PRESIDENT’S NOTE

Mark

Manente

"I've learned that no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy." Andy Rooney

The club is in our active season with numerous events on the calendar. As always check the club's calendar

and sign up early. But also, if your plans change, please cancel your registration. Most events have members on the waitlist. The theme of this month's letter is how grateful I am for the many volunteers, who fill multiple roles for the club. Flight 45/ Concours d’Elegance just wrapped up! Porsche Chandler was a great host for the event. There are numerous people that deserve recognition for their contributions: Thanks to our Social Chair, Abby Ercoline, for organizing every aspect of Flight 45, registration, food etc. It is a demanding job usually done by both a Flight Chairperson along with the Social Chair. Chief Judge Andy Cole's annual effort to manage the judging process. I sat in on Saturday's Judges' meeting, the organization involved for making sure every volunteer knew their roles was impressive. Thank you all that volunteered your time to make Flight 45 successful. I spent the day at the club's first HPDE of the season at AMP, I can't say enough about all the work that Dan and Kellie Bouet and all the volunteers do to make DE run smoothly. As you know Dan is also our Vice President. The same can be said for Kim Kemper and Rick Althouse for organizing and ensuring our monthly Autocrosses run smoothly. I can go on and on, Frank Grimmelmann, who organized two multi region drives and acts as the summer Porsche and Pancakes chair, and organized the annual Porsche at Polo events; he also serves as a Director at Large. Dennis Rood not only functions as the high season Porsche and Pancakes chair but he organized last years and this Springs "All Porsche Grand Display" in downtown Carefree. Gregg Bull publishes Going Places and is the club's Secretary. Rook Younger, serves as a Director at Large and Driving tour chair with Debbie. Angela Manente assists Gregg and Ali as assistant editor. She evaluated voting programs to present to the board. The board selected Election Runner. She spent hours creating the ballot and email distribution list. So far, the election process seems to be working smoothly. Plus, she edits everything I write for which I am very grateful. Mark Baker and Jeanne organized Casino Night at Alpio's and The Cottonwood wine tour, although Mark admitted Jeanne did the lion’s share of the work. Thank you all who serve the club in multiple ways. I'm sure I may have left out some people but heck I'm old. The board agreed to expand the attendance from 90 to 120 for the Holiday Party on Sunday, December 17th. That may seem like an easy decision; however, as many of you know the club subsidizes the cost of the Holiday Party to encourage participation. So, if you are in town and available, please come join us. Information is on website and sign up on MSR. Also, the board has created the Aman-Steele award. The award recognizes a member that has made a significant contribution to the club for the year. It is going to be a difficult decision as we have many who have organized multiple club activities/events. I am excited to introduce Jennifer Harrenstein, who has agreed to take over as Merchandise Chair from Betsy Andrade. Thank you, Betsy, for a great job as Goodie Store-Merchandise Chair for the last 13 years. Members will be able to purchase the club's logo apparel items on line through the club's website link to the PCA website. Fall is almost here! Make it a great month Mark M

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

PCA AZ Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities Event Cancellation Policy Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events. Event Organizer Responsibilities Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language: Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly. If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

Info on upcoming AZPCA HPDE Events

INDE is an amazing track that you have to experience at least once per year, so join us at INDE Motorsports Ranch on Saturday and Sunday, November 4-5! For this HPDE event, we will also be offering optional Time Trials sessions. What are Time Trials? Leave the excuses at the door and show us your best time! No traffic, just three clean timed laps in the morning and afternoon. Times are broadcast for bragging rights. Transponders are available to rent if you need one. With enough participants, hey, maybe we’ll turn it into a season championship. This is an inexpensive add-on that really adds a lot of fun and competition to the event. There are one- or two-day options, and we will be running a different track configuration on each day to keep it fresh. On top of the normal groups (Novice, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced), we will be offering the “Track Experience” program described above to those interested. There are always amazing cars out at INDE, so come join us. It will be a great weekend! More Details and Registration for INDE: www.msreg.com/inde-2023

Volunteer! As always, we cannot put on these events without the support of drivers and volunteers. If you would like to volunteer for either (or both) of these events, there are volunteer options available on the registration page. We need corner workers for AMP and that will either earn you a $175 MSR credit you can use toward a future track day or $100 cash. Otherwise, if you can help with safety inspections, check-in, lunch pickup, etc etc, feel free to check out the options on the registration. 😊😊 Hope to see you soon! Dan

AZPCA Regional eNEWS

AZPCA REGION eNEWS AZPCA Region publishes several emails each month to notify the members of the upcoming social and driving events and other pertinent Region business and activity information. These emails are known as eNews email blasts and will be identified by the PCA Banner as you see above. It has come to the Region’s attention that several hundred members are not receiving the AZPCA Region’s eNews email blasts. This may be because the PCA National Office may not have your correct email address or there may be a technical problem with your email address. Or the member at one time elected to opt out of receiving the emails and would like to begin receiving them. AZPCA Region would like to help the members in resolving this issue of you not receiving the eNews emails. Prescott Holiday Lights Drive Sunday, December 10, 2023 Come along on this drive and enjoy time celebrating the holidays with your PCA friends! Known as “Arizona’s Christmas City,” Prescott celebrates with lights, music, and festive flair from November-January. Throughout the month of December, the Courthouse Square is aglow with a gorgeous display of lights that adorn more than 100 trees at the iconic courthouse and surrounding plaza. The driving route follows “the Spars,” which we have taken many times on our way to Prescott. The twisting curves and beautiful scenery make for an ideal drive in our Porsches.

On arrival in Prescott, we will gather for dinner at the Gurley Street Grill, where we will enjoy selections from a menu designed just for our group. After dinner the plaza will be lit up in a festive celebration of the holiday season. You can stroll the plaza, check out the surrounding shops, and maybe have a hot drink or two. You may choose to return to the Valley that evening, or some of us will plan to spend the night in the area. For more details and to REGISTER, CLICK HERE

Future AZPCA Drives - Tour around the City

Valley View Dinner Drive Sunday, November 12, 2023 Take a leisurely in-town tour to some iconic locations in the Phoenix area where you can enjoy scenic views in perfect top-down weather. The route will take us from Scottsdale to the Arizona Biltmore area via Lincoln Drive, where the view of downtown Phoenix appears from the top of 24th Street. After a loop around Biltmore Estates we

will head up Camelback Mountain for views of the Valley from several perspectives.

Next, we will drive through Papago Park across town to South Mountain, where the spectacular panoramic views of the Valley from Dobbins Lookout are always impressive. Finally, a dazzling view will be seen from our dinner destination at Rustler’s Rooste, above the Arizona Grand Resort. The lights of the Valley will be gleaming as we enjoy a dinner of beef brisket and BBQ chicken with all the fixin’s. An alternative to our usual out-of-town drives, this one is at the start of the perfect six months of the year that remind us why we make the Valley of the Sun our home.

AZPCA Drive Review : Mt. Lemmon I

STORY BY

Michael Feldman

just recently joined the Porsche Club of America after a year of owning my first Boxster and weeks after purchasing my second. There was a group ride up Mount Lemmon in Tucson and I decided to go along with the group, it was a great experience and I was able to learn more about my recent purchase that I could only learn from more experienced owners and others with similar spec’d models. Everyone in the group was so welcoming and easy to talk with. The group even organized well with knowledge of a phone guided tour up the mountain with additional information about the area.

I can't wait to explore more of the area with the group and meet more of its members. Thank you for the experience. | 24 |

BOOK REVIEW: Sea of Red

BY Angela L Manente

Who knew we had a bonified author as an AZPCA member? Well, we do and his name is Jim (James) Bultema. Jim just released his first Award Winning Debut Novel, “Sea of Red”. Check it out here on Amazon or Jim will personally sign your book if you purchase it from his website here Overview: Sea of Red is an action-packed Military Thriller involving a war between China and the U.S. in their fight over Taiwan. With Chinese hypersonic cruise missiles thundering toward the aircraft carrier USS Reagan, the captain has only minutes to decide how to save his crew of 5,000 before they all end up at the bottom of the South China Sea. As the battle rages, under the sea, U.S. fast attack submarines silently maneuver against the PLA Navy while jet fighters battle for air superiority. On the ground, Marines fight for control of Chinese-held Woody Island. A Taiwanese tank squadron confronts a superior attacking force on Kinmen Island in a courageous attempt to halt Chinese forces. In the White House, the president strategizes with his National Security Council on overcoming China’s advantage in ballistic missiles and ships. His counterpart, the president of China, develops a daring plan to destroy America’s fleet of aircraft carriers. Sea of Red is a must-read, powerful new Techno-Thriller with warriors you won’t soon forget. My personal review: This book took off at a fast pace that didn’t stop. It kept you engaged throughout. The dynamics of war games and strategic planning were very interesting. It’s pretty scary to think these kinds of maneuvers are probably happening in real time. It was very helpful to have the glossary of acronyms and principal characters, for someone like me who isn’t military. All the characters came to life as the story progressed. Great book! Looking forward to reading Jim’s next book.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION CLASSIC MG CARS By Ross Alkureishi, published in 2020 by Mototbooks, Beverly, MA

The once contentious controversy over the origin of the post WWII sports car movement in the USA has faded but was never

fully resolved to the satisfaction of this reviewer. Indisputably though, the key beneficiary of the movement was the MG, whose models MG-C, MG-TD and TF were the most common of the early ‘Sports Cars’. For several years in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, MGs could legitimately claim to be “The Best-Selling Sports Car” and MG-As and -Bs, not to mention the MG-Midgets, sold by hundreds of thousands. This book details the complex story of where MG came from and the perhaps more complex story of how it snatched obscurity from prominence. Like Porsche, MG began as a vision of a single man, Cecil Kimber, under his guidance, Morris Garages, the sales and marketing arm of Morris Motors, began assembling custom versions of the cars and then re-engineering donor parts and even bespoke fabrication. Like Porsche, MG focused on sporty cars and was active in racing. Marketed well, the “Safety Fast” slogan was used as early as 1930. Unlike Porsche, MG was not focused on engineering, did not have continuity of leadership, and was never allowed corporate autonomy. In the early years MG seems to have been treated more as a potential competitor to its parent Morris Motors, than as n opportunity for corporate expansion. When Kimber became too successful, he was fired. CLASSIC MG CARS details the complexities of the multitudinous mix-and-match models produced, and the ever-changing corporate ownership of the MG marque, once even a subsidiary of BMW. It describes the sedans that were a surprisingly large part of MG production over the years. All in all, this book presents a picture of the MG marque as much bigger, and much less impressive, than its popular sports cars, the significant race cars, and the Land Speed Record holders of the ‘50s and ‘60s. It is almost as much a story of bureaucratic cumbersomeness as of automotive development. It is told from the viewpoint of an historian, not a management analyst. The management story might well be fascinating - an analysis of why and how, a significant marque in the decade before WWII, and the dominant Sports Car immediately after, became the unknown it is now. With large type and numerous pictures, the book is very readable. This reviewer found that the ever-changing conditions of corporate structure and design considerations, made captivating reading. There are numerous explanatory ‘side bars’ set off with a colored background. There are also some full page ‘special commentaries’ not significantly distinguished from regular text, which, while informative, tend to disrupt the continuity of the narrative. Detailed tables of technical specifications and performance data are interspersed in the narrative. They show that MG produced a tremendous array of models, mostly unknown in the USA. Under the dust cover, the matte black front and rear covers of the book itself have inset color pictures of MG Midgets with ‘happy owners’, bound to draw the eye of any car nut to any coffee table on which the book is placed. The end papers show early Morris production in front, and a “Trials” competitor in the rear. Very well illustrated, the pictures are more oriented toward marketing than to the engineering aspects of the cars. CLASSIC MG CARS is hard cover, with 240, 9-1/2 x 11-inch heavyweight pages. There is a very extensive index of six, three column pages, mostly tabulating the plethora of models, and with no entry for Porsche. It should be available for $55.00 from your favorite bookseller or from QuartoKnows.com

Fall Colors lead to Iced-up Roads STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER

Oh man, I really don’t like the fall. Yes, yes, I know all about how the leaves

change color. How the air gets crisp and brisk. There’s just one thing. You have to break out those thick, wooly, layers of clothing, the ones you packed away, at least six months ago, and tried to forget you had. It’s time to get resigned and prepared for what will come, and what may be. That’s my problem. Cold. Sleet. Snow. Winter. Here in Colorado, if you don’t ski or snowboard or skate, or drive a 4WD rally car with studded snow tires (do those tires even still exist?) what’s the point? I much prefer spring, and how it moves into summer. The warmth of the sun, the greening of the world, the renewal, the reawakening, the dry, sticky asphalt. What to do? If you’re like me, you hole up, with sensory alternatives like the computer, and books, and magazines, and music. You get through, with gossamer fantasies, stories like the one I just stumbled on, in the on-line version of The Robb Report. In it, they feature a photo shoot of Ralph Lauren’s fall clothing collection, with the models all posed in, on or around a vehicle from Ralph’s mind-numbing car collection. You’re not familiar with this stable of automotive purity? Think a light blanket of powdery fluff, falling from the sky, creating a monochrome veneer of white that encircles some of the greatest cars ever conceived and created. Like his 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe. One of three remaining, of four made. And the model. She’s sporting a $1990 wool jacket and $750 patent pumps. I’m transported into a multidimensional tone poem. Into the soundtrack of my mind come the words and melody to Joni Mitchell’s iconic The Urge for Going. “I awoke today and found the frost perched on the town. It hovered in a frozen sky, then it gobbled summer down. When the sun turns traitor cold. And all the trees are shivering in a naked row. I get the urge for going but I never seem to go.” Of course! She needs those studded snow tires! I’m sure nobody makes studded snows for Ralph’s 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari. And this one’s black on black. Which is treason, you say. And you may be right, unless you’re in the business of creating taste, like Ralph Lauren. The male model is styled in all-black as well. Again, the setting is a background that’s as pure as the driven snow.

I’m humming The Summer Wind. Sung by Frank, with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Ralph, Frank, you know you’re legendary if that’s all you need to say. “The autumn wind and the winter winds, they have come and gone. And still the days, those lonely days, they go on and on. And guess who sighs his lullabies through nights that never end. My fickle friend, the summer wind.” How about Ralph’s Blower Bentley? This one’s one of the four Birkin team cars that ran at Le Mans in 1929, and won. First through fourth. Driven by the legendary Bentley Boys. What do I hear? Autumn Leaves. And, no, not the actual leaves, the song. Sung by Eva Cassidy. “Since you went away the days grow long. And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song. But I miss you most of all my darling. When autumn leaves start to fall.” And then there’s Ralph’s 1959 Porsche RSK. One of 34. Of course, it’s resplendent in silver, perched on a white platform which sits on black flooring. The background is white as well. I smile. To myself. Because this car, and, in reality all of Ralph’s cars, are just so achingly perfect. And timeless. What’s that I hear? The words of Marty Balin, and the Jefferson Airplane. “The summer had inhaled and held its breath too long. The winter looked the same, as if it never had gone. And through an open window where no curtain hung. I saw you coming back to me.” Yes, this is transcendent beauty, in design, in art, in music, in performance. This is what gets me through. This is the way to cope with, and maybe conquer, the seasons of life. I just have to remember to check my anti-freeze.

Who is Danielle Badler?

A New York native, Danielle Badler embarked on a writing and communications consulting career in early 2007, following more than 30 years in corporate communications, the last ten years as the chief global communications officer for three Fortune 500 companies, General Instrument Corporation, Unisys Corporation and Western Union. TechTime with Scott M - Engine Oil in Your Porsche

Engine Oil in Your Porsche by scott mcilvain and greg mannion

T

he purpose of engine oil is to cool and lubricate the engine’s moving parts. The oil should be checked regularly and kept at the required level. modern engine oils contain a base oil with additives to keep the engine clean, neutralize the combustion soot and protect against corrosion. other additives reduce the amount of oil foaming, decrease the pour point and modify the viscosity of the engine oil at various temperatures to maintain proper lubrication. current engine oils meet stringent emission guidelines and improve mileage by keeping friction to a minimum.

oil and cause it to reduce its viscosity (become thinner) as the engine warms up. Engine design and oil cooling radiators (if used) will allow an engine oil to only reach a safe maximum operating temperature. This is why it is critical that the proper viscosity engine oil as specified in the owner’s manual is used. Here is a chart that shows the viscosity (thickness) of the oil at

All current engine oils must meet industry specific test requirements which include: rust inhibition, oxidation control, sludge and varnish control, wear control, bearing corrosion resistance, fuel economy, low temperature oil thickening and oxidation control. The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) is responsible for the creation of passenger car engine oil specifications. ACEA is the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association which sets European specifications. The American Petroleum Institute (API) licenses and monitors the quality of engine oils in the marketplace. Engine oils are generally identified by viscosity expressed in a SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) classification. SAE measures oil viscosity at 0°F and 212°F. A year-round engine oil will have a multi-grade designation such as “0W-40”. All motor oils meeting this designation will have the same viscosity curve over the engine operating temperature range and are interchangeable. Mobil 1 0W-40 is currently the factory fill oil for the Porsche 911. One should use the oil viscosity recommended in the owner’s manual for optimal performance. Please note that single grade oils are not recommended for use in current Porsche engines. Motor oil is thickest (most viscous) at lower temperatures. The lowest temperature the engine will face is at start up. The greatest wear on the engine occurs at startup when frictional forces are the greatest. Frictional forces then heat the engine

| 44 |

various operating temperatures of the engine. Once the engine is at operating temperature the viscosity of the engine oil remains constant. This is due to the viscosity modifier additive content of the engine oil. Viscosity modifiers are generally olefin copolymers. This is a rubber-like substance that is used in very low quantities. This substance functions like a coiled spring in the sense that the molecule is small at colder temperatures and larger at higher temperatures. The viscosity modifier allows the engine oil to flow at colder temperatures and to not get too thin at higher temperatures. The question of “Should I use a synthetic oil in my engine?” is frequently asked. The chances are that if you have a vehicle produced within the last ten years and you are using a multi-grade engine oil, you are already using a synthetic oil. Synthetic merely refers to something

TechTime with Scott M - Engine Oil in Your Porsche that does not naturally occur. A regular base oil is simply distilled from crude oil and is graded by viscosity. A synthetic base oil can also be derived from crude oil but then has an additional refining process that makes it into a product with very specific properties which could not occur naturally. These products are referred to as Group III base oils. Other products used as synthetic base oils are poly alpha olefins (PAO) and diester fluids. Synthetic based engine oils will outperform traditional base oils by reducing friction and staying “in grade” for a longer period of time.

oil company and then an independent oil blender. Most of his career has been marketing performance additives for fuels and various industrial lubricants including automotive and diesel engine oils. If you have any questions about oil or any technical question about your Porsche or if you would like to co-author an article please email scott@mcilvainmotors.com

The question of “Should I routinely test my engine oil?” is often asked. The answer is if one changes the oil as recommended by the manufacturer, then no. Generally the cost of the engine oil monitoring service quickly exceeds the cost of a new oil change. The exception to this would be if one is experiencing engine wear or if one is looking to trouble shoot a specific engine wear issue ,then the cost may be justified as a problem solving tool. Aftermarket engine oil additives can void the Porsche warranty. A good quality name brand engine oil is manufactured to meet the auto manufacturer’s requirements. Additional chemical treatment is not necessary. The engine oils marketed for high mileage engines (over 75,000 miles) contain additional additives to compensate for possible engine wear due to high mileage. The current US engine oil designations are SN/GF-5. Additional ACEA and Porsche designations may also be listed. What does the future of engine oils look like? Engine oils are constantly being improved upon to help reduce emissions and increase mileage. Europe tends to focus on emission reduction while the USA tends to focus on mileage improvement. The next industry wide change for engine oil is scheduled to occur after January 1, 2017. These oils will have an SAE designation of “0W-16”. Whereas many years ago engine oil wear reduction was primarily controlled by viscosity, that is no longer the case. Modern engine oils control wear reduction by use of specific chemical additives, thus allowing the reduction in viscosity which leads to a reduction in friction, which provides improved mileage. Engine oils will become less viscous (thinner) with improved additive technology. This article dealt with engine oils for Porsche gasoline engines. Diesel engine oil requirements are fundamentally the same but there is a difference in viscosity requirements and product labeling. Diesel engines need to use the designated oil as specified in the owner’s manual. Greg Mannion has spent his professional career in the petrochemical industry. Early in his career he worked for a major

AZPCA Drive Review : Rancho de los Caballeros STORY BY

Peo Hansson Wickenburg Drive Oct 15, 2023

On a perfect Arizona morning, a fleet of predominantly flat sixes from Stuttgart and their caretakers from all kinds of places,

gathered in a Scottsdale parking lot, full of anticipation. This morning, the drive from Coffee Plantation to Rancho de los Caballeros in Wickenburg, an old AZPCA tradition, was on the schedule. An exemplary driver’s meeting was held by Jim and Carole Never pass the lead - it has happened once and the perpetrator, we were told, is no longer with us (we were looking at each other and silently wondered what that really meant) and a 15-minute break means 900 seconds, schnell, schnell, back to the cars and start your engines preferably vintage running start style, still possible with any gasoline powered Porsche, and off we were. After finally leaving the many Scottsdale traffic lights behind us, we took the windier New River roads north before hitting AZ-74 and US-60, maintaining a zügig pace. Approaching Wickenburg, we were pleasantly surprised by a smooth road surface. Those participating in drives earlier this year probably remember the pot hole slalom contest in that section. Rancho de los Caballeros (the Gentlemen on Horseback) was opened in 1948 by the Gant family, who ran it for over 70 years. It features Arizona’s first non-rectangular pool and even had an airstrip to accommodate guests arriving by private plane. Given that level of early progress it was surprising to find out that it took them until 1987 to install phones. Today it is a beautiful historic resort with a golf course, horseback riding, archery, shooting ranges, spa, and excellent dining (the author will definitely return). We got a great taste of what the kitchen is capable of in the rustic historic dining area, Perfectly cooked salmon, chicken, roast, the best soup, salads, desserts, and much more. The group enjoyed lively conversation while probably eating a bit more than planned since it was so good, and I think we all got to know even more of the very nice members of AZPCA. Another very enjoyable event, many thanks to the organizers, we’ll be back!

Stuttgart Market Letter Written by David K. Whitlock

Overall, the Porsche market rebounded from a poor August to the levels we saw in July with a 71% sell-through rate, producing $31,018,453 off 595 vehicles offered for sale. However, some markets did better than others, as the 992 market continued to soften.

Of the five 992 GT3s to cross the block, three found homes, and not a single unit was bid over $300,000, including a lone GT3 Touring 6-speed. Winged cars struggled as we saw the lowest bid on record of $218,000 for a 2022 GT3 6-Speed finished in Paint to Sample Linden Green with a host of CXX options, and only 1,000 miles failed to sell. On the non-GT front, we saw a welloptioned 2022 91 Carrera S Coupe with a 7-speed and sticker of $167,000 sell for $151,000, showing that 911s are starting to trade below MSRP more regularly. Another market that has continued to soften this month is the Boxster Spyder market, with the biggest surprise being a 900-mile 2022 718 Boxster Spyder that sold for $115,000, making it the lowest sub-1,000-mile Spyder we’ve seen to date. Following that trend, we saw another sub-1k 718 Spyder fail to sell at a high bid of $114,500. 964 Carrera RS also had a rough go of it, with a rare Rubystone N/GT example failing to sell at a high bid of $282,000. Earlier this year, we saw a five-year high for a Rubystone N/GT at $401,000, so to see this example fall so short was rather disappointing. Adding to the disappointment was another 964 Carrera RS that failed to sell at a high bid of only $153,000. These no sales were more affected by the quality of the cars offered than an overall market decline, as one had paintwork and no records, and the other had an accident history and was located in Germany. But it wasn’t all doom and gloom as several cars reached twelve-month and five-year highs. At $127,000, we had a Guards Red 1990 911 Carrera 2 Targa 5-speed achieve a twelve-month high due to its remarkable condition and only 16,963 miles. We also had another superb Targa reach a five-year high with a 1970 911E Targa with all original paint, original interior, matching numbers, and fully documented mileage hit $153,000. The two most surprising sales of the month came from models we don’t typically see on these pages. The first was a 1979 928 5-speed refinished in Minerva Blue Metallic over Black leather with Pasha-style seat inserts. The stunning color combination and a recent refurbishment by a marque expert produced a $100,000 sale, a far cry from the $30,000 928s we see on our typical auction day. The other was a 1974 914 2.0 in Signal Orange over Brown equipped with the Appearance Group Package, 15” Fuchs alloy wheels, and a Stoddard muffler. This example finished in an interesting color combination and in original condition, brought a new twelve-month high of $64,000. While not a terrible month, many markets were still far from their Spring numbers. I believe we’ll see the new cars continue to soften through the Fall and into next year while some of our classic models, like the 356 and 993, start to even out and most likely pop back up come Spring. Only time will tell. Happy bidding.

AZPCA Drive Review : Four Peaks Off Road Arizona Region Four Peaks Off Road Tour Sunday October 8, 2023 By: Rich Andrade

Sunday October 8, 2023 was our AZ Region’s second off-road drive. Past President Steve Sapareto was our lead over the Four Peaks mountain range.

The Four Peaks Wilderness Area is north east of Phoenix After we exited state HWY 87, some group members lowered the pressure in their tires to make the ride across the washboard and rocky trail a bit smoother.

This was our driving route, turning east off Arizona HWY 87 onto Four Peaks Road and taking forest route 143. El Oso Road is the descent portion of the drive. The trail drive ended at HWY 188 in the Tonto Basin.

AZPCA Drive Review : Four Peaks Off Road Porsches are well known for their performance on the track, twisty highways and Autobahn. With the Cayenne and Macan, Porsches provide sure- footed enjoyment off the paved roads too.

When we started the trip there was a storm in the distance. The weather later cleared.

AZPCA Drive Review : Four Peaks Off Road

It was a dusty drive. It is a windy road with many nice vistas, but the driver had best be looking ahead as there are some large rocks that could do damage to the undercarriage.

Group leader Steve Sapareto posed next to his white Porsche Cayenne. There were a mix of Porsche Cayennes and a Macan along with other non-Porsche off road vehicles.

First Generation Cayenne instrument low-range indication The first generation Cayenne, model years 2003 – 2010, has a 2.7 : 1 ratio low range transfer case and center differential lock. I engaged this feature in my 2009 Cayenne for the last 60% of the drive where it was slow driving with steep climbs and descents. In many places we were limited to 10 mph by the terrain.

AZPCA Drive Review : Four Peaks Off Road

Our group of eleven vehicles posed for a group photo on the way down the mountain. Dan Web photography contributed this photo.

Sporty but dusty Porsches. Following our descent from Four Peaks, we added pressure back into our tires for the drive home. We met at the Butcher Hook restaurant to wind down and to recharge our biological systems. Everyone thanked Steve for arranging the drive and asked “when is the next one?” … I certainly can’t wait! I’ve included a few additional views of Four Peaks for our Going Places readers that aren’t available from ground level. I’ve flown by the peaks several times as a passenger in a Mooney aircraft and was treated to these views.

AZPCA Social Event - FLIGHT 45...that’s a wrap Another AZPCA Concours d’Elegance has come and gone and by all accounts it was another very successful one. The Friday night dinner attendance was extremely low; however, everyone that made it out were treated to a lovely buffet dinner and great conversations. It was interesting to see all the people who stayed over at the Marriott the night before busily preparing their car and then covering them up for the evening, great dedication for sure. Even though overall participation was low, it was a heated competition with a 3-way tie in Street Modern CM-3 for first place, and a 2-way tie in Detail & Shine D&S-4 for first place. The car entered in the Full Concours with the minimum deductions/highest score was David Fisher with his Cayman GT4 RS. Excellent work by all! A huge thanks goes out to Abby E and Andy C for organizing an amazing event and to all the volunteers who helped make everything run smoothly. Over 40 volunteers showed up to make this event run as smoothly as possible. The first volunteers arrived at Porsche Chandler at 6 am to set up the tents, signs, tables and registration packets in preparation for the onslaught of both participants as well as Porsche admirers. Another huge shout out to Richard and Lisa Cvijanovich and their amazing staff at Porsche Chandler who helped make Flight 45 such a well-received event. Richard and Lisa opened up their dealership to us and made everyone feel extremely welcome, and Chef Chris ensured we were all very well fed. Thanks. A big thanks to Betsy, Rich, Audre, Maria, DeLynn and Jennifer for helping out at the AZPCA Goodie stall as well as the Registration/New Members table. Greatly appreciated. Last but definitely not least thanks to all the members who took such great pride in bringing their prized automobiles to the event and entering them in the Concours, no matter what category you entered your Porsche in you showed immense pride in what you drive. Congrats! Stay safe this fall and I look forward to seeing you all at Flight 46.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA! Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies. For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out. Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set. While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way. How is a typical HPDE day structured? A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps. The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced. | 60 |

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending. What do you need to bring? Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that) We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event. Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet. There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs. Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

AZPCA HPDE - Look who just woke up from Hibernation STORY & PHOTOS BY

Dan Bouet Goodbye Summer- Kicking off the Track Season at Arizona Motorsports Park

On October 14, adrenaline junkies and Porsche enthusiasts gathered at Arizona Motorsports Park for a day of high-speed action and precision driving. It marked the commencement of AZPCA's HighPerformance Driver Education (HPDE) season and delivered a day filled with high-speed action and precision driving that left us all eager for the upcoming track events. From high-horsepower Porsches tearing down the track to the camaraderie among fellow drivers, the AZPCA HPDE at Arizona Motorsports Park was a great way to play with your Porsche!

Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP), located in Litchfield Park, Arizona, is our club’s local track venue. The 2.26-mile circuit features technical corners, long straights, and quick turns, and creates the perfect playground for refining driving skills and exploring the capabilities of our Porsche machines. The track has a straightforward and level design, which allows for a focus on precision and technical driving skills, rather than dealing with significant elevation shifts. This makes it a prime venue for HPDE events, as the track's flat nature and plenty of runoff provides a consistent, predictable, and safe driving experience. From the moment participants arrived at the track, volunteers were there to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience. Registration and administrative support made sure check-ins were efficient and questions were answered. The safety tech inspection team examined each car, confirming that they met safety and performance standards, offering peace of mind to all drivers. The grid marshals managed the orderly staging of cars, enhancing the efficiency of each driving session, and the hospitality support ensured that everyone felt welcomed and well taken care of throughout the day, including a catered lunch. A motorsports photographer was out on track, capturing the excitement in various corners and vantage points, providing an opportunity for a digital keepsake of the event. The event showcased an impressive lineup of Porsche models, spanning generations from early water cooled 911 and Boxsters to the current generation vehicles. There were even some surprises, with an aircooled 911 and a GT2RS making appearances. As typical, there were some BMWs and Corvettes to play around with, perfect for setting up a “rival” driver to battle. Porsche owners from across our region and Southern Arizona region brought their cars, all well prepared for a day of high-performance driving. The day was not just about speeding around the track though; it's about learning, improving, and perfecting driving skills. The club had instructors assigned to all beginner drivers, teaching them the art of apexing, braking, and acceleration, ultimately helping them extract the best performance from their cars with consideration to their driving abilities. Classroom instruction, led by our CDI John Dowling, supplemented what they were doing out on track. Additionally, some intermediate students requested instruction to further improve their skill set, which the club encourages and accommodates whenever possible. We also kicked off PCA National's new "Track Experience" program with a bang, offering a taste of the track to prospective drivers by having them ride shotgun with an instructor for a 20-minute driving session. Beyond the track action, the event was a great opportunity for club members and enthusiasts to connect and share their passion. Whether it was trading stories, sharing tips, or lending a hand with car setups, there was a tangible sense of community. And even though we didn't have official timed laps (Time Trials) at this event, the desire to set a new personal best or challenge a friendly "rival" was always in the air. These drivers and volunteers, driven by their love for Porsche and the spirit of community, made the PCA HPDE at Arizona Motorsports Park a resounding success. While the drivers pushed their cars to the limit on the track, the volunteers orchestrated the event's flawless execution. Their collective efforts underscore | 62 |

AZPCA HPDE - Look who just woke up from Hibernation the strength of the Porsche community, where passion and dedication unite to create memorable experiences. Our HPDE at Arizona Motorsports Park was more than just a day of high-performance driving; it was a testament to the power of community and the shared love for Porsche, where everyone came together to celebrate the thrill of the open track and driving fast. As the day drew to a close, participants left the track with a renewed sense of accomplishment and confidence in AZPCA's dedication to high-performance driving education. With professional instruction and a diverse lineup of Porsches, this event encapsulated the essence of AZPCA’s dedication to driving excellence and social engagement. As participants packed up their cars and said their goodbyes, the event left a lasting impression, proving once again that the Porsche experience extends far beyond the vehicles themselves – “it's not just the cars, it’s the people”. By the time this article goes live, we’ll be heading to Inde Motorsports Ranch on Nov 4-5 for a weekend HPDE and Time Trials event. If you’re not already signed up, maybe you can catch us last minute there, otherwise, the following HPDE and Time Trials will be at Podium Club in Casa Grande, AZ on December 2. Hope to see you soon at a track day!

Auto-X 2023/24 They’re back and raring to GO PROVIDED BY RICK ALTHOUSE & KIM KEMPER

AZPCA REGION 2023-2024 AUTOCROSS SEASON EVENT #1 The 2023-2024 AZPCA Region Autocross Season Event, the first event of the season, was held on Saturday, Oct 7, 2023, at Arizona Motorsport Park (AMP) in Litchfield Park. The weather was AZPCA Region perfect, and 41 drivers had a fun-packed time negotiating a well-designed course to start the season on a good note. Of course, there were the usual slaloms and gates. However, this course had several medium speed sweepers that rewarded patience to seek the elusive top time of day. Speaking of podium finishes, Ealing J, driving a 2012 911 completed a lap in 50.763 seconds to take first. Nipping on his heels was Eric S, also in a 2006 911, at a 50.822 and completing the podium was Eric T at a 51.702 in a 2014 Cayman S. The next event will be the second event of the 2023-2024 AZPCA Region Autocross Season on: Saturday, Nov 11, 2023, at AMP. Try to stay cool and enjoy your AZPCA Region fall!
