La Zagaleta confirmed as venue for the 2023 PING Junior Solheim Cup

The Old Course at La Zagaleta, located in the town of Benahavís, Malaga, will host the tournament for junior players on September 18th and 19th, 2023 and will serve as a magnificent prelude to the 2023 Solheim Cup. La Zagaleta, one of the most exclusive clubs in Europe, located in the Malaga town of Benahavís, will host the 2023 PING Junior Solheim Cup – a competition for junior players that precedes the 2023 Solheim Cup. The magnificent facilities of this club hosted the presentation ceremony of the 2023 PING Junior Solheim Cup which was attended by a multitude of personalities including Manuel Muñoz, General Secretary for Tourism of the Junta de Andalucía; Antonio Díaz, Managing Director of Turismo Costa del Sol; José Antonio Mena, Mayor of Benahavís; Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of the RFEG; Jacobo Cestino, CEO La Zagaleta; Bertil Hult, Member of the Board of Directors; Javier Carretero, Member of the Direct Board of External Partners; Eva-Lotta Strömlid, Project Director of the PING Junior Solheim Cup; Pablo Bernárdez, Director of the PING Junior Solheim Cup 2023 and Pablo Mansilla, President of the RFGA. “We’re very excited to bring the 2023 PING Junior Solheim Cup to the Old Course at La Zagaleta,” said John Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “It’s a tremendous club that will surely challenge the girls as they play for the honor and pride of their countries. The 2023 PING Junior Solheim Cup will be played on September 18 and 19 and will serve as a great prologue to the 2023 Solheim Cup, which will be held a few days later from September 22-24 at the neighbouring Finca Cortesín. In 2002, the PING Junior Solheim Cup was created as a version of the Solheim Cup for young amateurs under the age of 18 and has a similar format to that of the professional players, pitting the 12 best European golfers against the same number from the United States. The European team will be announced in August 2023, and it will be formed from the best six players on a ranking established from different amateur tournaments that season and six players will be chosen by the captain. The objective of the competition is to give junior golfers from both sides of the Atlantic the opportunity to gain experience in international matches, as well as to meet, learn from and be inspired by the professional players who will compete in the Solheim Cup. It will be the Old Course at La Zagaleta where the European and U.S. teams will face each other in this edition of the PING Junior Solheim Cup, which was designed b Brad Benz in 1991 and later redesigned by Marc Westenborg in 2016. With fairways and green dotted with bunkers and water hazards, to conquer the Old Course it will be more important to develop a technical and precise game than to exhibit a great punch. New links golf course leads La Hacienda’s ambitious transformation Spain’s La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort, formerly known as Alcaidesa, will begin its elevation to a luxury golf destination this summer with the reopening of its redesigned Links course.

Millenium Hospitality, a company which specialises in the luxury hotel sector across Spain and Portugal, is overseeing a multimillion euro investment which will put La Hacienda on the map as a flagship 36-hole golf resort in southern Europe. Spearheading the project to reconfigure and redesign the existing Alcaidesa Links is experienced course designer, Kurtis Bowman, with an aim of not only improving the layout and conditioning but ensuring that sustainability is at the heart of the operation to align with La Hacienda’s commitment to green initiatives and the environment. Located in the Cadiz municipality of San Roque, close to Sotogrande, the Links course is scheduled to open in June 2022 and will run along the beachfront with spectacular views of the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and Africa.

These improvements place The San Roque Club once again at the top of European and world courses on a design level as well as in sustainability and gameplay, in one of the most attractive areas not only of the Spanish peninsula, but also Europe-wide. The tee line of the driving range has been refined, as has the ball landing zone where artificial grass has been placed across all surfaces. A golf school of international renown One of the factors that has made The San Roque Club, and more specifically The Old Course, exemplary, is its capacity to produce great players due to the fact that its layout makes it the ideal place to host important competitions and players can prepare themselves on its challenging greens. This was the reason that Tony Jacklin chose The San Roque Club as his small paradise. Thanks to this, the course has been the host of the European Tour Qualifying School from 1993 to 2007. On its green slopes, amongst the Cork Oak trees and with fabulous views of the Mediterranean, one could find players such as Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Padraig Harrington, or Justin Rose as they achieved their passport for the European Tour. Furthermore, it was the host of the 2005 Spanish Open won by Peter Hansen, a championship which is a feature of the European calendar. The course was renamed Valderrama, after the ancient estate on which the land is situated. The pair shared a common aim: to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike, and would bring out the best golf that is in him. Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989. No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved such recognition. La Cañada

The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a popular course with a large membership. The variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play.

La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

Dona Julia is a new 18 hole, par 71 layout designed by the famous designer Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is set within a huge new development by Casares in the West of the Costa del Sol. The front seven holes go up into the hills with fantastic views of the sea (particularly from the highest part of the course on the 8th tee). Then the back 11 proceed to come down the hill giving a different perspective entirely from the front 7 holes. What you notice about Dona Julia is the overall quality of the course, everything is just how it should be and the fairways are spotless.

The greens likewise and they are huge. In all an excellent course for the money and sure to be a firm favourite because although it is tough it is also fair so should suit all levels of golfer. After your game, wander into the Clubhouse bar to relax and enjoy drinks and food on the sunny terrace. Toughest hole: 10th. Par 4, 405 metres. Stroke index 1 hole and rightly so. Tee off over a valley to a small fairway that runs from left to right in front of you. If you do mange to find the fairway, you have a long second to the large green with water to the right, slicers beware!

Flamingos Golf This 18-hole, 71-par course measuring 5,714 metres was designed by the Spanish architect Antonio García Garrido, known for his meticulous landscaping. It has a great variety of trees and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. The immaculate contoured greens are generous in size but the fairways are slender on the first half of the course, where more precision is needed than on the second half. With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

The setting is incomparable - lush fairways are punctuated by meandering streams, flanked by palm trees and an abundance of exotic fauna, including oleander, jacaranda and mimosas. Lakes provide a home for waterbirds and the golf balls of the unwary! ATALAYA GOLF Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. REAL CLUB DE GOLF LAS BRISAS The Real Club of Golf Las Brisas was founded by D. Jose Banus in 1968 with the name of “Golf Club Nueva Andalucía”; He would be his first President until 1981.

For his design he chose the American Robert Trent Jones, considered already then like one of the best designers of the world of golf courses. He had just built the Sotogrande field, and later Las Brisas would also design Los Naranjos and Valderrama. The tour of this Marbella club presents multiple water obstacles: there are ten artificial lakes fed by two streams. The greens, mostly elevated, are heavily protected by bunkers. The result of the work of Robert Trent Jones, which we continue to enjoy today, was truly remarkable and original, achieving a difficult and attractive course. It was also original in the lawn used: “Bermuda” on the fairways and “Pencross Bentgrass” on greens, unusual species in Europe in the sixties; The consequence of all this is a course that requires playing a precision golf. As opinion of great golf players we can reflect the one of Paul Azinger (USA):

“Las Brisas does not have a bad hole. In fact it’s one of the best courses I’ve ever played.” The original design, the Englishman Gerald Huggan was commissioned by D. José Banús to design the landscaping and the course’s arboretum. Gerald Huggan, a great specialist in subtropical plants, had just returned from Kenya where he had designed the Nairobi gardens. Here at Las Brisas we can enjoy his work and imagination, in a place where there are trees representing all the continents of the world: species from Africa like the Cape Chestnut and the Spiny Acacias; the Indian Laurel and the Mysore Ficus from Asia; Chorisia Speciosa from America; the Green Ash from Mexico; and the Blackwood and the Whistling Pine from Australia, together with numerous species of palms and Mediterranean trees which coexist in great harmony, turning our course into a veritable botanic garden.

especially in 1985 and 1991, our Club became the focus of some of the most prestigious national and international competitions like Their Majesties the King and Queens’ International Cup, the Spanish Open, the Nations’ Cup and the World Cup. The Spanish Open held in 1987 was won brilliantly by Nick Faldo, followed by Severiano Ballesteros, only two strokes behind, with the latter beating the course record with 64 strokes in the Pro-Am played the day before the competition. Kyle Phillips renovated its design in 2015, through the remodelling of the course, this delightful walking venue has been redesigned to respect and improve on the best aspects of the original design, as well as modified to create a new course which will not only continue to bring pleasure to the members, but once again challenge the professional player. Upon the realization of the new practice facility improvements, Las Brisas will be able to offer its members a complete toplevel golf experience.

During the following ten years our Club was open to the public, serving the needs of tourism in the area and playing host to numerous guests, with 44,000 players visiting the course in 1975. In 1981 the Banús Group sold the course to the businessmen Herman Sauer and Juan Romero who decided to transform the Club into a private Club; to do so, they formed the company Sociedad Campogolf, S.A., which holds the Clubs assets, and 1,320 shares were issued. The Club’s facilities and the golf course were improved. In 1983 the Spanish Open was again held at the Club, leading to a resounding sporting success. The Irishman, Eamon D’Arcy, won the Open with the Spaniard, Manuel Piñero, coming second. Both he and José María Cañizares managed to equal the course record. In 1983, and after a period of consolidation as a private Club, Herman Sauer resigned from the Chair, with elections being called at which D. Antonio Fortuny was voted in as Chairman. Cabopino Golf allows all categories of handicap golfers to enjoy a day out. At the entrance to Cabopino Golf Marbella we find the excellent facilities of the Golf Academy and Driving Range. The Driving Range has a capacity for 30 players, with a depth of 200 metres and 160 metres wide, distance markers, bunkers and the natural layout amongst the pine forest make an interesting and challenging practice session. The Academy offers lessons for individual ladies and gentlemen, groups for children and corporate groups.

Cabopino Golf Marbella is located on the border between Marbella and Mijas Costa, opposite the charming little Cabopino Port. The Course was designed by Mr. Juan Ligués Creus, who´s layout presents spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding pine forest. The Course has three par 3´s, two par 5´s and the rest par 4´s. Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, 3rd hole would be the one to mention. The tee box perched on the side of the cliff presents you with a tee shot that has a drop of nearly 80 metres to the fairway, then you face an elevated green protected by a large bunker. Holes 13 and 15 are also attractive, with streams and lakes.

Turn off the highway to Málaga at Riviera del Sol, approximately 15 kms East of Marbella - the course is about 2 kms away.

Very easy to find. Access from either side of the main N-340 road at the ‘La Cala’ turn off. The course is a short distance north.

The third of Cabell B Robinson’s three courses at La Cala has captured the imagination of golfers since its opening in 2005, maturing seamlessly into the spectacular surroundings of the Sierra de Mijas. Dissected by the Ojén, the fourth might just be the most demanding par four in Andalucía. And at 233 metres, the 14th is the longest par 3 in the region. The course, sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson, is set in a former avocado plantation which provided a natural solution to many problems. The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Each hole has two championship tees and two tees for general play for both men and ladies - wide and well manicured putting greens surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, filled with sand produced from crushed marble. Buggy paths are provided throughout the course, beautifully integrated between the rows of fruit trees.

In spite of its previous use, the Avocado Tree or Persea Índica - as it is known by its original name - is not the only tree present here, as many other endemic species like eucalyptus, orange and lemon trees, cactus, pines, fig trees, olive and mango trees make up the varied vegetation of this beautiful enclave, together with a varied population of indigenous birds, with amongst others the calzada eagle. The cork oaks along the 5th hole deserve special mention, as they have been present here for more than 500 years.

the exceptional surroundings, facilities and quality of service. The signature hole of Chaparral, hole 8, is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3, hole 10 is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Chaparral Golf Club is a 18 hole golf course situated in one of the most privileged settings on the Costa del Sol, close to Fuengirola and less than half an hour from Malaga airport and Marbella. It´s the only course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 5’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 3’s and though not excessively long (5,800 meters), you will find a large variety of holes that are enjoyed by players of all levels. The magnificent sea views (only 700 meters from the beach) together with the rich vegetation and the surrounding lush pine tree forest have turned Chaparral into a natural and golfers´ paradise with a unique scenery from every hole. The course was designed by the late Folco Nardi and the idea was to create a course that was technically challenging yet not too difficult. With a good concentration and the correct selection of the clubs the player can end up with a good score in one of the 50 competitions played every year at Lauro Golf. The extension of the course with the holes 1927 designed by Mariano Benitez follows the same lines and equally requires concentration and skills. The course is moderately flat and can be played by foot though there are two holes located on the side of the mountain and from which we can enjoy some spectacular views over the valley of Guadalhorce and the Mediterranean.

The club house is located in an old Andalusian building, Cortijo el Paredón, where you can find the restaurant, changing and locker rooms, pro shop and the Caddy Master´s Office. On our premises and the surroundings you can also find a swimming pool, a padel tennis club, lawn bowls club and an equestrian centre. In the middle of the cortijo there is a fabulous patio, with an enormous ficus tree in the middle which offers shade to the players enjoying their food and drinks after a game of golf.

Anoreta Golf was designed by the Ryder Cup Golf champion Jose Maria Canizares and was the first 18 hold golf course to be built to the east of Malaga city. A par 72 golf course it is 6,016 metres long for the professional player and 5,833 metres long for amateurs. First opened in 1990 Anoreta is a challenging course for all levels of player ability. Of varied design and agreeably surrounded by trees and water, which serves to compliment the natural beauty of the area. Some of the holes are spectacular. The 7th with its impressive views of the sea. The 17th hole, par three, is surrounded by a large lake which makes it a truly impressive green. The club

share an unforgettable day. If you want to get rid of some old balls then keep them for the 3rd hole, you might loose a few here. If you get a par then it might be a good idea to frame the score card for posterity. When you play the 7th hole it would be advisable to avoid the cactus garden on the left, not the kind of hazard one might find at home. For the 14th it might be better if you pack some binoculars in your bag, it’s huge, and if you are really unlucky you might get wet.
