Adam & Eve

Adam & Eve The Day Sin Came in

dam and Eve lived in a perfect world. Everything was beautiful and peaceful. They were very happy.

God told Adam and Eve to take care of the garden and enjoy the juicy apples, oranges, nectarines, pears, rock melons, watermelons and bursting raspberries. But said God, ‘Do not eat the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of good and evil because the day that you do, you will surely die’. One sunny, perfect day Eve was walking through the garden when she came across the serpent. The serpent was the most beautiful of all the animals. It was a bright, upright shining creature and it could talk to humans! Now Eve did not know this but the serpent she met was actually Lucifer in disguise. Lucifer was the greatest angel in heaven. But he had come down to earth to do something very terrible. He was turning bad. He spoke to Eve and she stopped to talk. Oh no! Serpent: Has God said you should not eat the fruit from every tree in the garden?

Eve: No. God has said we can eat the fruit from all the trees except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. If we eat that fruit, God said we will surely die.

Serpent: No no you will not die! [What a liar!] When you eat that fruit you will be like God and know everything.

Eve looked at the fruit and saw how nice it was...

Eve put out her hand... Eve picked the fruit... Eve ate the fruit... Eve picked some fruit for Adam... Adam took the fruit... Adam ate the fruit…

OH NO! Adam and Eve disobeyed God! Adam and Eve were sad for the first time in their lives. But God was sadder. He was grieved. That means He was so sad that He hurt in His heart. God saw sin come into His perfect world. It wrecked all of His creation. People, animals, plants, planets… everything! What had been all very good was suddenly all very bad. When Adam and Eve went to sleep that night they knew things were different. But they never realised that the whole world was changed forever! Adam and Eve were going to spend the rest of their lives finding out how serious and how terrible sin really is. The Bible actually says, ‘Through one man (Adam), sin entered the world and death through sin and thus death spread to all men because all have sinned. (Romans 5:12) Adam and Eve brought sin into the world. Because of sin came death. Now sin and death have been passed on. Everyone has sinned and everyone is dying. What about that serpent? Lucifer became God’s and man’s greatest enemy. God threw Him out of heaven with thousands of angels. Today we call him Satan and his angels are demons.

re you a human being? Then this issue of Golden Bells is for you.

I am going to tell you about your great great great great… grandfather and your great great great great… grandmother. They died a long time before you were born. It is a shame I don’t have any photographs to show you (cameras were not invented back then), because Adam was the most handsome man and Eve was the most beautiful women you would have ever seen. They lived in a place called ‘The Garden of Eden’. You would have loved to live there. It was full of all kinds of trees. Apple trees, orange trees, mango trees, fig trees, banana trees and who knows what other trees! Then there were two really special trees – the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and the Tree of Life. The Garden was also full of animals. Your great great great great etc. etc. grandfather Adam actually gave all the animals their names. Luckily, he didn’t call them things like ‘Foo Foo’ or ‘Whitey’ or ‘Pooky’ or anything like that. Instead, he called them ‘aardvarks’ and ‘mice’ and ‘rhinoceroses.’ And he called the birds ‘hawks’ and ‘emus’’ and ‘ruby throated warblers.’ Well, actually, we don’t know WHAT Adam named them. He didn’t speak English like you and me. To make #417 of Golden Bells, we had to do some research. Finding history books about Adam and Eve is pretty hard, probably because no one was around when they were alive. Anyway, we did find the greatest history book of the universe written by God Himself who knew Adam and Eve personally. We have included snippets of this book the Bible all through the magazine to make sure we have the facts straight.

What Did God Do?

God Punished

DEATH

Because God is holy. He hates sin more than you or I hate anything.

God Promised a DELIVERER

Because God is good. He loves the human race He created.

For the wages of sin is death...

...But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Death = Separation from God

A Deliverer = A Saviour

Physical death – Once Adam and Eve would have lived forever, now people must grow old and wear out. This is separation from the body.

Someone to save the wrecked and ruined human race.

Spiritual death – Once Adam and Eve had a very close relationship with God, now holy God and sinful people must be distant. Sinners will be separated from God finally and forever in the Lake of Fire.

Rom 3:23

Someone to deliver us from sin and rescue us from death. Someone strong enough to fight with Satan and beat Him once and for all. This Someone was to be God’s own Son – the Lord Jesus Christ from Heaven.

an was made in the image and likeness of God. That means he was like God. It does not mean that Adam looked like God because he did not. He was like God because he had a mind, a heart and a will.

A Mind To think, reason and know A Heart To feel and to love A Will To want and to decide In the beginning, Adam could do all that perfectly, but it was spoilt at the fall by sin. On the face of a shiny new coin you can clearly see the image and likeness of the Queen. Then when it becomes old, you can hardly recognise the likeness. It has been spoilt, dirty and scratched. So the image and likeness of God in man has been spoilt by sin. It must be renewed (Col 3:10). Only Jesus Christ can do it.

When we are born, we are all like Adam. He is the head of the human race. We are born in Adam. We all have his nature. We are sinful, disobedient and mortal. We are under the judgment of God because we are sinners. We are born with sin in us and as we grow, it comes out of us. The sin in our hearts is seen in our actions (Matt 15:19). Our sinful nature is seen in our sinful behaviour. Just like Adam, we die. Adam died spiritually the moment he sinned. He was cut off from the life of God. Later he died physically (Gen 5:5). It is just the same for us. Born in Adam we are dead spiritually, cut off from the life of God.

Next we will all die physically and be buried. Then we will be lost eternally (1 Cor15:22 ‘as in Adam all die’). It is a hopeless situation. Only Jesus Christ can change it. Study the table and see the differences between Adam and Jesus. We need to be taken out of Adam and put into Christ. This is exactly what God does when He saves us. Then all that Adam is and all that he deserves, we loose. All that Christ is and all that Christ has, we gain. It is like being recreated. That is why it is called ‘being born again’. We become new creatures in Christ Jesus, old things have passed away and all things have become new (2 Cor 5:17).

IN CHRIST. A NEW CREATURE. A NEW NATURE. A NEW LIFE. A NEW HOPE. A NEW HOME… HEAVEN.

In Adam

He was tempted He fell [Gen 3:1-7] He became mortal [Gen 5:5] He had physical life [Gen 2:7] He did sin [Rom 5:12] He had sin in him [Rom 7:20] He gave us a sinful nature [Mat 15:19]

In Christ

He was tempted He stood [Mat 4:1-4] He remained immortal [1 Tim 6:16] He has eternal life [1 John 5:11] He did no sin [1 Peter 2:22] He had no sin in Him [2 Cor 5:21] He can give us a new nature [2 Cor 5:17]

We are his children by birth. We can become His children by His sin, disobedience and death is new birth. His righteous obedience our problem and life is our answer.

The Back Page For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous. Romans 5:19
