The Old Course in Vilamoura has long been a cornerstone of the Algarve’s golfing heritage. As the second oldest course in the region, affectionately known as the “Grande Dame,” it boasts a legacy spanning over 50 years, attracting golfers from around the world. Under the new management of DETAILS, a company wholly owned by Arrow Global, the course underwent substantial renovations in 2024, including enhancements to its bunkers, tees, and greens. Sustainability remains a central focus, with initiatives such as reusing biodegradable materials from tree maintenance and transforming branches and pine trunks into wood chips for non-playable and landscaped areas. These measures aim to reduce water and fertilizer usage, while minimizing maintenance efforts. Furthermore, old concrete blocks have been repurposed to create new pathways. The course also partnered with How Many Strokes to replace paper with digital handicap
conversion tables, improving operational efficiency and reducing paper consumption. As part of its commitment to innovation, the Old Course is the only golf course in the Algarve to feature Trackman’s cutting-edge technology on its driving range. This globally renowned ball tracking system enhances practice sessions, coaching, club fitting, and simulator golf, bringing a new level of precision and insight to players. The course will also be integrated into Trackman’s Virtual Golf platform, allowing golfers to experience its fairways virtually, both indoors and on the driving range, through state-of-the-art graphics.
The clubhouse has also undergone extensive renovations, with significant upgrades to the facilities, including the Pro Shop, locker rooms, exterior areas, and restaurant spaces. The menu has also been improved, enhancing the overall dining experience. These renovations further elevate the exclusive atmosphere of

Respect for the traditions of golf and the natural environment were the inspiration behind the layout of the Espiche Golf course in Lagos, Algarve, and the result has been one that offers a true challenge for golfers of all levels
Set within unspoilt undulating countryside, the greens and fairways of Espiche Golf course have been carefully placed to balance the dual demands of the golfer and the environment, with indigenous planting throughout creating a beautiful backdrop and some challenging obstacles.
The golf course requires careful thought along the 5862 metres (6411) yards from the back tees and requires a deft touch on the short game. Bunkers guard most greens while the greens themselves are large and undulating, demanding a soft hand with the putter. Espiche Golf course in Lagos is a shotmaker’s course, where each hole poses a new challenge thanks to the variety of the layout. The par five 1st, dropping some 80 feet from the tee before rising back to the same height at the green, gives golfers an insight into the style of golf at Espiche Golf course. The 3rd
provides the sternest test on the front nine at 409 meters uphill all the way, before the short 7th and 8th offer birdie opportunities.
The par five 10th is one of the finest in all the Algarve golf courses, and challenges golfers to negotiate the progressively tighter fairway as they approach the green.
Golfers are pushed to take risks with their game at Espiche Golf course, with rich rewards for those who make the most of their golfing skills and who best judge the course.
The three founding members were visionary entrepreneurs who visited the Algarve over 20 years ago to look at investment opportunities.
When they saw the site at Bago de Uva they
instantly envisaged the opportunity to create a course that would be one of its kind in Portugal, a naturally landscaped course nestled into the landscape. They took their concept to South African golf course architect Peter Sauerman who designed the course and with the backing and support of a small group of investors and a devoted handful of builders, their lovingly built and landscaped the design to sympathetically integrate into the surrounding scenery. Today, Espiche Golf is a sustainable golf course in Faro District, and this place is a reference of golf in Portugal for many tourists and locals. Their dream is now a reality for you to enjoy.

The first 18 hole course of its kind to be built in the Algarve, the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course started a golfing movement that is, today, famous the world over. Designed and completed in 1966 by the great Sir Henry Cotton, the course stands as a shining example to golfing architecture and one man’s passion for the great game of golf.
Whether the former championship golfer had any inkling of the mark he was laying down when he first began implementing his vision upon the Algarve paddy fields from which his course sprung, we don’t know... what we do know is the staggering extent of the legacy that he created.
A Stunning Transformation in the Southern Algarve
First he introduced thousands of trees and shrubs, completely transforming the landscape into a vegetation rich, lush land, perfect for playing the game of golf. From this initial build, there quickly sprang another 30 courses across the region... with plenty more to come. As the towering pines and eucalyptus trees reached maturity, the course was given a definitive character that remains unmatched across the entire penipnsular of the Algarve.
Sir Henry Cotton: The Man Behind the Vision Sir Henry Cotton was a three times British Open Champion, even winning the competition with an extraordinary 65 in 1934 - which resulted in Dunlop honouring him with his own ball... the ‘65’. Most at home in the Algarve, with the great all year round climate - particularly during Autumn and Winter when many of the UK courses were slightly inclement to say the least, Sir Henry was determined to follow his vision of creating a world of year-round golf... and golfers the world over are mighty pleased that he did.
The Course Today
A major revitalisation project has recently completely transformed both the hotel and the golf course. Prestigious events such as the Daily Telegraph Seniors’ Match Play event (2001), the National Finals of the Audi Corp, together with major international and charity competitions - such as the Sir Henry Cotton Charity Classic - together with the Portuguese Open (1998 / 1999/ 2000 / 2004 / 2006) have all been hosted at the course.
Unusual Characteristics of a World Famous Course
The course itself is characterised by an unusual grouping of Par 5s, with four
of the five arranged together in pairs in the beginning and end of the back nineproducing a Par 38 as opposed to 35. As you turn home towards the 18th, the magnificent building of the hotel acts as a backdrop to the green and is framed by an amphitheatre of trees - a superb spectator setting. Drive short of the drainage ditch, position the second shot to avoid the bunkers guarding the putting surface... and take into account the pin position on one of the three tiers - and you could well finish with a highly commendable par.
Of the Par 3s, the most memorable is the 13th - voted one of the best 500 holes in the world. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tee, whilst the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of dangerous bunkers... great fun and a great challenge.

Its various water features, both lakes and watercourses that are spread throughout the entire course, demand accuracy and test from all golfers, and the rich topsoil has been skillfully landscaped and planted with mature palm trees, affording a lush, ornamental setting like an extensive oasis.

The Ocean Golf Course features undulating fairways which run alongside nature reserve, before leading gently down to the shores of the Atlantic.

Established as one of the world’s most popular golf destinations, the Algarve still manages to move with the times. Over the years, golf courses have continued to evolve. Whilst, in the past, architects may have prioritised a challenging game, we are now seeing a new generation of golf courses that also put emphasis on sustainability. One such course is that of Ombria, the new luxury golf resort in the Algarve. Whilst the development boasts an abundance of ecofriendly features, the project team has carved a golf course that is interwoven with the native species. Key design considerations addressed by Ombria included minimal turf grass surface areas, restoration and integration of the native river landscapes, conservation of the surrounding woodlands for nature and recreation and a highly efficient irrigation system and energy-efficient pump set to cope with the steep terrain. Protection of natural native habitat, cultural remnants of ancient irrigation systems,
water mills, limestone kilns, ancient bridges and stone walling all contribute to the strong sense of place and authentic visitor experience Ombria aimed to deliver. As a result, the course was recognised with a GEO Foundation certification which is the international benchmark of a responsible golf course; demanding the highest standards of sustainability across six key areas - nature, water, energy, supply chain, pollution control and community.

And an exciting challenge is almost guaranteed! Ombria’s 18-hole golf course is a 5 800 metre, par 71, boasting two 9-hole loops that are set in quite different terrains. The front nine are laid in the base of two untouched landscape banks with a ‘wall to wall’ design and very well-defined grass limits that create an ever-changing look throughout the seasons. Magnificent holm trees, preserved inside the playing areas, are an integral part in the course strategy and work as hazards.
The #1 tee welcomes the player with stunning views down the valley, this short part 5 offers a comfortable tee shot for all levels of golfers. Presenting arguably the most challenging par
5, however, is the #2 hole. With a length of 518 meters, slight double dog-leg, it invites players to a gamble with the stream several times whilst the preserved old rock noria may block the view of the approach shot. The front nine loop ends with a true championship par 4 sandwiched between a lake on the left and the stream on the right that will reward players with picturesque views of the surrounding nature.
The back nine holes feature a very different, wider scenery. The #10-hole fairway is framed by two holm trees and is free of bunkers on the landing area which should provide a comfortable start of the back nine loop. Moving along the remaining holes of the back nine, golfers can expect different challenges that require finesse and know-how. Afterwards, players may wish to visit the onsite Clubhouse which was built into the castle-like walls of an existing ruin. Built to the highest specifications, the North Course was totally redesigned in 2014 by renowned architect Beau Welling, in conjunction with former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley.
While many modern-day developments tend to focus on length, Welling and McGinley were keen to design a golfing experience where accuracy and course management are the key factors, and a course that is playable and fun for golfers of all abilities. All the greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and drainage systems and cart paths have been re-built using innovative technology. Four sets of tees have been introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels. Golfers are challenged by a combination of undulating
greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards.
A low-cut Bermuda grass approach has been introduced around greens to create recovery shot options, therefore encouraging all levels of play. Through the introduction of seasonal rough grass and the planting of specimen trees, the aesthetics and environmental impact of the par-72 course has significantly improved. The renovation has allowed for water recycling, solar energy while the grassy areas will encourage new ecosystems.

The South Course is the crown jewel of Quinta do Lago. Designed in 1974 by William Mitchell, who introduced American-standard greens, tees and bunkers to the Algarve. The course was renovated in 2020 – with a €7 million investement.

The San Lorenzo Golf Course was opened in 1988 and takes advantage of wonderful topography on the Quinta do Lago estate, winding its way gently over undulating pine woodland. The 18 holes lie in the unspoilt South east corner of Quinta do Lago, bordering the Ria Formosa Estuary and salt water lagoons.
The course was designed by the American golf architect Joseph Lee and the beautiful Bermuda grass fairways provide perfect playing conditions.
The San Lorenzo Golf Course is laid out in a figure of eight and at the heart lies the San Lorenzo Clubhouse with a golf pro shop; comfortable changing facilities; welcoming bar and restaurant.
The fifth, the shortest hole on the San Lorenzo Golf Course, open up a magnificent vista with the backdrop of golden beaches and the Atlantic Ocean. Drama begins to unfold at the sixth hole where the San Lorenzo Golf Course borders the estuary and great demands are put on accuracy.
The eighth hole turns inland and is without a doubt one of the most spectacular par 5s, bordering the largest of the inland lakes and forcing the third shot to carry water to a tight
but beautifully positioned green. With the lake to your right, the tendency is to favour the left side; however bunkers and encroaching pines lie and wait on this side.
It is difficult to describe the breathtaking finale that awaits you at the eighteenth hole. Here without a doubt is one of the finest finishes in golf that you will ever experience, and has become world renowned. There is no escape from the water here and the prefect drive merely lessens the challenge of a shot
across water left and right, back and front to a tiny targeted green.

Benamor Golf is a superb 18 hole Golf Course located on the South of Portugal, Algarve, just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira. In the nearby foothills of Barrocal, you will enjoy some of the best mountain and sea views the Algarve has to offer. But maybe most enjoyable of all, are the peaceful surroundings of a construction free resort. Possibly the only one on the Algarve.
The decision to build a golf course, on the land of Quinta de Benamor, in Tavira, Algarve, was made in 1986. The Owning Martins Dias family invited the late Sir Henry Cotton to make a concept design for an 18-hole course. Sir Henry Cotton was inspired by the beautiful old church next to the site of the Clubhouse and by the spectacular location.
The final result is a delightful par 71 golf course of 5,500 metres (6,100 yards), which offers a pleasant playing experience, to players of all standards. The course is undulating but not hilly. The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning. The indigenous olive, cork, carob, fig and almond trees, many centuries old, feature aesthetically and in playing terms. Water hazards and sand bunkers are located to test the strategy and striking ability of the player.
The Penn A4 greens and tees are simply superb. The fairways of Bermuda Sahara and cool-season grasses, provide good lies for wood and iron shots.
The Benamor Golf Driving Range offers a complete practice facility on a nice and pleasant natural setting whether you are an experienced player or total beginner. It has 16 mats at front end of Driving Range and practice grass at top end with target flags and distance markers.
A Chipping and Pitching green is also located
at top end with a bunker to practice from. For players who wish to concentrate on their putting we have a lovely 9 hole Putting Green situated between Clubhouse and Driving Range.

Castro Marim occupies an elevated position, with magnificent views to the north, towards the ridge of hills which separates the Algarve from the province of the Alentejo. To the east, the mighty Guadiana forms the border with neighboring Spain, while the shimmering Atlantic may be seen to the south.

Situated in a secluded coastal setting on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, The Dunas Course is the first of two 18-hole championship layouts that is being built at Terras da Comporta.
Created over 84 hectares of natural, sandy terrain by acclaimed golf architect McLayKidd, the par-71 course has been built using the highest sustainable practices and is quickly becoming one of Europe’s mustplay golfing venues after being officially inaugurated in October 2023. As with so many of McLay-Kidd’s more
recent creations – he admits that he had a rethink about his design philosophy in 2009 after realising that his first courses were too hard for the average golfer – strategy and playability are the keys, especially from the tee. Lower handicappers may well prefer to take on the tiger lines which, executed properly, will leave the best chance for birdie but the architect has also been keen to offer plenty of room on the fairways so that higher-handicap players can gain just as much pleasure and satisfaction from their course experience.

This course, opened in 1929, was refurbished and extended to 27 holes in 1936, by McKenzie Ross. Overlooking Estoril and the sea, the 5200 meter long course is set amongst eucalyptus, mimosas and pine trees, giving a uniquely colorful touch that demands excellent tactics, and challenges in accuracy rather than distance.

The Quinta da Marinha Golf Course, in Cascais, has 18 holes with 5.870 meters of pure nature and big challenges. This par 71, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, offers fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra Mountains.
In this course you can really see the style of Robert Trent Jones in the elevated greens and tees, with many bunkers in play and, as expected, some water hazards. Every hole is different, you will have to use all the clubs in the bag and play with strategy to make a good score. Some of the holes you won’t forget are: Hole 3, Par 4, it is one of the most famous holes of the Portuguese Golf, with view to the Atlantic Ocean, its picture was used for many years to promote “Golf in Portugal” abroad. Hole 4, Par 3, played over a natural ravine to a quite demanding Green. Hole 13, Par 3, you play over a big lake to an elevated green well protected with 4 bunkers. Hole 18, a beautiful Par 5, with two lakes, all shots have to be well
thought to make sure you are not penalized by the water.
Quinta da Marinha has been host to many high profile professional competitions, such as the Ladies Masters in 1988, won by South African player Laurette Maritz-Atkins. In 2002, the PGA Seniors Tour Championship was won by Denis Durnian after a dramatic suddendeath play-off with the former Ryder Cup star, Eamonn Darcy. And in 2007, the Challenge Tour, was won by Ross McGowan, shooting 66 to beat former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker who was leading the after round three. A stylish new clubhouse overlooks hole nr. 3, and is the perfect place to drink, a well deserved, beer after a round of golf.

Designed by former European Tour star
Peter Townsend, in collaboration with European Golf Design, Ribagolfe Lakes (former Ribagolfe I) was designed to be a championship course of the highest standard. The course is set in a beautiful natural cork oak forest and, despite its 6,700 metres length, the par-72 layout is enjoyable to walk, being slightly undulating with small valleys. With five tees per hole, it is suitable for the majority of players and offers the opportunity to score well providing you can negotiate the wide, tricky greens and avoid the well-placed bunkers and numerous water hazards, most notably on the risk-and-reward par-four 14th hole.
Ribagolfe Oaks
A shorter test than Ribagolfe Lakes but still measuring more than 6,800 yards, Ribagolfe Oaks (formerly called Ribagolfe II) was designed by former Ryder Cup player Michael King in collaboration with European Tour Design.
Blessed with the same indigenous cork oak canvas, King has crafted a more forgiving but equally appealing golf course with wider fairways and landing areas. The huge, moderately contoured greens, however, provide a stiff test if you’re to score well here. All this is in a perfect environment for golf practice, surrounded by nothing but nature where you can only hear the chirping of the birds.

The Royal Óbidos Scenic Resort is situated in a region with several UNESCO World Heritage sites, national monuments, and an Atlantic coast of unparalleled natural beauty, making the region a highly appreciated holiday destination for both Portuguese and foreigners.
Designed to integrate subtly with the natural surroundings, taking advantage of the undulating terrain, this 6,400-meter course attracts golfers of all levels.
The first hole, a generous right-handed dogleg, heads north, setting up a spectacular combination of holes overlooking the Lagoa de Óbidos. The feature hole of the front nine is the 3rd, a 144m Par 3 off the yellow tees to an island green, with the stunning Óbidos lagoon in the background. The second nine holes overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Six of the holes meander between an intricate ecosystem of lakes interconnected by cascading streams.
The highlight of the back nine is the 18th, a 490m Par 5 off the yellow tees, with a panoramic view over the back nine, the clubhouse, and the ocean beyond.
The Clubhouse offers varied cuisine in The Legend - Golf Restaurant Clubhouse, two bars, a reception, a golf shop, and a collection area. West cliffs was designed by the world renowned golf course designer Cynthia Dye from Dye Design
The golf course design process required a long term, careful study of the site conditions, characteristics and restrictions. The Dye team worked closely with the local government’s
planning and engineering departments as well as several concerned national ministries. The design evolved through many reviews and exhaustive revisions to ensure a minimum disturbance of the environment and protection of the areas of existing drainage basins, dinosaur fossils and heritage pine trees.
The beauty and challenge of this rare ocean side links course grows with each passing hole and although thrilling and dramatic it is available to all levels of golfers.

From Porto: Take the A4 towards PortoVila Real. Exit No. 15 at Km 57 on the A4 in the direction of Amarante Oeste/ Celorico de Basto. Go straight ahead at the roundabout in the direction of Celorico de Basto. After 800 metres turn right towards Fregim/Livração/Amarante. After 100 metres turn left towards Fregim. After 300 metres you will come to a roundabout where you should go straight ahead. Follow the main road for 2.7 kilometres until you see the “Golf Course” sign. Turn left and look for a car park.

An 18-hole par 71 course of 6005 meters, Ponte de Lima Golf Club was inaugurated on the 15th of September 1995. Located on the rural area of Ponte de Lima, the golf course is a mix between level and hilly, the first nine holes being hilly and the second nine level. These unique characteristics in the northern region delight players with the fantastic views over the Lima valley as well as having contact with the typical Minho countryside. In the middle of the course, between holes 1, 10, 9, 18, is situated the Clubhouse where various services, such as reception, golf shop, hire of equipment, restaurant, bar, terrace,
saunas, pool, television room and three padel courts, are available.

The award-winning Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course was redesigned by the firm Cameron & Powell from an original by Mackenzie Ross built in 1936. The course has now been rebuilt from scratch to meet USGA specifications for greens and tees and has been transformed into a par 72 course.
The Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course is a course of striking contrasts, all with a particular respect for the natural surroundings. Distinctive features of this course include the support walls of all the tees, which are made of local stone, and the century-old trees, almost all of which have been preserved.
The first four holes, played within the Centenary Park of the Vidago Palace Hotel, anticipate the next 11, newly built in the Oura valley. The last three are played in the upper part of the Centenary Park, and afford
magnificent views to the neighboring hills and villages. Every hole is a challenge and each of the last nine is completely different from the one before, giving golfers the opportunity to deploy their full range of shots.
The comprehensive nature of the Vidago Palace offering has been demonstrated by it hosting the Portuguese Senior Open in 2014 –part of the European Senior Tour – as well the Bonallack and Patsy Hankins Trophies in 2016, the international amateur match between Europe and Asia- Pacific.
