A course to take your breath away The award-winning Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course was redesigned by the firm Cameron & Powell from an original by Mackenzie Ross built in 1936. The course has now been rebuilt from scratch to meet USGA specifications for greens and tees and has been transformed into a par 72 course. The Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course is a course of striking contrasts, all with a particular respect for the natural surroundings. Distinctive features of this course include the support walls of all the tees, which are made of local stone, and the century-old trees, almost all of which have been preserved. The first four holes, played within the Centenary Park of the Vidago Palace Hotel, anticipate the next 11, newly built in the Oura valley. The last three are played in the

upper part of the Centenary Park, and afford magnificent views to the neighboring hills and villages. Every hole is a challenge and each of the last nine is completely different from the one before, giving golfers the opportunity to deploy their full range of shots. New lifestyle facilities to elevate luxury golf experience at Terras da Comporta

Named as the ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ at the 2023 World Golf Awards, The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta enjoyed a memorable inaugural year, and the Portuguese venue is set to elevate its five-star luxury experience further from 2024 with the opening of a range of new lifestyle facilities. An impressive new eco-friendly clubhouse will be at the forefront of the amenities that Terras da Comporta will unveil as the development builds on its reputation for the high quality of services being offered on and off the fairways. Fitting seamlessly into the natural landscape, the clubhouse has been designed by AO-LX and is being built by Kōzōwood Industries. Work on the building will start in the coming months, with the interior decor being provided by Viterbo Interior Design. The par-71 layout – David McLay-Kidd’s first golf course in mainland Europe – has made headlines around the world since first opening for play last June – including being named as the ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ and ‘Europe’s Best New Golf Course’ at the 2023 World Golf Awards and being ranked ninth in Golf World’s influential list of the ‘Top 100 Courses in Continental Europe’. Players and members of the golf industry from the UK, Europe and beyond have lavished praise on the course since it launched and further accolades are set to follow with Terras da Comporta having released a new set of images of the course taken by up-and-coming golf photographer James Hogg. Hogg first visited Terras da Comporta a year ago and returned to reshoot the layout in November, capturing the layout and its surroundings in a glorious new light. Owned by Vanguard Properties, Portugal’s largest real estate developer who took ownership of the development in 2019, Terras da Comporta features two large developments: Torre, comprising 365 hectares of land and where a second course designed by Sergio Garcia is being built (set to follow in 2025), and Dunas, which occupies around 1,011 hectares. Quinta do Lago commits to new investment in sustainable golf course management Quinta do Lago has pledged to invest further in sustainable golf course management practices and projects as the leading Portuguese resort continues to work closely with the GEO Foundation to boost its environmental footprint. Located within the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve in the Algarve, Quinta do Lago has always made protecting nature one of its prime operational goals and has committed to further enhance its sustainable practices across its three 18-hole championship layouts – the South Course, North Course and Laranjal. Plans are in place for an upgraded irrigation system to be introduced across the site. In its final stages, the new technology will allow treated wastewater to be used across the entire resort to reduce water usage. Quinta do Lago will also introduce a new GPS spraying system, reducing chemical usage by up to 30 per cent through targeting only the specific locations on a hole which needs attention. In addition, the resort is also aiming to further

reduce its water consumption by replacing many grassed areas at Laranjal and the North Course with pine-bark chippings. The latest changes come as part of a wider sustainability plan in place at the venue. More than €1 million has been spent upgrading the electric buggy and company car fleet, while large parts of the course are being left unmaintained to create a safe habitat for animals to live and thrive. In 2022, Quinta do Lago had 75 per cent occupancy in its bird houses around the course, while occupancy was also high in its bug hotels and bat houses. Elsewhere, recycling and compost programs are in place while the resort is reducing its use of single-use plastics in the pro shop, and has inserted water fountains in the clubhouses. Quinta Farm – a development in which produce is grown on-site and supplied directly to the restaurants at Quinta do Lago – has seen the resort reduce the amount of produce delivered each week. An extension of the restaurant kitchen with chef’s being able to request specific ingredients needed to make

signature dishes, more than 50 different organic fruit, herbs, and vegetables, such as wild strawberries, golden beetroot have been grown so far. Last year, 4,785 kilos of organic produce were grown for use in Quinta do Lago’s restaurants and food outlets. Scott McLean, superintendent of Quinta do Lago, said: “Our unique positioning within 2,000 acres of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve brings us even closer to nature, and really helps reinforce the need to always look at better ways to implement sustainable practices. “On our three courses over the last few years we have really looked at how best to do just that, and we are excited to further improve our environmental credentials through everything we have got planned with the GEO Foundation for the rest of this year and beyond.” For more information on Quinta do Lago, visit: www.quintadolago.com

Santo da Serra hits new golfing heights after being named best in Portugal Clube de Golf Santo da Serra’s reputation in European golf has received a glowing endorsement after the spectacular Madeira venue was named as the best golf course in Portugal by users of Golfamore, Europe’s leading benefit card for golfers. Santo da Serra beat leading Lisbon layouts West Cliffs Golf Links and Praia D’El Rey to first place in Golfamore’s new poll of the top courses in Europe, which was voted for by a network of 100,000 players. The renowned 27-hole venue also claimed the leading honour in the category of the ‘Most Affordable Course in Portugal’ while, in a further boost for golf in Madeira, Palheiro Golf won the award for the ‘Best Hospitality in Portugal’. The double accolade is fresh recognition for Santo da Serra’s decision to undertake a €2.5m course upgrade in 2022 to improve the playing experience for members and guests, which saw the number of rounds played in 2023 rise by up to 27 per cent compared to the previous year.

Ricardo Vieira, sales and marketing manager at Clube de Golf Santo da Serra, said: “To be voted as the best course in Portugal is fantastic news and something that everyone at the club is very proud of. “We have made some significant changes and investment over the last few years to improve the golf course customer experience that we offer, and an award of this nature is deserved recognition for all the hard work that has taken place.” Golfamore – which is based in Sweden – enjoyed a record-breaking season in 2023, with more than 265,000 rounds of golf played across 1,300-plus courses in Europe. After a round is completed, players are asked to rate both the course and the golf club’s facilities and customer service, with venues eligible to be nominated for an award if they receive at least 50 votes and a rating of at least four (out of five.) Anders Carlén, CEO of Golfamore, said: “The award gives clubs the opportunity to be recognised for their hard work and it also

The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta makes it a double at the World Golf Awards The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta has announced its place on the global stage in style after being crowned as the ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ and ‘Europe’s Best New Golf Course’ at the World Golf Awards 2023. The par-71 layout near Lisbon claimed the prestigious accolades less than five months after its soft opening, with Terras da Comporta director of golf Rodrigo Ulrich on hand to receive the awards when the winners were unveiled at the prize-giving ceremony in Abu Dhabi on Monday evening. (October 23) With the event rewarding excellence in the golf tourism market, Terras da Comporta’s success is significant recognition for Europe’s most talked-about new design projects. The ceremony brought together industry leaders from more than 65 nations across Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, Latin America, North America and Oceania. UIrich said: “We’ve been very excited about this project for many years. It’s incredibly satisfying to be finally open for play, and to see so many golfers enjoying what is a spectacular course, both in terms of its location and its design”. “It’s a great thrill and honour to receive two such respected awards, which are hopefully the first of many, because the course is going to get even better as it settles and matures.

However, Vanguard Properties, the owners of Terras da Comporta, are optimistic about what the future holds and Portugal’s largest real estate developer has exciting plans for the site. “The project may have a long history, but this is just the beginning”, said José Cardoso Botelho, CEO of Vanguard Properties. “Golfers

will travel from far and wide to come and play here. It has put Terras da Comporta firmly on the map as a new golf destination, but there’s more to come – much more”. Quinta da Marinha enjoys golf ranking boost thanks to new investment One of Portugal’s most popular golf destinations is officially better than ever, with Onyria Quinta da Marinha climbing into the top 30 of National Club Golfer magazine’s list of the ‘Top 100 Golf Resorts in Continental Europe’. The latest edition of the publication’s respected ranking has placed the resort in Cascais, near Lisbon, at number 27 – a rise of seven places. Such recognition vindicates a period of extensive investment and improvement across the acclaimed golf and lifestyle venue, headlined by a stunning new clubhouse overlooking the third hole. As well as cold drinks awaiting golfers after a round, the sleek, modern facility serves a wide range of fresh food and houses a well-equipped pro shop. Quinta da Marinha’s driving range was also upgraded in 2020, introducing a second putting green and new bunker practice area to complement the existing 32-bay facility and putting greens. The new-look range employs Trackman and swing analysis technology to provide golfers with detailed information about every practice stroke before they head out onto the course. However, National Club Golfer’s list not only takes into account the quality of golf on offer but also all off-course amenities and accommodation. Perhaps the biggest change across the resort was the opening of the

One year later, the resort announced the completion of a €1.5m refurbishment of its 27 holiday villas. Palácio Estoril A hotel where history is made In the Palácio Estoril Hotel you travel back in time, but on a journey that also continues in the present and into the future. Sir Henry Cotton: The Man Behind the Vision Sir Henry Cotton was a three times British Open Champion, even winning the competition with an extraordinary 65 in 1934 - which resulted in Dunlop honouring him with his own ball... the ‘65’. Most at home in the Algarve, with the great all year round climate - particularly during Autumn and Winter when many of the UK courses were slightly inclement to say the least, Sir Henry was determined to follow his vision of creating a world of year-round golf... and golfers the world over are mighty pleased that he did. The Course Today A major revitalisation project has recently completely transformed both the hotel and the golf course. Prestigious events such as the Daily Telegraph Seniors’ Match Play event (2001), the National Finals of the Audi Corp, together with major international and charity competitions - such as the Sir Henry Cotton Charity Classic - together with the Portuguese Open (1998 / 1999/ 2000 / 2004 / 2006) have all been hosted at the course. Unusual Characteristics of a World Famous Course The course itself is characterised by an unusual grouping of Par 5s, with four

of the five arranged together in pairs in the beginning and end of the back nine producing a Par 38 as opposed to 35. As you turn home towards the 18th, the magnificent building of the hotel acts as a backdrop to the green and is framed by an amphitheatre of trees - a superb spectator setting. Drive short of the drainage ditch, position the second shot to avoid the bunkers guarding the putting surface... and take into account the pin position on one of the three tiers - and you could well finish with a highly commendable par. Of the Par 3s, the most memorable is the 13th - voted one of the best 500 holes in the world. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tee, whilst the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of dangerous bunkers... great fun and a great challenge.

SALGADOS GOLF COURSE Salgados Golf course opened in September 1994 and is situated near the extensive Galé Beach between Pera and albufeira. The low lying wetlands of the landscape have been skilfully used in the layout wich incorporates 14 water hazards. To compensate for the dauting water hazards, Salgados has been designed to have only semi-rough for general play and the overall lenght has been restricted to 6140 metres from the championship tees. It is a conventional par 72 course with four par 3 holes and four par 5 holes. The first nine are laid out in a roughly anti-clokwise loop starting and ending close to the clubhouse.

One of the toughest holes is the 415 metre par 4 7th, which runs along the sea-side with a narrow Fairway between large dunes. Among the back nine, only the 180 metre par 3 17th is devoid of water hazards, but on five of the remaining holes players will be able to sacrifice distance for accuracy off the tee and still have opportunities to score pars. The exceptions are the 390 metre par 4 10th, and the unusual sequence of two links-type par 5s – the 14th which measures 490 metres and the 15th at 545 metres. These present a tough test of golfing ability before the relatively benign three hole home stretch.

Designed by true golfing legend, Arnold Palmer, there is absolutely no doubt that it has lived up to that lofty billing. This is one of the golf courses in Vilamoura, Portugal, considered to be one of the best and most challenging in Europe, and features an exceptional driving range and a putting green of some 2,500 m2. All of this has made it the obvious venue of choice for many of the top international tournaments to visit Portugal in recent times. Indeed, it has served as the host venue to the Portugal Masters on every occasion since 2007 until 2022, while the World Cup Championship was staged there in 2005. The Par-72 Championship layout, measuring

6.651 meters (7,273 yards) from the Palmer tees, incorporates and has ensured the preservation of natural wetlands on-site, as well as the typical vegetation of carob, olive and almond trees. A significant proportion of Dom Pedro Victoria’s acreage is occupied by lakes, forming hazards to be avoided but which also have a strategic purpose in providing reservoirs for irrigation. The back nine holes feature a very different, wider scenery. The #10-hole fairway is framed by two holm trees and is free of bunkers on the landing area which should provide a comfortable start of the back nine loop. Benamor Golf is a superb 18 hole Golf Course located on the South of Portugal, Algarve, just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira. In this course you can really see the style of Robert Trent Jones in the elevated greens and tees, with many bunkers in play and, as expected, some water hazards. Every hole is different, you will have to use all the clubs in the bag and play with strategy to make a good score. Some of the holes you won’t forget are: Hole 3, Par 4, it is one of the most famous holes of the Portuguese Golf, with view to the Atlantic Ocean, its picture was used for many years to promote “Golf in Portugal” abroad. Hole 4, Par 3, played over a natural ravine to a quite demanding Green. Hole 13, Par 3, you play over a big lake to an elevated green well protected with 4 bunkers. PALHEIRO GOLF Palheiro Golf was inaugurated in 1993, and this year we celebrate our 30th anniversary. The course was designed by Cabell B. Robinson within the property of a beautiful 200-year-old country estate overlooking Funchal, where the natural surroundings provide truly spectacular ocean views. SANTO DA SERRA GOLF Looking over the bay of Machico, where the Portuguese navigators first landed Madeira Island, lies the Santo da Serra Golf Club. Its original course, built in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones who created a completely new and spectacular 27hole golf course in one of the most beautiful landscapes that nature may offer. Golf and nature live in perfect harmony with sport and environment. Competition and pleasure gratify the passion of those who play at Santo da Serra. The 2nd and 4th holes of the Machico Course remain unforgettable in the memories of

those who play there. The Machico and the Desertas courses are the ones that are usually played on the Madeira Island Open, while the Serras Course maintains the same level. With four optional tees at each hole, the player may choose either a simple relaxing game or to a more challenging test. Boasting excellent quality fairways and greens with meticulous care given to the course conditions, Santo da Serra Golf used to host the annual Madeira Island Open on the European Tour. PORTO SANTO GOLFE Porto Santo Golfe is a 27 hole golf club on the scenic island of Porto Santo in Madeira, Portugal. It has 2 different golf courses, 18 holes in our championship course and 9 par 3 holes in our academy course. It opened on October 1st, 2004, and was designed by the Spanish 5-time major winner, Severiano Ballesteros. The Championship course has 7,041 yard, par 72 layout features spectacular views, particularly on the back nine, as holes 13, 14 and 15 run alongside the rugged coastline. The signature hole is the par 3 13th, which

measures 200 yards and requires a shot over a gorge to reach the cliff-top green. In addition to the Championship course, we have the Academy course which is great for beginners or for practise irons shots. There are also tennis facilities on-site. Porto Santo Golfe was a venue for the Madeira Islands Open between 2009 and 2012 on the European Tour.
