ell, we are still unable to have social events. I suspect it will be a while. Although, I have read many science articles about vaccine development and trials, there is no guarantee that this will solve the problem since polls seem to suggest only about 50% of the population is willing to get the vaccine. That won’t be sufficient. The best vaccines we have perform two functions: 1) prevent or minimize infections and 2) reduce transmission of a virus by reducing the viral burden or interfering with the viral shedding that leads to others getting infected. Unfortunately, the current COVID-19 vaccine trials are focusing only on the first function and only a few are looking at function 2. Nevertheless, if we do come up with a vaccine, please consider getting it! We have started scheduling driving events beginning in September with an autocross followed by a DE in October. We are following federal, state and PCA guidelines to insure safety. For the most part, you will remain in your cars to maximize social distancing so these should be safe and fun events. I don’t know that we have resolved the instructor issue for DE’s but we are working on it with PCA National. Also in October, we will try a tour to Prescott. Our highest priority is our members’ safety, so join us if you can, unless you have any symptoms or suspect you have been exposed. Our region elections are coming up soon. We have nominees for most of the open positions except next year’s President. I am more than willing to help whoever is willing to run for this position, so please consider volunteering. Right now, I am dealing with fires just upwind of my home by Superstition Mountain. The Superstition Fire has jumped the mountain moving west and is near the state park on RT 88, about 2 miles from my home. There have been several dumps of fire retardant, over the past few days, but I have not heard any warnings of possible evacuations. I have a friend in Vacaville, CA who just lost his house last week. They are living in a hotel for now. I am nervous and concerned. We are continuing our monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month by teleconference. To join, sign up through MotorsportReg.com and you will receive a link to the meeting. Please join us! ‘Nuff said. Drive safely!

ooks like our red flag in Arizona is changing back to yellow and a few events are on the calendar for the fall. Keep an eye on our calendar on the club website for up to the minute event information. Our membership monthly meetings are still being held on-line. Make sure to sign up. Mark and I took our 10 day national parks road trip last month. We went to the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone and the Grand Teton. Some of the parks were not crowded but Yellowstone was. It was a great trip and we escaped some of the heat in the valley. Check out the pictures on page 26, “Waiting for the Green Flag.” We took our Audi S5 instead of the Cayman because we didn’t want to put the miles on it because we had been planning to attend Treffen Greenbrier, but we decided to cancel due to concerns related to COVID-19. Well another year, no national awards for our newsletter! Some of the judges’ feedback dinged us for not having enough follow up event articles, we had well written articles but not a lot of them, tech articles would help and chairs’ articles too and work on reformatting the calendar layout. I know that we don’t have many club events going on, but I am sure many of you are doing car projects. How about sharing your experience with us? This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Michael Chieco for “Meet A Member.” He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. Our Club Board elections for 2021 will be coming up soon. Why not consider throwing your hat in the ring for one of the open positions? As the saying goes, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.” Hope to see you at an upcoming event once it is safe to all get together. In the meantime, stay safe!

The Heart of a Porsche Owner by Donny Blackburn original artwork by Donny Blackburn
H
ave you ever thought about what it is that makes your Porsche so important to you? Have you ever wondered what it is inside you and other passionate Porsche owners that makes your dopamine flow? Me too. My life with Porsches has allowed me to come in contact with a bunch of PPPs (Passionate Porsche People). I wondered, what was the theme, the common thread, among these people? Look around at the many variations of this brand passion and you’ll see every facet of these cars being celebrated around the world. Every year, every model, every nuance of fitment, the uber-rare, racers, collectors, drivers, historians, builders, clubs, and more clubs. “Heart” is a common and necessary element of every variation of the brand. If you have heart, you can find your own passion within the myriad limbs on the Porsche family tree. Doctors, lawyers, business professionals, truck drivers, housewives, engineers, artists, families and singles, young and old, pretty much a place for your passion anywhere you like. Most others consider Porsches to be exotic or expensive. No argument there. But Porsches are also fantastic and durable drivers. If you look around here, there are many affordable Porsche cars to fit all levels of interest. For the current owners of any Porsche, the passion continues to give you options. You can simply own and drive the Porsche of your choice, own and do most of your own wrenching, be a weekend driver. There’s PCA club involvement, track days, Club Racing, touring, collecting, investing, and much more. Porsche cars come in a full spectrum of thrilling choices. From the new Macan, the Cayenne, Cayman, the 911 series, Panamera, 4 & 6 cylinder, V8, Standard shift, PDK, 3.4. 3.6, 3.8, 4.0, C2, C4, R, RS RST, GTS, TURBO, Turbo S, GT2, GT3, GT3RS (just to name a few). Porsche does not produce a one-size-fits-all car like some other brands out there. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! Your passion will come from selecting and owning the Porsche that best triggers your personal interests. No matter what that might be, you’ll find many, many in the Porsche world who share the same passion. Once you allow yourself to take the step into Porsche ownership by finding “the one,” you can’t help but fall in love with what’s right there in front of you. You have taken the first step into an amazing world. Steps, not with your feet or your hard earned cash, but with your heart. So ask yourself, “What is it that turns my head, gets my attention, stirs something in me I like?” Porsches are seldom purchased by “look-at-me” posers. Most are purchased because someone’s heart found its happy thought. Then they have to have it!! Once in the pool, you learn to swim with a huge family of others who share and understand your personal passion for all things Porsche… Personally, I have owned many exotic and special sports cars over the years. Looking back at my first Porsche in 1970, there is definitely no substitute for me any longer! I love my Porsches with all my... heart! Take away that element and it’s time to buy a freakin’ Corvette!! I guess you could say I have a “heart” for Porsche… On my sleeve, for my cars, and for the passion it brings to us all.

Porsche 911 Turbo, Tampa Bay to Phoenix or The Adventures of Jim and Jack by Jim Roberts
I
sold my Boxster in early April to Paul Miller, a member of our club, and decided to look for a 996 Turbo. I looked for one locally, found a couple, but decided to look elsewhere. I scanned most of the usual sites including Panorama and Excellence. There were only a limited number of available listings, and many of the inquiries I made went unanswered. I decided to look in older issues of Panorama and identified a couple of cars to check to see if they were still available. There was one of particular interest. I sent an email of inquiry and to my surprise a day later I received a reply from the owner that the car was still available. The owner had been out of the country for some time and the listing had been dropped. The car was located in Tampa Bay and this is where The Journey began.
Jim Roberts’ 911 Turbo: --on display (above) --as a cover model (above right) --and with proud new owner, Jim Roberts
| 20 |
We exchanged emails, had a conversation, and he sent me recent photos of the car. We agreed to move forward and I contacted the local Porsche dealer to perform a Pre-Purchase Inspection. They had done exclusive service on the car for several years. The PPI was very good with the exception of the rear tires, which I was told were not acceptable to make the return trip back to Phoenix. With the PPI completed we both decided to move forward on the transaction. On Saturday, the annual Windgate Ranch car show was taking place, and Jack Aman had entered his beautiful 911 for display. When I arrived I showed Jack pictures of my future purchase. I told him of my plan to fly into Tampa and drive the car home. Jack had never been to the southern states and thought that he would enjoy the trip and experience. Over the weekend we booked the flights from Phoenix to Tampa with a plane change in Houston. Tuesday, Day 1: Phoenix to Tampa Bay, Florida The plan was to take an early flight from Phoenix and to arrive in Tampa around 2:00 pm. The owner was to meet us at the airport. From there we would go to the bank to complete the transaction. Following that, we would go to the Florida DMV, get a temporary license tag to drive home, and be on our way out of Tampa. Needless to say, all didn’t go according to plan! The flight to Houston was rough but we arrived on time. Due to bad weather, our flight to Tampa was delayed by 1-2 hours. It was a white-knuckle flight all the way. Upon our safe arrival, the owner couldn’t meet us as planned, so we took a cab to meet at the bank. With all transactions completed we proceeded to the “Tax Collector” facility, Florida’s terminology for the DMV, to obtain a temporary license. Surprise! We discovered that anyone purchasing a car in Florida, even from a private party, must pay state sales taxes on all transactions. Needless to say, we didn’t get a temporary tag license. Because of all of the delays and issues, we spent the night in Tampa, went to the dealer in the morning, had the new tires installed, and finally left Tampa about 2:00 pm. Wednesday, Day 2: Tampa Bay to Gulf Shores, Alabama Our planned route was pretty much to drive I-10 all the way back to Phoenix. I-10 goes directly through Gulf Shores, Alabama. My ex-partner and his wife live there.
We managed to get there before dark fell and the rain began. We spent an enjoyable night with old friends and readied ourselves for the journey home. Thursday, Day 3: Gulf Shores to Houston, Texas We went to the local Alabama DMV, got temporary license tags good for 30 days ($2.25), and were on our way. It was raining heavily with poor visibility and bad driving conditions. We were barely out of Gulf Shores on the freeway when we were stopped by the Alabama Highway Patrol. With the bad weather and tinted windows, they couldn’t see the tag in the rear window of the car. After a brief stop and confirmation of a valid tag, we were once again on our journey home. The rain and wind were extremely hard, making for a difficult drive. We managed to get into Houston at just the wrong time: Rush hour, 5:00 pm! It took us about two hours to clear the traffic and leave town. We soon stopped for the night. Friday: Day 4: Houston to Lordsburg, New Mexico We drove through San Antonio and the balance of Texas. We drove hard but had to stop several times due to the bad weather and no visibility. Saturday: Day 5: Lordsburg to Phoenix, Arizona We started our final leg back to Phoenix early in the morning and upon arriving back into Arizona we finally saw sunshine! We arrived back at Jack’s home about 9:30 am. What a trip! What could have been a beautiful journey turned out to be a very messy and difficult drive due to the terrible weather. The worst part was that Jack didn’t get to observe much of the territory because of such poor visibility. The most important thing was that both we and the new purchase arrived home safely. Our plan was to take lots of pictures of the journey and the car along the way, but unfortunately by the time the weather had finally cleared it was difficult to tell what color the car was! The photos accompanying this article were taken after we got home and got the car cleaned up. Editor’s note: Article reprinted from September 2015 Going Places.

In Every Era There’s Only One Genius by Danielle Badler
A
t the start of “A Life of Speed: The Juan Manuel Fangio Story,” a documentary now available on Netflix, Jackie Stewart says something to the effect that, at any given time, there are millions of drivers on the roads, thousands of drivers with a competition license, and a few hundred who are real competitors. But only 21 in Formula 1. And, out of those 21, six are really good. Three are exceptional. And generally there’s only one genius. Fangio, Stewart says, was the genius of his era … and maybe all modern eras. Of course, I had a general knowledge of the Argentine. But it was sketchy. I seem to recall stories about, anywhere in his native country, Fangio would walk into a restaurant and everyone would immediately stand up, and clap. Turns out, it was indeed like that at his funeral, in 1995, in his native village of Balcarce. Stewart, a pallbearer, along with Stirling Moss, Carlos Reutemann and a few other drivers, says that 10,000 mourners stood, absolutely silent, outside the church. When the procession came out, you suddenly heard a clap … then a second … then a third … then a thunderclap of applause. What’s this all about? Here’s part of the answer. In the closing credits, they list his Grand Prix tallies. 51 races. 29 poles. 35 podiums. 24 victories. Five world championships. In four different teams. And he went to Europe to race at the ripe old age of 37. Fangio expected to race one season. He stayed for ten, retiring at 47. “I had two accidents,” Fangio says. In his career. “Both were because I was tired.” The first came midway through one of the marathon long-distance races across Latin America in which Fangio competed earlier in his career. This one was from Buenos Aires to Caracas. Expecting to lay over in Lima, overnight, he was told he had to leave in the middle of the night, because of an expected coup d’état in the am. He proceeded to roll his car, killing his riding mechanic and best friend. The second came at Monza. On Saturday, he raced in Ireland. To get to Italy the next day, he expected to hitch a ride with Prince Bira on his private plane, only to find that Bira had left early, having dropped out of the race. So he flew to London, then to Paris, where he was loaned a car, which he drove overnight to the track, arriving at 2 pm. He started at the back, proceeded to pass cars left and right … and clipped a guardrail midrace. Fangio was hospitalized a second and final time. Talk about how times have changed! And, remember, during Fangio’s era, 65 drivers died. Mika Hakkinen says three, four, five died every year in those days. Stewart counted 57, who died during his era. “Never drive tired,” Fangio simply says.“I realized dying is not so bad,” Fangio says. “There’s no time to think … I believe in predestination … nobody dies before their time.” But he also believed in preparation. Fangio was a mechanic before he was a race driver. This understanding of machinery, he believed, gave him a unique advantage.

He could not just feel, he could understand the limits of the car, where maximum performance was. Moss is quoted saying he loved to follow Fangio on the track. Because his line was perfect, again and again. “It was a fantastic experience following someone as good as that.” From Moss! According to Hans Hermann, his teammate at Mercedes in ’54 and ‘55, Fangio would walk the track before a race. Or bicycle it. Or motorbike it, if it was a long course. He would study it for days, memorize every detail. “You have to help fate,” Fangio said. “Fate can’t do it alone.” And he would work on his car with his mechanic. Once he polished the crankcase of his engine until it was perfect, until 1 am. Giving his team the time to reassemble the package, and giving himself time to sleep. So, was he the best ever? Hakkinen says he drove a few of Fangio’s racers. The cars then were not designed for any form of comfort for the driver, he says. Just speed. “The gearbox, the steering. It was really difficult.” Horatio Pagani says that, today, you need precision. Then, you needed art. Today, you add art to precision and you have a world champion. Then, you added precision to art and you had a world champion. So, was he the best ever? In the film, Senna is shown saying it. Prost says it. Moss says it. But we leave it to a researcher from the UK, who analyzed assorted variables – wins, losses, the team, the cars, the competition, the weather, whether the track is a street course or not. The conclusion? Teams matter most. If you’re part of a poor team, you will not win. But drivers matter. And Fangio is at the top of the list of drivers who matter. Others were similarly versatile, in any conditions, dry or wet. Senna and Schumacher, for example. But nobody did it in four different cars, won consistently in four different cars. On four different teams. And that’s the difference. Which is difficult to see being repeated in the modern sport. Stewart echoes this point. “Fangio always knew which team to go to. In my era, you had three-year contracts. Today you have threeyear contracts, sometimes five years. You can’t switch machinery like he could in his day.” And consistently win. “When you’re in your prime, it’s hard to retire,” Fangio says. “My plan was one year in Europe. I did ten. I grew tired of racing. I decided it was over.” Yeah, I know. Remarkable. A remarkable life. Watch the documentary. See for yourself.
BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast Region
PORSCHE Water Cooled Turbos 1979-2019
W
ater cooled Porsche Turbo engines first appeared with the 924s and were proven in 944s and 968s. before the rear-engined cars began to have water cooled engines. Yes, it is true, the front-engined water-pumpers ARE a significant part of the Porsche heritage,
The foreword by Alois Ruf touting his 45 years experience with Porsche Turbos. is followed by a very interesting and comprehensive ‘Timeline” of Porsche’s utilization of Turbochargers in water-cooled ‘street’ vehicles. The book is fascinating because of the stories told about the various models in action. Far from just a dry rendition of model sstatisticss (tabulated in both English and Metric units), there are drive reports, race reports from ‘historic’ races using these vehicles, and ‘reminiscences’ (complete with pictures), from people involved in these cars when they were new and ‘hot’. A very interesting and readable book even for people not Turbo enthusiasts. PORSCHE Water Cooled Turbos has five chapters, one on the front engined cars, then one each on the 996, 997, 997 and the Boxster/Caymans. In each chapter, stories of the various models are told in detail with comprehensive treatment of the esthetics and very detailed coverage of the mechanicals. The descriptions are very well illustrated and include a test drive of a representative example (or two), driving around England and/or Europe. More than a commentary of how a partiular model feels to drive, the reports provide comprehensive travelogues of interesting tours, complete with route numbers and road names, as well as scenic highlights. The scope of this book is so comprehensive that there is even a detailed description and drive report for a 968-RS Turbo, of which Porsche only made four. Similar treatment is given to one of 14 968 TurboSs. All Turbo ‘models’ are covered including both generations of the 997 Turbo.
There is a very comprehensive index including an entry “Porsche Cars” tabulating model number and displacement. Road test reports for and detailed descriptions of various Ruf cars and several TechArt models are presented in the chapters dealing with their respecctive Porsche antecedents.. The discussion of a visit to Freisinger Motorsports of Karlsruhe is full of anecdotes about the lives of the truly historic race cars, which he restores. FVD Bombacher cars are also covered in detail; Atomic Tuner’s car somewhat less so. Famous drivers e.g. Derek Bell, Walter Rӧhrl, Jacky Icks, etc. are interviewed about their experiences with specific Water Cooled Turbos, and there is a picture of Vic Elford displaying the classic crossedarms grip on the wheel. PORSCHE Water Cooled Turbos is a very readable and entertaining collection of stories about these cars with captivating drive reports as well as technical discussions. It is suitable for any automotive or even touring enthusiast. It is indeed informative, and probably a must-read for any potential turbo buyer, but definitely not just for Porsche gear-heads. It is hardbound with 224, 8.5 in x 10.2 in inch matte finish pages, including 330 color photos. It should be available for $44.95 from your favorite bookseller or from Amazon books.
