Genesis 1. Genesis starts with God • Declares firstly His most essential feature: His eternity. • We see immediately that the Bible is declaring God, His intentions, His workings and His relationship with mankind. 2. Key relationships described in Genesis • God’s intentions for the relationship between God and mankind. • God’s intention for the relationship between mankind and creation. • God’s intention for the relationship between men and women. 3. Principles of human society revealed in Genesis • Mankind created for obedience. • Mankind created to take responsibility. • Mankind created to work for his maintenance. • Mankind created for marriage. 4. Origins in Genesis • God; heavens; earth; life; mankind; marriage; evil; languages; culture; music; agriculture; urbanisation; writing; education; navigation; religions; government; law; civil society. • The origin of God’s chosen people is described in the calling of Abraham and the promise concerning his children, who will form a great nation. The promised seed of the woman, sent to crush Satan will also be one of Abraham’s descendants. Exodus 1. Israel to worship God in the Promised Land • The journey from Egypt to the Promised Land is for the liberation of God’s people for the purpose of worshipping their God and enjoying His rest. • Through Moses, the people are freed from Egyptian slavery and enabled to set off on a journey to their inheritance as God’s people. 2. The Law of God is given • Given at Sinai through Moses Leviticus 1. Instruction in the worship of God • Worship of the ONE true and living God prescribed. • Instructed to be a witness to the world in this regard. • The Tabernacle described as the place of worship. • The priesthood and animal sacrifice system is described and established.

2. Shadows & Symbols • All that is described in Leviticus with respect to the ceremonies and the forms of worship is a shadow, symbol or picture of the realities yet to come in Christ. Numbers 1. Punishment • 40 years of wilderness wandering is God’s judgement for the people’s idolatry. • The entire generation which left Egypt will not see the Promised Land on account of their disobedience. 2. Numbering the people • Numbers is given its name because Moses numbered the people (took a census).
