PRESIDENT’S CORNER Ma r k

B a ker

Hello All: alling All Cars !! – Flight 43 is coming up soon and if you want to show your car, view some cars, or join us for the dinners on Friday or Saturday, register soon. There is a dinner on Friday, November 5th, the Concours on Saturday, November 6th starting at 1 p.m., and the Saturday night awards dinner. Come out and join us. The event will be held at the Riverview Park (near the Chicago Cubs training facility) near the intersection of Dobson Rd. and Rio Salado Rd. in Mesa. I hope to see you there. We just attended the Anthem Porsches and Pancakes event, organized by Frank and Maria Grimmelmann. About 80 members attended. The venue was amazing, the food was great and the people were awesome. There are a few photos posted on page 24 in Going Places. I believe this was the 6th year it was held there (excluding COVID delays). Thanks Frank and Maria, awesome job. At the most recent Board of Directors meeting there was a lengthy discussion about people who show up at club events without registering. This causes a problem for the event organizers because they then have to figure out how to collect the fee, and sometimes the venue only sets up tables and chairs for the number that have registered. If you want to attend any of the club events, please register in advance. We would not want to have to turn someone away if there are no seats for them. The Arizona Region is running the following upcoming events: · October 30,31 – California Festival of Speed · November 3 – Monthly Meeting – Porsche Chandler · November 5,6 – Flight 43 – Riverview Park – Tempe · November 13,14 – DE at Inde (Wilcox, AZ) · November 20 – AutoX at AMP · December 1 – Monthly Meeting – Alpio’s at Troon · December 4 – Driving Tour – East Valley “Five 7s” drive · December 11 – AutoX at AMP · December 12 – DE at AMP · December 18 – Annual Holiday Party – Hilton Pointe Tapatio I hope to see you all at an upcoming event. Drive Safely

he holidays are right around the corner. We are very fortunate to be sharing the holidays with our Arizona friends, who are transplants like us. We don’t particular enjoy traveling during the holiday season to spend it with our family back East in Connecticut. The good news is we have already planned to take an East Coast road trip again next summer to visit family and friends along the way. We will more than likely drive our Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and not put the miles on the 911. No surprise there! The club has quite a few events coming up. For the most up to date information always check the calendar on the AZPCA website az.pca.org. Make sure to register for upcoming events! Save the date for our Holiday Party on December 18th. This year it’s going to be at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to write stories/articles and take pictures at our AZPCA events for Going Places, because without your participation there would be no monthly newsletter/magazine. If anyone is interested in assisting me with publishing the newsletter, send me an email at: gpeditor@az.pca.org This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Andy Cole for contributing “Driving Tour to South Mountain.” He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. Looking forward to seeing you in person at one of our upcoming events, maybe at our November Monthly Membership meeting hosted by Porsche Chandler! Wishing everyone a healthy and Happy Thanksgiving holiday.

T

he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Membership Chair, I would like to introduce featured members, Andy and Lori Hyde.

1. When did you join PCA?

I joined PCA about 10 days ago (9/15). I’ve been a member of several car clubs through the years, starting with BMW in 1988, but this is my first time with anything Porsche.

2. What Porsche(s) do you have?

My first Porsche was a 1994 911T that I bought new from Wallingford Porsche in CT. Triple black, 20,000 current miles, I still own it. Last December a 2007 GT3 RS pumpkin, 9,000 miles, joined the herd. I might be the seventh owner, the number escapes me. Those are my only two, ever.

3. Where are you from?

That’s a good question. A bit of a gypsy. Born in TX, raised in TN, FL, PA, and NH. I’ve lived in NY, CO, MS, and CA too. My wife of five months, a first for both of us. She is a NY and FL girl but absolutely loves it here in the valley.

4. Family? No kids.

| 14 |

C ha i r

5. Work background or trade?

As for trades, my wife Lori spent her career in HR. She ran a big department in Hong Kong for years. I’m a former Marine, small business and finance background.

6. What makes your car special?

Nothing special about my cars except they’re mine. I upgraded the 94 with an exhaust 20 years ago. .

7. Next upgrade?

I’ll wait and see what other members have done. I’m good at modding Evos, STIs, and fox body mustangs. I don’t know much about modding Porsches.

8. Why did you buy your Porsche?

That’s a great story. I left the house to buy a Viper and drove home with the Turbo. Too ignorant to know why at the time, but what a smart decision I stumbled into!

9. High school nickname?

My high school nickname was Boone. That used to be my last name, now it’s my first name. Adopted twice, can’t give away all my trade secrets.

10. Top 3 cars you would own?

How about a DB4/5, GTC 330, and….something Singer or Weissach.

AUTOCROSS

AUTOCROSS SEASON SERIES 2021/2022 EVENT #1 STORY and PHOTOS BY KENNETH MITCHELL

T

he 2021 Autocross Series Summer Break is behind us now, so are the Arizona summer days and the monsoons. The Autumnal Equinox was the Wednesday just before the event, so we are now heading into more favorable Porsche Autocross weather. The first event of the 2021/2022 AZPCA Autocross Series was held on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at the Arizona Motorsports Park in Litchfield Park. The weather was a tad on the warm side but that did not discourage 42 drivers from attending the first event of the season. The event was sold out well over a month in advance. If you’ve never been to an autocross event and you are wondering why these events continue to be sold-out so quickly you should sign up for an AZPCA Region Autocross Event to find out for yourself. You missed what is called a “WOW” experience. It was fun-packed, and you couldn’t ask for a better event. AZPCA Region member, Eric S, posted a video of one of his runs in his Porsche Carrera on the Region’s Facebook page. Take a look at Eric’s posting and see how much fun he had driving his Porsche on an autocross course. Apparently, the word is spreading throughout PCA land about how well the AZPCA Region Autocross Series Events are conducted and the fun factor to be had by everyone. The PCA Zone 8 Autocross Chair, Bill T., and his wife and former PCA National Autocross Chairperson, Kathy T., traveled from the San Diego Area with their highly modified and fast Porsche Boxster to attend our region’s first event of the season. Bill and Kathy enjoyed the event, and both are traveling back home with the honors of setting the two fastest top times of the day. Rumor has it that they are checking their calendars to see if they can attend future AZPCA Region autocross events. | 18 |

As usual, the Region’s Autocross Co-Chairs, Kim K., and Rick A., did an excellent job in kicking off the first event of the 2021/2022 AZPCA Region Autocross Series. The course ran in a clockwise direction and had several slalom segments to test the Porsche car’s superior ability to negotiate the different elements of the course. The course was easy to follow even for the AZPCA Region members that elected to give it a try for their first autocross event. There were very few off-course excursions and cone penalties. However, there were three drivers who tied, with three cone penalties each, to earn the honors of the “Top Cone Killer” for the day. The ol’ saying goes if you’re not hitting cones from time to time, you’re probably not getting close enough to them. The point is you want to get close to just scare them but not hit them. Because there is a noticeable disparity in lap times between the cars that run on different types of tires, the drivers and their cars were placed in one of two categories. The two categories are “Street Tire” (tires and their cars are typically driven to and from the autox) and “Race Tire” (sticky tires with almost no tread pattern that often require the car to be trailered). There were 39 drivers in the “Street Tire” category and 3 drivers in the “Race Tire” category. The drivers drove 3 continuous laps, with each lap being separately timed, in both the morning and the afternoon sessions. The average lap time for the “Street Tire” group was 46.151 seconds and in the “Race Tire” group the average time was 39.247.

The best lap time in the “Street Tire” group was 40.928 driven by Kim K. and the best lap time in the “Race Tire” group was 38.818 driven by Kathy T. The second-best driving times were driven by Eric S. with a time of 41.034 and Bill T. (Kathy T.’s husband) with a time of 38.926, in their respective tire groups. Honorable mentions with third place finishes are Martin R. in his Porsche Cayman with a time of 41.072 in the “Street Tire” category (for an all-Porsche Podium in Street Tire!) and Ken M. with a time of 39.999, in the “Race Tire” category. In the Street Tire Category, the top three finishing positions were only separated by .144 second and in the Race Tire Category the top two finishing positions were separated by .108. Those are very close lap times in both tire categories, and it doesn’t get any better than that. Close lap times increases the fun-factor and camaraderie among all the entrants.

Among the first-time drivers were Steve E., Randall T., Robert V., and Kristopher H. Kristopher is the husband of Chularat H. Both Kristopher and Chularat shared driving the family Macan, a very capable Porsche at an autocross. The best time among this group was a 45.953 driven by Kristopher H. in his Porsche Macan followed by Randall T. with a time of 46.018 in his Porsche Carrera. Steve E. drove a best lap time of 55.298 in his Porsche Carrera and Robert V drove a lap time of 58.115 in his Porsche Carrera Turbo S. Nice job drivers and hopefully, you’ll sign up for future events. All the first-time drivers did an excellent job driving the course and it appears that they drove their Porsche like they either stole it or were driving their parent’s car. This is a starting point and there is no doubt that they will better their driving skills by entering future events. Oh, did I forget to mention about the Fun-Factor to be had again? In fact, here is photographic evidence of some of the first-time drivers and what they thought about their first experience at an AZ PCA Region autocross event.

ALL TIMES ARE RAW ADD 2 SECONDS FOR EACH CONE

The third event of the 2021/2022 AZ PCA Region Autocross Series is scheduled for Saturday, November 20, 2021. The entries for this event are well underway with very few driver spots available. Don’t be left out. You better sign up before the maximum limit is reached, again. The registration deadline for the November event is Friday, November 19, 2021. You will need to sign up using your motorsportreg.com account just like you do for the Driving Tours and/or Dinner Meetings. During the sign-up process, there will be a link for you to click on for the Electronic PCA Event Waiver (“Speedwaiver”). It is mandatory that you complete the electronic waiver prior to the event, and if you are inviting a guest, you will need to send them the electronic waiver link for the guest to complete. We always highly recommend walking the course as often as possible before the start of the event. Experienced auto crossers are available for novice course walk-n-talks to help explain key cones, braking and acceleration zones and car positioning while walking the course. Lastly, our instructors are ready to provide in car driving feedback during your run, if you request it. If you have any questions, you can email either Kim K. or Rick A. at autocross@az.pca.org. Hope to see you and your car at the next event.

DRIVING TOUR TO SOUTH MOUNTAIN STORY AND PHOTOS BY ANDY COLE, AZPCA Chief Concours Judge

O

n Sunday, September 19th, 32 fine examples of the Porsche marque cars gathered for the drive to South Mountain. Both existing and new members attended with some notable new additions of the cars we idolize, including a 911 Turbo S and a very nice 911 GT3. As with all driving tours, rules and expectations of the PCA and local club rules were shared and detailed directions and guidelines provided to make the event as pleasurable as possible. Two groups of 15 Porsches with a lead and sweep cars were identified and our President, Mark Baker led the first group away. Never easy for 32 cars to navigate the surface streets of Scottsdale, Phoenix and Tempe without the many traffic signals breaking the groups up, however, there was time at the lights to take a few photos and one of my favorite is of Gregg and Alison Bull in their 993 cab!

The view back across the valley was breathtaking and as a new member to the club and to the greater Phoenix area, it gave a tremendous sense of the City that is now home to many of us. As this was the final driving destination, participants enjoyed each other’s company, the views and then broke for lunch once the official driving event was at an end.

The drive back down the mountain was exhilarating and seemed to end way too soon for all those that love to drive their Porsche vehicles. On behalf of all the attendees on this driving tour, our

By the time we stopped at Target in Tempe, all the cars were back together and on schedule. After a 15 minute stop, it was back on the road and off the beaten track to head up the hill to our final destination. It’s a joy to watch onlookers and their reaction as various Porsches pass by and it always brings a sense of renewed pleasure as many folks wave and smile at the line of Porsches driving by. The groups weaved their way up the mountainside along the beautifully curved roads arriving at the summit of South Mountain a little after noon. | 22 |

thanks as always to our Driving lead, Rook and Debbie Younger for another well organized, safe and enjoyable event, way to go Rook and Debbie! Until the next event, stay safe and enjoy miles of smiles in your Porsche!

CAN YOU “DRIVE” A GOLF BALL? STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER

I

have a confession to make. I’ve been playing golf, on and off, almost as long as I’ve had a driver’s license. It’s a passion of mine. Driving a golf ball. Like driving a car. It’s all the same.

But they know, deep down, that a new putter, or driver, or hybrid 4-iron or lofted 60-degree wedge will turn their life around. In short, technology is a golfer’s friend.

Or is it? The thing that gets me is … why? Out of all the things one can do with their time, especially their leisure time, why am I drawn to these activities, sustained over decades?

Just as it is in driving and racing. I like the line “racing is a matter of money; how fast do you want to go?” Coil-overs. A chipped engine. Carbon-ceramic brakes. Carbon-fiber body parts. Yes, technology is also a racer’s friend.

I’ve been trying to figure it out. The commonalities. The differences. To see if an answer emerges. Follow me on this. First, the obvious. I love to drive. And I love to drive a golf cart. With anyone who has ever played with me, the first question from my playing partner is, “do you want to drive the cart?” And I try to be cool with my answer. I mutter “uh, yeah.” But they know that, if I’m not behind the wheel, I’ll be a fidgeting idiot, nudging the seat, staring at the driver, doing anything to get the buggy … moving! I just can’t stand edging along, especially when there’s an open cart path, or open road, ahead. Then there’s watching golf … and motor racing … on TV. The commonality? To the uninitiated, both are as riveting as watching the grass grow on a putting green or in a runoff area. Ah, but if you have an interest, then watching the best players, or drivers, is a font of wonderment. The cardinal question is, how do they do that? How do they get out of that bunker and stick it to six inches from the flag? How do they catch a slide at 150 and power through to a new lap record? In both cases, we’re looking for the secret, the silver bullet, the nugget that will solve all our problems. Of course, these things don’t really exist. But that doesn’t matter, because we’re convinced that, by soaking up the grandeur of the best of the best, somehow, some way, it will rub off on us. Every time we tee it up. Every time we get behind the wheel. And that leads to what I call shots that will get you to come back next week. In every round, everyone, no matter the level of play, does something that is so satisfying to them that they know, they just know, that, next week, they’ll be able to replicate that glimpse of greatness, for a full round. It could be a booming drive down the middle. It could be sinking a 30-foot putt. It could be sticking that approach to six inches. It’s like the perfect approach to a corner, just the right amount of braking, hitting the apex and jumping on the power … again and again … for perfect and perfectly consistent lap times. Is it a dream? Maybe not, if I can absorb and internalize one more YouTube lap of Monaco, with Senna behind the wheel. Then there’s the equipment. If a golfer makes a bad swing, he or she might mumble, “it’s not the clubs.” | 36 |

And, for those who are wondering, a bag filled with golf clubs does fit into every modern Porsche, even a Boxster. Just take out the woods, and the bag will slide effortlessly into the rear trunk. Then just lay the woods on top, shut the lid and off you go. Ok, now, here’s where I get confused. To quote Hemingway, “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.” I can’t argue with that. Are you risking your life on a golf course? Maybe, if lightning strikes or an errant golf shot happens to catch you in the noggin. But … the chances of that happening? It’s not like Grosjean bursting through the Armco, his car engulfed in flames. Spinning a golf cart on wet grass is not the same. No. The ball’s not moving when you try to hit it. It’s just sitting there, daring you to take it back, low and slow, keep your head still, hinge your wrists, shift your weight … these are called swing thoughts, and the list is bewilderingly endless. Chevy Chase sums it up in “Caddyshack” -- be the ball. Now, do you want to be the car? No, you want to control the car, feel the car, feel it on the ragged edge of adhesion, feel the sensations -- acceleration, braking, g-forces – feel the adrenaline rush of it all. Then there’s the social aspect. Here’s the reality about golf. You play a round of golf with someone and, after 18 holes, you know them. You know how they react to adversity, how well they come back, how well they keep their emotions under control, how well they can execute under pressure. Because, no matter how good they are, stuff will happen in a round, any round, every round. And the key test is how they cope. I can’t think of anything else like it. You’re up, you’re down, you experience euphoria, you deal with defeat. And you can do it with anyone, a tour player or a duffer, so long as they know the etiquette. You can’t do that with tennis, or auto racing, or any other sport or game. A round of golf is one big allegory for life. See what I mean? Golf and cars. They’re the same … and different. So there’s only one solution. A road trip with golf clubs! A golfing, driving holiday! Beep-beep, fore, playing through!

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES STORY BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION 101 PROJECTS FOR YOUR PORSCHE 911 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 [Air Cooled] by Wayne Dempsey, published 2019 by Motorbooks. Minneapolis, MN

T

his is a reprint of the first book in Wayne Dempsey’s outstanding series of ‘101 Projects’ books, and when it was written it did cover all 911s. Now it needs the amended title. Pages 5-239 are exact copies of the 2001 edition, though on this reviewer’s copies the ‘new’ book has more vivid colors. The companion book, 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 1998-2008, makes clear what vehicles it covers. For the enthusiast working on his own cars, Dempsey’s books can serve as, and to some degree improve upon, the factory workshop manuals. Though precise and accurate, they are written for the home hobbiest not the professional mechanic. As such they deal with the ‘how’ to do things, not just the ‘what’ to do. Like all in the series, this book is very well illustrated, and somewhat unique in the use of different colored arrows to differentiate between aspects of the work being illustrated. It is very well indexed, the author being very much aware of the problem with books that index Brake Rotors under D for ‘Disk, Brake’, so all of Dempsey’s books index topics by all their common names/nicknames. 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 uses a distinct howto format. Step-by-step instructions and high resolution color pictures, tell you how to perform the job and what costly or time consuming mistakes to avoid. Arranged in 11 color coded sections, each focusing on a particular system (Engine, Fuel, Brakes, Electrical, etc.), the book is not meant to be read from cover to cover, but to provide guidance on whatever project suits the need or mood of the owner at any given time. It is feasible to just flip through the book and undertake whatever project seems interesting.

Each project description starts with a table summarizing the nature of the project – “Time required, Tools, Applicable Years, Parts, etc. There is also a graphic indicator of the degree of difficulty for each project covered. Projects range in complexity from “Jacking Up Your Car” and “Changing Engine Oil”, to “Setting Timing, Dwell and Idle Speed” and “Broken Stud Removal”. Between those two extremes are 96 other projects covering a wide gamut. Aftermarket ‘tweaks’ are not ignored: Project 39 is “Installing a Short Shift Kit; Project 84 is “Installation of a Chin Spoiler”, etc. The purchase of this book is not an expense, it is an investment; an investment with a very high rate of return. You can almost get your money back in the first oil change or air conditioner recharge you do yourself. It is the goal of the book to get more people out working on their 911s. As the author says: “it’s too much fun not to”! This book is written to be an inspiration to the do-it-yourselfer, as well as a guidebook, and is a ‘must-have’ for owners of air cooled 911s. Even if you don’t intend to do your own work, you may find that it inspires you do a project after all, boosting both your ego and your pride in ownership. If you resist the inspiration to doit-yourself, it is still worthwhile read up on the work to be done to better understand the estimate presented by a ‘professional’ shop. 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 is softbound and contains 240 8-1/4x10-1/2 inch glossy pages, and is available for $29.59 (an absolute bargain compared to any other ‘shop manual’), from your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or from http://QuartoKnows.com where the applicable years are indicated in the listing.
