PRESIDENT’S CORNER Ma r k
B a ker
Hello All:
T
he temperature is has now gone over 100 F and we are heading into the hotter part of our season. The club tends to be slightly less active at this time of year as the track events stop until the fall and even the social events taper down. We still have Monthly meetings every month except July, and there are some fun Driving Tours and Porsches and Pancakes. Events tend to sell out quickly, so sign up early to ensure you can reserve a spot. Our Webmaster and Secretary (Jack Arnold) has stepped down from his posts. We would all like to express our thanks and gratitude to Jack for all his efforts and talents in helping our club. We have found a new Webmaster, Marla McDermott. Thanks Marla, for stepping up. We are also in search of a new Secretary. If you have an interest in volunteering for this position, reach out to me. My wife and I just returned from a two-week adventure in Italy. We travelled to the Amalfi coast, Rome, Florence, Venice, and Lake Como. Surprisingly I only saw two Porsches in my entire time there. Considering the crazy traffic and drivers there, it would be difficult to enjoy the driving capabilities of a Porsche on the roads that we travelled. Our upcoming events are: •June 1 – Monthly Meeting – Persian Room •June 8 – Driving Tour – Day Trip to Prescott •June 18 – Porsches and Pancakes – Schmooze Bar in Old Town Scottsdale •July 24 - 26 – Driving Tour – Alpine Tour •July 6 – NO Monthly Meeting •July 16 – Driving Tour and Picnic – Red Rock State Park •July 23 – Porsches and Pancakes – The Thumb Safe Driving
Mark
We are pleased to announce that effective immediately we have a new Webmaster. Her name is Marla McDermott and she brings experience and enthusiasm to her new role. We all welcome her as she is also a new club member as of last week.

I
’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it... I have wonderful news this month! A new member, Lisa Wong, has volunteered to take on the newsletter Editor position. She has great skills and experience to take on Going Places. Welcome to the Arizona region! Lisa and I will work together over the next few months as I transition more of the responsibilities over to her. We also have a new Webmaster taking over our club website, Marla McDermott. Marla also just bought her first Porsche and wanted to get involved with the club! How fortunate for us she choose to relocate to Arizona. This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Robin Grenko for contributing “Treffen at The Broadmoor.” Robin will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. Looks like Robin and Dee had a wonderful time attending their first Treffen event. The next Treffen event is scheduled in September to Bend,Oregon. Registration opens on June 29th at 3 pm EDT (noon AZT). treffen.pca.org These events sell out in a mater of minutes! See the promo on page 35. I appreciate the articles and pictures that members send me because without them there would be no newsletter. Just remember if you want to take a cover worthy photo, it needs to be vertical orientation. Check out the newsletter and club calendar of events coming up for the latest information at az.pca.org/events Hope to see you soon at an upcoming event.

C ha i r
T
he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Membership Chair, I would like to introduce featured members, Roger and Jane Winston.
1. When did you join PCA?
I have been a member since 1994, first with the Nord Stern Region in Minnesota, and then when that was reformed Jane and I joined the Dakota Region. We become snowbirds and split our time between Fargo, ND and Scottsdale, AZ joining the Arizona Region, too.
2. What Porsche(s) do you have?
We have owned several p-cars: 1968 911, 1984 911, 2012 Boxster, and 2016 Macan S.
3. Where are you from?
I am from Fargo, ND, and my wife, Jane is from Wahpeton, ND.
4. Family?
We have three daughters.
5. Work background or trade?
I am retired from 23 years in broadcasting, and Jane is retired from a career in family medicine and geriatrics.
| 12 |
6. Next upgrade?
My favorites are the 1968 911, but I could be tempted by 997.2 Cabriolet, or a Butternut Yellow 1960s Corvair.
7. Favorite memory with a car?
My first car growing up was a 1967 Chevy Corvair, 140 hp, 4 on the floor. The 68 seemed like a fun comparison (and did you know the Corvair Society of America actually sold bumper stickers that said “Poor Man’s Porsche”?). I found it as a trade-in at the local dealer and drove it home on a test drive. Back in the 80s, women had their colors done and were told they were a winter, spring, summer or fall. My first wife was a fall (earth tones). She looked out the front door, said it was one of her colors, and I took that to mean permission. She was surprised when I came back home with it, but did grow to love the car.
8. Top 3 cars you would own?
We like them all, but if I had to name my top three, the 1968 911 would be right up there (if you’ve ever driven an early short-wheel-base 911 or 912 there’s really nothing like it).

Day Trip to Prescott Wednesday, June 8
Join your PCA friends for a mid week drive to cool Prescott, with lunch at the Gurley Street Grill near the historic Courthouse Square.
For this drive we will make a change from our usual route. After the fun and scenic climb up Yarnell Hill from Wickenburg, we will turn off at Kirkland Junction and follow Iron Springs Road through Skull Valley and enter Prescott from the northwest. Another road in Central Arizona you will want to return to in your Porsche! The drive takes us into downtown Prescott, where we will have lunch at the Gurley Street Grill. The Gurley St. Grill is located in a historic brick building which originally housed the Mulvenon Saloon. The building was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1900 that leveled most of downtown Prescott. Many of the bricks were reused, and you can spot a few of the charred ones throughout the interior of the restaurant. After lunch you may want to stroll around the Courthouse Square, or visit one of the many historic sites, museums, galleries, and shops in the Prescott area. Register early, as this drive is likely to sell out.

Driving Tour & Picnic at Red Rock State Park Saturday, July 16 No part of our state is more beautiful than the spectacular Red Rock Country surrounding Sedona. This drive’s destination is Red Rock State Park, a 286-acre nature preserve and environmental education center with stunning scenery. The driving route will take the “back way” toward Sedona, avoiding the congestion that is inevitable on the main route. At the end of the scenic drive we will enjoy a lunch buffet at the park. After lunch you will want to check out the park visitor center, where you can explore the exhibits and view films which present Sedona history and wildlife, and which will take you on a flying tour of the red rocks with some phenomenal aerial scenes. You can explore the trails, spy for wildlife, or just enjoy the beautiful scenery. When you are ready to leave the park you can go into Sedona for shopping or other activities, then return on the Red Rock Scenic Byway to I-17. Or you can drive back on the less-heavily traveled but still interesting route through Cornville back to I-17.

PORSCHES AND PANCAKES Saturday - July 23, 2022 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. THE THUMB 9393 East Bell Rd Scottsdale, AZ 85260 Join us at the eclectic and unique Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market under the Chandelier for a memorable Porsche & Pancakes Breakfast. It’s Saturday morning and after a long hard week at the office, you decide that you need to get some high-octane gas for the race car you are taking to the DE next week, get the spouse’s and your car washed and waxed by hand, find a really nice wine to take to your neighbors for dinner tonight and you are craving a hearty breakfast that you will top off with a cappuccino and a pastry. It sounds like you will be making 5-6 stops and getting back home late this afternoon, doesn’t it? Well it doesn’t have to be that way because you can do all of the above and more with a single stop at Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market, including an optional hand car wash if we can pull the logistics together to determine demand for that Saturday morning. From the outside at its Bell Road location it looks like a typical gas station/car wash but once you enter the front door you realize that you and Toto are no longer in Kansas. In fact, just to the right of the main entry is a dining area with a chandelier. When did you last see a chandelier in a gas station? Bottom line, sign-up and come on down, good food and friendship promised for the event! Order off the full menu and pay for your order (Breakfast Entrees under $15)

AZPCA AUTOCROSS SEASON EVENT #8 STORY BY KENNETH MITCHELL PHOTO BY KIM KEMPER
T
he AZPCA Region 20212022 Autocross Season Event #8 was held at the Arizona Motorsports Park, on Saturday, April 9, 2022. The drivers were treated to a complimentary AZPCA Region Cooling Towel to help with staying cool and safe from heat exhaustion. Normally, this would have been the last event prior to the summer break but, the Autocross Chairs, Kim K. and Rick A., decided to give the members a bonus event, which was held on Saturday, April 30, 2022. The weather was warm and so was the competition in both Group “P” and “X”. Thirty-five drivers enjoyed another course designed by a or the Mystery Course Designer. (We are still not sure if there are more than one mystery course designer.) The drivers drove three runs each in both the morning and afternoon sessions. The course was very easy to follow and traverse in a counterclockwise direction that consisted of a few sweeper turns that were connected by a few gates, and one gotcha-turn leading onto the front showcase straightaway with a mini slalom before the start/finish line. The gotcha-turn required you to be patient with your entry speed and tight with your turning maneuver or you would end up exiting very wide and driving around the first slalom cone that would add more time to your lap time. This event had two new AZPCA members joining in on the fun. Jonathan M. decided to see what all the talk was about having fun at an AZPCA Region Autocross Event. Jonathan drove his 2010 Porsche Cayman to his best lap time of 64.100 seconds. Jonathan – welcome to the Club and hopefully, we’ll see you at future events. The second new AZPCA Member is Joel S., in his 2020 Porsche Carrera, and he joined PCA in February of this year. This is not Joel’s first autocross event. Joel has been attending several events this year prior to submitting his membership application to join PCA. Joel is the father of AZPCA Region Member Dave S. and the grandfather of Cameron S., who were featured in a Going Places event article as a three-generation family enjoying what our Region has to offer to the members. Joel’s best lap time was 53.397 seconds. | 22 |

There was a three-car battle for the top spot in Group “P”. Kim K., in his 2016 Porsche GT3 RS, ran a 50.250 second lap time to just edge out Martin R., in his 2007 Porsche Cayman S, to his best time of 50.335 seconds. Eric S., in his 2006 Porsche Carrera S, ran a lap time of 50.423 seconds. Kim and Eric’s best lap times were achieved in the afternoon session and Martin had to settle with his best lap time from morning session.
Six other drivers only had one cone kill each. But, the driver to be noted with this one cone kill removes him from the list of being totally clean for the season. Unfortunately, Dave M. had to be removed from the list with his one cone kill for this event. Dave was the last, of the 100% event attended drivers, to come off the “Clean List”. Sorry, Dave, looks like the “Cone Gods” wouldn’t have it any other way.
In Group “X” AZPCA Member, Ken M. landed on the top podium spot with a 50.07. Jonathan B., drove his Group “X” car to his best time of 50.421 Seconds. It appears that Jonathan is getting use to the new autocross competition tires and the car is responding well. AZPCA Member Dave S., drove his best lap time of 50.469 seconds, just 48 thousandths of a second behind Jonathan. Dave’s son, Cameron, drove his best lap time of 51.406 seconds.
During the lunch break and amongst of all the “Paddock Talk”, one of the drivers was overheard that he was going to submit a course design plan for the next event to the Autocross Chairs, for acceptance. This driver wants to add some “Old School Autocross” style elements. Old School Autocross elements could mean that the driver will be able to pick their driving lines in turning elements. Most old school turning elements are square rather than round, and in most cases open up into a straight whereas, you may be able to induce a little four-wheel drifting exiting the turn. There could be some lane change elements and more straightaways. And this may mean less slaloms and off-set gates. Old School Autocross elements are fun stuff.
The “Cone Kills” for this event was about event average (eleven cone kills) as compared to the last event (twenty-two cone kills) where records were broken in several categories. However, since Joel S. is now a proud AZPCA Region Member, he was added to the cone kill drivers list and the cone kills he was awarded from the previous events are now included in his season totals. Joel S. was the “Top Cone Killer” for this event with five kills. These five kills along with the previous events kills, places him with a total of thirteen kills overall which ties him for the Season Overall Top Cone Kills with Eric T.
The new Autocross Season will commence on October 15, 2022, and registration is open for this event. As of this writing (April), the signup for the new season is well underway with several registration. By the time this article is published, it is very possible that the registrations could be nearing the maximum event capacity. I won’t wait very much longer. You could be placed on the waiting list if your registration is beyond the maximum event capacity.
There is one more event left for an opportunity to break this tie. AZPCA A-X #8, April 9, 2022

Treffen at The Broadmoor STORY AND PHOTOS BY Robin Grenko
D
ee and I had an opportunity to attend the Porsche Treffen event at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. As it is one of our favorite resorts, and we are recent first time Porsche owners, we could not pass this up. After strategically planning what to pack for various events, quickly changing weather and the storage available in Dee’s 2017 Cayman S, we embarked on our 11-hour drive. The Cayman S is an excellent car for the mountain roads that awaited us in Colorado. Not so much for endless interstate driving. Porsche should recommend chiropractors for after the drive. We rotated driving every 2-3 hours and some light yoga in between shifts.
The Broadmoor Resort.
Dee and I arrived a day early and decided to tour the Royal Gorge before checking in. We met another Porsche couple at the entrance, took the tour together and quickly bonded. We stopped at the Abbey at Holy Cross Winery on the way before check in at the Broadmoor. We met several people who had attended 5, 6 even 7 Treffens around the country. Most drove, some long distances for sure, some flew in and rented cars for the event. There were two couples from Arkansas. The husbands drove and their wives flew in. Worked well for all. The event was very well executed. The army of volunteers were welcoming and worked tirelessly together to ensure every aspect of our trip surpassed our expectations. There were receptions, dinners, activities to keep everyone busy, and an excellent opportunity to mingle and meet friends who share a common passion.
Snow on the mountains in May!
There were several tours planned for every day. They ranged from Royal Gorge, which included a scenic train ride through the canyon. The bridge is closed to vehicles but Porsche arranged for the Treffen entourage to drive across and take pictures. Another popular tour was the drive-up Pike’s Peak. This tour was accompanied by former Pike’s Peak race champions, who stopped along the route to tell the history of the road and share some racing stories. The Peak Road was only open to 11,500 ft or 16 miles of the 19-mile road. Once the guardrails ended and the shear drops next to you increased, you had a real respect for those that race here. There was a trip to Cripple Creek, a small gold camp on the backside of Pike Peak. At 10,000 ft there was still snow around. Treffen arranged for us to have a personalized tour at the Cripple Creek Museum with several hosts in period pieces detailing the rich history. The roads to and from Cripple Creek were pure twisty nirvana. You can tell from the smiles at every rest stop.
| 24 |
All lined up and ready to head out.
There was a tour labeled “Mountain Roads”. We did not take that one, but those that did said it was extremely fun, and lived up to its name. There was a tour that explored the Olympic training facilities. Every tour of course served up amazing roads, breathtaking vistas, and fine local lunches. Every night we had social activities as everyone recapped their day and shared pictures of their adventures. There was a free day where you could explore on your own. We took advantage of this to partake in the Broadmoor’s many outdoor adventures. I went ziplining and rappelling. The highest and longest was 509 feet above the canyon floor and 1800 feet long. Truly exhilarating! We also took falconry lessons, and got to get up close and personal with these amazing birds. The Broadmoor’s founder Spencer Penrose, also built the Pike’s Peak Road so he could test his collection of luxury cars. He also built an amazing museum dedicated to the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb. We had several racers give their accounts of past and future races before they let us loose to explore the museum. If in the area, this is worth a stop. Several of the events were sponsored by Treffen’s newest corporate sponsor, Princess Cruises. They even had a new Taycan in Princess wrap that will be given away at the end of the year. Adams Polishes sponsored a car wash station every day with their wide variety of quality products.
Dee participating in falcony lessons!
All in all, it was an amazing trip. For new Porsche owners, we met several friends from around the country and are already making plans to get together in the future. We have one regret, we did not visit Porsche Colorado Springs, they were a great local partner and welcomed all the attendees at their dealership. One highlight that everyone enjoyed was walking through the parking garage that was reserved just for us. There was such an amazing collection of models that spanned several decades. We look forward to attending future Treffen events. Sunday was departure day, and after some serious stretching, we climbed into the car and headed West.
My adventure day.
All tucked in for the night. GOING PL ACES

PARTS FOR THE 1971 PORSCHE 914 MECHANICAL REFRESH
STORY and PHOTOS BY DARRYL DEPPE, Pacific Northwest PCA Region CONTRIBUTED BY DENNIS ROOD
Parts for the 1974 Porsche 914 Mechanical Refresh.
P
icking up from last month’s introduction to my winter project, the subject will be about parts acquisition for the complete mechanical refresh of my first Porsche, a 1974 914 I originally restored 30 years ago. As I was finishing up the restoration of my 1964 356C last year, well into the pandemic chaos, I found myself encountering longer and longer waits on back ordered parts from my usual sources; Stoddard’s/NLA Parts, Pelican Parts and Sierra Madre Collection. As I started into the 914 it occurred to me as I saw full container ships at anchor outside backed-up ports on the evening news, the way to avoid supply chain interruptions was to make scouring the Internet for parts the critical path on this project. I did not want to be marooned on my 4-post lift with a partially assembled rear suspension or unable to install the long-block engine when it returns from Jack Morris due to missing parts to complete the assembly. Now in retrospect, I’m glad I did because some parts took over a month to arrive and they were already here stateside. As I refreshed my memory looking through the thick file folder of receipts from the first restoration back in 1992, parts for 914s were kind of hit or miss. Printed catalogs from vendors like Automobile Atlanta, Tweaks, Automation and Performance | 26 |
Products were the only “go-to” sources. Most of my parts were used, harvested from now long-gone local junkyards like Bry’s in West Seattle, Fitz European where the Woodinville Costco now resides and the goldmine hidden behind the Campbell Nelson Volkswagen dealership in Edmonds. Back then the lowly 914 was just another Volkswagen, so it was like Pick-and-Pull where you were allowed to enter the junkyard and treasure hunt on your own for those elusive fasteners, spare relays, chrome bumpers, fog light grills, door handles, you name it, if you could find it, it was yours. Growing up with my dad, a professional Mopar master technician who taught me how it’s done on our junkyard scrounging adventures made it one of the most enjoyable aspects of restoring a car! One thing that was certain, back then Porsche AG didn’t embrace the 914 so “genuine” parts were actually just NOS parts gathering dust on warehouse shelves and pretty much nonexistent for those obscure items needed to make a beat-up junk look like a jewel.
The 21st century junkyard is now TheSamba.com classifieds and eBay stores. TheSamba.com classified ads are a roll of the dice with no buyer protection but sometimes it’s worth the risk when a part must be found. As the popularity of 914 restoration has grown, so have wrecking yards that specialize in them as eBay stores. Once I discover an eBay seller that I like doing business with via “buy it now” auctions, I develop a relationship with them over the phone. You would be surprised at how much some of these guys enjoy talking over typing. Finding the complete set of front and rear factory sway bars for my car was accelerated by my ability to talk Mopar with Rich, a.k.a. “hphporschesales” in California who drag raced them “back in the day” and Porsche parts are what he does now to support his Viper habit! I noticed another eBay seller that I buy from frequently, “mattman1955” has recently started advertising in Panorama. Matt always has great communication, fast delivery with tracking numbers and what-you-see-is-what-you-get photos in his listings so he is taking eBay’s cut to his profits out of the loop. Over the 30 years of owning my 914, I noticed a gradual growth in the aftermarket with some vendors reproducing things like sheet metal pressings for rust repair and rubber weatherstrip seals. The parts did work but really lacked the precision fit and quality of genuine Porsche parts.
Then within the last 10 years or so, companies like Restoration Design, 914 Rubber, PMB Performance and bellwether Automobile Atlanta really stepped up with better quality, more offerings and excellent component rebuilding services. Parts that I could have only dreamed of on my 914 and 912 restorations became readily available and have made it so much easier to save cars that would have been cut up for parts only a few years
earlier. The one area that has been disappointing is the availability of obsolete D-Jetronic and L-Jetronic fuel injection components. The particular L-Jetronic system my 914 used was only found in 1974 and 1975 1.8 models, with several critical one-year-only components and used in less than 1 out of 5 of the total 914s produced. Frustration with my 914 sitting for months broken down while I was searching for L-Jetronic parts or waiting for component rebuilds led me to the decision to box it up and store it away in favor of Weber 40 IDF carburetors.
Seizing on all the renewed interest, the big aftermarket parts producers like URO and Jorg have really embraced the 914 market recently by offering a huge selection of 914-only parts at Volkswagen parts prices. I make that distinction after watching prices for 911, 912 and 356 parts rising at about the same rate as the values of the cars over the last few years. Porsche is also getting involved again in producing more 914 parts though their Porsche Classic program. I was lucky enough to find a full set of 4 new CV-joints on the Pelican Parts website that were new production by Porsche Classic after being listed as NLA for decades. The good thing was I didn’t have to swap out the complete original rear drive axles for some proprietary aftermarket ones. The bad thing is each Porsche CV-joint was $172 whereas stock aftermarket OEM Meyle ones for a SWB 901 transaxle are only $38 each. While nearly 5 times more expensive, still much more economical than the complete Porsche Classic 914 rear axles at $892 each! When you buy parts for a car nearing 50 years old, you need to expect the unexpected and hunt for proven German or US manufacturers like Sachs or Sebo for clutch and flywheel parts, FAG or SKF for bearings and ATE or Zimmerman for brakes while they still make them. One company that’s really been interesting to watch is AA Performance Products and the quality of their Chinese-manufactured parts improving over time. Talking to Jack Morris about my VW type-4 2.0 engine build, he now considers AA pistons and cylinder sets better quality than Mahle because of Mahle outsourcing their production to China. The bottom line is Chinesemade parts are only as good as the quality control of the manufacturer outsourcing their production. It is incumbent on the manufacturer to confirm Rockwell hardness and conformance to dimensional tolerances with constant random sampling from each and every batch received from China. As Jack Morris lamented recently, the skills of the mechanic used to be the weakest link in restoring drivetrain components not the parts.

PARTS FOR THE 1971 PORSCHE 914 MECHANICAL REFRESH Continued from page 27
The other 21st century 914 aftermarket surprise I discovered is that the Internet has opened the doors for high volume drop shippers like PartsGeek.com and AutohausAZ.com to sell the same parts I get at vendors like Stoddard and Pelican for about half the price. Their websites also provide the ability to see realtime if parts are in stock or not. With a few mouse clicks on a cold winter evening, I can go down my shopping list, which for me are the individual .pdf pages from the Porsche Classic Parts PET (Porsche Elektronischer Teilekatalog) from the Porsche Cars North America website. By printing just, the specific pages that apply to my model 914 containing both the exploded diagram followed with their numerically organized parts number and description pages makes for a very thin parts manual I keep in a “project build” binder. I simply highlighted the part numbers and quantities required and then went to the vendor websites armed with the information needed to make precise ordering easy... my wife would probably say too easy. Then I made a list of what’s coming and waited for the Fed-Ex or UPS guy like a kid waiting for Santa. I set up a table covered with a moving blanket in a corner of the shop and as the parts arrived, I laid them out logically like a military dress inspection, shockingly exposing the degree of my OCD! Once they all arrived, I took a photo of the parts all laid out that
| 28 |
I keep on my Chromebook so that I can go back and look at it to refresh my memory months later. Then I Ziploc bagged, labeled and boxed them up in logical groups, such as “transaxle” or “rear sway bar” and stored them in a convenient storage location. As you can see from the photos I’ve included, it might sound kind of silly but there really are a lot of parts to keep track of and it’s proven to be a great tool in remembering what and where things go when I start reassembly. Now that all the parts have arrived, I’ve gone ahead with disassembling the rear suspension and the dirty “working in a coal mine” job of degreasing and stripping the undercoating and loose paint off the entire underside from the bulkhead behind the seats to the rear bumper. The main goal is to search for any surface rust that’s formed or I missed in the 30 years since I last did this exercise under the car on jack stands laying on a creeper. On these pre-zinc-dipped cars, the factory seam sealer dries out and comes loose, exposing bare metal which quickly flash rusts. Cleaning up and arresting it before a new coat of 3M Seam Sealing Caulk and paint is applied to protect it for another go-round is time consuming. Hopefully by next month I’ll have it all done so I can share the before-and-after photos with you.

REMEMBRANCES OF THINGS PAST
STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER
P
lease indulge me. I’m writing this on Mother’s Day. Which, this year, is very significant to me. Because my mother passed away several months ago. My mother was 93. When I tell that to people, I often get back, “oh, you should be thankful for that, for her long life.” And I am. Although her body fell apart, my mother had her wits about her until the end. I’m the oldest of three. My parents were relatively young when they had me. So, in recent years, I found myself one of few people my age with a parent still alive. And, even more rare, someone I could talk to. But that didn’t make the experience of her passing any easier. A friend said to me, “now you’re an orphan.” And she was right. I hadn’t thought about that. I knew I’d miss her badly. Although she was 2,000 miles away, and I hadn’t lived near my parents in four decades. I had been visiting every few months, for years. And we spoke weekly, if not more often. But the idea of that safety net, of that soft nest to fall back into … suddenly it was gone. After the funeral, which was on Long Island, NY, I rode down to suburban Maryland with my sisters. And, the next day, we went to my mother’s abode in an independent living community. And we started wandering around the apartment. Opening shoeboxes. File cabinets. Sifting through piles of notes she had written, about things she needed to do, people she needed to call. What an odd feeling it was, poring over a life that had ended. Sorting through what was left. None of us really wanted much of anything. But I did take a photo collage off the wall. Now, that was very significant to me. Because, in the collage, were photos of my sisters and me as babies. And, partially cropped, a photo of my sisters leaning against, there it was, my first sports car, a ’64 Triumph TR-4. A car that literally changed my life, at 17. I bought that car with every cent I had at the time, all of $800. It was a self-esteem machine. Something that said something about who this inward-focused insecure, directionless teenager really was. And it gave me the self-confidence to go to college and try to actually make something of myself. Above the photo of the Triumph was a photo of my father, washing his first of three Mercedes, in the driveway. A 250S from ’67. He loved that car. Just as he loved the 250C he replaced it with.
And the ’78 450SL that I actually found for him. In Louisville, KY, where I lived for a few years in the early ‘80s. My parents flew out and drove it home. But, alas, I couldn’t find a photo of the 250C or the SL-ella. I couldn’t find a photo of the ’72 2002 I bought when I graduated from college, either. Nor my first Porsche, the ’76 914 I bought in ’78. Nor any other cars that I or my parents had owned. Too bad. I was really hoping to locate a photo of the ‘67 Buick Wildcat convertible that I took my road test in. My mother took me. I drove that car into Manhattan the night of my Senior Prom. Three couples. It’s a wonder my parents let me. It’s a wonder we survived. Nor any photos of the ‘62 Buick LeSabre that the five of us virtually lived in for five weeks in ’62, when we drove crosscountry to LA, and back. But I did see, in that collage, the three boats that my parents owned, during my teen years. On all three boats, the routine was the same. My father was captain. My mother was first mate. But I, I was helmsman. I drove. Of course I drove. I also tried to locate a box, filled with car models I had made, out of kits from – was it Revell? I was having serious memory-land issues. I had last seen this shoebox about 20 years earlier. Unbeknownst to me, my mother had saved three or four cars that I had made from kits, holed up in my basement craft area, which was a plywood sheet, balanced on an old, warped pool table. A 427 Cobra. A Corvette Stingray. An early 911. No luck. But I did take another photo off the wall. This one, with a penciled date on the back, 4/47, was of my parents, and my father’s two older brothers, and their wives, and my father’s younger sister, and his parents, my grandparents. It looks like they were at an affair, a wedding, maybe. Not for my parents. They wouldn’t marry for another year and a half. Today, the only one alive is the wife of my father’s middle brother. And she’s in her mid-90s. When my sisters and I go, maybe my daughters will be able to recognize everyone in the collage photo, and in the group photo. Maybe not. And then, the memories will be lost to time. As I said, I’ve had a lot of trouble with Mother’s Day this year.
