Sotogrande Shines in Golf Digest’s Top 100

The new Links Course, the flagship course, is the only links course in the region. Declared “Spain’s Best Golf Course” in the 2023 World Golf Awards, it is an 18 hole, Par 72 course and inaugurated in 1992. In 2021 new ownership had a vision to transform Alcaidesa into a high end destination and left this unique project in the hands of Kurtis Bowman who is responsible for designing a few of the legendary Jack Nicklaus golf signature courses. The orography of the land is formed by gentle slopes descending towards the sea, finishing on a beautiful beach, creating a front of nearly 2 km. This allows for the majority of the holes to run alongside the
beach. The difficulty of the course lies mainly in the condition of the prevailing winds in the area. One of the special features of the course which most impresses visitors is its spectacular views over the Mediterranean, Gibraltar’s rock and Africa. The total distance is 5,931m.

The second golf course of this resort, the Heathland Course, consists of 18 holes par 72, designed by the renowned former Ryder Cup player and author of numerous internationally renowned layouts, Dave Thomas. This course offers a variety of natural scenery ranging from the plateau area (holes 1 to 5, 17 and 18) where the course is similar to a heathland, with wide fairways and outstanding views of the Mediterranean, to the valley area, where the holes meander along the valley and incorporate several water hazards.
As well as carrying out redesign work to enhance the layout, including the repositioning of the 18th tee, other upgrades on the course will include levelling the 1st and 11th fairways to improve the playability of the course; cleaning and refurbishing the lakes and bridges on the eighth and ninth holes; and repairing and resurfacing all the buggy paths.

La Reserva Club sits atop one of Sotogrande’s highest peaks, with sweeping views down over the Mediterranean. The course was opened in 2003, and since its inception has played host to a number of world renowned golf tournaments, most notably the Ladies European Tour’s recent Aramco Team Series. The newest championship course in Sotogrande®, this 18-hole layout measures over 7,400 yards off the back tees and was designed by famous American architect and golf course designer Cabell B. Robinson.
Carved into the hillside, the views are either expansive, overlooking Sotogrande® and its shoreline, or upward onto the trees of the Gran Reserva, Sotogrande’s highest point. REAL CLUB VALDERRAMA
Real Club Valderrama is located in Sotogrande, Andalucia, the largest and southern-most region of Spain. A few miles north of Gibraltar, it is approximately one hour’s drive from Malaga International Airport.Valderrama is a private Members’ club with a limited number of starting times offered for visitors. The climate is ideal for year-round golf.
Valderrama has been consistently ranked as number 1 in Continental Europe since the late 80’s and has been included in the Top 100 in the World since 1999. The Par 71 Championship Course measures 6356 meters from the professional tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course - nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot. The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course architects, and was originally known as Las Aves (Sotogrande New). In 1984, Mr. Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, acquired the golf course and committed to bringing the course to an extraordinary level, never seen before in Europe. Robert Trent Jones willingly agreed to come back and redesign his original layout
of ten years earlier. Together the two men spent many hours walking around the course and discussing where and how improvements should be made.
The course was renamed Valderrama, after the ancient estate on which the land is situated. The pair shared a common aim: to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike, and would bring out the best golf that is in him. Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989.
No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved such recognition. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 2009. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted
golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain.
The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director. “I found everything perfect” he said. “It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition”
Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.
On the fifteenth the view even stretches as
far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa.
The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular.

Dona Julia is a new 18 hole, par 71 layout designed by the famous designer Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is set within a huge new development by Casares in the West of the Costa del Sol.
The front seven holes go up into the hills with fantastic views of the sea (particularly from the highest part of the course on the 8th tee). Then the back 11 proceed to come down the hill giving a different perspective entirely from the front 7 holes.
What you notice about Dona Julia is the overall quality of the course, everything is just how it should be and the fairways are spotless.
The greens likewise and they are huge. In all an excellent course for the money and sure to be a firm favourite because although it is tough it is also fair so should suit all levels of golfer. After your game, wander into the Clubhouse bar to relax and enjoy drinks and food on the sunny terrace.
Toughest hole: 10th. Par 4, 405 metres. Stroke index 1 hole and rightly so. Tee off over a valley to a small fairway that runs from left to right in front of you. If you do mange to find the fairway, you have a long second to the large green with water to the right, slicers beware!

The immaculate contoured greens are generous in size but the fairways are slender on the first half of the course, where more precision is needed than on the second half. The strategically placed bunkers contain white marble chips; most fairways are sown with Bermuda whilst the greens and tees have been sown with Penncross.

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels.
Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with

The design thinking behind Los Arqueros Golf was to lay out a course which closely followed the contours of the land and was in harmony with the natural setting. It is an idea, which Seve exploited to the maximum when designing the front and back nine holes, each with its own distinct personality. The result is a course which presents a challenge for the experienced golfer and is a real test of skills for beginners.
The course demands accurate play, especially on some of the tighter fairways where even big hitters may be advised to play a shorter iron or wood off the tee for greater precision. Los Arqueros Golf is unique and its design is very different from the majority of courses on the Costa del Sol.

REAL CLUB DE GOLF LAS BRISAS
The Real Club of Golf Las Brisas was founded by D. Jose Banus in 1968 with the name of “Golf Club Nueva Andalucía”; He would be his first President until 1981.
For his design he chose the American Robert Trent Jones, considered already then like one of the best designers of the world of golf courses. He had just built the Sotogrande field, and later Las Brisas would also design Los Naranjos and Valderrama. The tour of this Marbella club presents multiple water obstacles: there are ten artificial lakes fed by two streams. The greens, mostly elevated, are heavily protected by bunkers. The result of the work of Robert Trent Jones, which we continue to enjoy today, was truly remarkable and original, achieving a difficult and attractive course. It was also original in the lawn used: “Bermuda” on the fairways and “Pencross Bentgrass” on greens, unusual species in Europe in the sixties; The consequence of all this is a course that requires playing a precision golf. As opinion of great golf players we can reflect the one of Paul Azinger (USA):
“Las Brisas does not have a bad hole. In fact it’s one of the best courses I’ve ever played.” The original design, the Englishman Gerald Huggan was commissioned by D. José Banús to design the landscaping and the course’s arboretum. Gerald Huggan, a great specialist in subtropical plants, had just returned from Kenya where he had designed the Nairobi gardens. Here at Las Brisas we can enjoy his work and imagination, in a place where there are trees representing all the continents of the world: species from Africa like the Cape Chestnut and the Spiny Acacias; the Indian Laurel and the Mysore Ficus from Asia; Chorisia Speciosa from America; the Green Ash from Mexico; and the Blackwood and the Whistling Pine from Australia, together with numerous species of palms and Mediterranean trees which coexist in great harmony, turning our course into a veritable botanic garden.
During the following ten years our Club was open to the public, serving the needs of tourism in the area and playing host to numerous guests, with 44,000 players visiting the course in 1975. In 1981 the Banús Group sold the course to the businessmen Herman Sauer and Juan Romero who decided to transform the Club into a private Club; to do so, they formed the company Sociedad Campogolf, S.A., which holds the Clubs assets, and 1,320 shares were issued. The Club’s facilities and the golf course were improved. In 1983 the Spanish Open was again held at the Club, leading to a resounding sporting success. The Irishman, Eamon D’Arcy, won the Open with the Spaniard, Manuel Piñero, coming second. Both he and José María Cañizares managed to equal the course record. In 1983, and after a period of consolidation as a private Club, Herman Sauer resigned from the Chair, with elections being called at which D. Antonio Fortuny was voted in as Chairman. During the following years,
especially in 1985 and 1991, our Club became the focus of some of the most prestigious national and international competitions like Their Majesties the King and Queens’ International Cup, the Spanish Open, the Nations’ Cup and the World Cup. The Spanish Open held in 1987 was won brilliantly by Nick Faldo, followed by Severiano Ballesteros, only two strokes behind, with the latter beating the course record with 64 strokes in the Pro-Am played the day before the competition. Kyle Phillips renovated its design in 2015, through the remodelling of the course, this delightful walking venue has been redesigned to respect and improve on the best aspects of the original design, as well as modified to create a new course which will not only continue to bring pleasure to the members, but once again challenge the professional player. Upon the realization of the new practice facility improvements, Las Brisas will be able to offer its members a complete toplevel golf experience.

The first 9 holes were designed by Mr. Antonio García Garrido and the course soon became one of the favourites of a large number of golfers who decided to become members. The second 9 holes, inaugurated in November 1996, were designed by the club’s technical team. A recognized trajectory and reputation within the best golf courses in the area, and the good evaluation of players of any level, make our club a must-see on the Costa del Sol. The course offers players a challenging course in an environment with views of the
Mediterranean Sea and mountains covered by holm and oak trees. Also noteworthy is the club house building, with marked Andalusian architecture, an impressive 19th century farmhouse, surrounded by extensive gardens. Located in the incomparable beauty of the Andalusian mountains, Santa María Golf meanders through a valley following its contours and is surrounded by natural vegetation made up of pines, oaks, cork oaks, olive trees and a small stream that runs through much of the course.
The front nine is a more demanding challenge with three par 5 holes, while the inward half with three par 3 holes is more forgiving and has more recovery holes. There are four strategically placed lakes on the course, which come into play on holes 1, 3, 8, 9 and 11.

Cabopino Golf Marbella is located on the border between Marbella and Mijas Costa, opposite the charming little Cabopino Port. The Course was designed by Mr. Juan Ligués Creus, who´s layout presents spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding pine forest. The Course has three par 3´s, two par 5´s and the rest par 4´s. Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, 3rd hole would be the one to mention. The tee box perched on the side of the cliff presents you with a tee shot that has a drop of nearly 80 metres to the fairway, then you face an elevated green protected by a large bunker. Holes 13 and 15 are also attractive, with
streams and lakes. The tenth tee provides a magnificent view of the back nine and the Mediterranean Sea. Cabopino Golf allows all categories of handicap golfers to enjoy a day out. At the entrance to Cabopino Golf Marbella we find the excellent facilities of the Golf Academy and Driving Range. The Driving Range has a capacity for 30 players, with a depth of 200 metres and 160 metres wide, distance markers, bunkers and the natural layout amongst the pine forest make an interesting and challenging practice session. The Academy offers lessons for individual ladies and gentlemen, groups for children and corporate groups.

The third of Cabell B Robinson’s three courses at La Cala has captured the imagination of golfers since its opening in 2005, maturing seamlessly into the spectacular surroundings of the Sierra de Mijas. Wider fairways and larger greens makes this an enjoyable test for all, but bring your A-game on the toughest holes. Dissected by the Ojén, the fourth might just be the most demanding par four in Andalucía. And at 233 metres, the 14th is the longest par 3 in the region. Featuring five bridges and four tunnels in all, brace yourself for an unforgettable round of golf.

SANTANA GOLF
Santana Golf is an 18 Hole golf course par 72 of approximately. 6207 meters in length, set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland.
The course, sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson, is set in a former avocado plantation which provided a natural solution to many problems. The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Each hole has two championship tees and two tees for general play for both men and ladies - wide and well manicured putting greens surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, filled with sand produced from crushed marble. Buggy paths are provided throughout the course, beautifully integrated between the rows of fruit trees.
In spite of its previous use, the Avocado Tree or Persea Índica - as it is known by its original name - is not the only tree present here, as many other endemic species like eucalyptus, orange and lemon trees, cactus, pines, fig trees, olive and mango trees make up the varied vegetation of this beautiful enclave, together with a varied population of indigenous birds, with amongst others the calzada eagle. The cork oaks along the 5th hole deserve special mention, as they have been present here for more than 500 years.

The Courses
During the last decades Mijas Golf has become one of the most popular golf courses in Costa del Sol, known for the outstanding condition of their courses and the friendly atmosphere and excellent service provided to the clients.
Los Lagos and Los Olivos, are situated in the valley of Mijas, north of Fuengirola, only twenty minutes from the Málaga international airport and Marbella, and 3.5 kms. from the sea. Keeping the original design of Robert Trent Jones Sr., the Los Lagos course was totally refurbished in 2012, with Los Olivos set to be refurbushed this year.
The gentle outlines of Los Lagos course in contrast to the stunning appearance of our “Bridge-ball” cannot leave anybody indifferent; proving that it is possible to mix tradition and innovation on the same scenery. The signature of Robert Trent Jones Sr is one of the biggest guarantee seals that can be given in the world of golf. In Spain only six golf courses have his signature.

Maintenance
We attach great importance to the maintenance conditions of the course, which is why we have just carried out a comprehensive renovation. In this reform
we have renewed the irrigation network, the bunkers, the drainage and road network, as well as the entire grass surface.
The Clubhouse
The Clubhouse is an old Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse), and beside it, one can feel the continual buzz on the terraces of the Restaurant, where the variety of our clientele can be noticed; Mijas Golf has managed to mix, with success, the residents on the area with visitors from all over the world.
The Restaurant offers gastronomy typical of the area, that is, national as well as international cuisine, totaling a large selection of dishes. Our ample team of professional chefs of great experience can prepare authentic Malagenian and Mediterranean dishes, for which they have won prestige throughout their industry.
It is a perfect spot to enjoy the richness of the surrounding countryside around Mijas Golf as there is a comfortable large terrace. Also, there is a simple and agreeable menu of the day at an attractive price.

Mijas Golf, a prominent fixture among Malaga’s golf courses, has earned a reputation as one of the Costa del Sol’s most beloved destinations. Over the past decades, Mijas Golf has become synonymous with impeccably maintained courses, a welcoming ambiance, and exceptional service.
The resort boasts two distinct 18-hole layouts, both designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. Los Lagos, the older of the two, opened in 1976, followed by Los Olivos in 1984. Reflecting Jones’ design philosophy of “Difficult Par, Easy Bogey,” both courses feature minimal rough, strategic water hazards, and relatively flat terrain.
Los Lagos, spanning 52 hectares, is characterized by its expansive fairways and, as its name suggests, numerous lakes. Nine lakes, in fact, come into play on 11 of the 18 holes, creating natural obstacles that challenge golfers of all skill levels. Complementing the water hazards are strategically placed bunkers and a diverse collection of mature trees native to the region. The success of Los Lagos, coupled with favorable economic conditions, paved the way for a second course at Mijas Golf: Los Olivos, which opened in 1984. Spanning approximately 40 hectares, Los Olivos underwent a significant renovation in 2000/2001, overseen by Cabell Robinson, a former protégé of Robert Trent Jones Sr.
Los Olivos is distinguished by its smaller, more undulating greens, each carefully guarded by bunkers. The abundance of olive trees, strategically planted along the fairways, demands greater precision and accuracy from golfers, particularly off the tee.
Driving range
The driving range and Pg Academy have undergone a complete transformation. Featuring new grass, drainage, and irrigation systems, the range also boasts a fully renovated tee line, screen installations, and Trackman systems across the fairway. Golfers can choose to practice outdoors or in a covered area. With a length exceeding 300 meters, the driving range accommodates practice with any club. Various targets at different distances allow for diverse shot practice. Conveniently located adjacent to the starter, putting green, chipping green, and snack bar, the driving range also offers restroom facilities and the option to purchase refreshments.
