A Warm Welcome to The Irish Golf Guide Welcome to the relaunch Issue of The Irish Golf Guide which is now working in partnership with Tom Kennedy Golf Consultancy. This magazine has been designed to help the local and National golfer in selecting and finding the course they wish to play in Ireland. It gives each golf club the chance to showcase their course and facilities with superb photography and enough information to whet the appetite of any golfer or group of golfers who wish to visit. The Irish Golf Guide has been brought to you by Golf Guide Digital Media Ltd, who publish further magazines with The North West Golf Guide, Yorkshire & North East Golf Guides & a New Midlands Golf Guide coming in June in the UK, and the Costa del Sol Golf Guide in Spain which is in its 12th year . This quarterly magazine contains in depth reviews of Golf Clubs, Local and International News items, and special promotions. A select number of courses each issue have editorials describing the course, the facilities and signature holes and contain directions to the course. These editorials are the chance for each

club to highlight itself and detail any offers and deals they have running during that period. The magazine is listed in alphabetical order, with the showcase courses being colour coded by the areas they are in. These areas are Leinster, Munster, Connaught and Ulster. A full golf course listing is also featured in the magazine containing the address, phone number, email and website of every golf course in Ireland. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers of all levels, from professionals and club players to beginners and societies. We hope that you will find this free publication an enjoyable read, and a must for choosing your golfing calendar of events in Ireland for 2017 and beyond with the backing of a full interactive Website which can be found at www.thegolfguide.co.uk and across social media at golfguidehq. The next issue will be available from all golf clubs, select golf shops, driving ranges and hotels from the middle of July 2017. Happy golfing from all at The Irish Golf Guide!

Wild Atlantic Way Open Ladies 4-Ball Championship at Carne Golf Links

Carne Golf Club have created an event to meet the growing demand both for lady golfers and from lady golfers. The club has set up a ladiesonly tournament - The Wild Atlantic Way Open Ladies Four Ball Championship - and those who enter (in teams of two) will be in for something special… and we don’t just mean the golf course, but the beauty of the region and the hospitality of all who live here. The inaugural event will be played on Saturday 10th June, but there are a couple of tempting extras: competitors can play a free practice round on Friday or a free follow up round on Sunday. Given that Belmullet is a little further off the beaten path and that this is a beautiful part of the world it makes sense to

take advantage. It’s also worth remembering that on a course this unique, your Carne ‘experience’ will really benefit from a second round. Any number of holes will mystify you on a first encounter and there are plenty of shots you will want to take another go at… the drop-dead gorgeous par three 16th for instance. The event is open to all lady golfers with ILGU handicaps, throughout Ireland, with an entry fee of €70. Accommodation packages, which include your golf entry fee, are also available at the nearby Broadhaven Bay Hotel, with 2 nights’ B&B costing €170pps, and 3 nights costing €210pps. A wide range of local B&B options are also available.

Carne is a big and shapely links… which may make it sound like a tough challenge, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Carne’s muscularity hides a very playable and fun course. Holes are dramatic – as are the views – but at 4,826 yards, par 72,the ladies course is most definitely accessible and thoroughly enjoyable. You’ll be challenged, for sure, but this is a unique golf links, one that every golfer should experience at least once… and given how the competition is being set up, you’ll have an opportunity to play it twice… and don’t ignore the new Kilmore nine, which only enhance the Carne adventure. Shootout Sunday introduced for 2017 NI Open, presented by Modest! Golf

A brand new format and a tournament full of innovation is certain to make the 2017 Northern Ireland Open, presented by Modest! Golf, one of the most talked about events in world golf this year and a must visit for golf fans across the UK and Ireland.

Now in its fifth year, the NI Open is one of the best supported events on the European Challenge Tour’s international schedule, both with record attendances and depth of field. And now in 2017, the NI Open has embraced the European Tour’s vision of introducing fresh new ideas and innovation to professional golf with the introduction of Shootout Sunday. The NI Open takes place at its perennial home Galgorm Castle from August 10-13 with 156 players teeing it up ahead of the traditional 36-hole cut, before a 54-hole cut followed by five rounds of six-hole strokeplay matches in what will be a high octane and dramatic #ShootoutSunday.

Continuing the short form matchplay theme from other European Tour events such as this year’s Super 6 in Perth, Australia, the NI Open will produce even greater excitement because the knock-out, strokeplay format on the final day will ensure the action continues until the last hole for each of the 28 matches. Mark McDonnell, Director of Modest! Golf, said: “We are delighted to return to the NI Open, this time as Presenting Sponsor. We love working alongside the European Challenge Tour and Galgorm Castle and this year is set to be bigger and better than ever before.” Fellow Modest! Golf Director Niall Horan commented: “We are excited to be coming

back to the NI Open and introducing a brand new format. Shootout Sunday will be a great concept, both for the players and spectators.” With a thrilling summer of golf on the horizon for Irish golf fans with two European Tour Group events in Northern Ireland, the NI Open’s exciting new format offers a new dimension that complements the staging of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Portstewart earlier in the holidays. Interactive and family events will also be on site at Galgorm Castle during the NI Open and one of the province’s sporting highlights will once again have FREE entry for all spectators. “We always look forward to returning to Galgorm Castle for one of our favourite weeks

FEATURE

of the year and this year’s NI Open will now have the added dimension of an innovative new format,” said Alain de Soultrait, Director European Challenge Tour. “On the Challenge Tour we are proud of our role in helping to grow and develop the game of golf so this imaginative new tournament fits our tour perfectly. The Northern Irish crowds are among the most knowledgeable and passionate in the world and they support this event phenomenally every year, and we are sure that they will enjoy this year’s tournament, and especially the Shootout Sunday, even more.” Tournament Ambassador Michael Hoey continues to be closely involved and has been a key figure in helping to make the NI Open an even better experience for players, spectators and television viewers. “The NI Open comes hot on the heels of the Irish Open and what is being devised here at

The Irish Golf Guide

Galgorm is an exciting new twist which sets it apart from anything we’ve ever had in Northern Ireland,” said Hoey, a five–time European Tour winner, who finished eighth at Galgorm in 2016 behind winner Ryan Fox from New Zealand. “We have spoken to several players about the change in format, including last year’s winner Ryan Fox, and all agreed that the new format is an extremely exciting new prospect. The NI Open’s unique and innovative strokeplay matches on the Sunday is a first for professional golf and is sure to be a highlight on the global golfing calendar.” “The new format is certain to be more entertaining for spectators, especially with holes like the redesigned par three seventh sure to throw up plenty of drama as crowds converge at strategic parts of the course.” Like every year, the NI Open simply would not be possible without the ongoing help from the

tournament’s core supporters such as Tourism NI, Mid & East Antrim Borough Council, Tourism Ireland, Sport NI and the Golfing Union of Ireland Ulster Branch. Councillor Audrey Wales MBE, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, said: “I am very pleased to say that we welcome thousands of spectators to Galgorm for the Northern Ireland Open. “They bring considerable economic benefits and I’m sure players, their support teams and many spectators will again be enjoying our legendary hospitality across Mid and East Antrim Borough’s hotels and guest houses in 2017. “The Borough will again also benefit from the global media coverage of the Northern Ireland Open this August and there is plenty more in golfing terms offered all year round with nine courses in all in the Borough.”

After a tremendous tournament and fabulous finish especially at The K Club in 2016, where Rory triumphed, The Irish Open heads back North to the Des Giffin designed Strand Course. Defending Champion Rory McIlroy will head up an all-star field in July to include Irish Major winners Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell & Darren Clarke; World Golf Champion Shane Lowry and many other golfing greats from home and abroad such as Justin Rose; John Rahm; Danny Willett, Tyrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood & Lee Westwood. The Strand Course at Portstewart Golf Club is 1 of 3 superb links courses that offer a different challenge for every standard of Golfer. The Old Course is a par 64 course along the rocky shore east of Portstewart where the Club was founded in 1884 while The Riverside is a par 68 course featuring 9 new holes that run down to the river. The Strand is par 72 and is the true definition of a championship links course, and also the jewel in Portstewart’s crown. The Rory Foundation will kick off Irish Open week by hosting “An Evening with Rory” on Tuesday 4th July at Belfast Waterfront. All tickets proceeds will go to the charitable works of the Rory Foundation and it promises to be

a fantastic evening. This unique event will be hosted by award winning action James Nesbitt, a lucky man indeed! There will also be another special guest in attendance on the night so stay tuned for that. It is a rare occasion that you will have the opportunity to get an exclusive insight into the life and passions of a golfer such as Rory McIlroy on his home turf, with tickets from just £40 to £60 it is a fantastic opportunity to get to know Rory better whilst also contributing to a great charity. There is plenty for children as well as The Irish Open, along with the chance to “Roar for Rory” in July! 2 lucky children from across the island of Ireland will be given the chance to win a unique opportunity for their schools to host a visit from the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Trophy – as well as a family pass and VIP Tour at the tournament during Pro-Am day. To enter the competition, children of all ages – or their parents and teachers – should simply submit a short video or fun photograph of themselves, their friends or classmates shouting ‘Come on Rory’ (or any other player they choose) in support of Dubai Duty Free Irish Open 2016 champion Rory McIlroy and the other top golfers who will be competing for

what has become one of the most sought after titles on the European Tour. Entries should be sent to roarforrory@duffyrafferty.com along with contact details clearly stating the child’s name, age, address and school. Alternatively, parents and teachers can tweet their videos and photos to @ddfirishopen or post on the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Facebook page with the hashtags #ddfirishopen and #roarforrory. Closing date for entries is Wednesday June 7 with the prize to be taken by June 23 or before the end of term. We are thoroughly looking forward to this year’s Irish Open at The Strand Course, Powerscourt Golf Club. There will be a fantastic field taking on one of Ireland’s best links courses, hopefully we can get another home winner and a finish similar to 2016 at The K Club would not nice as well! Beautiful Beaufort & Delightful Dooks Playing golf in County Kerry is very much playing golf in The Kingdom, such is the amazing array of classic courses to choose from. You have the old favourites such as Ballybunion, Tralee and Waterville; hidden gems like Dooks Golf Links and also picturesque parkland courses like Beaufort & Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. That is just to name a few!

Beaufort Golf Club Beaufort Golf Course is part of the Churchtown Estate, the centre piece of which is the Georgian house built in 1740 by Sir Roland Blennerhassett. The estate was bought in 1860 by James MacGillycuddy Magill who turned it into one of the largest dairy farms of its time in the Southwest region and remained that until recent times. James’s grandson and great grandsons closed the farm in the early nineties and with the help of golf architect Arthur Spring, developed Beaufort Golf Course which was officially opened in 1995. The golf course was sold in 2006 and the new owners then redeveloped it into one of the finest parkland courses in the southwest region.

The ruins of 15th century Castle Core standing beside the 15th green was designed as a square tower house. Castle Core (Castle of the round hill) was built circa 1480 by the MacGillycuddy’s, a branch of the O’Sullivan Mo’r clan. Fearing that it would have been taken by the English forces Donagh MacGillycuddy burnt the castle in 1641 but restored it in 1660. Donagh went on to become High Sheriff of Kerry in 1687. The castle was abandoned by Donagh’s son Denis in 1696 when he married into the Blennerhasset family in nearby Killorglin Castle. The stone of Castle Core was taken to build the Georgian house which is currently on the grounds of Beaufort Golf Club.

Dooks Golf Links Dooks Golf Club, founded in 1889 is one of the 10 oldest golf clubs in Ireland and celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2014. Dooks is often described as one of the true gems of Irish Golf. It is a true sea-side links situated in a panoramic setting in a corner of Dingle Bay, Co. Kerry. The Atlantic Ocean can be seen from practically every hole and Ireland’s highest mountain range, the McGillycuddy Reeks, overlooks every shot. Dooks was laid out as a nine hole golf course in 1889 by members of the Royal Horse Artillery who were billeted at Wynn’s Folly, Glenbeigh. At that time military units came from all over Ireland for artillery practice in Rossbeigh. These included Scottish officers who had earlier established golf courses near the Curragh Military Base in Kildare and at the Phoenix Park in Dublin. In 1895, the Great Southern Hotel, Caragh Lake, took over Dooks and engaged Golf Architect, Anthony Brown, to bring the club to a higher standard. In 1897, the Farranfore to Valentia Harbour Rail Line, widely regarded as one of the most spectacular rail lines in the world, established a rail stop at Dooks to accommodate the increasing number of visiting golfers. In 1900, an additional nine holes were added making Dooks the first 18 hole golf course in Kerry, unfortunately, the extra nine holes were

The Irish Golf Guide

soon abandoned due to the costs involved. Dooks was affiliated to the GUI in 1903 and to the ILGU in 1913. In 1963, the clubs’ 75 year land lease expired and they were given notice to quit by the land owners, the Beresford McGregor Estate. The members ran an intensive “Save Dooks Campaign” which included a press conference and a televised interview at Dooks which was broadcast nationally. In 1965, the land owners agreed to sell the land to the members for £7,000. This may not seem a lot right now but in 1965 it was seven times the clubs annual income. Bord Fáilte assisted the club with a generous grant of £3,500 and the balance was raised from the members through a bond issue. Having obtained ownership of the land, the members then set about adding nine new holes to bring the course up to championship level. What followed was an extraordinary feat of human voluntary achievement, when the members, under their own steam and on a shoe string budget, designed and physically built the extra nine holes. The job was completed in 1970 at a cost of £3,500 and the new 18 hole course was officially opened by Mr. Gerry Owens, President of the Golfing Union of Ireland. The club continued to grow in membership and celebrated its centenary year in 1989. In 2002, the Club sought a meeting with renowned golf course architect, Martin Hawtree, who specialised in the design of links golf courses and had recently completed work for Irish courses such as Royal Dublin and Lahinch as well as numerous other top rated courses worldwide. Mr. Hawtree subsequently produced impressive plans for a complete overhaul and revamping of Dooks. After a great deal of discussion and fine tuning these plans were accepted by the club. Work commenced in 2003 and was completed in 2006 at a cost of

almost €2.5m. The new Hawtree design has put Dooks to the forefront of Links Golf worldwide as a unique and genuine test of golf. Adjacent to Dooks is an area known as The Commonage. It is 80 acres of natural dune lands of spectacular natural beauty. This area has recently been purchased by the club and it provides a mouth-watering opportunity for the future potential development of spectacular new links golf holes. Dooks is never content to rest on its laurels, like the pioneers of 1889, and living up to its club motto “Per Ardua, Ad Astra”, it is relentless in its pursuit of links golf excellence. Neither is Dooks content to rely solely on its reputation for excellent golf in a magical setting. It works hard to ensure that friendliness, hospitality and a unique club atmosphere are standard fares for everybody. A vibrant club, fully owned by its members, it always strives to be defined by the appellation “Friendly Dooks’ which has been used by others for many years to describe it. During 2014 the club celebrated its 125th Year with many social and golfing events over the 12 months! Dooks opens itself up to the golfing world and extends an invitation to everybody with an interest in golf and golfing history to come and enjoy the Dooks experience. In 2015, Dooks won The Irish Mixed Foursomes title along with hosting the National Finals.

FEATURE

I have used online promotional tools and in particular social media for at least past 7 years, especially in the golf industry and I would highly recommend if not insist that any reputable golf club or company must use this to further their business. Here are just a few examples of how you can help develop your golf business through social media.

Twitter This is currently the place to be - instant posts, real-time replies and a huge reach to a worldwide audience makes this a fantastic promotional tool. Many golfers and the majority of the golf industry chat takes place here so it is a great networking facility as well. I have booked a lot of groups through Twitter down the years actually and have also received enquiries through this medium. Research shows that your Twitter followers are a valuable and engaged audience, so treat them with respect and don’t always be selling – cool photos of your golf course or company or a funny story every now and then goes a long way to keeping them interested. 70% of your followers tend to broadcast your content through Quoting or Retweeting while 43% of your followers plan to make multiple purchases from the businesses they follow. It takes a bit of time to get the most out of

Twitter, at least 30 minutes a day to keep it up to date and increase followers. The worst thing I have seen is golf clubs that have created accounts only to see them with a few tweets and very few followers. It is a free resource, although time is involved but this should now be part of any golf club manager’s promotional campaign. The key to getting seen/heard on Twitter is to include links, hashtags and photos on each post while being relevant, informative and sometimes controversial to increase exposure. Facebook While Twitter might be the trendy cousin, Facebook is the photo album for the planet really (not everybody is on Instagram yet!). Some people say that those who don’t understand Twitter stay on Facebook but it is still an excellent resource. Photos of your course are best received here and it is the best

place I’ve seen to run competitions especially, helping increase followers and also driving traffic to your website if utilised properly. Like Twitter, you need to be relevant, informative and controversial at times to spark debate. Ensure you are not always trying to sell stuff with every post or status update though……that way people will get bored and think you are only after one thing when probably you are but there are ways around this – golf tour updates, congrats to local winners of golf tournaments and Majors and photos from your golf course. Start to build the Likes on your page by Inviting Friends followed by running those dreaded “Like & Share” competitions and promote your posts (if you have the budget!). LinkedIn This is the best professional networking site on the web, most people that do any sort of business are available here. I have managed

FEATURE

to develop many contacts here and this has resulted in bookings along with creating viable partnerships and sourcing better suppliers as well. Build up your contacts, join the groups relevant to you - Irish Golf, Linked Golfers and Irish Golf Societies are musts here for Irish golf clubs for example. Ensure you contribute to debates which will help those following your updates and of course start some of your own while also posting promotions on your own events and special offers from time to time. Again, overkill or overuse with constant promotion of offers will soon turn people off so it is essential to take a balanced approach here. YouTube This is a fantastic outlet to promote your golf club or resort with videos of your course and facilities that you can roll our across your other social media platforms as well. The recent drone golf course flyovers are a superb selling

The Irish Golf Guide

tool and really add that little bit extra to your promotional tools. Make sure to keep your YouTube Channel up to date to keep your followers engaged and interested! Maintaining a Blog Setting up a blog and keeping it updated can be a valuable resource for potential members and visitors while also being informative for current members as well, it would also save on the time to email each member with the weekly/ monthly newsletter when you could just update the blog with current golf club results, golf club news and other relevant topics such as news from the PGA & European Tours while also maintaining a local angle. The blog topics can be wide ranging but ensure that when one is setup that it is kept up to date, at least weekly, with whatever news items you can think of. I would recommend WordPress.com or Blogger for setting up a potential blog.

Other social media for websites to consider would be Instagram (I’m still figuring this out myself!), Google+, About.me and Pinterest. There are more but it is tough to be on them all, my advice would be to get setup on the most popular ones and go from there! Whatever you do on Social Media I would recommend setting up profiles and keeping them updated daily but at the very least weekly if at all possible. If you would like Tom Kennedy Golf Consultancy to take a look at your Social Media setup don’t hesitate to email us: tom@tomkennedygolf.com or call +353-61-525182 with any enquiries.

Cork duo Howard & Dunne Claim 2017 Social Media Open

The 5th Anniversary Tournament of The Social Media Open would take them to the same venues as 2016 - Ballybunion Old Course & Cashen Course, Dooks Golf Links & Tralee Golf Links - from Tuesday 25th to Friday 28th April 2017. This year had a record entry of 160 golfers (80 teams), having started with just 40 golfers 4 years ago when they took on Mount Juliet, Castlemartyr, Adare & Old Head.

Plenty golfers made it down on the Monday evening before play started the following morning, some taking it easy and preparing without the usual hangover while others were starting as they meant to go on that week! The craic was mighty in Kilcooly’s that night which did bode well for a great week, on and off the course! The first day’s play took in a 2 course start on The Old & Cashen at Ballybunion Golf Club on Tuesday 25th April 2017. While the 2 course start worked well it still entailed an early start on The Old Course with the first golfers setting off at 7.24am on a still but chilly morning. Rune Karlsen, Manager of Tromso Golf Club in

Norway, and his playing partner, Paal Kjelsrud, got things started as they did in 2016. The early scores were decent as the early risers seemed to be getting the better of the scoring conditions. However it was 2 teams that started later on The Old & Cashen courses that led the way after Round 1 – Cork brothers, John & Liam Deasy, returned an excellent 45 points followed closely behind them by another Cork team, John Howard & Jim Dunne on 44. Day 2 started under sunny skies at Ballybunion while those who took on The Old Course on Tuesday moved to the Cashen Course on Wednesday 26th April for Round 2 while the teams that took on the Cashen on Day 1 moved

onto The Old Course. Scoring was definitely better for the morning starters, even after the previous night’s festivities at Kilcooly’s, with the wind picking up in the afternoon making both courses a true test of links golf. John & Jim powered ahead in the 2nd Round with a great score of 45, giving them a 7 shot lead from Warrenpoint pair Brian McKee & Joe Lenfestey. Lewis Jones & Gavin Bonham added a solid 40 points to their 41 on Day 1 to lie in 3rd place. 10 shots covered the Top 8 but the chasing pack had it all to do to catch the Cork boys out in front. Ireland led the way in The Nations Cup with 2 rounds to go. Killarney was the next base for the Social Media Open gang for the

following 3 nights with a combination of local hotels hosting the golfers. The 3rd Round of Social Media Open 2017 started under gloomy skies and a little rain but this soon cleared to a fabulous day at Dooks Golf Links on Thursday 27th April. The Italian contingent, all 22 of them, were some of the first golfers out on the day on the testing links course as all teams tried to climb the Leaderboard on “Moving Day”. Scoring was the best of the week so far with many teams returning scores in the mid to high 40s. Best score of the day come from Kate Docherty & Martina Syron who returned a fabulous 47 points while there were many teams returning 40 or better in the kind scoring conditions. John & Jim again recorded a consistent score, 44 this time to extend their lead to 8 going into the Final Round at Tralee the following morning. Tralee Golf Links was the venue for the Final Round of The 2017 Social Media Open and again this tremendous golf course lived up to all the expectations on Friday 28th April. The course was in phenomenal condition with the

greens slick and rolling beautifully. The early starters definitely got the best of the scoring conditions, with the first fourball out on the course producing the best team score of the day in the shape of Stuart Hasson & Gay Hannon who returned 45 points. Nearest the Pin on the day also went to an early starter, Kate Docherty! As the wind picked up in the afternoon teams did struggle, especially on Back 9, but this did not detract from an amazing experience at Tralee. John & Jim has their worst day of the 4 at Tralee but still managed to post a creditable 40 points to ensure victory was guaranteed. Chris Garde & Billy Farrell, regulars at our Tournaments, took 2nd place. Lewis & Gavin secured 3rd place with a 4 round points total of 162 while Lindsay Hamill & Tom Baldwin grabbed 4th place on the countback from 4 teams on 159 with Paschal & Noel McMahon getting a Top 5 finish on the same score. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves as thoughts now moved to the Prize Giving Dinner at Randles Hotel in Killarney that evening. Ireland again triumphed in The Nations Cup

while Honourary Irish Captains, John Mooney & Shay Kelly, took The Conefrey Shield. The Prize Giving Dinner began just after 9pm in Killarney with all teams in the mood for celebrating, especially our Dutch contingent that provided the backing track for the evening from their table! A huge thanks to everybody for making the week what it was, all the players; the golf courses and all their staff; the wonderful Guest Houses and Hotels and of course Tournament Partners Conefrey’s Pharmacy, Druids of Ireland by LJ Golf, Irish Biltong, Open Fairways, Jonathan McDonnell, Vox Golf, Royal & Awesome, Club Clean Ireland, Wyldsson and Fresh Today. Planning is already underway for our 2018 Tournament and hope to see many of you there next year! O’Keeffe Claims Flogas Irish Amateur Open crown

Peter O’Keeffe, Douglas Golf Club, triumphed at the Flogas Irish Amateur Open at the magnificent Royal County Down Golf Club staged from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th May 2017.

The Corkman was in contention right from the off, starting with a 1 under par 70 on the par 71 layout in Newcastle, Co Down. He added a further 70 in Round 2 to tie for the lead with Scotland’s Christopher MacLean on 2 under par (140). As many of the field toiled for the final 2 rounds, O’Keeffe added 2 consistent rounds of 73 to first of all take the lead by 1 going into the Final Day’s play and then to ultimately claim a 3 shot victory with MacLean and England’s Tom Sloman tied for 2nd place. The only real blip in the Final Round being a 4 putt double bogey on the 15th but he still remained confident seeing out the last few holes to cruise home to victory. The true international look of the field was there for all to see with just 1 more Irishman in the Top 10, Alex Gleeson of Castle GC, accompanied by 4 Englishmen; 4 Scots; 1 Dane & 1 German. This was a memorable victory for Peter, being his first Irish Amateur “Major” and it puts

him right in contention for an elusive first Irish Cap as well. The victory was all the more memorable for O’Keeffe having returned from the professional ranks last year to amateur status, having completed the obligatory 2 year hiatus in the meantime. His work with coach Noel Fox and the work they have been doing has definitely paid off in droves, resulting in the first big career win. Speaking of his win on Sunday O’Keeffe said: ““It feels fantastic. Like, it was tough to keep my emotions in check there going up the last. It was nice to have a few shots to lean on. It hasn’t sunk in yet but I am absolutely delighted.” The future looks bright for Peter O’Keeffe, now a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Professional and Trackman certified professional among other qualifications and accolades. He runs O’Keeffe Golf Performance

at Dennehy’s Health & Fitness in Blackpool, Cork, which is immensely popular with golfers around Cork and also further afield. I’m sure more golfers will now come to improve their game with the new Irish Amateur Open Champion!

Wire-to-wire Win For Maria Dunne at Irish Women’s Strokeplay

Maria Dunne, Skerries Golf Club, led from the very start to triumph at The 2017 Irish Women’s Strokeplay Championship played at County Louth Golf Club (Baltray) from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th May 2017.

A magnificent 9 under par 66 set Maria on her way but that was just enough for a 1 shot lead after Round 1, from playing partner Gemma Clews from England. The weather closed in over the weekend and Baltray bore its teeth, so much so that there were no more scores in the 60s for the Final 2 Rounds and probably making it less likely there would be many charges through the field which could help those off to a fast start on Day, Dunne and Clews included. Having added a 1 over 76 to her outstanding opening round, Dunne was tied for the lead going into Day 3 with Clews who added a level par 75 to finish on 8 under. Early in the Final Round Clews had opened up a 2 shot lead over Dunne after 6 holes but the 11th proved a turning point in both their Final Day fortunes. Dunne made an up-and-down for birdie while Clews had unfortunately 3 putted for par, from then on struggled on the

Back 9 and drifted out of contention although only finishing 2 shots out of the lead after 54 holes. Elsewhere, England’s Sophie Lamb was making her play for the title. Birdies on 16 & 18 for Lamb resulted in a fantastic Final Round of 4 under par 71 and posted 7 under for the Tournament, leaving her Leader in the Clubhouse and awaiting what may happen with the others in contention out on the course. Maria Dunne was not letting this title go, however, holing clutch putts of 10 foot for par on 17 and then an 8 foot birdie on 18 to clinch a 2 shot victory over both Lamb & Clews. Similar to The Irish Amateur Open there was a distinctive international feel to the Leaderboard once more with 2 Irish; 5 English; 1 Welsh and 2 Germans making up the Top 10. Sinead Sexton, Paula Grant & Lucy Simpson all from Ireland managed creditable Top 16 finishes.

Taking the newly named Reddan-Garvey Trophy, in honour of legendary Irish lady golfers, Philomena Garvey & Claire Reddan, Maria spoke of her victory afterwards: “I am absolutely delighted, it was nerve wrecking! I just tried to focus on my own game and keep going one shot at a time, that’s easy said but I really tried to stick to it today. Once I realised I was a couple of shots ahead of my playing partners I said to myself to just par the last 4 holes and don’t worry what the others are doing. I managed to get a nice par on 18 which was a great way to wrap it up!”

Golf & Rivercruising A marriage made in heaven

The thrill of playing on renowned golf courses that were far from home have always been tempered by the logistics of travel and the lack of local knowledge. Add to that the need to recruit likeminded individuals to join in the venture and suddenly a trip to Europe to play golf becomes merely a wistful and unrequited desire.

Does it? Is it just a dream, an unrequited desire? What if there was a way to combine visiting some of the most beautiful cities of Europe, such as Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Amsterdam, Heidelberg, to name but a few? Add to that gourmet food every day, paired with sumptuous wines, and top it all off by playing Europe’s leading golf courses that host some of the European Tour marquee events such as the Porsche European Open, The BMW PGA Championship, The Solheim Cup and of course the respective Open Championships of the various countries? The concept is simple if you can combine all the necessary elements, which LGT Golf and AmaWaterways have done. The two companies mixed 2 parts golf fanatic with 2 parts gourmet food and wine, 2 parts luxury cabin accommodation and a splash of sightseeing, shopping, and cultural immersions to create the exclusive Golf River Cruise package. The cruise and golf package is a 10 day holiday in the heart of Europe that starts with arrival in Prague or Budapest, and gives golfer the opportunity to play 5 leading golf courses and still see the amazing sights of Budapest, Vienna, and Prague, as well as some of the more historically important sights such as Castle Dürnstein where Richard the 1st (Lionheart) of England was imprisoned as he returned from the crusades from 1192 to 1193. “I think that this is the real beauty of the product,” said Nicholas Boekdrukker, Managing

Director of LGT Golf. “Guests have the opportunity to play the leading golf courses in Europe, see the most important sites and cities in 5 countries, and their hotel moves with them.” Stuart Perl, Managing Director for AmaWaterways UK said, “The opportunity to combine our top-rated river cruises with the best golf courses in Europe really is a marriage made in heaven.” The floating luxury hotel meanders along the Danube River, and each day passengers can take local excursions or immerse themselves in the local culture. The golfers, however, will have been whisked away in their luxury Mercedes V class van, and arrive at one of the leading golf courses of Europe. “Everything will have been arranged in advance for the guests – their tee time, practice balls for their warm up and pull trolleys,” he added, “After their round, they will enjoy lunch in the clubhouse while their clubs are cleaned by our staff.” This full service and attention to detail is something the self-confessed golf fanatic has picked up over the years playing on championship golf courses in Asia, the United States and in Europe. “I have been privileged to be able to play some really fantastic golf courses around the world and especially in Asia. The more I played the more I wanted to play on courses where quality was the overriding factor in those courses,” he said. “ Those experiences have become the cornerstone of the luxury golf cruise that AmaWaterways have rolled out for 2017 and beyond. The golf courses, are all of the highest quality. The service is a full concierge service throughout the journey. “Our staff accompany the boat and the golfers throughout the trip, so that our guests will have the same friendly face greeting them every day. As avid golfers themselves, they will ensure that our guests have the best possible service throughout their trip,” said Mr. Boekdrukker. This starts with the welcome gift that each golfer receives at the beginning of their trip, and goes on throughout the entire trip and beyond. On the Prague - Budapest route, the courses that are on the program have been designed by some of the best names in the business

such as Jack Nicklaus and Bernhard Langer, and all 5 live up to their reputation as some of the best in Europe. Starting with 3 wonderful days in Prague, guests will play the Albatross Golf course, rated by Golf Digest as the best golf course in the Czech republic, and host of the D&D Real Czech Open. After a transfer to Vilshofen, the guests embark their vessel and enjoy the luxurious cabins and gourmet food on board. The next Golf course is the Bernhard Langer designed Beckenbauer course which hosts the Porsche European Open. Returning to their ship, guests cruise overnight to the city of Linz. While non-golfers take a day trip to Salzburg, golfers will go to the Diamond Country club, host of the Austrian Open. The 8th hole was

Golfers meet the ship in the late afternoon in Bratislava, and cruise overnight to Budapest. There they will play at the Pannonia golf and Country club, host of the Hungarian Open and Seniors Championships. A final evening is spent on the ship with a dinner evening cruise before disembarkation. At the end of their Journey, golfers will have played the best courses of 5 different countries, experienced the sights and sounds of 3 European capital cities, and dined in luxury on the leading cruise ships in Europe. “We want our guests to have an incredible experience, and I believe that they will return home with a smile on their face having experienced some of the best golf Europe has to offer.” said Mr. Boekdrukker.

The ship continues its journey with its golfers safely back on board to Vienna with stops along the way for passengers to explore the famous wine region of lower Austria and castle Dürenstein. On the next day, while the ship moves on to Bratislava, Golfers depart for the Penati Golf Resort and play the Jack Nicklaus designed Legends course, which features the only par 6 on the European Tour, a monster at 787 yards.

Vox Golf Modernising competitive golf Whatever about the equipment revolution in golf there is no doubting that digital technology has totally transformed how we play and interact with the game. Couple this revolution with today’s fast paced lifestyles and the need for golf to “Speed up its act” and VoxGolf comes into its own. In essence, VoxGolf is an app that brings modern forms of competition to your phone.

The concept was devised by Daniel Lewis and former Irish international and Challenge Tour winner Stephen Browne and the aim is simple, to create a better experience for golfers. In 2013 Browne teamed up with Lewis as they looked at mixing their passion for golf and digital platforms to make a better experience for golfers. “When you look at other sports like darts, cricket or snooker for example, they have all moved to faster competitive formats and all have grown rapidly because of this evolution.

Golf is moving to new formats at a slower pace but with new initiatives from the European Tour and PGA of America for shorter format events and the development of more 9 hole courses worldwide the game seems to be moving in the right direction” So how can VoxGolf benefit the club golfer? Simply put it gives you more choices and the opportunity to have some fun. The way golf is going now people have less time to play, everybody is being squeezed no matter what age they are so the idea of shorter, more fun,

formats with options of a competitive side is where golf needs to go. With VoxGolf you can get to the 13th tee of your round all warmed up and enter a competition for the last six holes. It can turn the casual mentality of a 6 or 9 hole game into a competitive event against a field. You can run open events any day of the week on any course as a group, society, member or visitor and all compete in one event. The options are endless.. Visit www.voxgolf.com

Multiple courses can be easily created which may include a Front 9 and Back 9 course, a shortened 12-hole loop for the winter, or a Par 3 Shootout. It’s all added fun! Setting up competitions is extremely simple and you can enter the format, course and number of holes, as well as the start and end time. Stay in touch with your golfing group or members with the VoxGolf built-in messaging capability. Announce winners, upcoming events or proshop discount days instantly with the VoxGolf platform. 2. PLAY The VoxGolf app allows players to sign in to games on their mobile phone, with cashless

entry fees, a digital score card and a live leaderboard showing progress in real time. Simply find and enter Vox Games directly from your phone. The app offers a cash or cashless option via credit card, as well as a location feature which shows open games available near you. Once you’re signed into a game, you can enter your score after each hole on the app. Number of holes, handicap allowance and indices on the digital scorecard are all automatically tailored to the competition format of the day. During and after play, each competitor can see a live leaderboard shown in real time on the app. Players can track their progress in the standings, as well as viewing fellow participant’s score cards. VoxGolf is ideal for enhancing the competitive experience beyond the usual “1st, 2nd,3rd” winners’ circle. The platform is fully customisable to offer options such as “Front

6, Middle 6, Last 6” competitions, a Par 3 or a Par 5 Shootout. You just build a game that suits where and when you want to play. 3. WIN Results are announced on the app immediately after the last score has been returned through push notifications, and winners can redeem their prize or avail of vouchers offered through the Vox Store. Your club, professional or society / competition organiser may offer physical prizes for winners, or opt for the Vox Credits system. Gather Vox Credits each time you win and spend them in the Vox Store to redeem vouchers for your favourite retail outlets or your club Proshop. From a golf club point of view VoxGolf is just as useful. It allows the club administrator send push notifications to members, collect all data from users in that club, including useful game analytics on playing habits.

MacGillycuddy burnt the castle in 1641 but restored it in 1660.

Fearing that it would have been taken by the English forces Donagh

Beaufort Golf Club is a superb 18 hole parkland championship golf course located just 10 minutes from Killarney Town on the Ring of Kerry road. It is a spectacular course in stunning surroundings and is enjoyable for all standards of golfers. The club is under the new management of Tadgh and Helen Clifford since 2013, and is going from strength to strength.

Designed by Jeff Howes, the Championship course runs over 7000 yards on the banks of the river Slaney and has a diversity of golf holes, rarely seen on one golf course. The Index 1 hole 16th tee box sits on the bank of the River Slaney giving a glimpse of the green over 400 yards away, an accurate drive is required through the mature pines with a little draw to avoid the fairway bunkers, to compliment a good drive requires a well executed mid to long iron to the green which is part surrounded by the River, a par will be a memorable result. An elevator will take you from the 17th up 5 floors to the 18th tee box giving a bird’s eye view over the river as you ascend. The bar and restaurant offer a warm welcome and tempting menu with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and of Mount Leinster, we are open to visitors and societies every day.

The golf course is set in 300 acres of breathtaking parklands in the former Hall-Dare Estate and the lift is provided as a convenience for weary golfers! It is a feature that could be copied to good advantage at a number of other Irish courses which present a stern walking challenge to all and a near impossible test to their senior citizens. Opulence and old world rural charm are being combined in a manner befitting the magnificent location here in the former Hall-Dare Estate. Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club is fast becoming another glittering jewel in Ireland’s crown of fine golf courses. This is a big golf course. It runs over 7,000 yards and is the highest point to date in the ascending design career of Jeff Howes. It is set to be a worthy neighbour to Mount Juliet. The town of Bunclody shares the Adare-style rustic charm and the luxurious Carlton Millrace Hotel is located just across from the entrance of Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club, Co. Wexford.

CARNE GOLF LINKS

42

Carne Golf Links Carne Golf Links in North Mayo on the West Coast of Ireland lies in magnificent unspoiled sand dunes overlooking Blacksod Bay and the wild Atlantic Ocean, near the town of Belmullet. Explore an area that is famed the world over for its’ fantastic golf course and white sandy Atlantic beaches that stretch for miles, its bountiful wildlife, warm welcome and hospitality.

Carne Golf Links was the last links course to be designed by the late Eddie Hackett and it is now believed by many who have played it to be his greatest design. An additional 9 holes (The Kilmore 9) opened in 2013, which were designed by Jim Engh Design and McIntosh Golf Design, and complete a stunning 27 holes of the finest Links golf in Ireland. The experience at Carne is best summarised by the golf writers and players who have walked our fairways. They have described it as a journey back in time to the origins of golf. “In any string of words I might pen over the rest of my life, I might never write a more true sentence than this: Carne is absolutely brilliant. Front nine, back nine, every hole, every hill, every inch of the place is simply special.” - Tom Coyne (Author of ‘A Course Called Ireland’)

“For the first time in Top 50 history, two courses share the top ranking. Carne’s rise can be explained by the recent opening of its new Kilmore 9, a spectacular side of golf winding through the Mullet Peninsula’s most breathtaking dunes.” - John Garrity, commenting on his ‘World’s Top 50 Courses’ “If I was only allowed to play one golf course again it would be Carne. It’s this incredibly wild and beautiful setting with these huge sand dunes stretching 150m above sea level.” - Kevin Markham, author of ‘Hooked and Driving the Green’, Irish Sunday Times 1st June 2014 following his journey around Ireland playing 350 courses “What a classic, wild and ranging layout, in a most stunning setting.” - Jay Morse, editor of forelinksters.com.

For the golfer who is seeking a beautiful and tranquil environment to enjoy great Golf, Dooks presents a convincing case. Golf has been played in Dooks since 1889. The golf links is set out on one of the three stretches of sand dunes at the head of Dingle bay. In the immediate foreground are the sand dune peninsulas of Rossbeigh and Inch and just a few miles away the whitewashed houses of Cromane fishing village provide an eye catching distraction. South eastwards are the famed McGillycuddy’s Reeks, to the Southwest are the lovely cooms and hills of Glenbeigh and across the bay to the north are the Slieve Mish and Dingle mountains. A truly magical location for a stunning golf course.

Dooks Golf Links is not as exposed as some Irish courses and features and amazing variety of gorse, heather and wild flowers, the “gentle” wind is never far away and the narrow genuine sandy fairways and well contoured greens offer you a real taste of traditional golf at its very best. Signature Hole: The 18th Par 4. An awesome par 4 into the prevailing wind. Drive over the hill towards the chimneys in the distance. From the top of the hill admire the vista while you prepare to hit a full shot to the green. For shorter drives lay up short of the dunes and chip close.

“Compromising four par 5s, ten par 4s and four par 3s stretching over 7000 yards you will be tested by disguised landing areas, deceptive carries and the ever present threat of water.” The Lisheen Springs Golf Club was formed in July 2012 but the course itself has been enjoyed since 2002 and has been listed in the top 100 courses in the country as well as having hosted many top PGA, GUI & ILGU events. One of its particular strengths is its state of the art drainage which allows it to be open all year round, given our recent years of wet summers and winters it’s an increasingly important factor in a golfer’s choice of their home club.

Compromising four par 5s, ten par 4s and four par 3s stretching over 7000 yards you will be tested by disguised landing areas, deceptive carries and the ever present threat of water. The artistry of the course design has embraced Mother Nature and ensures that all levels of golfers will need to display equal measures of caution and courage to survive with score intact.

18-hole Championship golf links course is a stunning site to behold. You will experience not only an incredible course, but unparalleled five star facilities, world-class hospitality and the highest standards of luxury. Offering views of the Atlantic from 16 of 18 holes, the par-72 layout features a single loop of nine holes out and nine back, playing 7,026 yards from the back tees. In line with Greg Norman’s (original designer) philosophy of ‘least disturbance’, the most natural route was taken in laying the course out through the sand dunes. As a result, the course has an unusual combination of five par 3s and five par 5s.

The Irish Golf Guide

Leinster Introduction

Leinster The province of Leinster takes in an area from the southern border of Northern Ireland through to the sunny south east corner of the island of Ireland, with over one and a half million people living in the vibrant, not to be missed city of Dublin and its surrounding areas alone. Leinster takes in the counties of Carlow, Dublin & Dublin City, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford & Wicklow. It has a long sea coast, stretching from Carlingford Bay in County Louth to Hook Head in County Wexford. Leinster is probably best viewed as a series of sub regions, each sub region encapsulating its own local geography, unique landscape and separate but co-joined history. From the ancient Hill of Tara and the world famous stone age site at Newgrange, at 5000 years old it is considered to be one the oldest man made structures in the world, to the vibrant and stylish city of Kilkenny and then to Wicklow, the famous

‘Garden of Ireland’, there are an amazing number of historical and fascinating places to visit for both the golfer and non-golfer alike. Dublin, it’s Capital is a county as well as a city and sprawls over a large part of this area. From the superb nightlife to the modern museums and art galleries, great little sea-side resorts along the coast, the lavish gardens of Howth Castle, or the unique and wonderful collection of Irish furniture and paintings at Malahide Castle - its all here in a city not to be missed. From a golfing perspective, there are more courses in Leinster than any other province in Ireland. With plenty of great links courses such as Arklow, Seapoint and St Annes, to the large inland golf resorts of Druid’s Glen, Mount Juliet and Carton House, not forgetting the reknowned K Club near Dublin, where The Ryder Cup was won so emphatically by Europe in 2006, Leinster has plenty of variety to challenge golfers of all levels.

“From a golfing perspective, there are more courses in Leinster than any other province in Ireland.”

The Irish Golf Guide

Connaught Introduction

Connaught The province of Connaught (Connacht) lies in the West of Ireland with its coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The counties of Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Galway and Roscommon are within its boundary. Historically, Connaught has retained its rich Gaelic heritage and today still has communities where the Irish language is spoken. These regions are collectively called the Gaeltacht. Connaught has some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside to be found in Ireland, including the spectacular mountainous landscape of Connemara. The primary business centre of Connaught, and most densely populated area, is the thriving city of Galway to the south of the province. Galway is the capital of the West of Ireland. The streets and buildings of this ancient town have many interesting features, and its position on

the edge of the Gaeltacht makes it the gateway to magnificent areas such as Connemara, Corrib country, and the Aran Islands. The city itself is a continuing centre of growth with its University, Institute of Technology, Theatres, Cathedral, Castle, Hotels, Docks, Industries as well as other interesting attractions. As for golf, the dramatic scenery and splendour of the Connaught region has created wonderful natural landscapes for golf course designers to hone their skills. Like all areas in the west of Ireland, the first obstacle to a good score is Mother Nature herself. The golfer will find that he or she will not alone have to contend with the cunning and guile of architect allied to the terrain, but must adjust for what is benignly known in local parlance as the “westerly breeze” coming straight across three thousand miles of Atlantic Ocean.

“Some of the most beautiful & unspoilt countryside to be found in Ireland...”

The Irish Golf Guide

Munster Introduction

Munster Munster is the southern most province of Ireland and is home to 6 of the 32 counties – Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Wareford and Tipperary. All the counties in Munster touch the Atlantic except for Tipperary – tha largest county in Ireland. Cork is the second largest county in Ireland and is also the second largest city. Other cities in the province include Limerick and Waterford. The major towns are Tralee, Killarney, Ennis, Clonmel and Thurles. Cork has a population of over 160,000 people. Like Venice the city is built upon the waters, and Cork centre is built on an island in the River Lee, just upstream of Cork Harbour. The two channels of the River Lee which embrace the city centre are spanned by many bridges, and this gives the city a distinctive continental air. However it is often said of Cork City that it has all the amenities of a large city, but still manages to retain its pleasant atmosphere and extreme friendliness, which you will experience on your visit. Cork is a city of

remarkable charm, and the visitor cannot fail to be captivated by its hilly streets, bumpy bridges and peaceful backwaters. Munster is a tremendously fertile area of Ireland with many major rivers including the Bandon, the Lee, the Blackwater, the Suir and the final stages of the Shannon and its spectacular Lough Derg which is a border point of Munster, Connacht and Leinster. Munster has a number of mountain ranges and includes the largest peak in Ireland - Carrauntoohil in Kerry’s majestic MacGillycuddy Reeks. Sport is almost regarded as a religion in Munster. The Gaelic Athletic Association - GAA - was formed in Thurles, Co.Tipperary and all Munster counties are passionate about their hurling and gaelic football. Munster rugby unites all the six counties and their followers and supporters are known the world over. There are golf courses to suit every golfer throughout Munster, from fine parkland courses

and resorts such as Killarney and Mahoneys’s Point in Kerry and Fota Island Golf and Country Club, Lee Valley and Monkstown in Cork. The province is also home to several spectacular and world reknowned links courses including Tralee, Waterville and Dooks in County Kerry, all situated on the wild Atlantic coast.

Ulster Introduction

Ulster From the natural wonders of the Giants Causeway and the Marble Arch caves, to the country houses and gardens of Castleward, Mount Stewart and Florencecourt, the glorious sandy beaches on the Antrim coast and the tranquil shores of Lough Erne and Strangford Lough, right across to the spectacular and rugged coastline of Donegal there is much to see and do in this varied and beautiful province of Ulster. There are the bustling and colourful cities of Belfast and Londonderry, with their many stylish bars, restaurants, hotels and many historical attractions. However, if you’re looking for breathtaking scenery, the Antrim Coast really is as impressive as its reputation suggests. It is one of the most beautiful shorelines in Ireland, winding past towering cliffs, sandy beaches, picturesque harbours and family resorts. Inland lies Lough Neagh, the largest lake in Great Britain and Ireland and the Fermanagh lakelands, sprinkled with tiny islands, wooded parks and monastic ruins.

On the west coast lies Donegal, with its breathtaking misty mountains, serene lakes and dramatic coastlines. Donegal boasts a vast rugged coastline softened regularly by a succession of beautiful beaches with golden sand and clear fresh waters. Inland, Donegal is wild and unspoilt with winding roads leading to never-ending spectacular vistas. Major attractions include Glenveagh National Park and Castle, Tory Island, Glebe House and Gallery, Colmcille Heritage Centre, Fort Dunree Military Museum and Abbey Mill Wheels. Letterkenny, County Donegal’s largest town, has a vibrant atmosphere. It’s a great place to shop for everything from high street fashions to quality handcrafted goods and designer clothes - alternatively, you can relax and enjoy a coffee in one of Letterkenny’s many continental-style cafes. Seaside resorts like Bundoran provide a change of mood - if you’re looking for lively nights filled with music, song and dance, then Bundoran is the place to go.

The golf courses in Ulster contain an impressive mix of quality Parkland, Heathland and Links courses, and in Royal Portrush and Royal County Down, two world renowned golf courses along with Ballyliffin and Rosapenna in Donegal, all of which offer a spectacular links challenge to keep golfers from both sides of the Atlantic returning to these shores again and again.

COSTA DEL SOL

Sunset Beach Club Hotel The Perfect Choice for Your Next Golf Holiday If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a keen golfer enjoying a well-earned break on the Costa del Sol. You’ll undoubtedly be aware of the wide choice of accommodation available in this beautiful part of Spain; however, it’s not easy to find a hotel that covers all your needs.

The hotel’s Panorama bar is a favourite with golfers. Located on the 6th floor of the hotel and boasting spectacular sea views, it offers a daily happy hour and live sports on large flat screen TV’s; you really don’t need to leave the hotel. Groups and societies are also welcome with the hotel offering a wide range of catering options including welcome drinks parties, gala dinners and the use of the private function room for prize giving ceremonies.

You will certainly want somewhere that’s easily accessible to golf courses, near bars, restaurants, and local night life - and that offers comfortable, value-for-money accommodation. With these basic requirements, you will find quite a long list of options, but Golf Guide are delighted to highlight one of our favourite Costa del Sol hotels – Sunset Beach Club - that really stands out from the crowd, in terms of services provided, facilities on offer and value for money in the golf season. This emblematic 4 star hotel enjoys a fantastic seafront location and boasts extensive services and facilities to cover your every need. Málaga airport is just a short 20 minute drive and you can get to many of the Coast’s most popular golf courses such as Torrequebrada, Mijas Golf, Santana, Parador, and La Cala Golf Resort in under half an hour.

As well as a convenient location, Sunset Beach Club has an outdoor pool and sunbathing area open all year round, an on-site supermarket open every day, daily Happy Hour in the Panorama Bar, pool tables, gym (fee applies), and plenty of other details to make your stay enjoyable and as hassle-free as possible – 24 hour reception & security, printer and computer for on-line check-in, luggage weighing scales, and English-speaking staff, to name just a few. From the moment you decide to plan your golf holiday, a quick call or email to the hotel’s dedicated golf desk detailing your requirements is all you need. Their friendly staff will take care of your accommodation, golf tee time bookings at discounted rates, car hire, transfers from the airport and to the golf courses and even golf club hire, if you don’t fancy lugging your bag through the airport.

Sunset Beach Club offers apartment-style accommodation which makes it perfect for two golfers sharing. The standard 1 bedroom apartments have a separate bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room and there is plenty of space to store golf bags in the large wardrobes. For a small added fee you can upgrade to one of their Prime Sea View or Deluxe Junior Suite apartments which have guaranteed sea views, large 42 inch TV’s and other little extras you won’t find in the standard apartments. If you hire a car, the hotel offers covered and outdoor parking facilities and if you stay between November and January you can take advantage of special offers with discounts of up to 50% for garage parking. The apartments-style rooms all have their own fully equipped kitchenette so that you can prepare your own food (or at least keep your drinks cold or make a cup of tea!); however,

COSTA DEL SOL

the Oasis Restaurant on the first floor tends to be the favoured option amongst golfers. Every morning they serve an amazing full buffet breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausages, beans, black pudding, hash browns, fruit… the works! If you’ve got an early tee-time and can’t make it to breakfast, the restaurant can prepare a breakfast picnic for you to take away. If you feel like wandering out for a drink, meal or night on the town, there are bars and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Benalmádena’s popular night spots of 24 hour square and the Marina are about a 5-minute taxi ride and Fuengirola is about 1015 minutes away. Sunset Beach Club is open all year round and whilst prices are very reasonable throughout the year, golfers will get the best-value packages by visiting in December or January. For a tailor-made quote for your next golf holiday, simply contact Annemie or Susana by email golf@sunsetbeachclub.com , phone (34 952 579400 Ext. 7822), or by completing the online form in the Golf section of the hotel website. If you’re interested in the accommodation only, or would like to find out more about the hotel’s facilities in general, you will find all the information you need, and can book directly online at www.sunsetbeachclub.com.

COSTA DEL SOL

Parador de Málaga Golf By far the oldest course on the Coast and inaugurated by the Spanish Royal Family in 1925. Now consisting of 27 holes, the original 18 holes were designed by To`m Simpson, of Muirhead and Turnberry fame. An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and parkland, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read

greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The ninth is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new management and in recent years the greens and conditions of the course has been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a five minute drive from the 18th hole (or 19th hut) to Malaga Airport.

Alhaurin Golf Resort

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol. Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping

green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella. The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.

Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dog-leg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.
