y now you should have voted for the new officers for our Region. These volunteers are selfless in offering their time and effort, with no compensation, to keep our Region active and vibrant. Volunteering is a great way to meet and work with our members and I know that I get a great deal of satisfaction from my efforts. Please consider helping in any way you can. At the Zone 8 President’s monthly meetings, I learn about what other regions are doing and we are always one of the more active regions which makes me proud. The newly elected board members will be announced at the November monthly meeting. Please join us to welcome them. This meeting is usually held at Porsche North Scottsdale; however, we are still restricted due to the Coronavirus, so the meetings will continue to be online. Our Region is doing well. We are in good financial shape despite the period of low activity and we continue to add new members every month. We have 1932 members in our region and 1226 are primary members with the rest being affiliates. We have started holding new events, both tours and driving events and they are going well. The chairs have done a great job in implementing appropriate guidelines to keep our members safe and I am very proud of their efforts. The club has purchased two way radios for communication between instructors and students, so that we can conduct lead follow training to keep everyone safe yet still provide our great instructors with the ability to teach. We try to have extra masks and sanitizer at these events, in case you forget, but you should bring your own. You can join our events and feel confident we will keep you safe, unless you are already sick and, if so, please stay home and get better. I am hoping that once vaccines are available, we will be able to stop these restrictions and go back to a more normal life where we can resume our social events. We are continuing our monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month by teleconference. To join, sign up through Motorsportreg.com. Its free and there is no limit on numbers who can join. Once you have registered, you will receive a link with a password to the meeting. Please join us! ‘Nuff said. Drive safely!

am saddened to say, another member has passed away. Paul Graves was a long time member of AZPCA. Jill and Paul could always be seen at Porsche parties. He served the club under Steve, our current President, on the Board of Directors, back in 2008. Many Porsches and Pancakes, Sunday Drives and Driver Education events. Sending condolences and prayers to Jill and his family. Some of our club activities are getting scheduled following Covid-19 recommended distancing and group restrictions. We had a nice crowd sign up to take the drive to Prescott on October 17th. Everyone was ready for the “Green Flag.” There is also a weekend drive to the Petrified Forest this month. Unfortunately, we will not be planning a holiday party this year. I’ve decided to participate in Holiday Stockings for Heroes program this year to get in the holiday spirit.. Here is the link if you are interested, in learning more about the program. https://soldiersangels.org/holiday-stockings-for-heroes/getting-started-holiday-stockings-for-heroes/

This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Chris Henley for “Pandemic Porsche Projects.” He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. Make sure to read his story. These projects didn’t look too difficult! Keep an eye on our club website calendar for up to the minute event information. Our membership monthly meetings are still being held on-line and you need to sign up to get the meeting login information. Hope to see you at an upcoming event. In the meantime, stay safe!

7. Next upgrade?

2. What Porsche(s) do you have?

8. Have you personalized your car?

3. Where are you from?

9. Favorite memory with a car?

We just recently joined PCA October 2020.

Originally from Boston, spent most of my life in New Jersey and moved to Arizona in October 2018.

4. Family?

My wife, Debra, daughter, Laura, in San Diego and daughter, Leanna, in NYC.

5. Work background or trade?

Owned a Manufacturers Representative Company for 3 years, selling process control instrumentation to the chemical, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor industries. Sold the business 4 years ago and now working for the company, which acquired us. Managing our Semiconductor Sales Team in the Desert Mountain region in providing flow and pressure control instruments.

The chalk paint, black/chalk interior, 20” Carrera S Wheels, Sport Chrono.

I haven’t considered an upgrade as yet.

Not yet.

I had a 1987 911 Targa, which I would take my older daughter for drives when she was a toddler. She cried, when I sold it for a 1995 993. I am crying now when I see what the 1987’s and the 1995’s are worth today.

10. Why did you buy your Porsche?

I previously had a 2016 Cayman and loved the balance and handling. Wanted to upgrade to the more refined 718.

11. High school nickname? Mags.

12. Top 3 cars you would own? 356, 718 Cayman GT4, 992.

In Memory of Cynthia Giacchetti by Jan Mackulak, Social Media Chair

J

er and I first met Cynthia and Michael 20 years ago, at an AZPCA Monthly Meeting. I had pulled her name out of the hat from all the people who had completed a Membership Survey questionnaire. They won a dinner for two to Houston’s Restaurant in Scottsdale. They asked us to join them at Houston’s and that was the beginning of our friendship. She was my Flight 26 Registration Chair. She co-chaired the Social Committee with me for 5 years. We organized holiday parties, many Valentine date nights, and the 50th Anniversary Gala party. She championed ladies drives and encouraged ladies to do autocross and driver education events.

Cyn was one of the strongest supporters of all the children’s’ charities that the Club supported with events and gift drives during the holidays. We did so many Sunday drives, Porsches and Pancakes, Annual Diamondbacks baseball games, monthly meetings, Alpine weekend trips, weekend trips to Southern California and Vegas Fun Runs with them.

Willcox wine tasting. Date Night!

Dbacks baseball game.

We had a blast giving the boys hell at two DEs - one at INDE and one at AMP. She was the epitome of a Porsche Club Enthusiast and received the Aman Award as AZPCA Enthusiast of the Year, 2006. Her one and only Porsche, named Ruby, was her baby. She was the life of the party everyone knew her and she made it her goal to talk and know everyone. But she was more than just a friend in the Porsche Club. She was my partner-in-crime and the friend you could count on when you needed a shoulder to lean on, a lunch buddy to discuss a new cell phone purchase with, an always-ready Indy 500 and Super Bowl Party person, a mutual “extra” talent for TV commercials, and a texting buddy to share photos and ideas about clothing, shoes and accessories.

At DE with her Boxster, “Ruby.”

Vegas Baby!

Porsches and Pancakes at The Thumb.

She proudly talked about her children and grandchildren, along with their accomplishments. She loved to travel and talking about her Armenian heritage. “Spock”, was her furry baby boy and we shared a strong mutual love of our pups over the years. Michael was the love of her life and she doted on “her man.” She loved to cook and enjoy a glass or two of wine with friends, over at their house. She never forgot to call and sing happy birthday to you or remember an anniversary with a special gift. Her annual Valentines’ Date Night was one of the highlights of the AZPCA calendar. She wanted one night for everyone to dress up special in red for our loved one. I am honored to continue the tradition of the Valentines’ Date Night in Memory of Cynthia Giacchetti to honor this truly special friend to all. Porsche Club members and girlfriends don’t get much better than this. All of lives were enriched by knowing Cynthia. I loved this girl and we will miss her.

In Memory of Cynthia Giacchetti (Continued from page 15)

Heartfelt condolences posted on our Facebook page by AZPCA members: “We’re very sorry that Cyn won’t be with us at Treffen. She would have loved to be involved in this. I plan to propose we title the traditional February event as the “Valentines’ Date Night in memory of Cynthia Giacchetti.” “I considered Cynthia a great friend and will always remember when she and I bottled the AZPCA wine together.” “So sad to hear this news. Cynthia has always been the life of the party. What a devastating loss.” “We will always remember her smiling face and her excitement at the Date Nights she organized.” “A truly sad loss of an incredible positive spirit in the club, condolences to her family.” “She was a special person to so many of us. Glad we have so many great memories of our time together. She will always be in our hearts.” “Oh my goodness.... I’m just heartbroken. Cyn was truly one-of-a-kind, an incredible lady and a dear friend. My love to Michael. Love you, Cynthia!!” “Wow! I'm shocked. So sorry to hear of her passing. she was always so full of energy and loved life.”

REGION ANNOUNCEMENTS AZPCA Weekend Drive to Petrified Forest, Painted Desert & Meteor Crater Staying at Historic La Posada Hotel

Join Friends - Drive Porsches - Explore Natural Wonders Friday through Sunday, November 13-14-15 We will meet Friday in Fountain Hills and head north on the Beeline Highway to Pine for lunch. From there we will continue to Winslow where we will stay at La Posada, a hotel that is an oasis in the desert. La Posada was designed by southwest architect Mary Colter and built in 1929 by the Santa Fe Railroad. It was operated by the Fred Harvey company and served by the famous “Harvey Girls. It has been restored over the last 20 years and has a really unique character. The highly acclaimed Turquoise Room offers a very Arizona menu featuring some retro Fred Harvey dishes, as well as Southwestern Cuisine. On Saturday, we will drive east on I-40 to the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert, together in one National Park, for the day to explore. The lower section has the petrified wood and unique colored sand sculpted terrain with various overlooks and short trails. The Painted Desert features various viewpoints with striking vistas of the unique landscape. You will want to explore the old Painted Desert Inn and wonder what it must have been like to have stayed there years ago. Dinner Saturday is on your own, as folks are likely to return at varying times.

Sunday after breakfast we will head toward Flagstaff to Meteor Crater, a 50,000-year-old meteorite impact crater over a mile wide and 500 feet deep. Besides its geologic interest, Meteor Crater was used by NASA to train astronauts during the Apollo Program.

Directors at Large Candidates Jennifer Bartling

Friends, I am pleased to announce my candidacy as a 2021-2022 AZPCA Director at Large. I have served as Social Event Chair for AZPCA since January 2019. During this time I’ve hosted such events as New Members Day, a Dolly Steamboat cruise, Flight 42 social events, and our 60th Anniversary Gala which was held last November at the Phoenix Art Museum. I am currently serving on the Treffen 2021 planning committee, and regularly participate in monthly meetings and driving events. I have consistently attended the Board of Directors meetings in my tenure as Social Chair to assist the Board and provide updates on our club events. I am originally from Warrenton, Oregon (near Astoria), and after graduating from college I relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where I lived for 12 years. I moved to Chandler in September 2011 and joined the PCA with my significant other, Ryan, when I purchased my Macan S in February 2018. In my professional career, I had worked for 16 years for a large healthcare information technology company, most recently as a Program Manager. I am currently pursuing project management certification while I search for my next career opportunity. In my free time, I enjoy hosting gatherings with friends, attending concerts, watching professional hockey, grilling, reading, and crochet. I live in Chandler with Ryan and our two pugs. I’d be honored to further contribute to the success of our club as a member of the Board of Directors and would sincerely appreciate your vote.

Jim Bultema Being a newer member of AZPCA, I am excited to offer my passion, my enthusiasm, and fresh ideas to our great region. If elected as a new Director at Large you will be gaining a friend and a person who strongly believes in a work ethic of getting things done. I have never been one to stand on the sidelines. All my life I have been a volunteer and active on boards to help in the direction of that particular club. Beginning with youth softball as a coach, umpire, and board member, to other car clubs, and to my local Rotary club as the president and then assistant governor. To the Los Angeles Police Department’s Historical Society and museum serving as a reliable board member. And finally, as a board member and vice president of the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library. I strongly believe in not only being active, but in staying involved while teaming up with others to make the club/ organization the best it can be, and something that all members can be proud of. Within just a few months of joining AZPCA, I volunteered to fill the position as the Meeting Chairman to set up each monthly meeting in conjunction with our President, Steve Sapareto —what better way to get to know each of you. I have also written articles for Going Places. I like to think of myself as a worker bee, getting the job done through hard work with a splattering of new ideas thrown in. My mantra is, if you want something done, get down in the trenches and get it done. Along with my wife Carole, we have attended most activities of this remarkably busy club and have had so much fun in seeing new places (and Porsches) and meeting new friends. With your support and vote, I can promise you I will fulfill my duties as a Director at Large to the best of my ability. I will always have my nose to the ground seeking out suggestions and comments concerning our club. I will be there for you. Thank you. Jim Bultema

Richard Wyatt

I am currently retired and have the time to provide whatever tasks the board may designate for me to handle. I have been married for 53 years and have 2 grown children and 3 grandchildren. I am a former General Sales Manager of a Porsche/Audi Franchise in Oregon and have a long-standing love of the franchise. I joined the Club in February of 2017 and have been the Membership Chairperson for the club since April of 2018. I also currently assist Rook Younger in setting up MotorsportReg.com registrations for Club events.

| 24 |

I appreciate your consideration for this position. Thank you.

It’s Time Again to Vote! We would like to send a special thank you to all the candidates for their desire to serve our club and its members. Pandemic Porsche Projects by Chris Henley

T

his past summer, I’m happy to say that I was able to complete several projects on my Porsche, while we all were waiting for the “Green Flag.” I bought my 2000 Boxster S in May of 2018, as a weekend convertible that I could enjoy top-down driving during our beautiful fall, winter and spring seasons here in Arizona. As Porsche owners, we understand this and live for opportunities when we can get out and enjoy our cars, which is why it was so difficult when the pandemic changed our world. We lost opportunities to celebrate special occasions, travel, vacation and gather with friends and loved ones and don’t forget, to spend more time with our cars, PCA members and events. This summer, I found myself with extra time on my hands during the pandemic and decided to accomplish some short DIY projects on the Porsche, that could be accomplished on multiple Saturday mornings before the mid day summer heat. My garage faces west, which keeps me in the shade all morning, which helps. However, an air conditioned garage would be ideal. Owning a 20-year old car, even in good shape, will have its share of repairs that need to be done in addition to regular maintenance. So with the extra time on my hands I planned each project by researching how to do it, inspecting my car, ordering the necessary parts (if needed) and executing the project. With most of my Saturday’s wide open, I made a schedule to complete the following stand alone projects: 1) oil & filter change, 2) cleaning out front radiators, 3) new brake pads/sensors and bleeding the brake system, and 4) rear sway bar bushings and links.

Cleaning out the front radiators.

Oil and filter changes might not sound like a big deal, but to someone that has never performed one, I wanted to get it right the first time and have a good experience. Yep, that’s correct - up until this year I have never performed my own oil change on any of my vehicles and I’m happy to say I was successful and plan to continue my own oil changes on my Porsche. My DIY tip is to purchase a good set of ramps that are wide enough to accommodate the rear tires. My next Saturday project did not require any new parts - totally free! I removed the front bumper and air cowlings to expose years of debris that had collected around my front radiators and condensers, threatening the performance of my cooling system. Many of you know that the 1st and 2nd generation Boxsters and water cooled 911’s have open front vents in the bumpers just a few inches above our roads and freeways, which suck in all kinds of debris that can be picked up while driving. Quite the collection of debris..

| 26 |

When looking through the front bumper I was able to see some leaves or other debris collecting in the front corners. However, only when the bumper is removed with the air cowlings off is when you can fully expose and clean them completely. I found leaves, cigarette butts, styrofoam packing peanuts, pebbles, plastic wrappers and a newspaper clipping (see photos). It felt good knowing I had cleaned this out and will help improve the cooling efficiency of my Porsche. This project requires the removal of some plastic push pins in the front wheel wells so my tip is to have some push-pin removal pliers, which is extremely helpful.

My dashboard indicator for brake pad sensors had recently come on after our March drive to Sedona, so I knew a brake project was in my future. I wasn’t sure if my rotors/disks needed replacing so I bought a micrometer to measure their thickness and they were indeed within spec and did not need replacing at this time. So new pads and sensors were ordered for the front and rear brakes. I wasn’t positive of the condition of the wear sensors so I went ahead and replaced all four as they are not expensive. Also, I wanted to bleed the brakes as part of this project so, brake fluid and a bleeder kit were also ordered which allowed me to bleed the brakes without a second person’s assistance. The brake pads and sensors were replaced without any issues and after bleeding the brakes the pedal is very firm with great stopping assurance. Job done! My DIY tip on this project is to have the entire car on the jack stands and each wheel removed for plenty of working access.

Brake pad project.

Leave the entire car on the jack stands.

Pandemic Porsche Projects (Continued from page 27) My last summer project was to track down and fix a clunk or knocking noise that was coming from the rear suspension while driving over bumps and undulations on the roads. It’s audible only during slower speeds between 15 - 35 mph. With the rear wheel off, I can shake the sway bar which produces a small audible noise. After some research and inspection my issue appears to be part of the rear sway bar so I ordered some replacement bushings as well as drop links. Replacing the bushings and drop links were very easy and once installed I grabbed the sway bar for the shake test and it passed - no more noise. I also gave it a short test drive around the neighborhood, which seemed good. The real test will be a longer drive when the engine and exhaust are warm and see if that passes the test. I should have a final verdict after Takin’ the Twisties to Prescott in October. The DIY tip for this project is to elevate both the left and right rear equally so the sway bar is straight and level and not torqued. These projects were enjoyable for me because it not only helped to pass some time for the summer weekends, but it helped me know and understand my Porsche better than when I started. Happy motoring!

Ready for the open road!

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region

Car Electrical and Electronic Systems Car Electrical and Electronic Systems, by Julian Edgar, published November 2018 by Veloce Publishing, Poundbury, England, a part of their WorkshopPRO series,

T

he author has been trained as an educator and as a journalist and it shows in the readability of his automotive writings, of which there are many. A nice touch is chapter number and name in the upper right corner of each page. There is a complete index and four pages of ads for other interesting books in the series. This book is thorough and complete, but it is neither Porsche specific, nor as ‘user friendly’ as Wayne Dempsey’s workshop books. As implied by the name of the series of which it is a part – WorkshopPRO – it is not directed at the neophyte mechanic. It does however, begin with an excellent presentation on the very basic concepts of electricity – volts, ohms and amps and their relationships in circuits. Switches and relays are also presented in a very basic but comprehensive manner with examples of specific automotive applications. But this book has merit as more than just it’s ‘shop manual’ aspects. Voltage sensors and diagnostic equipment are described so that the dedicated amateur can learn to perform fairly major electrical and electronic maintenance on Porsches. It might require more dedication than most Porsche owners are willing to expend, but the Porsche ‘hobbyist’ will be well served. However, be advised that ownership of this book will motivate acquisition of electrical/electronic tools well beyond the multi-meter level. The electronic ‘hobbyist’ might even like building the several special circuits described to perform custom functions in a car. Car Electrical and Electronic Systems has eleven chapters covering topics from Car Electricity, then Switches and Relays through Engine Management to Fault-Finding Advanced Car Systems, the latter dealing with trouble shooting OBDII Trouble Codes. There are separate chapters on older ‘electric’ cars and on modern ‘electronic’ cars with digital systems. The basic chapter provides very specific instructions for checking battery, alternator and starter function, trouble| 32 |

shooting breaker-point based conventional ignition systems, as well as testing circuits generally. The Oscilloscopes chapter introduces adapters allowing laptop computers to display traditional oscilloscope information and gives specific examples of ‘scope use on both analog and digital automotive systems, including the Bosch L-Jetronic and Motronic systems used on older Porsches. There is also a detailed discussion of an extensive Bosch diagram of how the MEMotronic is designed, followed by explanation of the sensors on which it relies and how to test them. Almost makes it seem like the combustion chamber is the least significant part of an engine! There are lots of diagrams and outstanding graphics, some in color, many courtesy of Bosch. Almost four pages are devoted to explaining the CAN bus, which Porsche now uses. It even deals with details like how to release various types of multi-pin electrical connectors. The Engine Management chapter in particular, will be of great interest to the technically inclined owner who wants to understand how his Porsche engine works, even if he does not intend to do any maintenance personally. Few owners of DFI Porsches know that throttle valve position is partially controlled by brake booster vacuum level, and that throttle pedal position sometimes controls fuel flow, independent of air flow. It’s all in Chapter 8 of this book. Though couched in diesel terms, there is an excellent explanation of the factors affecting DFI (direct fuel injection) systems and their exhaust emissions. All in all, a good book for the technically inclined owner of a modern 21st century car as well as for the dedicated Porsche hobbyist mechanic. Car Electrical and Electronic Systems is soft bound, with 168, 8-1/4 x 9-3/4 inch matte pages. It is very well illustrated with many photos and elaborate graphics. This book is available from Amazon Books at a bargain price of (search on Julian Edgar).
