T

he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Membership Chair, I would like to introduce featured members, Steve and Barbara Evans.

1. When did you join PCA?

I joined PCA in August of this year.

2. What Porsche(s) do you have?

I have a 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Coupe.

3. Where are you from?

I grew up in Massachusetts, but we’ve lived in Arizona (on and off) for 30 years.

4. Family?

My wife Barbara and I have two kids a son, who’s a senior at ASU and a daughter, who’s a sophomore in high school.

5. Work background or trade?

I’m a partner at Parker Madison Brand Studio, a brand/ communications studio in Tempe. Our clients range from a Silicon Valley based health care startup to a resort property in St. Maarten.

6. Work makes your car special?

I wanted a very correct and original air-cooled car and this car seems to be just that.

7. Next upgrade?

No plans for any upgrades at this time.

| 8 |

C ha i r

8. Have you personalized your car? I like to keep them original.

9. Favorite memory with a car?

We’ve had this car, which is my first Porsche, for a little over a year, so I do have a lot of stories about this car. However, I grew up around cars and have many great memories of going to events and driving cars with my father. Many years ago we drove the family’s 1931 Rolls-Royce Newmarket Convertible Sedan over 1000 miles round trip to the Gilmore Auto Museum in Michigan - that was quite an adventure.

10. Why did you buy your Porsche?

I have friends in the PCA, and wanted to experience having a 911.

11. High school nickname? The Pioneers.

12. Top 3 cars you would own?

We have a couple other cars in the garage, and we’ve had a few different cars over the years. I guess if money were no object, today the three cars I might choose would be a RollsRoyce Silver Ghost, Maserati A6G Zagato, and McLaren F1.

ell here we are at the start of a new year! What are your goals or resolutions for 2022? I came across the following quote from Zig Ziglar, “Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.” This quote reminds me to count my blessings everyday and be thankful for what we have. If you didn’t attend the holiday party, you missed a great evening. Kudos to Jen B. and Cynthia H. for their hard work in organizing this event. The attendees also donated over $550. in Target Gift cards for Sunshine Acres Children’s Home in Mesa. Our region has lots of events planned for January and February, so check out the calendar and sign up. Events fill up quick, so don’t forget to sign up/register at MotorsportReg for the events. This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Gregg and Alison Bull for contributing “What an Epic Day for a Drive.” Gregg will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. BTW - I’m still looking for someone to be my assistant editor for Going Places. If you have questions or might be interested please contact me at: amanente42@gmail.com. As always, I appreciate the articles and pictures that members send me because without them there would be no newsletter. Looking forward to seeing you in person at one of our upcoming events this year.

REGION ANNOUNCEMENTS

West Desert Drive to Verrado January 22, 2022

Join your fellow club members for a drive to the far West-Valley community of Verrado.

Though the drive is not twisty or scenic, the reward is the destination. If you have never visited Verrado you are in for a surprising treat. The most charming small-town atmosphere you will find anywhere in the Valley of the Sun sits against the White Tank Mountains just north of I-10: https://www.verrado.com/ We will start our drive in Scottsdale and head west across the Valley to the back side of the White Tank Mountains. The desert terrain in January doesn’t seem so, well, hot, so the drive along Sun Valley Parkway is pleasant, following the highway past the communities of Sun City Festival and Tartesso. In Verrado we will take a cruise through town, then everyone will be on their own for lunch. There are a number of great options: Ciao Grazie, The Vic, Verrado Grille, Cliff House, and Tempo Urban Bistro. Come on out for our first drive in 2022!

C ha i r

T

he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Membership Chair, I would like to introduce featured member, Kent Wilson.

1. When did you join PCA?

I joined PCA in June of this past year, right after the purchase of my first Porsche.

2. What Porsche(s) do you have?

I have a 991.1 Carrera in Guards Red.

3. Where are you from?

I am from Washington, DC, but moved to Arizona two years ago.

4. Family?

I have a wife and a four year old son.

5. Work background or trade?

I am a director of government affairs for Target in the western region of the U.S.

6. What makes your car special?

It’s a slick top, 7 speed manual with very few options. But most importantly it’s my first!

7. Next upgrade?

I’d love to add a 993 one day; that was the first Porsche I fell in love with as a kid

8. Have you personalized your car? Nope!

9. Favorite memory with a car?

The day it was delivered I kept my son home from school and we watched the truck arrive and unload it together. It will be a day I’ll never forget.

10. Why did you buy your Porsche?

My dad, Richard, was a consummate “car guy” having owned dozens of American classics over the years (he was partial to Cadillacs). He always wanted a brand new Corvette, but could never pull the trigger. In 2012, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and only given a few months to live. A week after that diagnosis, we went together to pick up a new Corvette — and as we were sitting in the finance office he leaned over and said, “Don’t wait until it’s too late to get your dream car — within reason of course.” And so I took his advice.

11. High school nickname? No nickname!

12. Top 3 cars you would own?

Porsche 993 C2 in Arena Red; 90’s Land Rover Defender; 992 GT3 Touring in Oak Green.

AUTOCROSS SEASON SERIES 2021/2022 EVENT #3 STORY BY KENNETH MITCHELL PHOTOS BY CAROLE BULTEMA

A

ZPCA Region Autocross Series Event #3 was held on November 19, 2021, at the Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP) in Litchfield Park, AZ, and 39 drivers were not disappointed. As usual this event had an extremely high fun-factor, and again the weather was AZPCA Region Autocross perfect. | 22 |

The AZPCA Autocross Chairs, Kim K. and Rick A. outdid themselves with another fun-packed course design. The course consisted of a couple of slaloms and sweepers, a chicane, and a disguised straightaway. The drivers drove four separately timed laps in both the morning and afternoon sessions. There was also a lunch break between the two sessions and the drivers were treated to lunch provide by the Region. The course was a little forgiving, and a minor driving mistake wasn’t too costly in your lap time. This course also provided the drivers an opportunity to develop their braking skills when transitioning from a straightaway into a turning maneuver that if you over-shot the turn-in point you were not aligned up for the upcoming slalom segment. The competition was very close amongst three Porsches. Kim K., in his GT3 RS, had the best lap time of 41.309 seconds; and Martin R., in his Cayman S, was nipping at Kim’s best time, with 41.317 seconds. Eric S was also in the hunt for the Top Time of Day (TTOD) with 41.884 seconds. The difference of Kim and Martin’s times was only 8 thousandths of a second. 8 thousandths of a second could be the difference of being about 11 millimeters off of an apex cone or braking a nanosecond too early. Eric’s time was only 56 thousandths of a second behind Martin. Nice driving guys. There were only two Porsche drivers with their cars equipped with Race Tires. Robert T., in a Porsche Carrera Turbo, with a best time of 42.641 seconds followed by Tom T., in the same car, with 43.215 seconds. This event had several husbands and wives co-driving the same car. There was also a family with three generations of drivers. Tom T., the father of Robert T., and Robert’s son, Marc T. (Tom T’s. Grandson), who drove his Porsche 914-4. This is definitely a Porsche car family.

Although, this course was easy to drive and not too tricky to negotiate the course, there were eleven “Cone Kills” by seven drivers. This event “Cone Killer” top honor was awarded to William P. with three cone penalties. Marc T. and Eric T. were runner ups with two penalties each. Each cone penalty adds 2 seconds to your lap time. During the lunch break, the drivers were discussing their morning session runs among other drivers. Some of the drivers were focusing on how to improve their driving for getting closer to the TTOD. One driver related that he needed to find 3 more seconds. Another driver related that he needed to go faster and he was going to mash the go-fast pedal more and use less brake in the afternoon. Another driver stated that he needed more horsepower, so he is going to put a 4.5 liter non-turbo engine in his Carrera. Several drivers were sharing driving tips with other drivers on how to improve their afternoon times. This type of camaraderie is what makes this sport fun when members share information to help others to improve their driving skills. Fourteen drivers improved on their morning times in the afternoon session. Eight of those drivers, improved their afternoon times on their 3rd or 4th lap. Some of those times improvements were significant from their lap times in the morning session and some were almost consistent but, still improved their best morning times in the afternoon. The experienced Porsche drivers, such as Kim, Martin, and Eric; will find that any improvement in their times are usually measured in only thousandths of a second. Beginning and intermediate skilled drivers will normally see larger time gains between the first and the last laps. This is normal. As the aforementioned skill level drivers gain experience with more seat time, they will see their time gains decrease in time. The driver that had the most time improvement from the morning and the afternoon sessions was Jim B., in his 718 Cayman, with 6.382 seconds. Jim drove his best morning time on his 4th lap and his best afternoon time on his 3rd lap. That was a significant improvement and looks like Jim is starting to learn a lot on each lap and event. The holidays are behind us now and it is a new year. Hopefully, your “New Year Resolution” was “I’m going to autocross my Porsche and develop better driving skills”. This would be a great way to start out the new year. The next event is Event #5 of the 2021/2022 AZPCA Region Autocross Series and will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022, and the entries are well underway and filling up fast. The deadline date to sign up is Thursday, January 27, 2022, at 3:00PM/1500 Hours AST (Arizona Standard Time).

| 24 |

If you are still contemplating about giving the autocross event a try, you can ask a driver to sign you up for a “Taste of Autocross” whereas, you will be allowed to ride with the driver to see how much fun can be had driving your Porsche on an autocross course in a safe environment. The entry fee for a “Taste of Autocross” is only $10.00. All you need to do is log-on to your motorsportreg.com account and signup for the next event. You can also signup for volunteering to help with the event operation and there is no cost to volunteer. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact the Region’s Autocross Co-Chairs, Kim K. and Rick A., at autocross@az.pca. org. Hopefully, we’ll see you at the next event. Come on out and join us for a lot of fun.

This chart is all of the raw times, so add 2 seconds for each cone hit. AZPCA A-X #3, November 20, 2021 DRIVER Jacob K

WHAT AN EPIC DAY FOR A DRIVE STORY AND PHOTOS BY GREGG AND ALISON BULL

P

icture the scene if you will…. 41 Porsches in all shapes, sizes, colours and years parked at the Coffee Plantation ready for another AZPCA drive. This morning treated us to not only perfect weather but also a fantastic assortment of cars from a 356 to a Turbo S and everything in between, a real classic showcase of Porsches old and new.

The mood was very positive and Jason D. summed it up perfectly as Group 1 set off when he stated “We’ve got some great classics in this group” all the while sitting in his 2017 Graphite Blue Metallic 991.2.

As our drive started we did face our one and only true obstacle, the lights were out at Cactus/101. In true AZPCA spirit all 3 groups successfully navigated the trouble and we were off on our drive. We must thank the organizers of this drive because the route they chose was perfect in every way. The drive took us through some very interesting neighbourhood’s that both Alison and myself had not been through before which made the drive very fresh, scenic and entertaining. The brief planned stop so all members could gather up was pure genius.

| 26 |

After first zipping past the entrance to Bartlett Lake, we were treated to an absolutely amazing twisty, dipping road that saw Group1 pass Group2 and then once Group2 turned around we passed by Group 3 in the other direction.

When we did enter onto Bartlett Lake Rd for our final spirited drive before lunch, we all indulged in yet another mesmerizing stretch of tarmac that gave both our group and the passing cars a parade of all things Porsche.

At the end of our journey, we were delighted to find a very welcoming staff and an amazing meal put on by The Cove Restaurant. The food, the company of friends and the cars made the Bartlett Lake drive truly EPIC.

AUTOCROSS

AUTOCROSS SEASON SERIES 2021/2022 EVENT #4 STORY BY KENNETH MITCHELL PHOTOS BY KIM KEMPER

The AZPCA Region Autocross Event #4 of the 2021/2022 season was held at Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP), in Litchfield Park, on Saturday, December 11, 2021, just before the Region’s Holiday Party and the Winter Solstice. The autocrossing season is at the half-way point and this event is in the archives as another great event. At the start of the event, the weather was clear and cold. How cold was it, well it was cold enough to build an igloo and not have it melt before late morning. The afternoon session was a smidgen warmer but, not quite AZPCA Region Autocross perfect. | 28 |

However, the cold morning did not discourage 44 drivers from coming out and having a lot of fun driving their Porsche cars on another well-designed course by the Autocross Chairs, Kim K. and Rick A. The course consisted of two-loops in opposite directions, a couple of off-set gates and slaloms, and of course (no pun intended) the front showcase straightaway. The event consisted of three separately timed laps in both the morning and afternoon sessions.

The AZPCA Region Autocross Series is not a series, per se, and there are no winning points for an award or even an atta-persons (being gender neutral) but, on an occasion maybe a mentioning of “nice run”. Nor are there separate competition classes. This series is just a season of 8 or so events throughout the year for the members to come together and have fun with their Porsche cars in a controlled and safe environment. The Autocross Chairs elected to create two disparate car type groups (Group “P” and Group “X”) to make it fair for bragging rights among the drivers. Group “P” is for Porsche cars that are truly street legal, licensed and insured for the public highway that have at the most just a few minor performance tweaks, and is the type of Porsche you would want to drive on one of Rook Younger’s driving tours. Group “X” is for the non Porsche cars some stock and some with “Extreme Performance Alterations and Modifications” whereas, these types of cars may not be street legal, licensed or insured for the public highway. This event had a variety of Porsche cars. There was the usual contingent of Carreras, Boxsters, and Caymans, including a GT4; along with a couple of 944 Turbos, a Macan GTS, and a 968. In Group “P”, the Best-Time-In-Group (BTIG) was driven by Eric S., in his 2006 Porsche Carrera S, with 51.797 seconds. Eric’s morning time of 51.829 seconds would still have earned him the BTIG honors. The runner ups were Kim K., in his 2016 Porsche GT3 RS, with 52.158 seconds; and Robert T., in his 2017 Porsche Carrera Turbo, 53.079 seconds. Eric was on a mission, and he was not going to settle for just being a bridesmaid. He drove his Porsche like he stole it. Good job Eric. In Group “X”, AZPCA Region member, Ealing J., earned the BTIG time with a 51.306 seconds and fellow AZPCA member, Ken M., was the bridesmaid of the AZPCA drivers in this Group and his best lap time was 52.157 seconds. Because of the disparities with the cars in both groups it would be difficult and not fair to compare the lap times among these drivers, and their lap time differences may not reflect the driver’s true driving ability. The “Top Cone Killer” for this event was Darin D., in his 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo, with three cone kills. Eric T., in his 2014 Porsche Cayman S, followed Darin with two “Cone Kills” and Pete P., in his Macan GTS, ended up tagging a cone on his second run in the morning session. It appears that three “Cone Kills”, is the magic number of “kills” for the driver to win the top cone killer honors. Of course, this is only for fun, shaming not allowed, we like mentioning who were the “Cone Killers” for this event. Why, because these events are all about having “Fun” and “cone kills” are a big part of it. There were three new AZPCA Region members with newly acquired Porsche cars at this event. Robert K., in his 2013

coordinating with the Region’s “Going Places” Newsletter Editor in providing the event articles, and the most critical task of all – going before the Region’s Executive Board in attaining the Board’s approval to host the events.

Robert’s best lap time was 77.532 seconds. Brian’s best lap time was 58.498 seconds and KC’s best lap time was 67.266 seconds. Welcome to the Club and the AZPCA Region. All three of you will have a lot of fun being members of the AZPCA Region.

As a Region Member and the author of this article, and I’m sure the other Region autocross members, will join me in saying, “THANK YOU” to the Autocross Chairs, Kim K. and Rick A. for taking on this immense commitment to ensure the AZPCA Region members and invited guests are having fun driving their Porsche cars.

Apparently, Don P., a Southern Arizona PCA Region member, must have heard about the fun-packed AZPCA Region autocross events and the renowned lunch provided by the Region so he elected to drive up from Tucson in his air-cooled Carrera 993 to see for himself. Don’s best lap time was 65.098 seconds. Nice to see him come up and have fun with the AZPCA Region. Hopefully, we’ll see him at the future events. (Author’s Note: The Carrera 993 was the last of the air-cooled Carreras and the first for the six-speed manual transmission and the Weissach Axle.) These events would not be possible if it wasn’t for the help of a lot of volunteers that are willing to go above and beyond their minimum event work obligation and pitch-in to make the events fun for the members. The day before the event, there is the site setup crew consisting of Ken O., William P., Dane T., Chris M. Jim E. and the Autocross Chairs, Rick A., and Kim K., who spend several hours preparing the site by placing the cones in accordance with the course design plan, mark the cone placements, setup the Grid area, and make the course safe by blow-off the dirt and debris from the course. After the event, the Teardown helpers consisting of Ealing J., Jonathan B., Dave M., Eric S among so many others, we just want to express our appreciation to everyone for helping place all the equipment back into the Storage Container.

The next event is scheduled for Saturday, February 19, 2022, and the deadline to register is Friday, February 18, 2022, at 3:00PM/1500 Hours, AST. In order to register for the event, you will need to log-in to your motorsportreg.com account and sign up, and complete the “Speedwaiver”, prior to the registration deadline. The completion of the “Speedwaiver” is a must prior to coming to the event, and if for some reason you are having some difficulty in completing the speed waiver, don’t hesitate in contacting the Autocross Chairs at autocross@az.pca. org for help. The following event is March 19, 2022 and the event registration will be posted to the motorsportreg.com events page shortly. And in April, there will be “Two” autocross events, yes, two events, the 9th and the 30th. The April 30th event will be the last event of the season. So, mark your personal social calendar with those two dates. More than likely, there will be no September event this year, due to typical higher temps in September. The 2022/2023 autocross season will commence on October 15, 2022. We hope to see you at the next event. Have a nice and wonderful Valentine’s Day. AZPCA A-X #4, December 11, 2021

The Autocross Co-Chairs are very grateful for this help and would like to thank all the volunteers for devoting their valuable time in helping to make these great events possible. Without their help these events would not be possible for everyone’s fun and enjoyment. In addition to the help from the volunteers, there are a lot of behind-the-scenes tasks performed by the Autocross Chairs for making these events possible for the members. There are numerous critical tasks such as, scheduling the events a year in advance, creating event announcements in the club website, making sure the site rental agreement is in place, creating the motorsportreg.com events for registration, ensuring that the “Speed Waiver” is completed by the members, coordinating the setup crew, coordinate the setup time with the AMP Site Manager, design the course plan, developing the event run and work order plan, acquiring the event insurance coverage, arranging the Region provided lunch, general event management of operations, the driver’s safety meeting prior to the start of the event, preparing and transmitting the event results to the drivers,

THE NEW YEAR, BACKWARD AND FORWARD STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER

I

’ve been thinking about, almost dreading, this column for some time. I mean, it’s a tradition, right? To look back and forward, and try to make sense of everything that’s been happening, to us and to our world. And then stare into the abyss and try to sort out what’s to come, in the coming year and beyond. When it comes to the car world, and that subset of the car world we all love, led by our favorite marque, the Porsche, it’s a scary proposition. Let me give you an example. On the one hand, you have the movement to preserve, even … dare I use the word? Ok, I will … to grow the sport, the hobby, the enthusiasm we have for automobiles. It was all summed up in a full-page story in The New York Times on Dec. 17, 2021. That’s right, full page, with color photos. The headline read “A Classic Car Insurer’s Vision to ‘Save Driving.’” The piece ostensibly covered McKeel Hagerty’s company, Hagerty Insurance, going public – the first day of trading, ringing the bell to start trading at the NY Stock Exchange. All that stuff. But McKeel and company did something more. They set up an exhibit, out on Wall Street. Yes, Wall Street. And they actually called it Cars and Caffeine. The exhibit encompassed three cars, a 1921 Duesenberg Model A Coupe, a 1966 Ford GT40, an actual racecar that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and, between these two, in a glass case, what looks like a late ‘60s/early ‘70s Porsche 911. Orange. Why would an insurance company actually do this? If you have your baby covered by Hagerty Insurance, like I do, you probably already know the answer. McKeel is on a mission. “I think that if we can help steward along the reasons that people drive and love cars, other than to get from Point A to Point B, then we win,” he’s quoted in the piece. There’s more. The author writes that he went for a drive with McKeel in a BMW 2002 Tii to the tip of Lower Manhattan. “As we completed our drive and discussion, he reiterated his mission to ‘save driving.’ But he explained that this mantra was not meant as a combative slogan for facing down incursions like congestion pricing, or driverless cars. ‘I’m not envisioning us as some kind of N.R.A. of the car world,’ he said. ‘I like the love and joy and fun of the automobile….’” To that end, McKeel says in the piece that a primary goal is invigorating younger generations. And he notes that the last two years “’were interesting years, because for the first time, more than 50 percent of our new customers were born after 1965, so Gen X-ers and millennials.’” I finished the piece, sat back and smiled. Maybe, just maybe, he can pull it off, I thought. And then I read an on-line review of the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata. In The Car Connection. And a black cloud started forming in my brain. Let’s start with their likes. To quote directly, peerless handling, peerless manual transmission, peerless affordable roadster, RF hard top, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Uh, yeah!

Then I read their dislikes; impractical for everything but driving, irritating infotainment, no storage space, getting expensive and flimsy cupholders. They summed it up this way, “It creates a visceral experience more thrilling and pure than many other more expensive sports cars. That’s the best thing about the MX-5 Miata. As an everyday go-getter, it shrinks to the task … and its size discriminates against taller humans …. For smaller folks, the Miata cocoons occupants as well as it hugs the road.” They note that “The roadster rides so close to the ground the driver sits at eye-level with the door handles of most other vehicles.” And they gave it an overall score of 5.8 out of a possible 10. Which is, well, low. Speaking of driving at eye-level to the door handles of most other vehicles, I then read The Car Connection’s review of the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. The what? “(it’s) a four-door hatchback that’s being marketed as an electric SUV. It offers more than 300 miles of range in some versions and arrives to an increasingly competitive cohort including the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID-4.” This is state of the art mass market, folks. They continue, “The Ioniq 5 is built on a higher-voltage platform, making it among an elite group including the Lucid Air and Porsche Taycan. Its 800-volt charging enables rates rivaling those of Tesla’s latest models, with a 10% to 80% charge in as little as 18 minutes, if you happen to find a 350-kw DC fast-charging connector. “That helps with the packaging, the power and everything else,” they write. Their overall score? To quote directly, “The Ioniq 5 has a strong feature set and a perfect green score that combine to earn it an impressive TCC Rating of 8.4 out of 10.” Ok, let’s regroup here. I think we should all applaud McKeel Hagerty. And Mazda. And, for sure, Porsche. For helping keep automotive enthusiasm alive. Against the onslaught of utilitarian “vehicles.”

Because I turn the proverbial page and what do I see? Spy shots of what’s rumored to be next year’s Porsche variant, the 911 Safari. Which, let’s face it, takes hair-splitting to a new level. And more spy shots of, say it isn’t true, the Ferrari SUV. To be called the Puresangue. Which translates to, yeah, I know, my head is exploding, “Pureblood.” The next time you’re stopped at a light, look at the vehicles around you. How many are not SUVs? And how many are not painted black, or white, or maybe silver? McKeel, if you can reverse the homogenization and marginalization of automotive enthusiasm, I’ll renew the policy on my 911 SC for life. Happy New Year to you and yours.

EAST VALLEY FIVE “7’s“ DRIVE! STORY BY RICK FORBES PHOTOS BY JIM BULTEMA

O

ver thirty cars met in east Mesa for the start of the five “7’s” drive organized by Mark Manente.

We were organized into three groups of roughly ten cars each separated by a staggered fifteen minute start time. The drive followed US 60 to Superior where we took Arizona state route 177. The road became very interesting to drive with rolling hills and fast sweepers. The drive took us past open desert, farmland and a burn area from last years Mescal and Telegraph forest fires. Beautiful back drops of Arizona mountains and blue skies were savored for thirty miles until the junction with Arizona route 79. Along Arizona route 79 we passed the monument to Hollywood cowboy Tom Mix, where he had crashed his 1937 Cord Phaeton ending his life. The drive then turned into long straights of newly paved smooth asphalt with the back drop of the beautiful Catalina Mountains. Upon reaching Florence the group split up with some people having a late lunch at various restaurants in Florence or heading home to Phoenix.
