La Cala Resort hotel room upgrades planned
La Cala Resort has also announced plans for an extensive renovation of its 107 bedrooms over the next two coming winters to freshen things up, adapt the style to its new identity, and modernise its accommodation offering. By working one floor at a time, this exciting project will keep disruption to a minimum, with the hotel remaining open as the renovation team works through a striking redecoration and facelift programme that will create extra space and introduce more of the amenities that the 21st-century traveller now demands. The initial focus will see a transformation of the Classic and Superior rooms. The en-suite Deluxe Classic rooms feature a balcony or terrace, air conditioning and twin beds or a double bed. The modernisation will see
them fitted with brand new furniture and cupboards plus fresh décor and furnishings carefully chosen to tastefully reflect the Andalusian lifestyle and heritage. There will be easy-access USB sockets to keep even the most gadget-minded of guests charged up and ready, as well as new 55-inch SMART televisions so guests can enjoy their favorite streaming channels whilst away from home. Golfers will also welcome an addition of golf bag racks in the new closets. The larger, light and airy Deluxe Superior rooms, which feature bigger balconies and terraces, as well as a solarium on the top floor, will enjoy a similarly comprehensive makeover, with the addition of a large walk-in closet with ample storage space.
The first phase of the renovation work will take place over a three-month period from December 2024 to February 2025, with the hotel remaining fully open from December 26th, 2024 to January 6th, 2025 to accommodate those who wish to spend the post-Christmas and New Year period soaking up the sunshine on the Costa del Sol. The second phase will take place the following winter, with the hotel fully renovated by March 2026.
This switch of focus to the accommodation follows completion of an extensive five-year project to not only upgrade all three golf courses, but also enhance their sustainability and water efficiency by transitioning from bent grass greens to Bermuda and introducing the 20% more efficient Bermuda Tahoma 31 variety on some of the tee boxes. Campo Asia made the switch in 2019 and Campo Europa in 2020; now the upgrade has been completed on Campo America, too, with the course re-opening on September 2nd following two-and-a-half months of renovation works. In addition to the switch to Bermuda grass on the greens, several tee boxes have been widened and extended throughout the course, offering more playability options for all types of golfer.

La Hacienda Links shortlisted for three top honours at 2024 World Golf Awards
La Hacienda Links Golf Resort is chasing a notable hat-trick after being shortlisted for three of the leading accolades at the 2024 World Golf Awards.
The coveted honour of the ‘World’s Best Halfway House’ heads the list of awards that the 36-hole Spanish resort has been nominated for at this year’s awards, which will take place in Madeira from November 21-22. In addition, La Hacienda’s acclaimed Links course is in contention to be named as ‘Spain’s Best Golf Course’ for the second year in a row while the resort is also among the nominees in the prestigious category of ‘Europe’s Best Golf Venue’.

since opening last August, and offers players the opportunity to enjoy a spectacular seaside location while sampling a mouthwatering menu based on local Andalusian produce. Situated by the tenth hole of the Links course, Calma has been constructed using the best bioclimatic practices and sustainable materials with an almost zero carbon footprint. Sotogrande cements its position as Europe’s elite golf destination with latest Golf Digest World Top 100 Ranking

LA HACIENDA LINKS GOLF RESORT
Links Golf Course
The new Links Course, is our signature course, being the only links course in the region.
Declared “Spain’s Best Golf Course” in the 2023 World Golf Awards, it is an 18 hole, Par 72 course and inaugurated in 1992. In 2021 new ownership had a vision to transform Alcaidesa into a high end destination and left this unique project in the hands of Kurtis Bowman who is responsible for designing a few of the legendary Jack Nicklaus golf signature courses. The orography of the land is formed by gentle slopes descending towards the sea, finishing on a beautiful beach, creating a front of nearly 2 km. This allows for the majority of the holes to run alongside the
beach. The difficulty of the course lies mainly in the condition of the prevailing winds in the area. One of the special features of the course which most impresses visitors is its spectacular views over the Mediterranean, Gibraltar’s rock and Africa. The total distance is 5,931m.

Heathland Golf Course
The second golf course of this resort, the Heathland Course, consists of 18 holes par 72, designed by the renowned former Ryder Cup player and author of numerous internationally renowned layouts, Dave Thomas. This course offers a variety of natural scenery ranging from the plateau area (holes 1 to 5, 17 and 18) where the course is similar to a heathland, with wide fairways and outstanding views of the Mediterranean, to the valley area, where the holes meander along the valley and incorporate several water hazards.
Winner of the ‘Players’ Choice Award’ and the ‘Best Hospitality in Spain’ honours at the 2022 Golfhaftet Awards - the Heathland course is
set to benefit from a period of investment this winter and spring.
As well as carrying out redesign work to enhance the layout, including the repositioning of the 18th tee, other upgrades on the course will include levelling the 1st and 11th fairways to improve the playability of the course; cleaning and refurbishing the lakes and bridges on the eighth and ninth holes; and repairing and resurfacing all the buggy paths.

The recently renovated Almenara Golf is located within 5* SO/ Sotogrande Hotel, alongside the Los Alcornocales natural park, just five minutes from both Real Club Valderrama and La Reserva Club, in a luxurious residential area overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It is just 40 minutes from Marbella by car, and there are three international airports in close proximity: Gibraltar (20 minutes away), Malaga (60 minutes away) and Jerez (90 minutes away).
Almenara Golf, Sotogrande® has 27 holes created by the famous British designer, Dave Thomas. This is split into three nine-hole loops that have recently been remodelled by legendary local golfer, Manuel Piñero. The water is a protagonist in its design, thanks to two great lakes surrounded by cork oaks and olive trees – delivering an authentic Andalucian golf experience.
The three layouts, with views down to the Mediterranean and over the surrounding hills, represent a real challenge for golfers of all skill levels, with deep bunkers, water hazards, rolling hills, and winding fairways. With more than 300 days of sunshine each year, it has an ideal climate to play golf.

This picturesque 9-hole course runs between two lakes, with wide fairways nestled among pine trees.
Los Alcornoques
This 9-hole course flows among cork trees, with wide and winding fairways, next to a large lake that comes into play on holes 6, 7 and 8.
Los Pinos
9-hole course surrounded by pine trees, with narrower fairways than Lagos and Alcornoques, and a requirement on creative shot making. Its finishing hole is a challenging uphill par-3.

La Reserva Club sits atop one of Sotogrande’s highest peaks, with sweeping views down over the Mediterranean. The course was opened in 2003, and since its inception has played host to a number of world renowned golf tournaments, most notably the Ladies European Tour’s recent Aramco Team Series. The newest championship course in Sotogrande®, this 18-hole layout measures over 7,400 yards off the back tees and was designed by famous American architect and golf course designer Cabell B. Robinson.
Carved into the hillside, the views are either expansive, overlooking Sotogrande® and its shoreline, or upward onto the trees of the Gran Reserva, Sotogrande’s highest point. The Par 71 Championship Course measures 6356 meters from the professional tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course - nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot. The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course architects, and was originally known as Las Aves (Sotogrande New). In 1984, Mr. Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, acquired the golf course and committed to bringing the course to an extraordinary level, never seen before in Europe. Robert Trent Jones willingly agreed to come back and redesign his original layout
of ten years earlier. Together the two men spent many hours walking around the course and discussing where and how improvements should be made.
The course was renamed Valderrama, after the ancient estate on which the land is situated. The pair shared a common aim: to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike, and would bring out the best golf that is in him. Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989.
No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved such recognition. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 2009. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have hosted
golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain.
The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director. “I found everything perfect” he said. “It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition”
Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. In more recent times, Real Club Valderrama has been perpetuated through the hosting of eight iterations of the Andalucía Valderrama Masters, a tournament of considerable prestige within the domain of Spanish golf sanctioned by the European Tour. Furthermore, Valderrama proudly welcomed LIV Golf in June 2023, boasting some of the best players in the world.

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.
On the fifteenth the view even stretches as
far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Exquisitely decorated with marble and stucco, it also features a Thalaso Spa.
The 4th, 5th and 6th holes are known as AMEN CORNER, with a stroke index of 1, 7 and 3 respectively. An outstanding hole is the spectacular par 3 17th, stroke index 16. The wind force will affect your approach, you could play a 7 iron, a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, for this 108m shot. The views on the Africa and the Mediterranean are truly spectacular.

Dona Julia is a new 18 hole, par 71 layout designed by the famous designer Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is set within a huge new development by Casares in the West of the Costa del Sol.
The front seven holes go up into the hills with fantastic views of the sea (particularly from the highest part of the course on the 8th tee). Then the back 11 proceed to come down the hill giving a different perspective entirely from the front 7 holes.
What you notice about Dona Julia is the overall quality of the course, everything is just how it should be and the fairways are spotless.
The greens likewise and they are huge. In all an excellent course for the money and sure to be a firm favourite because although it is tough it is also fair so should suit all levels of golfer. After your game, wander into the Clubhouse bar to relax and enjoy drinks and food on the sunny terrace.
Toughest hole: 10th. Par 4, 405 metres. Stroke index 1 hole and rightly so. Tee off over a valley to a small fairway that runs from left to right in front of you. If you do mange to find the fairway, you have a long second to the large green with water to the right, slicers beware!

Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club is a magnificent 18 hole, par 71 course designed in 1991 by the legendary Severiano Ballesteros.

Los Arqueros Golf, a challenging 18 hole, par 71, inaugurated in 1991, has been designed by a man who is not only one of the world’s top professional golfers, but also a native of the country, Spain’s Severiano Ballesteros. He has shared his knowledge and put his name into the creation of almost 30 golf courses throughout the world.
The design thinking behind Los Arqueros Golf was to lay out a course which closely followed the contours of the land and was in harmony with the natural setting. It is an idea, which Seve exploited to the maximum when designing the front and back nine holes, each with its own distinct personality. The result is a course which presents a challenge for the experienced golfer and is a real test of skills for beginners.
The course demands accurate play, especially on some of the tighter fairways where even big hitters may be advised to play a shorter iron or wood off the tee for greater precision. Los Arqueros Golf is unique and its design is very different from the majority of courses on the Costa del Sol.

The Real Club of Golf Las Brisas was founded by D. Jose Banus in 1968 with the name of “Golf Club Nueva Andalucía”; He would be his first President until 1981.
For his design he chose the American Robert Trent Jones, considered already then like one of the best designers of the world of golf courses. He had just built the Sotogrande field, and later Las Brisas would also design Los Naranjos and Valderrama. The tour of this Marbella club presents multiple water obstacles: there are ten artificial lakes fed by two streams. The greens, mostly elevated, are heavily protected by bunkers. The result of the work of Robert Trent Jones, which we continue to enjoy today, was truly remarkable and original, achieving a difficult and attractive course. It was also original in the lawn used: “Bermuda” on the fairways and “Pencross Bentgrass” on greens, unusual species in Europe in the sixties; The consequence of all this is a course that requires playing a precision golf. As opinion of great golf players we can reflect the one of Paul Azinger (USA):
“Las Brisas does not have a bad hole. In fact it’s one of the best courses I’ve ever played.” The original design, the Englishman Gerald Huggan was commissioned by D. José Banús to design the landscaping and the course’s arboretum. Gerald Huggan, a great specialist in subtropical plants, had just returned from Kenya where he had designed the Nairobi gardens. Here at Las Brisas we can enjoy his work and imagination, in a place where there are trees representing all the continents of the world: species from Africa like the Cape Chestnut and the Spiny Acacias; the Indian Laurel and the Mysore Ficus from Asia; Chorisia Speciosa from America; the Green Ash from Mexico; and the Blackwood and the Whistling Pine from Australia, together with numerous species of palms and Mediterranean trees which coexist in great harmony, turning our course into a veritable botanic garden.
During the following ten years our Club was open to the public, serving the needs of tourism in the area and playing host to numerous guests, with 44,000 players visiting the course in 1975. In 1981 the Banús Group sold the course to the businessmen Herman Sauer and Juan Romero who decided to transform the Club into a private Club; to do so, they formed the company Sociedad Campogolf, S.A., which holds the Clubs assets, and 1,320 shares were issued. The Club’s facilities and the golf course were improved. In 1983 the Spanish Open was again held at the Club, leading to a resounding sporting success. The Irishman, Eamon D’Arcy, won the Open with the Spaniard, Manuel Piñero, coming second. Both he and José María Cañizares managed to equal the course record. In 1983, and after a period of consolidation as a private Club, Herman Sauer resigned from the Chair, with elections being called at which D. Antonio Fortuny was voted in as Chairman. During the following years,
especially in 1985 and 1991, our Club became the focus of some of the most prestigious national and international competitions like Their Majesties the King and Queens’ International Cup, the Spanish Open, the Nations’ Cup and the World Cup. The Spanish Open held in 1987 was won brilliantly by Nick Faldo, followed by Severiano Ballesteros, only two strokes behind, with the latter beating the course record with 64 strokes in the Pro-Am played the day before the competition. Kyle Phillips renovated its design in 2015, through the remodelling of the course, this delightful walking venue has been redesigned to respect and improve on the best aspects of the original design, as well as modified to create a new course which will not only continue to bring pleasure to the members, but once again challenge the professional player. Upon the realization of the new practice facility improvements, Las Brisas will be able to offer its members a complete toplevel golf experience.

Cabopino Golf Marbella is located on the border between Marbella and Mijas Costa, opposite the charming little Cabopino Port. The Course was designed by Mr. Juan Ligués Creus, who´s layout presents spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding pine forest. The Course has three par 3´s, two par 5´s and the rest par 4´s. Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, 3rd hole would be the one to mention. The tee box perched on the side of the cliff presents you with a tee shot that has a drop of nearly 80 metres to the fairway, then you face an elevated green protected by a large bunker. Holes 13 and 15 are also attractive, with
streams and lakes. The tenth tee provides a magnificent view of the back nine and the Mediterranean Sea. Cabopino Golf allows all categories of handicap golfers to enjoy a day out. At the entrance to Cabopino Golf Marbella we find the excellent facilities of the Golf Academy and Driving Range. The Driving Range has a capacity for 30 players, with a depth of 200 metres and 160 metres wide, distance markers, bunkers and the natural layout amongst the pine forest make an interesting and challenging practice session. The Academy offers lessons for individual ladies and gentlemen, groups for children and corporate groups.

Santana Golf is an 18 Hole golf course par 72 of approximately. 6207 meters in length, set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland.
The course, sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson, is set in a former avocado plantation which provided a natural solution to many problems. The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Each hole has two championship tees and two tees for general play for both men and ladies - wide and well manicured putting greens surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, filled with sand produced from crushed marble. Buggy paths are provided throughout the course, beautifully integrated between the rows of fruit trees.
In spite of its previous use, the Avocado Tree or Persea Índica - as it is known by its original name - is not the only tree present here, as many other endemic species like eucalyptus, orange and lemon trees, cactus, pines, fig trees, olive and mango trees make up the varied vegetation of this beautiful enclave, together with a varied population of indigenous birds, with amongst others the calzada eagle. The cork oaks along the 5th hole deserve special mention, as they have been present here for more than 500 years.
