his is my final report as President of the PCA, Arizona Region. I have enjoyed working with the board and many of you over the past two years and will continue participating in the board as the Past President. It has been challenging, especially the past year with the Pandemic but I believe we have weathered the worst and have started holding regular driving events, with the exception of social events. As I said last month, we are in good financial shape despite the period of low activity and we continue to add new members every month. We are one of the few regions that have renewed driving instruction using the new requirement of lead-follow, thanks to the superb efforts of Don Clinkinbeard. He has used newly purchased two-way radios for communication between instructors and students, which has worked extremely well. Nationally, PCA has recommended one-way radios that instructors use to broadcast over student car FM radios, which I do not believe offers the same training opportunities. We will continue our monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month by teleconference which will be run by your new president, Mark Baker. Mark has been vice-president for the past two years and I am sure he will exceed my efforts and continue to keep this club vibrant and active. I must admit it has become harder and harder to come up with “Factoids” about Porsches for the meetings. Please join us for our upcoming events and feel assured that we will do our best to keep you safe and having fun! Thank you for letting me lead you on our Porsche journey for the past two years. ‘Nuff said. Drive safely!

ell here we are at the end of another year! Mark and I are grateful for our close circle of friends while navigating Covid-19. We have been able to keep our circle safe by practicing all the recommended guidelines. On that note, the club is starting to get a little more active in planning more drives and continuing with Autocross and DE events in December and January. Keep an eye on our club website calendar for up to the minute event information. We definately enjoyed the weekend drive to Winslow, Arizona and the Petrified Forest. We had the opportunity to have lunch with a new members from Gilbert, Jeff and Amanda. It’s always fun to meet new members. You know how the saying goes, ”IT’S NOT JUST THE CARS, IT’S THE PEOPLE.” The article about this trip will be the January issue of Going Places. In the meantime, check out some of the photos at: https://www.azpcaphotos.com/Driving-Tours/La-Posada-Petrified-Forest-Weekend-Tour-2020/ Kudos to Jim Bultema for suggesting a new Going Places monthly feature column, “Spotless..” Read about it on page 21 and help make it a success by submitting your tips! This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Dan Bouet for “HPED at Inde Motorsports Ranch.” He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. FYI -- Our membership monthly meetings are still being held on-line, but you need to sign up to get the meeting login information. REGION ANNOUNCEMENTS Charity Drive to Bartlett Lake Saturday, December 19, 2020 -- 8:30 am - Noon

With the state of the economy and the long food lines that we see in most cities it is important that we, as a club, lend a helping hand. We are holding a charity drive to Bartlett Lake on Saturday, December 19 from 8:30 am to noon. The cost per car is $50 with the proceeds going to the St. Mary’s Foodbank. You can also contribute more, if you feel inclined. You will be able to pay for the event on MotorsportReg. I will also bring my photo gear if anyone would like a portrait of their car and themselves at the lake. The drive to Bartlett Lake, with its “Porsche curves” and beautiful views of the Sonoran Desert will make for an enjoyable Saturday morning ride. Come out and join your fellow club members for a great Saturday morning drive and also help out those who are in need of food for the Holiday Season. We’ll meet at the Coffee Plantation (on the northeast corner of Scottsdale Rd, and Shea). The route will take us through some beautiful desert neighborhoods in North Scottsdale to the lake. After the event is finished you are on your own for lunch to head to some of the nice restaurants in Carefree or Cave Creek. Here are a few restaurant suggestions. MEET A MEMBER

T

he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Going Places Editor, I would like to introduce featured members, Neil Kerr and Penny Treadaway.

1. When did you join PCA?

We joined the PCA in August 2020. Since then we have enjoyed access to the many resources online and especially like reading the articles about cars and owners. We joined PCA with hopes of doing rally type events regularly and hope that will be the case post-pandemic. I have considered doing the DE or Auto-X events and plan to watch a couple events to see what they are all about before deciding to participate or not.

2. What Porsche(s) do you have?

We are fortunate to have two Porsches; a loaded Cayenne S with ~65K miles and a Boxster with ~30K miles, both 2013’s. This combination is great for cruising with two or four people in comfort. Occasionally, Ozzie our Dachshund gets out for a ride -- I think he prefers the Cayenne.

3. Where are you from?

We moved back to the Phoenix area this summer after spending 15 years outside Boston. Fall is a great time in New England and last year we participated in a rally that Porsche dealership in Nashua, NH led. The route included a big part of the 34-mile Kancamagus Trail through the rugged White Mountains of northern New Hampshire. It was a spectacular day to leaf-peep with a spirited heard of Porsches. Currently, we live in Surprise, in a new subdivision called Sterling Grove (303 X Cactus), featuring an 18-hole Jack Nicholas golf course managed by Troon. In August, we were the 4th family to move in and there will be a total of 2,200 homes here by 2030. The developer, Toll Brothers, has one model that has a garage bay with a glass wall so the owner can see their Porsche from the interior courtyard and home office – it is really cool! I’m sure many other PCA members and Porsche owners will be in the neighborhood. Our son and daughter-in-law live 4 miles away now so it is a perfect arrangement for spending time with them regularly. It would be better if there were more roads in the area with curves, let alone ‘twisties’, but Yarnell Hill isn’t that far away.

Neil and Penny.

4. Work background or trade?

Our backgrounds are in sales but neither of us are currently working. We moved back east when I was promoted to Sales Manager for Bose, based in Framingham. I held national and global sales roles working with strategic retailers like Apple and Verizon over a 24-year long career with Bose. My plan is to re-active my real estate license and build a business that allows a nice work / life balance.

9. Why did you buy your Porsche?

I bought a 2000 Boxster to enjoy Arizona with the top down. The driving experience and handling of that car went beyond my expectations and has us hooked for life!

10. Top 3 cars you would own?

I’m happy and “want what we have” but that Taycan looks amazing.

5. What makes your car special?

The Cayenne was built with a lot of feature boxes checked. Many are surprised when I give them a demo of raising and lowering the air suspension. People also love the chocolate leather on the dash – seems a little over the top!

6. Next upgrade?

The Boxster has an early head unit with rudimentary Bluetooth features so upgrading that is on the list. And some new floormats since the tan ones get dirty so fast. I’m happy with the Cayenne so no upgrades are planned. I need to find a durable wax that will withstand the Arizona heat. I’m also driving it more out here so want to find a product to easily wash off the brake dust.

7. Have you personalized your car?

Only personalization will be the PCA sticker – still need to figure out where it will go.

8. Favorite memory with a car?

Cars are a fixation of mine so it is tough to narrow it down to one memory: i) The drive last fall was pretty special. ii) In the mid-2000s we had a Boxster and bought a Cayenne. I told a co-worker about it via e-mail. He responded back in a barely safe for work message incredulous that I had two Porsches, but he inadvertently did so using “reply to all” to a division wide e-mail from the Legal team. It was awesome! We still laugh about it. iii) I also have enjoyed giving friends and relatives their first ride in a Porsche, or convertible, even so, those are great memories too.

Autocross #3 Results

H

ey Motorsport Enthusiasts,

Here are the results from our November 21, 2020 Autocross. The chart on the right, shows all the runs that were made that day with the other chart on the next page, showing Top Time of Day, which represents that person’s quickest run for the day. We welcomed some new friends from the Audi Club, who joined for a day testing your and your car’s limits in a safe and controlled environment. Eric among others put on a brilliant display of skill and speed during the day with Top Time being hotly contested. When the dust settled congratulations to Kim for setting TTOD. Weather was fantastic, 85 degrees sunny with a light breeze. We had a capacity group of 42 cars with a couple of 1st time participants, notably among the Audi Club, all of whom had a great time. Pat the Hot Dog Lady served her usual delicious hot dog lunch in a COVID safe manner. We want to thank the folks that help with set up and tear down to make the event run smooth.

Spotless...

by Jim Bultema, Monthly Meeting Coordinator

I

am pleased to announce a new feature for Going Places entitled “Spotless”. It will be a section where anyone who prides themselves on having a spotless Porsche can send me some of your recommendations and tricks of cleaning, so the rest of the club can try it out. Don’t assume anything, sometimes a small detail can make a difference. Please send me your suggestions to: monthlymeetings@az.pca.org and I will include them into each monthly issue. I think it would be fun to also include a photo of you and your Porsche, or if you prefer, just the car. This won’t work without “YOU”, the membership, so please take a moment, and send me your pointers. For our first article please send me your tips for cleaning and detailing your tires and rims. At our recent drive to La Posada, in Winslow, Arizona, a member told me how he uses a special brush to clean the wheels and then he waxes the rims to help in keeping the black residue to a minimum. Let me know. Many thanks. Jim

The Arizona Twist

by Carole Hedstrom, PCA,Oregon Region photos by Carole Hedstrom It’s a year of flexibility. Change, plot twists, and expecting the unexpected are trademarks of 2020. My biggest lesson has been flexibility and adaptability. Brad and I stopped fighting the current and have adapted too. The pandemic has become an opportunity for those of us working remotely. Since we both now work-from-home, there is no boundary on where the work actually takes place. Our jobs are, and will be, remote for the foreseeable future, whether we are physically in Portland or anywhere else. We have seized the opportunity to work-fromhome in Arizona for the next few months, and have temporarily made a home here. While we will be working, we will also be playing and exploring and enjoying this part of the country. First on the list of play time is checking out another Porsche Club. We found the Arizona Region Porsche Club (AZPCA) and signed up for their season-opening Arrive and Drive on October 17th. The drive was appropriately called “Taking the Twisties to Prescott.” For those of you not familiar with Arizona and regional pronunciation quirks, Prescott rhymes with “biscuit”, similar to the way Willamette rhymes with “damn it.” You can thank me later when you all come to Treffen in May 2021 and sound like a local instead of some foreigner. Speaking of Treffen, this route will be one of drives offered during the upcoming three-day Porsche festival in May. AZPCA is working and planning the event for spring in beautiful Scottsdale. If this drive is any indication of what to expect, it’s going to be a fun few days of driving. This drive must certainly be an Arizona classic. We arrived at the meeting spot in Scottsdale to find about 20 fine cars already there. They were lined up and as newcomers arrived the line of pretty Porsches grew, and folks got out of their cars to admire the other ones. Even with face-coverings muffling voices, greetings among old friends and new rippled through the crowd. All waivers and forms had been dealt with via Speed-waiver, making for a no-contact morning as we all assembled. Soon enough, Rook Younger took to the mega-phone and called us all to order for the pre-drive instructions. You all know the drill: bring a navigator if you can, don’t pass other Porsches, stay together, the lead car will arrange re-groups if we get too spread out, be safe, have fun. With that, we were off!

Rook covering the pre-drive instructions.

The first leg of the trip, Scottsdale to Wickenburg, took us through the open desert of The Phoenix Sonoran Preserve. It was a lovely Saturday morning, so there was quite a bit of traffic along with bicycles, motorcycles and political rallies, but we soon left the city goodbye and found ourselves again in the wide-open desert landscape. We stopped in Wickenburg for the traditional middrive break. We congregated at a gas station and took time to chat and admire one another’s cars. Then it was back to the cars to prepare for the best part of the day. | 22 |

The drive from Wickenburg to Prescott, although only 59 miles, is a fun road by any standard. It’s a climb of about 3,300 ft, which means it’s uphill and twisty, just what every Porsche driver could ask for in a drive. The group did tend to spread out, but gave each driver their own stretch of road to navigate and enjoy rather than being boxed in between other cars. The final twists of the road bring you to downtown Prescott which has the air of old mountain, goldrush whistle-stop complete with a central park square right in the middle of town. As the Covid-era dictates, there was no planned group lunch at a local restaurant. Instead each party was on their own for lunch and small clusters of folks wandered off together for a well-deserved bite to eat. Many of the Porsches parked in the same parking garage and unfortunately, Bob Bandera, owner of a vintage 914, accidentally locked his keys and phone inside the car. However, as Porsche owners are notoriously good people, fellow members, Jim and Teri Hunt, called AAA for Bob and got the process started. It was not long before AAA had the issue resolved and Bob, the Hunts, Brad and I were enjoying tacos and a cold-one in the courtyard of a restaurant on the square. Again, I was shown the true spirit of Porsche people. We look out for one another and always welcome a wave as our paths cross while driving. The return trip back to the Phoenix area could go one of two ways. One option would be to travel a bit further northeast with a slight turn to the south to catch I-17 or to retrace one’s steps back through the twisties on the downhill. I’m sure my faithful readers will know the way I chose for the home-going drive. “Takin’ the Twisties to Prescott” was an excellent introduction to the AZPCA for me and Brad. We immediately felt welcome and fell into a small group who introduced us to others as well. As we all know, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!” We are looking forward to the sunny winter ahead with more drives, more friends, and more exploring in this beautiful state.

Bob’s vintage 914!

HPDE at Inde Motorsports Ranch by Dan Bouet, Driver Education Chair photos by Kellie Bouet and Jim Kendler

W

hat a fantastic weekend it was at Inde Motorsports Ranch. We held a two-day HPDE (High Performance Driver’s Education) track event on their 2.7 mile course. Initially, we were planning to conduct an autocross event alongside the HPDE, but that plan changed a few weeks prior to the event. It worked out great for everyone that signed up for the HPDE, as we ended up running a very fun track configuration on Saturday, instead of a shorter configuration that was originally planned. We had approximately 70 drivers attend the weekend event, and a few folks brought more than one car. Drivers in attendance came from some of the neighboring states; California, New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas. One of the local Arizona businesses in the Porsche motorsports industry was also present and they brought multiple race cars. It was a real treat to check out all the various vehicles there and see drivers enjoying them out on the track. It wasn’t just Porsches either- there was a peppering of BMWs, Audis, and others that played along with our favorite marque. Some Inde members were also in attendance, because, hey, it’s fun to play with the AZPCA guys. Our instruction program utilized new Bluetooth communicators, recently purchased by the club. Historically, we have had an instructor sit in the passenger seat of the student’s car and give verbal instruction from there. Now, in order to keep social distancing, we have amended our instruction that allows the student to drive alone, while the instructor drives their car either in front or behind the student’s car. Verbal communication is maintained via the Bluetooth communicator headset. This new form of instruction was very well received by both students and instructors and we anticipate we will continue utilizing this form of instruction, even after we move past Covid concerns. The track itself is not one to be missed. It was just repaved the month prior to our event, so the surface was smooth, clean, and grippy. I would like to think I got faster through better driving, but I did set some personal best laps times on the course, more likely due to the improved surface. The track features a long straightaway, where 120+mph is often achieved. Elevation changes, blind corners, and fast sweepers all add to the exhilaration. We plan to host another HPDE weekend event there next November, and maybe, we might add one in the springtime! We’ll see! Many thanks to the various volunteers and instructors that joined us to help put on this fantastic weekend, and to the staff at Inde Motorsports Ranch for being so welcoming and professional. Until next time at Inde, we hope to see you at another one of AZPCA’s HPDE events in Phoenix!

Raring to go!

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region

365 SPORTS CARS YOU MUST DRIVE Fast, Faster, Fastest

D

espite the dictatorial, totalitarianism of the title, this is a very pleasant book to read. One might wonder how there can be 365 different sports cars to describe, but if you include the Ford RS200 of 1984-1986 (remember it?), the Bricklin SV-1 of 1974, the Kaiser Darrin of 1952-54 (pre-dating the Corvette as the first Fiberglass bodied American sports car), the Nash Metropolitan (a sports car ?), and 18 models of Porsche ( plus additional Ruf and a TechArt versions), 365 models is no big deal. There is even Porsche content with the Introduction and Acknowledgments pages. If the title seems familiar, this is an update of the 2012 edition. Clearly comprehensive, this book covers cars ranging in vintage from 1886 (Benz Patent Motorwagen) to 2020 (Porsche Taycan Turbo). The earliest ‘real’ sports car is probably the 1927 Bentley 4 ½ Litre, or perhaps the 193334 MG Magnette or maybe the 1908- 27 Ford Model T as an American contribution to the sports car genera. The sports cars covered by this book are presented in alphabetical order by manufacturer and by model, and there is no index. The lack of index is fine for the car-of-the-day reader to whom the title seems to refer. But the reader interested in information about the Murcielago, or the Reventon must flip through 192 pages to find the entries in the Lamborghini section. Speaking of sections; a nice touch is that there is a color band at the top of each page for a specific manufacturer making it easy to tell when one flips through to a different brand of vehicle. With a few exceptions, 365 SPORTS CARS YOU MUST DRIVE provides a full page treatment to each sports car, with a picture, a block of text, and a table of highlights and one of specifications.

| 32 |

The text focuses on the context in which the vehicle was designed and used, and often provide fascinating details. Though brief, these narrations – John Lamm has never written a bad article – are the are the heart of the book. The highlights table tabulates significant features of the vehicle and/or its context. The specifications table gives the expected information about size, performance, and in some cases, when new and current prices. The fiscal year for the dollars used for ‘now’ pricing is not clear, but presumably 2020.. As a point of calibration, the Porsche 997 Cab is listed as $69,300 when new, and $35,000+ now. Full of interesting information, concisely presented, this book will be interesting as a casual read, or as a source of information about sports cars that one hears about from time to time. Though racing sports cars are not really part of the scope, Porsche 550 and Beck Spyders are discussed as are the Jaguar D-type and the Ford GT40. Do not be put off by the title. 365 SPORTS CARS YOU MUST DRIVE is much more of a book than a cursory carof-the-day calendar, and the text is nowhere near as dictatorial as the title. Readable, or just flip-throughable, this book will be of interest to any sports car enthusiast or budding enthusiast and is eminently suited to perusal in small snatches. With a soft cover, it has 320, 6-1/2 x 9-1/2 inch semi-gloss pages including 405 pictures. By the time you read this it should be available for $26.99 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from Amazon.com. 365 SPORTS CARS YOU MUST DRIVE Fast, Faster, Fastest by John Lamm, published October 27, 2020 by Motorbooks, USA
