ell, we are mostly through our busy fall season. Both Phoenix Flight and our 60th Anniversary Gala were big successes. The collection of historic race cars at the Phoenix Art Museum was exceptional and never has such a spectacular collection of iconic cars been gathered in one place. It will be on display until March 15th, so go see it if you missed our gala. These club events would not have been so great had it not been for the tireless work of Jen Bartling. She has been amazing and I am very grateful to have her planning these events for the region. She is not alone as events like these are a team effort and I thank David Fisher, Jim Roberts, Rook Younger and Betsy Andrade for their efforts, too. The Holiday Gala will be our last big event of the year with introduction of our new board members and a collection of gift cards for Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks. Last weekend was hectic, as I attended the Zone 8 Presidents’ meeting in California before rushing back for the 60th Anniversary event. This is always a great meeting since the Presidents share their challenges and successes and I always come away with some new ideas and motivations. Some of these are: a) a joint board meeting of the three Arizona Regions to develop ways we can work together more effectively, b) a mid summer model car concour (one region planned this for kids but turns out there were many “older” kids with prize models) and c) a TSD rally where no checkpoint workers are needed since a cell phone GPS app records the time and locations and reports back to the rally master. There were other ideas, such as reviewing our bylaws to insure they are relevant and being upheld. I was surprised that some regions are contentious and chaotic to the point they have had to create and ask members to sign codes of conduct (note PCA has guidelines). We are fortunate that we have a respectful, collegial and well operating organization (not to say we don’t have disagreements) but we work together well. I am grateful and proud of our region for this. As I said last month, this region relies on its volunteers. We usually see the same faces and we are appreciative of their support; however, it is important that we continue to bring fresh faces into the management of our region. Sometimes people think the job would be too hard or they won’t know what they are doing, but I assure you we will all help you enjoy whatever you volunteer for and you will create lasting memories and gain many new friends. Please consider volunteering, even if it is just to sit at a registration desk for an hour. To a great year, and an even better one next year! ‘Nuff said. Drive safely...

Yosemite National Park and Wine Country Tour by Mark Manente photos by Milt Feltch

I

n 2018, Angela and I joined the San Diego region on their 12 day National Park/Winery Tour from Carlsbad to Yosemite, Napa, Sonoma, and the Pacific Coast Highway to Cambria. The Southern California region plans many week long tours. I thought it would be fun to plan and conduct a National Park/Wine Country Tour from Phoenix. . While on last years Alpine tour, I mentioned the trip to a few people. As I was planning the tour, I sent an email to a few friends and extended an invitation to join us. Newly retired Rick Forbes, Milt and Tricia Feltch adjusted their schedules and decided to join the adventure. A preliminary route was sent out with the idea of keeping the daily drive under 5 ½ hours. Milt responded with some great suggestions; taking the Death Valley route, a stop at Mono Lake which is just west of Bishop, California and the best suggestion of all, drive down the Pacific Coast Highway from Yosemite. Great feedback, so I reworked the tour.

Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park.

We met on Sunday, October 12th, in Litchfield for the usual trip to Las Vegas. The Wynn was much more crowded then I expected on a Sunday, but the rate was reasonable and we could self park. We met for dinner at an Italian restaurant in the Venetian. Not much luck in the casino and I lost my limit. In the morning (Monday), Rick joined Angela and I for brunch. The brunch at the Wynn was great. I figured a big breakfast would help sustain us on the route west through Death Valley. After a short fuel/bio stop in Pahrump, we headed towards Bella Vista Road, a short cut to CA 127/190 Death Valley. If you drive through Death Valley, Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park, is a must stop. It must be a spectacular view either at sunrise or sunset. I planned a lunch stop at a restaurant, Badwater Saloon, in Stovepipe Wells. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but it was a terrific spot. We hit some great curves from Panamint Springs to Father Crowley Overlook, on our way to CA 395 and Bishop, California.

Mono Lake.

Our little group enjoyed surprisingly good barbecue in Bishop and gathered at the Creekside Inn fire pit for a few cocktails after dinner. If you are ever in Bishop, you have to stop at Erick Shat’s Bakery, Home of the Original Sheepherder Bread. We were in luck. I knew there wasn’t an opportunity for a lunch stop on our way through Yosemite, so we decided to stock up on “Sheepherder Bread”, cheese, prosciutto, salami, wine and the best olive tapenade.

| 14 |

Yosemite break!

Rick was prescient enough to bring along a great cooler, plates, cups and plastic utensils. We made a stop at Mono Lake to view the limestone formations. Unfortunately, the water level was high, due to the snow melt, and we could only see the tops of many of the formations. We made many overlook stops along the way, and we found a place to have lunch. Milt was the tour’s unofficial photographer. We finally entered Yosemite and were pleased at how many slower drivers allowed us to pass. Visibility in the Yosemite Valley was obscured by smoke from a fire that was started by lightening. We could not believe the number of Ford Mustang convertibles we saw while driving through Yosemite. Car rental companies in Northern California must be well stocked with Mustang convertibles. We had to keep the windows closed even though the temperature begged to leave them open. Our lodging for Tuesday and Wednesday was at Tenaya Lodge, which is just outside the Park. I chose Tenaya because Angela and I stayed there one night with the San Diego region’s tour. The next day Rick, Angela and I signed up for the Lodge’s open coach 6 hour tour of Yosemite National Park. Milt and Tricia decide to explore on their own.

Half Dome.

Yosemite National Park was the highlight of the trip because we all got to enjoy the views and Angela did not have to be the navigator! What can you say about Yosemite? Must see; Bridal Veil falls, El Capitan and Glacier Point. Fortunately, the smoke from the fires, cleared to view the climbers on El Capitan. Over dinner we reflected on our day. I don’t know how many photographs Milt took along the way, but we can’t wait to see the slide show once he has the time to edit the photos. On Thursday, October 17th, we left Yosemite and drove towards the Pacific Coast Highway and Cambria, to our Wine Country destination, Paso Robles. With a little pre planning, Trish made lunch reservations at Nepenthe. It is perched on a Big Sur cliffside offering California fare and a terrace with breathtaking views of the ocean. It is a popular location and parking was at a premium. The Pacific Coast Highway drive was terrific except for the curse of the white mini vans. When one pulled over another one decided to pull out in front of us a few miles down the road. The heard of Mustangs were also prevalent along State Route 1. At least they were a little more spirited than the mini vans. We visited a few wineries in Paso Robles and joined a new wine club, L’Aventure. The rolling hills and vineyards were spectacular. Following the recommendation of a local, we had lunch at Cass Winery, which was terrific. Our tour was to have ended here with the drive home to Arizona. However, the group decided to make our way to Santa Barbara for the afternoon and dinner at a great Italian restaurant before heading back on Sunday morning.

Bridal Veil falls.

Yosemite National Park and Wine Country Tour (Continued from page 15) It was a great week long 2000 mile road trip. It would be terrific for a September/October AZPCA tour. If any of you would be interested in participating in a National Park/Wine Country tour in the future, let me know.

Porsches and Pancakes - Pinnacle Grille by Dennis Rood photos by Dennis Rood and Mark Shevitz

Hi Everyone,

I

am a “Rain Bird” from Seattle, who spends the falls and winters here in Arizona at the loveliest time of the year. My wife, Nancy, and I have been members of the Pacific Northwest region for 36 years and about 4 years ago joined and started to get active with AZPCA when we were here. Last spring I attended a cars and coffee at Alpio’s at Troon on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Alpio Barbara is a business man from the San Francisco Bay area, who moved for part of the year to Arizona where he bought a building in a business complex in the Troon North/Pinnacle Peak area. This small gathering (maybe 150 people and 60 cars) he has every second Tuesday of the month from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Last year when I went there a couple of times I thought that the Pinnacle Grille, across the street, would be a good place to host a Porsches and Pancakes. We enjoy those very much and I spoke to Camille Miles about it and she said set it up. I put on the web site to come early and look at the cars and then come over to breakfast at 8:00 a.m. Everyone seemed to have a good time. On Saturday, November 9th, nearly 100 enthusiastic AZPCA members attended the morning Porsches and Pancakes event at the Pinnacle Grille.

The breakfast menu included: eggs benedict, roasted potatoes with bell peppers and onions, Pinnacle Grille pancakes, scrambled eggs, applewood bacon, pork sausage, english muffins, toast, fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee. Alpio sponsored a contribution jar for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital charity. Last year, with matching funds from Alpio, the complex owner and other like-minded people they were able to contribute OVER $500,000. I passed a hat at breakfast and the AZPCA members that were present contributed $176., which was matched by the owner of the Pinnacle Grille as a contribution to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. We have found the members in AZPCA as friendly and fun as our Pacific Northwest region, those I have met over the years at many Parade weeks and any other club we have come in contact with throughout the country. I have also had the pleasure of judging at the last two Flight Concours, which have been very well done. We hope to see you at the next Porsches and Pancakes and other events through the winter and spring. All the best!

can’t believe another year is almost over, but we still have more club events planned; autocross, driver education, member meeting and the holiday party. Don’t miss signing up for our Holiday Gala being held at Ancala Golf and Country Club on December 14th. Also, check out the club calendar for January and February upcoming events. For those of you that didn’t attend our 60th Anniversary Gala, you missed the party of the year. We had over 200 members. Wow! Kudos to Jen Bartling for all the planning that made this event a big success and Steve Sapareto for getting such a wonderful speaker. Mark and I are glad we didn’t miss this event. See all the photos on our website at: https://www.azpcaphotos.com/AZPCA-SocialEvents/60th-Anniversary-Gala/ Welcome our newest sponsor, Protective Film Solutions. Check out their ad on page 11. They offer PCA members a 10% discount. Mark and I have been customers of theirs for many of our cars and are always satisfied with the service. The winner of the Writer’s Drawing for the December issue of Going Places is Mark Manente for “Yosemite National Park and Wine Country Tour”. He will receive a $30. credit on Motorsportreg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. Hope to see you at the Holiday Gala on Saturday, December 14th. Happy Holidays to you all!

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region

111 PORSCHE STORIES THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW 111 PORSCHE STORIES THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW, by Wilfried Muller, published 2018 by Emons Verlag GmbH, Grermany.

T

o this reviewer, the hubris of the “you should” in the title was rather off-putting. The “111” cliché wasn't much more inspiring, but I bought the book anyway. You should do likewise. The 'stories' are actually concise, interesting and informative articles/anecdotes about events relating to Porsche the company and Porsche the car. They are all well written and very readable. Divided into 15 sections, the 'stories' cover Porsche related activities from 1899 to at least 2015 – the Mission E described in detail. The stories are not fiction, but are factual descriptions of events involving members of the Porsche family and/or Porsche cars. All are one page, with a facing full-page illustration. Gems of history presented include the fact that the 1900 Lohner-Porsche model was named Semper Vivus (translation Always Alive), referring to the fact that it was a 'hybrid' – an electric car with gasoline engines to keep the battery charged while traveling! Other tidbits of Porsche history, such as why the very first 911 Turbo was specially equipped with clear (non-tinted) glass, are sprinkled throughout the book. Conveniently, every page of the numbered articles is labeled with the heading of the section to which it relates, and a title and a sub-title for the article itself. All very helpful for understanding the context of each article. The first section Key Figures gives biographical summaries of 13 individuals, most of whom have names familiar to Porschephiles, but about whom few details have been known.

| 28 |

This reviewer found the presentation of the details of their personalities and contributions to Porsche, along with a full page picture of them 'at work', to be most enlightening. Actually, there are additional informative bios in the section At the Pit Wall and in Racing Drivers. Truly a unique collection of biographical summaries of Porsche family members, corporate leaders, racing department executives and drivers. Sections Milestones, Extremists (cars not people), Porsche Art, Prototypes, Cliff Hangers, Magic Words, etc., contain much more car and company oriented information. There are articles about eleven 911s cast in concrete, the innovative approach to crash testing a 904, and of course, a description of the discovery of how to make the 917 handle. Also told is a summary of Porsche's various attempts to create a 4-seater, starting with the model 754 T7 in 1959. This book is a fascinating read filled with interesting information. Every Porschephile should have a copy as a way to acquire, in small easy doses, a comprehensive knowledge of the meaning of Porsche. But be forewarned, that after 169 pages set in Europe, the picture leading the section Magic Words, a picture showing a rally checkpoint in Joshua Tree National Monument with an early Healy, a Triumph TR2, part of an XK120 (and a yellow-plate Speedster), comes up as a shock! 111 PORSCHE STORIES is hardbound with an illustrated cover (no dust jacket) and contains 304, 10-1/2 x 8 inch pages on heavy weight paper, There are more than 111 high quality full-page photographs. It is probably not available at your favorite bookseller, but as this is being written, Amazon Books has it for $22.80. A real bargain for a significant compilation of Porsche lore.

See It, See It Now by Danielle Badler

If you haven’t seen it, please see “Ford v Ferrari.” I just saw it, at my local cineplex. But wait, you say. It’s now gone from your local big screen. No matter. Then it’s sure to have moved to Netflix or some pay per view service, now or any minute now. Go, scan, check your local listings. Seek it out, and watch. Watch … the … film.

“Ford v Ferrari” is an opportunity that just doesn’t come along very often. I’ve been trying to chronicle the star-making machinery around the film. Of course there’s the late-night TV talk show appearances by Matt Damon and Christian Bale, the leads. But how about them both on “Today?” Matt on “Ellen DeGeneres?”

Why am I so emphatic? Yes, yes, the film’s very entertaining. More on that later. But there’s another matter. And it affects us all – anybody who calls himself or herself an enthusiast. The fact is that we need to support cars and racing. And cars and racing films. If we don’t, who will? Read my lips.

How about Forbes? Forbes! They ran a story under the headline “Ford vs. Ferrari: The Real Story Behind the Most Bitter Rivalry in Auto Racing.” And it’s not bad.

And then we need to register our support, by buying that ticket at the multiplex, or giving Nielsen a tick on our home viewing patterns. We need to have it aggregated and duly noted. Why? So that, wherever and whenever another cinematic project involving Castrol and burning rubber and turbos and steering wheels is concerned, there’s an acknowledgement among the suits all seated at the conference table that there is, indeed, an audience out there. Want proof? Ok, do you watch racing on TV? Of course you do. And do you ever get hounded by questions like, “how can you just sit there and watch cars go round and round?” And “what are you doing, waiting for a crash to happen?” Of course you do. We’re a fragile minority. Let me tell you a true story. Many years ago, when “Le Mans” came out, I had a summer job as a gopher at CBS headquarters in Manhattan. My actual job is not important. But what was important is that I would get invitations to private screenings of new films. They came from Cinema Center Films, which was a subsidiary or division or whatever of CBS. And, one day, an invite came to view “Le Mans.” It seems Cinema Center Films was a producer. When the day arrived, I got to the screening room maybe a half hour early, lunch and a drink in tow, in order to get properly situated for the screening. Nobody else was there. In fact, the room didn’t fill up until maybe 30 seconds before the film began. No matter, I was ready. Of course, I was enthralled. I was taken to a higher place. What an experience, I thought, what a ride. Then the lights came up … and I blinked once or twice … I got adjusted to the light … and realized I was the only soul left in the screening room. Seems everyone else had up and left, sometime during the showing. That’s how fragile our world really is. If we don’t support the entertainment that feeds our enthusiasm, who will? When? Remember, “Le Mans” was a bomb at the box office. And it took years for our favorite subject to recover. Years of Smokey and the Bandit and Cannonball goofball nothingness.

How about a profile of the sets? In Architectural Digest? How the production designer created the entrance gates to Ferrari in Maranello? Enzo’s office? The Glass House, Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn? Henry Ford II’s office there? And their coup de gras, a “1,000-foot bunker that once sat at the finish line of Le Mans and was torn down in the 1980s. His team rebuilt the entire three-story structure, with the mechanic pits and hallways behind them, the VIP boxes above, the grandstands above those, along with a full Wide World of Sports TV booth….” I should add, by the way, that they also used real, live audio snippets from the one, the only, Jim McKay. Then there are the reviews, in virtually every daily, weekly and monthly publication and broadcast outlet that reviews films, nationwide. Buttressed by a multi-million-dollar ad campaign for the film in every major market, coast to coast. And the best, of course, comes from the buff books. Especially Autoweek. Autoweek says see the film … then watch these five films: “Williams,” a documentary on the man and the team. I watched it, and liked it; “Grand Prix,” to which I say, duh; “Le Mans,” which I give a double duh; “Rush,” to which I say, well yes; and “Senna,” to which I say, not a bad list! Autoweek also dug up, from their morgue, interviews with Foyt and Gurney, on their win at Le Mans in 1967. They interviewed the director of “Ford v Ferrari” on “what he left out of his new movie.” And they advise us motorheads not to let our knowledge of the actual events interfere too much with our screening the movie. Because, after all, it’s a movie! About “what is among the greatest stories in racing history.” But wait, there’s more. I just got an on-line offer to “Enter now for a chance to win this 427 Cobra seen in “Ford v Ferrari.” It’s from Superformance. And, geesh, I just took a break from my typing and checked e-mail. What did I find? An item from Autoweek’s racing daily which says “You will never be Christian Bale (or Ken Miles), but you can bid on the GT40 he drove in ‘Ford v Ferrari.” Interested? Go to the auctions in Kissimmee in January. For real. And the film? The film? Ah, c’mon. Just see it. You were meant to. And bring your friends. They’ll enjoy it too, even if they’re not motorheads. Tell the world about it. Let’s keep that wheel rolling! It’s up to us! G O I N G P L A C E S 812.2019
