PRESIDENT’S NOTE

Angela and I wish everyone a Healthy, Peaceful, and Prosperous New Year.

Special thank you Dave Zoloto, GM at Porsche North Scottsdale, for hosting our December membership meeting. We appreciate your hospitality and sponsorship.

Thanks to Mark Baker for his two years' service as our club President, he did a terrific job. I think we need a new position for Mark as chief technology officer along with the past president position. Congratulations, to Rook Younger for accepting the PCA National Driving Tour position. Rook will maintain triple duty as our Region's Driving Tour Chair and Director at Large. We are very fortunate that Marty Ercoline has volunteered, and has been approved by the board to complete Andrew's Treasurer term. Andrew, Good luck in Tenneessee.

The Arizona region's membership has increased in the last few years. That is exciting. With the increase in membership, many of our most popular events reach max capacity quickly. It is usually the driving tours that fill up quickly. Your Committee chairs are constantly planning new events. If you would like to get involved there are committees that need additional assistants. There are plenty of areas to volunteer your time; Autocross, Driver Ed, Tours, and Social events.

For new members interested to participate in an event, you will need a Motorsports.reg account. To view upcoming events: Go to: AZ.PCA.org, access the Calendar, then click AZPCA Calendar in drop down menu; search for events. February, March, and April are packed with activities. To check the status for events, click the EVENTS tab for your area of interest.

With that said there is one key Chair position that needs to be filled immediately:

• A Chairperson/Co chair for 2023 Flight 45. The Committee needs to select a date and importantly select a venue. If you are interested, please contact me.

"It's not just the cars, it's the people..." We hear that said or written all the time. It would be great to hear from some of the people.

An item that I would like to see included in our monthly membership meetings is a live in person, "Meet a Member". AZPCA is fortunate to have a diverse membership with interesting stories, work background, racing history, etc. It would be great to give them the floor for 10 to 15 minutes. I would like to start with the February monthly meeting.

Angela and I will make every effort to meet everyone at every event we attend. I look forward to seeing you at one of the many upcoming events.

From the EDITOR

Angela Manente

Let’s welcome in the new year with lots of fun events planned for the next few months. Great new locations for monthly member meetings and Porsches and Pancakes. It is a great way to meet new members. Speaking of new memebrs, if you haven’t ordered your name badge(s), they’re free, so go out to our Goodie Store at az.pca.org/store and place an order.

With the holidays now over, I will be working with Gregg and Ali over the next few months to transition the editor duties over to them. This will free up some time for me to assist Mark with some administrative duties. I am used to juggling many balls in the air after being a software project manager for many years.

We also have a new sponsor this month, Redwood General Tire. Alpio Barbara, is the owner and also an AZPCA member. He has been very generous hosting many events for our club at Troon and Alpio’s Toy Barn.

This month the winner for the Writer’s Award for Going Places is Phil Veitch for all the cool pictures he took at AZPCA’s HPDE event at the Podium Club. I know its not an article but, he took some really awsome action photos. He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA event.

My husband, Mark, has set the bar pretty high for us to make every effort to meet everyone at every event we attend! All I ask is that you please wear your official name badge or temporary name tag.

Looking forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events.

Don Murray has extended a gracious invitation to host AZPCA members for a private viewing of his remarkable collection.

The collection includes several extremely rare and historic Porsches.

We will view Don's collection of Ferraris, including a 1950 166 that was the 22nd road Ferrari ever built. Don’s collection showcases a 1955 RS Spyder that won a Formula 2 race and his 1970 911 is in practically new condition with only 700 original miles. Some notable race cars in the collection are the Sebring Sprint that was raced by legendary driver Bruce McLaren.

REGION ANNOUNCEMENTS

3 Lakes Driving Tour

Wednesday, February 22, 2023

8:00 am – 3:00 pm

This mid-week drive will commence in Chandler and will run through East Mesa and Apache Junction toward Canyon Lake. After a brief stop at Tortilla Flat we will re-trace the route along the lake back to Mesa then on to the scenic and winding route following Usery Pass and Bush Highway to Saguaro Lake. After a stop at lake #2 we will make our way onto the Beeline Highway toward Fountains Hills. From Fountain Lake, home of the famous fountain, we’ll continue on to Rio Verde and North Scottsdale to our final destination, Bartlett Lake, where a great Italian buffet lunch awaits us at The Cove restaurant.

So if you’re keeping track, yeah, that’s four lakes. But there are lakes, then there are lakes! The big ones are formed by dams erected on the Salt and Verde Rivers in the ’20s and ’30s, for water storage and hydroelectric power production. Fountain Lake is an “attraction” that surrounds the iconic fountain from which the Fountain HIlls community got its name when development began in the early ’70s.

The cost for the lunch buffet is $32 per person. Those who were on the drive last time we went to The Cove will tell you it was delicious!

Come out with your friends and enjoy a day of displaying your Porsche, seeing other great Porsches, and visiting with friends.

DRIVE

November "Fill the Frunk" Food Drive

Always looking for an opportunity to support those in need in our community during the holiday season, AZPCA conducted a holiday food drive to assist the Scottsdale Vista del Camino Food Bank. “Fill the Frunk” food drives have been successful in other PCA regions, and this one was no exception!

Cars started showing up early at Alpio's at Troon, near Pinnacle Peak, to drop off loads of items such as canned goods, peanut butter, jelly/jam, cereal, pasta sauce, tomato sauce, and mac 'n' cheese, as well as toilet paper and paper towels, and pet food.

Vista del Camino provides a variety of services to Scottsdale residents to prevent homelessness, meet the basic needs of individuals and families in crisis, relieve economic and emotional stress and assist individuals to maintain self-sufficiency. The food bank provides boxes filled with essential foods and specialty items for people experiencing homelessness.

Big thanks to Alpio Barbara for the generous hospitality at his unique event venue, and for his great support for our club at this, and other AZPCA events.

In addition to the food bank support, cash donations were offered in support of Alpio's preferred charity, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Cars lined up early with their generous donations

these can only succeed with the help of willing Volunteers. Thanks, Remo!

Of course, at PCA events it’s not just the car

GIVING BACK: FOOD

FOOD DRIVE

Perennial Concours winners Ray, Jim, and Jack took a break from cleaning their cars to join their PCA friends at Alpio’s to help our community.

Our generous members donated 2,586 lbs. of food and goods to Vista del Camino. According to the food bank, those donations will supplement the diet and other household needs of over 38 families. A worthy effort, and a goal to be surpassed next year!

Not all donations came out of a Porsche’s “frunk!”

After collection bins were secured for pickup on Monday, a number of event volunteers headed off in our Porsches on the popular route to Bartlett Lake, followed by lunch in Cave Creek. Thinking we’ll make that drive an official part of the event next year! Happy Holidays, PCAers!

ROOK YOUNGER
ARTICLE BY

Do You Stop to Smell the Roses?

You drive a Porsche, right? And, despite all their brand extensions, their SUVs and their forays into design in recent years, Porsche still describes itself as a sports car maker, right?

Ok then, how do you react to this story? It popped up in my Facebook feed, and I’ve been trying, for several weeks now, to get a grip on it.

To paraphrase, the story is that an Airbus A380 is making steady progress, crossing the Atlantic, at 30,000 ft. and 560 mph. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, a Eurofighter appears. This is a very hot seat, with a V-max of Mach 2 and a 60,000 ft. ceiling. The fighter pilot goes into an airshow routine, with a few barrel rolls, dives, vertical climbs and so forth.

There’s airwave silence for several minutes. Then the fighter jock gets on the radio and asks the commercial pilot what he thinks of his plane’s performance – it’s a muted what do you think of that? And the Airbus pilot laughs and says something like, cool, but I stood up, walked to the rear, used the bathroom, got myself a cup of coffee and had a snack.

Which leads to the moral of the story. I quote, verbatim, from the posting, “When you’re young, speed and adrenaline seem to be great. But, as you get older and wiser, you learn that comfort and peace are more important.

“This is called S O S. Slower, older and smarter.”

It’s interesting that, in the comments section, people weighed in with “I heard it was an SR-71 pilot,” or “a 747” or “an F4 Phantom.” In other words, apparently, the story, in some form or another, has been around aviation circles for years.

And so, too, has been the conundrum.

My father had a private pilot’s license. When I was in my early teens, we’d go up in Cessna 150s and 172s. We’d come over our house, and my mother would come out and wave. My father would bank the wings. Then he’d let me take the controls. And I learned to fly straight and level, to climb, to descend.

The fact is, it really was very undramatic. The only time I got my blood pressure up was once, when my father was with an instructor, getting certified for a new airplane. I was in the back seat. We went into a stall. On purpose. All of a sudden, the plane shook, the nose dropped and we … we lost lift. We began falling.

Now, that incident was exciting. But the rest of it? I found the whole routine of flying just that, a routine. Everything was highly regulated and specified, in terms of what you could do, when and how. It just didn’t excite me. And I never pursued my own license. Maybe if my father did aerobatics … but he didn’t, and neither did I.

What I did do, as soon as I got my driver’s license and had scraped up enough money, all of $800, which was all I had, was buy my first sports car. A ’64 Triumph TR-4. I’d have bought a Porsche in a heartbeat, if I could have afforded it. I mean, nothing even comes close. Which is what I wanted.

And, as I get older, I feel the same. I don’t feel an urge to slow down at all. I feel just the opposite. The clock is ticking, so it’s time to get it all in, or as much as I can. And that’s the opposite of S O S. Smarter? Maybe. Certainly more experienced. Older? Well, it beats the alternative. But slower? Please!

A few years back I did a Porsche drive in the mountains of southern Colorado. We were moving at, let’s just say, a rapid rate of speed. I was following the leader. Someone else, in what looked like a relatively new C4S, was following me. Then there was a big gap. So we pulled over. And the driver behind me literally leapt out and exclaimed, “wow, that was great!”

Turns out, he was recently retired, and the Porsche was his first, a gift for the next phase of his life. His comment, I thought, was what was great.

Then there was the time the Porsche Parade was at Keystone Resort in the Rockies. One of the events was a drive through the mountains, farther west. I was mid-pack, following a pristine Carrera with Michigan plates. The driver, it turned out, just tootled along, letting the trail of cars, up ahead, get farther and farther away. Up over Hoosier Pass and onward. My blood pressure started rising like I had a broken radiator hose. Finally, just finally, at last, I was able to pass. And I blew by, without so much as a look over.

At our next stop, someone up ahead, who had seen the whole episode in his rear-view mirror, came up to me and said, “we were wondering when you’d pass.”

Exactly. S O S be damned. I want the zest. Until I can’t do it anymore.

AZPCA AUTOCROSS

EVENT #3 Neujahr (HAPPY NEW YEAR!)

Did everyone make a Neujahr Resolution and partake in some of the German Neujahr traditions other than driving your Porsche car to a Neujahr celebration? What about Sledding (not sure that the weather and AZPCA Region Land terrain conditions are conducive and warrant the opportunity to bring out your bobsled); how about passing out (ah, maybe using “passing out” is not the best choice of words so let’s strike that and use) “handing out” or receiving Lucky Charms; dinner out; and indulge in some “sekt” (Sparkling Wine) and “feuerzangenbowle” (Burnt Punch).

Ok, there is always next year in trying some of the German Neujahr traditions.

Hopefully, your AZPCA Region holidays were joyful and merry with your fellow members at the “Fill the Frunk” Food Drive, Porsche and Pancakes, Membership meeting, Autocross and DE Events, and Holiday Party events. These holiday festivities are behind us now.

The year 2022 was a great year for our Region, especially for the Autocross Program. The second half of the season will be just as exciting and fun-packed, if not more, than the first half of the season. Just wait and see for yourself.

However, it would be best for you to sign up and have first-hand experience in all the upcoming fun and excitement with your fellow AZPCA’rs. There are only five more autocross events left in 2023 before the autocross program goes on the summer break.

Event #3 was held on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at the Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP), in Litchfield Park, and again the event was sold-out before the registration deadline.

Forty-drivers braved the early frosty cold morning temperature and unseasonably cool weather throughout the day. Although, the drivers were very grateful for the dry weather conditions. The AZPCA Region is very fortunate that our weather is favorable for having driving events during the winter months without any ice and/or snow on the ground.

The AZPCA Region Autocross Course Design Team (ACDT) designed another fun-packed counter-clockwise directional course for this event. The design had a series of slalom cones with a few gates and three sweeping turns. The ACDT does an excellent job of designing fun courses and not making them tricky or gimmicky where drivers will tend to have more DNF’s, especially for the inexperienced autocrosser. The drivers drove three laps in both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Remember all the mystery surrounding the Mystery Course Designer? Who was the Mystery Course Designer that all of a sudden sprung out-of-nowhere and started designing most of the autocross courses last season? It was such a mystery that the AZPCA Region Autocross Ace Correspondence Reporting Team (ACRT) went into a full-race mode in investigating this mystery to find out “Who is this guy/gal”.

The ACRT has followed up on a gazillion leads, some good and some not so good, and as of this writing, there are no new leads in this case. Given this valiant effort, the ACRT has finally arrived at a point where they should divulge some information on their investigation regarding who is this mystery course designer. Yes, the Mystery Course Designer is still a mystery and the ACRT case has now been classified as a “Cold Case” until someone steps forward with additional information.

Some of you may have noticed that Chris M., one of the event setup team members, is no longer helping to set up the courses and driving his Boxster and Carrera Cabriolet at the AZPCA Region autocross events. Chris moved to the Tampa, FL area and he is now enjoying autocrossing and meeting new PCA members with the Suncoast Florida Region.

A rumor has it he just moved into his new residence a couple days before Hurricane Ian moved through his area and a month later, he had to duck Hurricane Nicole. Chris was very fortunate not to receive any damage to his new residence and his Porsche cars. Chris will be missed at the AZPCA Region autocross events.

David B., is a PCA member with the Wild Rose Region and he joined in for his first AZPCA Region autocross event with his 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet. David’s primary residence is in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and is now an Arizona Winter Resident and having fun in the sun. Welcome to Arizona, David. Hopefully, we’ll see you at the remaining autocrosses and other AZPCA Region events before you make your trek back to Canada. David’s best laptime was achieved on his second lap in the afternoon session with 59.329 seconds.

Eric K. was able to make his first appearance at an AZPCA Region Autocross Event and he drove his 2009 Porsche Cayman “S” and his best laptime was 55.804 seconds. Eric’s son, Scott K., was co-driving with his dad and Scott’s best laptime was 56.980 seconds. Scott’s goal was to beat his dad’s time, but he came up a tad short. In these cases, exuberance and youth will motivate the experience to not let that happen and experience will always prevail in these situations. Dads will always win, no matter what.

| 22 |

In Group “P” there were seventeen P-Cars, one- GT3 RS, one-911 (991.1), one - 997 Outlaw, one (Brrrrrrrr) Boxster S’, eleven-Caymans (all the usual variants, except the GT-4), and one vintage 968.

There was a four-car battle for the top Group “P” time of day. Kim K. led the way, in his 2016 Porsche GT3 RS, with a 52.027 second run on his last lap in the afternoon session. Martin R. is no stranger to nipping at Kim’s times. Martin drove his 2007 Porsche Cayman “S” with a 52.404 second laptime on his last lap in the afternoon session.

Eric S, in his 2006 Porsche 997 Outlaw, drove his best laptime of 52.521 seconds on his third lap in the morning session. Kenny M., drove his 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS to his best laptime of 52.528 seconds on his second lap in the afternoon session. Kenny M. was only 7 thousandths of a second off of Eric’s time.

In Group “X”, there were two AZPCA Region members, and one son of a member, trying to be the “Top Driver” in this category of extremely disparate go-fast cars that are not anything that resembles a Porsche car. Jonathan B. drove his non-P-car, but a German make, to his best laptime of 53.335 seconds. Jonathan drove his best laptime on his first lap in the afternoon session.

Wait, there’s more. Ealing J., in his Group “X” car, lays down a phenomenal run that will deny any AZPCA member of reaching the same time bracket of “51 Seconds”. Ealing drove his best laptime of 51.868 seconds during his second lap in the afternoon session.

Andrew T., son of AZPCA Region member, Eric T., drove his Group “X” car and his best laptime was 58.369 seconds, which he pulled out on his last lap in the afternoon session. Good driving Andrew.

Are you wondering what is a 997 Outlaw? An Outlaw is essentially a Carrera “S” that has been stripped of some factory non-performance brake, suspension, and engine parts and replaced with go-fast performance components and parts such as better brakes, stiffer suspension, and a hopped-up and welltuned engine.

In the Porsche world there are no “Hot Rods” or a “Tuner Car”, they are called “Outlaws”. This means the car is no longer a stock grocery-getter but, you still can get your groceries in an “Outlaw”, if you desire to drive your “Outlaw” to the grocery store.

Eric S. is the owner of the “997 Outlaw” and he is a talented driver and fun to watch. Eric is always nipping at the heels of Kim K. and his GT3 RS. Eric also takes in-car videos while he is driving the “Outlaw” on course and posts them to the AZPCA Facebook page. You should view his postings after each event.

The ”Penalty Assessments” for this course was eleven cone kills and eight DNFs (Off-Course deviations around critical cone elements). The course had a simple read factor of about 8.7, if you remember to look ahead. There were several visual aids to help steer you in the right direction.

Scott K., was the “Top Cone Killer” for this event with a total of three cones that he hit during his afternoon session runs. Martin R. had two kills, one in each session; and six other drivers had one each throughout the day.

The event article last month mentioned there will be notes taken on the drivers who have an on-course unintended wayward driving maneuver. This event produced two candidates that displayed an unintended wayward driving maneuver. At this time, this information will just be noted and revealed at a later date. Oh, by the way, a title name for these on-course unintended wayward driving maneuvers has been selected and also will be revealed later in the season.

Did you realize attending and driving in an autocross and/or a driving education (DE) event will help you develop better driving skills and vehicle dynamic control for the highway? An autocross and DE will help you to quickly react and how to react if a hazardous situation should occur in front of you on the highway. Not only an autocross and DE will teach you how and where to steer to avoid an impact with an object or other vehicle, it will teach you the proper techniques in throttle control and braking applications in an elevated stressed situation.

If you have any questions regarding an autocross or DE event, please feel free to contact Kim K. or Rick A., Autocross Chairs, at autocross@az.pca.org or Dan B., Driver Education Chair, at drivereducation@az.pca.org.

These newly acquired driving skills should make you a lot more comfortable with your street driving and you should join your fellow AZPCA Members on one of Rook Y’s Driving Tour events. As a matter of fact, Rook has a Driving Tour scheduled for Saturday, January 21, 2023, to Bagdad and at the end of the drive everyone will enjoy a buffet lunch at the Copper Country Bar & Grill. Please check this publication for the Tour event details or contact Rook, Driving Tour Chair, at drivingtours@az.pca.org.

The next autocross is scheduled for Saturday, January 14, 2023, at the AMP Autocross Pad. The registration is well underway and just like the December event, the available slots will fill up fast way before the registration deadline date of Thursday, January 12, 2023, at 6PM, AST (Arizona Standard Time). You should not hesitate at all if you do not want to miss a fun-packed event like an AZPCA Region Autocross. And yes, all drivers and “Taste of Autocross” entrants will receive a free BBQ Lunch provided by the Region.

We’ll see you at the AZPCA Region Events.

There are many great roads to explore North and South of Highway 60 in the East Valley and Sunday morning is a great time of day for a drive.

Our Tour will start in East Mesa. We will proceed East on Hwy. 60 to AZ 177 South, heading south past the Asarco Ray Mine. Unfortunately, access to tour the mine overlook has been closed since Covid.

We will continue South and East to a short stop in Winkleman. This year we will drive North on AZ 70 towards Hwy. 60 S. through Globe to Superior, AZ

to our lunch destination at The Superior Barmacy. We will order off the menu and be responsible for our own check.

Side Note: An investor, purchased and renovated The Hotel Magma and an old pharmacy directly across the street and converted it into a bar/restaurant; The Superior Barmacy. Superior was founded as a mining town for the Silver King and then later Magma mines; silver was mined at first, and then transitioned to copper. The town has been the site for many Hollywood movies and Television Westerns. In 1997 the thriller-drama U-Turn, directed by Oliver Stone and starring: Sean Penn, Jennifer Lopez, and Nick Nolte. In 1977 scene from the Gauntlet filmed on Main St, starring Clint Eastwood and Sandra Locke.

AZPCA HPDE AT THE PODIUM CLUB

La Casa de Iluvia

On December 3, 2022, the Podium Club at Attesa, near The House of Rain (formerly known as Casa Grande), hosted the Club’s most recent HPDE/Time Trials event. To say it was a wet event would dramatically understate the challenge faced by the attending drivers. The rain kept coming all morning and afternoon resulting in standing water in various places on the track. Nevertheless, it was an experience that offered a rare opportunity to navigate a brand-new (to us anyway) track while simultaneously gaining an appreciation of just how difficult it can be to find the least wet line around a circuit. Drivers who usually run nominally treaded DOT tires, which work great in the dry, found the challenge especially daunting on those same tires on a wet surface that changes with every lap. In fact, it paid big dividends to have tires more closely associated with all season radials, if not outright wet weather tires. As you can see here, the weather produced some stunning photos that our typically dry conditions just couldn’t match!

The signup for the event was over 80 entries including 17 for the two Time Trial sessions. However, and not surprisingly, the field narrowed after the first few sessions as drivers decided discretion was a greater value than valor. Those who did keep going enhanced their car control skills, which may be valuable on the street as well as on the track.

The actual count for the first Time Trials session, which occurred in the morning, was still pretty strong at 13. All ten of the Club’s rental transponders were used which shows the popularity of running Time Trials even after just one event in the books. The results of that first session are shown on page 30. Congratulations to the winners of each class and overall and a big thank you to all who braved the elements to set a time. Unfortunately, with the weather not improving, participants concluded that they would not improve their times over the morning session and opted out of a second Time Trials session in the afternoon.

| 28 |

As with the earlier TT event at Inde Motorsports Ranch, we used the local track’s timing and scoring system to post times and results. We set the grid based on the drivers’ times from their HPDE sessions, released them at 10-12 second intervals and separated them into two run groups to avoid having cars pass each other on the timed laps. Assuming it doesn’t rain, it shouldn’t be very hard to set new records the next time we go to the Podium Club!

We would like to give a big shout out to the professional staff at the Podium Club who helped us with electronic flags around the circuit and with expert timing and scoring assistance. We couldn’t have done the event without their help. And of course, another big thank you to all the volunteers who braved the cold and rain to put on another HPDE/TT event for the Club.

Our next event will be back at Arizona Motorsports Park on February 11, 2023. So pray for a sunny day and come join us for some fun at the track.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES

HOT ROD Magazine: 75 years, by Drew Hardin

Somehow it seems inappropriate to this reviewer, to have a HOT ROD ‘magazine’ with a hard cover. Touted as a history of HOT ROD MAGAZINE, this book is actually a history of hot roding.

Chapter one, Where it all Began provides fascinating insight into the origins of Southern California hot rodding, the Southern California Timing Association, and the people involved in those activities. It shows that arguably HOT ROD Magazine (henceforth HRM) and the Peterson Publishing empire, all began because when Robert Einar Petersen joined the Army Air Force to become a pilot, the Air Force chose to make him a photographer instead. Nine chapters describe the magazine and its subject matter, decade by decade with prospective treatment of what the 2020s will bring. But overall, HRM is shown as a movement more than a publication. The magazine is shown morphing in the ‘60-’70 time frame from a reporter of Bonneville Top Speed Events to serving as organizer/promoter of shows, tours and as the creator of NHRA

HOT ROD Magazine tells more than the story of the Petersen Publishing empire, and surprisingly vast it was/ is, or of HRM, per se. It documents a major genre of motorsport as it grew from back yards and one car garages, to become a major industry. It also tells how the magazine was instrumental in creating NHRA, an organization whose initial President and Vice President were senior HRM staffers, and which served to create standardization in drag racing, not merely coordinate events.

Much more than a readable text on the history of the magazine, this book is a summary of the history of a large segment of mostly American motorsports. Descriptions of events, based on chronological review of the articles show how the magazine’s focus evolved from being a

journal for the Southern California Timing Association and top speeds, to that of chronicling Muscle Cars and NHRA acceleration events, with a little rod and custom (a competing cousin publication) thrown in.

The initial slogan “everybody’s automotive magazine” defined a Hot Rod as an automobile “rebuilt in the quest for better performance and appearance”. In the 70s, the appearance factor became noticeably more prominent in the coverage and HRM started sponsoring it’s Hot Rod Nationals car shows. Actually, it appears that over the years HRM created and organized a large number of car show and tour events to support the types of vehicles they wrote about. This book shows that HRM was more than a recorder of Hot Rod activities - they were also a participant and promoter of the hobby. Along the way the magazine morphed from reporting on professionally built custom machines to broader coverage of more home-built modified cars. Starting in the ‘90s, it covered low-buck achievements and more how-to instruction not just what-has-been done reporting. There are lots of interesting anecdotes, well and readably told.

HOT ROD Magazine is hardbound with a photographic cover, with 208, 9x11 inch semi-gloss pages, very well illustrated with pictures from HRM files. There is a comprehensive three page index dealing mostly with people’s names. By the time you read this is should be available for $50.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from quartoknows.com.
