip home was uneventful, thank God. Just 6 long days driving back with overnight stops in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Bristol,Virginia, Memphis,Tennessee, Yukon,Missouri, Albuquerque, New Mexico and finally home. We did do a special stop on our way back in New Haven, Connecticut to get Frank Pepe’s pizza and ate it at a roadside stop, It is ranked right up there with Pizzeria Bianco in downtown Phoenix.
Quaint little New England town, Woodstock, VT.
We were planning to finally stop to see the Petrified Forest National Park, east of Holbrook off I-40, but when we got to the exit is was raining, so we didn’t go. We’ve only passed it by at least 10 times when we were traveling back and forth to Minnesota as snow birds! All in all, we were gone for 25 days and on the road for 18 days. The road trip was about 6,500 miles round-trip. Stella was the best one in the car the whole time. Would I do another long road trip again? The jury is still out! Maybe, if I get to drive part of the way. Travel tips: Don’t stay at the Baymont Inn in Oklahoma City (very old, dirty) we checked in and checked right back out. Stayed at a brand new hotel, Mainstay Suites Bricktown – Near downtown Oklahoma City. Awesome! Effingham, IL – We ate at a great farm to table restaurant – Firefly Grill – It was a pleasant surprise to find such a wonderful place to eat while on the road. They were even pet friendly out on the covered porch. It was a lovely evening. Portland, ME – Two Fat Cats Bakery for wild Maine blueberry pie. New Haven, CT – Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria for pizza.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region
F1 MAVERICKS: The Men and Machines that Revolutionized Formula 1 Racing
I
f you do not recognize the author’s names from their work with Road & Track, Car and Driver, Autoweek, etc., then maybe the Foreword by Mario Andretti and the Afterword by Nicki Lauda will help you believe in the credibility of this book. Very well illustrated with different pictures on the front and back covers, covers uniquely devoid of writing. Front and back end papers have two more great, two-page spread, pictures. The ‘publishers page’ provides good captions for the cover pictures, except strangely, for the rear end paper which shows a gaggle of racers heading downhill to Eau Rouge at the start of the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa. The horizontal format is very fitting to the lo-profile, cigar shaped bodies of the prewing racers of the ‘60s and early ‘70s. It is a book about racing, essentially a chronology of Formula 1 racing from 1958 through 1982. Interspersed between race reports are pages profiling the ‘Maverick’ designers, team managers and car owners, and what they did to stand out from the crowd. The race reports themselves are interesting discussions of the highlights of the event, not statistical data about who passed whom and who finished where in the standings. Though there is an index, there is no summary page listing the Mavericks described; they are not even alluded to in the race-year titles of the 14 chapters. You have to pursue the entire book to appreciate all of the Mavericks profiled. Very nice touch for the casual reader is that the chapter number and the chapter title are printed at the lower corners of the left and right pages respectively. In this 25 year period, the previous fifty odd years of race car evolution was submerged by a revolution of lasting changes – from front engine to rear-engine, from

Carburetors to Fuel Injection, from naturally aspirated to and Turbo Charging, from tall skinny tires to low fat ones, etc. and perhaps most significant of all, from a mentality of racing as a sport to one of racing as big business. If you are interested in the historic people of F1 racing, or even the development of motorsport technology in general, F1 MAVERICKS is a must have. Nowhere else can one find within the covers of a single book, such a breadth of biographical info about the individuals and cars which made significant impacts on Formula 1 racing. Though Roger Penske did not make it to Maverick status, his PC4 Formula 1 car is shown, A Porsche F1 car is mentioned as secondary to the 917 program. Not a topic covered in the book, but it is striking to this reviewer how prominent were the car numbers used in those days. Though the significant differences in car design made many of them instantly recognizable, the big, bright numbers made it very easy to follow a driver’s progress through the pack. Since approximately 1977, race car oriented wind tunnels with rolling ground planes (and regulations) have lead to the homogenization of body shapes, making prominent numbers even more useful, just when they started to get lost in all the advertising graphics. F1 MAVERICKS by Peter Brio and George Levy. published August, 2019 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA. It is hard bound, with 240 heavyweight 11x9 inch pages and 300 color and b&w photos, many full page. It should be available for $50 from your favorite book seller (ask for it) or from quartoknows.com

R U Manual or Automatic?
S
o, let me ask you car enthusiasts a question that’s been weighing on my mind: Manual or Automatic? Why do I want to know? If you’ve spent as much time perusing the web as I have, you already know the lay of the land on the usual suspects like ‘Bring-a-Trailer’, ‘Rennlist’ or ‘6-Speed’: Manual transmission – Yes. Automatic transmission – HELL NO.
Pointing at a nearby GT3, I mentioned that it only came with PDK. “It’s the best way to get around the track as fast as possible,” I said.
It seems the argument is very particular and personal when it comes to Porsches. How many times has a Porsche with Tiptronic or PDK come up for sale and the purists claim that if there’s no third pedal, the Porsche in question falls into the ‘unworthy’ category? Based on my casual calculations, it comes up within the first four or five postings.
“I searched the whole country for a car in that color with PDK. After 40+ years of doing clutch work, I deserved a break,” I added.
You’ve read them, right? For instance, there’s a great looking, low mileage 996 Turbo with choice options. But wait - one glaring thing gets some of the posters’ tongues (or keyboards) a wagging. The Thing? The car has a Tip! Suddenly poster XYZ claims that he’d never buy a Tip. How could anyone ever consider buying a Porsche with anything but a manual transmission? Of course, poster XYZ has never bought, let alone bid on an actual car, manual or automatic transmission. Are there Tip defenders? Sure. For example, poster ABC mentions how he appreciates not having to row gears in city traffic or how he wants a 996 Turbo just for cruising. Of course, poster XYZ then responds with “hey @ABC, why don’t you consider a Mercedes SL instead, Mr. Wimp.” Then their posts are instantly kicked off as being inappropriate. It just wears me out.
He nodded. “Uh huh, that’s what I hear.” I pointed to my own nearby car; it has a PDK.
“Yeah, I hear those PDK’s are pretty nice.” “So I have to ask, if you’re a manual-‘til-you-die sort, does that mean you only like wind-up windows, no AC, AM-FM radio – because a cassette player is pushing it a bit, don’t you think? And no Cruise Control? Man, that’s what your right foot is for.” I added only half kidding. “Point taken.” He turned and strolled towards the next car, peered into the interior and made another hash. I get it. A manual gives you that direct connection to the drive train. Then there’s that visceral feeling of moving the gearshift through the gates. And heel-and-toeing as you rapidly downshift is amazing. From what I read, Porsche sells the most manual transmissions in the U.S. market. But count me among the converts; the PDK is pretty awesome. And as a bonus, my left calf muscle no longer looks like a nice-sized salad plate.
At a recent Porsche event I ran into a guy with a note pad, who was going from car to car making notations on the pad. He glanced inside a 993 Cab and proclaimed “Yep, a real Porsche!” Then he made a mark on the pad. I strolled over to him. Glancing at the pad, I saw he’d added a hash in a ‘Real Porsche’ column. I just couldn’t help myself.
Will I buy another manual transmission car? What?! Of course I will, in a second. But it will be a classic like a 951 or 968. And it sure as hell will have the original cassette player because when you’re going manual, you may as well be completely Old School.
“What ‘cha doing?”
RL Turner is the author of The Driver, a series of action adventure novels, available in both print and ebook on Amazon (more info at www.thedriver-series.com). Having owned a dozen Porsches and driven hundreds of laps on racetracks throughout the southwest, author Turner knows a few things about going fast in a Porsche and then fixing them when he breaks something.
“Counting Porsches to see which ones are real and which ones aren’t.” “Ya don’t say…where are you at?”
And on that exhaust note, see you all next time.
“About 50/50.” “Hmmm” Glancing around the parking lot I said, “I don’t see anything but real Porsches. Am I missing something?” He looked at his pad again and recounted. He looked up. G O I N G P L A C E S 811.2019
