Jesus’ Journey of Victory over Satan 1. The promise of Satan’s crushing through a woman’s seed is fulfilled • Matthew 1:18 - 24

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, be- fore they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

"Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel"

(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

2. Satan’s attempt to destroy the child is thwarted • Matthew 2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the

male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men.

3. The second Adam stands in temptation, where the first fell • Matthew 4:1-11

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread." But he answered, "It is written,

‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’" Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

"‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and

"‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’" Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’" Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

"‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’" Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

4. The imminence of the collapse of Satan’s rule • John 12:31-32

Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.

5. Jesus testifies to His total immunity from Satan’s efforts I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me

6. Jesus is subjected to the ultimate weapon of Satan: death • Satan was permitted to deliver the most powerful blow he had against the Lord. • Afterwards, the Lord was still stood. • Hebrews 2:14-15

Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

7. Jesus returns to Heaven 8. The Acts of the Apostles begins the story of Satan’s continuing overthrow in the world • From Heaven, the work of setting women free from sin and Satan is continued through the application of Christ’s work by the Holy Spirit. • Colossians 2:12-14 ...giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

9. Jesus will judge the earth and rule when the New Heavens and the New Earth are established • See scripture references in previous studies.
